I have tried the build with some success over the last days in soloQ-the skill cap is high, and I do have some questions.

When I am facing a 1v1, I just cant seem to put out enough dmg with staff/sw+focus. especially against bunker/DD hybrid warriors and guardians Im having a hard time, since I try to play half-melee range and still cant seem to put out enough pressure. What I always try to do is “curtain-warden-curtain pull at half warden cast-ileap swap-blurred-weapon swap-chaos storm-warlock”
But even this combo doesnt seem to put enough pressure on my enemies. I tried to switch to GS instead of staff, but then I have even less room for mistakes and am thief-fodder again.

Any advice?

Thanks for the build, Sticker, Ill give it a try for sure!

What I will do is to swap crippling dissipation (Dom V) for menders purity (Insp IV).
With pistol 5/staff 5/CI you have so many disabling abilities, that you wont really need another cripple imho.
Menders purity, on the other hand, will be great with the heal mantra+harmonious mantras. Your condition cleanse will be awesome in combination with mantra of resolve-or you could even try to change MoR for another utility, like decoy.

Im a newbie hambow, too (main mesmer) and funny enough, didnt ask about the rotation.
What I do mostly is: bow F1 – bow 5 – swap – hammer F1 – hammer 5 – hammer 2 – hammer 4 – hammer AA

as a burst sequence. Anything that could bedone better here?

I am totally with solstice an dank on this one.

There is no need to be overly formal, but it is a psychologically proven fact, that humans are much more willing to do as you wish, when you word your concerns in a respectful manner, than in a neutral tone. This is by no means a concious decision of the people you talk to in game. But if you would examine how many players actually did what you asked them to do either in a neutral, or in a polite tone, Im absolutley sure you would find bigger numbers in the latter group.

Hi fellow pvpers,

after the new patch hit, I collected tons of crafting materials, like all of you did. Since I never really played pve, Im unsure what to do with it. In rare cases I roam with my mesmer in wvw. My questions are:

Could I try to craft a legendary strictly by pvping (no matter how long it would take), or would I still have to do cruesome things like “explore the whole world”?

Is there anything else I could do, like crafting ascended stuff, esp. weapons, for wvw (Im running in complete exotics atm)?

Are there any guides you know of, specifically wich pvp reward lines to choose?

I thought Ive been reading somewhere, that regeneration actually was the only heal to scale relativly well with healing power.
Clone generation for me is a non-issue in a phantasm build and you would have 3 phantasms with the disenchanter. Plus you could have a “burst” using the signet after a pantasm spawn.
That being said, youre probably right about the build being not useful. Ill just give it a try.

Halting strike seems like a great idea for this high-power-low-critchance-build, since (from what I know) the trait was changed, so that it cant crit anymore, right?

Im reluctant to try this, because I got so used to dealing aa dmg while evaluating the fight and making decisions. Im afraid to loose dmg by not spamming aa-buttons enough, esp. with the sword. Do you have this problem?

Disruptors sustainement should work well with signet of ether and phantasmal healing. Your phantsms should hit like a truck like in a standard phantasm build.

Though it seems questionable, if this would work better than a 20/20/30 phant interrupt build with chaotic interruption.

PVP nerd lf advice: crafting stuff?

I have only been playing pvp for month (after having leveled 2 chars to 80), I dont really know what to do with all the craftings stuff we earn now through pvp. I constantly press the “deposit collectible”-button. Sure, I could sell it all, but I dont need money too bad either.

Does anyone have a good guide/ressource with weapon skins to craft? Or ascended stuff? Would I be able to craft a legendary solely by earning mats through pvp?

Any help appriciated!

I just checked it out in HotM. The burning duration is rounded to 1 1/2 second (should be +55% from the rune and +condi dmg).

Procs from the healing/rune skill tick 4 times (for 695 dmg with ~1250 condi dmg)
Procs from WoC (self and clone) proc sometimes once and sometimes twice for the same amount.

I’m not sure if the runes are really worth it for spvp/tpvp over, lets say nightmare or even krait with the same playstyle. Now for wvw with +100% duration its a different story.

Two changes brought to us with the patch have not yet been discussed in their impact on mesmer pvp:

1. Recently I am running a pantasm build (GS/sw-p, 4/6/4/0/0) with the new traveler runes and blink as a roamer/decapper/teamfighter. It really feels a lot like roaming with a trickery thief, albeit certainly not as mobile. You can drop 2 phantasms and a illusionary wave in a teamfight and move on to decap. Those runes combined with our inherent 1v1-capabilities could make mesmers worthwhile as roamers in pvp.

