I’ve no problem kiting melees with longbow. Paired with gs you can keep them off point in spvp. My guess is you have problem with the skill not firing if the enemy goes through you/walk past you.
The skills do auto-track, but moving and controlling the camera(to not face your opponent) will cause it to fail. So release movement key and left mouse button while firing the skill. You will auto-face the enemy while firing the skill – even if they went past you.
Wrong.
If the enemy goes through you, you are supposed to “fail” the ability. By failing the ability, no effect is made, and the ability is supposed to go on a 3 (if I recall correctly) second cooldown.
In cases like this The abilities like the ones of longbow DOES NOT fire ANY PROJECTILE (It should fire one in straight line of sight if what you say is correct and the only problem was the inability to follow target’s movement because of you forcing the camera to a wrong direction) > but that does not happen. The cooldown is blown AS IF the effect occurred, but none in reality did. You are robbed of your ability and even the chance to re-apply it.
And that’s the problem. And this happens even to skilled players. You won’t persuade me about that one.
So.. did you test what I suggested? (not moving, not holding camera view). I remembered it works. I have not played in a while, not sure if it changed. Standing still, not holding camera view, and rapid fire for full duration even as enemy went behind me(my toon will autoface)

Early stage of a fight I usually stay at range first in LB and let my pet harass.. that helps keeps me at high health.. if they decide to fight the pet, I get free shots at them.. or if you weren’t focused in a team fight you keep the bonus damage. You could change it for strength runes or pack runes I guess. Pack runes will solve the low crit.
I’m comfortable enough with the crit rate. You could use RaO for fury. Alternate setup I would use accuracy and fire sigil for LB with pack runes.
A power build inspired by the warrior. Basically its a regen ranger, but not entirely focused on surviving and tanking, it has good damage, can burst, condi remove, a lot of boons.
What you get:
-near 200hp/s regen from SoTW and regen boon. Like old warrior heal signet, but you still have troll unguent for high regen
-high toughness from SoS and going into Wilderness Survival and protection boon vs power damage enemy (to match warrior high toughness)
-3 condi remove per 10 sec from empathic bond (our cleansing ire), plus another 2 from sigil if you stay in GS. Switch to Evasive Purity for more condi clear
-reliable pet. -high protection and regen(260hp/s for pet) uptime from guard shout. extra crit dmg trait. using lynx for dps and lightning drake for burst
-25-30% extra damage (above 90% health, with boons, extra 5% if using two-handed training) -this and pet makes up for not going into power/prec trait lines
-2 AoE skill. Barrage and drake F2
-auto stunbreak(shared anguish), 20+ secs of stability
-team swiftness and regen. i think this will have potential for team pvp. cover speed and sustain for team so they dont have to build for it.
Weakness:
-no utility stunbreak (1 auto stunbreak with high cooldown). low stability uptime
-boon dependency
Playing tips:
-stall to regen. use stealth from LB and evade/block from GS.
-spam guard for swiftness. press f3 after guard to get pet to move with you.
-if defending a point, put pet to guard possible entry points. this may startle the enemy if they came by while the pet is stealthed
-start with lynx and LB, if enemy ignore lynx and focus on you(melee), switch to GS and drake, use drake F2 for chain burst damage. careful as enemy can simply walk behind the drake and the move will be interrupted. if teamfight, you can start with drake F2 on unaware players and barrage. alternatively, save it for when you are downed and while enemy is stomping. Works well against squishies and might even down them
Happy hunting!
i tried a bit in 5v5 for point holding(its not PU based). you can last a long time
main damage source:
-retal (focus 4 + sword 3(x2) + sword 5)
-phantasm
defense:
-signet ether regen
-mantra recovery + increase toughness on casting
-protection from phant regen
-long protection from rune
playstyle:
pop a defender or disenchanter based on the enemy ur facing, then summon the weapons phantasm. spam mantra to heal(ur phantasm will heal to so this synergizes)

lol what ruins hot join is friends on the same team coordinating. seen 2 thief done this. you can imagine what they can do
instead of stealth, maybe build for point decap? scorpion wire enemy out of point, basilisk venom, shadow step to point, immobilize(venom or pistol 2)/basilisk again if extra venom build.
