Roaming: Who, what, why, how? #Discussion

So why do roamers engage in pvp that heavily favors them, is low rewarded and has minimal impact to their server? Because they like to bully others.

As someone who enjoys roaming and small scale wvw play I strongly disagree with this and find it a bit insulting.

I wil firstly say how I prefer to roam. I always try to:
- react to rather than initiate combat with another player, unless its obvious they want to engage in a fight and I need to get the initial attack in.
- use objectives (camps/sentries) to set targets. I never roam aimlessly, I’ll always look out for the distribution of captured objectives on a map and decide where is the best place to flip camps, whether that means running around northcamp in enemy BL or flipping southern camps or whatever, there will always be a goal in mind if the situation arises that I happen to not run into any decent fights.
- on a similar note, I will join in with small or large groups trying to flip a tower or keep if I happen to be moving in that direction or there are no other good objectives on the map, but eventually I’ll get bored of it and move off in my own direction if it looks like a camp needs taking.
- not chase/hunt players who are obviously built/geared for zerg play or are upscaled, or at an obvious disadvantage – unless they have decided to attack me and initiate the combat or I am outnumbered and they are the squishiest target in a group of players attacking me. If an enemy is running past me not wanting to engage in combat I will let them go.
- on that note, when I am outnumbered, whether 1v2+, 2v3+, 3v4+ then as far as I’m concerned anything goes, I don’t care what build or gameplay the enemy is geared for in that situation, I will play to win/survive.
- but I will chase players who are geared for roaming even if we outnumber them 2v1 for example enemy condi mesmers.
- if I come across a good fight, whether solo or with one or two allies vs other players who are geared for small scale or roaming, I will abandon objectives to engage in it, even if it means juking back and forth for an extended period of time with no clear victory or failure in sight. Yes it might not be getting points, but in this situation I don’t care because the fun of the combat is more important.

Secondly although I can’t speak for other players, I will give reasons why I enjoy wvw roaming compared with large scale gameplay or even pvp:
1. Less lag – large scale wvw is not fun when the gameplay is not smooth due to lag.
2. Less screen clutter and unpredictable effects – I don’t find dying to aoes that deal thousands of damage any fun.
3. Ability to build gear exactly as I want, unlike in pvp where the amulet stat restrictions are stupid. For example I would run Viper in pvp but it’s either all glass or nothing. In wvw I can round it out with other stats to get the exact stat distribution I want for the playstyle I prefer.
4. No stupid capture points to play around – taking camps/sentries and having fights is far more fun than running around a tiny map trying to hold capture points.
5. On that note the freeform nature of wvw is more appealing than the rigid match structure of pvp. Maybe you’re in a 1v1 then 3 other enemies come along… what do you do? It’s stuff like that that I get a kick out of, you never know what is around the corner and need to be prepared for anything.
6. More individual control over skills – I don’t like the large scale blob or even medium scale gameplay in the same way as I don’t like high end instanced pve – I prefer to have control over all the skills I’m using rather than being a “skill” for a macroscopic entity consisting of multiple players.
7. Challenge – I enjoy the challenge of running solo or with one/two allies and especially running into outnumbered situations or with skilled opponents where what you do as an individual matters, either in securing a single stomp or surviving and escaping.

I know some might say roaming is dead for multiple reasons – supposedly “broken” HoT builds being one of them, however I don’t think it’s in as dire a state as it is made out to be. I build to be self sufficient when solo, in order to survive and harass, whether that involves objectives or players or both, and there is certainly a lot of fun and challenge to be had if you look for it and aim to challenge yourself.

I think it was a joint lobbying effort by the art teams and their supporters; they just wanted a way to show-off their work. The art remains the singular standout feature of GW2. While there have been issues aplenty with GW2, art has never been a problem.

It is true that the term “roaming” has morphed. It is now all of what has been said above: scouting, camp stomping, objective contesting, tower or even keep ninja-ing, and of course fighting.

