No 3rd party meters, no 3rd party add-ons, no overlays or anything besides Task Manager, normal windows OS (with wuauserv/windos update manually stopped in services) and Avast doing it’s background thing (but with game mode on so it was def allowing everything to connect through.)
Since the problem stopped happening on VB once I turned my video and sound settings down to potato, it’s something there. And either something from the area (visual, music, sfx) or something from the players (fancy armor/weapon graphics or kits or toys). Something that’s never triggered my system before.
But tonight I’m going to experiment on it, sick or not. I’ll update here because, kitten it’s quirky to have something like this persist thru multiple PC reboots when nothing else has happened to it (and I’m sure nothing has). If I can figure out what setting/s tweaked 1 at a time are setting it off, I can at least narrow it down in my bug report.
I did submit an in-game bug report though, but not a support ticket since I was able to regain access to my characters, and I can live without VB for a while. I know the problem didn’t happen when my characters were in Ember Bay, so it’s not a strictly-new-maps thing.
I’ll update here.
- – - — -- — – - -
Just a long shot here: if you were in an instance, it won’t trigger until you leave that instance.
- – - — -- — – - -
Rebooting the entire system didn’t help it either.
I was only able to un-stuck my characters by turning everything down to the lowest/off setting, making the game look worse than WoW (ewwwww), but it stopped the crashing at least long enough to teleport my 2 characters out.
I’ll try experimenting tomorrow night and see when it kicks again, I don’t have the mental capacity to even think of trying tonight. I was only able to read part of the data it was sending with the crash report, and it mentioned unable to read a specific part of memory. I wasn’t able to copy or screencap, it crashed completely a second later. I can confirm that my CPU (i7-2700k quad@3.50GHz) wasn’t being over-exerted or overheating, was threading about as well as it ever does with GW2 (64 bit), and my RAM was still showing as being used normally (32GB total), and Avast wasn’t catching it, and my net was decent.
This was not my first venture into a high population VB map, so if it was something with my vis settings, what changed or was added to start causing a mem crash?
- – - — -- — – - -
This is repeatedly happening despite multiple repairs.
- – - — -- — – - -
(edited by quacthulhu.2546)
No matter that day/night phase or what character or what location, every time I try to log in with a character in VB, the game crashes.
I restart, log back in, load back up, and it crashes immediately. It won’t even let me fill out the crash report.
I can’t get to any of my characters or their inventories while they’re stuck in VB.
I’ve never had this problem happen more than thru a couple tries on certain high-pop maps before (Lions Arch being the usual suspect). Characters logged off on other maps are fine, but the moment they move into VB I’m risking another crash and inaccessibility. And I haven’t played much in a few days.
- – - — -- — – - -
(edited by quacthulhu.2546)
I now have 2 characters who I can’t load in with, because the entire game crashes when I try to load in with them. One I logged out in Tribulation Rift last night, my main character. The other I just now ported into Dredgehaunt and walked her south to Tribulation Rift and the game crashed immediately as I got within viewing distance of the Rift itself.
Nothing has changed on my computer since last night. Nothing. This has never happened before this persistently.

Invisible wall after the one-way exit door of Tears of Itlaocol in Caledon Forest

- – - — -- — – - -
We call that the “action goiter”
- – - — -- — – - -
The Programmer’s link only covers the hero points “missing” from leveling at that range.
Which hero challenges aren’t rewarding you hero points? Are they ones that drop an item into your inventory that you then have to use? Are they Commune types? or are they Fight types? When you try them, are they being marked as “Hero Point Earned” on your map?
The only other types are the “go thru the dialog” type, some require paying attention.
Also note, Mastery points are not the same as Hero points. A character below level 80 doesn’t contribute XP towards your selected in-progress mastery track, they earn XP to their own level 80 and ~then~ start contributing to mastery track progress.
- – - — -- — – - -
At the end of the Tears of Itlaocol mini-dungeon in Caledon Forest, after exiting the treasure room (a one-way door, btw), there is now an invisible wall blocking everyone from walking back into the rest of the map. It’s a trap point, only able to teleport out.
Erecting the invisible wall stopped no one from gliding/cheesing to the end of the mini-dungeon, as the door at the back of the treasure room didn’t allow people to enter back in, and there were no holes to get around it.

… Each map will take you less than an hour to complete.
I’m sorry I have to interject here.. Less than an hour for a HoT map? Only with a zerg to run with, or at least a good dependable party. Or drugs.

i wish i could get more
get 20+ chars and try different styles for everyone and then come back and say you get too many transmutation stones
Heck, just try it with 9 characters.

See if it persists after the daily reset, but i’d chalk it up to an instance bug.

here, I took a screen shot of the latest crash.
uhhh, I jumped off the cliff above the small pool of water into that pool of water in dry top, then walked out of the water, then crash
I used to get that when I played Age of Conan (years ago). It was my video card and PSU.

