The clone of mesmer always appears first. It’s easy to spot. Also, since I main thief, a mesmer can’t clone themselves if they can’t target you, making an easy stomp.

I just played a ton of PvP and I’m getting the mesmer counter down well with thieves, anyways. Yesterday I was in a 3v3 match, enemy team all mesmers my team 2 thieves and a ranger. I successfully 1v2’d two mesmers on a node, all it took was about 3 cluster bombs and a not glass cannon build (I had 20k hp, and numerous ways to regen it) I suppose if the mesmers were not illusion builds it woulda been harder, but against that particular playstyle it only took a few AoE spells.

obtuse, i compared shadow rejuvenation and shadow protector…

with 300 healing power, shadow protector healed for 168 5×.
with 300 healing power, shadow rejuvenation healed for 323 5×. (this was a 4 second stealth, any longer and it would have healed for even more ticks than regeneration did. although, regeneration will scale very slightly with boon duration)

anyways, shadow rejuvenation is nearly 2x stronger than shadow protector… as it should be since it’s a top tier trait.

i just did a smallish amount of testing on this. with no sigils, 4% chance to crit over 200 strikes with a sword, i got 5% crits. this is not terribly far from the 4% im supposed to get, so im gonna assume that the statistic provided by the game was correct.

i then went to two weapons that both had 5% crit runes in them for an expected +10% chance to crit, with the 4% base for a total of 14% to crit. over 200 strikes, i got 10.5% crits. now, im not sure if I’d say that BOTH of the accuracy sigils made a difference here, as I’d expect that it’d be closer to 14% to crit if both did.. but there is at least a large improvement (of at least 5%) compared to the no sigil test.

TLDR: Over a small sample size of 200 hits, a no-sigil sword that was supposed to have 4% to crit got 5% crits. Over another small sample size of 200 hits, dual-wielded weapons which both had +5% chance to crit sigils in them supposedly having 14% to crit got 10.5% crits.

i would say that at least having one of them works. there’s obvious room for a large margin of error over a sample size of 200, but whatever.

In sPvP the rewards are worthless, they afford you zero advantage at all. In WvW, you want an advantage. you are trying to mix two systems that are strictly different, and were created to be so. Stop it.

I have seen more than a few shortbow thieves in PvP and they never do well. they don’t really do any damage.. the one time they are effective is vs rangers when their trick shot gets to bounce between the ranger and it’s pet for 2x damage on ranger.

I don’t think you’ve even used glory. You only get glory for sPvP, and glory doesn’t grant you any special gear anyways. Only looks, and bags. Even if you could use glory to buy WvW gear, it would mean nothing, because you’d have to sPvP to get glory.

All you are really asking for is an easy way to get the top gear in WvW.. WvW is already known to be severely imbalanced due to level/gear differences. If you don’t want that imbalance to exist, go to sPvP, If you want to participate in WvW competitively, then start farming.

That’s the way it is. WvW is about gear and levels, so yes, you will have to grind to be good at it.

Once you start mixing that in, you make the players who did farm all their gear feel useless because other players got it with very little effort.

That would be a very difficult thing to implement and would upset a great many players.

Chakuna, that trait is aweful. By that point most builds already have 50% crit chance.

Freelancer, I don’t know. It wouldn’t be that hard to judge ingame if you equipped two of them and had 0 precision traits/gear on at all, as you’d only have a 4% or so to crit… 5% and 10% from two would be a very significant gain in crit chance.

WvW uses PvE gear for a reason – to appease the audience that enjoys both PvE and PvP, but want to use their accrued PvE assets in PvP, so that they have a sense of worth. Unfortunately, there is another crowd who believes that PvP should not be gear based at all, so they get PvP where gear is free and balanced for all.

Anet has appeased the two major PvP audiences, gear that makes a difference and gear that doesnt make a difference, and it’s fully intended to work that way.

