So with the recent patch, the all-stat ascended rings got a nice little buff of 10-20% to their stats. They now offer +60 to 6 stats and a bonus 1% more crit damage. Compared to the average item, this is 28 MORE stat points than the average ascended item, plus MF and Crit % on top of the stats which are less quantifiable but still additional benefits.
On the other hand, many people like to min/max their specific trait lines. They like to fall into and perfect the categories of berserker, tank, condition-focused, etc. Gear focused on that specific playstyle certainly boosts the potential of that playstyle.
So, I’ll leave it to you. What do you think? More stats overall, or fewer, more focused stat points? What do you want on YOUR ascended, and why?
So I’m at 80…I’ve been here for a little while now, and I’ve decided I really enjoy fractals and dungeons more than other content. Its a struggle to bring myself to level other characters, because I’m so used to my elementalist. So I have a few questions for you guys, to make the most of my character.
1. What do people look for in an ele dungeon build? I’ve tried glass cannon and I’ve tried regen/bunker build. I’m really curious as to what stats and traits I should be aiming for to keep my teammates happy.
2. How viable are eles for high-tier fractals? Am I wasting my time and should I roll a guardian or warrior for fractal fun after 30 or so, or can my ele stand her ground?
3. Staff seems to be the weapon of choice for dungeons due to their AOE nature. Could dagger/dagger be considered effective for dungeons even though there’s a lack of range? Seems like suicide to me.
4. I can’t really decide on a trait lineup, so Im thinking for ascended gear, I want the all-stat gear. Is this recommended or should I avoid it?
Any yips for getting to this event? All the overflows seem booked and I can’t seem to get in them…
Thera Zaros your logic is flaws >.> Then by your logic the person who wants to keep main focus shouldn’t socket toughness or vit and die quicker so you can get main focus. Or maybe, you want to get 1 shotted by some aoes.
My point being, that benefits ME to stay alive longer. Once you meet the basic threshold where you’re no longer one-shot by an attack (which in some cases is your base values, and in other cases can be unobtainable for your build depending on the boss), any extra toughness is farily useless to the group.
Highly beneficial to the individual player, because staying alive longer is awesome….But useless to the group. One could argue increased DPS due to staying alive longer, but by socketing toughness, they’ve reduced their DPS to begin with, from their “potential dps.”
Sleep time for me, night
Per your request: Magic find equipment = More drops = More money = Better ability to upgrade to “combat gear” with good, useful stats. It’s true MF is a selfish stat, but remember that not everyone can afford good gear right off the bat. I believe it to be quite useful in the long run in that way.
My final points before I go sleep:
The way I see it, the problem doesn’t lie with “selfish” players, but with the fact that other people feeling like every stat needs to benefit the entire party. I personally think this is false logic; my gear, my money, my choice of how it benefits me. If those benefits roll over onto the group, awesome. If they don’t, oh well; you didn’t pay for my gear, I did.
And my points aren’t without merit. Level 35’s and Toughness and Vitality are JUST as useless in dungeons as magic-find gear is. You can’t tell ArenaNet they should change one feature when 3 others do the exact same thing. But you could ask them to remove all 4 features. That would be very fair and reasonable and I wouldn’t have any problem supporting it. I like well-formed arguments that take all the factors into account
If using MF gear in place of “combat” gear is so detrimental, why shouldn’t we scale dungeons to 80? Level 35’s shouldn’t be allowed to run AC.
Is this not the point you’re making? Players that bring down the efficiency of the group shouldn’t get to play with the group?
Or was the focus on the fact that a player in MF gear is selfish? Because that selfish person is still more efficient to use than a level 35…..
Also, isn’t Toughness and Vitality a selfish trait? Keeping yourself alive doesn’t lead to quicker kills or benefit your party in any way…

Runes of the pirate were some of the cheapest runes to put in my exotics when I hit 80. The rare MF jewlery wasn’t too expensive either. Not all of us can afford high-stat gear and runes right off the bat. I’ll upgrade to Runes of Divinity and some exotic jewelry like Triforge when I can….But that may take some time, so I don’t see why I should be looked down on for my gear choice.
I really don’t see MF gear as being much of a penalty as it is. I’ve never had a problem with a team of 5 members clearing a dungeon, often with minimal deaths. That’s where knowing your class and having the skills to use it come into play. If I do 20% less damage than you but have the skills and knowledge to survive 30% longer than you, then regardless of my gear I’m still helping the team more than you are in your “good” gear.
Lastly, I’ll add that it’s not a requirement to have a full set of exotics with exotic runes and sigils to be able to run dungeons effectively. It certainly helps, but why does everyone feel it’s obligatory?