You could just rename Gw2-64.exe to Gw2.exe. It doesn’t actually matter what you name it.
But I don’t want to replace it.
- – - — -- — – - -
I also can’t get Overwolf (anything that worked fine with the 32-bit client) to work right in the 64-bit client. It doesn’t lay over the game. I don’t know if it’s GW2’s fault or Overwolf’s.
I’m running both versions with the same settings, Windowed Fullscreen
Rename gw2-64.exe to gw2.exe
You can rename the old 32-bit version before to something else to have a backup.
Except I intend to keep both, until it’s out of beta at least.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/support/Overwolf-and-the-64-bit-client is where I put my fix.
- – - — -- — – - -
Alright, since Overwolf was not working properly with the 64-bit client (not overlaying), I looked into and determined that it was because the 64-bit client game (different exe name, so it defines it as a separate game) was not on Overwolf’s supported game list. This list is located in you AppData folder, and is in xml format. To try to work around this issue (because the 64b client is still in beta, so it is reasonable to assume that Overwolf won’t add it to their list yet), I roughly edited the GamesList xml file. This likely isn’t a simple solution for everyone, and it’s not perfect (more on that later), but it at least overlays the apps. Always make a back-up copy of your files before you start tinkering with them.
1. First, find your AppData. Locate localappdata/overwolf by plugging it into your Start run/search bar (I don’t know what the Mac equivalent of this is)
2. Locate the GamesList.(some numbers here).xml file. Copy it, paste the copy somewhere you won’t lose it or accidentally edit it. Overwolf should automatically redownload the file if you delete it, it’s about 2.5 MB large, not too terrible if you screw up.
3. After you have made your safe copy, open the original file to edit. Open it in Notepad or some other simple text program.
4. Search for the term “gw2.exe”, or whatever variant you have the 32-bit client named as on your computer. If you don’t know how to look that up, you probably shouldn’t be editing xml. (Sorry, but truth.)
5. When you find that term in the xml file, you will see an entire section dedicated to it. It should look something (or exactly) like this:[pre] (EDIT: the code tag seems to have limits here)
[/pre]
6. Copy all of that ^
7. On the next line after that section, create a space and paste the ^ that you just copied. It should have the same spacing as the rest of the file.
8. Change the ID number by +1. My example: 78562
9. Change the LuancherNames string to the 64-bit client’s exe filename. My example: GW2-64.exe
10. Leave everything else the same. Save the file, and close it.
11. Run your attempt. Don’t leave something open that you can lose by system crashing (just in case). Start Overwolf first, then run the 64-bit client, and open the apps you normally would run on the 32-bit client. Check them all, this isn’t a foolproof method for “fixing” it. I’m no programmer.
Here is how my finished product appeared in the GamesList file (including preceding and subsequent partial sections)

I’m gonna +1 this and say that I’m bumping because the particle effects still need a slider (inb4 merged with other leading topic), but really I’m doing it because of your signature.

um, you can receive items in mail, not sure on gold though as I didn’t try it but I definitely received the armor and weapon set I sent myself.
So you can still receive but not send?
That’s not so hot then.
I send a friend of mine (who’s trying out the game on a free account) 2 gold to fund her characters, to make it less of a hassle, and she got it. I don’t know if she could send anything back though. Maybe only if the free account is on the paid account’s friend list? Whispers are limited like that, so maybe mail is too.

Dang, I was hoping I could pre-make the character before the next event. Thank you though. Although I can use the slots to start making a non-Rev character, however I didn’t see any through to the end. (Edit: and now that I’ve tried, I see that it’s just regular character creation despite clicking on a “Beta” character slot. I thought the placement meant “beta character only”, not “these slots are only here for beta.”)
- – - — -- — – - -
(edited by quacthulhu.2546)
I just pre-purchased HoT (was waiting for the release date and more details), and I have my beta character slots available. I know beta events aren’t round-the-clock, but can’t I just create my beta-Rev now? Or does it block it out because character creation completion (say that 3 times fast) ends with game start/load-up?
Or am I missing something/there’s a delay for permissions?

Norn lady for me, because I already have a Guardian Charr and a Warrior Sylvari, the only other heavy armor skins I like are Norn. I kinda like Asura heavy but it feels so silly to me, those little gnometrolls being tanks…

Overwolf is good, but does take up extra RAM. The free app in it’s store is called “Pocket Knife” and it was one of the winners/finalists in the GW2 app contest (and is 100% allowed, it’s not giving any bonuses that couldn’t be found by alt-tabbing out to a wiki)

Get a rare dye from the Zephyrite swatches, those aren’t account bound. Sell them.

