HoM related bug: Guild Wars 2 removed all my HoM titles and achievements despite me being 50/50 in GW1 since long before GW2 launched. Tried logging into GW1, switch the HoM display from personal to account-wide multiple times, to no effect.
I even got the mail from LOR-748, but only after I created a new Sylvari thief character just a while ago but affects all characters in my account.
EDIT: Resolved by entering GW2’s HoM after logging to GW1’s HoM.
I had the same problem. I went the HoM webpage and entered one of my GW1 character’s name. Then logged back into GW2. All titles and achievement points were restored.
Server: Maguuma
Just logged into the game and received the same latter. I have 30pts in the HoM from GW1. Everything has been taken away. Even the achievement points in GW2 from HoM progress.

Adjust,
I would not level with staff in most cases. The damage is lackluster, especially if enemies are moving around, and the lack of mobility slows things down a great deal. I would definitely run dagger/dagger or dagger/focus. All that mobility will save you a crazy amount of time just walking around, and the damage against single enemies or small groups is much better.
Tyber,
Well, I guess you should stack condition damage. Look for Carrion gear mostly. In areas where you feel safe, run both air and fire signets to speed up your clears. In areas that are challenging, run things that don’t suck instead.
Consider grabbing a couple of conjures. Signet of Air, Signet of Fire, and Magnetic Shield or Flame Axe is a super inflexible build with very few ways to cope with surprises or escape from bad situations, but mobs are predictable enough that you can usually get away with it and you will do a lot of damage. If you don’t like conjures, go straight to unlocking cantrips, because they’re great.
You unlock your second spec slots at 41, and you’ll want to be either Earth/Arcane or Earth/Fire. If you can find the points to learn fire before then, then switch into it. I think solo fire is probably better for leveling than solo earth. I would not use solo arcane.
Thanks for the advice. I really don’t like this new system. I want the freedom to respec.
Server: Maguuma
Man I too could use some advice with leveling. I remembered from GW1 we recieved gifts per character on their B-day, so I created several characters when the game first launched. Played it up to round lvl 20. Came back to game after a long break and thought I would try playing it again. It’s very different from my main which was Guardian. Part of my problem is that all of my points were dumped into Earth and I have no spare points to work with.
Here is what I have unlocked:
Full Earth Trait line
Healing Utilities: Healing seed Glyph of Ele Harmony, Sig of Restor, Arcane Brillance
Utilities: Arcane Wave, Arcane Shield, Arcane Power, Arcane Blast, Glyph of Storms, Glyph of Lesser Ele, Sig of Fire, Sig of Air.
Any advice on gear stats, weapons, and utility combos is greatly appreciated.

As someone who’s played since beta, I wouldn’t expect a refund for my base game. If I remember right, that’d mean Anet would be paying me money to play Heart of Thorns. The refunds are only a feature being provided for the players that bought GW2 so they could play Heart of Thorns, amends being made for unintentional false advertisement. I would have liked to have an extra GW2 account, sure the extra daily rewards would be nice,, but by providing a character slot it’s basically the same as the GW1 Factions and Nightfall purchasing scheme.
Reparations have been made and now I’m just trying to figure out what to do with my 10th and 11th character slots I didn’t need.
Except it isn’t the same thing. Anet is saying we need to pre-purchase to get the extra character slot. If we don’t purchase HoT, we don’t get the slot. That isn’t the same as getting the extra slots when purchasing Factions and Nightfall. We got them regardless of pre-ordering.
The whole thing just stinks.
Server: Maguuma
I really wish we could mix and match pieces. I would like to us the Chest and maybe the shoulder pieces in Guardian. But we cant’ customize. So I don’t spend my money.
Server: Maguuma
If remember correctly we could save build templates in GW1. Maybe ANet went through a Dark Age and that technical know how was lost.
When the game first launched we had to find and pay an NPC to reset our traits. It was a stupid and tedious game mechanic that was thankfully changed. Given the new system we should be able to save and load templates.
Server: Maguuma
Whoa whoa whoa, wait a second. Your saying there is a real reason to buy that overpriced “feature heavy” expansion?
Server: Maguuma
I would like to use a hood skin for my Guardian. Light and medium classes can wear some heavy armor skins. Its only fair the heavy classes can do the same. For example the Thief’s starter hood would look great.
Server: Maguuma
I am not paying $50.00 for this. I will wait for the price to come down. If I buy it at all.

