I tested this a few times tonight (sorry fellas..for science!!)
Basically if you log out while you go downed, by esc + pressing log out to character select, and then log right back in you do NOT die. If you log right back in, you are actually in downed state (in my situation I was in the middle of heart of the mists in a downed state). I logged out when I was downed, and came back into game as downed, thus I think it is fair to assume that no one got any points, or badges, and also my armor was not damaged as well.
This happened for 3 out of the 4 times I tried it. The remaining 1/4 I logged back in as dead, which may be because I logged out with low health in down state or waited a bit longer to log back in. In any case, it doesn’t necessarily mean you die.

Not sure for dungeons but shields aren’t too great in PvE. Warriors don’t really need them in PvE, they can get quite a bit glass cannon and still survive. Probably more effective in WvW, but the cooldowns are a little too long to rely on to save you..

Well if you hate ranged then guardian is definitely for you, because their range is the worst in the game and it’s constantly a point of contention among the guardian community when it comes to WvW.
Anyways, in small man fights I think guardians would do better especially if it was a 1v2, though I do fine on my warrior in most cases. If the player is smart enough to kite your guardian (most aren’t) then you are basically dead though. Guardian is obviously more preferred in sPvP and I play thief/guardian exclusively in sPvP now but overall I think warrior is better than either for WvW because of the huge focus on ranged combat whether you are looking for it or not. The warrior can use longbow in keep siege/defense and rifle for ranged fights if melee becomes out of the question, and has warhorn to get to places/get away from places quickly. I run axe/mace + rifle in WvW usually or axe/mace + hammer if I’m with a ranged class.

I blame server transfers and the mechanisms behind WvW for this. I’ve been on Yak’s since the beginning, and more often than not Yak’s Bend is the one getting completely kittenon, many times coming in dead last by tens of thousands of points. When the fights have been even there’s been a lot of sportsmanship, with Yak’s letting other servers take back their orbs when hacking has occurred. It’s true #1 servers do not attract #1 players, they attract bottom feeders, but Yak’s has also become a lot more organized in the last month than it ever was. In the end Anet needs to revisit the mechanics behind WvW in general and the ranking system in particular, but in the meantime other servers need to pick up their game. That’s what Yak’s Bend did; complaining about being outnumbered and everyone leaving our server (most major guilds did in fact leave us) only got us so far.

The only guardians that have given me trouble are greatsword guardians..they do a good amount of damage while still being pretty defensive. I run defektive’s cc/hammer build, not the DPS variant.
With a well-played guardian of any other type, the fight will usually last long enough that someone adds onto the fight. Haven’t noticed a lot of well-played guardians though, especially in WvW and sPvP (not that I can point fingers, warrior has some of the worst players I’ve ever seen)

Anyways thieves are not invincible during dagger storm, and they can’t dodge during it either, so hack away at them. Whirling axe is a different matter..just best to run as fast as you can..sad that a warrior has to run from the stealth class in this game but anet doesn’t seem in a hurry to change it.

My main is an 80 warrior that also uses defektive’s build (everything the same except I use bull’s rush instead of fear me) but I also alt a thief in spvp
The fact that you are getting hit by backstab is probably the problem. As soon as the thief goes invis you need to run away for 2-3 seconds then dodge, or use aoe knockback. Many thieves use shadow refuge to set up backstab, if they stay in the small circle they cast they can stay invis for as long as 10 seconds, but they will come un-invis in ~2 seconds if they step out, so if you see the thief go invis with the house symbol above his head, step out of that circle asap. Many other thieves will immobilize you first, so when you see a thief you should have your finger ready on shake it off.
And as you probably know heartseeker does more damage the lower hp you are, getting particularly dangerous 50% and below, so keep yourself healed with shouts and with adrenaline surge when you have full adrenaline, and CC the kitten out of the thief. When I get bull’s rush → knockback → earthshaker → hammer 5 → mace 5 the thief is usually almost dead or running away very quickly, and even if 1 or 2 cc misses or they stunbreak you still have good control. Maybe if you post your build we could see if there are any weak spots in it (for example, do you use spiked armor?)

You should also remember that thieves running this build are also most likely running the traits that heal them when they do damage, and heal them when they use initiative, and using sigils that give them 50% of their endurance when they weapon swap along with a trait that gives initiative on weapon swap, as well as a trait that gives vigor for a good amount of time when they steal. At least I do. I trash most guardians on this build, as all the initiative allows you to keep stacking bleeds, and you have a lot of dodges (did i mention the trait that drops caltrops when you dodge and the one that gives you might when you dodge?? even more bleeds + damage)..necros actually give me more trouble than guardians on this thief.
That being said, the weakness in this build is it doesn’t have much condition removal, and if the thief is using a second set of dual daggers to gain endurance on weapon swap then it doesn’t have range either. Beyond that, the only way you can be safe is to play as a team, because you won’t beat a good thief if you’re alone and roaming.

