Good lord.

Was kinda hoping they’d be a bit more lenient on the new precursor collections since they were account bound and gated behind an expansion, with whatever new mats/tokens that could entail. I could straight up buy and complete several existing ones with my current mat supplies before completing just the precursor part of this.

It’s made me reconsider whether I want to even bother unlocking every spec on all my alts.

I was hoping to play through the expansion from the start as a full on reaper with a chronomancer and maybe herald on the side, so it looks like now I’m gonna try to rush those out as quickly as I can.

Stuff like Dragon Hunter, Tempest, and Daredevil, I dunno. Don’t think I’m going to care repeating the same process 9 times for each class, so the rest might just be skipped.

So if I want to create different characters of a same class, do I still have to jump through the same stupid hoops each time to unlock specializations for them too?

Sounds like it should be an account wide unlock at least, now. I know this crap is certainly going to get real old real fast when I finally get around to unlocking everything on every alt I have, and that’s not counting the class-duplicates.

Patch Today: Key Farming Impacted

I’ve had maybe 2 keys drop for me near launch, and that was it. Hearing that rate being increased in light of this change doesn’t fill me with any kind of hopeful expectation.

Never bought keys and probably never will. Sad, because maybe I wouldn’t mind dropping actual money on kitten rng chests from time to time if they were actually worth opening (like I do with Dota 2 chests).

But I guess I’ll have to settle for the joy of having to put up with this on top of the ticket scrap lottery.

That puts it one-up over this one in my book.

These “adventures,” from what I’ve played in the beta and have read since, seem boring, to be honest, and I hope nothing too important is gated behind a big grind composed of them.

I don’t really play MMO’s for solo experiences, as I find it much more fun to include others in my character’s “destiny,” or whatever marketing term they want to use for play. Different strokes for different folks, so it might satisfy some achievement hunters, but I’m sure even they’re holding out for word of new group content we’ve heard precious little of.

2015-ArenaNet Newyears Resolution

WalkinGoon.2408

For their new year’s resolution, community leads at ArenaNet informed our interviewers that nothing was off table just yet!

“In fact, we haven’t been able to have our meals on it for months now,” assured a very ecstatic living story writer, “The custodians should probably do something about it.”

Other members of the Anet staff shared similar sentiments on the past year in review. “Everyone talks about it, but it’s hard to just eat your takeout at your desk,” reports one designer, “there’s only so much space, and the keyboard and post-its keep getting in the way.”

When asked about what the community will look forward to in 2015, WvW developer Devon Carver said they weren’t ready to make any announcements just yet, but was happy to say that plans to clear the table were under way.

“A lot of the finer details are still being ironed out in community discussions, and we still have to work out where we’re gonna store all this stuff at,” said Carver solemnly over a debate of whether they could move some of the things into the intern’s closet or not. “We can’t say too much to spare our players from any false sense of commitments. Things are still very subject to change, that’s development after all”

For WvWers, ArenaNet was happy to announce the forthcoming “Spring Cleaning” tournament. Based off past iterations, players of Guild Wars 2 should know what to expect from the popular game mode, as the series will begin in February and last until spring break.

“We’ll probably clear out some of the table before my vacation in that time, but for now, there’s plenty of bags to pack. All in all, a work in progress.”

Charged Lodestone Nightmare

Been playing since headstart, and up until about 3 months ago, used to run all 3 CoE paths fairly regularly. In that timespan, I’ve managed to accumulate 158 charged cores, and 30 charged lodestones, apparently.

Take in mind that I didn’t go in with the express intent of farming lodestones, but neither did I sell any or use more than several in crafting.

You’re better off farming gold and buying them off the TP. But if you don’t have the gold now and you’re wanting 500 of them for yourself or to gift to anybody by Chirstmas, you might have to consider opening up your wallet and converting gems to gold.

Is "Living Story" interesting?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: WalkinGoon.2408

WalkinGoon.2408

For the living story stuff, I’m just going to save you the effort and tell you that, while the episodes can be an “okayish” 30-60 minute distraction from the game when free, they are in no way worth dropping gems on. Especially if it’s coming out of your actual wallet.

