Hopefully you are using a shortcut similar to this > “C:\Program Files (x86)\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe” -repair. You should see an archive of files checked at the launcher/login screen that counts down to zero.

Click the Options icon at the character selection screen and turn down all graphic settings to the bare minimum. Client default graphics settings were changed to max graphics settings since this last patch for most players. This should hopefully get you back into the actual game. Then adjust your graphic settings up from the minimum while paying attention to cpu temps and fps.

Lowering latency

The Warder.6352

Sorry for the long answer. If you mean you are monitoring the latency while you are actually playing the game, the 250 ms is normal latency based on the TCP stack used in the game for someone playing in NA on a NA world. I don’t have an EU copy of the game; but, I would suspect for an EU player playing on an EU world the 250 ms latency is normal. The 250 ms is the round trip time of packets transmitted to/from GW2 client to the world server and then from/back to to your GW2 client, which is transmission delay but also includes propagation delay of the signal. Some of the packets will travel roundtrip under the 200 ms and some above. You will see it fluctuate, sometimes excessively. You won’t be able to lower your latency in the game below 200 ms with the way Anet implemented the TCP stack server side. The reason is when a retransmission occurs, (they happen a lot) due to out of order segments from congestion/packet loss between your game client and the Anet servers, the communication between them timeouts for 200 ms by default. This timeout is on purpose and by design based on standard TCP congestion control mechanisms. You might get disconnected (error 7) from the server though if the communication link is not re-established quickly enough immediately after that 200 ms timeout. Trying to play across continents just adds to the latency because of longer propagation delays and greater roundtrip times. That’s why I would recommend players stick to playing on the continent closest to them.

Cross our fingers that some day Anet will purchase more peer bandwidth from the carriers serving their CDN and re-write the game’s network stack or use a customized one better suited for gaming that offers a more pleasurable playing experience for everyone, especially those trying to play from far away from NA or the EU.

Maybe try using the games built in frame limiter instead of VSync. In my opinion, you will have smoother gameplay using the Frame limiter set to 60. Turn off VSync when using the frame limiter. Your frames should be running at 59 fps with VSync off and the Frame limiter set to 60. Set your Resolution to Windowed Fullscreen. The tearing should be eliminated. Give it a shot . . .

I think you might be referring to UPnP. I don’t recommend using it. Universal Plug-n-Play is problematic from a security standpoint. You can use either port forwarding or triggering. Just use the method that you understand how to use.

Port 80/443 are needed for game patch updates and BLTP purchasing. Yes, normally they are open by default on a typical consumer router. The point is they still need to be open.

Disabling or turning off ICMP nerfs network stack capabilities that really aren’t worth losing the functionality they offer. It’s not necessary to disable ICMP for security reasons. Please don’t turn it off. If your ISP is is using IPv6 by now, you need to leave ICMP enabled, otherwise you break IPv6.

disconnect problem 7:11:3:191:101

The Warder.6352

The issue may be local after all. The last few days i have been running a monitoring server on my PC so i can keep an eye on internal temperatures on my tablet. Thing is that the tablet throws a lost contact error within seconds of GW2 giving me this very error, and kicking me back to the character selection screen. This could indicate that GW2 is capable of saturating the packet buffer of my PC somehow, forcing a timeout, flush, and connection reset.

Buffers are supposed to fill up. Saturation isn’t the problem. The problem is when buffers become too large causing latency at the local NIC or kernel increasing the likelihood of TCP retransmissions. If you have a properly working internet connection, then usually the case for a error 7 followed by the error 58 most GW2 players experience as skill lag in this game is due to TCP retransmission time outs. Since I don’t know your setup details, you may want to check your router and/or nic settings and lower the buffers or even disable all NIC offload and buffering settings and let the operating system handle the network stack settings if you are experiencing beyond the norm disconnects, delays or NIC resets.

Forward inbound/outbound TCP ports 80, 443, 6112 and port 6600. Make sure ICMP is on or the router is set to be pingable. Read below for more recommendations.

My recommendation is to first make sure you are running a software firewall/malware program like Windows Defender if you are using Win 8 or Security Essentials if you are using Win Vista/7. If you are still on Win XP, might be time to think about upgrading. If you use OS X, then follow the Mac OS X Security Configuration Guide.
My second recommendation is to buy a router capable of running the latest firmwares available from the open source communities. If you have a higher budget, then buy a Check Point, Juniper Networks, or Cisco router designed for remote office/branch settings.

New and Improved internet. Lag spikes?

