It’s critical for cooking, yes?
Accountancy Waypoint, yo. Best waypoint in the game.
what ccrazool says is correct.
Woot! It’s rare, folks, but it happens!
Outside of raid instances which I haven’t seen. This game offers more of a variety of “endgame” activities than most mmos I’ve ever played, including years of WoW.
So I hear you don’t really like mmos but though you would never admit it, got soo addicted to one of them that it left your online gaming existance bitter & pointless.
Variety of endgame activities? Grinding DE’s over and over is no different than doing daily quest in WoW. Infact, you get less out of it, so its worse, its actually more of a grind.
lol, how can you say “you get less out of it”? Do you have a WoW-to-GW2 currency converter or something?
Weird. People be tryin to find anything to label as “endgame” so they can get told what to do next. GW2 has no gear power treadmills, no gated raid content, no months-long grind to get “competitive” in pvp… the lack of a carrot-on-a-stick from the devs that says “chase this goal next u guys” is driving some people NUTS, lol.
If an MMO is someone’s life replacement system, then yeah… not having a clearly defined “endgame” where the devs tell you what to do next can be scary.
Character continues to run after I stop controlling her.

Yup. This happens to me too sometimes.
To fix it, I type: awerfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasefcsdf and simultaneously hit the space bar a lot. Clears it right up.
I want an achievement that says I have travelled across every piece of land in this game.
Why do the devs FORCE me to travel across every piece of land in this game to get it?? WTF devs??
- You don’t need gear progression either. Gear progression is just another MMO’s ploy to get you to pay more monthly fees.
I quite enjoyed gear progression on WoW private servers, and I didn’t pay a dime. They sure got me with that ploy, oh boy!
“I stole a game for a long time. This let me play it for free.” — This is your argument? Congratulations?
Yes, and my highest level character is 53.
So much to do. Soooooo much to do.
I’m using a Razer Death Adder and it’s got Mac drivers that work really well. The Mac drivers can recognize which app you’re running and switch all your macros and keybinds on the fly. Not bad.
Readers,
I submit that your experience with fans and heat on an MBP while playing GW2 (or any 3D game) is expected and within tolerance. The fans spin up when the system is under load, correct, but that should not suggest that the load is out of tolerance for what the system was built to withstand.
Imagine you worked an 8-to-5 job doing video logos for your local TV station. Your MBP’s fans and temperature would be under this type of load all day long, and you wouldn’t worry too much about it — in fact, you would expect it to withstand a full day’s work on the job. So, when you play GW2 for 4 hours in a row, you’re not stressing your MBP out any more than it was designed to be stressed.
Also consider this: The aluminum material that the MBP’s body is made of is a natural heat sink. It’s going to feel hot by design. Did you notice, though, that when you turn the game off, the aluminum body cools down rather quickly? It’s not a sign of failure when the body gets hot — it’s a giant heatsink! It’s supposed to do that!
I can’t give any advice on programs that fiddle with the fans or other system components. I run mine without any tweaks of this nature. I worry that tweaks of this nature could be dangerous to the health of my MBP.
I absolutely, positively encourage you to always play with your MBP on a flat surface, and always ensure that its vents are clear of debris.

