Why are Raids 3 hours?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

savacli.8172

3 hours is a good average. Wing 1 and Wing 2 have a lot of filler events in between encounters while Wing 3’s only filler event can be sped up dramatically with portals. Wing 4 has a its biggest time loss due to getting Glenna up to the checkpoints, but we are only talking a few minutes. Otherwise, Wing 4 is back to back bosses.

3 hours also includes a bit of downtime for class changes or just breaks in general in between Wings for bio/water/snack breaks (“Let’s take a quick 5”). You also get some cushion for mistakes so that you can afford /gg’ing on bad starts, someone dc’s, or something similar like that.

I’m sure, optimally, a dream team would knock this all out somewhere between 1:15 – 1:30 at most.

About the only good idea I heard out of this was the ability to re-fight bosses. Sure, it’s a non-issue anyways as you can just have someone open a specific checkpoint in an instance for you, but it would be great to not have to rely on other folks and checking who has cleared what in a given week.

Nonetheless, still kind moot to award rewards in a training situation. If you are training the assumed reward is getting better at the instance so that you can tackle the real deal. Even then a ton of the current bosses are very straightforward and can indeed be done by anyone with Wing 4 being the most accessible to the general player base since you only need gliding to get to the platform.

PoF stat combos obtainable with Mag Shards?

If anything you’ll need to collect the materials (or buy them off of the TP) and then unlock the recipes for the new stats.

I get that Anet has to introduce some wall so that you have to have access to the expansion to finalize the gear. Otherwise players with only core/HoT purchases would be able to make the new stats without having bought the expansion.

Seeing how Mag shards were introduced in HoT I would assume you’ll need “Desert Shards” in order to buy items from any new Raids introduced in PoF. Still, you can buy the boxes from the current raid vendor using Mag shards and just toilet the stats once you get the new inscriptions/insignias from PoF.

fractals really suck compared to dungeons

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

savacli.8172

I’m pretty sure OP is trying to troll us here. But anyways…

Dungeons were introduced when the game initially launched. The biggest issue is that the Dungeon Dev Team was disbanded shortly after launch. So, other than the occasional bug-fixes there’s not been a whole lot of attention that was given to that content from the beginning. There’s been a bit of back an forth on Dungeon rewards, but to date they are still a solid choice for newcomers to get exotic. The gold you get from Dungeons isn’t too bad either, but the rewards are nowhere as generous as they used to be.

As far as difficulty is concerned Dungeons are still balanced around core classes and haven’t been normalized to adopt to the power creep that was introduced by the first expansion. Thus, dungeons seem very very easy if you have a geared Elite Class but will still seem somewhat difficult if you have a developing core class (lacking gear) since that’s the audience dungeons are designed to be a challenge too. The boss/puzzle mechanics may seem difficult at first but, then again, everything looks difficult at first. Sure, you may have more to evade/block in melee, but I can’t really think of a boss off the topic of my head that is “ranged-only”. To be blunt there’s really no need “to know your class” with dungeons if you run an Elite. I’m only half joking when I say I can walk into a Dungeon Boss with a Druid and auto-attack while I go grab a snack from the kitchen and come back to find that the boss died. So if you find Dungeons to be difficult I would have to say you are either running a core class or just haven’t experienced the rest of the game

Fractals are a new beast altogether. They’re more of a progression system that does indeed emphasis co-op rather than solo-play vs Dungeon just auto-scale to 5 players but don’t necessarily require them (aside from Paths like CoE or CoF p2). Fractals are on a scaling system from 1 to 100. At scale 1, the content feels a lot like Infantile Mode: mobs hit for less, bosses don’t have as much HP, and some puzzles require less people to complete. Though the higher you go you start to see higher numbers and puzzles requiring more coordinated people. Furthermore, fractals are broken up into tier: T1-T4 to help divide the noticeable jump in difficulty.

If I’m being honest, OP’s behavior is typical for someone who’s in T1’s. As in, I see players struggle way more in T1’s than I do in T4’s because players in lower tiers simply are not familiar with the mechanics. Folks in T4 generally have an easier time simply because the people in that group have more exposure to the mechanics. T1-T3 are noticibly bumpier because players are still learning mechanics; no one goes back to previous tiers unless there’s something they need from there such as an achievement or are helping out a buddy.

