I believe this is a debacle. Some suggestions on how to make good

As a company, Zynga sees most of its revenue come from a small group of big spenders. For Zynga, losing 25% of the lowest spenders would likely have less impact than losing the 1% of top spenders.

I’m going to go ahead and assume this is the same for Anet as it is for Zynga. Chances are these changes are made to appeal to the people actually funding their game. As games are made as a way to make money, how can you be upset by this? Who cares about the manifesto, at the end of the day profitability is what matters.

I don’t think there’s anything to ‘make good’ on, this change is probably $$ driven and losing a bunch of players who aren’t buying gems isn’t going to impact them.

But I see people asking for people to join for Level 9, which if it goes that high up with new stages the entire time, its a massive amount of PvE content for just one dungeon.

Uhh you know there’s only 9 mini dungeons right? You get a random set of 3 each time, and it just keeps repeating over and over and over. The difficulty just keeps going up, it’s ‘endless’

I really hope this won’t devolve into a mass of people snarling at how OP x is or how bad y is, so let me state:

I am pretty bad at this game and having a hard time just completing personal story and basic pve questing.

With that in mind, what is the general consensus on all around easiest profession to learn with that is still viable in dungeons endgame. I don’t really pvp at all, so that isn’t a concern to me.

Signet 2h Sword warrior – you don’t have to cast your heal or any utility skills. You AE well, have some movement skills to run, and do massive damage.

Multiple threads where people have done the side by side math.

Ok, let do the side by side math.

Ascended ring: http://www.gw2db.com/items/71363-yakkingtons-ring

Yakkingtons Ring
51 Power
51 Precision
%10 Magic Find
+18 Precision
+18 Power

Unused Infusion Slot.

Total of 69 Power, 69 Precision, 10% magic find.

Exotic Ring: http://www.gw2db.com/items/58007-opal-orichalcum-ring

Opal Orichalcum Ring
+48 Power
+48 Precision
+3% Magic Find
and with an Exquiste opal Jewel
+15 Power
+15 Precision
+4% Magic find

Total of +63 Power, +63 Precision, +7% Magic find.

The ascended has 6 more power and precision and 3% more magic find.

63/69=.91

or the ascended has 9% more stats then the exotic, aside from the magic find. Its a boost, but not a major one, nor 20%

You should go look at the infusions and some of the non-MF gear stats ;-) Don’t forget to compare the new prefixes too.

I wish I knew. I logged in earlier today and all ~40 players that constitute my friend list and follower list were offline. That’s the first time I’ve seen that on a weekend; it’s pretty discouraging, especially as I’m on Tarnished Coast.

Almost my entire guild has quit over this patch. We were all excited for and paid for something different, I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case with other groups as well. It’s a bummer. “Where is every1?” — Off playing other games. LoL, WoW, Rift, etc.

Unreachable parts of map?

An MMO is comprised of regions typically referred to as Zones. Each zone has a hard edge to it, that edge may not always be represented digitally with a physical facsimile. Areas of the map that are blurred don’t actually exist, it’s not that you can’t get to them, it’s that there’s literally nothing there as it’s outside the created zones. Hope that helps!

That philosophy is not dead, at least not yet.

Lol denial at its finest. So they’ve introduced new gear, they cut down the way to acquire the ‘best in slot’ gear to a single path, and they are allowing that gear and it’s infusions to be used in WvW and other dungeons. This creates a situation where everyone is going to focus on FotM, on top of that they segmented the population with the ridiculous difficulty scale. Have you seen all the “LF1M – full exotics – lvl 5+” sort of shouts in LA? You think that sort of ridiculously divisive behavior gels with the overall design philosophy of the game? How is that in line with their goal of removing all points of pve contention? How is that good for the game? What about all the quotes about new content in 3mo, this being the ‘just the start of our gear progression’ etc? Just going to cross your fingers and hope that doesn’t happen? Because Anet listened so much to us about this change…. no wait, they just announced it ~10 days before it was going to go live and pushed it out ignoring the outcry. They didn’t even postpone the patch to explain what it was, they also left out things like the fact that they introduced new prefixes and that drop rates were higher for rare/exotic in FotM.

Old path to best in slot:
Karma
Gold
Dungeons
Pvp
Crafting/Gathering

New path to best in slot:
Fractals

No change in philosophy here.

Is Ascended the End of It?

Infusions are the mechanic they have stated that from this point in the games evolution will be the bases of all new content.

If you believe this, you’re fairly naive and unimaginative. How are infusion slots any different from rune/gem/sigil slots? Oh, they’re not….

I feel there is "RNG" for essence and I disagree with it

The drop rates are better when you’re not playing at the first tier (1-10)

Cool, so it only takes an estimated 7.5 hours of fractals to get out of the kitten drop rate? AWESOME!

You have to get to level 17 to get to EotN and realistically you’ll either need friends to play with or you’ll have to spend some time building out a Hero group for farming/running/missions.

