Only for gold selling (and maybe spamming) reports though. I can see other situations where I would want to report someone but not necessarily block them.

You’re right I can see instances where reporting someone for something else wouldn’t necessarily want them on your ignore list. I would consider Verbal Abuse too, but botting may not be a good idea if the botter is from a hijacked account or if the person with an inappropriate name is actually a decent person you’d want to play and communicate with.

Time for a Lionguard Regime Change *spoilers*

It’s time for a change in the Lionguard. Lion’s Arch has stood for over 200 years and has nearly fallen twice in the last three months because of their arrogance. First with the breach of Lion’s Arch by undead scouts and the subsequent invasion of Claw Island by Zhaitan’s forces and now the attack by the Karka.

I understand the Lionguard can’t prepare for impending invasion every time some lunatic starts crying about the end of the world, but in both instances the Lionguard have ignored warnings of impending attacks by experts in the field. These attacks have resulted not only in the loss of many lives, but also putting the city and the entirety of Tyria at risk.

We can’t let this stand. We can’t allow the men, women and children of Lion’s Arch run the risk of death, or worse, because of the Lionguard’s dereliction of duty.

Here’s an idea, when I report someone for gold selling, or anyone in general, can we get them automatically added to the block list. I get tired of having to report and block someone in two separate actions when reporting gold sellers in Lion’s Arch.

Why is there not a PvP Server?

One of the major issues with open-world PvP is it would effectively break the dynamic event system. If you split the pvp down race lines none of the DE’s would ever get done. If you split it down the middle with some sort of arbitrary factions the smaller events would probably get finished, but once you ran into large popular DE’s like the world bosses they wouldn’t get done because you’re fighting both the dragon and the enemy faction. Even worse, by destroying the event system you make dungeons like CoF, CoE and Arah almost permanently inaccessible. The level of cooperation needed for DE’s is not conducive to open-world PvP unless they did it only in certain zones, but then we already have that in the form of WvW

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The reason there are not dual professions in GW2 is balance in PvP. In GW1 you not only ended with a metric kitten ton of skills which made balancing nightmare in itself, but any character could pick from 2 professions worth. The result with dual-professions was you would have OP builds relying on skills from the secondary profession, but if you nerfed those top balance the build it could really underpower skills for people who chose that class for their primary.

An example was touch rangers (Ranger/Necro). With their stat that made skills recharge faster they could run up to an opposing player and spam touches and decimate them very quickly, but the build couldn’t be nerfed without touch skills becoming almost useless for necros.

By having a finite set of skills mixed with a talent tree and no secondary profession it makes PvP balance much easier while also giving players a level of customizability.

For the love of god, someone close this thread.

Agreed.

Yep, let’s close down this thread to shut up the dissendants, they’re not letting me pretend the game is perfect and that everyone loves it and is happy

It’s not that there are dissidents, it’s that the thread has apparently devolved into not only comparing a game to communism, but bickering about who better understands what a communism is.

And just to throw a curveball in, the textbook definition of a communism is a government who controls all the methods of production. If the company that develops an MMO are the ones who govern it then technically all MMO’s are communist

What I’ve seen over the years is that MMORPG’s are rare in the fact that it’s the only genre of games where people that hate a particular game, instead of quitting and moving on to something else, will continue to put time and money into it them constantly complain about it.

Now there are some things that are understandable to complain about like bugs or primary functionality being broken, for example, but in every MMO I’ve played since Everquest you will get people who will do nothing but get on the forums and complain about how they hate some major aspect that would drastic changes all the way up to major redesigns of the game, but instead of quitting and looking for a game more suited to their taste they pay for it, play it and complain about it.

GW2, misunderstood game

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Zuggy.4501

But we can’t blame marketing either. You can’t say “MMO” and not think of the 900lb gorilla. And you can’t risk saying “is nothing at all like what you expect” because so many people make purchase decisions on precedent and reference. You can only hope people who say they want something different actually want something different and not just “my favorite WoW class but not-kittened”

This is my sentiment as well. I love GW2 because it’s almost exactly what I’ve been looking for in an MMO for years. I also played a ton of GW1 and loved it as well.

To expand on your point of of creating an MMO that’s different and people’s expectations of different, I want to add that I think part of the issue is the marketing of MMO’s that claim to be different. Since to explosion of WoW we’ve heard almost every big MMO say that they’re something “different” and when it comes down to it things are pretty much the same except for one or two aspects. Maybe it’s more cutscenes and voice acting for the story, maybe it’s tweaks to the combat system, maybe it’s how they handle the talent tree, but at the end of the day 90% of how the game is played is exactly like WoW. Many people who are disillusioned by GW2 were expecting that outcome, the WoW structure with something minor changed.

