Game Updates: World Boss Synchronization

I do not like the schedule. Please rectify.

How can any of the Dynamic Group Events be on a schedule? I think by definition they are mutually exclusive.

I tried to adhere to schedule when I played a few times this weekend, but the waiting around was utterly boring. If it weren’t for the Dragonite Ore, I would start skipping this content, period, as it doesn’t fit my schedule.

The Megaserver ranking system could avoid placing players into completed instances, and spin the instance down after it is abandoned or after some reasonable amount of time has passed. It should probably also bias players toward newer or less complete maps.

The typical open-world map could become a complex state machine of related DEs that progress the map eventually toward some sort of climactic encounter like a World Boss.

I think that we were thinking along the same lines as we were each typing up our suggestion.

Feedback/Questions: The Megaserver System: World Bosses and Events

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Unindal.9102

I would like to offer up a solution to the proposed Megaserver System’s World Bosses and Events schedule that the community (myself included) has spoken out against and has been so opposed to over the past week.

Before I get started, I would like to take a snippet from The Megaserver System: World Bosses and Events blog post:

The megaserver system is a weighted load balancer for players. It aggregates data about you, like your party, guild, language, home world, and the map copy where people you like to play with can be found. Using this data, it ranks all possible versions of a given map by attributing a score to each. You’re placed in the map with the highest score, which is the one with which you have the most affinity.

I completely agree with grouping people together based on the above criteria for a specific version of a map. I think that there is one very important piece missing from the equation that I am going to call Event Affinity.

Event Affinity – The likelihood that a player will enjoy a specific dynamic event.

This term is used in parallel with the Map Affinity used from the blog post, but they are different in how each of the two operate:

  • Map Affinity – The player has already decided that they want to go to a specific map, and the game will now determine what version of the specific map to place the player
  • Event Affinity – The player may or may not know yet that they want to do a specific event, but based on previously gathered data about a player and other factors, the game should have an understanding of what events the player would like to do

I think the best analogous examples for Event Affinity I can think of is Netflix’s Recommendations or YouTube’s Suggestions; you don’t know you will like it, until you try it.

If the game is now keeping track of Event Affinity for all players,

  • Would it not be possible for the game to determine when it makes sense to kick off a new dynamic event for the players and even new maps to support the dynamic event?
  • Would it not be possible for the game to partition players and give separate notifications for when an event is about to begin possibly through an improved World Map?
  • Would it not make sense for players to have the ability to set their own Event Affinity to the highest value when they are looking for a specific dynamic event possibly through the Looking For Group tool?

I invite others to reply with comments, and I will try to answer any questions that come up. I don’t want a schedule!

In all honesty, I find this setup for the World Bosses to be a step backwards. Being a casual player and only having the ability to play during the same block of time a few times a week, I enjoyed the variability of World Bosses I could encounter.

Three nights ago I did the Shatterer and the Fire Elemental in a one hour block. Last night I did the Golem and the Dwayna Event in a one hour block. Post feature patch, I will only be able to see the same World Bosses again and again.

This was one of the last few things that I really enjoyed in this game.

Mystic Forge nerf?

Unindal.9102

To kick things off, we’re adjusting the way Zommoros distributes rare and exotic rewards a bit, allowing for more variation in output. This is just a stepping stone to further changes that will make the Mystic Forge a much better experience in the future.

Distribution. Variation. I wonder if they are modifying the output loot tables so that when a proc happens there is more spread on the output level of items. This would make sense for use with the wardrobe and collecting skins.

I am also leaning towards a token based approach … https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/archive/suggestions/Precursors-Alternate-Method

Q: What are some examples of the factors that need to be weighed before implementing a new game mode for sPvP?

Example Answer: We want to implement team death matches, but there are a few factors we need to consider. We feel that the current games in conquest mode are of an adequate length in time yielding an amount of glory and rank at an acceptable rate. We want TDMs to give glory and rank at about the same pace as conquest maps so that the TDM maps don’t become abused. On top of that, in conquest mode if one team is continually overpowering the other team, natural splits occur as people move about to the capture points giving the underdogs a chance to come back. We’ve seen on average that a conquest match takes about eight (8) minutes in tournaments. We don’t want a TDM with a dominating team to continually slaughter the other for eight (8) minutes so we are talking about reducing the match lengths. We don’t yet know how this will affect the pace at which people complete the Daily PvP Achievement.

Something along those lines would be great!

There is a very rare condition that exists to reproduce this bug, but from what I have been able to discern is it is somehow related to picking up (or attempting to pickup) a banner on my warrior. My warrior will enter a state where I can no longer use any weapon skills, healing skills, utility skills, or any interaction with open-world items using the ‘F’ key. If I use a ground targeting skill, I will get the targeting on the ground, but after depressing the skill, no activation occurs.

This has happened twice over the course of this weekend since updating on Friday, once yesterday, and once today. The only way to rectify it has been to log out.