The Warder.6352

Hi all. This is my first time posting in forum because I am desperately looking for answers.
I have currently installed a new and better internet connection but I ended up having lag spikes ONLY during gaming. Everything else within the internet’s reach is fine.

I previously used iCable 100mbps connection and everything was smooth. The only problem was i get disconnected every 15-30 mins which is really annoying cuz I have to run, for example during Lupicus for Arah, all the way from starting point.
Anyway, I ran SpeedTest and had the following results:
Ping: 30ms
DL speed: 16mbps
UL speed: 17mbps

Now, I am using Netvigator 200mbps connection and I’m very happy I don’t get disconnected. Problem is, I have lag spikes which makes it impossible to dodge, for example Lupicus spells.
However, I have the following SpeedTest results:
Ping: 12ms
DL speed: 27mbps
UP speed: 50mbps

I have the same settings on my computer before and after. I didn’t download anything new or uninstalled anything when I got the new connection. The only difference is the new improved internet but lag spikes not only for GW2, but also LoL, StarCraft, Diablo3, etc. Google Chrome runs every video much faster than before. Anyone knows a possibility? I have looked all over the internet searching for answers but no luck… Much appreciated if anyone has a solution.

PS: I’ve even tried “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe” /clientport 80 but didn’t make a difference =/

Hey there mrprince! I’ll try and help you out. Sounds like you got some fiber around you with a low ping and upload speeds like that. Can you post your Gw2.exe -diag log? This will give us a quick view of the details about your computer and connection to explore in more depth.

I cannot believe this, about 2 months ago everything was fine once i searched for my latency problem, which was adding /clientport 80 in the gw2.exe shortcut.

Now, i log in today after 1 or 2 days of been offline to see that anet fixed something to help out latency/lag issues. Once again, game is unplayable and delay is over 2 seconds on skills, npc and players ghosting. Come on, seriously?.

I was playing everyday with stable 95 to 110 ms, now it increases to 200 to 300 and so on and it wont drop down.

Is it gonna be like this always now? Please Tech support.

Nyq, you mentioned you were playing with stable 95 to 110 ms latency? Was this captured with resource monitor or a trace? I’m curious to know exactly what you mean.

This behavior as noted by others above with the LOS issues in the game currently is also easily noticed when you use the Toy Soldier tonic. For ranged attacks, the LOS in the game is awful.

Disabling Filter Anonymous Internet Requests

The Warder.6352

Hi guys, For a while I have had no issues, smooth frame rate and no delays. Although a while a go at least 3 months, I would have very bad delays about 3-5 seconds before a skill would go off, it was celarly not a frame rate issue and this was after using /clientport 80 (which is better than the launcher without it). It was a pain! But one day it just suddenly stopped on its own and it was great =D . . .

I recommend unchecking or disabling “Filter Anonymous Internet Requests” since this feature is designed to block ICMP packets and a source of overhyped security concerns for a consumer desktop. Also uncheck or disable SPI (stateful packet inspection) if you decide to keep using an external router when gaming especially while playing GW2 since the stateful inspection may actually deform the games network packet headers like removing data from the header. The problem with many of the consumer routers out on the market is they have buggy or even outdated firmware on them that doesn’t work well with the latest IETF recommendations and the updates Microsoft has included to the client network stack in Vista/Win7/Win8. Unless you are willing to spend a lot more money on a higher quality router like Juniper Networks or Checkpoint or Cisco; or, you are willing to update your router firmware with one of the open source solutions available, then beware of what router you use and that it actually may be hindering your gaming experience.

Connecting to NA IPs (EU)?!

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: The Warder.6352

The Warder.6352

Connecting to an IP address in NA from EU would most likely increase latency, depending on the route of the packets. Whether it would cause “horrible lag” while gaming? That depends on multiple variables from the physical to the network and to the application layers. Packet loss, received packet arrival variations, retransmission timeouts and sending server application delays are usually what a user would notice while gaming and perceive as “horrible lag”.

The EU servers do reside in Germany. When you traced the IP, you were most likely using a tool that only was looking up where the IP was registered from. Use trace route to identify the actual location of the server your GW2 client reports back to you in the chat window. The world you play on will determine what data center server farm you connect to. The 64.25.xxx.xxx IPs are the NA servers in Texas. The 206.127.xxx.xxx IPs are the EU servers in Germany.

