First off,, sorry to those other threads that I’ve not read/visited but these three are I think the most relevant (view and comment wise) to date.
Who plays WvW only? – https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/wuv/Who-plays-WvW-only/first
The state of WvW (as I see it) – https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/wuv/The-state-of-WvW-as-I-see-it
[A cry for help] look at your wvw forums – https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/wuv/A-cry-for-help-look-at-your-wvw-forums
Yeah let’s face it, WvW is a niche. People who play only WvW is a lot lot fewer. It kinda makes sense that a company like Anet will tend to look over a small percentage of people. Heck, even we do it all over the internet when we almost always look at the most viewed/shared/upped stuff.
I believe that WvW players shouting and screaming cannot achieve anything. Saying stuff like WvW players are the most hardcore of the hardcore GW2 players don’t mean anything when you have thousands of other players silverwasting tens of hours per day.
We’ll just get tagged as the vocal minority. The lack of dev posts/updates in WvW thread is almost a confirmation of that, though I’d like to think that the “WvW devs” are busy working on WvW stuff.
So what can our niche community do? First, less/no negativity and anger and shouting. Second, be nice and inviting to new players which there are probably a bunch of them at the moment. Most importantly, try to show Anet how valuable WvW players are.
The most valuable commodity in the MMO space right now is player retention. I think most of the negativity is from the fact that a lot of WvW players have stuck it out for 2 years or more.
Being in a pve focused guild, I’ve seen people go hardcore in pve and then stop playing within the year. We’ve had over 500 members and out of those only 50 can be considered active, and mostly only during the guild missions. That is with all the pve updates, contents, events, marketing, hype, and pve people still stop playing,, granted that they still have more people and I guess new players.
The WvW players kept on playing without any major update on the game mode. Yes almost no one plays WvW exclusively since a lot of us needs to visit pve for gold or just to hang out.
Random thoughts, tried to organize but breakfast is done and I’ll eat now.
Thanks for reading o/
Here is a summary of what you guys have brought up in our previous discussions:
- 24 hour coverage
- How do we make play time in off hours valuable without blowing out the score?
- Snowballing
- How do we give worlds a fighting chance throughout the duration of the match?
- Stagnation
- How do I feel continuously challenged when my world is ahead?
- How does my world break the hold that other worlds have on me when I’m behind?
24 hour coverage – Get. More. People. To. Play. WvW. In. All. Timezones. Anet increased/improved spvp rewards to get more pve people playing so why not in WvW. People play mmo’s way into the night for lamer stuff like pve farming and stuff so why not WvW.
Snowballing – OK. So in NA tier 1 there are things called an all-call, or whatever the respective servers refer to it. Basically if they want to win, they rally their forces to do coordinated and sustained attacks on maps. BG JQ TC have pulled off from behind wins without Anet holding their hands.
Stagnation – see above.
—————————————————————————————————————
No I have not read all posts, just the summary the dev posted. So about the scoring periods.. I think that it will simply highlight the coverage imbalances in WvW if things are the same as now.
- A system with scoring periods will force guilds and players in specific timezones to really lock their timezones EVERYTIME to win.
- It may burn out WvW focused players since they will be expected to show up regularly to win those scoring periods.
- Internal server drama. Really depends on the people in respective servers but not unlikely to happen.
+ It makes it easier for guilds and WvW groups to know which timezone will have more fights.
Just the stuff that crossed my thoughts after browsing the thread.
But please, try to encourage more people in playing WvW FIRST, BEFORE doing massive changes. I tried playing in IoJ’s tier and yeah WvW there is so different from T1, a lot more dead actually, so I can only imagine in lower tiers.
Quite disappointing really, since not a lot of T1 players complain here, probably because WvW in our tier is in a relatively healthier state. Most of the radical posters I see here with ideas that want to really change the nature of WvW are from servers with lackluster WvW, and I don’t blame them because everyone wants to have fun.
So yeah, Anet should get more people out of dungeons, mats farming areas, and bring those to WvW. Changing scoring whatever, sure servers will have improve(?) chances of winning, but winning the match-up is not fun if there are no fun engagements during the week. Majority of players in WvW just wants to have fun by playing “World vs World”
So yeah. Dont mess with anything. T1 is happy, T8 is happy. Everyone in between is probably happy
Except those who are not happy.
Anyway, this discussion made it clear it is who you play with that’s important and a number of ideas in this thread preserved that without restricting the number of people who could play at a time. These have had a number of names but for the sake of discussion I’ll go with Alliances. The idea that I liked for Alliances is that it is a group of guilds and people that are guaranteed to stay together no matter how things are rearranged. There would probably need to be a size limit on Alliances and several of you pointed out that whatever limits are put in place it should be based on WvW participation.
This would happen at regular intervals, the intervals were all over the map as were the size of the worlds in this thread so I will propose this cadence:
- Off Season
- Tournament
- Restructure
- Create new Worlds
- Redistribute Alliances
This cycle would take a few months given the cadence of tournaments we have had which is about the time that we would want to rebalance populations. After the restructure, players could transfer like they do now if they so desired.
