I’ve run thru this story mission a fair number of times, first time this has popped up though. Wind up having a conversation with what could possibly be The Toupee of Zhaitan. Awkward.
I was almost certain this was Commander Shephard taking time off after finishing the Reapers. Especially with “I gotta go” being said when I left the merchant.
The nightmare Court memories are fed to the tree, I believe the Soundless memories are also.
From the wiki:
_as the tree gathers emotions and memories, she draws from the Nightmare Court as well as their kinder brethren, and her pool of memories swells with both dark and light thoughts. _
My personal opinion is that the nightmare has nothing to do with Mordy, and that the dream and the nightmare are simply two sides of the same coin. I say this because the Nightmare Court still seems intent on fighting dragons.
I think the only reason that Mordy was able to get to Scarlet was because she was separated from her defenses in the isolation chamber. I believe the dream is a localized phenomenon that is protecting the minions of the grove from dragon corruption. While in the chamber Scarlet was separated from the dream and became vulnerable to Mordy.
Its not just one thing in particular its the combination of a lot of things. I don’t care that its a lesbian relationship, its the way its poorly written. When it was Caithe and Faolain I thought wow this is not the usual stuff you see in a computer game, well done Anet for breaking down the norm. Then Kas and Marjory turned up and that’s when it started getting stupid. It’s not only that I don’t like those two characters, but it doesn’t help when they constantly flirt with each other while in serious situations.
That’s a fine point, but wasn’t the one I was addressing. I was addressing how fictional straight couples are shown doing the same stuff all the time, flirting in serious situations, getting stupid, being unrealistic. And yet, whenever it’s a straight romance in question, their sexuality is never brought up. Usually nobody bats an eyelid at the incongruity of it.
Straight romances get away with absolutely anything in fiction, be it unrealistic, incongruous, or downright jarring. They can be shoe-horned into anything, including advertising. But no eyelids are batted. The same crime is committed by a homosexual relationship, and the commentators come out in force to condemn how it’s pushy and unreasonable.
I simply think there’s a double-standard.
As for your question you really need to sit back and think about this one for yourself. Ask yourself who normally plays fantasy MMO type games? who plays PC games in general? what is the percentage of gay/lesbian people (i.e. its about 3.7% in the U.S) Then ask yourself that question again and see if you can work it out for yourself. It’s not that hard, the statistics are out there.
I know the statistics. That point is always brought up, so I’m well acquainted with it.
The vast, vast, vast majority of media with romance in it, in every medium, is dominated almost entirely by heterosexual relationships. The gay relationships are bloody rare by comparison. And yet, when they do crop up, the response is always a shade of that; “obvious gay stuff being shoved down our throats again!!”
It’s not about the ratio. It’s about the double-standard people have.
At least for humans I would argue that the Krytan indifference to same-sex pairings stems from the fact that Tyrian humans have never had rigid gender roles in any of their societies. If gender doesn’t have the same sort of expectations attached to it that we have in our society then what gender someone is attracted to also becomes less of an issue as well.
Slow clap
Great read. Seriously, really like how you’ve formatted this post.
I agree with pretty much everything you’ve said. The story needs to find purpose. As it stands, the living world feels like we’re just going through the motions with each update. Don’t get me wrong, I’m interested in finding out what exactly the deal is with Scarlet and all… HOWEVER. The story doesn’t really feel like it’s progressing. Everything is contained in a way that all of it could be inter sped with the personal story pre-Zhaitan, and everything would still flow fine.
If they followed your suggested timeline… Hnng. It’d be stellar.
I’m all for destroying the pact now.
What am I reading.
we need a killer rabbit next
oh wait..
The Dolyak union: Dolyak United Mobile Brigade (DUMB) pushed them out.
There are horses in Tyria, but the running joke is that they are never on-camera. They show up in art, in references, in the books, in NPC chatter, but their models have not been dropped in game and it’s the case since GW1 (except for necrid horsemen). I assume this is a Monty Python reference (there are several in both games), since everyone in The Holy Grail ran around and just clacked coconuts together even though horses existed.
Tarnished Coast
They all fled to a magical land called “Equestria” many moons ago.
Ironically enough, Scarlet Briar is known there as “Twilight Sparkle”, a pony princess beloved by all.

