Yea, PvP in GW2 is probably the fastest dying PvP in any mmo. It’s sad because the gameplay and combat is by far the best out of any mmo.
I think 50% of the reason for it being dead is the combat. Too simple.
I go to a website from time to time called mmorpg.com which is where I found out about GW2 to begin with. The forums there are more negative then the ones here as they have far more liberties to speak their mind. Upon release, the game was holding strong at around 9.4 rating out of 10. As of now that is down to 8.85 with the 2nd game at 8.44 that requires a retail purchase and monthly subscription. GW1 is at 7.58, at this rate GW1 will have a better rating then GW2 in about 2 months.
ANet better get it together, with the amount of work they put into GW2 to just let it die like this is terrible.
It’s fallen on metacritic user scores too. It’s down to 8.1. The Secret World is a 8.3
I stopped playing a month ago due to imbalance being ridiculous and the in game pvp community having crap attitudes. So just curious, how is everyone enjoying PvP these days? Worth coming back?
Biggest disappointing feature in game.
If they add another tier beyond ascended then I’ll take my words back but I still see this more as them fixing an oversight in terms of giving players something to work towards.
I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating. My last shred of faith is hanging by that thread. If it goes any further than this, I’m out for good.
Don’t worry they might not add a new tier, the will add “more powerful infusions” but since that’s not gear it’s ok huh?
If ascended gear had been in at release would you all still be complaining? I think most of the complaints are coming from people with full exotic that don’t like the fact they’re not top-tier any more. I understand the frustration there but I still think people need to look at this as a new rarity and not a new tier.
They explained it pretty well in the dev blog: the rarity levels had a gaping hole between exotic and legendary, they needed something to plug the gap. They’ve already said this stuff will be obtainable in WvW as well so the people whining about having to run the fractals for it have nothing to complain about.
Your second paragraph, and their blog, ,take absolutely no sense. The stats on legendaries are the SAME as exotics….so how does adding a new tier with HIGHER stats plug that gap? Now ascended items are essentially exotics and there is a gap between ascended and legendaries.
Are they going to add another tier to “bridge the gap” between ascended and legendaries now?
The gap isn’t in stats, it’s in difficulty to obtain. That’s what the blog was highlighting; player get decked out in exotics stupidly easy then have nothing to do but farm for a legendary. That wasn’t their intent. They claim they didn’t expect people to get full exotics so easily (naive I know) so the ascended gear is filling the gap between easy-to-get and near-impossible-to-get with just hard-to-get.
If they add another tier beyond ascended then I’ll take my words back but I still see this more as them fixing an oversight in terms of giving players something to work towards.
Right there was a gap in grind time. Wait for it… waaaait
Sooo why did they add stats????
What about when they add infusion tiers? Will you eat your words then?
I say go ahead and feel broken and empty inside that Arenanet shattered your fragile expectations by providing you with what you begged for by coincidentally adding another tier to the gear level. Please, if you feel so strongly about it, stop playing the game and stop posting here. Rest assured, you won’t be missed.
I’ll wait out the WoW locusts, and hopefully ANet will come back to their senses.
Thanks for the suggestion, though.
The WoW pvers have been gone. No large scale guild content.
LFM 3/6 Asc. link req.
Inv! 3/3 here.
Hahaha look at your infusions.! You need the +10 rare ones.
:(
You guys made a real good point. There was no gap, and if they felt there was a grind gap why wasn’t that gap bridge with cosmetics?
Just wait till they show you how the cash shop works with all of this.
Honestly, this is worse than the presidential debate.
You mean like Anet caught romnesia and forgot about the manifesto? Or like they are giving us a sketchy deal?
I’m betting the uber dungeon will drop a whole lot of uber Black Lion chests that need new more expensive keys. There will also be boosters than reduce the effect of Agony.
That’s one way of doing it….
almost just as powerful…
I would think that infusions or Ascended gear will be there for people who don’t have time.
Maybe the Ascended gear will be BoE, so that people could sell gems for gold to buy them.
What do you think?
Unfortunately I had to write what was probably the first piece of bad press that GW2 has ever gotten because of this. I did not enjoy it.
Nice article /impressed.
Doesn’t look like the Ascended gear announcement is doing NCSoft’s stock any favors today:
http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/overview?symbol=036570.KS
It’s had no effect yet. The stock is still falling form the “dim” 3rd qt report. If we see another 5-10% in the next ffew days, we will know.
I kinda think investors like this move. They are probably hanging around to see how the cash shop mixes in this.
The only thing that makes it mandatory is that (from what we have heard) the new gear type will ONLY be available via the dungeon, and that gear type is STATISTICALLY SUPERIOR to exotics.
Therefore, if you want to have the best gear for WvW…you gotta run the fractals.
Baseless assumption is baseless. You have no idea if this is even the case or not. Ascended gear, for all you know, might be a random WvW drop. Or otherwise attainable in WvW for badges…
This is a direct quote from their blog post…
Players will be able to acquire Ascended Rings in the Fractals of the Mists dungeon, and Ascended items worn on the back can be acquired through special Mystic Forge recipes.
I feel sorry for people like munkiman. These were the people that had the rug pulled from under them. Still they try though.
The sad thing is, is that NCsoft knew these people would do exactly what they are doing now.
This may be the largest thread of ticked of customers I’ve ever seen. I’m trying to think back on others, but I can’t remember one that’s longer or moving this quick.
The NGE shadows the anger at this.
Yup the Galvin backfired post (where a clueless EQ2 dev jumped in) if I remember correctly, something about 2500+ pages?
Whoa.