Nope. I will wait for the price to come down. Not worth it to me for the price.

Easy, none of them. I am not buying the overpriced expansion. So won’t have access to the new “feature heavy” stuff.

I agree. Big reason I won’t be buying the HoT "Expansion. Not worth the money.

So much about Anets busniess practices is killing my interest in this game. You the OP bring up a great point. This “Expansion” is tremendously overpriced.

All I read was:
“There’s a website, with opinions on it, that prevents me from playing the game.”
I see the forum trolls are as snide as ever. I used the website as an example/indicator of problem. For those of you that are bright enough see the issue I would like to hear your opinions.

I have only recently come back to the game after a very long break. Reading the Metabattle.com and other build reviews it seems GS, 1hSW, focus, and scepter were/are the best weapons with GS being top dog. Mace, shield, and torch seemed to fall by the wayside. Then the apparent joke that have been spirit weapons. Does this upcoming HoT update make other weapon combinations viable or even preferred?
I would consider coming back (maybe even buying the expansion) if this was true. If its just the same old GS spam then mehy may just pass.

Wow 122 views and not one response.
Server: Maguuma
It has been quit sometime since I last played. Back then Hammer or Great sword where pretty much the only real options. Does anyone have a functioning build utilizing the 1h sword/shield and spirit weapons for PvE and dungeons?
Thanks in advance.
Server: Maguuma
Thanks for adding to the problem. It’s these reasons why Anet will never get rid of stupid things like RNG chests. Because people keep buying them up.
Go ahead and buy more. Don’t expect anything though. Don’t you love when they lock new content behind RNG (or lottery if you want to call it that)?
Pretty much the reason why I have quit playing the game. Flame and Frosts Fused Weapons hidden behind the rng was the last straw me. Heck you could completely ignore the “free content” and just play the cash shop casino to obtain one ticket… maybe. What happened to the idea of completing quests to gain items?
I liked GW1 system of no cash shop rng, all event items could be realistically obtained during the event through gameplay. The current GW2 game is all about the cash shop. Just like any other mmo on the market.
Server: Maguuma
Anyone get the feeling that these free updates are just an excuse to slip items into the cash shop? I was hoping that at the end of the flame and frost (provided you completed the other achievements) we would get a fused weapon token for our efforts. What did we end up with? Some mehy looking gauntlets. I am guessinig this next update will be more items added to the cash shops rng that should have been attained as quest rewards.
What I wish would be in this update
-Different legendries that don’t look like weapons from a Princess Barbie mmo.
-The proposed scavenger hunt change to building a legendary.
-An in game group finder instead of needing to alt tab out of the game to use a third party website.
-The ability to save and load build templates similar to GW1. Eliminate the need to visit an npc, pay the fee, and then manually change your points.
Server: Maguuma
While I agree they could just put the ticked at a certain gem price and make it non gamble, i must remind you guys going “omgz A-net so greedy ppl!” that not having a fused weapon does not impair your gameplay in any way and it was stated straight away that there will be fancy stuff for gems since day one.
I would also like to know how long the tickets will stay in chests. Ty.
I think your missing the point. Anet as part of their marketing campaign said that all items could be earned in game. Yet we need to play in the cash shop/gambling house in order to get the fused weapons skins? Sure we can in theory grind out the coin to buy gems. But without knowing drop tables there is no way to know if we have a reasonable chance to get one. If Anet is so dead set on us not being able to earn at least one weapon ticket for completing content; then they should be sold at a fixed gem amount. This way folks will know how much they need to grind in order to purchase the skin they want.
Server: Maguuma
