Is there any way to craft or buy the starter pauldrons (with guardian symbol)? Accidentally sold them a while ago and I really wanted to use them as a skin for my exotic armor.

I would agee that both tomes are junk. Renewed Focus I like. You can pop all three virtues then hit Renewed Focus and pop all three again. The three seconds of god mode comes in handy and all for a 90 second cool down. I like it.

I thought it was Condition.

It’s plus boon duration. Yeah Kinda pointless considering your giving up a third stat boost.

How do I play an effective guardian?

Tyber Valens.5148

I have played a Guardian since launch and I can tell you it gets easier with higher levels. The reasoning? We have some pretty good synergy with our utility skills.

Here is what I have been running as of late. Keep in mind that recent changes have made some question the viability of Altruistic Healing. I am still using the AH setup you see below in group fights around Orr and I am satisfied. I use the Monks Focus version when I am soloing. I find this setup very flexible without needing to spend coin on retraining traits or several gear sets. Works great for farming too. Keep in mind that you don’t to land the killing blow or tag the mob first. Just so long as you contribute damage you can get a drop. All the aoe attacks with this setup help increase the number of mhps (mobs hit per second).

Traits : 0/10/30/30/0
Radiance: Signet Mastery
Valor: Meditation Mastery, Retributive Armor, and Altruistic Healing
Honor: Writ of Exaltation, Empowering Might, and Writ of the Merciful
Gear: Full exotic berserker armor with 5 Superior runes of the grove. Exotic berserker great sword with major sigil of bloodlust. Cleric staff with sigil of air. Berserker rings, earrings, and amulet.
Skills: Signet of Reslove, Stand Your Ground, Hold the Line, Smite Condition, and Renewed Focus (elite).
Let me first say that this is a modified version of Silent’s Paladin build so credit where credit is due.
My set up is all about the boons while keeping respectable crit chance and damage. Right now I get 41% crit chance so I can keep around 2 to 3 stacks of might on folks and more in bigger fights. Altruistic Healing + Stand Your Ground + Hold the line in a 6 man group = 24 boons that all give me a healing benefit. Then I still have the staff skill Symbol of Swiftness which damages foes, heals (with the trait), and give me a heal because of the boon it provides. Then Empower which has its own built in heal and the stacks of might in big groups also gives me heals. The greatsword’s default attack ends with might boon so heal and the 4 skill symbol of wrath give me a boon, damages foes, and heals me. All this with our passive regen ability, the two evade rolls that end with a heal, and last but not least the nuke selfheal of signet of resolve.
A note on healing. This build will not outpace the damage you take. You still need to evade and not stand in mob made aoe fire etc. Think of heals as damage mitigation.

The 5 Superior Runes of the Grove give me a 25% chance on hit to give me protection boon for 4 seconds with a 30 second cool down. Trust me, you will be surprised how often this triggers. Oh and it’s a boon so heal from Altruistic Healing.
Something else to remember is that those symbols can generate critical hits just like weapons. So if you read the battle field right, you can place the symbol from the staff on one fight and join in at another part and drop the symbol from your greatsword. Then spin and watch the might boons start stacking up on your team and healing pour on to you.

The above works better in groups. If you’re soloing then change out AH for Monks Focus and Empowering might for either Two Handed Weapon Mastery or Symbols Last Longer trait. Change the utility skills to Judges Intervention, Purging Flames and Smite Condition. Keep Renewed Focus. If you like you can take 5 points from Radiance and put that into Virtues for extra boons from virtue activation. If you do this I would change your heal to shelter. If you find that you like this version you could try using Knights Armor instead of Berserker.

Haven’t tried this out in any of the PvP formats but in PvE it’s been a lot of fun.

thanks though i barely could follow that since i am only 39 and havent tried a staff yet or had much experience with dealing with healing. something to keep reading as i level and understand more of what is mentioned.

am i wrong in thinking since i am not ingame that you put 30 in each the toughness and vitality talents and 10 in precision ? that is what i remember from 0,0,0,0,0,. guess i will find out later when i log in.

when you solo do you find your doing well ? I’m a charr so i don’t get the dogs you mentioned.