Right or wrong design decision , I do believe we as the mmorpg community need to hold companies accountable when they break their word, or we can expect more of the same in the future.
Although I can not stand the rabid fans who twisted and hyped every thing to a unreal level all the while bash other games and people who didn’t agree, I feel sorry for them. They were lied to.
They put there neck out there everyday defending things like the lack if progression and the Halloween event, only to have the rug pulled out from under them.
I for one support the change, but I’m not blind to the pain and embarrassment hardened supporters are feeling.
I hope you guys pull through. We might not always agree, but we are the community, not the devs, publisher, or shareholders, we are. I support you guys.

Lets make it so there are WvW levels, which only exist in WvW in addition to real levels, and increase your power just as much as real levels, so we can add a whole new layer of “progression” and content-specific power creep. That way the people who feel like “WvW is pointless.” can play it to “progress” instead of for fun, and everyone will need to grind their WvW level to compete on an even playing field, because who needs skill when you have artificial stat requirements to win, gained through grinding?
Well once the fun wore off, there was no point. Atleast with progression in WvW you could work for something (in the end fun) until the fun kicks in.
I haven’t seen this much rage since Swtor cut ranked battle grounds from patch 1.2.
That is because people cared about the game and wants to right the wrongs before it is becomes a catastrophe.
I unsubbed from swtor that night.

maybe if you people complaining would have bought some gems, this wouldn’t have happened.
People have obviously been buying gems and a lot of them if you read the financial reports that they gave for NCSoft investors.
No, this isn’t because of the core audience not paying up. This is because P.O.S no-lifers spent 1000 hours in the game since launch and are now complaining because they’ve done everything in the game faster than any development team can hope to keep up with. Now those whiny MMO addicts have twisted the one game that didn’t pander to them.
I read the report. It did not separate out cash shop revenue. It showed GW2 making around 3 mill won (or w/e) more than B&S, 13 mill more than Aion, 20mill more than Lineage 1&2.
The thing is all these games offer some form of sub and will surpass GW2 launch sales quickly. Maybe by the end of this yeah in B&S and Aion’s case. On top of that Anet is still in the red.
Much more needs to be spent in the case shop, and people need to be happy doing it. The forst step is to get them staying in game longer. Thus the new progression system. Remember we still haven’t heard how the cash shop will play into this.
I think this is at least partially a fair assessment of the situation. Through the whole evening I’ve had a kind of impending dread to the effect of: “It looks like this experiment didn’t work out after all.” There’s probably a revenue angle, and I’m not so naive as to think there wasn’t plenty of marketing research and probably some focus testing that led to a conclusion that “We need these kind of players to play and spend money, because they’re the ones who’ll spend most, and this is about money.” —Honestly, not a bad thing in and of itself; after all, this is business. From a purely economics perspective, the sensible thing is to toss players like me to the curb now that I’ve already paid my entry fee, and try to trade me in for players who are suckers for the cash shop scams. Good luck competing for those players, though.
Man I’ve been thinking that too. It almost looks like B2P could be bad for developer and game. The developer loses capital, and the gamer loses power.
I honestly would not be surprised if by this time next year there will be some type of premium payment model added.
There’s already a thread about ascended gear. Why create a new one?
This is about WvW progression. Did you miss that in the OP?