Wow so no way to earn the molten weapon skins in game? I would have thought that the anger from the community over needing to play the cash shop rng game would hae seem some changes. What is the point of playing the content with no rewards?
Server: Maguuma
To the OP. I think the reason why this topic sank is because of the devs. It has been made abundantly clear that the guardian class will not be affective damage dealers at range. Besides, look at all the patch notes. Update after update has seen nerfs to the class with the intent of forcing into only a few viable builds/roles. With the latest patch preview in our boon builds will get a indirect nerf.
Its not surprising that folks have quit the class or the game entirely.
Server: Maguuma
Don’t for get about your dodge rolls that can heal. With high crit chance your vigor will be up a lot allowing you to dodge/negate attacks completely and give some healing. I highly recomend the hammer for this. Each foe the hammer hits has a chance to crit. However that symbol you smash down can hit up to five foes each time it pulses and each of those hits have a chance to crit as well. Perma vigor equals more dodging equals more healing.
Server: Maguuma
Well the main selling point about the mace is the default attack’s third hit which heals and the regen symbol. Both of these benefit from healing power which this build largely ignores. In high level fractals things can one shot you into oblivion. The insignificant healing from the build will do absolutely nothing for you. Based on the gear it looks like a full bore damage dealing build than support healer. If you use this setup I would ditch the mace and shield. Keep your hammer/gs/staff and add in a scepter/focus.
Server: Maguuma
To a point I understand the OP. Guardians do have some active skills that can defend someone but for a very short period of time. Shield #5 can force foes back, Sanctuary is similar but neither of them protect against aoe which is frustrating at times. The staff’s #5 skill line of warding can slow down an advance. The hammer can knock back and create an impassable ring. However these are short durations with long cooldowns.
A lot of the Guardian abilities are through boons and condition removal. You can kind of target person with Purging Flames by standing near them. In my opinion a lot of guardian support is done passively and by that I mean you can’t target a specific person. Granted in dungeons you can pop shouts near your team and they will get the boon. However in WvWvW or in open world PvE its hit or miss. Your team mate gets a much needed regen or protection boon or some random player that was doing just fine will gets it instead.
To be perfectly honest if your looking for that feedback of watching someone’s health bar spike up from your heal or pulling an enemy off a teammate; your in the wrong game. In GW2 everyone and I mean everyone is basically a damage dealer with some secondary abilities that in other games would be considered a secondary profession. For example the Guardian is a GW1 Dervish primary with secondary mix of Monk and Paragon.
Server: Maguuma
The problem is how aggro works in GW2. This game’s aggro system isn’t as rigid as other mmos. Some mobs will target the player doing the most damage. Others will target if you start to revive someone. Some have even claimed that mobs will target profession more often. My point is that not all mobs follow the same rules for aggro.
Basically you can’t hold the aggro of a mob as reliably like in other mmos. Sure you can spec to make your guardian really hard to kill. However if the boss is targeting your teammates your tank speck is pointless.
Now I am not saying your wrong with your trait points or your weapons. I used to run 0/0/30/30/10 with P/V/T armor knights and berserker jeweler with hammer, staff, and scepter/focus. Basically the AH hammer build floating around in the game.
As a guardian your job is not to hold the aggro for your team. Think of yourself as a boon generator that can remove conditions and deal steady damage on the front line.
You could also run the popular 0/15/30/20/5 build which would work great with your knights or berserker gear. The fun part about this build is that you can switch between running mediations or an AH shout build. You can also spam VoJ every time you kill a foe giving you and your team might stacks. You also get to watch your foes erupt into blue flames on a regular bases. Its fun for everyone.