The loot in T1 is indeed bad, doubly so if you don’t have the Masteries for the extra loot. T4, on the other hand, is a cash cow. You can get 10-15 gold from encryption loot in addition to drops from enemies. On top of that the chances for ascended gear drops is high (more so for trinkets, less so on weapons/armor). That, and fractals dailies take no more than 30 mins on average. On top of that there are T4 exclusive challenges that award additional gold and loot that are also dailies. Granted, Fractals do have a dev team so fractals are constantly being polished and see QoL changes to make sure they stay current with the game.

Also, this game is indeed casual friendly. Around 4 years ago I got my ele his first set of gear, and the gear is not only viable but also optimal in today’s era. All in all, the rewards and difficulty are just right. Dungeons are challenging for newer players but provide rewards to help get gear. Fractals are progressively more difficult but award better loot/gear the higher you go up in the ranks. Then there’s raids…..but that’s another thread in the making.

Let me spin it this way…

I want the new WvW backpack. I have barely no rank, I’m not in a WvW guild, and I haven’t looked up any guides/videos on what builds to run let alone how to play the content. It’s not fair that I have to spend all that time in WvW completing reward tracks and leveing up my rank. I don’t spend a lot of time online. Why can’t I just use all the badges of honor I have stocked up and buy it outright?? It’s not fair that the backpack isn’t catered to a WvW casual like me!!!

Can’t say I notice the clipping on some of my backpieces because they are floaty in nature, but it was super obvious to see the floating issue on things like shields. The horn on the back just makes things really awkward not only with back stowed equipment, but also does horrors for certain hairstyles. Silly, I know, but that’s just my two copper on the whole thing.

Even still, we’re talking Thief here. Them along with Ele’s should have the highest damage output. Granted they’ll be the first ones to drop to the ground after a missed green or a Haduken to the face.

Right, except ele doesn’t do its dps by using 2 weapon skills and a dodge.

No they don’t, but I don’t see Thieves offering passive Protection, stun breaks, rebounds, and healing….well, I guess there’s skelk venom. So being able to offer group support while still having high damage potential (albeit at the cost of having an actual rotation)? I’ll take it.

Edit: My point being that Thieves are Ele’s were introduced into the game as the ones being top damage dealers in contrast to something like Guardian that was introduced as more of a defensive archtype. Though Daredevil further advanced Thief’s damage role while Tempest shifted Ele into more of a support role (or at least has more potential to be). So seeing a Daredevil produce high numbers with something as simple as auto-attack and dodge? I can’t say I’m too surprised at that.

I have nothing against skill requirement to get anything. However, why only through raid, a niche content? And why couldn’t they have been a lot more transparent about it when advertising it?

Raids niche is the fact that its challenging content…

They have been 100% clear that legendary armor will require raiding since its announcement before HoT launch. It has also been all over the forums, reddit, Dulfy, MMOgamer, etc for the past 18 months.

This!

What I find most disturbing and hilarious at once is that there was some sort of crowd (and it’s still here – the same people) wanting to have the legendary armor way before any function & design was announced.
Seems to me like “they bring something and no matter what it is, I have to have it” but after noticing you have to do something you don’t like, this crowd starts to complain.
Horrible, reminds me of the word “Schmarotzer” in german language, dunno the exact translation, “cadger” maybe.

For me the legendary PvP backpack is inaccesssible as hell for only one reason: I don’t like to play PvP modes any longer (after having played one of the top MOBA’s over a certain time).
But I still have the option to do so. I just have to decide: Do I need it so badly – then I’ll give it a try and go to PvP or not. The same is for other people with raids. I think that’s a fair choice for everybody!

/raises hand

Guilty on the " have to have it". I mean, the armors look okay, and I’m sure they’ll have neat animations, but I’m a PvE completionist and armor is on my to-do list. Had a been a PvP/WvW guy I probably wouldn’t have batted an eye at the new armors.

Also guilty on the PvP backpiece. I weighed my want to have it vs the time/effort needed go through the achievement/matches, and I decided I didn’t want it that badly. Note that, I couldn’t care less for the functionality of it, I just wanted the backpiece because of the fiery winged look.

Um no, these are numbers from actual raid scenarios where condi thief pulls higher numbers due to combo fields.

