Thanks for uploading it so fast!
Like others have said, there will always be people who can’t make it to these things.
As for me, I just woke up a couple minutes ago and didn’t realize there was a large-ish patch to download, so if there’s a cinematic in a minute I’m not going to see it until it ends up on YouTube or something. |D Ah well.
The main page looks fine now in Chrome
I’m having the same problem in Chrome, and clearing my cache didn’t help. It pretty much looks like Lil Puppy’s screenshots above.
Falling deaths don’t break armor.
This is just silly, my group was doing speed runs of the dungeon after the second or third run. If the jumps are killing you, you either didn’t wait for your health to regain before jumping again, or you missed a closer rock to jump to, thus avoiding greater fall damage.
Most of my long-distance friends and family live in the areas affected by Sandy, and even for the people I don’t know, I have a great deal of sympathy for those affected.
But all of the work that goes into these events takes a lot of time, and time is money for developers. It’s not that easy to just say, “Hey, why don’t you just make it so doing any part of the Halloween event gets you the achievement?”, or “You should extend the event until we all have power again for the long-term.”
The latter specifically makes me wonder, what if they did extend the event for, say, three days, or a week, but your city didn’t have your power restored by that time? You can’t give a definite answer on when everyone would have power again, and you can’t expect ANet to keep Halloween events going well into November. They can’t reasonably accommodate everyone, I really feel that it’s asking too much.
It probably sounds harsh, but would it be so bad to just let it go? Stuff happens in life, and maybe you can’t do this particular event right now. Heck, almost every year tornadoes sweep through the mid/southern U.S., and I’ve never heard of people asking for events to be extended because of them.
I don’t want the achievement to be altered, because it takes away the actual feeling of achievement. I didn’t do everything the achievement called for, therefore I shouldn’t get it. And if I couldn’t do everything the achievement called for, then I definitely shouldn’t get it. That’s how achievements should work, in my opinion. An achievement isn’t that important that you have to accuse the developers of whatever you can to force them into changing their policies for you (“you” referring to no one in particular).
I understand why people are frustrated, but ANet gave their answer already, and they’re already pushing on with the development of new content. Maybe you can do it again next year, but for now, look on the bright side, we’re going to have even more new stuff to do in a couple weeks.
Memoirs of Madness
I thought it was a fun way to start the event. I still think that the initial start of the event was well-explained (I know some people weren’t clued-in by the pumpkin icon and specific instructions), but I did have to Google the locations outside of Lion’s Arch.
The Clocktower
Loved all 8 hours of it, and I had a blast sharing the experience with the overflow groups I ran the course with. I believe I finished it at 4AM, convincing myself that I’d have a lot of trouble sleeping that night and doing my midterms the next day if I didn’t get that puzzle out of the way and off of my mind. The sense of relief jumping through the clock face was ridiculous, haha.
Reaper’s Rumble
Didn’t try it for long, I spent those 5 minutes being very confused.
Lunatic Inquisition
I had a blast initially, but I’m soured to it at the moment. The last time I played, my teammate felt it necessary to identify me by name and as an idiot in map chat. I said “No need to name call”, and he said “No need to ruin other people’s fun”. I left, saying that he should take his own advice and that it wasn’t necessary to call me out to the whole map, and left it at that. Digression aside, it’s still a very fun game.
Labyrinth
I leveled up a few times (61 to 66, I think) just running around and farming in here. I enjoy jumping in here when I have nothing else to do, simply for some quick salvage materials and experience.
Mad King Dungeon
I ran it several times after personally witnessing the cutscene, it was great. It’s very accessible to lower-level characters, which I like very much, and I usually added to my “LFG” messages that you don’t have to be level 80. Tended to get a lot of whispers for that. It was also my first dungeon (!) (yes, I did say earlier that I’m almost level 70), and I liked the whole format of the mobs, sequential boss fights, jumping to lower levels, etc. Plus it was a fun moment at the end when we got the initial rewards, went “lolwut”, then discovered that there was a chest a little further down. I’ve gotten a couple exotics from those 7-8 runs.
Overall
I didn’t even cover everything (much less completed the content I missed), and I’m amazed at how BIG this event was. There were so many things to do, and it was accessible to all kinds of players. I hadn’t been playing much before this holiday update, and it totally renewed my interest in getting my main to level 80. I can’t wait for future updates.
Next time I play that’s definitely going to be a “cannot unhear” thing…
May I suggest, though I’m sure it’s been considered, setting and activation time for the event. Then checking each player as they enter lion’s arch. If they have experienced the event they go to normal lion’s arch. If they have not, they are moved to a group instance with a batch of players that have also not experienced the event. (Kind of like the clock tower group instance.)
That’s not a bad idea! I played a game once where a special one-time cutscene played upon character log-in. No one knows what this upcoming event is exactly, but handling it in this manner in the future wouldn’t be a bad solution.
And Selluna:
I don’t know what percentage of GW2’s playerbase is from Australia/Asia (or any other region for that matter), I’m just saying that I trust in ANet’s decision that the majority-majority is being covered at the time they chose. I (and ANet for that matter) could be wrong on that, and it seems logical to me that they’d pick a time that the majority-majority is available. The large amount of time it takes to code these things equals an equally large amount of money, and I doubt they would waste either of these resources on an event that most people couldn’t see. I’ll back out of this line of conversation simply because no one knows enough to give a definite approximation of how many people exactly will not attend this event, and from which regions.