I use the resource monitor tool also on a regular basis. The local to remote high latencies revealed in both your resource monitor screenshots actually has been around for quite some time, even since Guild Wars 1. I recall somewhere around when GW1: EoTN came out that my latency went up in GW1, above the 240 ms range. It should be well below that, around 80-100+ ms at most for me as traces to TX from my network to theirs show. GW2 & GW1 are still very playable under the high latency conditions. However, this is not the best situation especially for a game centered around pvp. I can only guess that Anet or parent company may have switched to a different CDN infrastructure, server architecture or changed the network stack around the time of EoTN. Anyways, it did change higher quite awhile ago from what I recall. Thorough packet analysis could reveal where the actual latency is coming from, the application layer or more near the network stack layer. If the network stack is the culprit, latencies this high are likely due to delayed acknowledgements combined with nagling. They don’t mix well in scenarios with high traffic loads with small payloads as in a typical gaming session. Turning off one or the other (del_acks or nagle) is usually the best solution under those circumstances. We as players will just have to bear with the high latencies for now.

If I understand you properly, when you are in game, type /ip in the chat window. It will tell you what server ip address you are playing on. You can simply do a trace route to the ip address echoed in game by opening a command prompt using the tracert command.
Your only choices in the game are to pick from an EU pool of servers or NA pool of servers depending on what homeworld you decide to play on. Use the NCSoft Game Advisor or add the -diag command line modifier to the Gw2.exe shortcut. This will show you network traces to each server pool in the EU and NA.

Thanks, for treating me like a moron. While I appreciate your detailed explaination, you seem to be skipping over some key facts here.

1. Even with my GPU taking up memory, I still exceed the minimum recommended RAM.

2. I’m well aware that I can use my license for both versions. The problem is that you can’t download the 64-bit version on a 32-bit OS. I don’t know where you think I’ll magically be able to get a 64-bit version to download a 64-bit version.

See the catch 22 here?

3. I understand all this. The problem is that ANet has not been clear about this. I have comfortably played many other games with this setup, yet GW2 is the only one with issues. I don’t care if my PC doesn’t meet the minimum requirements and I must upgrade, but according to ANet, it does.

This isn’t about, “manning up” as you put it. It’s about being frustrated at ANet’s lack of information, which may end up wasting me a lot of money.

Grab my hand
Now make an Outlook account; or, if you already have one, use it for the next step.
Go and download Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation 64-bit using the Outlook account.
Create a bootable Windows 8 DVD or USB install media from the prior download.
Install Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation (x64). Don’t activate this evaluation copy of Windows 8 with your product key. Use your product key in a later step.
Boot up Windows 8 Enterprise Eval (x64) and browse to Upgrade to Windows 8 with only a product key; or, as an alternative download the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant and run it in the Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation to use it to upgrade to Windows 8 (x64).
If you choose to Upgrade to Windows 8 with only a product key method, you will be able to download the Windows 8 64-bit setup install file since you are running a copy of Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation (x64) using the prior install.
Using either method above, create a Windows 8 (x64) bootable DVD or USB installation media.
Boot from the newly created Windows 8 (x64) media and install Windows 8 (x64) and activate it with your previously purchased product key.
Now let go of my hand! =) happy gaming

When Minimum Requirements Are Not...

There’s a prominent note on the minimum requirements page that says:

“Note: Due to potential changes, system requirements may change over time and you may be required to upgrade your current system (or obtain a new system) to continue to play the game.”

Most of us, if we’ve been gamers for years, have had to upgrade our systems to keep up with game updates. Seems like we had to do that for DAoC even when they changed the character models.

As someone who has been gaming since the days when computers came in one color (green), I understand that upgrading is a necessary requirement.

Had the minimum requirements stated that 32-bit OS’s aren’t compatible with GPU’s over 256MB, I would have considered my options for a 64-bit version.

However, because this wasn’t stated anywhere, I assumed it wouldn’t be an issue (I mean how many people run 32-bit versions of Windows? Thousands…millions?)

I received an email back from support and this is what they’ve said.

“First, the minimum requirements for the game are correct. The operating system issue you are experiencing is independent of the game or it’s requirements. It’s a Windows issue which we have no direct control over. So while Windows 32-bit is supported, if you have enough RAM and a powerful enough video card you will experience these issues regardless of what we do with the game code. Again, it’s a “flaw” in the Operating System not the game code which is why Microsoft has documented it in those previously provided links"

So, ArenaNet is washing their hands of all responsibility here basically. Which of course leaves me holding the bill.