No kitten, lol. Maybe you should read your own quotes where they’re pointing out “overseer” as the boss (AKA: DPS golem boss).

Maybe we should nerf condition reaper too while we’re at it. I was getting 36k on Deimos last week. That number is so scary and big compared to those other normal classes, it obviously needs a shave.

I’ve seen it do that on gorseval and samarog too, this isn’t isolated to golems and golem type bosses but keep being passive aggressive and declaring high numbers on bosses with mechanics where they take massively increased damage at times.

Gorsy – doesn’t move if you no-updraft
Sam – if every stays on the boss, doesn’t move as well

I’ll start calling the build OP once I see the numbers reach that high on things like Matthias or VG in the final phases. Even still, we’re talking Thief here. Them along with Ele’s should have the highest damage output. Granted they’ll be the first ones to drop to the ground after a missed green or a Haduken to the face.

In fact if you actually stopped and thought about it why would any company make a raid you run once for the best stuff in the game?

Maybe because the best stuff in the game should not be so strongly tied to something that is a side content.

The concept of doing that is really poor and that’s even if you’ve never done a raid before, those that have done raids before know they’re designed to be rerun multiple times to get gear.

That’s the concept of raids from other games, that GW2 was supposed to distance itself from. The raids in GW2 were not supposed to be a content you farm for gear. They were supposed to be a challenge for a small number of people that thought the rest of the game was too easy for them.

And that is exactly what they got. The people that have 500+ LI haven’t done it for the gear that they were promised almost 2 years ago…

In all fairness, we were given the outline of the armor recipe loooong ago (based on the wiki, the recipe data was entered around June 2016. ). So players knew the exact items and their quantities needed for the final mystic forge toss-in. So outside of achievements and collections players knew there was no reason to go beyond 150 LI unless they were going for multiple sets.

An LI is the same whether it be from Escort or be it from Deimos. So, if you started this very moment, you can spend upward of 3 years getting 1 LI a week from escort, or you can do more bosses and get your 150 LI’s in just under 3 months….you know, not that raids have been out for over a year or anything like that. Though you would eventually have to work on the collection items as well which requires you to beat each boss at least once.

25 bleeds looks daunting but it is the weakest damaging condition and requires large stacks to even approach the damage of other conditions such as burning and torment.

Depending on the class it’s roughly about 3 stacks of bleeding = 1 burn. So something like condi rangers/warriors/ele’s who peak their burn caps around 30 equate to that of a Necro pushing out just under 100 bleeds (very rough numbers since malice scaling on conditions goes from 0.05 – 0.155)

Does it give any incentive to master the hard class?

The incentive to master the hard class is because you enjoy the hard class.

Right, and the peer pressure to not weigh your group down? 6-8k or more dps deficit means longer fights. Longer fights mean more mistakes, more mistakes mean even more dps lost. You can enjoy your harder class in the open world just as well, can’t you?

I mean, that’s really up to the squad. If you signed up for a clearing group you know very well going into it that the squad is looking for consistency. Regardless of the class and build, they’re looking for tried and true. Feeling like experimenting with a new class or build? Well that’s up to the squad lead, otherwise you’re looking at experimenting on your own.

It’s a game after all. Some players want a challenge, others subscribe to the “build of the month”, while other couldn’t care less about what’s meta and what isn’t and would much rather go off and do their own thing.

While Staff DD can easily out-perform most classes that are played at a mediocre level…..it’s so boring. So yeah, I’d much rather take condi thief that is more engaging because anything is better than just auto-attacking. Can’t DPS if I fall asleep on my keyboard

Outside of a thief, catching up to any other class is nowhere near as difficult as OP makes it sound. Sure, every class has mobility/teleportation skills, but the majority of classes are restricted in their mobility due to their cooldowns.

Thieves aren’t as subject to this because they have a huge rollout of teleportation skills both of their weapons and utility skills, rightfully so since they’re the Rogue/Assassin of the game.

Revs realistically only have access to their mobility skills while in Shiro so if you can bump them out of that legend (pressure them into swapping to a more defensive legend) they’re yours for the beating.

Ele? Wait for the guy to burn his high coolowns and then go ham on the guy

Guard has a handful of unrestricted teleports, but a few of their teleports require a target.