considering it was widely acknowledged that wvwvw is a 24/7 thing from anet, i’m just surprised they’d script an event that deliberately excludes a large portion of their gaming population. it seeds only bitterness and strengthens the whole divisiveness we’ve seen thanks to wvwvw.
I guess no one read my post in this thread? :/
It’s not that the foreign players are insignificant in general, but I think people might be mistaken thinking that ANet is “deliberately excluding” the majority from attending this event when it’s just the opposite. They want to do this once, and for that they assessed what time the majority of the playerbase can attend. Not everyone is going to be happy with this, obviously, but they did what they could for the majority. Why in the world would ANet spend time and money scripting an event that most of the playerbase wouldn’t see?
I support this idea completely, but I wouldn’t make any items exclusive to completing these particular JPs.
Edit: Wow, we both posted about the same thing at around the same time!
One strategy I found to help with not being able to see is going a different way at this particular point in the puzzle. I spent hours doing this over and over again, and very, very rarely did I ever see anyone going the route I took (pink) over this common route (white).
It’s not that much of a help as a whole, but this point is typically where most players start falling off.
XiaMae… pretty sure you are wrong. The timer is actually variable, because it follows the progress of the person in front from what i can tell, and the puzzle resets when the last one falls. I’ve timed it more than once, it rarely runs for the exact same amount of time. And when I know I am the last one to fall, it always immediately starts a new round as soon as I get back to the gate.
That’s probably correct then. I’ve also seen the timer jump at some points (as players fail in bunches?), and my game doesn’t lag very much at all.
Another thing is the waiting times. What’s the reasoning behind that? Why not just let everyone try as many times as they want rather than force them to wait for about three times the time it took them to fail
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the timer reflects the length of time it should take to finish the puzzle. If you fail near the end, the puzzle should reset almost immediately upon reentering the “lobby” room.
People are welcome to think that the jumping puzzle wasn’t fun, etc., and I actually understand how problematic it is to have it be part of an achievement that won’t be available for much longer. This is because it took me 8 hours to finish the puzzle, and I know many other players needed around that much time to do it. Some of us aren’t so fortunate to have that much free time to use on a jumping puzzle.
However, I’m all for having more jumping puzzles of this variety in the future, not necessarily just for holidays. It was a blast, and I loved the sense of relief after I finally got to the end and got my reward. Even when I was having trouble, it was fun bonding with groups over how close we got, or sharing tips, etc.
Just wanted to offer a tip because I was on the verge of asking for it (and I recently beat the puzzle).
That little square block right in front of an upward-slanted beam (before the big jump down)? If you’re having trouble getting up onto the beam, try jumping carefully from the highest corner of the block. I find that it works better than running jumps.
It’s pretty much impossible to satisfy everyone due to ANet wanting this event to only happen once. But as they said, the time they chose satisfies the “highest possible percentage” of the active playerbase, and this is generally a peak time. They seem confident that “most” players will be able to make it, which I have to assume is in the thousands or tens of thousands (at least), compared to the ~50 people who are vocal about their discontent.
It’s a shame (and I say this with absolutely no sarcasm) that many people won’t be able to make it due to schedules, the hurricane, timezones, etc., but the fact is that most will be able to. Even if they did change the time, or make it occur more than once, there are still going to be people who aren’t able to make it for one reason or another. You just can’t satisfy everyone.
I’m so happy, I finally got to the end. Human Elementalist, took me about 8 hours over the course of two days. Now I can do my midterms without any distractions.
/finger muscles twitch, wipes away a tear
It’s in a little over 8 hours. Check the thread “Special Event Timing”.