Do not hold Anet responsible for your ignorance regarding memory limitations of 32 bit clients and graphics card device memory. The flaw isn’t actually a flaw. It’s just a fact that 32 bit hardware and operating systems can only address a certain amount of memory. Since 4GB is the licensed (addressable memory) limit for 32-bit client SKUs, which includes all device memory (including that 256 MB video card memory), the larger the video card memory installed on a 32 bit OS, the less system memory will be available because the OS will reserve huge holes of memory mapped space for all devices in the system. Guild Wars 2 would choke on too little system memory available which could happen on a 32 bit OS. Lesson learned . . . don’t build gaming systems with 32 bit clients.

Please also be aware that Windows 8 product keys work with either 32 bit or 64 bit versions. Your product key (Windows 8 32 bit license) you say you purchased will work with a 64 bit Windows 8 installation. You can download a Windows 8 installation directly from Microsoft. Just make sure you download the installation setup file while using a 64 bit OS to receive the 64 bit installation. Use this Upgrade to Windows 8 with only a product key to man up and game on. Cheers, mate!

I truly believe the mouse camera & targeting is working as Anet intended. Would you all that are experiencing any problems with the mouse/targeting please post your mouse make and driver. I am unable to replicate the problem as posted by Faux Play. Anet intended the left mouse button to select a target as one action but not attack (as if to setup in advance) a new target to go with a new skill attack chain. You must click a skill key to change the avatar focus and to attack the new, selected (the one selected with left mouse button) target. The right mouse button selects AND changes the avatar focus so the next skill used in the attack chain will attack the new, selected (the one selected with the right mouse button) target. This makes it easier (in my opinion, I know others will disagree) to change your attack chains on targets on the fly. I believe this is what Anet intended. What Faux Play posted seems to be a glitch and obviously not intended by Anet but more likely due to a mouse driver issue with the game.

Hi RaviSJr.,
Players have had great success with the AMD FX-8350. Go ahead and purchase it. I don’t believe you would be wasting your money. Many others have posted threads regarding this processor and it works fine with Guild Wars 2. Other folks have mentioned that the game will use multiple threads but only 3 threads are heavily used.
If you decide to buy it though, be aware if you are using Windows 7 you will need to install two AMD hotfixes to get the most out of the cpu, especially for gaming. Otherwise, you may mysteriously wonder why your fps is extremely low while playing not just in WvW. Don’t forget to install them or you will sound like one of the those that post here blaming Anet that there is something wrong with the game because there fps is too low. GG.

Hello Kyllaa,
These traces actually look normal. Nothing really out of the ordinary except some slightly high rtts on the last couple hops. I would recommend instead of trying to run traces when you experience lag, try using a tool like Resource Monitor (Windows) or Activity Monitor (OS X) while you play the game. You can see real time data like latency, packet loss, ports, ip addresses & send/receive B/sec. It’s very useful and can be logged for analysis later. It would be helpful if you could post results especially like a log or screenshots of the Gw2.exe Latency shown by the monitor. My Gw2.exe latency fluctuates from 60+ (ms) to over 290 (ms) second by second while playing the game. This can be one indication of congestion at the load balancers that handle the server access traffic. Give it a shot and see if you have any latency fluctuations while monitoring. The game is is still very playable with the wide fluctuations. Yet for the players that have poor, asymetric connections at their local loops, and limited upload bandwidths or poor peer routing, or are far away from the home servers they play on, it can be a very frustrating experience with the network stack employed in the game.

If your game closed suddenly, there may be more going on than just screen tearing. You should be able to easily solve screen tearing by either using the tried and true Vsync method or use what I prefer, the Frame Limiter method. You may want to check your DirectX installation using either the GW2 client -diag modifier or just running the diagnostics from the command prompt with the command “dxdiag” to find problems. AMD drivers have many bugs currently. Are you running a CrossFireX setup? AMD is trying to resolve mico stuttering in CrossFireX setups. If you are using CrossFireX, you may want to try and stablize your GW2 client video display using a single GPU setup first, then go back and try CrossFireX.

I don’t understand why you say in your post “it seems that with the HD 7970, you could only get a maximum FPS of 30-50 FPS, and can still dip to 20 FPS.” That card is more than enough to play the game at higher frame rates. The components you listed will run this game just fine. I would recommend change the shadow and reflection settings to (None) even with the good choice of hardware you picked out. You state “FPS drops to 40 even with vsync turned off.” Then you state “graphics options on high reflections to terrain and sky only FXAA 60 fps limit vsync all the lovely textures and everything.” I can only assume from the last statement that you are using the frame limiter currently with vsync ON. If so, I would strongly recommend to turn OFF or uncheck Vertical Sync and set or leave ON Frame Limit: 60. Set the game display resolution to Windowed Fullscreen. Also try it with Shadows & Reflections both set to None. Try these settings to see if all stuttering disappears.