So far i seem to be able to handle multiple mobs above my level and even veterans until today when i ran into those Xmas little demons from the gift things you unwrap. they kick my kitten big-time. Only thing that really hurts is dots but i have skills that get rid of most of them.

i’ll probably take your advice on radiance and put 5 points into virtues instead. i do like those boons and when i am in trouble i pop every virtue so 3 boons.

Yes 30 points in Valor (Toughness/Critical damage), 30 points in Honor (Vitality/Healing Power), and 10 points in Radiance (precision /condition damage). Lately though I have put just 5 points in precision and put 5 points into virtues, using shelter instead of the signet. Don’t worry about not being able to use the hounds. They are just a gimmick that can easily get past if you ask someone to kite while you snag the skill point. I wish I could make a video showing my game play but computer combined with wireless internet isn’t always stable. I have tried making videos before but my game just lags and I get the much hated error 7. Yes you can solo general PvE though champs may prove a problem.

In the low levels stick with power, toughness, and vit gear. Healing power and precision imo is only useful if you can devote a lot points and have the traits unlocked to add some extra kick.

Is the Glacial Heart worthwhile?

in Guardian

Posted by: Tyber Valens.5148

I’m currently on the fence about the Altruistic Healing build.

The recent nerf to Vigorous Precision is why I learned about it in the first place (you forum-goers whine and moan like crazy~), and of course, the nerf is one of the big reasons to why I’m reluctant to switch over.

I love the chill-condition, so Glacial Heart seems really neat, but that 45 second cooldown dampens my enthusiasm. Is it worth using, or should I wait until it’s buffed?

Edit: Oh, and I’m a PvE-focused player. I wouldn’t be asking if I were PvP. :P

Word of advice Insulting the people you want to answer your question isn’t a smart idea.

I have played a Guardian since launch and I can tell you it gets easier with higher levels. The reasoning? We have some pretty good synergy with our utility skills. Good choice on the Renewed Focus. The Tomes have really long cool downs for short duration of use. They also prevent you from using your healing skill. If you’re a Human you can use the Hounds of Balthazar. I have used them to keep a champ busy while I snag the skill point, or needed run for my avatars life.

My guess is that those guardians went sold zeal and randiance with zerk gear. I’d recheck your math since a crit hit is 150% of base base damage + crit damage%. You should be doing more than 111% even without a boost to crit.

I am also thinking about swtiching my berserker for knights but for PvE defense build.

Getting into the guardian groove

in Guardian

Posted by: Tyber Valens.5148

Tyber Valens.5148

@OP
I was in the same boat at launch. My Guardian seemed to die alot against the most simple mobs. After tinkering and talking to folks I found the right combo gear and skills to match my play style.

As the for the Guardian being boreing. Well we are a support class, so we tend to fight through our allies. Boon application doesn’t come with flashy animations, and sometimes our job can be a thankless one. Just remeber that every condtion you remove keeps your people up for longer. Every Might boon you give helps kill the enemy faster.

Is the damage dealt by the Retaliation boon based off of the player’s power that generated the boon, or based on the damage dealt by an enemy hit? If its based on the player’s power then the tool tip needs a complete rewording. It does actually reflect damage (reduce damage tanken) back nor is it based on the enemy damage dealt.

Power or Precision?

in Guardian

Posted by: Tyber Valens.5148

Tyber Valens.5148

For me id rather have power than precision (because power makes retaliation hit harder)… but my guard is a sPVP bunker… depends on your build.

I don’t believe the player’s power stat boosts Retaliation boon. I think it completly dependent on the sources stats.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Retaliation

The “source” being the player who put the retaliation on, yeah. In other words, you or your ally.

If you’re just looking at raw damage, power is almost always better. It simply scales better (it’s about 1% per 10 points) versus precision, which, at max possible crit damage (103%) is worth about .75% per 10 points.