Great match-up guys, had a fun time.
Just one thing that kind of irked me though. Why does the guild VR from SoR feel it’s OK to spam borderlands on the Yak’s Bend server in an attempt to poach players? Thanks for wasting one of our WvW slots.

Clones won’t do anything if you beat on them. I’ve never used longbows on them before, because that basically means you are trading longbow for another set of weapons since you can’t switch during the fight. Because of how often the mesmer teleports the clones can be all over the place as well, not just crowded together in one spot.

Best thing to do is play a mesmer in sPvP.
Barring that, kill their purple phantasms first (they are squishy), use ctrl T to target the mesmer and stack some bleeds on them (easy to see the real mesmer when the bleed numbers are popping off of them), and do what you gotta do. The fact is all classes have trouble with mesmers, especially the well-played ones, so don’t feel bad if they are making you eat dirt constantly. Quite a few builds can teleport a good distance away, so you will need the trait that makes your longbow have 1200 range, or you’ll need a rifle. Mesmers don’t do a lot of damage on their own, and most don’t have a lot of condition removals on low cd.

After playing a runemaster and healer for years in DAoC I was ready for something more in-your-face, and the fact that a warrior can be good at both melee and ranged I think is what really lured me into the class and eased the transition. I really don’t find the mesmer more complicated than a warrior, in fact it’s much easier to play my mesmer, but in the end you are all just pressing buttons in front of a screen, so I believe the class is what you make of it and what is fun for you.

I agree thieves need to be toned down a little, they arguably have more survivability than any class due to their stealth mechanics while also doing more damage than any class and I doubt that’s intended.
I will have to re-evaluate my WvW experience when I face better servers then. I guess there are advantages to being on a low ranked server!

There seems to be a lot of theorycrafting in this thread, along the lines of IF the warrior runs into competent players, then blahblahblah he will die.
But this isn’t tpvp, this is WvW. Unless you are on the top 6-7 WvW servers, most of the people you face in WvW probably won’t even be level 80 (at least that is my experience on Yak’s Bend). You have to see what the reality of the situation is, versus what it could be. I run hammer + axe/mace or hammer + rifle in WvW and do fine. You can call it “not viable” if you wish but that doesn’t change anything.

I concur. I was able to buy 3-4 pieces of karma gear (42,000 a piece) in the time I was barely able to afford 1 piece of invader gear. The money from WvW let me buy another piece as well. Badges are the slowest way, so perhaps invader’s gear should get some kind of boost.

Getting downed in water as a warrior, then going into vengeance, then getting downed while in vengeance, and going into vengeance again, ad infitum. For some reason sometimes when vengeance runs out in water it doesn’t kill you, just makes it so you have to surface again, which lets you pop vengeance once more.

Just so you know, both swap hands and the trait that makes you run faster when wielding melee weapons in the discipline line are broken. Some of those points may be better spent in defense until they are fixed but that’s up to you. For example 15 in defense would give you regen, and you could get Turtle Defense (+200 toughess when crippled etc.) for the 10 trait. Also I’m not really sure how useful Dolyak Signet actually is. Consider shake it off! for condition removal or the endurance regen signet which cures all conditions when activated.
In any case it’s not the end of the world, if you feel you are too squishy then put some superior soldier runes on your armor, or anything that gives toughness/vit (in your case you should prioritize toughness since just above 1000 is pretty close to base).
Just my opinions! Experiment and see what works for you

Don’t have a picture but Yak’s is in lead right now with Shiverpeaks in 2nd and Sanctum 3rd. The gap between all positions is very small though, and each team has 1 orb (the one yak’s bend had just disappeared actually, who knows where it went).

I don’t think you need any points at all in discipline for a ranged build (the most useful benefits in that line are actually broken), you’d be much better served taking those 25 points and putting 10 in strength for berserker’s power, and 10 in tactics for leg specialist (turns all your cripples into 1 second immobilizes, in this case your rifle #2 skill). The last 5 you can throw into defense. 10/30/20/10/0. Try it and see if you like it. Also, if you are just going to be using rifle as your main, then use sword/warhorn as your offhand set. The sword allows you to leap away from enemies, and the warhorn gives you speed + it will remove snares/immobilizes, so you’ll have a much better chance to get away.
As for stat equipment, that’s up to you. I say for rifle as your main you want to keep your base chance to crit at around 60% (with signet or rage/for great justice this will be around 80ish%).