The Warder.6352

Ququbird try changing a few settings. Since Anet included a frame limiter as you mentioned, you should turn OFF Vertical Sync. Make sure you have it turned off in your video card driver settings globally or, if you rather prefer, specifically for GW2 and uncheck Vertical Sync under the Graphics Options in the game. Make sure the Frame Limiter setting is set to 60. Change the Resolution also under the Graphics Options to Windowed Fullscreen. I found the windowed fullscreen mode has no tearing but fullscreen did. This should now set you on a buttery, smooth 59 FPS (obviously 1 frame below max 60). 59 fps is the goal, not 60 fps. If your cpu is overclocked (4 GHz+) and you have a fairly decent dedicated video card, you should be able to maintain 59 fps in most areas of the game, except the really large battles (like WvW zergs) with lots of spells and stuff going off.

You may also just do a trace using what the -diag modifier script does by using a command prompt to run this --—→ “pathping -w 500 -q 25 -4 64.25.39.1” (copy/paste everything in quotes in your command prompt). That will give you a rough idea how the connection is to the US server farm. Unfortunately, the primary factor in latency can be distance. Most likely you are better off playing on the servers closest to where you play from (in EU). However, it’s worth a shot to just try it and see. While checking, you will likely get to test out the transatlantic cable TAT-14 =) It can handle 1 Mbps just fine =)

I purchased a Total Makeover Kit after Anet announced the glow was fixed. However, my Sylvari did not get her glow back. It is still bugged, at least for me in PvE. However, in PvP the glow is working. Not sure why it works in one area and not the other.

Targeting System Broken

The issue you are experiencing is frustrating. It most likely is due to the mouse right-clicking as you describe. For some reason, Anet allowed the right mouse button to be used as a targeting method, which is different from Guild Wars 1. I can only suggest to try and use the right mouse button as your targeting mechanism. I retrained myself to do just that. It is difficult to use the mouse like this since the right mouse button also is how you have to turn the character point of view. After awhile you will get used to it. Hopefully, the right click targeting feature will be toggable in a future update so those of us that want to turn it off can do so.

is it worth getting a 120hz Monitor?

If you like playing at a 1920×1080 resolution, you will get a slightly smoother visual experience at 120Hz and be able to play in 3D if that’s your cup of tea. I have never seen any monitor beyond that resolution that is capable of 120Hz. Your budget allows for $300, which will get you a nice 120Hz monitor like an Asus, BenQ, or Dell. I don’t believe you can get a full surround setup like Eyefinity or 3D vision for that price range, though.

Those who are experiencing delays and and poor playing experience while playing from a location physically located far, far away from the home server they chose may want to try the home servers closer to the country they actually play from. TCP acks, UDP drops, the refractive index of fiber, the speed of light, your ISP, physical layer issues, the game’s not so custom but works pretty good IP stack, Amazon’s cloud hiccups, bandwidth oversubscription, DDOS attacks, duplex mismatches, all add up to you know . . . LAG. The Internet’s inherent latency exposes all of the above.

You may use the Google Authenticator on multiple devices. The key is to scan the same QR code presented with each device that you want to use with the authenticator. Go to Unlink Mobile Authentication or use the Account Recovery page. Follow the steps using either method. Then go back to Account Management Security and perform the authentication steps. Make sure when the QR code appears to scan it with each device you would like to use for authentication purposes.

For those trying to unlink authenticators, they should go to Account Recovery. Click “Disable Linked Authentication”. Follow the steps it presents you. Beware you will need your original retail box serial number or digital copy serial number. If you receive an error message after performing the de-link procedure, ignore it then go back to Account Management Security and perform the mobile authenticator linking steps again.

Just go here Trollhammer: Account Recovery. You will need your original serial number from the retail box or from the email sent to you if you bought the digital version. Ignore the error message after you complete the de-link procedure. Then you can go back and perform the original steps to link an authenticator again.

EU Players with Lag

The clues are starting to add up that Inteliquent’s backbone is likely a culprit in the EU lag based on the logs/traces people are posting.

ip4.tinet.net <<< this network seems to be very lossy at the moment for the unfortunate GW2 gamers that get routed over this backbone.

EDIT: I called their NOC to confirm if any issues in Europe. They said they were not aware of any issues at this time. Hopefully, network support from Anet & Inteliquent can get this resolved in a timely manner.