I thought “source” refered to the enemy that dealt the damage? That tool tip is very misleading

Tyber Valens.5148

Thank you Tyber for going into detail. Learned a bit from that. Still learning the more subtle parts of this class. Tho I’m not real big on staff, I like the GS & hammer or GS & sword/torch I’ve been going with. I went ahead with the 30 0 10 30 0 build so I could try it. haven’t given it a full test drive but ran around Orr a bit and I was quite happy with how fast I was taking things down.

What I’m wondering is, is this such a bad build or is it just a matter of play style?

Everything about this game is about your play style. A setup for one person may seem clunky. Yet another would rock the world with the same build. You should always go with setups that “just feel right” when played. Personally I prefer to run with a melee and a ranged weapon set. I like knowing that if I need to disengage from melee I can still fight at range.

I won’t comment on your set up since I don’t know the gear, runes, type of weapon (berserk, cleric, etc), or traits your using. I will say that if you have found a combination that works, run with it.

Regeneration + Retaliation Theory Crafting

in Guardian

Posted by: Tyber Valens.5148

Tyber Valens.5148

Don’t fall into the trap thinking you can heal tank your way through combat. Healing in GW2 is very different from other games. When thinking about your builds treat Guardian heals as protection, not life sustaining heals.

You real should read the wiki about the retaliation boon since the tool tip in game is misleading. In your post it sounds like you think that the retaliation boon prevents damage. No damage is actually prevented. Think of retaliation as a free attack based off the damage dealt by the source.

Bleeds’s statement about retaliation is true. In my opinion the current state retaliation is the least effective boon we can provide.. Think about it; retaliation only works if you get hit. I think might is probably the best boon we can spam (with the right traits and weapons). Regeneration is probably the second best boon since it’s a passive heal that is only debuffed by poison. Protection boon received a lot of attention with the Altruistic Healing Hammer build. Unless you’re running that build protection boon isn’t as great when compared to regen. Yeah the regen doesn’t give a lot of hp, but it’s still more than protection. Swiftness is good for when you get over your head and need to make a run for it. Aegis is really nice… against one attack.

Just one man’s opinion.

I hope it works for you. Just remeber that the healing isn’t going to be the same as healing in other mmos. Its not going to out pace the damage you take so don’t expect to fight like a tank. Think of the healing as damage mitigation.

@Azure
Here is what I have been running and it seems to keep me and my allies up.
All this with our passive regen ability and last but not least the nuke selfheal of signet of resolve.
Haven’t tried this out in any of the PvP formats but in PvE it’s been a lot of fun.

I highly recomend the build you will find in the above link. It really does depend on your play style though. If you’re in an active guild that groups alot then you can maybe do without stacking power. If you solo alot then your going to need some power. I think as a generally rule its not good pour points into traits that you also have in armor. Example: 30 points in valor and toughness based armor and jeweler. Yeah you will have great toughness but at some point you need to need to kill the target. You need some balance. Always remeber the best damage mitigation is a dead foe.

Keep in mind that GW2 isn’t as rigid compared to other mmos. The classes where created to allow players a lot of freedom. I personal like the build because I can easily change from support to damage. As always do what works for you.

Adding my praise to choir about this design. Very good balance between aggression and support in the “build”. Glad to see you’re using the staff now. Its a great weapon for this setup. You should make a 2.5 video update about the staff to boost converts to the weapon. Before I had watched your video I would ignore the racial elites thinking them inferior to the profession skills. Those pups have saved me from death when soloing by drawing the attention of mobs so I can run if I get in over my head. I have use them keep a champ busy while I grab skill point. However I have also been using Renewed Focus. I can pop Virtue of Justice for an aoe blind (with trait), then Virtue of Courage, punch Renewed Focus for 3 seconds of invulnerability and recharge my all my virtues for a second round of aoe blind group aegis. Think about all that damage mitigation. All this for a 90 second cool down on Renewed Focus; short for a Guardian Elite.
Your thoughts?

