it’s quite ridiculous – I have 6 sets in my inventory at the moment… I have to visit the vendor every 5 minutes to dump drops…
While spirit weapons are now good enough for my purposes ( I never had a build around them ), it reinforces my main gripe.
If all of our skills are situational ( which I’m fine with ) – please let us be able to switch utilities that are on CD. ( the CD can be transferred to the new utility ).
The only thing I could comment on reading though was concerning the buff to Warrior banners, such as:
- Banner of Defense skill: Increased toughness and vitality granted to allies from 90 at level 80 to 170.
It’s a shame Strength In Numbers didn’t get a similar hike.
I kept track of the skills I used on the last 2 instances I ran:
TA:
- Stand Your Ground ( group stability – shout )
- Hallowed Ground ( group stability – shout )
- Hold the line ( group protection/regen )
- Judges Intervention ( stun break, teleport )
- Wall of Reflection
- Save Yourselves ( group condition purge, stun break )
- I switched my elite utility for Tomb of Wrath for the end boss
- I switched traits twice.
- I switched my offhand weapon a couple of times.
- + copious spamming of Virtues
Fractals ( Underwater, Dredge, Uncategorized, Jade ):
- Stand your ground
- Judges Intervention
- Wall of Reflection
- Purging Flames ( group condition removal, fire field )
- Shield of the Avenger ( Harpies, Old Tom, Raving Asura )
- Sanctuary ( Harpies )
- Hammer of Wisdom ( underwater )
- Sword of Justice ( underwater )
- Switched 2 hand weapons 3 times, single hand twice and offhand 3 times
- Switched traits 4 times
- + copious spamming of Virtues
I didn’t count the actual physic number of swaps I did, but pretty much between every “out of combat” period between encounters.
If I ran with the same weapons and skills all of the time, I think I’d die of boredom eventually and I’d be doing my group a great disservice.
Also in a PUG you need to be aware of what your party members are using, otherwise you’re just wasting cooldowns ( for instance you pop your reflect skill inside a mesmer’s feedback ). If there’s another guardian in the group who uses the hammer, I’ll probably switch to the greatsword as my main, and try not to lay down the same effects.
Admittedly, guardian is generally seen as a support class and there’s more pressure to use support skills than for other professions ( you’re more likely to get comments from your team if you’re not using a certain skill at a certain point ).

I’m guessing it will be something visually like GW1’s Ray of Judgment, but instead of inflicting holy damage and burning on enemies it will deal a 33% chance to fix the skill facts on up to 5 friendly targets ( not including yourself )
(edited by Tarsius.3170)
Oh nooo, how will I be able to bump thieves out of shadow refuge? Smaller cooldowns would be nice.

I’d like a “pull an ally to you” ability. A way of getting a guild to you if he’s over extended
That’s what I’ve always wanted Merciful Intervention to be. ( or at least a “pull downed ally to your location” )
I’m traited to give maximum dps and protection in downed state
You know you’ve been playing a guardian too long when you cut yourself accidentally and then wonder why rolling on the floor doesn’t help
Putting my pedantic helm on for a moment “Point Blank” means being within close enough range of a target so that you don’t have to compensate for the projectile losing height as it travels (ie if you aim directly at it, you hit it)… so a point blank shot could very likely be further than 900 ( at least for a gun or rifle )
Didn’t you get the memo? Guardians are “OK”
Anet October 29th Patch Live Stream“ All classes will be seeing major buffs: Warriors, Mesmers, Thieves, Rangers, Elementalists, Warriors, Engineers, Necromancers, Warriors and that other one…. the one with the blue bubble things…I forget the name. ”

After looking at it a bit, I’d like to see Strength in Numbers and Honorable Shield swap tiers.
That would put Strength in Numbers in the master tier, similar to Spotter and Empower Allies, while making the off-hand weapon trait for shields more accessible.
Would break 50% guardian WvW builds.
Or would that be “would break 1 build that’s used by 50% of WvW guardians”?
Well I think we’ve got quite a few cool roaming skills, but they’re spread over half a dozen different weapons and utility categories. For instance, on a meditation build I find I’m always always giving up a third meditation for a consecration, shout or signet. I must choose between CC or mobility.
You can spec to be a good counter to most professions, but not to be effective against all professions. ( to be honest that’s probably how the game should be ).

