I think the dodge daily needs to be seperated from ‘dodging attacks’. The latter just requires you to remove yourself from the vicinity of a mob before it damages you (although this is harder than it sounds as they do seem to have a looooong reach at times, in melee) but the former requires you to move away within a certain, specific, time frame. The two are not, in any way, comparable except for the lack of damage received. I can, for instance, get out of a mobs damage range whenever I so desire, BUT I find it a right pain in the posterior to get the kitten timing right for the dodge daily.
So, please, stop insinuating people who don’t like the dodge daily can not dodge in combat. Its more like a QTE to be honest.
I almost never see people with minis. There are a couple reasons for this I think.
First: You have to take it out every single time you change map/instance. That get’s really old, really quick.
Second: Deposit all sends it to the bank. Certain bags can do away with this problem, but it requires you to have those specific bags in the first place. I personally greatly prefer general use bags for all purposes.
There is a very easy solution to this that I think would greatly increase the popularity of mini’s and can’t imagine anyone not being in favor of: A mini-pet slot.
It would be in your “H” menu. You just pick a mini-pet that you want and ‘equip’ it. Then it will never be sent to your bank and it will automatically appear every time you enter a new map/zone.
Let’s take dodging. Not enough people are dodging – which is meant to be a core mechanic of the combat. That seems to be a definite thing just looking over the last 16 pages of crying (OMG I HAVE TO DODGE! LAME!). So AN adds it to the dailies. It’s something you should be doing as part of combat anyway.
- For those who don’t dodge – hey look! Its a new thing I am being taught. Neat. I’m taking less damage! This is a good thing.
If not enough people are dodging – that’s AN’s fault, because that would mean that combat is way to easy. However, this seems unlikely to me, because I know that I would die like 3x more if I wasn’t constantly dodging.
I’m constantly dodging, but the achievement only gives credit if you get the “evaded” text. So, if you dodge pre-emptive (which is most of my dodging….) you don’t get the credit.
I don’t see any reason to go to Southsun Cove. The veterans are barely soloable, the normal trash is hard
I know I’ll get flamed for this (and told to learn how to play), but I agree with this. The foes there are way too hard and you’re really forced to go with a party. Even in Orr (old style), you could move around solo (even though it was slow going due to the enormous amount of Risen…) without too much trouble. In Southsun, it takes way too long to even kill a standard Karka, let alone a veteran one…
its the worst desing place in the history of mankind i never ever liked it ye true i whent there for nodes from time to time but now 0 reasons to go there
I really like the new dailies, but definitely think that ANet should have released the ‘4 of 6’ choice system at the same time. If it wasn’t going to be ready now, they should have just delayed introducing the new dailies until they could both be introduced at once.
Ahh but by not releasing the choice along with the new Dailies, they can make sure all the Dailies get tested instead of the less then choice ones get ignored.
That’s what a public test server is for. But wait, GW2 doesn’t have one. The Live servers shouldn’t be a beta test, nor should the player base sub for the QA department.
To be fair there is a difference between dodging an attack and managing to get the Evade proc. You can dodge early and you still have avoided the attack by no longer being in the area the mob is striking but you don’t proc the Evade and thus it doesn’t count.
Exactly. Dodging early is often BETTER than waiting for the Evade proc. You have that much more time to maneuver or counterattack while your enemy is still in their attack animation.
OTOH, sometimes with ranged attacks timing is more important. But typically, I don’t worry about dodging except for big attacks, to put space between me and my enemy, or to proc other effects (e.g. caltrops, healing). My Thief dodges a lot and has the endurance to do so. My Necro tends to just burn stuff down and uses dodging mainly to make more space while kiting.
Having these daily achievements alters the way people play and not necessarily for the better.
Sorry, if you need to go out of your way and alter your gameplay to get Daily Dodger done, you weren’t playing properly in the first place.
Incorrect. There’s a very big difference between dodging and actually getting evasion to proc, which is required for the achievement.
It’s possible to dodge out of melee range and therefore fail to evade, or to dodge early during a long windup. Both of these are common dodging tactics which, indeed, are typically signs of skilled gameplay. But to specifically get the evade, you must dodge 1) a ranged attack, or 2) while staying in melee range of the enemy attacking. If you’re a ranged character, dodging while deliberately staying in melee range is a bad move.
Saving it for now. Would be nice to have an ingame house so I can hang it on a wall for display though…