Alliances would provide continuity for the community. I see the server pride of today becoming Alliance pride because of that continuity. But I also see the off season as a time for the newly formed world of alliances to develop their own identity as they head into the tournament. Keep in mind that if an alliance was big enough to fill a world that mapping becomes one to one. If that became the case maybe the world could just take the alliance name. It’s interesting because that time together gives everyone involved a chance to see if they all want to ally together to truly solidify into a world. If not, you are still playing with your community for the glory of your alliance in the next restructure. But your community would be playing with other communities new to you and maybe this new bunch is a better fit for you and an opportunity for your alliance to grow.
The pieces for this idea comes from a number of posts in this thread. There are also some thoughts in there from some discussions I’ve had with several guild leaders. I just glommed it all together into something that I think could be a workable solution. I do want to emphasize though that this is all brainstorming
What i understand from the alliance idea is that server groups in wvw will be replaced by the alliance system?
So for example, BG world is filled up by bg alliance + x alliance will be up against JQ and TC worlds with alliances in those worlds?
And the assingment of those alliances in different worlds will depend on the size of the alliance/s per world?

Population caps are simply dumb. Just no.
Says the guy that transferred to the biggest bandwagon server in NA.
WvW is supposed to be competitive, and the thought of fighting other servers in other tiers should help re-build world pride and the enemy of my enemy thinking should apply
That is the idea behind temporarily lowering the cap to even out server population. I would love to fight some different servers but that won’t ever happen because the servers just above us can easily field triple our numbers.
We are fighting SoR this week and no matter how many times we wipe groups much larger than our own we just don’t have the people to stop the several other SoR zergs from capping our stuff.
If you look at the server scores for this week you will see pretty much everyone is running into this problem.
I believe that incentives to move to lower servers won’t be enough because that would just fill up new servers while keeping large population imbalances among the rest. I’m all for offering incentives to make the transition a little less painful for people but that won’t fix the problem on its own.
A temporary fixed cap is the quickest way to even out the population across all servers and make WvW a real competition.
I’m understand why you, being on BG, would hate this idea, but you’ve moved before, you can do it again or go to EotM while waiting to get in to WvW.
Dude, i bandwagoned to BG before it was cool. Free transfer era bro.
Yeah high population servers can field more people in theory,, but there are queues before thay happen. Unless of course you refer to just 10 people so yeah thrice that isnt a problem for hihger tier servers. As I mentioned all servers can queue wvw IF THEIR PLAYERS WANT.
I’ve been on BG for quite some time so Im sorry if I cant emphatize with lower tier servers about wvw, so stop with dumb ideas about server shuffling as you probably have not tried T1 wvw.
Dumb ideas like population capping will just wreck our fun and will not really help servers with little to no interest in wvw. It’s saying you cant get more people in wvw so nobody else should be able to. Again, we need positive ideas not negative.
Btw the mention of Sor brought some fun memories
Yes please. And while you guys are on it, please NERF the rewards in EoTM. Nerfing the old champ trains seem like a joke after you introduced a far better farm and leveling map.
The amount of farming and easy leveling in EoTM is really sad from the perspective of veteran GW2, especially WvW players.
To start with, I play in Blackgate and I transferred there before the end of free transfer, so my view is heavily biased towards how we in BG WvW. Also thanks to the dev guy who spends time looking through these posts, bad idea though
TLDR:
Help servers get organized and improve their WvW. Maybe add a feature to easily rally their existing population.
Server mergers, battle groups/guild(or sever?) alliances, population caps are listed bad to worst for me. Those should be used as last resort, or better yet scrapped altogether.
I have not read ALL of the posts, but browsing through, there’s a lot of negative ideas floating around. By negative, I mean destroying or at the very least damaging what’s already there like T1 servers, and the current WvW model.
So instead, why not try to improve the other servers first?
Looking at the top servers, at least in NA, most people usually says they are over-stacked, high population and whatever. But how did they get stacked with WvW players? Guild transfers in some way, but it is still because the people in those servers organized their WvW population and recruited from PVE.
Blackgate is really fortunate to have had an organized WvW community early in the game. Right now, it’s quite hard to rally your server due to megaservers. Gone are the days of people shouting in chat to get more people in WvW.
Maybe add a sort of chatbox in the WvW window for servers to view, or some feature to help organize.
Regarding population, none of us have any right to comment about it since WE HAVE NO DATA. Though even the low population servers can probably queue WvW if they want to since each WvW map can only hold a hundred players per server.
But since server mergers have been mentioned by the dev, they probably have some idea of actual deficit in players. If you want to merge servers, looking at the huge timezone gaps and try to balance it there is how. Sorry but it’s hard to separate general WvW population and timezone coverage unless you plan to make WvW regional, in which case, that’s boring as hell and we’ll all just play during NA :/
As to how to keep world pride, merging with previous enemies,, WvW is supposed to be competitive, and the thought of fighting other servers in other tiers should help re-build world pride and the enemy of my enemy thinking should apply
Sorry, battlegroups whatever doesn’t convince me that it’s a good idea. That will also counter against world pride and whatnot, that the first question regarding mergers aim to resolve.
