So Colin Johanson just added his “looking ahead” blog post, and while it had a lot about mechanics, it had almost nothing about story. Where is the story going?! This game needs a future, it needs a goal. What locations will be available in six months that aren’t available today? Adding a few more “playgrounds” like Southsun and Cliffs isn’t going to cut it, you guys need to pick a dragon and have us set out after it, and you need to get started now.

you spend complaining about it on the forums, you’d be

It´s nice to know the story will come together, what I have a problem figuring out is why I should care.

What we have here is “cliffhanger-itis”.
It is an ancient TV-trope to keep the addicts at bay but still lure them in.

It´s also the main reason I stopped watching Battle Star Galactica or Heroes after a while.

3 decades ago, when I was a kid this stuff worked very well, as there weren´t
SO
INCREDIBLY
MANY
OTHER
distractions vying for my attention!
But in this media format? You´re riding right into obscurity with your timetable.

Quite frankly ANet, you need to learn to tl;dr. As much as it hurts to say that.

What you´re doing right now works for books and barely on TV, but with these people here?
Not so much.

The stories are connected. You’ll find out more later this year.

Here’s my stance on this, how can the stories act as a hook if we don’t see how they are connected until later this year? Now I know there are minor details that are introduced and left hanging (the silver tongued person behind the Molten Alliance, almost everything to do with Kasmeer and her recurring appearances despite not being obviously involved, the disappearances in Divinity’s Reach, the identities of Mister E and Scarlet etc), but is it good story telling if you are implementing a story which has lots of seemingly trivial plot points (introduced over 6+ months) only to reveal later it was more important than it felt like to the player?

It feels like you are burying the lead with all this stuff and the real story is what’s not being told. Wouldn’t it be better if less of the side story was hidden so players could become invested in connections, giving them something to look forwards to and a purpose to their actions until then rather than constantly feeling like we are involved in unrelated events?

Was the personal story designed with the assumption that it was OK for the player to die repeatedly? I find that constantly dying in a story ABOUT MY LIFE kind of breaks the immersion. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been jumped by 8 or more mobs who dogpile me so fast I am dead before I really get to do much more than start my auto-attack. Now granted, I am an old guy, so I’m not super reflex guy, but it seems like the designers were thinking, “well, if they die they can just go on from a checkpoint.” This is true, but it is also horrendously bad storytelling.

Repeatedly dying in WvW or even regualr PvE is OK, but getting ganked by piles of mobs in an instanced quest that is supposedly tailored for you is not.

thanks,
Matt

Looks to be another very bland content patch.

I was unaware that adding a new area in DR (Reperation in the Great Divide is underway) With easy access to everything ,

“Unlimited” salvaging ,
New weapon and armors ,
Treasure hunting ,
Guild message of the day (something people wanted since release)
PvP Dishonorable + Leaderboard ,
Game optimization , the ability to limit particule effects (something people wanted since release) ,
LFG tool ,

Was bland .

New district in DR does nothing for me. I never go to DR. They could add a “Flying Unicorn” Vendor to DR and I would not go.

“Unlimited Salvaging” …is nothing but a gimmick that will cost you more than it will save. Think of it more like “Emergency Salvage” rather than “Unlimited Salvage”. Because that is truly all it is.

“GMotD and PvP Dishonorable/Leaderboards” – I don’t join guilds and the only PvP I like is solo roaming WvW.

“Treasure Hunting”…is going to be as abysmal as “Archaeology” was to WoW.

“Game Optimizations” Seriously, go buy a gaming rig and stop playing on a laptop. That’s what I have to say for graphics optimizations.

“LFG Tool” – I don’t run group dungeons/fractals. As a matter of fact, I don’t group up at all.

So yeah….nothing for me in those notes.

sounds like you shouldn’t be playing this game at all then

On entering the dungeon, the prompt reads something like “Enter Story Mode.” Story mode was supposed to be the relaxed, easy dungeons, with explorable the harder mode. Even those who like this fight are comparing it favorably to the supposedly harder explorable mode dungeons which they say are too easy.

Now, I can do most explorable mode dungeons fairly readily. Couldn’t pass this fight, though. With arthritic hands and fingers, simultaneously running while looking around for golems while finding then jumping on boxes while trying to shoot golems while dodging or using stability to avoid pulls is beyond my physical capability. My fingers don’t work that way now. If they ever did, it was before personal computers.

Now, I don’t have a problem with not being able to complete this dungeon. However, if ANet is going to make a practice of inserting twitchy, use multiple fingers on both hands simultaneously mechanics into boss fights, at least put them in explorable modes. Leave story modes for those of us whose manual dexterity isn’t up to these gyrations.

If they made an easy/normal mode to choose from on these dungeons, then there should be no rewards from the easy mode other than to see the story. Any form of scaled rewards would only lead players to grind away at easy modes because they would run it 5 times in the same timeframe as a single regular mode.

No slight intended, but that sounds just a tad bit elitist. How about we also say, “no drops from any mobs prior to Orr” (or whatever zone/region you feel is the most difficult)? Why should anyone doing the “easy” zones get anything for their relatively smaller effort?

All activities have—or are supposed to have—appropriately scaled rewards. If devs made it so the sum value of rewards in an easy mode dungeon version were so attractive that it was a siren song for hordes of slavering farmers, then it’s their mistake (cough CoF1 cough). On the assumption they’re smart enough not to repeat certain dubious decisions and/or are quick enough to correct them, there’s no reason to make easier mode versions rewardless, just appropriate like all other aspects of the reward system are expected to be.

