Why is the tone and style of GW2 so "goofy"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

This is something that has kinda bugged me from the get-go. The tone and style of Guild Wars 1 was fairly dark, post-searing… The dialogue was fairly serious, people talked about serious things. Even though the storyline was kinda disjointed, it still had an air of legitimacy. As the series “matured”, we saw a little bit more levity and comedy in the game – such as Kilroy Stoneskin – or the quest NPC in Factions who implies, more or less, that he needs you to help him get viagra to make his wife happy.

Guild Wars 2 seems to take everything a bit far. The entire game feels like one running gag after the next. The dialogue feels like parody more than something to be taken seriously. The asura, for god’s sake, are an entire race devoted to parody – everything they say is in the context of something outlandish, goofy, or absurd. It reminds me of when you clicked units in Warcraft too many times, and they said funny out-of-character things – well the entire game of GW2 feels like one big reel of out-of-character one-liners, inside jokes, and running gags.

The character of Tybalt, for example, is one running gag after the next. One mission involves him disguising himself, (via magic of course) as a woman and … talking like a woman… and just acting like a complete and total kitten I’m sure the GW2 writers thought all this was terribly clever, but I found it to be a bit tiresome. What I’m really saying is that I would have been much more receptive to some mature writing that actually treats the audience like they’ve got an above-average IQ.

The whole game feels like that guy who thinks he’s a whole lot funnier than he really is. He’s always elbowing you, making wisecracks at everything…. eh eh eh eh eh – It’s like for the love of god TAKE SOMETHING SERIOUSLY. Not everything is a gag, A-net. Not everything has to be some goofy inside joke. Can we get some actual writers to do some serious storylines for Guild Wars? You’ve got an enormous amount of lore in the Guild Wars universe and it feels like you haven’t tapped into any of it.

We get it, A-net … you can make a joke. But can you actually tell a compelling fantasy story? I guess we’ll see.

In my opinion, Dailies are a shallow gameplay mechanic

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

darkdomino.9578

The GW2 dev team seem to have a fixation with dailies now – and this is a trend that I find somewhat disturbing, especially for a game that was touted as “above all that”

I invite you all to watch the GW2 dev manifesto, in case you’re interested in a good laugh:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35BPhT-KI1E

We were promised something different – and yet here is A-net, encouraging people grind away for dumb rewards. Did the same dev team that made this manifesto ALSO make the game? ‘cause it’s like GW2 is suffering from massive bipolar disorder.

I’ll say it one more time: “Dailies” are not gameplay. There is no difference between having a quest NPC tell you to “kill 10 centaurs” and have a daily objective of “10 underwater kills” – THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE.

I don’t care that there are dailies. I get that a lot of people are into that… but the focus of GW2 (As stated in the manifesto) was something bigger, and deeper… So far I haven’t seen that. C’mon A-net – you can do better than this. This isn’t why a majority of us are playing GW2, or got into the series in the first place.

I just can’t remain silent about this anymore. GW2 is seriously in trouble. This feels like abandonware at this point. You ask the devs what their vision of GW2 is and they prattle about the Scarlett living story.

I’m not sure how to defend this game anymore. Blowing up Lions Arch doesn’t change the fact that this game feels tired and played out. The developers are truly out of touch… Almost in a “playing violins as the Titanic goes down” level.

The level of arrogance coming from Anet right now has reminded me why I don’t play GW2 anymore. You guys have been milking the gem store for 2 years now with no meaningful updates and now you want to gouge people with this ridiculous pricing format? Making people rebuy the core game?

It takes serious balls to come out here and pull this stuff, Anet. It’s almost like you don’t realize you’re game community has been in a dire state for a long time now and this was your chance to win people over. What a joke.

I want to see the developers log into this game RIGHT NOW and show one of these events with hundreds of people on screen, on high settings, running at 60FPS.

