My problem with the event is ArenaNet.
ArenaNet handled it disgracefully and ignorantly, showing they learned nothing from the feedback with Halloween. Or showing they didn’t care to listen, and decided to push out failed content, instead of holding it until ready.
During beta, we got messages on screen. They showed humor and warmth, saying things like;
“We extended the beta another 2 hours. You have 2 hours left.” (then an hour later)
“We extended the beta another 2 hours. You have 1 hour left.” (then a minute later)
“oops, we mean 1 hour longer and 1 hour left. Have fun!”
Where was that this event? WHERE WAS THAT SINCE RELEASE?
ArenaNet could have done it to guide the failed events and get players to know they have a shot in another overflow at the Final Boss. Too often people found out by word-of-mouth and lost out on the chance. Not only that, they lost out while realizing others knew and benefited all day.
Facebook has an announcement that players will be compensated. FACEBOOK!?!? Where is this announcement on the official forums? In-game? Anywhere the player should find expected information?
I have nothing against using third party sites like Facebook, Twitter, or Reddit, but USE YOUR OWN kitten OFFICIAL SITES AS WELL.
Should not have to keep saying the same message over and over until the thick skulled employees that are preventing this suddenly become wiser.
I said I’d never go back to Panda Craft. I’m eating my words. They have Public Test Servers. They stress test content to release it bug free.
ArenaNet does not. That is another failure in the game. This event showed all the cracks in the mechanics. All the complaints about the old ways of MMO design are minor compared to this failed experiment. People were dying left and right because they were knocked down in AoE. No way to heal them, stabilize them, or take away their conditions reliably. We can only “Support” (what a kittening joke) for a fraction of a second, while the other player is pinned down dying.
These types of mechanics are fine when the players can react. But when I see a player get knocked down, and is frantically trying to dodge into the non-AoE zone unsuccessfully, and is obviously lacking ALL TOOLS to do so, then the game mechanics are a failure. The design is a failure. And the people who let it release like that are failures. Especially since I was throwing all sorts of “support” at them with my entire server doing the same.
This failure of an event showed how players bond to overcome crappy design. We made it work by standing around rezzing and not playing. It was boring, tedious, and aggravating. Mobs had skills to effectively negate all control from the players. The mobs could knockdown for long durations, cause heavy damage, and blanket a large area in seconds. All those abilities stacking is not challenge, it is a nightmare. There is no teamwork that can overcome that except rezz-zerging, which is not fun.
And lag. If the majority of players are lagging, you do not have working content. Period. Lag should be a rarity. GW2 sports it like a feature.
The worst point of all? The event was hyped and promoted by ArenaNet to bring in players and show off GW2. It showed it off alright. How horrible everything can go wrong, with no official word.
When people complained about Halloween, you had just as many defending you. This event? You have very few defending anything. They are all having to look very hard at the silver lining. And more of us are expecting this is ArenaNet’s true standard.

Excellent post. I feel as if I could have designed a more accessible and less bugged event on a bar napkin.
Should have renamed the event… Fractal of the Mists because it is the only thing they did right. Good job on making a sick dungeon that makes us pick our brain. But everything out pretty much trash/useless. Back to the drawing boards devs.
Also people who said that GW2 is an F2P does not know what F2P means. GW2 is B2P. You actually had to purchase the game to play the game. Seems like everyone forgot that.
Beta Wars 2.
Waiting for Guild Wars 2.