I think it will likely work much better with the future plans where we can pick to do only some, rather than all, of the requirements. That is the part keeping me hopeful about the whole thing.
I totally agree. When (if?) they do it, I will take my words back. I don’t understand why wouldn’t they include it into this update while still implementing the new system.
I am sorry to sound all negative, but I don’t really like where this is going. Not one little bit. Seriously, I love this game and I enjoy playing it. You know why? Because it does not try to force me into a certain way of playing. Instead, it allows me to choose. Well, it DID at least.
Who in the world thought this new dailies system was a good idea? Up until now they were not intrusive: just come and play, you will eventually get it. You were getting rewarded for playing, and that is how it’s supposed to be done. Who was the person, who came and said: "You know what? Let’s not reward people for playing as they like! Let’s artificially force them to do stuff they have no reason for doing! How about that? Oh, they don’t agree? Too bad, no rewards for ’em today! "
This may seem a minor thing. I mean, dailies are not the most important part of the game. However, these kinds of minor things do make me wonder where this game is headed to, and I can’t say I like what I see. Forcing people to play together? Forcing to craft? Is that your way of involving players into an every aspect of your game, instead of actually making the stuff interesting, so people would CHOOSE to do it? Well, thanks, but no, thanks. Your idea sucks, Arena.
People play together because they like it. People craft, because it’s useful. People dodge attacks, because that is one way of surviving. If they don’t do that… Well, they DON’T find it entertaining. It is that simple. What’s the point in forcing people to do any of these things just to get a daily reward? I don’t get what you are trying to accomplish here. If that is how “diversity” and “fun” is introduced in this game, I’m afraid I can’t understand your concept of fun. Being encouraged to do mindless tasks just for the sake of doing them is somewhere on the opposite pole of the universe from an actual “fun”.
You just killed a small part of the game for me, pushing it closer towards the mindless grind fest.

So game is built on GW1 engine.
Do you even know what “engine” means?
From wikipedia:
“The core functionality typically provided by a game engine includes a rendering engine (“renderer”) for 2D or 3D graphics, a physics engine or collision detection (and collision response), sound, scripting, animation, artificial intelligence, networking, streaming, memory management, threading, localization support, and a scene graph.”
The engine has almost nothing to do with what skills they put in the game or how the UI is layed out or how many skills they give you access to.
The way skills work in GW2 as opposed to GW1 is entirely a design choice. As many people in this thread have already stated, and (although I don’t have a link or direct quote on hand) as even ANet themselves have stated, while GW1 had a monstrous number of POSSIBLE builds, it had a very low number of VIABLE builds. In GW1, if you weren’t using one of handful of builds, you were seriously gimping yourself.
ANet’s goal with GW2 was to make sure that there were a wide variety of builds that were viable. You can argue all you want about whether this is true or not. And, I would guess that ANet would admit that there are not as many viable builds as they were hoping for. But, I think there are more viable builds than there was in GW1 and I’m sure ANet is actively working on the problem of making more builds viable.
Furthermore, while ANet has not confirmed this for us, I find it highly likely that they will come out with more traits, weapons, and utility skills for the current professions as time goes one. I would expect that these sorts of changes would come in an expansion and the game is less than 6 months old.
No healers, no tanks. Don’t ask for stuff that would ruin the game.
LF2M healer and tank for hours and hours and hours and hours, no sorry, no.
I just wanted to say congratulations on being named the top video game of 2012!
And thank you for making what I consider to be the best video game ever! Looking forward to years of entertainment with Guild Wars 2!

I don’t know why but the survey is not protected and made public accessible for anyone.
You don’t have to be a Guild Wars 2 player to complete.

This may cause false results ….
This post is in regards to the issues myself and many players had when it came to fighting the final boss, and the rather underwhelming response from Anet thus far:
Due to a lack of response on the part of Anet about the Disconnect/Overflow server issues, I’ve gotten to the point where I just don’t care to play anymore. The only thing that really still interested me in GW2 were the events and the thought that things would be more dynamic than previous MMOG titles… and seeing how the company responds to a fumble like this does not inspire me to feel great amounts of hope for future events. All companies make mistakes, but how they respond to those mistakes is as important as anything. How they handled it was a token “We will look into it” post and then nothing. It should have been job one on Monday to figure out what they are planning to do about it, or at least to do more in terms of damage control.
This could have been spun into a PR positive by giving more updates and a very quick response, as well as giving out world-wide rewards to everyone. Imagine if, as a kind of apology gift, they gave every one who logged in during the event 100 free gems, or a BLTC key, or a Consortium Chest? Then, on top of that they spend all day Monday figuring out how to “make right” the issues with people who were unable to finish the Ancient Karaka event, posting about it multiple times so that customers knew they were getting some attention paid to them. All of a sudden, they go from looking like just another gaming company to one that really cares about its fanbase. This would have likely received a high degree of praise from the gaming press and been touted as how a developers should handle a bad situation. Their losses would be negligible, and the long term return on investment in terms of customer goodwill would be highly profitable.
In the end, I feel disappointed. Anet is not a bad company, but they are not showing themselves to be great company either. Honestly, I play these games for fun, and I have gotten a lot out of this particular title… but as the time passes without a reply or any sort of real solution offered… the more I am finding my desire to continue on in Tyria is waning. This is just my opinion of course, and I offer it in the hopes that someone on the Anet team will read it and be able to use it to really improve their handling of future missteps. I also really hope that their response to this situation is enough to make me go, “Wow, was I ever wrong. I need to learn to be quiet!” Until then though, this is my opinion.