Ranger has always been a ranged nuisance (pun not intended) so I don’t ever expect to bring him into melee since he’ll either keep his distance or cc/impede me to the point where he can just walk away from the fight.

Mesmers? Outside of Blink, Staff 2, and Sword 3, I’m coming to a blank on how these guys can have high mobility. If anything they’re just hiding behind their stealth and clone bomb gimmicks. That, and what Mesmer doesn’t have a safety portal?

How does a Warrior fight range? Well for one, you gotta realize that they were meant to be a melee-excelling class so you’re already putting yourself at a disadvantage. Second, just grab a rifle. If you wanna use mobility skills to close the gap and get the advantage, you gotta realize you have to lock down your opponent. Otherwise, they’ll just poof and now you’re back to eating damage and having blown a mobility cooldown.

Though with the way the skill is now, it’s harder to counter than the last iteration of Chill damage before it was totally changed. Instead of 1 condition to clear, you have 2 to mitigate along with the other cover conditions flying around. That’s for sure.

The rework to the trait was over a year ago so if players are caught of guard by this then it’s more on then for not keeping up with the class. Plus, even before the trait change it was extremely common (if not unavoidable) to have both bleed and chill on you when encountering a necro, so there’s no surprise there. The only difference nowadays being that you only have one damaging condition to worry about rather than two now (since chill no longer does damage over time). On top of that Necro’s have always been known to overwhelm you with conditions so there’s always been the challenge of praying to the Six that your condi cleanse is timed to cleared the right. conditions.

Bleeds are out of control

in Necromancer

Posted by: savacli.8172

savacli.8172

Honestly, the trait is fine as it is since the “op-ness” lies on landing all your chills which requires a bit of setup. More so when trying to land all the whirls in a chill field. On the flipside you have something like a condi mesmer who can type /sit and peak between 60-70 bleeds while the necro has yet again lost out on their damage from accidentally whirling a water field instead of their chill field for the third time. Unless you’re running the “Frost gun” the chill/bleed stacks are anything but free.

Ultimately, what I’m getting at is insane bleeds stack from a single player isn’t anything new, and other classes have been doing that ever since condition stacks have been reworked.

Edit: If you have 10 condi clears and are still complaining against the rework on the trait? Then the trait rework is clearly not the issue…..especially since the trait didn’t even touch PvP, and I’m trying to see how Necro’s can consistently maximize the rework of the trait in WvW with all the field overlaps and “chickens with their heads cut off” to the point that you’re 10 condi clears have become compromised.

Edit 2: The Frost gun was disabled 7 days ago so that’s not even exploitable anymore

“Have to”? Again, goes back to what ype of group are you joining/looking to join. More causal/training groups are okay with only full exotic with the intent of getting ascended down the line. Your average groups may require certain amount of ascended gear (most notably trinkets and weapon at minimum).

It’s definitely to your advantage to get ascended gear but no point in making it if you’re not gonna make use of it if you’re group decides to slot you in a different role.

Consider an average player who can get 20k by autoattacking on a staff thief or struggle to hit 12k on ele. Don’t you think it hurst build and class diversity?

No, it doesn’t. A player who is not comfortable with a class will down, miss DPS regardless, and require a lot of carrying. If you’re comfortable with a class you’ll have more DPS windows and easily pull modest, comparable damage numbers without ever being a master at the class. I witness this frequently with extremely average players on every DPS class; they pull their 20k DPS numbers on whatever they’re most comfortable on, regardless of what that DPS class actually is.

Does it give any incentive to master the hard class?

The incentive to master the hard class is because you enjoy the hard class.

Personally, the class’s build difficulty is irrelevant to me. What’s more important to me is what class/build can I bring that will more consistently deliver high damage. Sometimes it’s condi Ranger, sometimes it’s Dagger ele, maybe Staff DD, or even just a condi Mesmer. It’s really just boils down to the encounter, and the most satisfying thing to witness is seeing your squad swap classes/build as you go through the various encounters.

I’ve poked around with condi thief but can’t say I’m comfortable enough with it yet to add it to my rotation. Engi? No thanks, I’ve tried and tried again, and I just can’t pull it off, and the demand of that build is so much that even playing it at a mediocre level drops its damage potential by quite a lot.

But that’s just my two copper on that discussion. Back on topic though: my thoughts on the condi thief class/build?