I agree, reviving at the nearest waypoint should be free.
It would encourage people to try more things, and not feel like they have to ‘avoid’ the death penalty by being safe.
This and what the person above me said.
Me neither. ;_; Same boat, lol. Yes, being faster doesn’t mean you’re any better at completing the jumping puzzle. Dx
I agree, I was silently annoyed that some players would continuously say “charr die”, etc., before EVERY round, and I’m surprised those Charrs and Norns would always stay quiet. It’s just rude.
We Charr and Norn have thick skins.
Haha, indeed. xD
I wouldn’t think so. It doesn’t give you an advantage over anyone else beyond getting to the wall explosion platform first.

Off-topic somewhat, but I just wanted to wish everyone affected by the hurricane a safe week. It’s not funny to joke about any threat to life and property, especially, as someone said, when it’s in an area that isn’t used to hurricane activity.
No I do not like it, as someone who is over the age of 40 I do not enjoy spastic button spamming geared to the attention spam of a 18 year old. If you had a puzzle that required thought and not mindless reflex yes I might enjoy it.
I’m not sure what you’re trying to say. Are you saying that an 18 year old has a better attention span than a 40+ year old? Because I’m 21, and this event is ruining my progress on my midterms exams/homework this week. And I guess this is just a matter of opinion, but I feel that this jumping puzzle takes a lot of strategy and thought, I feel that if you’re doing any “spastic button spamming”, you’re probably failing the puzzle often. The jumps need to be careful and deliberate.
Edit: That being said, I think these Halloween events have been a blast so far, and I haven’t even done half of the activities yet.
All the people who are saying it is fine do so because they are able to ignore the fact others are there an photographic memorize the whole process so they could do it blind folded.
I haven’t done it yet, and I would like the event much, much less if I had to do this over and over again by myself.
Also, “investing money” and spreading the word, etc. doesn’t make you any more deserving than the rest of us.
Neither of these workarounds have worked for me.
I think there’s some kind of glitch with merging topics. :|
What the heck are you talking about?
I’ve never had a problem with people summoning things, and I’ve gotten disconnected half a dozen times and ended up in different groups of people. If one person doing that is a problem, then relog into a different shard. Then you can make it far enough that if you fail, you have about 5 seconds to breathe/take a sip of water before it restarts.
In my opinion, I think having others to fail with makes it a lot more fun, and it helps with the patience factor. It’s great that this event has more of a social aspect to it than most PvE activities.
Do we really need to go into high school “Oh honey, it’s cute that you think you’re right” condescension?
I spent 4 hours trying to do it, kept making dumb mistakes right at the end, and I don’t think the difficulty should be changed at all. Not everyone is going to be happy, and every time I get disconnected and sent to another shard, someone in that group winds up completing the puzzle. It’s possible, you just need to keep trying. I personally think that its difficulty makes it fun. Some won’t agree. What makes their or my view on it more valid?
Also, speed buffs don’t always make it easier. It’s easier to overshoot jumps. This is coming from an Air attunement Elementalist.
Edit: Neglected to mention that I still haven’t succeeded, and IMO I don’t think the event needs to be tweaked.