I bought 2 stacks of each gathering material. Stacks of 250 are a great inventory saver, and definately worth the ~30s I paid per stack, compared to needing 3 stacks of normal variations.
Should help my legendary grinding later on
A third account is essentially a third player, in the eyes of ANet.
Find a trusted middleman for the trade, or one of you has to go first. There really isn’t another option.
Dungeon grinding is a very efficient way to level up, but you need to be at least 30 (35 prefered) to start doing that. You can get a full exp bar in 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the dungeon and path you choose, and work on your level 80 exotics while you do it!
However, this is beneficial more at higher levels where grinding out levels takes a little longer. Truthfully, just exploring the maps 100% (You said you’re playing for fun, so go enjoy the environments that the graphics team put so much work into!) gives a ton of exp. It’s also a requirement for some end-game content, and unlocks tons of waypoints for easier travel later.
Crafting is the de-facto fastest way to level up. However, it requires a solid cash investment you wont be able to contribute yet. You’ll find this method more useful for a second or third character.
Takes about as long as any other set. A week or so of 2-3 paths a day, which is 2-3 hours a day. It requires being level 75 for the Explorable mode, I believe.
I will tell you that CoF is very overused though….Some of the other sets are very pretty, although lacking particle effects. Find something that matches your style
Has anyone obtained all the attachments yet?
Is there any reward or title for completing all of the non-repeatable achievements in the game? Has anyone done it? Or is this just a long term “job well done” personal accomplishment?
Can someone tell me what makes a legendary, legendary? As opposed to being an exotic?
The skins aren’t always spectacular, the particle effects are outright lacking on some of them, and the requirements are similar in nature (and in fact, actually more-limited to crafting-only) to other Exotics.
They seem to me like exotics that are just harder to obtain than other exotics, with no other difference. So why aren’t they exotics?
I’d like to hope so; Word is though that the increased time frame for the halloween reward was due to the hurricane locking people out of the game (due to widespread power outages).
Arena Net hasn’t said anything either way about one-time rewards, and I’ve learned a long time ago that making assumptions about a game company’s views and policies is a very bad idea.
While it’s true we have had no one-time rewards, we have only had one one-time event so far. We will have more in the middle of the month, and certainly more in the future.
So with the trend of one-time events in this game, Im starting to worry. Many of these events are available at times when some of us must attend school or work, or simply arent able to access the content due to time zones (who wants to wake up at 4 AM on a saturday?)
I am content with having “kickoff” events that I will inevitably miss; I can always read up or watch the cutscene later, even if I cannot attend in person. However, I would like to encourage ArenaNet to keep this to kickoff EVENTS, not kickoff REWARDS. The reason is thus: By including kickoff events, you encourage community building and participation. Including rewards, while fun for those who can attend, really hurts those who cannot. The last thing we want is to feel excluded and locked out of "that really cool new dagger skin) because we had to choose between gaming and attending a class for our degree, or using up a sick day at work, or something equally detrimental.
It’s understandable that we cannot please all of the people all the time, but what are your thoughts as a comunity? Should we focus on one-time event rewards? Or should we work to stray away from these, and only offer concrete rewards for repeatable events? What should be the dividing factor? 24h+ events get items? 7-day+ events get items? Or no temporary events get items? Let myself and ArenaNet here your thoughts!
TL;DR;PersonalOpinion: Keep one-time Events; Do not give out limited-edition rewards for these events
Ive had a recent problem. While exploring dungeons, often we party with random people in the world. If you leave the party, you are removed from the dungeon, and your records of party chat disappear; this makes it very difficult to contact or rejoin your party if you’ve been disconnected for too long, leave the party by mistake, or any other of a mirad of reasons.
I would like to request that party chat be persistent, much like Guild chat is, even after leaving a party. This allows us a record of some of the members of our previous party so as to contact them as needed even after the party is over. As it stands, party chat seems to vanish due to the map change caused when leaving dungeons.
Thanks for the consideration of this issue.
Tried 4 or 5 times, then said “nope, I’m’a farm some more candy corns.” Been happy since.
When I made this map I was HOPING that people who aren’t into jumping would do exactly this. They’d see a fun Halloween looking environment, maybe get to the first chest and snag a goodie, then be on their merry way. I see now it was a mistake to make the hardest jumping challenge in the game part of an in-your-face update like a holiday event. I’m not going to stop making difficult stuff like this, they just won’t be so prominent in the future. I honestly hate making people upset and have a very high level of empathy. So it’s been hard hearing all the people that are so angry, frustrated and sad because of something I’ve made. But it’s just another lesson learned.