Teleporting Farming Bots

in Suggestions

Posted by: Unindal.9102

Unindal.9102

From my research of what you can and can’t do, the “teleport” is utilizing the fact that your coordinates (x,y,z) are stored in the client and not checked against the server often enough.

When a person appears on a node, they have already set their x,y coordinate correctly, but they are either really high in the sky, or really deep underground. Being that high in the sky or deep underground, no one is able to see them, and there is no collision with objects allowing pathing algorithms to make it look like they are actually running around. Once they get to directly above or below a node, they modify their z coordinate and appear right on it to harvest.

I may be completely off-base, but this is what I have seen is possible based on my findings.

What happened to the no grind philosophy?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Unindal.9102

Unindal.9102

In my opinion, the only grind in the game is self-induced.

I have a very close friend that cannot enjoy the game because of his obsession to have the best gear in the game at all times. He feels the same as the OP. Before he can enjoy the game, he has to grind to get the gear he “needs” so he can start to enjoy playing the game.

My point of view is vastly different than that of my friend and the OP. I play the game with the best gear I can reasonably obtain, and enjoy the challenges that this presents. I still do explorable dungeons. I still WvWvW. I still enjoy playing the game.

There is no grind for me. Just a game to play and enjoy.

Precursors - Alternate Method

in Suggestions

Posted by: Unindal.9102

Unindal.9102

I would like to offer up my opinion on an alternate method to obtaining Precursors while still using the Mystic Forge. I believe that using the Mystic Forge is an aspect of the game that must truly be experienced before someone can own a Legendary weapon. However, I do feel that the current method for obtaining a Precursor is not ideal because of the lack of reward on repeatedly unsuccessful attempts. The option to buy a Precursor on the Trading Post is not an attainable goal with the current inflation of prices and forces players to the Mystic Forge for all the wrong reasons.

This solution is to help keep people active in the game, use the Mystic Forge, curb the inflation prices of Precursors on the Trading Post, and give some sort of idea on a final end as to when someone can get the Precursor of choice.

Precursor Icons
A collectable item sold by Miyani for explicit use in the Mystic Forge to improve chances of receiving a specific Precursor.

  • Individual Precursor Icon for each Precursor sold at a price of two (2) gold
  • Account Bound
  • Collectible and able to be deposited into a Collection Tab in your Bank
  • Stackable up to 250
  • Improves chances of receiving a specific Precursor by 0.05% per Icon when used with new Mystic Forge recipes

New Mystic Forge Recipes
The new Mystic Forge recipes will require the use of the Precursor Icons and the associated weapon type of the Precursor. Successful attempts at a Precursor will yield a Precursor (and thus destroying the Precursor Icons) while unsuccessful attempts will yield more Precursor Icons as follows:

  • (X) Precursor Icons + (3) Level 71-80 Rares = (X+[0..3]) Precursor Icons
  • (X) Precursor Icons + (3) Level 71-80 Exotics = (X+[0..5]) Precursor Icons

The varying amount from [0..3] and [0..5] would behave very similarly to how the Mystic Salvage Kit breaks down armors and weapons for Globs of Ectoplasm.
If all else fails and someone has been very unlucky with the Mystic Forge, one final new recipe would be a saving grace.

  • (1) Mystic Forge Stone + (250) Precursor Icons + (1) Level 71-80 Rare + (1) Level 71-80 Exotic = Precursor

Further Advancements
With the introduction of the Precursor Icons as an Account Bound Collectible, they can then be distributed in alternative ways as well; not just from Miyani for gold. Making them available on the Gem Store in packages of a random five (5) for 300 gems, or a potential reward from Daily and Monthly Achievements, or a potential reward from Zone Completions, or a potential reward from PvP Tournament Chests, etc. They could be integrated into every aspect of game play to give players the ability to earn them in however they feel like playing the game. This is not an entitlement, but merely a chance (and a small one at that) at obtaining more for just playing the game.
By allowing for the Precursor Icons to be Collectible, people may find it enjoyable to pursue more than one Legendary as they play the course of the game.

Challenges
From a developers standpoint, I can see where the challenge will lie with putting a variable amount of Precursor Icons into the Mystic Forge, but being a developer, I can speak that I know you are up for the challenge. I have also just performed a simple analysis on percentages and prices of the Precursor Icons, and they will need to be formally analyzed to see if they feasibly fit into the realm of how easy/hard the Precursors are supposed to be obtained.

Criticism
As always, I am open for some constructive criticism on this topic. I feel that this was a well thought out presentation for an alternate method of obtaining Precursors and I invite others to speak as well.

This is elite and I love it

Chance of Salvaging Ecto Changed?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Unindal.9102

Unindal.9102

I have done some checking; salvaging and recording the result. Basically the result came down exactly to what the kit said. Using a BLC kit I got approx 50% of the potential ecto’s. This would be like getting 150 ecto’s out of 100 exotics (which has max 3) Which is exactly what the kit says. I also tried a vendor salve kit which has 25% recovery. I got approx 22% of the potential ecto’s while salviging rare items.
The number are pretty consistent on my trials.