They can’t do it, because this game was never optimized. It doesn’t utilize the GPU effectively and has the same godawful framerate dips that it had in the beta. Ever notice how Anet never posts actual gameplay footage from their events? It’s because it’s a freaking slideshow and they know it. Don’t get me started on the Crown Pavilion either… I talked to people with water-cooled 8-core SLI rigs that were getting as low as 17 FPS (and lower) in some areas. Give me a freaking break…

Playing games at 25 FPS is not why we all built/bought gaming rigs. It’s flat out unacceptable… I don’t get this kind of poor performance on ANY other game I own. It’s sloppy programming plain and simple.

The marketing department for Anet should be fired. No reprimand, no unpaid leave… Clean out your desk by the end of business hours.

The fact that anyone was allowed to market their game this way, with this pricing structure, is either malicious or incompetent… either way they have no business working for you.

How is GW2 doing financially?

Seems like everyone has an opinion on this subject, and I’m curious to know if anyone has any solid factual evidence either which way…

Some people say that GW2 is losing money, that 400,000 active players at any given time is considered “low” for the industry… and that GW2 doesn’t have the cashflow to produce the kind of expansion-pack level content that people are asking for. (and by expansion-pack grade content, I mean new zones, new classes/races, new storylines – not just mini-events)

Other people seem to think that A-net is doing just fine, and has plenty of money coming in from the gemstore and box sales. I read an interview by one of the big buys at A-net and he basically said that the “market was healthy” and that they had no cashflow problems. He also said something to the effect that the Black Lion Trading Post was profitable and that “players were doing their duty” as far as microtransactions go.

Anyway – I’m curious to know what people think about this…. The disconnect for me is that if A-net has the money to produce large-scale content for GW2 and isn’t … why? If they don’t have the money, or willingness to re-invest in GW2 in a meaningful way… what’s the future of GW2?

People often hold up GW2’s free2play model as one of the best/fairest in the industry… is the model working? If so, when can we expect actual meaningful content, such as Guild Halls, new gameplay mechanics, new classes/races?

GW2 has had no meaningful content in over a year. Living story is not content, imho. No new races, no mounts, no significant changes to the gameplay whatsoever. I don’t know what they’re doing with all the gemstore money, (maybe it’s going to Wildstar) but they sure as hell aren’t using it to develop the game.

Back in GW1 – an expansion was an entire CONTINENT of content. Nowadays, a full-price expansion means 1 class and some guild halls. My how times have changed.

Well, it’s been a year and the game is pretty much the same game it was a year ago… I’m curious to know why that is, if not for financial reasons.

It’s been a year and I still sometimes see my character chop down trees with his pickaxe. Hell, there are bugs in this game that are still there from the beta.

If GW2 is making money, when are they going to start investing in this game? Temporary events every 2 weeks is great and all, and I’ve enjoyed all of them – but that’s not content.

Let’s put it this way: I’d trade 5 living story events or festivals for 1 new class. I’d trade 10 living story events for 1 new playable race.

The game is still the same as it was a year ago? Really?

Aside from the myriad bug fixes (there have been pages and pages of them, many not even documented), there were quality of life upgrades (the account wallet, aoe looting, the end of culling, previewing in the market place), the addition of the Fractals, WxP in WvW, a revamp of AC, new jumping puzzles, new dynamic events, new minigames.

Maybe you’re just not paying attention.

Again, I guess our definitions are different… I don’t consider jump puzzles and living story events to be significant improvements to the game. They’re fun to do, yeah… but it’s not the same as adding a new race, or giving people something truly “new” to do in-game.

As far as things like the wallet – yeah that’s useful. I’m not gonna sit here and deny that. But do you honestly look at the new improved wallet, and then at the game world and go “Yeah, this is different.”

Hey, you’re gonna need to use a 3rd party voice program – such as Skype

Steam also has a built-in voice chat functionality too.

Assuming you’re using Skype – you would start the call with your friend, then launch Guild Wars 2.

You may want to turn the music/sound down in-game so that you can hear the other person.

Hope this helps!