Now that the event is officially over: there is really no reason to go back other than to maybe grab Ori nodes. There is nothing really to do in this zone now and since mobs are much harder than anywhere else + they have very very low drop rates: I will not be going back ever.
Hate to see such a beautiful zone go to waste. Oh well.
Anyways, I feel really bad and sorry to all the players who could not attend or the ones who could not even complete it. You have my condolences.
free?… i clearly remember paying for this game….
also… they can take this kind of content and shove it.
Release this slag heap of an event as dlc? Not even ANet are that crass.
First off. Great event other than the lag and bugs. I love the new dungeon.
Secondly, to all those who are crying about not getting a pre cursor. Mind you, I did not get one either, however I placed an offer on the TP for 165g and it netted me one. I am happy with the outcome. You are not entitled to ANYTHING in this game. It is free to play and to think they came up with ALL this in just 2 weeks, just blows my mind.
Thirdly, they did not reward precursors solely to reward certain players. It brings down the average price on the TP, making it significantly easier to farm the gold and buy it.
It wasn’t the fact we didn’t get a precursor… it was because of this
Another valid point Anet.
Please, help us help you. We want to play this great game of yours; you promised us we would not be at any big advantage for time constraints. I know you want to reward players for one time events with goodies players will appreciate but can you cut us a little slack for the people who aren’t in your ‘mean’ population. Pun intended.
I would have really loved to just ‘participate’ in the event
I doubt anet will read this, but this event was such a pain that I feel the need to vent…this was a pretty cool idea, but the execution sucked, esp. the phase 3 event. not even going to care about the phase 1 bugs, which were just kitten (seriously, those had to be the easiest part of all this and you couldn’t get those right). Phase 2 was OK, it almost made up for phase 1, but phase 3 just didn’t work.
wandering with this massive zerg of people is not that exciting. esp. when (during the reinforcements phases), I got lagged so bad it was taking 30 sec – 1 minute for anything to happen on a key press. Plus you really couldn’t see anything because of all the skill effects. And speaking of not seeing anything, I really just can’t describe how fun it is to get face rolled by enemies I can’t see because there are so many people/enemies/effects/wtfever on screen. i managed to stick it out through the rewards, which were nice, but overall the whole thing was more an exercise in patience than in fun.
Please take these events back to something similar-ish to the GW1 instances. group folks up in 20 – 50 person chunks, tone down the map so there’s no lag or enemy visibility problems. surely you can find a way to make something like this happen? i’ll continue to play, but this seriously tested my faith. hope wintersday is better.
Epic events need momentum. It becomes borefest during bomb planting and reinforcements with the champions (veterans are rather okay).
Overflow size. I’ve crashed twice mid-event which meant restarting fresh twice. There’s just no chance of rejoining my party through right-click join or exiting & re-entering.
I’m not going to re-type out the massive wall ‘o text I had in the last thread, so I’ll just summaraize:
Day 1 – Marred with bugs that have been present in other Dynamic Events since day 1, lag that Anet should have prepared for, poor communication between GMs and Players when they tried to come in and “Fix” the broken bits.
Day 2 – A total fiasco that ended with many not seeing the starting events that lead to Southsun Cove. There is also a painfully large lack of content to do on Southsun Shore now that the event is over, and the mob balancing there is ridiculously bad. I doubt many are going to spend much time here when they can have a much easier time farming mats for their Ascended and Legendary gear in Orr or the FoM.
Day 3 – Terrible pacing and overly-long segments of the Dynamic Event to simply “pad” for time made for one of the most un-enjoyable experiences I, and many, have had in this game. Couple that with the DC issues, the horrible lag, and the lack of fun from the event and you have one of the most unforgettably awful events to “Grace” an MMO in a very long time.
The short of it is: Guild Wars 2 needs a Public Test Server so players can test this content and give feed back and report bugs before it goes live. There is no reason this mess should have reached the live servers in the state it was at launch.
One Time Events like this also need to stop if this is what the future of them is going to be. The events would be fine occasionally to mark the launch of a new expansion or what not, as long as these events lasted for a week or two with repeating Dynamic Events so those that are unable to attend (for whatever reason) on one day can still participate on another without missing out on anything.
The one time boss kills should be instanced for parties of 5. None of this world boss stuff.
Well, not sure, but if this thread was deleted and ANet does not respond responsibly to this really bad Event, I will never buy another Gem… just not going to give my money to a company that does not stand up and take it shots when it screws up. Bad show and very bad form, ANet… and very disappointing for a company I once thought was the best gaming company out there.

Now THIS is the kind of post I like to see from the developers

I think what you’re asking may be too much…
Let’s look at some of the biggest titles in this area, Mass Effect and the Elder Scrolls.
Both of them do a very good job of giving you a sense of character, however they are both majorly flawed in their own way. Keep in mind I’m going off of a brief playing of Mass Effect, what I know from Dragon Age, and word of mouth so forgive me if this is incorrect.
In Mass Effect and BioWare’s other titles, you have an overarching story line that you have to complete, with side things on the way. You are the hero. However, you can choose what kind of hero you are.
With the Elder Scrolls, you don’t really know your character’s personality. What they like, how they like it, you don’t focus on the details (officially, anyway). However you choose to be a hero or not.
The ‘ideal game’ as mentioned before would be a monumental task, and unfortunately it would probably have to be tackled in a single-player game rather than an MMO, at least for the first go. And even then, we’d still have to wonder about ‘all the others doing the same thing.’ Bypassing that is impossible unless it’s a sandbox game.
Like said before, really all we can do is make RP fill the gaps.
Hi there. I’m Spud, and I like to draw shiz. I made an Asura on a whim one day and instantly fell in love with them. Their stories, their culture, their attitudes and most of all their looks were inspiring. I wanted to challenge myself to draw them to familiarize myself with their facial structure since I’ve hardly ever drawn anything outside of human. I got my guildies to post screenshots of their Asura so I could borrow their portraits for my little project. So here’s the result of my exploration, enjoy.