I say this because, to me, they are instances with a focus on story than gameplay. If you’re a someone who prefers running dungeons or party-centric PvE content, you’re not going to like them.

And while the writing’s not terribad, it’s only lukewarm at best. I feel like I’m watching filler for some fantasy soap opera on TV, in which each show ends with yet another cliff hanger that isn’t guaranteed to be resolved anytime soon. We’re 8 parts into it so far, and I just no longer care to complete them, and really wish they would get on with the main plot so that the actual world zones can be developed more.

Main draw for coming back for the season 2 stuff would lie in the two new zones, Silverwastes and Drytop. But they still feel like a work in progress, and are small compared to Frostgorge Sound and Orr.

As for an expansion, there’s still hopeful speculation from players, but ultimately no definitive word from ArenaNet whether one is in the works.

If you want my advice, I’d suggest checking back when LS season 2 is finishing up, where hopefully some big bosses will be revealed.

Or, safer still, just straight up wait how many months/years for an expansion to be released, as this game, in its current state, really needs some new meat-and-potatoes content for players to sink their teeth into.

There is "probably" no expansion, its a myth

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: WalkinGoon.2408

WalkinGoon.2408

I’m pretty skeptical about the existence of an expansion in development myself, but I can’t help but hope one’s in the works and the developers are just delaying an official announcement.

There have been a number of major content updates for other MMOs scheduled for release during the last quarter of 2014; namely expansions for WoW and SWTOR, the release of Arche Age, and a big update for FF14 (which also announced an expansion of its own for Spring 2015). If ArenaNet has one under wraps too, they might’ve decided to save the main announcement til after the hubbub about all the other games dies down, and competition for the media spotlight isn’t as crowded.

That’s just my speculation though, and it goes against my feelings that if that is the case, Anet would be better off saying outright that they do have an expansion planned, and more info will be released when they feel ready to.

As it stands now, it’s too easy to interpret those nod-and-wink hints about “big updates planned” as further extensions to the current Living Story, which has been lackluster for the past 2 years. With barely anything to go by, it’s better off to approach with lowered expectations than to try to build hype.

On the bight side, with no subscription, it’s easy to take a break from GW2 and pick it up again whenever you feel like it. And assuming the draws of the game haven’t spoiled other MMOs for you, now is certainly a good time to check out the major happenings in other games.

I always had a hard time seeing how any those statements could be anywhere remotely possible with how things are now, and have been for a looong time, at least in gold league. It was just obvious considering the large gaps between the servers, but I suppose it was easier to just slap up some matchup tiers together and call it an update or three.

Honestly, I wouldn’t mind seeing the same matchups if there was an effort to try and balance it for the sake of enjoyment between the servers.

Of course, I might just be jaded about playing on a server that was kitten upon for all WvW “tournaments” so far. But hey, maybe things will magically change on the fourth go around, right?

For Taimi and co, it was a breakthrough in understanding how the elder dragon powers work through the innovative Waypoint Relocation Device, and potentially the last chance re-reunite the races of Tyria to save the world once more.

For Councilor Phlunt, it was a Tuesday morning.

What I’m trying to say is, I’d rather see Destiny’s Edge #2 killed off and the living story become the Excellent Adventures of Faren and Chauncey (the Third).

Every new armor clips with Charr

WalkinGoon.2408

I think at this late in the stage of the games life, there is no excuse for why this kind of stuff still persists in new armor additions to the game. At the beginning of launch, it was more easily tolerable since, ya know, the game just launched and maybe the development for the other race armor got rushed in the crunch-time or whatever.

But it is now over 2 years later, and we are still seeing ugly-stretched details, floaty shoulders, tail-clipping and whatnot on the few new armor sets since then. It is made worse when you consider most of the stuff is sold through the gem store, which should definitely prioritize quality control when it is selling skins for $7-$12 worth of gems/gold a pop. Not to mention, the whole subject matter is made worst when the only response from ArenaNet about the issue (that I can recall) comes from a Q&A over a year old, where they practically stated they did not consider it much since the majority of players played human-characters.