Nobody is denying that things like Super Adventure Box aren’t fun or interesting in their own regard.

People’s complaints are that they aren’t substantive. It’s not actual content… it’s a distraction. It’s like dangling keys in front of a baby… and as soon as the event is over, we’ll be back to square one again.

None of these events have any permanent impact on the game-world, or provide depth or meaning. In fact, the Super Adventure Box (from what I’ve read) is just one big high-five to Nintendo… that has literally nothing to do with the game world or furthering any sort of story. It was just some cool side project some Anet dev was working on.

Either way, people are hungry for actual meaningful content in this game… not just “VOTE FOR ELLEN KIEL IN LION’S ARCH” or more “<INSERT CREATURE TYPES> ARE ATTACKING <RANDOM LOCATION>!” – That isn’t content. That’s filler. That’s a distraction…. that’s all it is.

and as far as these “big projects” go… I’m skeptical. Something I’m hearing over and over among players is that ArenaNet’s budget is extremely tiny and all their income from the gemstore and box sales is being syphoned away to other projects like Wildstar. If this is the case, Guild Wars 2 is dead in the water. If 2014 rolls around and there aren’t definite plans for a MASSIVE release… I’m talking new races, new classes, new landmasses to explore, new quests, new hearts, etc etc etc… This game WILL stagnate and people will leave.

I won’t ever leave Guild Wars 2… but I gotta be honest here – there are some sweet MMOs coming up in 2014… Elder Scrolls Online being one of them. If Guild Wars 2 hasn’t gotten its act together by then, it’s going to take a back seat while I play something else for a while. Sorry Anet, that’s just business.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

You’re not being rewarded for failure when you don’t complete the event on time.

You’re being rewarded for the 40 minutes you spent attempting it.

Many events in GW2 offer reduced or partial awards for failing. To me it’s an incentive… “See this? Imagine what it’d be if you had succeeded!”

I’ve been in clockwork events where all the kitten commanders all go to the same spot on the map and refused to listen to instructions and we fail. I can’t tell you how many times you see commanders in map chat wanting to posture and have kitten ing matches with other commanders instead of getting the work done.

You’re telling me I should be punished and get no reward because people are kittened and can’t finish the event?

No thanks. I’ll take my reward for failure, and you can take your phony self righteousness.

Why is Performance Never/Rarely Addressed?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: darkdomino.9578

darkdomino.9578

We have folks constantly working to improve performance, we’ve actually made quite a few perf updates this year. You’ll see more perf updates in the upcoming releases, we have a team working entirely on performance at all times that won’t be going away any time soon.

Even when I watch developers play their own game on Twitch, I can see the same poor performance, low frames, and whatnot on the developer’s own PC’s. Even the developers can’t run this game at a solid 60 FPS … it’s hilarious

This game is NOTORIOUS among just about everyone who plays it for having poor performance on just about every system. I know people with 3000 dollar liquid cooled desktop rigs who still experience framerate drops in WvW and the Clockwork Chaos.

This has been a constant source of frustration for me, ever since the Beta… I’ve been telling you guys for a YEAR now that your game needs to be optimized and everyone tries to shout me down… “GET A NEW PC LOLOLOLOL” … Spoiler alert, everyone has experienced huge framerate drops in this game. It’s got nothing to do with the hardware you’ve got.

So, don’t take this the wrong way – but you need to tell the “Performance Team” or whatever they’re called to pull some weekend shifts or something… cause the performance situation in GW2 is downright godawful. It makes me wonder if you guys are even playing your own game over there…. You should fire it up sometime and see how things really are.

How does gw2 hold up vs gw1 (Reddit post)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

GW1 was one of the buggiest, most shallow games I’ve ever played, and I’ve played it since 2005.

Terrible voice acting. Terrible story… Thousands of fetch quests and a dull, lifeless, poorly rendered game world.

I would never go back to GW1. Even with GW2’s many flaws, it’s still a vastly superior gameplay experience.