+1 to thread.
The command key is vital for common operations in a lot of different Mac apps. I would like to bind my F1, F2, F3 and F4 keys to Command-1, Command-2, and so on. Can’t do it — the mac client doesn’t recognize the key. Likewise, I’d like to be able to bind Command to “Show all NPCs” (or whatever the option is to show “yellow text” items/objects).
On a Mac Laptop, hitting Fn, Ctrl or Option/Alt is kind of an uncomfortable stretch. Command is right there on the thumb, where I’m used to for all my different Mac apps. Would love to use it in GW2!
I help becaus I want and becaus I want.
I do help selflessy but selflessly does not mean I don’t expcet to at least get something
I am not helping poor ppl.
ROFL awesome. This is literally awesome.
I asked a blue shirt at the Apple store today this very question.
I said “is it good for the unit to run with the fans blowing and the chips all hot for hours at a time?” He said yes — they’re designed for such use. As an example, he referred to people who do 3D rendering all day long as part of their jobs. The fans are blowing their whole shift, and as long as the vents are clear, it would be fine; this would be within what they expect the unit to go through in a typical day. Another example he gave was is that while the entire unit feels hot, the CPU/GPU gets that hot by design, and the aluminum body of the MacBook makes it seem worse than it is. Note that after you turn it off, the unit cools down rather quickly.
Also, it shouldn’t have to be said, but keep the vents clear. Don’t play GW2 with your MacBook on a pillow, blanket, or coat or something. Flat surface only, please.
If the fans fail or if the unit overheats, it would trigger the internal heat sensors, and shut down the machine automatically. Take it in for a checkup if it’s turning off when hot.
Also, don’t forget about GW2’s “FPS Limiter” option
@DevonCarlson: Aye, pinch-to-zoom works on the world map but it’s at the opposite end of responsiveness. It’s either very, very slow or not responsive at all. Using the thumb and index finger of one hand sometimes totally doesn’t work at all. Using the index fingers of both hands works a little better, but only marginally. I can’t tell if a quicker pinch or a slower pinch makes any difference either. I tried doing it with some “momentum” or “inertia”, too, but that didn’t seem to change it.
@Xellahmai: You’re welcome! It feels incredibly natural, doesn’t it? It’s the combination of “Mac OS X Settings, Trackpad, Three-Finger-Drag (checked)” and “GW2 Options, General, Camera, Mac Beta: Use either mouse button to change direction”. I LOVE not having to “click” the trackpad “button” and hold it down — it makes movements extremely fluid and easy.
Have you tried using pinch-to-zoom in the world map?
Great Scott! I hadn’t even thought to try. I’ll see how that works when I log in this evening!
Would pinch-to-zoom also work on the minimap? I don’t recall minimap scrolling to be as bad as the world map, but I do recall that it is a little high-speed.
I’m running it on a new MacBook Pro with Retina, jacked up to 2.6GHz i7 and 16GB of RAM. It’s ridiculously satisfying, and can get ~50fps in some areas, but it’s also gotta be about the most $$ you can spend on a laptop these days.
(thank you, work!)
Nono, I know about that standard bug. That’s not what this post is about! :-)
I have the controls set thusly:
- Mac OS Settings App, Trackpad, Point & Click = All boxes checked
- GW2 settings, Mac Beta: Use scrolling gestures to change direction = not checked
- GW2 settings, Mac Beta: Use either mouse button to change direction = checked
- GW2 settings, Camera, Rotation speed = like around 80%-ish
- GW2 settings, Camera, Use Free Camera = not checked
This allows me to pan my camera and change my character’s direction with a three-finger-drag on the touchpad. I can zoom the camera in or out with a two-finger-drag on the touchpad. I can move the mouse cursor around the screen with a one-finger-drag on the touchpad. I don’t have to “click” the touchpad button, a regular tap will work. I never have to two-finger-tap to do anything combat- or navigation-related; right-clicking UI elements like items or party portraits is all I two-finger-tap for. == AWESOME.
The problem is: when I am in the world map, scrolling is SUPER sensitive. I overshoot the zoom level I want all the time. It’s crazy fast. It is hard enough to manage that I have contemplated using the “+” and “-” icons at the bottom right.
I’ve tried adjusting the “Camera, Rotation Speed” slider in GW2 options, and I’ve tried adjusting the “Mouse, Scrolling Speed” slider in Mac OS X settings. Neither seem to affect the map zoom rate.
Can ye fix it, doctors?

Ya know, I never realized it but yeah… when I played WoW, it was a life replacement. These days, I don’t game like that anymore. My laptop’s been on the table right there all evening, and I only logged in for ~15 minutes, smashed some monsters, got a vista and a poi, then logged out. Back when I was playing WoW, I woulda been clicking away from the time I got home to bedtime.
I’m with OP that if someone wants a game to be a life replacement, they may need a game with a much, much steeper climb to “max stats” than GW2 offers.
“visit my website” leads to “make an account to log in” which often leads to “lol he used the email+password for his GW2 account” which then leads to your main, standing in the LA overflow, screaming “visit my website”.

You’re quite a different kind of gamer than I am, for sure. I don’t think my experience would relate to yours at all. I haven’t got full completion on all the sub-35 zones yet (which has really turned out to be a good “seeing all the sights” gauge), and I haven’t even seen the 50+ zones yet. I’m lvl 43 and haven’t been to Ascalon Catacombs once yet… though that’s mostly due to me not looking for groups. Like I said, I have a lot of sights left to see. Also, I have played to ~lvl10 with a lot of different classes and races to find one that I liked, so I guess that took some time. But I haven’t bought any gems at all, and I forsee literally months’ worth of gameplay ahead of me. You played it out in a couple weeks, which is a pace I can’t imagine. I hope you can get some satisfaction out of your purchases, but I dunno about the “hemorrhaging players” stuff.

Razer Deathadder here. Un-checked the “use mac gestures” box in my game options. Everything works perfectly now.
Adding my “thank you!” to the thread.
The only thing I used BOOTCAMP partition for was to play GW2. Now I don’t have to do a full reboot every time I want to check my email or log into my work systems. Epic.
Beta version seems great so far, and it can only get better. Massive /fistbumps all around the office, ANet.
Can data files from PC install be copied over?

Chiming in to 100% agree with Narai.8079 above. The way he/she described it worked great for me.
Before I found this post, I had to get creative.
Here’s how I found the file location:
- Downloaded and installed the GW2 mac client.
- Watched it begin to download the big dat file.
- Used Activity Monitor to see file activity on that process.
- Copied the file activity to a text file, and searched for “dat”
- Found the path!
Now that I had the path…
- I closed the GW2 client, then in Finder, I clicked Go, then Go to Folder…
- Pasted in the path: /Applications/Guild Wars 2.app/Contents/Resources/transgaming/c_drive/GW2
- Deleted the GW2.DAT that was downloading
- Copied the full-sized GW2.DAT from my BOOTCAMP partition into here.
Woot!