The devs have already shown they are capable of taking on these issues with armor, so the reason as to why this stuff is still prevalent in even the newest skins just reeks of laziness, incompetence, staffing problems, or some combination thereof.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing more race-specific armor. It would certainly help in narrowing the focus to how it looks on one-race, as opposed to the issues they have when porting over armor that was obviously designed for human-models first and foremost.

A perfect video describing our NPE.

Feature pack 9/9: feedback

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: WalkinGoon.2408

WalkinGoon.2408

Before this update, I would have said level 20/25 would’ve been a better tipping point for unlocking elites, especially if paired with a rework of skill-point costs to ensure players weren’t depriving themselves of utility skills just to unlock them.

As I said on another topic, my lvl19 engineer got bugged and unlocked her full skillbar at lvl20. With some scrolls of knowledge, I got my elite that soon.

What I think? I’ve never had so much fun, I felt like my character was complete sooner than expected, I really love playing a low level character with a skillbar I can finally customize the way I want. I always thought lvl30 was too far to unlock an elite, and to me this bug reinforced my feeling. Luckily I could play as her for now, but my engineer will probably be the last alt I make, the feature pack removed all the fun…

As a fellow engi, I can certainly agree with the sentiment. :P

Back when I was starting mine, getting the many weapon kits, gadgets, and elixirs up were the key to being able to enjoy the class. Engineers especially are dependent upon utilities compared to, say, warriors or guardian. I fear these changes will make them feel like even more of a grind to new players, and turn them off from one of the most fun classes to play.

As for alts, I planned to start fresh with a Elementalist for the update, but these changes alongside the trait stuff just make the prospect of starting an alt from level-1 nauseating. Fortunately for me, I have enough experience scrolls and level-tomes to go straight to 40 to unlock my skills, but newcomers don’t have anywhere near that kind of luxury. It sucks knowing that they won’t be able to enjoy the game the way I came to love it when starting out.

Feature pack 9/9: feedback

WalkinGoon.2408

I’m unhappy with the new leveling locks for a lot of reasons already listed here, but the way the elite skills were handled has stuck out to me in particular.

If anything, unlocking elites should be available sooner rather than delayed. I don’t see how pushing these abilities back helps new players in any way, especially when many of the skills help define classes in a group setting, such as the Mesmer’s Timewarp and Elementalist’s Fiery Greatsword. Before this update, I would have said level 20/25 would’ve been a better tipping point for unlocking elites, especially if paired with a rework of skill-point costs to ensure players weren’t depriving themselves of utility skills just to unlock them.

Now, you can’t even get them in time for the first dungeon in this game, which is where elites like Warbanner really have their moments to shine. The explorable paths of Ascalonian Catacombs may be practically ran by level 80-exclusive parties, but its story-mode side is still an important rite of passage for introducing level-30s to dungeons. The old system at least got it right by recognizing that players shouldn’t be deprived of a full skill-bar by this point.

This change to gate elites (and the other class skills for that matter) behind an even higher level just seems like a weak attempt to pad-out the leveling by moving a carrot players prior to the update got to enjoy sooner. It does not serve any purpose in making the process more enjoyable or accessible to newbies at all.

And that’s the crux of these skill changes, for me. I don’t feel like ArenaNet implemented them to make it a better experience for new players at all, but it was more a matter of convenience to bring the western-client of Guild Wars 2 in line with the Chinese one.

Don’t get me wrong; I like the backpacks and think the equipment unlocks at certain levels are a neat addition, but it seems like some of these changes were just thrown in there as it was without consideration to how the western community would react to it.

It would be nice if the unique equipment/rings dropped from Fractals of the Mists were account bound on equip instead of soulbound, or at least purchasable by that dungeons tokens.

Currently have two ascended rings with stats I can’t really justify soul-binding to my thief that I primarily use for Fractals. A bit of a nitpick, but it honestly dissuades me from progressing onto the more difficult levels until I get a ring that suits the build I’m using for that character. It wouldn’t be so bad if there were other ways of obtaining them, but as it stands, I feel like I’m at the mercy of an RNG-pool I must repeatedly throw dice at until I get lucky.