I’m also hoping. I don’t even expect them to come along with a page-long posting right away, but the least they could do is a short announcement like “We heard you and we will come back to you with a blog post later this week”. But nope, instead they use their time to post Quaggan videos on Twitter.
PS: Well written post, fellow Tyrian!

My overall opinion is that, in the game’s current state, pushing out new content like Lost Shores monthly is simply too ambitious.
The game was only released a couple of months ago – player housing, guesting, culling issues, and a multitude of bug problems still exist. Releasing broken new content without fixing what’s already broken in the existing content isn’t going to go anywhere.
I suggest focusing on fixing the already existing issues before pushing out content like this. Because of this, the content released has been buggy and hasn’t helped the game’s reputation at all. By fixing already broken content, you’d be able to focus fully on the new content instead of spreading yourself thin over so many issues that need to be fixed.
Again, just my opinion…wondering if anyone else feels the same.
Pros:
- Fractals solve many design issues other dungeons have.
- New island is harder than other high-end locations → good direction, I expect even harder content in the open world in the future.
- One time events that change the world are cool idea.
Cons:
- Because of the event you made no progress on 8 dungeons which are completely broken.
- New crafting resources and no collection’s bank tab?
- New crafting resources not in-line with old ones?
- How it is possible, that there are sigils and traits in the game that don’t work, and yet you add new island? How it is possible that most of the areas in the game lacks content or has content that is broken, and you add dynamic events to newly developed zone?
- Your execution of one time event was pathetic. Both technically and design-wise. I agree with most of the complaits you see on forum on this subject. Currently WoW which is static old fashioned quest based game, does the stuff better with phasing. You need to re-think your approach on this subject. One example: Explain me this: Why after 400h of play, doing dozens of really hard jumping puzzles, finishing most paths in your dungeons and finishing personal story, having 3 crafting disciplines on 400 and generally exploring a lot of the locations in the world and doing generally speaking the hardest content you have available in the game I got less rewards overall, than standing and doing nothing for 2h during the event (I got such huge lags that I couldn’t even execute my skills). (Earring and Bag are most valuable items I currently have on my character).
I expect that you finish the game. No more adding major content before the game shines. Bugfixes section of the patch notes was pathetic! Guild Wars 2 was not ready for the release and you made some promises that you did not fulfill. I’d recommend you start working on that because I’m quitting the game if next patch notes look similar to the last ones.
In short, lost shores is some of the worst “content” I have ever seen in over ten years of MMO experiences.
Bug ridden, lag filled, exclusionary, and worst of all many folks spent hours on it and got no rewards at all. Others, who had the ability to play at Areanet’s convenience and were lucky enough not to get bugged or disconnected, got rewards worth more gold than than many folks will ever see in the game.
I can not think of a worst way to treat customers.
This event would have been better off just adding Fractals and nothing else. The actual “event” was one of the worst I’ve seen in over 12 years of playing MMOs. Either lower the overflow population or just make these event’s instanced for a group of you and your friends. We don’t need 50 people in a zerg pile ruining the game. It’s not impressive.
I was all for the new traditional MMO map design and going away from the GW1 method of all combat zones being instanced… But this event made me miss GW1 method. Worst thing I’ve ever seen in GW2 to date.
And I’m not complaining about graphics from this event. I maintained 30-40 FPS with everything on max. But the server lag was unbearable. Eventually I just went AFK and let everyone else clear the zone and just participated in the finale to get the chest.
Please learn from your mistakes Arena Net. Being in denial and saying this was a decent event is just going to make you fail again on the next one. Clearly your game can’t handle mass amounts of people in close proximity (Which has been proven since launch in WvW) so make the events on a smaller scale.
“That big kitten Norn with The Juggernaut”
Lets start positive.I embrace all the new stuff and I am grateful.Loved the new instance/zone/puzzle everything.
However, the bugs that were never fixed and the constant lag were the WORST experience in the game SO FAR.Not only I couldnt attent the event due to lag but I couldnt even play the game due to it as well. There was lag all over tyria which I think its unnacceptable.Manage better your servers!Do more testing idk do smth.As the days were passing the lag was becoming unbearable. Not allowed
Not to mention the unfair rewards that a 1 time should NOT give.Anyways, thats the least.
All in all, I hope a lesson has been taught to you Anet, and I hope you will not repeat the same mistakes in the future.Forgiven since its the first time.
It appears Anet dropped the ball on this event — badly.
Phase 3 with the number and strength of mobs required massive amounts of players with the server side culling were a recipe for disaster. Entire ‘zergs’ of players were wiped out by mobs that had been culled. So basically it was impossible to have fun with this phase of the event. I always understood the developmental goals of Anet for GW2 to be fun and not grindy in the virtual world of Tyria. But Phase 3 was exactly the opposite, not fun, hours of killing npcs that didn’t show up on screens until people were dead.
A number of my guildies, who are normally fanboys/fangirls were calling this the worst event in their gaming careers. Who have played WoW, Aion, SWG, TOR, UO, and EQ1/2 depending on their ages.
My question is why with knowing the culling issue had surfaced in WvW and earlier phases, is why was this pushed as it was implemented? This event and the ascended gear changes and a free trial? Had I been a person on free trial, basing whether I was staying on these weekend’s event, I would have uninstalled the game and never looked back.
Here are my (mostly negative) thoughts about the lost shore and a bit of (hopefully constructive feedback:
Rushed content
Please take your time in developing the content so it doesn’t bug out. You don’t really need to run events like this every month if they are buggy. Take your time. People will come back for them even if they have left.
Communication
ArenaNet is probably the worst company I’ve yet to see when it comes to communication. No real info about what to expect from different phases. No info about problems either. No mails, no server messages, no nothing. You had to leave the game to actually receive any info and even then it was stingy.
- Suggestion1: Please list what we are to expect from each phase. You don’t need to go into details. Just mention things like “join us in a phase 3 for a chance to get some epic loot” and “join us in a phase 1 for a one time cinematic invasion”.
- Suggestion2: When problems pop up don’t just leave people hanging. Send an ingame email /update the event description explaining that there are problems and you are working on a fix. Give estimates on timeframe and update them as necessary.
- Sugestion3: Make it more clear where an event starts and when it ends. Phase two for example was very confusing. Phase one wasn’t much better.
One time events with big rewards are bad
People have stressed this a lot. Don’t put the big rewards behind a single one time event. Especially when it’s guaranteed that a lot of people will miss them. At least don’t put all good rewards behind it.
- Suggestion1: Reward a single token for participating any of the event phases which people can turn in for an exotic/unique/interesting reward. It shouldn’t be too difficult to make a reward chest similar to the ancient karka which unlocks with a token. This rewards even those who have very little time and can join just one of the “one time only” events.
- Suggestion2: Spread out the good/unique stuff on multiple tasks. Give a token for participating any one of the event phases which can be turned into random exotic. Reward an unique item from the scavenger hunt (i.e. the “karka ring”). Allow turning smaller collectible tokens you gather into useful stuff like the box etc etc.
Culling problems
Culling made the big fights hard. It’s not fun to die from enemies you can’t see. You run forward to a spot that looks empty and suddenly you find yourself dead. A moment after a champion karka phases in – it had been there all the time but your client just didn’t show it. This and lag made the event frustrating.
- Suggestion1: Please consider splitting the “main event” into 3-4 simultaneous events so people will spread out more. There could have been multiple events simultaneously starting on different parts of LA / Cove (depending on phase) leading to a single “final battle”.
The good
Skipping stones is very fun! The new dungeon is very fun (except swamp)! More stuff like this and I’m happy. Also please add dolphin racing minigame / “jumping puzzle” into the game!
Thanks for reading.