Population caps are simply dumb. Just no.
Ok,,
As far as I can tell, most are ok with the exhaust thing just that no one wants a general implementation. I for one am against any global supply/siege limitation, and letting the community decide.
Again, focus on a specific problem and implement a solution for that. (Yes, banning the well known trolls would be great)
Siege trolling is a complex issue because people can easily siege troll and depending on the situation, it can be fun or really damaging.
(edited by dtzy.5901)
I believe that we should focus on a specific problem instead of trying to solve everything with a general ‘solution.’
Personally, I find the biggest problem with siege trolls is that they can burn keep supplies easily and siege cap that keep. Use the exhaustion thing only when inside your keep’s range.
Siege trolling in open field is a lesser problem since most groups use comms anyway and even a somewhat organized group will be able to tell which siege to build.
When you get burned out from playing a game it just means you played way too much. No need to over analyze.
As for the tournament,, the tourney style is a fail and needs to change. Heck anet loves rng so just rng the match ups next time if they cant figure out a good format.
Dynamic events as a way to get people to spread out in more maps have been discussed in one of woodenpotatoes (youtube him) vids. Some people in the gw2 community have been asking to make dynamic events more dynamic by having them scale up the longer they are idle (no one doing). Of course having harder content should mean better rewards like the thread starter is suggesting.
I totally agree with the idea since these so called dynamic events becomes stagnant events regardless and changes nothing in pve play.
This would make wvw irrelevant. I recommend going back to pve and spvp
Also disagree. A crapload of people already have at least one and making it account bound would make it look like everyone owns a legendary.
Hi. Well the game will run with those specs but it will be slow. I’d guess about 30fps max in low density areas. It would probably average around 15-20fps and that is unbearable to a lot of people.
Bunch of wvspvpwvw stuff again…………. Can’t wait for the week and season1 to be over.
Good fun fights to everyone I guess..
This thread has been disappointingly cordial.
Anyway,, this week’s match up was fun and did not disappoint! Hoping to get a bit more later.
Thanks JQ for the fights!
Shout out to the sos group last night during EU for gol3m rushing our bay and garri in sos bl
Fun stuff earlier in bgbl. [ONE], [TW]o , [CHOO] doing coordinated stuff against our merry bunch of _ led bt the malevolent Omen and L[EE]
more fun fightS to come I hope. Also want to see SoS outside of ebg, our queue there is beyond crazy
Just to clarify, most people that whines about ZD are the few special IRON members, most of SoR was just like “oh we lost big deal”, we still fight and have fun. If you on SoR and goes on TS you would know that this is true
Glad to hear it. As I said earlier, I have absolutely no doubt that SoR will regroup and come back swinging hard again come Friday night.
This is what we like to see especially bg vs sor will continue for the next few weeks.
Never knew so much behind the forums drama exists. Pretty much everyone knew that sor was the stacked NA server during eu time. Guess that’s bg now. Oh joy..
Hopefully the pve achievement hunters will be gone this week. Then we can really wvw against SoR and the T2 servers in between. (sorry T2 guys but yeah)
I definitely disagree with removing penalties for moving guilds since that breaks the significance server choice and may also encourage frequent server hopping.
It will all depend on the players though. Any server regardless of population count can queue their wvw if they want to and be competitive.
All I see is SoR and BG have PvE achievement hunters that actually listen/follow the pin.
..Congrats?
You have… no idea. True that BG have decent pugs, but the recent wave of PVE pugs are just…………………
Lol at the 2v1 against JQ in week 1…
As a BG player, I always see 2v1 against us. SoR dudes and ladies probably think that as well. Point is constant and orchestrated 2v1 barely exist, usually just perceived. Just the nature of 3-way fights.
It also makes a lot of sense to always 2v1 JQ with the given match-ups and I would recommend the tier 2 servers to do that as well since the gap between T1 and T2 is huge as they have been learning in the past and based on the scores right now.
Oh and BG was serious from the start of week 2. We just had a “boost” that gave SOR’s EU timezone a massive shock.
WoodenPotatoes in youtube, that’s all I’m sayin
Generally, just a better sense of continuity. Simple transition lines from one story arc to another would really help, like if you finish the 1-20 story lines, your friends wish you luck in your order and those things you will be doing.
And more lore. Specifically, more background details since not all of us who play GW2 played GW.
Just watched the lore video about Cantha and it was very interesting and would like to see it in the game.
Haven’t played GW (unfortunately) but from what I’ve been seeing/reading, GW2 took a hit in the lore department for more dynamic gameplay. On a side note, the gw2 human storyline was a train wreck..
Right now though, I just hope that ANet improves on the existing lore since the implementation really sucked that I have not bothered to go all the way in the personal story line.
Yeah, precision bonus 5 for the superior rata sum rune still not giving 90. Currently gives 50 precision instead of 90.
I think linguists need a better word for random since some people can’t seem to understand it.
As for getting the item you used to participate, well I guess that’s supposed to make us feel that we only wasted 9 items instead of 10 hahaha.