In terms of fighting, roamers will do “fair” fights, ganking (I call it vulture style), pin sniping, back line assassinations, sneak attacks, silly stuff (ever seen alpha golems duke it out, Rock’em, Sock’em style?), all in the spirit of having fun.

Roamers think a lot about their builds, both solo and team, exercising their creativity. I’ve come across a number of effective 2-man teams taking out 4-5.

My own best solo roaming accomplishment was taking Anzalias Pass from the red team. Mind you, I play in t1, where there is no shortage of players.

My guild is comprised mostly of WvW roamers. We laugh when our group of 2-6 forces an EWP pull, calling a 50-man blob to save an objective. We feel sorry when we come across a newbie WvWer roamer all the while stomping them. We consider it vitality important when our Zerg is trying to take a t3 bay that our role is to camp between bay and the enemy garrison to try to prevent enemy reinforcements from trickling in. While we don’t mind playing along with the blob, it eventually bores us and we split off in our direction.

There you have it at it’s core for the answer to “why roam?” It offers freedom, creativity, flexibility, and ingenuity.

Roaming is the best fun in GW. Solo roaming that is. Beats the heck out of playing a zerglet.

I found this highly frustrating, as I tried to transfer off my server with my guild, but Anet decided to lock servers early that week by about 2 hours.

So, I’m stuck on a now dead, t4 server, without my guild, and unable to move to another server unless i constantly swap every 8 weeks to a new server and use my gold/gems to stay in a competitive scene.

Where are the new WvW content?

in WvW

XenesisII.1540

I don’t think you guys quite understand the direction they are going with.

Expansions are for pve content, new pve zones, masteries, and introducing new weapons and specializations to the game. It’s their biggest base of players and they will make their money in this area of the game. It was never about releasing equal sized content for pve wvw and pvp, I don’t know where you got that idea from, it’s not “33%” complete.

Content made for PVP and WVW are released for free, when they are ready and not going to be held for an expansion, including maps if they ever develop another one for wvw, you don’t need HoT to play on the desert borderland.

The only exception is you need the HoT expansion to use the new specs in wvw, mastery for auto loot, and the shield gens, this time you will only need it for the new specs with PoF.

There is no “big overhaul” coming, parts of that already shipped, get over it already.

My pov I interpret OP’s post as “literally the PvP system” where it’s basically amulet + traits, weapons…

  • Do I get a refund for my many sets of WvW infusions that costed me many laurels to obtain?
  • Do I get a refund of thousands of gold, mats etc for crafting my maxed out gear for WvW?
  • Do I even get a build template when I switch to this system in WvW?

Like how would this fix anything? Then people will complain about “X amulet is too OP, NERF IT!” People will still run the same, monotonous OP meta builds as is now.

I think what needs to happen is a sharp examination of traits and make the next x-pac elite specs + core specs relevant for WvW gameplay be it zerging, roaming, GvG, small-scale havoc, scouting, 1v1 etc. I remember reading a decent thread that suggested secondary roles or something as an additonal feature in WvW. Like being an assaulter gave you X kit/skill/benefit against X in combat or whatever. I believe more in freedom of choice than being constrained to what PvP’s system is built upon.

Im a WvW player, I’m used to toxic condis. Was easy taking them down, just had a bit more HP. Dunno why people die to this. Just get 1-2 cleanses and dodge a bit. I know that off-raid PvE players are not used to dodge or cleanse,

I rarely complain on the forums about boss fights and such but I have to say that for a ranger/druid the fearless achievement is impossible to do. I’d love for a game developer to show us rangers how to do the fight. I’m not using any dmg abilities until the break bar is gone so the boss won’t get any damage resistance boons on him, yet the best I manage is 50%.

If any ranger/druid has any advice here, feel free to share. If this achievement is only for warriors or something, I think you’ve done something wrong ArenaNet.

I gave up after getting it down to 25 health, then having it reset to 100 and being told to try it again. Nope, another battle I will never finish. Never finished mordromoth, and will never do this one so that’s 2 LS I will not complete. Really aggravated/frustrated and wondering why I bother even playing any more as it’s becoming less and less fun to play with every patch/update/LS.