2. Only from reading, the celestial amulet is much stronger now in pvp and has in summa much more stat points, than other amulets. Eles seem to already use this quite often. In the past, hybrid mesmer builds often got dismissed as being not effective, although many of our traits and skills seem to favour hybrid power/condition play. I have not messed with this so far-are there any builds using this amulet effectivly already?

I’d love to hear from anyone having tested those already!

For spvp I will try 3 builds:

First:
20/20/0/0/30 , staff+sc/p, rabid, lyssa, with IE and the new torment-on-shatter, rending shatters an shattered concentration in the dom tree.

Second:
20/20/0/0/30, staff+sc/torch, rabid, lyssa, with IE and the new torment-on-shatter, rending shatters and torch trait in the dom tree

Third:
0/20/20/0/30, staff+sc/pistol, rabid, lyssa, with IE and the new torment-on-shatter.

I cant really forsee wich one will be the best for spvp, esp. soloQ…

In a spvp enviroment, I wont do enough power shatter dmg. Aside from the fact, that you have small room for making mistakes, often you simply wont get your clones on your target because of aoe spam in teamfight. Additionally, you have close to no defense against thieves. A genius like supcutie may make a power shatter build work in tpvp, I for sure can not (having only climbed the EU teamQ ladder to around 250 with a condi-non-PU-build).

So, only from reading and imagining, condi shatter looks promising to me. And I totally agree with Pyro; this wouldnt put us anywhere else in the meta. But for me, a shatter build is much more satisfying to play, than a clone death build. And from what we know now, it will even be more effective.

In a 0/20/20/0/30 build you would have sharper images for proccing bleed on crit for your illusions. Because of this trait alone rabid gear, in my opinion, will always be better than other +condi gear.
Does anyone have a more accurate calculation of the expected torment dmg/clone? Im at work and cant check my gw2 toon.

Add to that illusionary elasticity as a master trait and you wont have to constantly shatter for sustaining dps, your staff clones will do the work between F2 and F3…

To me, that proofs the +1000 healing power trait will be hard to make use of.

4s of 1 stack of torment/shattered clone, on the other hand, with mailm (?) looks like what I expected. Considering my 9,5s torment from scepter block (5 stacks) does around (max., when moving) 6,5k dmg in pvp (around 1200 condi dmg); every shattered clone should do around 600 torment dmg max. This is not including the +300 condi dmg. youll get from the shatter trait line. Sounds like condi shatter is in the game again, at least in pvp.
Am I way off with this calculation?

Judging that 2v2 games will have completly different balancing issues than 5v5 is no assumption, that is common sense. F.e. there are many classes (builds rather) very strong in small scale fight, who suffer from drawbacks in other fields of the game (teamfight), so that in the big picture of a 5v5 conquest they’re not considered too strong-those variables would inevitably change in a 2v2 setup. So that with introducing such game modes would mean more balancing issues – the ones already there, plus the ones coming only from 2v2 – seems pretty clear to me. And you would have to care about balancing with the same trait sets, skills, weapons et ect. for both game modes. This core problem to me is very comparable to WoW Arena, despite all the differences the games have.

Wether or not gw2 could more easily live with the needed balance adaptions than WoW, you’re right, are only assumptions. But look at your own record of threads in this forum concerning game balance and especially anets speed of changing glaring issues. Im not overly confident.

I definitly agree there should be new game modes.
With my experiences from WoW Arena, I definitly disagree about 2v2.

What 2v2 will do, is causing new, heavy balancing issues. Balancing is already not been taking care of quickly and thouroughly enough in gw2.

Blizzard has stated pvp balance would be established for 5v5 arena matches, not 2v2. They introduced 2v2 (and 3v3) arenas nevertheless and after months and years of futile attempts of balancing esp. 2v2, they had to turn of rewards for this game mode. I simply cannot believe that anet will succeed in a comparable situation with its game.

I wouldnt even consider taking PU in a tpvp condi build-with staff, high armor, decoy or blink, possibly torch your defense is plenty. Your staff attacks in meele range are really strong.
And being slow can be countered with clever use of portal. That skill alone can win matches for your team (not that I have mastered the skill, much to learn still…). But in my experience, you need to be able to 1v1 successfully when running portal, b/c chances are, noone will follow you through your exeunt-at least in soloQ. The changes will boost those, already quite good, capabilities.

@Boss: www you might be right-for spvp the first thing, that came to my mind was, what Chaos said. This is going to be OP. Theres a reason why the mesmer community wasnt crying that loud about staff clones’ attacks not bouncing. Enemies on bases cant ignore your staff clones so easily anymore. With clone on death traits, a condition build will be an even better point assaulter, than it is now; plus your teamfight ability will increase.