I ……WAS…….RIGHT!
Okay, so I said it was going to be a 5% difference and it looks to be more of a 4% difference.
Still, it’s only a ring slot and back slot items. …..NOT A BIG DEAL!
It’s 8 (EIGHT) %. So you’re utterly wrong. Did you finish school at all?
in a few months it will be 16
maybe if you people complaining would have bought some gems, this wouldn’t have happened.
This has the ring of truth to it. While it is disappointing that it seems the only way to make a financially successful mmo is gear treadmilling it isn’t entirely unexpected. Guess WOW will remain king for a while yet.
edit – Thanks Leiloni!
The crazy thing is if GW2 had a sub, they probably wouldn’t have to make this change of direction.
Report indicates that GW2 has established itself as one of the main earners of the company. Guess the pressure to maintain that position without box sales going forward is pretty heavy. I suppose this may be a result of the gem store not being as profitable as they hoped. Wonder if there were more attractive buys on there, coupled with better results stamping out 3rd party gold selling/botting this would not have happened?
yep stamping out the bots would have been a two fold gain. It would have stabilized the economy, and sold more boxes.
I guess the bots really did create a problem that is difficult to handle.
What, the earnings report that said GW2 is making tons of money and is NCSoft’s biggest earner worldwide? Yes, it makes sense to change a core aspect of a successful game that is the backbone of your companies revenue…
NCsoft stock dropped 10% that day. The bulk of the box sales have already been made. If there is not a huge up tick in cash shop purchases GW2 will be NCsofts smallest earner by the end of 1st qt 2012, maybe even 4th qt this year.

We’ll be talking about this one for years to come.
The day that ArenaNet decided to kill its own game.
In all honesty I do feel sorry for a lot people who stuck their neck out there and defended the old system and said this would never happen right up until the end. It makes them look bad.
I can’t help but to think this and the free trial are products of the earnings report. Something had to be done.
I wounder how the cash shop will be worked into all of this.
This seems the most likely explanation. I can understand why they are doing this, but it is sad.