These numbers are very consistent with what I get as well. Adding my own analysis to the topic is as follows:

Rares get three independent rolls (/roll 100 for example) for each of the potential maximum three ectos that come out. This means that you will get either 0, 1, 2, or 3 ectos per salvage.

Now lets say that you use a Black Lion salvage kit with a (supposed) rate of 50%. I would then say that for each of the three rolls, if a roll is from 1 to 50, I get an ecto. So over the course of lets say 10 salvages of rares, I would expect to get 15 ectos. Sometimes more, sometimes less, but on average around 15.

Same exercise, but use a Master’s/Mystic salvage kit for salvaging rares that has a (supposed) rate of 25%. When the salvage happens with the kit, if a roll from 1 to 25 occurs for one of the three independent rolls, I get an ecto. 10 rares to salvage would lead to about 7 or 8 ectos on average.

Take it for what it is, but this explains (at least) in a logical well thought out process of how RNG can give you 0 ectos and how it can give you 3 ectos. This matches my findings as well as numerous other peoples findings as well.

TLDR: Black Lion: 1 in 1.5 out, Master’s/Mystic: 1 in .75 out

The Failed State of the Economy

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Unindal.9102

Unindal.9102

This games economy is greatly screwed buy the Trading Post, not the only thing screwing it, but the largest contributor. Due to the way taxes are implemented nearly everyone ends up posting items on the trader for less than what you can get for selling to a normal vendor. Example: item vendor value is 90c but everyone puts the item for sale as 91c and the tax is 3 copper, so not only is the seller not going to get his profit but buy doing this it prevents anyone from making a profit. It also forces people to look outside of game to get in game money, because people are purposefully blocking the ability of others to make a profit (I describe this as what is happening because the alternative conclusion is that 90% of this games players are idiots, so since that is LIKELY not the reason for the above scenario, it is most likely a real money conclusion).
REMOVE TAXES!!!! It only hurts the game, will help the economy, and is pointless to have them anyway.

PS: If you think “well people just want to help others out by posting items for less” think again, it is too much of a coincidence that 80% of the items on the market are posted as 1 copper above the vendor price. I would agree that some people just post at the lowest price set, but then that would make you one of the idiots for not noticing the tax amount and you not making a profit therefore contributing to the need for real money to generate in game money.

That’s my thought of the day which makes this game that much less fun to play and has me looking for the next.

You have to remember that this is a single auction house for many thousands of players. The fact that the prices get drove down so much so fast is that the supply is greater than the demand. It only takes a handful of people to make mistakes and not realize about the Trading Post tax to completely kill an items profit margin. Like I said, demand is very low for said item, and it will (most likely) never rebound.

With regards to whether taxes are good or bad. In your specific scenario, removing taxes will do nothing. People will still post down to the vendor price, and we’re back to square one. The reason that the items are pushed down “80% of the time” is because that what the game limits you at before it throws up the big red sign on the Trading Post window. This is when people realize that they should vendor the item instead.

If the Trading Post is a source of frustration for you, I would recommend just selling your items to the vendor. I do not feel that the game forces you to buy gold. If you feel the need to “be rich”, I would suggest simply just playing the game. I never recommend outright buying gems/gold because all of it can be earned in game by just doing what you want in the game. The game does not force you to need gold.

Massively: Where Guild Wars 2 Goes Wrong

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Unindal.9102

Unindal.9102

A little disappointed at the article. I don’t think that the author did there research on some of the topics, and I feel he was presenting the article in a biased manner.

With specific regards to the discussion of out-leveling gear in zones. I will refer to the Patch Notes for November 15, 2012.

  • The amount of loot that drops for downscaled players has been increased. You should now be able to receive level-equivalent loot until you are fighting at a downscaled level that is less than 2/3 of your actual level. You should also receive loot a greater percentage of the time as well as receiving a greater percentage of experience, gold, and karma. For level 80 characters, this means level 55+ areas will be able to drop level 80 gear and give about 75% or so of the other rewards. Previously, these areas would give level 77 gear at best and closer to 60% or so of your rewards.

You will still get level appropriate gear even after you “out-leveled” your zone.

I also have a particular problem with the statement, “it’s far easier to just ignore your personal story” when talking about the flow from region to region.

I’ll add my bias to it too, since the author obviously did, I found myself wanting to follow the Personal Story and move me from zone to zone. Yes, the game doesn’t make you do it, but if you are actually getting involved with the game and the stories that are being told, you will want to move from zone to zone. Just because the game doesn’t make you, doesn’t mean that it is a bad model. Anet did a great job of letting players play how they want, and the Personal Story is a great addition.

Overall, thumbs down on the article.

I have a feeling there is some type of US consumer law that says a person needs to display the content of an unknown lotto like package, exactly what a person could win ect (but not having to reveal the chances of receiving each particular item).

The problem is, even if this was true, you are not buying the boxes directly like you would buy a lottery ticket. You are buying a virtual currency (which has the amount displayed aka conversion ratio). What you do with the virtual currency is up to you.