I have absolutely no doubt that people will have this problem until they fix the issue. There’s nothing expected about having a date-dependent feature reset using a different time-zone from the server.
So yes, you will seriously see these kinds of posts every month. It’s clearly a bug in the UX.
I hope they do some kind of tie in with meatober fest, i know it’s not october but it seems oddly appropriate.
So, this is probably a bug, but after completing the Mad King’s dungeon in Lion’s Arch, the boss FOV stays active. Basically, it shows a lot more of the environment when you fully zoom out the camera distance.
With the recent addition of the beta FOV command line to the shortcut, would it be possible to maybe make this particular camera view another setting? I was thinking just another tick box in the settings somewhere to enable this kind of wide viewing angle.
I’ve linked some quick snapshots I took below with the boss FOV in random areas to give a sense of scale and what not. The reason I’d want this is it allows me to take in the landscapes of where I’m at, and not simply just focus on my character. Considering how amazing this game looks (even on my meager medium settings), having the choice to zoom out like this and play this way just makes sense to me personally.

This has been an amazing event. I loved all the Acts, minigames, and achievements. Keep up the good work.
I loved this one time event. It was a ton of fun waiting in LA with hundreds of people with absolutely NO IDEA what was going to happen when the clock struck noon. People were dancing, there were fireworks going off everywhere, food/costume fights galore. It was epic. Then when the MK burst through the statue people just went crazy. Everyone dove straight into the portal having no idea what to expect and it was a blast.
I’m sorry if your expectations weren’t met, but that really isn’t Anet’s fault. They never said nor implied that this event was going to be some grand opportunity that would instantly grant everyone legendaires or something.
So we made this gw2 internet is for pom video because we used to like the gw1 version so much!! enjoy!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdUfYVXpwv8
Not risen. Three words: Candy. Corn. Elementals.
They are ridiculous and awesome and I want to see them return.
I actually enjoy a lot of the Skritt dialogue!
I have to attribute this to the ‘Escort Rikkiti’ questline, as Rikkiti was the first Skritt that made me appreciate them as more than just pilfering rats (it’s what I get for playing a human first).
I just get a kick out of pretty much everything that Rikkiti said/did during that quest. Especially the interaction with the Deputy Asura.
“Deputy, Deputy!”
“Yes, what is it Rikkiti?”
“Sheriff want shinies back. Rikkiti get shinies! Teach Hyleks stealing bad.”
“And did our ineffectual sheriff offer any thoughts on how precisely we might accomplish that?”
“Yes… no… what?”
“(sigh) Sheriff say how we get shinies back?”
“Oooh! Deputy talk like Rikkiti stupid! Rikkiti not stupid!”
“….”
“Sheriff not say how we get shinies back!”
Or, later on in the quest:
“Rikkiti! Procure the purloined goods!”
“Get shinies?!”
“Yes, yes, get shinies.”
“Shi-hi-hinyyy!”
Followed by that crazy adorable Skritt laugh.
Skrittsburg was pretty clever to find, also. I liked the random in love Skritt that didn’t quite know what to do about it.
I also enjoyed literally falling into my first jumping puzzle in Caledon Forest. I hadn’t done a jumping puzzle at all at that point and I was backing up away from some mobs, dodge rolled backwards, and literally fell into a hidden cave. Was pretty memorable for me.
As for memorable battles, that actually involved Skritt, too. I was playing as an Asura Mesmer and got to that event where you have to stop Skritt from dismantling a portal. I was the only one at that event and was getting swarmed simultaneously stopping runaway Skritt as well as defending against attacking Skritt. I was swapping like mad between Staff and Dual Blades using everything I had to hold them back. I lasted quite awhile actually, but eventually failed the event. I survived, though, and it was the first battle that actually made me feel like I had to use everything in my arsenal to get through. Which is weird, since it was just a low level encounter with Skritt. >.>
Goal: To have one character of every race, gender, and armor class combination at level 80.
Current progress: Human 4/6 | Charr 1/6 | Norn 1/6 | Sylvari 1/6 | Asura 1/6 | Total: 8/30
See, the problem I see isn’t the talk about the criticisms of the game, or the negative feedback.
The problem I’m continually seeing is people declaring the game dead, that it’s a ghost town, nobody is ever playing it and so forth. If you want to make those claims, back it up with evidence and not merely hearsay.
I love reading the criticisms of the game, the things that could be improved, the things that could be fixed. I agree with quite a few of them.
The issue is that most of these threads that talk about criticisms also delve into the entire “this game is dying, the sky is falling, you failed us, you aren’t listening to us” arguments.
People need to learn to be patient to see just what ArenaNet is working on and doing. You truly can’t expect massive game-breaking changes within 2 months of an MMO’s release. You have to give it time. If you don’t like what you see in the coming months, then by all means, do the right thing for yourself and stop playing.
The bottom line is this, there’s a difference between criticism, positive / negative feedback and creating hearsay and doomsday claims just for the sake if trying to drive your point forward.
The vast majority are enjoying the game immensely.
The small minority are posting on the forums.
Great quote. Read it over and over again spoon an diabluz
