In fact, I really hope that the development team considers this for future encounters. Create situations that let players voluntarily take on extra risks and responsibilities commensurate with their skill level, without forcing new/less confident players into situations where they fear they will let down the team.

At the moment, I have absolutely no clue what the heck is happeinign inside Anet’s development team. They seem to have writers but…what are those writers actually doing.

I do not wish to offend anyone but I can’t see the current story being the work of a professional writer. Its disjointed, it lacks character progression, and the worst part of it: it gives the ‘reader’ zero-interest to find out more. I know that the best storytellers masterfully always gives the reader just enough information to intrigue them but never let you know everything even at the very end, but the story in this case seems to be going nowhere at all. You don’t have a clue why anything is happening.

The problem is that I think the devs actually don’t really know what they;re going to do with the LS. I’m sure they can see that lore-wise, the LS isn’t working.

If they place major lore into it, like the dragons, then that’s that pice of major lore used up. They’re still experimenting, and thus seems reluctant to put any ‘serious’ lore into these updates.

Personally, I think they should just take what Jagex does with RuneScape and just apply it here. They’ve been basically doing this living world thing for a decade, and their approach works.

Solution to the Scarlet Problem

How about, even if Scarlet is behind the tower, not have her show up – remember the Molten Alliance? She didn’t show up there. Let’s have more of that.

Or, let’s go the simple route. Solution to Scarlet? 1 bullet. 1 gun. 1 good aim. You do the math.

I’d rather have something build up and improvement to Scarlet, than just killing her outright. I’m kind of tired of Anet sweeping their “failures” under the rug by blatantly ridding them (and the failure with Scarlet is less the character and more the story development and showing – which the new Tower of Nightmare shows hopes of improvement there) – they’ve done it a lot. I mean, what was their response to the charr armor clippings? “They’re not popular, so we won’t take care of it for a while.” (Ever wonder why they’re not popular? Maybe a major armor clipping being in your face the entire time playing the character has something to do with it…).

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

Part 2:

The removal of culling was a very welcome update, but the game still lags horribly on full maps. WvW on reset night is a nightmare. I realize server optimization is a difficult problem, but it’s been a year.

Speaking of WvW, the Bloodlust addition is Orbs 2.0. It was, I think, supposed to discourage zerging and give roamers and small groups something to do, but I have mixed feelings about how it’s working in practice. I think it has, at least, made WvW a little more dynamic, but it’s done little to change the underlying dynamics of zerging that many complain about. And the W-exp buffs are simply unfair: character bound, fairly powerful, hard to obtain without participating in the capture train for W-exp, which further encourages zerging. The entire reward structure leaves much to be desired.

Communication with the community is abysmal. Anet keeps its people on a very tight leash. They do not interact much with the community on the forums or anywhere, and when they do, it’s usually in the form of canned, sanitized responses. There is much ambiguity and very little honesty. They frequently announce changes which garner a large negative reaction and implement them anyway, without discussion or modification.

Anet would probably say that I should appreciate what has already been fixed or added to the game, that I should be patient, that they are trying to do more than other games and things move more slowly overall as a consequence. I would agree with them, but I think that trying to be too much for too many is becoming, increasingly, a detriment to the game instead of a benefit. It has been very profitable for them so far, and the so-called “casual player” will appreciate the diversity of activities and play styles that are available, but I think more dedicated players are left wanting more depth and polish.

It’s not that I think there has been no positive development since launch. The dungeon reward revamp I sort of like, because it diminished the primacy of CoF p1; on the other hand, DR on dungeon tokens was met with justified criticism. The wallet and UI improvements were not bad. I haven’t tried the LFG tool yet, but it’s also good to have in the game. And so on. However, I’ll say again: I think the game is trying to do too much.

I have tried to be as constructive as possible in my criticism here. GW2 was an excellent value for money and I would buy it again. I am writing this post because I still like the game and think it has potential to be really great, but I think a lack of transparency and direction is causing it to suffer. I welcome your responses.

Recently, there was a post on reddit.com/guildwars2 that expressed a lot of what I’m currently feeling about the game. It stayed on the front page for a bit and generated a fair amount of discussion. It’s largely criticism of the game, but also largely polite and thoughtful. And, while it’s a small sample size compared to the total population, I believe it resonates with what many players have been saying there, here, and in-game. I hope that players and Anet employees will read it, with an open mind, and not dismiss it out of hand for being criticism. Please remember to keep any discussion civil and thoughtful!