When I had this problem about a month ago, it was because the address on my credit card spelled my street name with a space (fictitious example: Wood Worm instead of Woodworm), and that was holding up the entire process even though the proper spelling was without the space.
So, double check that, use it exactly how it’s written on your card/bank statement or online statement/settings.
Sometimes the system is just down for a little bit, though. A week long outage has not happened recently.
- – - — -- — – - -
And today it’s back to working correctly.
So, it’s a randomly reoccurring bug where the initial control panel does not appear ever, and the Unnamed “light sources” could not be targeted for attack at all (they conned as Inspectable)
- – - — -- — – - -
(edited by quacthulhu.2546)
crackling sounds are usually not good, and tend to be from interference or some sort of grounding issue. Double check that your separate sound card is properly installed, take some canned air and dust the heck out of your internals (even if you clean regularly already), check that the connections of the sound ports on the side of your motherboard aren’t loosened from use/cord movements. If there’s some sort of short it might explain the sound drop combined with FPS drop.

holy thread resurrection batman!
but yeah I’m having this problem now, again. Same as I did some 1.5 years ago when I last tried it and got kittened that it’s bugged. the posts can’t be attacked, they con as Interactable but won’t be interacted with.
Edit: oh and the console to input the commands into seems to be gone. Just gone.

Can we just get the Gems equivalent of a character slot??? I’m one of the few vets who doesn’t need a character slot (although I’m glad they broke down a bit and soothed the majority of vets’ souls by tossing that in).
Please make this an option. You get more flies with honey than a sheet of baklava.

HoT Price Feedback + Base game included [merged]
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: quacthulhu.2546
Wait for the price to go down over time, or an “upgrade only” version, or a “choice of base game or gems” concession.
If/When it doesn’t happen, then we have full authority to rage
- – - — -- — – - -
So basically what you are saying is, “What you paid for the game was your subscription until this point. It was ‘consumable’. You bought it, you used it, now it’s over and spent. If you want to keep getting new stuff, it’s time for your next subscription.”
Then Anet would be violating their own promise when they released the game years ago.
“No subscriptions ever”
- – - — -- — – - -
<snip>
..For previous players…The $50 price tag would be fine, if HoT was the size of a Nightfall-esque Xpac, in other words: almost an entire game’s worth of content. From what we’ve been told, it’s nowhere near that much.
..
<snip>Also Nightfall, you were given 2 character slots if you already owned any other campaign. It shows how Arenanet handled these things in the past vs. now.
I never even realized that. I got all the GW1 Xpacs at once when they were super cheap/old.
Honestly, I think Anet is playing the “squeeze the money from the impatient!” game right now. Putting up the strictest, most newbie-friendly plans at the full asking price, because there will always be people who leap onto that stuff. Anet has to make it’s profit, that’s fair, but I hope we get a “expansion only” cheaper version of these deals, or something else tossed in to make it worth the cost, likely further down the line. I don’t want to think Anet just turned ice-cold on us. I can expect a little money-grubbing from a company, any company, it’s capitalism, ta-da! I’ll only feel hurt if it stays this way without any concession.
and “hurt” veterans tend to stop spending money.

I would not buy this even if they offered the deluxe edition for the price of the standard one to existing players.
I must disagree. HoT + 4000 gems to spend as I like, for $50 would be perfect. I would be 100% behind that. (4000 gems cost $50 normally.)

HoT Price Feedback + Base game included [merged]
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: quacthulhu.2546
To clarify: $50 is the price of the expansion. We included the core game as a free bonus to make it easier for new players to get into it.
“You’re going to love this new used car, it’ll really give you a bang for your buck, and because I like you so much, I’ll throw the floor mats in for free. What do you say? Are you ready to drive out of here in your new used car today?”
- – - — -- — – - -
Nobody has to spend $10 for another character slot seeing as you can convert gold to gems and if a veteran players doesn’t have enough gold for one more character slot well not even sure what to say about that
So a big Kitten You to us “filthy casuals,” huh?
I never seen so much victim blaming as in this thread.
For previous players…The $50 price tag would be fine, if HoT was the size of a Nightfall-esque Xpac, in other words: almost an entire game’s worth of content. From what we’ve been told, it’s nowhere near that much.
The $50 price tag would be fine, if it held just a little more content than previously featured, and a character slot. HoT may have the extra meat on it’s bones, hidden by devs, but no character slot.
The $50 price tag is only an attractive deal to new players. Which is where the extra money is at anyway.
It’s not being greedy to expect the same value for the same price. “Including the core game as a freebie” is a base lie, the type I’ve heard sold better at used car lots. “I’ll just throw in the cost of floor mats and cleaning the windows for free because you’re such a nice guy.”
- – - — -- — – - -
Yeah I would get it too. I didn’t have to relog though. I just changed tabs on the Hero window, then went back to Dyes. Or closed & re-opened it. Happened in the PVP lobby btw. Can’t confirm elsewhere.