Firstly thank you at Anet for the Lost Shores event; clearly a lot of effort and hard work went into designing the new zone and dungeon and I’m sure my family and I will have a lot of fun there in time to come. We all love the game, and the problems with Lost Shores will not change that, even if we might be a little peeved at the moment.
I’ll +1 the comments of the many people who had lag problems and got disconnected in the final event, but if you do manage to sort out some sort of reward – just the 20-slot Karka Chest would make me a lot happier on this front – that would be OK
My main point is that I think Anet missed an opportunity in the gem store with this event. Where were the new skins and town clothes for sale? All we could buy were RNG chests with poor odds of getting anything exciting at over £2 per chest. I’m not into gambling and simply won’t buy this sort of content – makes me feel like the sad people in corner shops who spend their money on cigarettes and scratchcards.
In contrast, I have spent quite a bit of money on gems for myself and my sons (four players in our household so far and two more sons who will be old enough to play in the next few years) in order to buy actual products such as costumes, character slots, minipets etc. In Guild Wars (1) I bought every costume in the store and various other products. But I won’t buy a virtual lottery ticket where I’m likely to be wasting my money.
Now – if you make sure with each event you have some actual products in the gem store – nice skins, new minipets, new services like character modification etc, in addition to chests, you would make money out of someone like me every time. If there are only the chests, then you won’t.