Providing easy mode would allow for players to be able to see the story and at the same time give them practice for the same encounters in normal mode. It should be like SAB’s infantile mode. It lets you run through everything in the normal mode, but you can’t get credit for the achievements.

Now, im going to open this with an im special speech because I am…

As a gamer with Tendonitis, I want to enjoy content at a casual and relaxing pace that does not bring agony and suffering to my physically, but content like Aetherblade’s dungeon is a classic agony trip for someone struggling with symptons of this affliction.

I would ask A-net to in seriousness consider appealing to “both” casual and hardcore audiences and stop with the exclusivity of end game content to people with 5 hands, 20 eyeballs and the flexes of jackie chan.

Yes, people like hard stuff, yes, people like to be challanged, but some people, quite alot infact, have many more than one reason they cant enjoy the content.

I would ask… if not plea, that in future, A-net designs a casual mode for people who have time commitements, physical disabilities or simply issues with playing the “hardcore” experience.

Sure, grant the hardcores ascended gear, sure, grant the hardcores the end game reward, thats fine.

But dont leave out the casuals, as someone desperate to continue enjoying the story, it actually breaks my heart that some of it forces me to do content that causes me physical pain to do.

And thats ONLY the story, im not BOTHERED if I have epics or not, id just like to enjoy, the content.

And I am 110% certain that I am NOT alone.

Apparently Anet thinks its “fun” and “interesting” to get CC spammed non-stop. Stability isn’t even a good solution to it either because it only lasts a few seconds with a 30 second recharge. Dodging is hardly a solution when you have 3 golems perma-chasing and CC spamming you across the room. Needless to say, I quit after 3 attempts. Not just because it almost made me fall asleep, but also because it’s just plain annoying how everything can rip through over 3.5k armor in seconds.

I have a hard time getting into Living World events because they kinda feel tacked on to me. I’d be a lot more excited to try a new, permanent, difficult, and rewarding dungeon.

Hmmm,….I’m wondering if at all you’ve done the F&F Molten Weapons Facility, or the recent (and still open) Aetherblade Retreat? Because both were difficult and rewarding. AR is very, very difficult, and the rewards are at least 1 rare at the end, 1 gold, possibility of the Monocle (I so want!), and whatever the mid-boss drops. I’ve also received 3x Jade Weapon Tickets from all the coffers that have dropped for me in there (2 on one run!).

i dont want to see any living world events.. instead i would go 100% on rewards dungeons permanent content.. etc.. what the people is asking anet everyday.. and they keep ignoring.. stop this living world stuff.. if that is necesary to fix and get the stuff we need and want.. nobody would mind… really

Ya….they’re not going to “stop the Living World stuff”. A minority, which have no interest in something new but want the same-ol’, same-ol’, are the ones asking for those other things. They have no understanding that GW2 is NOT like other MMO’s, and will not be (see my post above, which is a direct quote from the developers).

If you don’t want to see the Living Story, which will be constant, then I might suggest to look for your flavor of fun else where. This flavor of fun isn’t going to try to “New Coke” it’s customers.

~Snip~

That should suffice to say, more or less shut up those that keep asking for raiding, gear progression, and the same features/content from other MMO games. If they want that, great on them, but there are choices out there that has what they want. This game, GW2, is going to -as the developers such as Colin have said- progress with the Living Story and do it’s own thing. I love it. I enjoy it. I HAVE FUN! GW2 for the win!

I disagree. Anyone who has purchased Guild Wars 2 (Including people who buy/bought Gems), is entitled to an opinion about the direction of the game, or lack there of. (People who were banned should not have a say)This includes armor, raids, and maybe even content similar to other MMOs, they should be allowed to.

ArenaNet has also stated they welcome suggestions, as long as they are constructive, and respectful to others.

Actually, they don’t. They pay no monthly subscription and are not “entitled” to anything other than to be able to play the game as it is when they purchase it, with all the content that’s labeled on the box. All these Living Story content updates are FREE, as in players haven’t had to pay a dime to play them. That is the direction of this game as outlined by Colin in the blog post (so you can’t really say “lack there of” just because you don’t like it).

Once again I must point out that the developers are not wanting to, and will not try to, be like other MMOs on the market. They don’t want to create WoW2.0. They don’t want the very mediocre dungeon treadmill attached with a spotty power creep. They want GW2 to be the best at being it’s own thing, with their own set of goals and creativity. If you* don’t like, if you* can’t have fun with it, if you* can’t enjoy it, and if all you* do is complain about how it should be like ‘X’ game instead of how it is., then just log out, uninstall, and don’t play. Such a simple concept. But, demanding them to change their game to your liking for no other reason that to be like every other game out there is rude and just spitting in the face of ArenaNet.

*The “you” is not the person I quote, but more of a general to the many who try to change this game to something it’s not to push their own agenda rather than going out and finding what they do enjoy.

The only reason this news would upset me is if Anet decides to give non-raiders the middle finger and add items that are only attainable via raids. That would change the dynamic of this game too far into a direction that I simply want nothing to do with anymore (I used to be a hardcore raider, years ago…).

That would only really be an issue if those items would be better/stronger than the others.
If they were only cosmetic that wouldn’t really be an issue.
