Most mobile and most escape abilities in game = OP. My main is a thief but I have every other class at 80. Most can’t run away from thieves and warriors, add in so many stealth opportunities and you can come in and out of combat whenever. This leads to easy 2v1s or more. No other class can claim that in the game.
We ALWAYS ask for necro mobility. Why not just give Dark Path the same mechanics as infiltrator’s signet or Guardian’s teleports that send you towards location range even if you don’t hit target?
umm.. it’s on the front page.. https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/thief/S-P-stun-daze-lock-build-video/first
The one class that is REALLY tough on us at the moment are good S/D thieves. But that will change tomorrow when they have to actually cast their Sword #2.
Playing against Blackgate last night with the roaming GS build, I handled every class great except S/D thief, condition necros, and condition engis. I’m thinking of switching to gs/staff for a faster escape and the chaos field. Not to mention taking advantage of the bouncing staff for the fury and switching back to GS.
My gear gives me stats really similar to the one in Vash’s but with 1k more HP.

Props to Vash for showing us great examples of the triangle shatter offense. It actually bursts harder than my d/d thief. And against any zerker opponent that targets you, blink away from stun, torch 4, gs 2, triangle setup and dodge, shatter. Usually dead, if not, daze, izerker. Brilliant.
It makes a world of difference for GS as the main weapon and even makes me think about going for Sunrise now for my mes instead of Incinerator for thief…
Also I was debating with myself whether Precise Wrack or Compounding Power is better. But since this is a crazy mesmer burst build, you want to make people panic with your mind wracks.
Good job Vash!
You tag with the auto attack.
So you haven’t really tried P/P w/ ricochet? Rate of fire is way higher than the auto attack on SB. You will get bounces and trigger crits at a much more frequent rate, which = better AOE, more tagging.
As for the poster saying tag w/ #4… lol, good luck w/ that low dmg to tag something before it dies from your buddies.
Doesn’t P/P with ricochet trait tag better? Unload and those bullets start flying, coupled w/ a sigil of fire and I’m pretty sure it tags more than firing that cluster bomb, waiting, detonating, or the 3 bounce of the regular shot. Especially in zerg speeds when enemies get killed by the time you fire off your 2nd regular attack, or prior to a cluster bomb splitting.
Been using S/P and P/P or SB in roaming for a while now and it’s really fun. 10/30/0/0/30, Knights armor w/ Perplexity Runes and Zerker/Valkyrie trinkets. Instead of withdraw like most people you probably want Hide in Shadows so you can get untargeted with stealth. SoS, Infiltraitor’s Signet, and Shadow Refuge are your utilities. You just have to know when to retreat if you get severely outnumbered or are fighting more than 1 condition class.
The nice part is you can catch and immobilize/stun people better than any class (even teleporting guardians) as you have infiltraitor’s sig/strike/steal which all in all is faster than Zerker Guardian’s JI/sword teleport/gs leap.
The hardest classes to fight are Guardians, Thieves, then Warriors. The rest have posed really no problem. And once you get your timing right, killing a d/p by blocking all his stealth attempts just feels so good.
Let’s just compare…
Mesmer’s blink has 10s faster recharge than our own teleport utility
Mesmer’s channel heal reflects projectikitten
th of these make them better at surviving (not to mention their whole class mechanic thing).
Anyone else feel really slow these days? :P
look. short bow skill #5. range 900. cast it 2 times in 2 sec and range 1800. then he go in hide. restore 2 init. then again hide, again restore. done. u cant cath him so easy. ok enough
Wrong. I can do it easily.
Thief uses IA 2 times= 1800 range
VS.
Mesmer uses Blink (900)and phase retreat(1200)= 2100 range
or,
Mesmer uses Blink (900) and Temporal Curtain (900) and pulls (600) the thief. It can pull a thief at 900 range back to 300 range and use Illusionary Leap (600 range) and cripple+chain him, shatter him to death. This is what I usually do, Blink+Temporal. And let me tell you, it is so, kitten , easy.
I love my Mesmer but traited right, thieves gets 50% speed in stealth, meaning in combat when you are running slow due to combat speed debuff, he just has to stealth and he will be running in out of combat speed, significantly faster than you even with your swiftness. Coupled with teleports from bow and another teleport from utility or sword. It’s not even a close comparison. I can’t believe you dragged this out for a page but i thought some more people should set you straight.
again with the necro at the bottom?? shakes head
guardian and mesmer are slowest potential. Necro has many skills that can increase speed Guardian as 1 and a single leap, mesmer has 1 and a blink skill.
Lol at the delusional necro.
It’s a given that every class can get permanent swiftness, so then it’s about what other abilities can get you more distance. Warriors, thieves, guardians, and rangers all have 2+ leap / teleport abilities. Therefore if all trained for permanent swiftness, they are top tier. Eles are now towards the bottom, because RTL has a massive cool down. Mesmers have 2 teleports but one requires a target and the other has a longer cool down so they are slower. Which leaves an engineer that I don’t play, and necro who has no leaps and 1 worm sacrifice teleport that has the longest cool down of all the teleports… So yeah, sorry I love necro but they are by far the slowest profession. Oh also necro doesn’t have access to 15s heal so they can’t only rely on rune of centaur for permanent swiftness, so that’s another knock on them for speed.
The reason Rangers, Thieves, Guardians, and Warriors are faster are all because of their leaping abilities. Rangers can fly around the map with GS leap and Sword roll/leap, Thieves shoot teleporting arrows/heartseeker, Guardians have a teleport, sword blink, and Greatword leap, Warriors have GS spin and rush.
So yeah, they all move really fast in bursts. Since we have the staff teleport and blink, it’s good enough w/ swiftness to get to a underwater area wheverever you are on the map. And once in the water, we become the fastest class thanks to Spear 2 & 4 (and Centaur helm for speed if using runes).
How about letting us detonate dark path so we go where the claw was and applying the dmg and chill there? Every other class has much better gap closers or distance skills and this would pretty much solve that.
same here, can’t login b/c of network error
Umm… shortbow stun traited with moment of clarity is the best way to burst w/ a shortbow… you do other class equivalents if you use QZ right when you stun (and your pet is attacking them). If you need some more add a sigil of paralyzation.
Totally agree that RaO should be a shout.. other classes have 36s-90s cooldown elites, why not rangers? Ours is 120 at the shortest >_<
If you want to live, have a way to always stealth, whether it’s dagger offhand or leaping through smoke. Thief’s biggest advantage in wvwvw is stealth and that’s the only way to take on multiple enemies and coming out alive or escaping with your hide intact.
s/p is possibly one of the harder choices as it doesn’t let you stealth, the main damage (pistol whip) also roots you so you’re not going to be landing it all the time.
S/D if you want to teleport around and daze as part of a 2 man or + team since your damage is a bit lower
I personally prefer d/d, especially if you get movement speed in stealth and the shadow arts traits.
Drop kick is hilarious with the sword, the root makes me hate it though.
And Serpent Strike is a cool roll/hit. Wish more utilities of ours were movement based.
All of the GS animations are good, feels like they spent more time on that weapon than all the other Ranger ones.
Loving the new patch. Makes this build very very viable now. Just played a few matches in sPVP (doesn’t mean much but its good to test some combos) and rocked it. Previously I played sword/horn and LB or SB, but with SoH, melee pets, and faster arrows, using the GS is actually a better burst due to the gap closer.