Maybe horses were bred out of existence due to centaurs? MAGIC!
There is also a tombstone in GW2 that reads:
“Hank the Blacksmith 1020-1081 Shod all the king’s horses with honor”
There was also a horse head available as one of the options for guild capes in GW1.
This kind of confirms that there where horses at one time. I would have to assume the Charr ate them.
Well there were undead in Guild Wars that rode skeletal horses, though those were from Orr. My best bet is that horses were primarily found in Orr, but were eradicated when the continent fell. Though why we don’t see Risen Horses galloping around… Maybe the corpses weren’t usable? Though I do believe that the Risen Knights have horse heads, so maybe they were used as spare parts for those…
What I think happened was, Tyria is kind of like a game of Pokemon to the Gods, and when the horses started to evolve, they forgot to press B.
Totally true, maybe slightly fabricated story.
Serious answer, I dunno. I mean, we had Necrid Horsemen and Banished Dream Riders in GW1. They must of got that form from somewhere, right?
Time is a river.
The door is ajar.
Humans got hungry and ate them all to extinction…it wouldn’t be the first time.
I remember Kristen mentioning once that her design (silhouette at least) was a bit inspired by the Nefertiti bust. I thought that was cool
I think it’d be really cool if we could have a character-specific title available from creation that reflected the racial biography choices, similar to the profession-specific choice granting a unique armor skin. The racial biography choice is a big part of how a character defines themselves personally, but there’s no real way to display it in-game (and for humans, it doesn’t even figure into the personal story in any way). Racial skills can show it off in some cases, but those are rarely worth using over profession skills.
For norn, it could be something like “Guarded by ____” with the appropriate Spirit of the Wild, depending on what the player chose—a player who chooses Raven at creation would have access to the title “Guarded by Raven.” Or “Becomes the ____,” the way shapeshifting norn NPCs have (shapeshifting as a norn trait has sort of disappeared into the background since players have to choose to make it their elite skill over something likely more useful).
For sylvari, it could be “Born of Twilight/Dawn/Night/Day.” For charr, “Soldier of the _ Legion.” For humans, “Blessed by _.” For asura, “College of _ Alumnus.”
It’d be awesome to have something available to make that connection to our character’s biography visible.
There are 3 sets of these stories for each race. 15 in total. I’m interested in all of mine, as well, but man… the undertaking to continue that story is just crazy to think about. I honestly don’t think they have the resources.
Personal story or home instance isn’t a problem. they can just make it work like a character “reincarnation” with zero personal stories completed, zero memories of the character’s previous life. basically you will start from your new race’s home instance as a 80lvl(or whatever your level is) without any completed stories. your map completion and gear will stay. i don’t think this is that hard to code, it must be because of their policy.

+make npc’s consistently turn their head to look at who their talking to. a good example is the ending scene of queens jubilee when the PC fights scarlet in the fun house. Logan and anise are talking to each other in very strong tones but not once do they face each other! staring off into space….. what a windfall for role players.
+make npc’s consistently move their mouths when their talking. some move their mouths and some don’t. whats up, arena?
+make npc’s turn there whole body to face the person they are talking to when they are very serious about what they are saying. put more emphasis on body language. most of the way we communicate is through body language.
+make npc’s tougher to kill. they are too weak and should be just as strong as a player. many people we meet in the game are trained soldiers not farmers. when they come back from unconsciousness make them climb to their feet slowly, shaking their heads et cetera. as it is now npc’s leap to their feet the second the encounter is over and its very jarring. another idea i have is to remove the instant awakening from unconsciousness and let the player revive the npc’s one by one.
little details. consistency of animation and fluid feedback will make the experience and encounters with people in the game have a little more impact.
peace metta infinite waters diving deep once again.
Why do human men avoid sleeping with female Sylvari?
BECAUSE THERE IS A STIGMA!!! =D

IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW!
For every Skill you have, there’s a Kodan in the World with the exact same name.
Yeah, as far as the classes go I think they have most of the bases covered. I will say one thing though, any class they do add should be unique and not just a mashup of two existing classes. Something with unique play mechanics that adds depth not just volume.
There are a lot of things to break, smash, destroy in this game but most of them are related to events or heart quests. Of course you can “interact” and destroy them even after the event is over but it not giving an incentive to do so.
I remember we had around Christmas a dungeon Toypocalipse where we could actually destroy and smash almost everything not only if we wanted to, but involuntarely just putting a fire spell or a sword swing.
My suggestion is to create all over the world smash-able, destroy-able environment other then those needed for events, that would react to the spells or hits taken from random use of skills
I think this would really make the world more real.
The timer these environment items will spawn back will be around 20-40 min so it will seem "more"permanent destruction.
There is a place in Planes of Asford where if you fight some ghosts near some ruins (there is Vista point too) the skills break involuntarily the walls and the walls collapse .
I like how runescape did their housing back when I played it; the home is seperated from everything else, and you just have to type in the person’s name to enter their house. You can add different types of rooms and make multiple floors. Basic concept but solid.
We are sworn together by our blood…
I feel like this would just streamline the whole process and make things just a bit more convenient to quickly send mail to my friends. Dragging the item would just bring up the mail screen with the username of the person you dragged to, and included the item into the send box.