For one, I agree that it’s nice to see an alternative build published that isn’t just another Power sniper. Thematically I’ve always see rogue/assassin types to rely on poisons of sorts so seeing Thieves make use of venoms makes my inner DnD nerd happy. Play style-wise? Pretty straight forward but relies on allies being around to get the most mileage out of your venoms which isn’t an issue the majority of the time. As far as some people saying it’s too strong? I mean, Thieves are our rogue/assassin class so I would expect them to have one of the higher damage potentials out of all the classes.

Q: About 1st dungeon and classes.

in Players Helping Players

First Dungeon: Dungeons have been around since day 1 and a lot of folks just try to speed through it since there has been no mechanical change to the dungeons. As in the dungeons you see today were laid out almost identically on the first day the game came out. So, if you’re wanting a more slower pace run or with explanation you’ll want to join a group in LFG that lists that or create your own group (if you can) specifically asking for a walkthrough. No shame there, a lot of veterans don’t mind helping the newer folks since we were all once new to the game. Once you know what to look for you’ll be on your feet a lot more.

Based on your description I’m going to guess that you were doing the Ascalonian Catacombs dungeon in what’s called Explorable mode (the spider boss gives it away). As such, that dungeon is design for a level 35 character. Given that you’re level 30 and probably don’t have the best gear? No surprise you got trucked. Players beyond level 35 get their stats and gear scaled back to 35, but they retain access to their skills and Specializations/traits. So they have more tools to work with and slightly higher stats even after being scaled.

Re: class selection? I’ll start off by saying that you’re kinda limited in your customization until you hit 80 as you’re locked out of certain traits and skills until then. Even more so if you’re 80 but haven’t unlocked your Elite Spec. With that in mind…

Core Necros only have access to Staff until you unlock Reaper. Staff is an okay ranged weapon that does pretty well with Power scaling, but is awkward to use due to marks causing conditions. Thus, staff isn’t really a good power weapon nor a great condi weapon. Greatsword is mostly Power based, but with a handful of traits can also be used as a condi weapon. For the most part you’ll want to learn being comfortable in melee range if you plan to play PvE as a lot of boons/buffs you get from other party members have a small range, and it’s much easier to buff a team that’s clumped together rather than trying to hit everyone that’s spread out. Though for open world you can pew pew with staff or axe just fine.

Re: Ranger. One of my personal favorites. Great offensive buff-er when in “heal mode” but they are highly aggressive with damage when in a condi build. Power builds fall short in PvE compared to other classes though. Same advice as necro though, you’ll want to get used to being on the front lines even though you can range.

The cast time is 3/4s and the skill duration is an additional 3/4s. So all-in-all the skill takes 1.5s to fully cast and animate (plus whatever trailing aftercast animation it has). In the video OP was cut off during the cast time. Seeing how the skill when on a 10s cooldown (rather than a 3s interrupt cooldown) leads me to believe that OP also got poked by a Distracting Dagger vs any other interrupt.

It doesen’t take 1,5 sec to fully cast. I have timed it with use of recording software. No way that skill takes 5 sec to cast. You misunderstand what the tooltip says. The evande time isn’t additional time to the skill duration. That wouldn’t make any sense. The evade time is based on the skill itself.

You’re right, the skill doesn’t take 5 seconds to cast; like I said earlier the skill takes 3/4 of a second to cast and that’s where you got interrupted.

What I was getting at is the time it takes start to finish for that skill to complete. That’s from the moment you toggle the skill, the cast time unravels (you’re susecptible to interrupts here), the skill animates (evade frames occur here), and your character model resets back to its neutral state (what is called after-cast animation). That whole process takes about 1.5 seconds.

Burning Speed isn’t an insta-cast like Signet of Air or Arcane Shield are which means you’re not guaranteed to be able to pull it off each time you cast it. Simply put you got outmatched by a thief who landed his interrupt on you during your cast time (again, you got sniped by a Distracting Dagger since your skill went on a 10s interrupted cooldown). Feel free to report it as a bug, but even your own video points to everything working as listed.

And, regardless of where you fall on this, can you realistically with a straight face say anything has changed in the past 10 months other than a slight shift in the meta with the balance patch and the introduction of a few new bosses to fight?

Actually, yes.