Dont stop! Challenges are great! A big part of my personal concern was that it was limited-time, and that i felt “required” to rush through this content to see everything the first holiday event had to offer. Add this kind of content as hidden world events; It will provide a challenge for completionists without the time constraints of a holiday
Holidays are for fun and casual enjoyment. That’s not to say difficult challenges dont have their place in this game; they certainly do
Define “few”.
I’ve been waiting for 45 now on Sanctum of Rail….:( I missed the initial event because I was in the dungeon at the time.
I have personally recieved the Mad Moon Shield and the Death Shoulders (medium). So both craftable and BLC skins are available, in theory.
No pictures though
Lol, that’s awesome. Thanks to both of you for the info as well
Has anyone discovered a point to this game? I love trying to get all the emotes (although quite often, the emote choices wont show up…), but is there any reason to participate? Increased drops, weaker king, or anything similar?
Utilize overflow servers or multiple accounts. There’s around 20 pumpkins in Lion’s arch, so just doing 40 a day will get you the achievement in 4 days.
For some reason the game wants to download a 14,000 file patch. Im sitting on 1% right now with no hope of getting in-game in 7 minutes. My game was working fine when i was logged in 2 hours ago….is there any way to skip this patch? Whose idea was this….?
Oh Theta honey. You have no idea about the word “completionist” do you. Or what drives us to do it.
You can’t just ‘skip’ it. It absolutely must be done. No matter how many glass desks we shatter or laptops thrown against walls or keyboards smashed on floors in our mad rage.
^This
I do understand that, and perhaps the term “completionist” was incorrectly used…but I did want to share the knowlege that there won’t be any permanent deteriments to your account (such as an ugly empty achievement bar that will never be filled, or an empty slot that can never be filled) by not finishing this puzzle. That won’t apeal to everyone; If you want to finish the puzzle for the sake of finishing it, do it! I want to see you succeed! But if you’re like me and feel it’s not worth the frustration, understand that you’re not permanently locked out of anything by choosing not to participate. Perhaps the slippers, but you can emulate that with the craftable rune and some level 80 explorer’s gear with a reskin.
Lol, Im talking about game completionists here. They aren’t missing out by being unable to participate in this jumping puzzle.
Good news guys! The clock-tower does not count for the Mad King’s Emesary achievement/title! Also, since seasonal achievements are likely to disappear after the holiday, this means you can still get 100% completion of the game WITHOUT doing this jumping puzzle! Those missed achievement points? There’s no real max achievement points because of repeatable achievements like Dailies. So be happy, rejoice, and have a fantastic Halloween!
Props and respect to those who accomplish the Clocktower anyway.
Is it safe to destroy my Mad Memories book now that I have obtained Mad Memories: Complete, or will I be expected to hold onto it for future events or requirements?
Prolly going to keep it either way, but that’s the burning question of the night.
Lots of Char and Norn it seems…
Anyone know? How do I get the Gift recipies, at least?
Im not suprised. The recent Q/A session with the programmers was hosted on Reddit. Most game updates can be found on Facebook. Finding information in game or on the main site for pretty much anything seems to be more of a challange than getting to 80 with no deaths.
…for the weapons? Im not talking about making the weapons themselves, that’s way above my budget. But how can I unlock the recipes so I can do it in a few months?
Im not saying the items aren’t great; Hell, Im debating on buying black lion keys (or rushing to 80 and trying my luck at map completion) to go for that Greatsword. Im glad they put so much effort into so many items!
Im just suprised that the requirements for so many of these items benefit the players who have extrodinarilly large cash pools. I could see 1 or 2 items angled at maxed players, but more than half? And the lion chest items are completely unobtainable without luck (assuming you’re trying to obtain things on your own, through natural gameplay, rather than buying your way to success).
Having some “elite” rare items is cool, but my question to the developers is, why so many?
Im all for gold sinks, but there’s a severe problem with combining gold sinks with holiday events. This temporary nature does two things:
1. It results in an extreme demand down the line; look at party hats in Runescape, where they sell for upwards of $1000 in real cash these day, and far more in in-game currency. Some of them even trade for more cash than the game allows you to hold; that’s a problem, and it’s the exact same thing we’re facing with these skins, 10 years down the line, but even moreso because of the rate they will be leaving the game due to account bound status.
2. Much like the Mystic Chest goldsink, this is temporary. This will not fix the economy, and will do little more than provide a several day reprieve to the already massive influx of gold that the “elite” players have obtained. When the event goes, the goldsink goes, but the ill-gotten feelings of the players who didn’t exploit events or buy the game on day 1 and grind every day since, will not diminish.