A set of live streams focussing on each profession would be nice, but:
Live stream: state of the warrior [2:39:06]
Live stream: state of the mesmer [0:45:23]
Live stream: state of the elemtalist [0:47:53]
Live stream: state of the blue bubble guy [0:00:37]
Live stream: state of the ranger [0:43:12]
… snip …
Here’s the stats difference against a Berserker Draconic set for pasting into buildcraft:
power: -170,
precision: -79,
toughness: 145,
vitality: 145,
critical damage: 4,
healing power: 145,
condition damage: 145,
magic find: 18
Here’s a build link for full berserker armour with divinity runes and celestial accessories ( no weapon, no food, no traits ): http://tinyurl.com/full-celestial – so you can just paste the above into the “Manual” tab
This could work reasonably well as an all rounder, with weapons and traits defining the build.
If you’re like me, and get frustrated with having to keep 6 armour sets consuming inventory space at all times you could probably risk having one good celestial set + one or two specialised ones.

I for one would like to be able to heal for 50,000 with a single hit

x-bow can be thematic, if it uses magic attacks.
Alternatively, main-focus can be a bit like the cross from dante’s inferno ( but with guardian ankh projectiles )
I can agree with the kite-ability point, I definitely would want to have a control weapon as an alternate.
Combined with a focus you can pump out 20k of damage in a couple of seconds with a pure dps build – so it’s effective as a fast strike weapon, but might suffer in a prolonged encounter ( as most damage builds do ). Heals are also welcome when you have sacrificed so much survivability.
(edited by Tarsius.3170)
Almost anything can be used for PvE, so if it works for you then great.
As you have 20 in Zeal, you could consider Binding Jeopardy aswell then when you switch to hammer you can use Zealot’s Embrace to throw a further 5 stacks of vulnerability on the target(s) – This should help makeup for the loss of the “vulnerability king” that is the greatsword.
Another entertaining video Amins – glad you are back in the blue bubble!
nice JI stomp. ; )) i still haven’t come across the oportunity to do that yet. XDD
You’ve got no thieves/mesmers on your server? :O
Nothing beats a good telestomping… well almost nothing
The one I haven’t managed myself yet is the Ele mist form tele stomp, that requires better timing than I have achieved yet.
You can’t really allow the effect to be turned off as enemies often rely on the the visual cue so they can avoid wasting their high damage skills on you ( which is a fair mechanic ).
I think it would be nice if they changed the effect when the shield is equipped so it emanates around the shield edge. But I’m fairly certain this would require tweaking every single shield model to accommodate the effect – Anet has (hopefully) bigger fish to fry.
My thanks to deso and viz, we were thinking of making our Keep more open plan and airy – I love what you’ve done with the place.
I love placing SoA right ontop of a boss which does long duration area projectile attacks ( like old tom in fractals ). You get a solid bubble of shimmering energy that completely projects your whole party for half a minute. So it can be pretty “cool” too.
nothing annoys me more than when the warrior infront of you kills an ambient you’re about to port to – I keep them alive when I can, you never know when you need them ;-)
with 100% chance, a shorter ICD and have it work on any weapon then it might be worth it.
Right now all I use it for is chilling my beer, and that doesn’t work well because Mighty Blow keeps smashing the bottles.
1000th reply! Free beer for everyone!
Looking at other sub-forums, no other profession likes to look at themselves as much as we do. We’re glorious!
(edited by Tarsius.3170)
“Guardian Hammer is pretty nice, but in 90% of my PvE runs I’d rather not have a light field destroying my teams ability to stack might/heals. Different experiences of PvE I guess.”
Wait. The light field messes up other people stacking might/heals? How?
It’s all about combo field precedence: FAQ 29
If you are constantly spamming light fields, then people will find it hard to proc might from fire fields, or healing from water fields etc. Since the retaliation you get from blasting a light field is comparatively useless, it annoys alot of people.