I originally posted just a link, but it was moved. So I’m copying the content in the hope that it will have more exposure:

I thought GW1 was one of the more innovative and enjoyable games of its time. Sadly, I am coming to dislike GW2 and the direction the game is headed. After a year of playing, the problems that I see are:

Much was promised before launch that was eventually scrapped or toned down. Renown Hearts and Karma vendors were greatly simplified. The much-hyped Living World consists of a few event chains and does not seem to be progressing to anything beyond the somewhat-incoherent “Living Story”. PvP as an e-Sport never materialized, although that’s not entirely Anet’s fault.

The personal story was supposed to be very dynamic depending on player choices along the way, but it’s more like choosing from among a small number of set paths through the game, and after a certain point they converge anyway. And the story in general is lackluster, the writing and voice acting sub-par. There is nothing really memorable about Trahearne or any member of Destiny’s Edge; I barely know who they are. The final fight with Zhaitan is unsatisfying.

Like GW1, the game was supposed to NOT be a grind; however, with Ascended gear and (increasingly) character-bound rewards, it feels like it’s becoming more of one, not less.

Classes seem to be balanced around PvP, which almost no one plays, leading to issues in PvE and WvW. And some seem to be favored by the dev team, like warrior, while in a recent talk they couldn’t even find a ranger minor trait that many people run and which hasn’t moved since launch. Engineer has many bugs from launch which are still unfixed. In GW1, I played a ranger, a monk, and a mesmer, and each class felt like it had a unique and important role to play in both PvE and PvP. And the builds for each were so much more varied; there were many more possibilities for how to play each class.

It feels like the frequency of content updates is stretching Anet’s resources thin. And the rewards for participating in that content are often lackluster: minis, achievements, consumables. Although, with some of that being recurring content (like Dragon Bash or Halloween) which will probably require less development in the future, hopefully next year more resources will be available for other aspects of the game.

Every balance update seems to introduce more bugs than it fixes. The improved tool-tips from the latest patch look very good, but they contain so many inconsistencies and inaccuracies that I think I would have preferred those resources go to fixing existing bugs. We’ve been promised a major re-working of trait lines that has yet to happen. For a game that promises you can play how you want, most (or all) classes are pigeon-holed into a small number of builds/roles at more skilled levels of play.

Just kill Scarlet and be done with it please.

When you have to use a conjured weapon and it does more damage and completely negates your classes special function, your class, ele, is kittening broken.

When your highest spike dps build revolves around a trait allowing you to abuse another trait for direct damage (ie: fresh air builds), your kittening class is broken.

When your skill tabs for fire and air state they are for heavy damage, damage which hasn’t been seen since beta, your kittening class is broken.

When your traits in every trait line generally punish your class for using its own special function, your class is kittening broken.

When you give a class the lowest armor and health, and consistently raise cooldowns, and lower damage and still expect it to have the highest skill ceiling, your class is kittening broken.

When you implement a class so complicated that it has no hope of being properly balanced against the rest of the remedial classes, your kittening game is broken on a fundamental level.

I will make no apologies for being rude about how things stand. I spent a lot of money for my collectors edition. I spent a lot of money in game. I can’t even log into this pile of dairy queen dog kitten swirl anymore for longer than 20 minutes without feeling sick about how kittening stupid a person has to be to make so many handicapped decisions on balancing.

The only reason this kitten pile is still installed is because I really enjoyed the first GW, and I spent a fair chunk of change on this one. At this point, I can’t justify spending anymore more money on this game, or any future expansions. Eventually I’ll finally give in, pile the collectors edition in the trash, uninstall, and move on for good. I keep coming back and hoping its worth another look, so far its just more trash piled on more trash. I see the gem store is really taking off though, that’s just kittening grand.

Please just pull the plug on the LS. With all due respect, the LS has a number of problems, not just in its execution, but in its basic concept and, frankly, has done little but worked tirelessly to sabotage this game’s success from day one:

1. It is inconsistent with the launch content and creates cognitive dissonance with the PS and launch dungeons. Why would all of that be ‘static’ but character-driven when everything since is ‘living’ and development-driven? It interferes too much with suspension of disbelief for anyone who’s nerdy enough to pay attention to it (me). The world doesn’t actually feel alive, it just feels like content is rushed in then yanked out for no particular reason.

2. The fast release cycle without even so much as a test realm means rushed, buggy content, which just goes without saying as being bad for the game and its reputation.