That being said, Ill definitly try a staff/GS hybrid build. Mirror blade has always been a great ability, combined with IE.

staff clones will be affected by illusionary elasticity after the (probably) 18th of march patch. That, to me, would include making staff clones’ “wind of chaos” bounce at all, like the mesmer ones, and on top add one additional bounce from the trait.

Do you read it the same way? If yes, this change would open some very interesting staff/condi builds…any ideas on top of your heads?

On to the goodies:

Deceptive evasion: to use DE in a phantasm build really made me ponder until I tried it out-it works marvelously. Clones irritate your enemy even in higher tier gameplay. Sword and staff clones both not only contibute to your damage (albeit minimal), but they also are a plague; noboy wants a clone (or the real mesmer?) to swing a sword at him in meele range, blocking your attacks, stripping your boons. Because your foes get burns, bleeds (staff clones) and confusion (clone death), you are sometimes mistaken for a condi mesmer and your hard hitting phantasms are ignored. As you most of the time dont have more than 2 phantasms out (no +health for them), theres really no need to worry about overwriting phants with DE.

Weapon choice: One thing that always bothered me with pantasm builds in tpvp was the fact, that phants died to quickly in teamfights or even 1v1 because of AoE spam. I found the combination of staff/s+p to solve that problem. By initiating fights at max. distance with one phant, circling around the point to drop off the other and then moving on, its very hard for your opponents to cleave your range-attacking dmg dealers. Condi necros are still hard fights because of aoe cleave, but you can beat them if youre clever enough (or theyre not). So for me, pistol and staff are not debateble for this build to work.

Runes of speed: another choice I was sceptical about (+vitality is inferior to toughness, +swiftness duration is obsolet), but turned out to be really good because of the +25% speed increase. Your roaming feels much, much quicker, your kiting improves alot (although strafing is not affected, you have to run forward), you can chase fleeing foes and bail out yourself more reliably. All-in-all you have to test it for yourself: this speed buff was a much bigger benefit, than you would assume when you read it.

Duellist on 12 sec CD, phantasmal haste: obvious, but still underrated by myself in the beginning: with your phantasms out of harms way and not dying early, in combination with phantasmal haste rises the pressure on your enemy. If your phants and you are grouped in a large triangle around your (stupid hambow, cough, cough) enemy on the point, he has a hard time deciding who to attack first, since he wont be able to cleave you and your illusions.
On the other hand, if you are in trouble and need to buy you time, just hit distortion-dodge-diversion without hesitation: you’ll have another duellist up soon and turn the tables!

Null field: I like to use null field offensivly (guards, eles, warriors) on points if I see those classes with massive buffs, and defensivly against terrormancers (still a hard matchup) and most engis. The chaos armor from staff #1 inside is a nice addon. In teamfight, null field can really help clear the point for your tough classes. I wouldnt leave home without in tpvp. With this build, you have a blind from dazzling glamours additionally (also for portal!)

Portal: I know not everyone is sold on portal in soloQ-I definitly am. There’s numerous matches this skill alone has won the game for my team; when everything is set nicely after the beginning, you control 2 points and can roam close/mid with portal, its very hard for your enemy to regain a point (it doesnt work out this way in soloQ all the time, but oh well…)

toughness: so here comes the main “con” of this build. With 1836 armor you are easy prey for trickery thieves if caught off-guard and for any zerker builds. If you see them coming though, you stand a good chance: you can stealth, kite around objects (runes of speed!), blurred frenzy, magic bullet, distort and dodge, while your phantasms feast on their health. High skill floor here and still much to learn for me.

A standard point assault 1v1 would be: duellist at max range – magic bullet – swap – chaos storm on the stunned enemy – warlock – phase retreat (all while circeling around the point). If the enemy is dangerous at range, I start with decoy, same rotation afterwards.

I think I will stick to that build for quite some time and I’d really love to see some of you guys trying this out and giving some feedback!

I wanted to share a tpvp build I have been testing over the last few days and that I found to be fun and succesful. Ill give you some of my thoughts about advantages and disadvanteges.

I play soloQ mostly and the build tries to cater to that: its meant as an all purpose-roamer, strong in 1v1 (you cant prevent that in soloQ), fast, and still viable in teamplay. I tested it on EU soloQ, matchmaking between 95% and ~800.

First things first: the 6-piece bonus listed for the runes of speed on intothemist.com is wrong. Its +25% speed in reality (just like travellers runes in PvE), more on that later.

In general, you want to get your phants out and survive, just like with any phantasm build. Duellist hits for aprox. 3200 dmg (w/o bleed stacks), warlock for aprox. 3000 dmg (2 condis on target) on a heavy golem.