Goldsinks are great. But keep them out of limited-time events, please!
Available to everyone:
Mad King Book
4 hour time limit weapons
Horns Town Hat
Food recipies
Available to low level crafters:
Sigil of the Night
Mad King’s Rune
Available via gem shop (real cash or large gold amounts)
Mad King’s Outfit

Mini Pack
Available to very high level crafters:
Arachniphibia Skin
Lantern Staff Skin
Lunar Shield Skin
Available by Black Lion Chest (Pure luck)
Greatsaw
Chainswords
event pistol
Sythe
Event Shoulders x3
So why are so many event items available only to the lucky or extremely rich, while only a handfull of items are available to the casual player? What shifted the ballance in this direction, rather than making the first event something where everyone could enjoy everything?
(edited by Theta Zero.9023)
Anyone want to point me in the right direction for this event? I’ve bought some recipies from the new karma vendors in Lion’s Arch, but Im a bit confused as to what else I should try to work on.
This game has been out for what, two months?
That is not enough time to expect the “majority of players” to be anywhere near max level. “Exclusive content” therefore should be targeted at those players around the average level, which I would anticipate to be around 30 or 40.
If you really want to bring Level Elitism into this.
…From forging a legendary, transmuting it onto a white-named item, and trading it to an alt after using it on a main?
Bumpage.
After speaking to someone in-game, he mentioned that creating a web app out of this might be more useful; Do you guys think I should scrap the Excel project in exchange for creating a web app (this will take longer)?
“I feel like I want to play a guardian but I want to be a human race.”
So do it. It’s a game, you should be enjoying yourself. If you know what you want, go for it.
You can make back the 10g or so you spent in a week of farming at 80. Don’t let that bother you.
Yes you can. The world first Moot crafter was a level 35 at the time.
LINK UPDATED!!!
Version 0.5 Patch Notes:
- Cover Sheet Added with total prices
- Incinerator and The Bifrost recopies added as separate sheets in the same file
- Spreadsheet Locking enabled. No password set on this version, but by default you can only edit the white collumn designed for input
- Formulas hidden from view
- Added an additional recipie section for skillpoints, karma, tokens, and WvW tokens
- Moved the totals to the right side for formatting
- Hid one collumn
Updating values are still not incorporated (prices on the sheet are not correct for Incinerator or Bifrost, and Sunrise is several days out of date). I ran into a small snag where the live update formula for Google Docs does not exist in Microsoft Excel, so I’m currently researching a workaround. I hope to include it in the next update.

Ugh, I hate forum moves….I wonder if I can get this posted in the Crafting Forum as a sticky when it’s 100% finished…since it’s a crafting specific utility…
EDIT: Awesome news! I figured out how to lock and hide spreadsheet data, which means the next posted version should have calls to live data Tonight’s goal: Work on setting up changes, and then create a second table. This one will be for Incinerator.
(edited by Theta Zero.9023)
I do have some plans, but what exactly do you think should be cleaned up on it? Im always open to suggestions
At 57 I have all of my skills unlocked except for one 30-point elite. Dont worry, skill points come and go, you’ll get them fast if you 100% areas.
Well, now Im at a loss. Forums state we can’t bump things, but I need feedback which means I need you guys to see this thread AND POST! >.>
So, one more bump for now, then I guess I’ll let this die if no one else posts, and feedback is done until the full beta version is released.
I wish we had a bump button >.>
I like that idea, Strill.
I’m going to add a section at the bottom for tokens, skill points, etc. They’ll factor in like the recipes do, only basically be a recipe of one item. Then I can add percentages to each item.
I’ve also requested access to GW2Guru’s API as well, so that may be easier and more efficient to use. We`ll see.
I haven’t heard any tell of this, but I would certainly expect it in a future patch (or more likely, full expansion).
Maybe it already exists and no one has stumbled across the recipes yet…;)
UPDATES
10/12/2012 -
- Some mod moved my post to Fan-Generated-Content, so I guess I’ll make this my new base of operations until I have a finalized version. That version will be fought tooth and nail to keep in the crafting section.
- Discovered that adding % complete tabs for overall completion wont work with current formulas, and modifying forumulas to enable this would cause other undesired side effects that make the spreadsheet harder to use; therefore this feature is scrapped for now.
10/11/2012 -
- Duplicate post made in the Crafting Forums due to lack of responses elsewhere.
10/10/2012 -
- New Download Host selected temporarily, until I can figure out how to enable downloads directly from Google Docs.