That’s a really stupid thing to say. We eat candy corn in my house here every year. You should try the flavored candy corn. There’s caramel apple, caramel, and raspberry to name a few. It isn’t all orange, yellow, and white you know.
Caramel apple wax is still wax.
I laughed. I tried candy corn in kindergarten, never ate it ever again. :P
I think gaming communities have gotten to a point where they think if they complain loudly enough and often enough, the companies/developers will cater to their every whim. It’s happened to another game just recently (it rhymes with “president weevil mix”, in case you’re wondering), and I don’t think that kind of behavior makes any game better.
I have suddenly realized how many people on this game have impulse buying problems and small obsessions with gambling
I would say “on this forum”. I still believe it’s a vocal minority who are so dissatisfied with their own actions that they have to create a whirlwind of negativity in the hopes that it would browbeat ANet into giving out (more) compensation.
Just think, there’s still three Acts left, and all of this backlash is just from the first one.
(Edited to clarify that I’m on the side of people who think you’re responsible for the money you willingly spent of your own accord. ANet stated there was a chance, and you gambled. That’s your fault, and it’s immoral to buy an item (a key), use said item (on a chest), then threaten/attempt to get a refund on an item you already used just because you didn’t like the outcome.)

This is gambling, the rating on this game says gambling on it, they have to give odds in gambling in Australia by law.
I’d like some proof of that. I’ve been looking it up, and I found nothing to suggest that they have to give the odds.
I’m in the minority I guess, I know from other games that these things have slim odds, but I’d try some keys in the future if there was something I wanted (like armor skins, not town outfits).
Uh, wow. There sure seem to be a lot of jerks on the forums. Glad my server seems to have nice people. Proof RPers are awesome people.
Just the vocal minority, that’s all.
I find the idea of posting the odds problematic. If they said it was 1/10, people would buy 10 keys and be upset when they still don’t win. It’s like flipping a coin; 50% chance of getting heads or tails, but it’s still possible to get one or the other twice in a row.
ive been wondering if someone can take legal actions against Anet, if you se the patch notes it was never stated as a RARE chance, in fact il look for it.

just saying.
I must have retyped this response a dozen times. But why can’t “chance” mean “rare chance” again? “Chance” can imply anything between .01-99.9%. They never said “rare chance”, but they never said “good chance” either.
I have mixed feelings on this issue, honestly. I think many of us are very familiar with holiday-themed “chance boxes”, and either spend money on them with no high expectation of receiving rare items, or do not spend money on them, knowing that the chances are very slim.
But for those who are not familiar with these kinds of things, I can see why they would feel “robbed” in a sense, knowing they essentially spent money on regular BLC rewards or uncommon Halloween crafting items, i.e., spent money on something they normally wouldn’t.
For those who knew the odds, didn’t get anything, and are using the “I gave you a lot of money” argument, yes, I would call that entitlement. For those who honestly didn’t know and feel deceived, I would not call that entitlement. It’s entirely possible that ANet just assumed everyone was familiar with the odds of chance boxes from playing other MMOs.
The one’s that don’t know aren’t completely innocent either. They could have used discretion and waited until other people figured out the drop rates. Or they could have bought only a handful of keys to test it. I find it hard to believe that someone would go out and buy 200 keys and not know the odds are low. I guess its possible that they could have bought the keys in sets of 5 but I think I would have caught on well before 200.
But again, I think Anet should have been more precise on their wording. “Chance” is a bit vague.
Believe me, I’m trying my best to be unbiased and give some of the dissatisfied people the benefit of the doubt. A big part of me wants to say “Haven’t any of you played an MMO before?” because this type of grab-bag thing isn’t uncommon in the least. Every MMO I’ve ever played has had something like this, with similar odds.

It sounds like you’re not familiar with the well-known “gachapon” feature that’s in a lot of MMO cash shops. Just like regular Black Lion Chests, the “Halloween edition” doesn’t guarantee rare items, they just added new ones to the mix.
Thank goodness! My only regret in making my character was not paying attention to the height slider (and thus, being very very very short compared to everyone else).
Honestly, I only Google’d two things:
1) To learn that the first book was “bugged” (the ghost wouldn’t spawn at the time I was trying to do it, either because too many people were in the spot or were trying to activate it at the same time), and I didn’t want to do them out of order, so I went to collect candy corn for a while. I’m really shocked so many people were asking where to get candy corn.
2) The last four book locations, because I’m lazy. I figured out the second one right away, but I blanked out on the others.
I think the only hint needed would have been some kind of mail saying “OOooooOOo, gooOOoo to Lion’s AaaaAAarch”, that’s about it. Like others have said, the big pumpkin head icon would have been all you needed, and the instructions were clear on getting the first book.