One of the huge complaints I see is the lack of endgame progression and players needing to have a carrot on a stick to strive for. What Anet seems to be doing, because they did this in GW1, is having a low mark for gear that will get you through all the content and then have better looking gear for those who want to strive for it. This changes the focus from grinding for gear with better stats to the content itself.

Now I don’t personally like the endgame progression style of play. I played WoW for awhile and it was disheartening spending a lot of time slogging through content that many times wasn’t very compelling just to hit the level cap and then not being able to find a raiding guild willing to go back to the earlier raids so I could get gear to do the raids they were on. I essentially quit because I was locked out of content because I couldn’t get that gear, but that’s personal preference. There are obviously a lot of people who enjoy that style of play or WoW wouldn’t be as popular as it is.

And endgame progression isn’t the only example, but it speaks clearly to the point that GW2 isn’t the MMO for everyone. I think it’ll be quite successful, but I don’t think it’s going to be a “WoW-killer.” It will fill a niche of people looking for a departure from the standard MMO fair without having to go as extreme as something like Eve Online.

And you will get people who will come to the forums complaining about how the game is kitten because it’s not like every other MMO in a specific aspect that they love. In fact you will probably see many more complaints on the forums because the people enjoying the game are the ones playing it while those who aren’t enjoying it are the ones who, for one reason or another, feel ripped off and want to vent that fact. Those complaints will also come in many shapes from “I would enjoy this game better if you did X” to “I’m quitting and telling everyone I know this game is kitten because it doesn’t do X,Y and Z.” The complainers on the forums is why I can’t stand visiting most MMO forums except for maybe once or twice a week.

Another view that I don’t think anyone has covered (although I will admit I didn’t read all the responses) is players have an incentive to take up multiple weapon crafting professions. For example casters would find use in going both weaponsmithing and artificing.

Either I’m missing something or you’re being hyperbolic. I don’t see how ANet trying to monetize a product is being evil, especially since it’s not like they’re charging a monthly fee for most players. If you don’t like the idea of rented servers, that’s fine that’s your opinion, I just wouldn’t go so far as to say monetizing special features for those who want them to “be evil.”

I actually don’t see renting servers to be that big of a problem. I find it similar to how Valve runs Team Fortress 2 servers. They have free servers anyone can play on and if you want to pay for a private server for more personalized play with just your guild or welcome guests you can have that too. It’s not just TF2 either it’s the entirety of the business model for every online FPS with dedicated server support ever.

Being on Maguuma what’s driving me insane isn’t the night capping or the superior tactics (like FA guilds patrolling roads to stomp black ops and stragglers) it’s the exploiters and botters. When people are flying into our keeps or garrison to steal the orb or we have a 15 minute queue to find that there are 30 botters farming krait it becomes a serious pain in the kitten.

EDIT: I do want to add if anyone from our server is exploiting they should be banned too. I don’t mind losing to a superior force, I just hate losing to cheaters.

Apparently nobody in here pays attention.

First the devs said they will be implementing a token system similar to GW1 items for finishing Arah and it will be retroactive. They said it probably won’t happen until at least the 10/28 update.

As far as the difficulty of Arah, they retuned it and fixed bugs with it in the last update.

For me and my taste I find the armor designs to either be amazing or awful, there are very few designs I just feel meh about. For example I absolutely love the Asura T1 (the skin I’ve been using since I bought it at 43) and T3 cloth armors. I also love the sort of Sci-Fi Nazi feel of the Sorrow’s Embrace cloth set. Takes me back to the Wolfenstein series. Conversely I hate the look of the Arah cloth armor, the Asura T2 cloth armor and my cloth Traveler’s set looks like something out of Saturday Night Fever, bell bottoms and all.

Things you miss and want back from GW1

I miss Elite Skills as they were in GW1. Elites in GW2 just feel like stronger normal skills with longer cooldowns, some of them actually are (Ele’s elite elemental vs the normal lesser elemental). I miss Elites being build defining. I miss looking at an elite and thinking “that looks awesome, what other skills would go with it.”

I also miss SS bomb. It’s bad enough punishing a player for doing what they’re supposed to, it’s even worse when you punish a whole team when one player is doing what they’re supposed to. I can also imagine just how OP an SS bomb would be in WvW. Sure the system may only let AoE’s hit 5 players, but you get 3 SS bombers and you could easily wipe a 30 man zerg.

For those who don’t know what I’m referring to it was a necro/mesmer using Spiteful Spirit as the elite and then Arcane Echo as one of the skills. SS was a hex that would damage the target and nearby enemies whenever they attacked or used a skill. Arcane Echo would copy the next spell cast in the next 30 seconds so you could get 2 SS skills on your bar then spread it around in large groups and watch them fall. You would also throw other necro or mesmer skills on that would punish a player for completing normal actions.