I would say no. You don’t have any super great damage options, cluster bomb is slow/buggy.. the poison field doesnt do a ton of dmg, plus costs a lot of iniative and is easy to avoid, You have very little mobility with the 5 skill, which costs a ton, so you’re left to do the evading shot and dodges..

it just lacks reliable damage and constant mobility. I don’t think it’s viable as a “main” weapon at all, but it definitely has it’s uses and reasons to be a secondary set.

Can you not use the WvW gained karma / those tokens you get from it (I dont remember off top of my head) to buy gear in WvW? You can get gear from WvW… Spend your karma. Sell items that you pick up from kills. Spend your trophies.

I suppose, but if you look at the S/D build.. they really have no spammable initiative skills. I mean, you could spam them.. but they serve little purpose. The only S/D skill you might spam is Dancing Dagger. S/D is by no means an iniative intensive build, and it’s commonly better to not blow your iniative because then you’d lose the 10% dmg increase from critical strikes.

Actually.. that score means you know where the right spots and the right times are. believe it or not there is an art to accruing glory.If you are in Capricorn and defending the ruins, you are doing it wrong.

My pointwas : it does not mean anything regarding the class balance since that was one of the reaction to that screenshot. You could farm glory as a perma MOA with the right awarness and positionning.

Well, probably not as a Moa.. as you have no mobility and every skill you can use roots you..lulz.

mesmer, guardian, and thief all shine. warriors can shine, but not as much because they tend to only offer some burst and CC. Other than the first 3 classes, everyone else just seems kinda whatevers.

Those score don’t mean a thing since most of the time it just proves that you are at the right spot at the right time to pick points from kills you may or may not have done, or from point you may or may not have helped to capture.

Do you even get Glory for WvW? I’ve only WvW’d a couple times, but I dont recall getting glory for WvW. Why would you be able to use sPvP accrued currency for WvW gear, which uses PvE gear anyways? Wouldn’t that be a tad bit imbalanced?

Anyways, I don’t even buy the new sPvP skins with glory. I’m only going to use it to buy chests with the express purpose of getting 20-slot bags.

maybe when I’m Dragon, I’ll gather a skin set.

Soulcakeduck, you can’t add backstab and follow his ideology. if you backstab, you will get the ‘Revealed’ debuff and you will then not be able to chainstealth as he desires to do so.

The best thing I can suggest for you to do is add things that won’t affect your stealth, such as Caltrops and Ambush Trap.

Also, no, that’s not how revealed works. It only triggers if you attack while you are stealthed. If you just let it fade naturally, you don’t get the ‘Revealed’ effect.

I’m almost 100% positive that Shadow Protector IS NOT stronger than Shadow Rejuvenation. I’ll even double check when I get back home. but No, you don’t need the extra stealth on steal especially when you could acheive the exact same result by doing the precast CnD + Steal combo, except that that stealth is even longer.

Tell you what I’ll bookmark this thread if you want to impress in the slightest way put up some serious numbers using any other class besides a thief. It shouldn’t be hard if you’re actually any good tons of people have done it by rolling a thief for a few games so you should easily be able to go the other way. I’ll be eagerly waiting for your results.

I went through the hassle of filling out my build for one of the threads.. so might as well throw it out here.

It’s a highly durable, high healing, sustained damage build. It’s the build you would use if you wanted to figth with a guardian for 15 minutes, because the likelihood is that neither of you would ever die. Played properly this build loses to no class, simply just to better players.

how do you take hidden thief over shadow rejuvenation? Do you really need another 3 second stealth? Shadow rejuvenation gives you wayyyyy more healing. The shadow rejuvenation ticks are much stronger than a regeneration tick. By the way, that extra healing on stealth does work while you are downed, If you are ever about to be downed, toss your shadow refuge ontop of yourself and you’ll be stealthed while downed, healing incredibly fast. i’ve gotten myself up many, many times with this strategy.