Are you joking?? If there’s one place warrior shines it’s in WvW zergs. They have the highest health/armor in the game, and have access to both aoe and single target ranged damage. If your warrior dies in three seconds, your ranger will die in one second.
Advice: Levels make a very large difference in WvW. And any class who gets focus fired by a zerg is going down in 2-3 seconds, nothing will keep them alive. Don’t be in a position where you are the target that’s going to show up when the enemy team is smashing the tab key.

I tried out a mesmer today too in sPvP. First time ever playing one. Spent 5 minutes finding a decent build on the forum (20/25/20/0/0 staff + sword/pistol), 5 minutes testing attack combos on robots in mists with said build, and then I proceeded to join sPvP games and completely faceroll every class I came across except other mesmers. This was 10 minutes after my first ever having played a mesmer. Clearly we’ve made a mistake about the easy to play easy to master class, it’s definitely not the warrior. Jon said mesmers are being looked at, I’ll be anxiously awaiting to see what (if anything) happens to them and to warriors.
Forgot to mention for full disclosure, until I rolled this mesmer today I played a warrior exclusively, lvl 80 and very active in spvp /wvw.

EVE. Yes, I like that game. Again, subscriptions are “stopping” me. And I wasn’t asking for advice, I was just telling developers what I think and how I feel like. My money is the same as yours, and so are our rights to have an opinion of the product we paid for.
Raap, yeah, I knew that but I was hoping that it would change my mind once I got to play it. And yes I agree that moderators can be too strict sometimes here.
$15/mo is a lot to some people, not a lot to others, but compared to other things you could do to entertain yourself it is still pretty cheap. Especially if you really feel EVE or TSW is the right game to be playing, and can keep you hooked for awhile, I wouldn’t begrudge a monthly fee. And as someone (was that you?) mentioned, there may be more incentive for continual development in games with monthly fees.

As some people have mentioned, grouping is much more prevalent in MMOs where 9/10 classes are forced to group..ok well virtually none anymore (maybe EVE), but EQ back in the day, and DAoC for RvR. It depends on the MMO really. I never joined a group in UO, which was quite a bit before EQ/DAoC, hell a grouping system didn’t even exist for years in that game.
The problem nowadays is you don’t need a group. Do you think people enjoyed looking for groups for hours in EQ1?? No, they did it because they had to, but they met amazing people along the way in the process, which I daresay made the experience more fulfilling than if they had just soloed their way to the top.
Add in the fact that certain MMOs led to an influx of a lot of undesirables into the genre, and the free-to-play model opening it up to a demographic that doesn’t have credit cards..of course no one wants to spend hours looking for groups anymore, but it seems MMOs completely skipped the middle ground between “must have a group” and “don’t need a group for 95% of content”

It should also be mentioned that I believe (someone else can confirm) that endure and defy pain do not cancel the damage of any conditions that are on you. So while you may be invulnerable to any new attacks, if you have a stack of bleeds they will still be hitting you. It’s the duration of defy pain that turns me off though.

I agree, PvE is not challenging in the slightest, especially when compared with GW1. This is unfortunately the direction that MMOs are taking, and have been taking for awhile. PvE in MMOs use to actual pose problems- problems which required teamwork and communication. I find WvW and sPvP to be a challenge though, under certain conditions. For example, running small-man groups in WvW, or a competent group facing a competent group in sPvP (I had a 500-495 match last night, extremely intense). Yet even in games that put a lot of focus on PvP, the majority of the people are still interested in PvE. I am a DAoC vet and even on DAoC there were people who didn’t even touch RvR (when there were a lot more subscribers Gareth was extremely popular as well) so I think PvE is the real backbone of any MMO. Even hardcore PvPers want a break sometimes where they can relax and PvE, but that doesn’t mean PvE shouldn’t be a challenge at all.
So I agree with the OP. Please add more challenges in the game, you don’t even have to make the game harder, just add more encounters or situations where the possibility of failure is real and has consequence, so people who actually like a challenge can have one, and those who aren’t in the mood for a challenge can sit back and hit 1 3 5 3 1 2 4 3 1 2.

Rifle has a range of 1200, with the Kill Shot (burst) having a range of 1500. Bow has a range of 1200 if you put 10 points into tactics, which also gives you a 1 second immobilize on any crippling move you use. Use the 1 sec immobilize, and switch to longer bow range in keep defense/sieging.