I’m used to playing Eles and have a thief too so moving around + finger dexterity isn’t anything new, and you’ll need that for this build:
As you approach your foe, f2 on Jaguar
GS Swoop (close distance before your jaguar hits)
Hilt Bash (stun/daze + jaguar will now hit extra hard)
Maul
Weapon Switch (swiftness+fury)
Point Blank Shot
Hunter’s Shot
Rapid Fire + Switch animals + Wolf attack (quickness, and wolf will probably knock them down)
They’re usually dead by now, but if it’s a tanky build, switch back to GS, block/interrupt, repeat. If in a team, open up with Barrage instead of GS Swoop. Dodge to keep up protection and lightning reflexes when needed. Quickening Zephyr is there for rez’s or if you need that extra burst of GS auto attack right before you kill them and stomp.
In PVE, switch Eagle Eye for Piercing Arrows (arrows go through mobs), and if you’re tough, switch Hide in Plain Sight with Martial Mastery (20% GS cooldown)
For runes, I was debating on Air, Eagle, Ranger, or Lyssa. But Lyssa has a pretty good conditional removal + all buffs which can make a lot of classes panic when they’re low on HP already from your burst.

For perspective, elementalists are the fastest in the game as they have permanent swiftness with tier 1 aura trait, and a offhand skill that is basically like our sword 2 but without the delay and having to change camera. They also have 2 other traits that can get speed increase.
Mesmers have tier 2 trait with focus offhand for perma swiftness only, and a teleport utility.
Thieves have a teleport bow attack and the signet. And stealth and teleport utilities.
So yeah, I’m definitely thankful for our signet change, but its not like all classes are going to be the same speed. Eles will always smoke you, and thieves will always get away better with arrows and stealth.
and notice how Guardians have untargetable invulnerable spirit weapons..
So the problem with reducing Story Mode rewards, is that experienced players now have NO INCENTIVE to complete it. Thereby making pick up groups for new players harder. Soon when you have a veteran population, new players won’t be able to find a group to do the story mode with.
This is not a good move for the game. Do a similar timer to what you guys are doing for explorable or something but let there be a reason to do Story Mode.