It was hard to follow.
Anyways, what I do have to say about it is that your utilities are completely off. You’re not getting any real synergy with your Shadow Arts traits, and that’s where this build becomes beastly. The only signet you should consider is the 25% movespeed one, because short of using centaur runes there’s not many ways to keep your speed up. The two signets you have right now really don’t offer anything. you don’t need a shadowstep signet when you have sword 2, you don’t need a condition removal signet when you have sword 2 + stealths. If you put Blinding powder and Shadow Refuge in there you’d see wayyy more returns. Shadow Refuge with the Shadow arts traits as I ahve them make it an immense rescue skill, as you are now healing from Shadow Refuge’s pulses, from becoming stealthed by it, and from being stealthed, not to mention that it removes conditions every 3 seconds and it lasts for like 15 seconds the entire duration (the stealth, anyways). I don’t see any reason to not have shadow refuge in this build, and I’m not seeing the synergy between the signets you chose, other than that they’ll grant you might and some initiative… but that’s really not going to help you even close to as much as other utilities will.

the only reason i even use Signet of malice is because I like the gimmicky trick of using it with Dagger Storm, even though the stealth heal skill is far more reliable and gives a much bigger heal..

the build in that link couldn’t be more off from what I do. the utilities don’t make sense, you don’t take any healing traits in the healing line.. your weapons don’t facilitate condition removal or stunbreaks or anything.. the only stealth skills you even have are steal and CnD, which tend to be highly unreliable. I don’t know why you don’t have blinding powder or shadow refuge, as they are amazing utilities. you put a ton of points into trickery and I don’t see why, more condition damage and more stealing don’t add a meaningful difference. Critical strieks at 30 gives you way more damage, and shadow arts at 30 gives you way more sustainability, actually filling the hybrid role there. You invest a lot of utilities into stunbreaks.. while if you simply used a sword you’d ahve the best one ever.. and another condition removal ontop of it.

There’s nothing similar about our builds.

2. When a stealthed player get struck by any hit, there should be something to let the attacker realize he hit the stealthed guy. As it is now, you can only swing the air having no clue of there the enemy is going.

There are some ways to do so, but they are situational. for instance, I use Signet of Malice (heals when I hit people) and I can tell if I hit a stealthed unit. Of course, you also have to not be at full HP, otherwise the healing won’t show.

My build completly defies everything you just stated obtuse. Condition Damage? No removal? False. There’s a trait that makes stealth remove conditions. using SnD, that makes your 5 remove conditions, and your 2 already does. That’s two weapon skills that remove conditions. Your stealthing heal will auto-remove bleeding, poison, and burning.. and another condition after 3 secs with the trait. You have a trait that removes bleeding, poison, and burning every 45 secs when you go under 80% hp.. if you took the condition removal trait on stealth, you can make ALL of your utilities remove conditions..

You are just doing it wrong.

Useless without strong dmg? Whaaat? I kill people with the autoattack from my sword, That stuff does do dmg.I get 3-5k dmg per 3 hits on sword, depending on how many crits pop out and if the target is under 50% hp. That’s plenty enough damage to kill someone. Have you thought about other ways to make people die? This is a team game. On S/D, use your 2 to immobilize and 4 to cripple fleeing foes. That’s a ton of CC, considering you have no CD’s. CC’s secure kills.

Also, STOP USING BERSERKER’S AMULET!! If you want to not die everytime you are bursted, switch to a soldiers or knights amulet. Use only the berserker’s stone inside one of the aforementioned amulets. It let’s you actually survive a hundred blades frenzy burst.

I always LOL to myself at the poor soul who’s in Raid on the Capricorn at the ruins… Because no one ever goes there to try and take a point defended by a player and sharks. End of game comes, his score is 10 from capping 1 point. He might get a match win bonus of like 3? Big deal.

The problem is is that you are using only cookie cutter builds, OP.

My Critical Strikes/Shadow Arts S/D build is highly surviveable. I’m constantly 1v3’ing people and not dying. I’m not going to be able to kill 3 people, sure, but it’s very unlikely that I’d die because of my insanely durable build. It’s also got sustained damage from crit strikes (+10 when ini over 6 and + 20 when under 50% hp) and the sword autoattack is actually quite strong, albeit slow. The weakness debuff from sword auto 3 is nice as well. But sword 2 gives you THE BEST STUNBREAK IN THE GAME, as it is ALWAYS available, it’s cheap on initiative, and it moves you far from the fight, and it even clears up a condition.