Free content being added slowly so there’s more stuff to do at max level. Everyone, HURRY! Quit! This is madness!
As has been said before, new content – wonderful, bi montly gear progression – terrifying. Its NOT hard to understand.
It’s not like there will be a NEW set every month to grind for. They’re adding a few items now and once you get them, that’s it, those are best in slot until next expansion. Do you honestly believe that a few months from now they’ll come out and say hey guys, we have a new set of gear that’s slightly better than ascendants but lower than legendary, bla bla bla?
3 items are being added right now which is basically 2 types, rings and backs. This whole process could take between 4 and 10 months to finish, probably just in time for a new expansion.
Not true at all this first patch will give some the next at the end of the month will give more. They said this is just the beginning.
Apparen’ly while I was out playin’ the game, the sky fell down.
nope it’s a fresh new dawn!
Its too late for them to reconsider. They dont walk with us that much.
I will certainly wont quit the game for a small stat increase in just 2 slot items, but this new game philosophy will be an itch and a reminder of a broken manifesto everytime I play.
that 2 per item, will be 10 soon. They said “this is just the beginning”
If they keep this 2 month pace up we’ll need gear score soon.
Maybe I’m missing something because I haven’t been to WvW yet, but how would everyone getting 10 points more on their armor make it less pointless to you?
That would just be the first tier. Rank 1 or w/e. Add about 4 more ranks and some titles, and they would be on the right track.
Next the need to expand the map or find a way to add more small group objectives that effect the game. Then make guild keeps mean something.
Will there be a type of ascended gear (pvp gear) for WvW too? This was one of my biggest problems after about 3 weeks WvW felt pointless. I think if there was a WvW equivalent to Ascended gear it would make a big difference.
Ans so gear becomes > Skill.
In one fell swoop.
So will they be updating Wv3 gear as well or just ignore it and let Ascended gear rule it?
You do have a point here. No infusions, no ascended gear, you lose.
I literally am in shock that they are seriously doing this. Why even have that Manifesto video?
That was a long time ago things change.
“The new additions in November are just the start of our item progression initiative. We’re going to add tons of new high-level content to Guild Wars 2 in the future.”
can’t wait to see what the game looks like in 6 months!
And, in all likelihood, so am I. It’s just an additional tier past Exotics.
Hooray for progression! I may come back. Now lets get some WvW progression and we will have a winner on our hands! GJ Anet!
well, the same forum that QQ about the lack of stuffs to do at lvl 80 now QQ about Anet adding more stuffs to do at lvl 80. The same forum also QQ about the lack of " PROGRESSION" now QQ about Anet adding progression.
I think the introduction of the new armor type is good .This will make “I-got-exotics-already-now-i-have-no-goal-or-motivation-to-play” people stays longer.
New goal and New motivation, I like the sound of it.
The vast majority of us were in game playing because we liked no vertical climbs of pointlessness.
The thing is, every possible indicator shows that more people have left the game than are playing. The need people to play and buy from the cash shop, that is if you want an expansion. Progression helps them do this.
No, they need to get to a stable player base (one that agrees with their vision), and then determine how to operate within that revenue.
LoL doesn’t have more people than WoW playing it, but who cares because it freakin’ rocks all on it’s own.
I am sorry but i will have to disagree on the fact about LoL (if you was refering to League of Legends). LoL have had “steamrolled” WoW by the number of players. Heck it is even declared as the most played online game on the planet
Sorry for being off-topic…
You can disagree, but you are wrong WoW is the most played mmorpg. LoL is an mmo. If you don’t believe me ask Forbes. here is one article. It’s been said LoL has around 35 million players.

Strange how one typo can change the meaning of whole post. I am sorry, i corrected it. English is not my primary language anyway.

Still no official response yet
Its a shame that so many people are upset, a simple “no, these items will not be stronger than exotics” would calm the masses. I initially got the impression that Arenanet would be more communicative with the playerbase, but whenever I see the Arenanet logo on the forum, its just some manager closing the thread because the “question was answered”
They already said that they would be more powerful. What more of an explanation do you need?
Look you don’t have to go for ascended gear if you don’t want to.
That is the big question.
If it affects general PvE or especially WvW – then yes, yes we do.
If not, then why didn’t they just say so in a quick one line post?Yep. If the gear effects all stats and not just some special crap for the new harder dungeons then you are FORCED to get it to be on even footing in WvW.
Many, including myself, bought the game for WvW. And not having to worry about a gear treadmill, free to log in and do what I want to do every day (WvW), is a huge part of that.
It’s already been suggested. Best compromise is the new gear bein same stats as exotics but with the new slot. The thing that goes in new slot only effect your strength in the new dungeons.
If the gear is stronger and effects WvW and all PVE. They lied, period. There is no arguing it. And I will be sad and feel betrayed. I’ve sold this game to so many people just telling them about how awesome it is and the no treadmill is a big selling point.
I had to lol @ the guy trying to say we don’t want treadmills bc they are hard. How about you use skill to over come your opponent and content instead of relying on putting in more time and having stronger avatar stats? Who’s the one truly afraid of the challenge?
I’m sorry if you are unable to compete, in WvW no less, where you never have a 1v1 situation, then well I guess you are “forced” Even the actually your not, you could just get better.
Well, we know what happened if the patch gets delayed…