I just gave up trying to take part in the events. The game lagged so much I couldn’t really take part. I couldn’t even see the crabs or whatever they are supposed to be. They wouldn’t render.

I must say I am very surprised that this bug hasn’t been fixed yet. Players unable to proceed with the storyline mission shouldn’t be told to wait for the next update. This isn’t a minor problem.

Oh well this is just great. Explain the logic of this to me. How is that the problem is on my end with only your game; all my other games work just fine. I am shocked at their ambivalence towards a problem that is so blatantly NOT on our end. If it’s true that our end is the problem, then what are the systems requirements for this game? What type of connections is needed? If I had known that your game won’t work with my ISP I wouldn’t have purchased your game. Guess this is when no subscription is a bad thing. If I had to pay every month then Anet would have a reason to fix the problem or else kiss the subs good bye. Hanging us out to dry like this just isn’t right.

I have been having this problem for weeks. I posted in this thread a few pages back. This is just becoming sad. The lack of a response from anyone even resembling support isn’t helping. We need to hear from the “powers that be”.

It was odd. I was having this problem as I posted a while ago. Last Thursday I played without using my guilds mumble and was able to play just fine through till Saturday. Sunday evening I starting getting the familiar lag preceeding the error:7 DC. Would really like a comment from Arenanet about this issue. Its serious and game breaking. Personally I may just give playing until its fixed. No fun getting DCed shortly after logging in.

Khunavaang and Glint are not like the Elder dragons. I think one them even states this difference. The Elder dragons are supposed to be bad and Khunavaang and Glint are the good dragons.

We don’t know what is going on in Elona or Cantha. I’M pretty sure that Elona is a mess (thanks to our brave heroes in GW1 who didn’t stop Palawa Joko on time!), but we don’t know anything about Cantha. For all that we know, they might be thriving in a mighty empire there

Well we do know a few things about Cantha. We know that the Emperor was able to raise forces strong enough to subjugate both the Luxons and the Kurzicks making Cantha a united empire. I think references in the lore suggested he pushed out the Tunge as well. The amount of money and man power needed for these campaigns would suggest a human kingdom free of outside threat (or at least able to stabilize the threats) to the degree they can launch successful campaigns of conquest.

From a Lore PoV they got arrogant with themselves and petty. The Charr were like that once and were pushed back from Ascalon because of it. Now the Humans have to pay their due. I like it. I like having a fantasy-style Battlestar Galactica take on the Humans: We are so borked yet we still believe.

The Charr didn’t lose Ascalon to the Humans because of “arrogance” issues. They lost because the human gods gave humans magic which the Charr didn’t know about or could use. This led to the search for gods not to worship but to get power. The Flame Legion found Titans which are defeated in the Prophecies campaign. Then they start worshipping the Destoryers in the Eye of the North campaign. After these failed attempts to find gods for power they basiclly give up (except for the Flame Legion) searching for gods. This is why in GW2 you hear npc Charr say “We put our faith in machines, not false gods” and Rytlock’s statement " Your faith is your weakness human". It is also worth pointing out that in the lore the Human gods have pretty much stopped taking an active roll, just sitting back and watching. Humans must now stand or fall on on their own actions. A rather nice change from most fantasy games I think.

As it has already been stated humans are not just in Tyria, but also Cantha (Asian themed), and Elona (African themed). Elona has been taken over by Palawa Joko an undead necro you meet in the Nightfall campaign of GW1. If your looking for a possible storyline about humans pushing back to gain the upper hand; wait for this. It is also worth mentioning that other lands exsist in addation to the maps seen in both GW1 and the current map of GW2. Lands that may contain human kingdoms that have weathered the storms better than Ascalon, Orr, and Kryta.

Right after you complete the very brief tutorial you can travel to the PvP area called the Mists. Once there you will be max lvled with all weapon, utility skills unlocked, and the full 70 trait line points. In the practice area you can use training golems for target practice and square off against npcs of the other playable classes. Great way to test classes and builds. Hope this helps.