It is insanely hard to be killed on my thief when you can stunbreak everything, and any stealth will heal you for 3k hp.

TLDR:

Stop using cookie cutter burst builds and start experimenting.

Dagins, that’s wrong (according to the scenario). If Daendur does not attack for the duration of his stealth and uses CnD immediately when the stealth fades, he’ll be back in stealth again.

That said, I don’t think it’s a very viable build because you simply can not do enough damage to kill someone when you have 1 condition ticking and 1 attack every 3-4 seconds. You’re going to have to add something else into that rotation.

That would be… Give allies regeneration for 5 seconds and gain regeneration while in stealth I believe.

yes, “give allies” also means yourself. You get the regeneration boon for 5 seconds, and then passive regeneration much like the warrior’s signet while you are stealthed.

On an interesting related note, Shadow Refuge gives you the revealed debuff if you move outside of its radius. Even if the refuge has already faded.

you can move outside of shadow refuge if you wait until there is only 5 seconds remaining on your stealth (this is traited stealth — might be less if you don’t have the +1 sec on stealth trait).

if it’s just two people in the map 1v1, it’s pretty much inevitable anyways. there’s 3 nodes and only 1 person on each team. to win that it’s usually either whom cam run to each node the fastest, or who can win a 1v1 better. With my thief I can just use my bow and movement signet to get to points uber fast and win.

I did a quick forum search for ‘Revealed’, but didn’t see anyone but myself in another thread mention this.

Revealed only starts ‘if you attack while stealthed’. If you dont attack while stealthed, you wont get the revealed debuff. Since I run heavy shadow arts in my sPvP build, everytime I stealth I get 2x regeneration (usually end up being about 3k heal over 4 secs or so).. so I will often use CnD to stealth, wait for it to wear out, then CnD again for another stealth right after. This let’s me heal up very well.

As an engi fighting a theif is a kind of random. Sometimes I win easily and sometimes I drop instantly. I rock high health/toughness, and when going against thieves I tend to welcome the challenge as it usually results in a good fight.

However, I will agree with the fact that sometimes a thief will just destroy me before I can even see what happens. Every time I see pistol whip at the top in the after death damage window.

People are not taking into account taht there is currently issues with stealth, as in you are not instantly revealed when you do damage. this 1-2 secs of not being revealed makes a huge difference for pistol whip, as it takes a moment before the skill even starts channeling. were this issue fixed, you’d have a significantly larger window to stunbreakand get out.

Leveling a tailor, armorer, leatherworker, etc is not hard, but it still costs a ton of gold. we’re talking mundo bags here. like 30+. I want them 20-slots for all of my characters. This way is far more beneficial to me, even if PvP ranking is terribly slow.

So I’m like Deer 19 right now, and when I open deer chests I get 10-slot bags. The bags are actually a big reason why I’m devoting a lot of time to sPvP (also to learn the classes well), but I’d also like to know at what point you’d get 20-slot bags from sPvP, if you can get that high at all?

Wrong reasons? Them bags are EXPENSIVE! Gettin’ bags this way saves me at tonnn of gold (4 bags each character, 9 characters) and at the same time I get to learn the intricacies of every class.

btw wolfe, you don’t need the +movespeed terribly bad if you’r S/D, because of the two cripples and one immobilize. I usually still take the +25% movespeed signet though, because speed is great.

I prefer mine more. I go 30 Critical and 30 Shadow Arts.. the last 10 get switched around alot. I use the Power + Toughness + Vitality amulet.

I get a lot more damage out of Critical Strikes, the +10% over 6 iniative (not an initiative sensitive build, this is like all the time active) and +20% when under 50% hp. Shadow art traits are +regen upon stealthing, condition removal while stealthed, and +hp regen while stealthed. I’m in love with the Shadow Arts line. I use S/D for the extra condition removal/stunbreak/stealths, and also because the sword autoattack applies weakness/cripple which is awesome. Also having cripple on 4 is great too.