Greatsword and staff are a good setup for farming events. Keep in mind that you don’t need first hit to get credit/loot from a mob. All you need to is help kill the target. The staff’s short ranged default aoe and symbol help you hit lots of mobs getting more loot. Staff skill Empower is great for supporting your team with might stacks along with a nice heal. The scepter is better against a main boss that you shouldn’t melee.
To each their own when it come to traits. I will say that in my opinion Two-handed mastery is better off in pvp than pve. Pure of voice is great with your shouts. Don’t leave home with out it.
When it comes to armor full Knights or a mix of knights with berserker gear is very popular. I used to run 0/0/30/30/10 with soldiers (p/v/t) with a hammer/staff for PvE and dungeons. Worked great only changed because I wanted some variety. If want further info that build let me know and I’ll post a link.
Server: Maguuma
I would keep a hammer, scepter (with focus), and staff in your backpack. I change my weapons a lot depending on the fight. Yes the scepter is a problematic in PvP but in dungeons it’s our best ranged damage option. Don’t forget Smite’s low cool down and fast cast time. If Anet would only make it a symbol… The staff is fantastic for an AH build and general farming.
Server: Maguuma
I only keep a sword because I have the fire dragon sword skin from the HoM.
It’s unfortunate but the GS is a better choice in most situations. The sword default attack triggers VoJ’s burning a lot but condition damage is not our best damage option. The teleport skill is kind of pointless for PvE since the GS can pull several targets for greater control. It also only works on flat terrain. Any elevation differences and your teleport my not work at all. In PvP the teleport can be useful for chasing down a target. The number 3 skill is just a joke and needs reworking. Most folks would think that a one handed sword could be used on the move. However any movement cancels the skill. Out of all melee weapons the 1h sword alone doesn’t give any boons. So if you’re running any type of boon build the 1h sword isn’t the best option.
I am not saying the 1h sword is so bad as to make it unplayable. It’s just that other weapons can perform the same tasks but better.
Server: Maguuma
At lvl 22 you won’t do much damage in dungeons. Those are meant for lvl 30+. Its always a good idea to post your current build so folks can help.
Server: Maguuma
Ignore the post above. PVE dungeon content can be challenging, and boon duration builds can be very strong, especially if you’re going for a more tanky build.
Here’s a sample boon build:
Just FYI Okamakiri, when folks say PvE they mostly refer to zones not dungeons. Yes dungeons are against npcs. However they are not same as general PvE roaming.
Server: Maguuma
PvE is incredibly dumbed down its not even worth talking about a PvE build. I used to run the standard AH meant to run in groups. I could solo any zone in the game with no problems. Basically any build with some semblance of synergy will do just fine in PvE.
If you’re looking for WvWvW boon build you could try the following:

Server: Maguuma
They will probably add them to the black lion chests as well. Since earning items via quest completion is bad thing compared to rng based drops from game store items.
Server: Maguuma
Adding my voice to the discontent regarding fused weapons. They should be earned through completing quests or collecting tokens from F&F related events. In my opinion current system violates the deal of “everything can be earned through normal gameplay”. I do not consider grinding out the coin to buy gems (which skyrocket in price) in a game store, to purchase keys, to unlock chests for a small chance, part of “normal gameplay”.
I also feel that the current system is unfair towards players that dual wield. They need to spend twice as much.
I know that fan boys will start frothing at the mouth towards any criticism of the anointed GW2. Just remember that players criticize games they like and want to improve.

Maybe she could try out a water ele. As an ele should could only have one weapon equiped at a time. No possible way to she could get mixed up. Put her in full clerics gear and tell her to spam those heals. Yeah it may not be the end all of builds but who cares. If your just playing to have fun this should work.
Server: Maguuma
Oh for the love of everything good and nice. This is exactly what Anet didn’t want in their game.
That people had to pull up their calculators before a fight, to figure out what would be the most effecient way to build their characters, instead of just jumping into battle and rely on their skills to pay the bills.Ah well, at least we don’t have silly addons like GearScore or damage meters, like you had in WoW.
No one is forcing you to use this builder. Nothing wrong crunching numbers before buying gear.
Server: Maguuma
Fear is a condition, but works differently from the rest.
It works like a stun, so you can’t remove it like normal conditions.
And that’s excluding all the presumed issues with the functionality of Pure of Voice.
Thanks for the inforomation. I am still wondering if Fear is supposed to work this way or is it a bug. Does Fear benefit from condition duration bonus?
Server: Maguuma
I have switched between 6x soldier runes and our trait Pure of Voice with all our shouts. The only one that seems to remove fear is Hold the Line. None of the other shouts appear work. I thought it was just my lag, but after some testing I am not so sure. Does the fear condition follow different rules?