3. The constant release-pull-release-pull is a massive development vacuum that continuously diverts resources away from development that would result in actual growth, which any MMO needs to stay fresh. Over a long period of time, the game suffers immensely and has little to show for it compared to traditional content updates, which fuels disinterest for both veteran and lapsed players.

4. The content so far at least has had a very ‘flavor of the month’ vibe which fragments the overarching narrative and makes the world feel shallow. In part because of this shallowness, the releases also become trite very quickly, which helps drive further disinterest. This is a total shame because the world of Tyria is very interesting and has the potential to feel very deep and immersive if they could just do a better job of presenting the right lore in the right way and drawing players into a deeper, interconnected story.

5. Rushed, time-gated content release after release is just incredibly annoying. Completionists get frustrated and abandon the game, casuals don’t really get to experience it, and hardcore players don’t find it interesting enough to bother with. In short, it’s an epic fail for everyone that isn’t just in love with it for some arbitrary reason, which is almost certainly a minority of the players.

6. The business model to an extent encourages periodic, recurrent play rather than persistent play. When a player who lapsed a couple months back logs in to see what’s changed (which is common), they don’t see much except for a bunch of archived achievements they can’t get now, therefore they immediately check back out of the game. The hemorrhaging of players is another self-perpetuating snowball.

I care about this game immensely but, despite a few solid releases, it has been on the wrong track since launch. I do remain cautiously optimistic that year two will be better than year one, but you need to seriously get it together with the way the game is being developed.

Hi, everyone. Just wanted to pass on some comments from Angel herself:

Angel McCoy, Narrative Designer

Hi, everybody!
I thought I’d drop in under a flag of sincerity and respond to some of the comments I’m seeing here. You all are so passionate about both Guild Wars and GW2 lore: it does my heart good. Thanks for being so completely awesome and for putting so much of yourselves into your discussions of the lore.

To better frame my comments and because many of you aren’t familiar with me: I’ve been working on GW2 for 5 years and 9 months. Prior to my employment, I was a GW player for several years. I did some freelance at that time for ArenaNet to help write a GW atlas that never actually got published, but it meant that I spent a lot of time learning the world. My point is that I love Tyria every bit as much as you do, and I’ve dedicated almost as much time as many of you have to it.

I completely understand the outrage some of you feel, thinking that I’ve retconned things in a vacuum. I’d like to give you some peace of mind. Prior to my sending it off, the interview you read received a thumbs up from Bobby Stein, Ree Soesbee, Jeff Grubb, and Scott McGough. I do not work in a bubble, and if I’m releasing that much lore, then I’m going to do my best to ensure I’m getting it right. And it definitely feels like I’m sticking my neck out in the effort. No pressure. Hehe.

When you are working in a world that is as huge as Tyria and that has had as many lore creators as Tyria has, it can be difficult to make all the pieces fit perfectly together. And yet, we do the best we can.

————-

So, let me explain where some of these lore decisions came from. They and many others are based on the following needs:

1. The fact that GW2 takes place 250 years in the future after GW.

2. The added complications that come with GW2 being non-human-centric. We’re no longer telling a human story, but a multiracial story, and that means only one of five races have the “gods” as part of their world construct. The lore needs to not only make sense for all races, but actually be relevant to them.

3. We want to evolve the lore, not rewrite it, but not just recycle what was already there either. We want to reveal new layers in the onion and expose secrets that even GW players didn’t know.

————-

When you think of the history of Tyria from a non-human standpoint or, broader still, from a pan-racial standpoint, you begin to realize that not everything the people of Tyria believed 250 years ago is actually the whole truth. Just like I was taught in grade school (not quite 250 years ago—hehe) that Christopher Columbus discovered America and Thanksgiving was all about the Pilgrims having turkey dinner with the Native Americans. Just like that, the people of Tyria may have had only a partial or biased view of historic events. Some Tyrian historians might have gotten it wrong. Others might have recorded things in a manner that suited their agenda. Thus, when you quote a scholar from that era, it’s not unlike quoting pre-Socratic scholars in the real world who believed the Earth was flat. At some point, a Durmand Priory scholar or an asuran researcher questioned whether these historians were right or not. Sometimes they were; sometimes they weren’t. Sometimes, they only knew part of the story. We want to give you more of the story.

There is a stream of truth that runs through all previous GW lore, and that stream is what we hope to tap. We are not going to throw away huge bundles of GW lore. Events happened. What you may find evolving, however, are the explanations for why and what exactly did happen. We will NOT handle the lore with cavalier carelessness, I promise you. On the contrary, we spend a great deal of time studying old lore so we can base our expanded lore on it.