20/20/30: The Best Lockdown Trait Spread?

Has anyone tested one of those builds in tpvp? I would think, that a s/s-staff build would be best here, with portal/decoy/MoR. Though I have to admit, I have a bad feeling about lyssa runes being my only defense against the abundant condition spam from necros and engis…

This build. In my opinion the best build he has ever crafted. You are very strong 1v1 and still good in teamfights. If you learn to use the scepter block properly (Pyro has some great advices in his soloQ guide) you’re putting out some serious damage.
But the best thing is: you can play on point most of the time and dont rely and long stealthes too much; you can even force enemies off the point. My usual start for a fight is (from range): duellist – magic bullet – chaos storm on the stunned enemy – warlock – phase retreat inside the storm. If you want to end a fight quickly (2vs1 i.e.) I mass invis for the boons, then the same rotation and move behind the foe.

I have to pour some water into the wine. I managed to play Solo Q (what I do most of the time, my schedule doesnt allow a team) until 90% on EU leaderbords with mindcrush, from that level up I got eaten alive by engis and thieves; it really was like hitting a brick wall. I switched to the non-PU condi build sensotix came up with after december 10th patch and have easily been able to play into the 500. So while I think a piano virtous like supcutie could make a lockdown shatter build work in tpvp, an average player like me for sure can not.
I really would support the idea of extending the shutdown capabilities of a mesmer and reduce his damage options in return. That way we would have a unique role in tpvp teamplay.

Thanks for the educated, well written, gentile, but not superficial thread (esp. to Chaos, your writings are always worth reading!). The mesmer forum is balm to my eyes compared to many of the others.

The amount of detail you had in there is stunning, also your knowledge of the different classes (I dont have the time to play them, so Im quite lost with many skills of my adverseries).
I especially liked the “combos”, and imedieatly tried some of those.

And I laughed a bit, when reading under “pros”: good 1v1, and then for every description of a class you can meet 1v1: “hard” “very hard” “medium-hard” :-)

Hey Sensotix, thanks for the new input, I really love to follow your builds and gameplay!

Ive got 2 questions with this one: do you play on point, in melee range to your enemy? For me it looks like it has to be that way; otherwise the clones wouldnt be close enough to the enemy when exploding, because you dont have sword clones.

And: is your dmg output enough to kill bunker builds (sep. guerdians and engis)? I used to play a similar clone-spamming build, but rebuild to shatter, b/c I couldnt down those nasty bunkers…

Meanwhile, I sneakily have rebuild my mesmer while at work. What I noticed was, that with confounding suggestions the dazes in the tooltips turned blue and went up from “1s” to “1 1/4s”.
But after equipping the mesmer rune, the tooltip didnt reflect the +33% gain in daze duration, it stayed at “1 1/4s”.
Can anyone check if this is a tooltip error, or a dysfunction of the mesmer rune? I cant test time differences (although they are important in pvp) that are so small.

thanks to you for this exceptionally informative thread!

I have a question (I already posted in a different thread, but got no answer): Im in love with soloQ, b/c I dont have time for a team. Id like to be succesfull, so from my experience you need a build balanced between being able to 1v1 and to add to teamfights; plus you need to roam alot and thus be quick.

I tried shatter and died too often, tried PU condi clone spam with moderate success, but didnt put out enough damage in team fights.

Do you think an interrupt build, like mind crush, could do well in this regard? I already tried it, but realized it would take me very long to optimize my playstyle. Do you have any suggestions for a build for the sole purpose of soloQ? Perhaps a modified interrup build?

first of all: thank you for your great work for the community! Its a pleasure watching your videos!

I have one question. I play mesmer in soloQ almost exclusively (no time for a team).
What build would you suggest to be the most effective?
Im playing PU/condi atm, trying to roam and take bases, and to help teamfight. I often find my damage is lacking, and Im quite slow. On the other hand, a shatter build like your tpvp build requires much teamwork and therefore isnt so suited for soloQ I guess? And would you concentrate on solo roaming or teamfighting in soloQ?

I’m speaking of tpvp exclusivly.

“Into the void” is, technically spoken, an aoe knockdown. So you can disengage and interrupt with it just as good as with “pistol whip”. But you can potentially interrupt more than 2 players, thats why I thought it could work well in teamfights on a node.

At node fighting, I really got to like the iwarden, too. In intense battle, a well timed iwarden+ileap combo on the node can do quite some damage.

Im for sure not at top 100 tpvp. But I think it could work well with this build.

thanks for the build, Ill give it a try.

Have you considered playing it with focus?

You would have an aoe interrupt for multiple BI might stacks at once with “into the void”. Plus you’d have better mobility if forced into a roamer role.