What I want to know is, why was this fight even a … well, a fight?

We’re playing The Commander, the person that went into Mordremoth’s mind/dream, and confronted him on his own terms. We went up against the Elder Dragon of Mind, and it pulled out of us our deepest fears and regrets. And we BEAT THEM.

This? A spell cast by someone that doesn’t really know us that well at all? We should have been able to walk up to “self doubt”, grab it by the head, and give a quick twist. THAT would have fit our history better, moved the story right along, and given everyone a reminder that The Commander has seen some kitten.

It was never a bug, and working as intended. When ALL guild members leave a map, tactics go public, has been this way since HoT beta. This is so others can use them when there is no one available on the map to pull it, the objective does not belong to your guild, you merely claimed it.

If you read the OP, I complained about a lot of other stuff too…

5 out of 8 points are about the rewards…
It just makes it look like you are here to ask for more/easier rewards, while throwing in some of the other permanent problems wvw has to make it seems otherwise.

That said, I do agree on the first two.

You are spot on. He has several threads and posts decrying the speed and amount of effort he needs to do to earn the rewards.

If you really want to throw things in a tizzy – give an AP Point for each wvw rank and watch the PVE heros go bonkers.

Sad to say, I’m the same.
I’m hoping that there were numerous lessons learned and stable leadership to produce the upcoming expansion, and hope is the reason I’m willing to buy into it.

Excited about the new item for my home instance. Disappointed as to how it works. You select a material of choice and leave the instance and its mailed to you… why not just make it like the “Karmic Converter” where it’s in your inventory and you choose the material you want? Why is this a home instance thing if it is mailed to you? I love to bring my closest friends in game to my home instance because sharing is caring so you can only imagine how excited I was when I saw this new item and had to have it, but…. no one can use it but the instance owner. Yes i know the treasure box is only for the instance owner as well but you had to go through a lot to get it. Like the cloth and leather rack anyone in the instance can access it, let it be the same for the board.

SOLUTION #1:
1. The instance owner chooses what material to display on the board.
2. People that join the instance do not get to choose but will have access to the board and will get what ever the instance owner chose the day before.

SOLUTION #2:
1. Remove the board from the home instance and turn it in to an item like the “Karmic Converter” where only the owner has access to it.

I am not upset that I got the item for my home instance…I am disappointed at how it works.

Why are so many items account/soulbound?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Just a flesh wound.3589

Just a flesh wound.3589

What currently account bound items do you think should be made tradeable? How will that impact supply & demand of such items, including whether those items feel valuable?

I’d have to go through the list but a lot of the stuff you get in daily logins should not be account bound, like dye packs for example.

As to whether the items are more or less valued depending on whether they can be given/sold or not, I would argue that account bound items all have quite literally zero value since they cannot be sold at all. Allowing them to be sold gives them value which is obviously greater than having no value at all.

Dye packs on daily logins? We get those? I’ve gotten unopened dyes but those are sellable.

I am guessing he is talking about the dye packs you get on your 4th anniversary which allows you to get some of the rarer dyes. I can understand that they are account bound otherwise this would probably significantly have influenced the market. Furthermore this would basically mean they are giving you gold as a present which is, in my opinion, not the purpose of a present.

That’s probably what he meant. Those dyes probably shouldn’t be sellable since as you said they would impact the dye market significantly.
__________________

As for the daily log in rewards we get
1) mystic coins, bags of crafting mats: sellable
2) laurels: indirectly sellable through buying crafting mats
3) exotic equipment: indirectly sellable through salvaging.
4) tomes: indirectly sellable through generation of Spirit Shards.
5) gem store items, boosters, luck, T charges: not sellable

So most of the items are sellable to indirectly sellable, though of course, some are worth more than others when used to make gold indirectly.

I don’t see ANet ever making gemstore items, boosters, luck or T charges sellable and items like tomes, I suspect there is such a surplus that they would sell for very little.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.