I will be very surprised if they boost Guardian offensive …anything. Just look at the updates. They have already nerfed retaliation a while back limiting a damage build. The sword, an offensive weapon, received a bit of nerf from changes to vigorous precision. Changes which favored/didn’t hinder slower hammer and mace. Then the baffling changes to Spirit Weapons also served to hinder an already struggling damage boost.
Now compare this to changes made with support oriented weapons and build and you will see the direction of the class. Heck even our burn builds will become useless (in PvE) whenever they add Primordus. His minions are immune to burning.
Server: Maguuma
I run something similar.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fUEQJASWlUgqCXGSLEf4ERWBRi9QjfsjXPcIFZIA;TIALKGWA
My runes are the standard 2x monk, 2x water, and 2x major sanctuary. Full soldiers armor P/V/T with mix of ruby and emerald jeweler.
If you’re going for a support Guardian then Hammer over Greatsword. Not saying you can’t use a GS with this build or in dungeons. I know that you can give might boons out to help boost your teams damage via empowering might, but consider the following. Pop Purging Flame followed by the hammer’s MB to grant 3 stacks of might. With my setup, those 3 stacks of might stay up for over 30 seconds. With the 10 points in Virtues you can use the talent to reduce the CD of PF to 32 seconds. Basically a permanent damage boost for you team.
Don’t forget that the hammer’s skill Ring of Warding creates a light field (something not in the tooltip) when you use Mighty Blow. This will give Area Retaliation, again boosting damage output. All this plus the Symbol of Protection that grants the protection boon, deals damage, and gives a little healing.
The Greatsword is better suited for farming and or offensive Guardian builds. The Hammer is a better choice if you’re filling the support role.

Tyber: Noted, but be patient with me! I’ll test 1-2 builds with greens. If I go your route, it’ll take me a good while to purchase all exotic gear/runes/trinkets/weapons and have a perfect feel of your build…
Oh I wasn’t expecting and immediate response. Sorry for the confusion.
6x Superior Soldier Runes and you lose a conditon each time you use shout. Timeing is everything. For example Risen Hylek have an attack the shoots poison darts. Wait for them finish such an attack then use condition removal. You could also use Pure of Voice instead of the runes. It does have some bugs with it so use with care http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Pure_of_Voice