repeat application of immobilize if cleansed. thief guild for extra scorpion wire. use a tanky amulet. role is to keep point neutralized until help comes
do people even try the longbow in actual pvp? vs glass cannon i can hit for 8-10k rapid fire.. recent patch made it easier to hit moving targets which is a problem before.. and initial shots in 1500 range before the enemy get in 1200, if you land a critical + flame blast sigil is like 4-5k damage.. and the spammable knockback + lightning reflexes + owl chill to keep people at range.. pair with gs to counter melee/widen gap. gs counter hits for another 5k against glass cannons + a knockback. i think its a matter of playstyle.. with this playstyle im always on my toes.. which i like.. shortbow bores me.. here let me fight you head on while i regen and my pet dps you. longbow is more tactical play which i feel is more stimulating than the static sb. ranger wasnt my first prof i came from mesmer and now barely touch my mesmer
What do you expect? Builds will counter skills/other builds. If build doesnt matter then try using any build that doesnt have any synergy or playstyle.
You could build against the phantasm spec too. A thief with blind on stealth will mess the summoning, a necro with lots of chill/cripple can go straight for the mesmer and lock it down.
in hotjoin 1v1 doesnt get you more points than going with the zerg. An aoe centric build will gain more points due to tagging. phantasm spec with the sword/pistol phantasm will only be able to tag one target, and at max you can just send them to 3 different target, but then you wont be focusing and they might not go down as fast. if they use gs phantasm, well if they go gs thats the time you go to kill them as they wont have blurred frenzy. im farming glory with longbow warrior. go where the zerg clash. f1 longbow. if theres a lot of people caught in it, it will recharge itself lol. most match i see ranger/necro at top. guess what? trap(aoe)/marks(aoe). and as phant mesmer i like to roam/backcap. doesnt get me that much point and run the risk of encountering the zerg
I’ve used that phantasm mesmer.. now im using condition warrior and can kill them just fine. Its true, if you would just use it, you will know the weakness:
1.you can easily run away from them
2.phantasm has pathing problems so go find a lower/higher ground.. a ranger did this to me.. stands on some platform where my sword phantasm cant reach
3.against phantasm mesmer its easier to identify the real one
4.LOS/blind can mes with summoning
There was a necro i couldnt beat. think it was a dagger necro with lots of cripple/chill.. and i cant cleanse them fast enough because well we have only 3 utility slot. and the standard phantasm build would take blink and decoy to mess with you/buy time to get phantasm out and the third will be signet of illusion for harder to kill phantasm. and there you have it.. stack conditions on a mesmer and he’s dead. if he has a lot of condition removal, that means he probably doesnt have blink/stealth. if you know you’re against a phantasm mesmer, use your block/invuln on the phantasm. if you’re a mesmer, do blur frenzy when the other mesmer is summoning=win. use skills tactically.. not just blow them all and hope for the best
yea i was just thinking of a build like this + rune of guardian for the burn on block. does rune of guardian has cooldown on the burn application? if it doesnt, it would work really well against multi hit skills
built an axe/shield bunker warrior last night.. it was fun and i can survive for a long time versus guardians/ele/ranger and take them down. i think the balance in the game is ok. just dont expect to rule everything with a single build which is what i think most peoples problem are. otherwise whats the use of having traits/setups
i think they should change it to 5% per unspent shatter or reverse it to having no clones=faster.. that way it can be used as an escape after distortion and would actually be useful outside combat
make confusion give quickness
Wow. How did you people fight against mobs 10 levels higher and in multiples even? Its like we’re playing a different game. I do love mesmer but please don’t dismiss that it is hard to level a mesmer. For new players, its hard in the sense that theres a lot of things you need to know like:
-never open with a phantasm unless you want it to be one-shotted(especially zerker/warden).
-gs mirror blade and winds of chaos have bounce range half of their attack range which is not mentioned in the skill (which is kinda counter intuitive for gs)
I think the problem lies with the scaling of the illusions health and Signet of Illusion’s delay in applying doesnt help. A level 80 illusion can better withstand a level 80 monster compared to the lower levels (could be just me though but thats what i felt) Dead clones/phantasm=dps loss