I think the combat in this game feels very stale.

Zuggy.4501

To this day, I just don’t understand why they didn’t just go with the same skill system they used in GW1.

I think the reason why was balance issues in PvP, especially where a skill or set of skills from the secondary profession ended up being OP, but then hurt players who played that profession as their primary. Things like IWAY (Warrior/Ranger), Touch Rangers (Ranger/Necro), Fast Cast Eles (Mesmer/Ele), Bunny Thumpers (Ranger/Warrior) all became very difficult, and eventually impossible, to balance without crippling the skills or certain builds for primary professions.

This problem got so bad ANet had to split what certain skills did between PvE and PvP which created its own barrier of entry when crossing over from PvE to PvP or vise versa because how a skill behaved in one aspect of the game could’ve behaved completely different in the other.

Also keep in mind that in the end, yes GW1 has over 1,000 skills, but many of those are direct copies of skills from previous expansions to give a base set of skills for people who didn’t buy all the expansions. On top of that you have some of those skills which intentionally nerfed into uselessness in the name of balance, like all the smite skills that made dual smites an awesome way for monks to completely faceroll.

The way I see the GW2 system it provides a large selection of customizability while still being able to keep the balancing issues manageable and not having to confuse players by splitting how a skill works between PvE and PvP. It also greatly reduces a player’s required knowledge base to be useful let alone competitive in PvE and PvP.

I liked GW1’s Collectable Card Game style system, but it ends up being completely unsustainable for both the players and the developers.

Are MMO players trained to play for progression...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Zuggy.4501

If there was no gear progression already in guild wars 2 why is there dungeon currencies. If people are playing for fun and not making their players more powerful then arenanet should scrap the currency. But oh wait………… I guess they care more for the gear progression kittens.

This point keeps coming up. The difference between GW2’s gear progression and say WoW’s gear progression is GW2’s is mostly cosmetic. There are slightly better stats on legendaries, but not like WoW where it’s not uncommon for one of the first bosses in a new raid to be a gear check. In WoW you’ll go into a raid and one of the first bosses will have some sort of unavoidable mechanic where if some random player dies before the raid can rescue them then you probably need to go grind dungeons or the previous raid some more to get the gear.

In GW2, much like in GW1, you have really awesome gear designs if you want to grind for the look of the armor, but they aren’t required to experience all the content. With WoW gear is the one and only means to an end, where as with GW2 gear is a possible extended end if one wants to go for it with the actual end being the end of your personal story and having completed the story dungeons.

First off the dungeon rewards won’t be broke forever, unless your definition of broken is no longer being able to exploit your way through a dungeon for quick rewards.

I’d say go through and complete the zones you haven’t completed, you’ll need the skill points for some of the high-end rewards and you’ll get mats along the way to level your crafting, and you’ll need your crafting skills up to 400 to make your legendary weapons. Legendaries are going to be a grind fest in and of themselves because of all the components. Even the Mystic Forge Exotics require a crafting skill at 400 to make. They require 50 mystic coins, and Eldrich Scroll (costs 50 skill points) and 5 each of the 400 component A and B (for example the Mystic Scepter requires 5 ancient scepter cores and 5 ancient scepter rods.)

EDIT: There’s also WvW, but that can be a gold sink especially if your server isn’t very active and you die a lot since your armor does take damage when you die in WvW.

Frankly I would like the map to show blips for everyone from your server. It gets impossible to try and think tactically if you can’t see where your team is. Want to be on the offensive with the zerg? You can see where the battles are but can’t differentiate between the zerg in an epic battle or a small roam getting stomped. Want to help defend? You don’t know where there are people defending and it’s not worth trying to find out when the maps are like Battlefield 2 when some motherkittens take all the APC’s with no one in them at the start of a match, you run 10 minutes to realize that you’ve either wasted your time or get stomped in 30 seconds.

For me it was doing TA Story (don’t worry no spoilers)

I was with a decent (playing wise) group of players which consisted of 1 guildie and 3 PUGS. Right before the last boss we decided to take a 5 minute break. As we start to slowly trickle back we were chatting and we all ended up sitting there for about 15 minutes just shooting the breeze about our real lives, previous MMO’s we play and other games we enjoy, our jobs, whatever. Finally we realized we were all back and get ready to roll.

Just as we pull a mob one of the guys DC’s. We wait for him and he doesn’t come back so we get a 5th and finish the dungeon.

The next day my guildie and I get a message from the guy who DC’d apologizing profusely because his internet died and apparently he had to make a service call. Since then we’ve played together some more and he’s now in our guild.

The point is there are some really fun and awesome people in the game.