With things like Arc and BGDM squads have actual data to work with rather than just being anecdotal. Whether you use it in a static or pug situation you can hone in on what’s your weakest link.

In a static setting this is huge since you can coach/tutor the struggling player or even go as far as class swapping. In a pug setting? Well you can now confirm whether your pug is a carry or whether he’s a hidden gem.

LI’s and Titles are great and all, but there’s no telling how a person came across those things. Chart them up on a meter? If that guy is dishing out his portion of DPS and is meeting the encounter mechanics, well, I couldn’t care less if said person has only a single LI.

Though like everything else in the game I’m sure there’s plenty of people that take things to an inappropriate level. I mean, just last night I heard about a training group where the Squad Comm was yelling as her DPS members because they were just 1k behind her damage. And they were only hovering around 10k dps for that encounter.

So what do I *NEED*?

First things first you need to get your AR to 150.

cough AR 150 is required for T4 fractals, so … it’s a goal, but it’s not “must do instantly.” It is entirely possible to gradually work up to that through the tiers, increasing your AR as you naturally get drops from playing the lower level fractals.

I stand corrected.

I can’t tell you the exact timing but I notice that if I farm in the early afternoon for one character (~4-6 hours before reset) I have to wait until after I wake up the next morning to see them again. So it feels like closer to 12 hours?

First things first you need to get your AR to 150. If you haven’t done so already the new Mastery system introduced by HoT has a Fractals Masteries one of which will unlock items in a vendor to add a third slot to your rings: base slot + infused + attuned (the new one). For the time being you can buy Tears potions to bump your AR by 10 – 15. there are also interactable Mistlocks within fractals themselves that add +10AR, but you lose the buff when you go down (acts like Tempest’s rebound the first time you would go down). However I wouldn’t rely on this as being a permanent boost seeing how easily you can lose it.

Mistlock potions are really good to have. My personal recommendation is the Mobility potion as you can get up to +25% movement speed and +50% endurance regen (perma vigor more-or-less). Once you unlock additional Fractal Masteries the Mobility potion will also add +15% Boon duration (assuming you’re right at 150 AR with 5 stacks of the Mobility potion).

Other than that? Slaying potions and nourishments give you an extra edge. But ultimately, it’s just practice until you get comfortable with the island’s encounters since some of them may have changed since you’ve been gone.

If you get once shot by the final boss in 100 CM its because you failed to do the mechanic.

Yes, in a perfect world, everyone would’ve already learn the mechanics and be able to execute them perfectly.

The one-shot is consistent; it’ll one shot everyone regardless of how tanky you are. Though I guess you could say it helps in the case that you are more likely to be on your feet when the time comes to complete the one-shot mechanic.

Some Constructive Feedback of Mallyx

in Revenant

Posted by: savacli.8172

savacli.8172

I mean this kinda goes back to the “incompleteness” of the class. As in, in its original iteration Mallyx was a full on condi manipulator. Similar to Necro, Mallyx had utility skills that self inflicted conditions and whose skill effects would scale (to an extent) depending on how many conditions you had on you at the time of casting the skill. On top of that you would steal condi’s from your allies. At that point you’re a ticking time bomb of condi’s hiding behind a thin wall of resistance. Then you toss in the Elite that would cause “mini epidemics” every 3 seconds to nearby enemies.

Keeping all that in mind, it made total sense to limit how many conditions a Mallyx rev could inflict since he would be more about manipulating them than generating them.

Buuuuuut, that all got scrapped, and it just looks like there wasn’t a proper rebalance pushed out in time to really compensate for the loss of the “manipulator role”.

Hey don’t joke about that one. That basically happened for a while with lots of new encounters all having un-reflectable projectiles because Anet didn’t know what to do with Wall of Reflection and Feedback.

I cheated on that one. I remember a list of Fractal instabilities in the making involved one where all projectiles had the unblockable descriptor.

i mean all these ( im refering to the abilities that affect allies) are dmg reduction, the way it should be none of these completely negates the dmg.

Gasp! Guys!! We totally missed the patch notes about how Aegis no longer negates damage it just works like Protection now. Blinding also only inflicts weakness instead of making the next attack miss! Also, Shield of Courage just creates a Light field instead of providing a continuous block. And Apparently, all projectiles are now unblockable and can’t be absorbed nor reflected!