Since no one else has commented on this, I’d just like to say well done on another great cast.
It was nice to have a WvW perspective from the indomitable Christos, and Professor Beard is always entertaining.
Good job
As far as I know, Professor Beard/TheGlueGuy has been very busy out of game recently ( travelling etc ) hence he wasn’t able to spend time on the last scheduled consecrated podcast.
He did promise the next will be on time though – if not I suggest we all switch servers and troll him in WvW until he does ;-)
I was trying to heal my friend’s turret with Merciful Intervention, but i got TPd to a player with low health…. Basically I wasted my kittening kittenlike heal on some kittenish idiot who was gonna die anyway…
I’m asura, my sanctuary and wall of reflection should be small and cute like me…
Make greatsword and hammer ranged weapons.
(edited by Tarsius.3170)
Except that Guardians are more like Mogwai – they have been cute from birth and everyone wants one in their family, but Anet are afraid to feed them any milk and cookies since beta incase they turn into Gremlins and eat everyone.
3 pages of updated skill facts/tooltips ftw
I don’t think we’ll see blanket buffs because it would make certain builds much too strong
I don’t know what you’re talking about.
…
and I had even resisted the temptation to add “I’m looking at you Christos” – now I wish I had ;-)
@OP I think the max HP a guardian can achieve is just over 2300, that’s 2.5k of healing for allies just for rolling in the dirt every second or two in a zerg.
(edited by Tarsius.3170)
As far as I have seen so far ( which isn’t much because I only used to use them underwater ) , there is something off with their scaling. So they’re actually really powerful while you are levelling and practically useless at endgame.
In case others are interested like I was in a rough tally of the votes from Professions Collaborative Development Voting thread, I thought I’d do some command-line-foo to calculate the scores.
Professions voted top by each user are given 3 points, 2nd get 2 and 3rd get 1 point.
Note, I couldn’t be bothered to de-dupe people that voted more than once, so please don’t take this as a 100% accurate score:
Voted Professions that require balance
Profession Score Score Percent Number of Votes —-——————- —-—————- —-——————- —-——————- Ranger 2584 37.23% 1069 Elementalist 1461 21.05% 709 Necromancer 906 13.06% 492 Engineer 789 11.37% 471 Mesmer 542 7.81% 281 Thief 365 5.26% 212 Warrior 238 3.43% 136 Guardian 54 0.78% 31 – Total 6939 100% 3401
Poor Guardians
– your greatest strength (balance) is also you greatest weakness.
(edited by Tarsius.3170)
One plus with the way it works at the moment, if you’ve had to hit renewed focus as a panic button, you get a couple of seconds to fire any Virtues that still have their active available so the recharge isn’t wasted.
On the other hand I certainly wouldn’t mind it if dodging was disabled while the skill was channelling.
(edited by Tarsius.3170)
as far as I know it reduces all incoming damage by 10%, unlike the warrior equivalent which just raises toughness
Still has it’s place in WvW.
You can use it to deny zerg entry for a while when a gate or wall is breached .
With ground targeting it’s main utility is to knock people off towers or ledges.
You can use it to absorb a catapult strike if you place it correctly.
If nothing else it buys a few extra seconds to regroup or run for the hills
Occasionally I’ll switch it in for dungeons to keep rock dogs off the party ( combining with Ring of Warding and Line of Warding ).
I definitely wouldn’t keep it on my bar for any great period of time though, it IS a completely situational skill and the long CD will tie up a slot for a painful amount of time.
(edited by Tarsius.3170)
I would just like to suggest that why not try and change that ability? Why not let the 20% additional damage take effect after the aegis has been removed for lets say around 10 seconds.
so…Scathed Contender
So am I the only one that has gleaned that Jon Peter’s two favorite classes are ele and thief?
You can’t really use the frequency of posts to determine “dev favourites”. All it really shows is that some professions have been much more broken than others and have required much more dev attention.
The Guardian has always been a profession that broadly “works” – which can be an achilles heal [sic] because it promotes stagnation.
Professions like the Ranger have had broken core mechanics since day 1, which is why they top the “charts”:
Number of dev posts per profession
No. Location —-—- —-—————————————- 112 /forum/professions/ranger 71 /forum/professions/necromancer 67 /forum/professions/thief 63 /forum/professions/elementalist 49 /forum/professions/engineer 37 /forum/professions/warrior 34 /forum/professions/mesmer 22 /forum/professions/guardian
If you look over the past few months only, then the mesmer is last with guard and warrior ( the poster child ) tied for second place.
Sadly, there’s a lot of vitriol in these forums lately and a lot of the useful and constructive player feedback gets irrevocably lost in it.
(edited by Tarsius.3170)
Sword’s main problem is lack of AoE on something intended more as a damage weapon (as opposed to a defense weapon) … Maybe a small arc on the #1.
Sword actually has a small arc on #1, chain 3… it is very small however.
foofad, you are obligated now – make sure Knox’s post didn’t die in vain! ;-)
Aza: A fix for that fix fix will feature in the next month’s balance patch
Since your crit chance is so low then Sigil of Force will give you a much better damage boost.
Fire is a nice AoE burst skill, but you need to get your crit chance up a lot higher for it to pay for it’s “weight” – you want that puppy going off every 5 seconds
(edited by Tarsius.3170)