At level 36 you don’t have access to some of the great combos of unilities, traits and weapons yet. So don’t be too hard on yourself. Keep in mind that it’s not your job to soak up the hits for your team. If anyone is telling you that they are just looking for someone to blame for their failures.
I am just going to list some synergizes and you can pick and choose the ones you like.
Sword:
Pop Zealots Defense then immediately pop Judges Invention. ZD has a delay so using JI doesn’t interrupt the skill. It’s a tactic used in PvP but it works well in PvE for better burst damage.
Greatsword:
Symbol of Wrath creates a light field. Use the leap after SW to grant retaliation boon. If your fast enough you can use the Symbol of Swiftness skill from the staff on a target then switch to GS and leap into the field for the same result. You could also use Purging Flames then leap to create fire armor which burns foes. Remember that you don’t need to leap into or out of these fields. I generally just run to the target, pop PF then leap. Causes a lot of burning to multiple foes.
Turn off the melee assist (if it’s on). This will allow you get inside the hitbox of a foe. Do this with Whirling Wrath and all the spins plus the projectiles will hit the hit the target. If you’re on the outside then the projectiles may or may not hit the target, lowering your damage output.
Hammer:
Pop Purging Flames then use the hammer’s Might Blow. This grants you and other near you 3 stacks of might boons that have a long uptime. It’s not listed in the tooltip but the hammer’s Ring of Warding creates a light field. Use RW then MB to grant Area Retaliation. Also don’t forget the 3rd attack in the default attack chain creates a Symbol of Protection that grants the protection boon and damages foes inside. When you get enough trait points you even make the symbol heal overtime.
Utilities:
I like the shouts Hold the Line and Stand Your Ground. HL for when you’re feared, immobilized, or crippled. SYG for protection and regen. Save Yourselves does grant a lot of boons but the cooldown is just to long for tastes. I have already listed the benefits for Purging Flames.
I have stayed away from signets and meditations. Signet of Resolve is okay but I like Shelter. Its blocking ability allows you get the full heal. Combine this with Renewed Focus and you can have 5 seconds of invulnerability. That’s a long time in a GW2 fight. Meditations are mostly for soloing and definitely for damage not support.
Everything I have listed is by no means the final word in playing a Guardian. They are my tactics and preference I have learned since the betas. Feel free to carbon copy them or modify as you see fit to match your play style.
Server: Maguuma
Hope it helps. Just remember that staff is just there to use while your GS skills are on coold down. Your primary weapon is the GS.
Do please post how the builds work for you. I hate giving advice to someone only to never hear how they did.
Server: Maguuma
I use P/V/T armor from HotW (looks great for a Guardian) with an AH build. I like the balance between damage and survivability. The issue with clerics is that you deal next to nothing in damage. Yeah you gain a lot in the survivability department. However you may find yourself in situations of only prolonging the inevitable. Before the Jan 28th update Cleric Guardians could hang on in the fight preventing the boss from resetting. This would allow the team (if needed) to waypoint reze back into the fight. Now you can only waypoint if no one is in combat. Your team ends up just watching you deal no damage until you die or leave the fight.
I really believe you can’t just support like in other mmos. You need to help the team kill the target by dealing damage.
Always remember, the best damage mitigation in the world is a dead foe.
Server: Maguuma
I am assuming this is for PvE and yes you can so without the hammer.
Traits:
The 0/15/30/20/5 is just fine. Even though EM trait does shine in groups it still grants you might boons which does helps your damage output and helps support your natural regen. Always remember to pop VoJ for the blinds and extra might boons from the 5 points in Virtues. I don’t remember the name but take the honor trait that shortens shouts CD by 20%.
Gear:
If you’re soloing go Knights gear. If you’re grouping a lot go with Berserker. Both boost your crit chances. Knight gear gives your extra toughness, Berserker gives you extra damage for your crits. For runes I suggest the standard 2x monk, 2x water, 2x major (not superior) sanctuary to give you 45% uptime on your boons. You could swap out the sanctuary runes for your choice of 2x fire, hoelbrack, or strength for 55% uptime on the might boons. Whichever is the easiest for you to acquire. Lots of options for a Sigil. Sigil of Fire for extra aoe damage provided you have the coin. Sigil of Air if you’re on a budget. Sigil of Blood from some life steal works too. Whatever you want really.
Skills:
Stand Your Ground, Purging Flames, and Hold the Line. Yes I know shouts work better in groups. But you still benefit from the regen, protection, stability, and retaliation boons solo or not. Remember you can create a fire shield with the great swords leap. Or use WW for flaming projectiles. For your elite Renewed Focus. If you get in over your head pop all your virtues for extra boons form the 5pts in Virtues. Then pop RF for seconds of God mode and fully charge your virtues. Which you can pop again if you’re really in trouble.
Weapons:
I highly recommend the staff. The default attack is a mid-ranged aoe that can cause a lot of crits granting might boons and healing from AH. This attack also hits targets through objects. The 2nd attack passes through multiple foes and has a relatively short CD. Just remember that the orb can get stuck in terrain so you will to detonate to trigger the cd which increases to 11 seconds. Really wish they would fix this but I guess they had more important things to work on. Like baby quaggan backpacks. The 3rd skill is handy for just getting around with the swiftness boon. But it also deal damage (not a lot) which can increase your number of crits. Which in turn grants you might boons. Which in turn gives you some healing from AH. It also creats a light field you can leap into to grant retaliation. The 4th skill Empower gives a nice stack of might boons (which you get a heal from AH) and heal at the end of the channel. The catch is you can’t move so use wisely. The 5th skill Line of Warding is situational but it can have its uses.
If you feel more comfortable with the scpeter and off hands then use them . Only give the staff a chance. I think you will be surprised just how useful it can be in a damage build.
You can use other trait combos like the 0/5/30/30/5 for greater utility for a more support build but less on damage. If you do this trait for symbols.
Server: Maguuma
I used the sword/torch and loved it. It does need some tweaks to make it more viable but I still matched or got very close to GS damage but it took high precision and specifically traiting for it and even then it wasn’t quite as effective, though still pretty good. I HATE HATE HATE the hammer. The hammer, in my opinion, only has 2 skills. The immobilize is ok, but would be a lot better if it wasn’t just a straight line that missed all of the time. I HATE knockbacks in group situation (vast majority of content) because it screws everybody up and so I won’t use it myself unless interrupting and even that is hard since the 4 skill has a massive cast time. The 5 skill is my least favorite, why would I want to block other enemies out if I WANT to do AoE damage? All of that plus the ridiculously small range on the 2 leap and the RIDICULOUSLY long cast times of the auto attacks and I just won’t use it. GS is superior in every way imho.
Just fyi on the hammer. The Ring of Warding creates a light field. Using MB after RoW creates area retaliation. MB after Purging Flames give 3 stacks of might for around 20 seconds depending on traits and gear. I use the knock back just before I heal followed by the snare just to make a point.