Revenant still considered Meta?

The big issue here is that Rev is nowhere near the “Flavor of the Month” when it comes to raids simply because there are outclassed in every role: tanking, healing, damage dealing, boon distribution, buff distribution, etc. So, unfortunately, there’s a huge bias against Revs in that setting. Thus, anyone playing copy-pasta will immediately turn away that class.

Though in a Fractal setting? Quite the opposite. Revs are pretty well packaged as far as being able to give just a little bit of everything bundled into one class. It’s a really good class to have when pugging as you don’t really know what you’re gonna get comp-wise (unless you’re going for condi only). Though, that’s just my personal experience as in I know our damage output won’t go through the roof, but I know I can stand next to a rev and get some really good boons out of him.

Endure Pain, AED, Stone Signet, and Infuse Light all work against VG’s Green circle because that attack just does massive amounts of damage rather than insta-kill. Oddly enough those 4 skills work against things like Deimos’s Mind Crush or MAMA’s/Ensolyss’s Nightmare Devastation since they work the same way as in just dealing massive amounts of damage rather than outright killing you.

so your saying warrior ranger ele thief engineer etc all have a way to make 5 people immune to almost all boss attacks like vale guardians green circle burst? im honestly curious how thats done.

While not as clean:

Warrior and Ranger can both use Endure Pain and Stone Signet respectively and then follow up with an elite skill to resurrect up to 5 downed allies. Ranger can stack “Guard” with Protection boon for high damage reduction.

Ele (Tempest) can Rebound to counter death.

Engi (Scrapper) can use Bulwark Gyro on top of stacking Protection for huge damage mitigation. That, or core Engi can combo AED with Toss Elixir R similar to how Warrior and Ranger do.

Thief…umm…Resilience of Shadows? Yeah, I got nothing for that class.

Sure, all of the above don’t achieve the same effect as distortion, but they would achieve the goal of being able to withstand boss attacks other than true killshot attacks that not even distorts works on. Granted I don’t have to stack signets nor invest in certain traitlines (well, Tempest I guess is technically a traitline to get Rebound).

Ultimately, the core Guard class is one of the most solid defensive classes you can get:

  • Protection and Stability uptime
  • High availability of aegis skills
  • Access to personal/group blocking skills (different from aegis)
  • Warding skills
  • Projectile management
  • Condition cleanse
  • Moderate group healing (even without investment into traits)

Throw in the Dhunter Spec? Well, personally, that makes the class feel pretty powerful augmenting the class’s core defensive skills with the Elite Spec’s high Damage output capability. Overall, Guard feels like one of the more complete classes and hopefully the Purifier spec will open up either a healing focus or Condi focus (you know, purofy everything with holy fire).

inspiring distortion is a forced pick tho :/ for its respective traitline

Yes…..and? It’s not like that Spec is forced upon every Mesmer. Sure I get that it’s meta and players are gonna copy-pasta it, but otherwise my point still stands that Distortion is a self invulnerability until the Inspiring Distortion modifies the base behavior.

savacli.8172

That’s his point. Every class has ways to avoid mechanics and whatnot. So why is distortion a problem? Unless you also want to remove all invuln effects from the game at the same time, there isn’t any rationale behind changing distortion

distortion is not a self invul only tho and most of the invul other classes have are very limited

Except that Distortion is a self invulnerability. It’s not until you take Inspiring Distortion that it becomes an AoE effect, and even then your allies only get 1s of it (regardless of how much distortion you grant yourself), and it’s on a 5s cooldown. So, if you accidentally distort (such as just running through your rotation) you can’t reliably grant distortion to your allies. On top of that Distortion doesn’t even work on downed allies like an Aegis does. So you either have to burn your Well of Precognition to save your teammate or hope he doesn’t get killshot’d.

And true while invulnerability skills are limited (Ele has 3, Guard 1, Engi 1), other classes have a lot more reliable access to damage mitigation skills and have them in much larger quantities. In other words, a Mesmer actually has to invest into skills/traits to get high quantities of distortions while other classes get their defensive mechanisms for free.

Tbh i don’t feel 1 mechanic should negate so terrifying attacks and make mechanics of any fight meaningless.