I have 30 HoM points and it wasn’t worth the time + $$.

reposting w/ fixed wording – Arena net deleted this post once already. Hopefully this wording is more favorable.

tl:dr; This set of changes is a bad idea and will drive players away.

No End-game, all of the game is end-game:
Fractals is targeted at level 80s, while non-80’s can certainly join in and get scaled up anyone that’s run explorable dungeons frequently has probably had the not-so-fun experience of playing with undergeared and/or underleveled players. Everything becomes harder, takes longer, and some things are just impossible (AC Exp 3 for instance) without enough dmg or beef. Fractals has this same problem in spades, people need to be both geared and familiar with many other aspects of the game. There are a lot of gimmicky encounters and mechanics to leverage in the fractals and learning them on the fly can be painful for the person playing and those in the group. This is, of course, most noticeable in pugs. This also appears to introduce a requirement to get to 80 and then get exotics before you can join your friends. Either because they’ve out-leveled you, you’re on an alt, or you’re new to the game. That sucks, on all counts. Exp’s were hard w/o geared 80s, but my guild still happily ran them with low level characters. It was normal to find us pvp’ing with a group of mixed 20-80’s and the same was true for our PvE. People would bring alts or try new specs or different gear. That doesn’t seem possible in the fractals as they are now.

No grind
Ascended gear is usable in WvW, can be infused, and the requires grindy fractals to acquire. This is a harsh deviation from the previous model of easily crafted/bought/token acquired exotics where grinding was only present to acquire a specific look. This isn’t what we were looking for in GW2, we loved the existing model and were happily repeating dungeons for tokes to build specific looks. We had evenings where we stood around in LA linking gear and commenting on cosmetic combinations. This grind isn’t what was pitched to us, we were told Legendaries would be cosmetic updates, gear wasn’t going to be hard to get, NO GRIND! Then this patch came out… and it appears to be nothing but grind and full of non-cosmetic updates. I was happily leveling my 5th character (with plans to play all 8 classes to max!) and had kited out the 3 of the previous 4 with rare MF suits and spec-specific Exotic suits. The amount of time it appears to take to get ascended gear means that if I want to have equal footing in small group pvp (the kind I like, I don’t zerg or siege) I’m going to have to commit to both a spec and a single character. I can’t be the happy-go-lucky alt-aholic that I am now without sacrificing some statistics. That’s a shame and really ruins the game for me.

Overall problem is longer term
While I’m sure that 3 items aren’t going to represent a large difference in PvP, I also anticipate the next patch adding 3 more ascended pieces. It appears that if I’m hyper focused on pve I can get 3 pieces of ascended gear for one character focused on one spec by then. So I’m essentially forced to lock in to a spec and a character to ‘keep up’ in wvw. This isn’t something I’m interested in. I’m sure you’ve all see the quote from Linsey about this being the start of the gear progression and the promises of “no new gear in the next 3 months” both of which point strongly to a full suit of ascended in the works. There’s also the comments about ‘bridging the gap’ to lessen the jump from Exotic to Legendary. “Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two”. This statement implies a higher tier than ascended of Legendary. The current ‘jump’ in power from Exotic to Legendary is 0. As of the patch, it became an actual stat gain, but Ascended is certainly not ‘in between’ the Exotic and Legendary tier as Ascended = Legendary for stats right now. Reading between the lines a little this seems to point toward an upcoming bump, again, to Legendary stats. I’m guessing we’ll eventually see Legendary armor available as well. Not something we’re interested in, if we wanted vertical progression and gear that was time consuming to acquire, we’d still be playing WoW with it’s 8 years of expansions and 10+ years of development.

+1, raising the stat cap is a doomed endeavor. Look at the model dark age used, you can have a lot of new gear and variety in a system with hard caps and un-changing levels/stats.

Remove skill tiers

Skill tiering turned something that was fun in beta (Oh neat, an ability, let’s try it!) into a grind in release. I feel compelled to go rapidly churn out challenge points and levels to get the T3 skills I want unlocked.

I’d like to suggest that it’s reverted to a no-tier system as I think it was much more entertaining. The ability to experiment if you were new with anything or to b-line for the abilities you want if you aren’t new was much more fun. As it stands now, on all of my characters so far, the first 20 points have felt more like some crappy homework than some fun introduction to skills. I feel like I’m ‘wasting’ points just to get to the abilities I want in T1/T2. I begrudgingly click my T1 and T2 skills, I’ve stopped even reading them (on character #5 now) and just click through them to get it over with.

Please bring back a non-tiered system for character skills.

I’m sure it will be lost among the deluge, but I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents here. My guildmates and I are keeping a close watch on this new gear tier. It certainly seems to be the start of the stereotypical gear treadmill.

If that’s the way things play out, we’ll be moving on to other games, we have our fingers crossed and are hoping this doesn’t become a gear-progression game. That was the #1 appeal for many of us, no gear grind, at all. Ding 80, spend a moderate amount on gear, done. Enjoy WvW.

ANet – please do not advance character statistics beyond the current exotics. Please.