In that case we’ll need to roll back:

  • Evades (from endurance and skills)
  • Blocks (from aegis and skills)
  • Stability (where encounter mechanics launch you off platforms)
  • Invulnerability skills
  • Stealth (since it breaks aggro)

Joking aside, Mesmer distortion is fine. Each class has a way to keep them in the fight. At the two extremes you have something like Necro/Warrior that are HP sponges vs Teefs that are ping-ponging evades back-to-back……..to-back-to-back-to-back…[one eternity later]….-to-back (I’m exaggerating here, I know).

Chaining distortions on yourself is fine, but like every other class it’s not free to use your defensive mechanic; it generally costs you slotting a skill, trait, or give up up-time on something (damage/boons, primarily).

As far as the timing being “too easy” for team distorts. Well, that depends on the player. Seeing how the game is geared towards more casually players a 1s window may actually be pretty tight. Yes, I realize that this is a case of #GetGud if you can’t nail the 1s team distort window but, then again, I recognize that the skill of the average gamer of GW2 will still find that window a challenge.

Other Power classes suffer from similar restrictions especially when it comes to up-time on the scholar bonus which is why condi is more favorable where the biggest issue there is making sure the boss doesn’t move out of condi fields.

Though there shoudn’t be much of an issue when fighting golem like bosses such as Gorsy and KC.

However, if you plan to do anything with a group (dungeons, fractals, etc)? You’ll want to check in with the other folks out of courtesy and let them know you’re bringing an incomplete class.

As much as everyone seems to say Guardian is in a good place, so many of the recent posts are asking for weapon redesigns or buffs.

Forum posts are a terrible gauge of the public opinion of “x”. It’s the classic Customer Service issue of how many people will go out of their way to fill out the survey at the bottom of the receipt when they have a good experience vs those who will immediately ask for a manager when their order/service was wrongly delivered. In short, the noisiest customers are generally going to be the ones that are unhappy as the happy customers have nothing to speak out towards.

Back on topic though…

I find that Guard is in a good place as in my expectation of the class was to be primarily a defensive buffer. The fact that DHunter adds DPS viable is icing on the cake. Though, I had no expectation even from the beginning for the class to be a tank or a healer. For me, Paladin-type classes always seem to play better in groups as they buff their team members rather than buffing themselves. Sure, they have some healing built-in, but nowhere near the capacity of more Cleric-type classes. Now, if Purifier (future leaked spec) will bring a more Cleric-like spec? I wouldn’t mind that at all.

Also, +5 on Rev needing love…..a lot of love.

Can’t tell you about about PvP, but Ele is still top tier in PvE.

All of its Power DPS variants (Dagger/Warhorn, Scepter/Warhorn, Staff) are much higher DPS than any other class when dealing with a Large hit-box targets (36k-38k). Though, Ele drops quite a bit on damage contribution when you’re up against targets with small/medium hit-boxes (~30.5k). Condi Tempest hits for just over 35k and has a dramatically simpler rotation than that of the current Condi king which is Engi. Magi Ele can trivialize most high pressure fights by camping Water and pushing out close to 2k heals/second (staff auto, soothing mist, regen).

So, I mean, if none of that is appealing to then I guess the class isn’t worth it to you.

Small Buff Suggestions for Rev

Buffing the class is only going to draw attention away from the core issues of the class, but I also don’t see the value in the suggested changes. Blast finishers on a rev are on really awkward weapons, and placing a finisher on One with Nature gives you access to an extra finisher every 25 seconds.

Sorry to sound blunt, but virtually any class is capable of that. Even a Warrior (the stereotypical heavy armor guy) eventually gets to a point where he get’s a reddish aura and shoots out fireballs when he swings his word.

This game is different from most MMO’s as every class is capable of filling every role in a team dynamic. Mileage tends to vary though depending on the game mode. E.G. I wouldn’t want my Elementalist to tank in a raid, but I will happily have him bunker a control point in PvP.

What would be more helpful for us to help you decide is the mechanics of what you are looking for in a class.

  • Damage: Direct direct or DoT’s (which we call conditions).
  • Support: The two major branches here: increase team members’ outgoing damage (offensive) or diminish incoming damage through damage mitigation and healing (Defensive)

Control is technically the third role and that’s all about keeping the enemies in line while your team wails on them.

Ultimately, I find that players generally pick their classes based on the mechanic the class revolves around.