Now, let me give you a few confirmations on some of the things you’ve been saying:

> The Seers created the first Bloodstone to set some magic aside during the last rise of the Elder Dragons. They didn’t want to see it all consumed.

> Magic existed long before the first Bloodstone. It has always been a force in the Eternal Alchemy. It was not created by the humans’ gods, no matter what priest or priestess preaches thakittenwas. How you choose to roleplay your character’s beliefs is entirely up to you.

> Humans (including Canthan humans) were brought to Tyria (from…no spoilers!). They are not native to Tyria and did not come with much magic of their own. From a human perspective and oral tradition (that can get warped over time), they say the gods were giving them magic, but the reality was that the dragons had gone back to sleep, and the gods felt it was safe to begin returning magic stored in the Bloodstone to Tyria. The gods (not only Abaddon) “unsealed” the Bloodstone and magic flowed back into the world. Humans and other sentient races of the time began using it.

> Over the course of hundreds of years, wars broke out. King Doric begged the gods to slow the flow of magic back into Tyria and the gods granted his wish by shattering the Bloodstone into pieces and limiting their use. Abaddon was annoyed by this.

For many of us players, it’s only been a couple years since Abaddon’s tantrum, but for Tyrians, it’s been much longer. The gods have been gone. Generations have lived and died. The world’s understanding and control of magic has grown and improved. The understanding of the cosmos (the Eternal Alchemy) has improved. And yet, there’s still so much the people of Tyria don’t know.

250 years ago in our real world, it was 1763. It would be another 12 years before the American Revolution even started. Compare the scientific/medical knowledge and industrial level of the time with how it is today, and you’ll see just how much progress can be made in 250 years. Of course, Tyria hasn’t advanced as quickly as we have. They don’t have cars or Internet or Post-It™ notes. But, their cultures have evolved. They have a greater understanding of how the world works. And, they have better means of communication and travel across long distances. Thus, we can now write more intricate and bigger stories for them.

I wish I could answer each of your questions and concerns, but the reality is that I need to work on the next GW2 Living World release. We’re cruising at 200mph on these releases (to quote Stephen Clarke-Willson). I hope this explanation of our lore philosophy and where our thinking is will help you when you go back and review the pieces of your discussion. Thank you again for your passion! Know that we do pay attention, even if we can’t always take the time to respond to forum discussions like this.

Atleast iZerker with whirl would show the blade trail nicely.

Even iWarden duel wielding Minstrels would look fantastic with the note particles, they would fly all over the place as he spins.

Colin Johanson explains in a PAX 2013 interview about how Ascended came about, because they miscalculated the effort that would be required to get exotics, and states that he intends to ascended to be the only additional equipment tier they add to the game.

Makes no promises, as he states “7 years from now we might turn around and put another tier in, maybe someone else will be in charge of the game”, but really drives home the point that “this should be it” as far as equipment tiers are concerned.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Jy7CcwnfUdU#t=107

My opinion: Big load off my mind. I’m glad that they’re not planning to implement a gear treadmill, and it’s nice to see an official explanation for why ascended happened in the first place, and it’s definitely a reasonable explanation.

Hi, so lately few people with legendary weapons have shown up and today I saw a mesmer with a sunrise. My main is also a mesmer and so far I’m also going for sunrise as I find it to look great and fitting for my me. I myself am far away from legy, but as I noticed mesmers have only 1 skill that looks somehow different while wielding sunrise.

Sorry if there has been already a discussion about this.

I find that to be very unfair and depressing a little. When warriors or guardians use legendary greatswords it just looks amazing, all the visual effects on skills. So why only 1 for mesmers?

Is it that I have misunderstood something and mesmers have more then 1 skill affected by the legy or are not all the animations in yet or developers just didn’t think of mesmers as highly for this matter then other professions?

Point of this thread is to ask you all other mesmers what do you think?

Mesmer: A Plea for Movement Speed

Every class has the capability of being faster than Mesmer.
Ele, Necro, Ranger and Thief have a 25% Movement Speed Signet.
Warrior’s can trait for 25% speed as long as they have a melee weapon equipped.
Guardian’s get a 20 second Swiftness, and an 8 second swiftness on a 15s cooldown (Staff)
Engineers can slot speedy kits, and pretty much have perma swiftness out of combat.

Mesmer’s only movement increase skill is 12 second swiftness on a 25s cooldown and requires a focus be slotted in offhand. This limits build variety, as more often than not you end up in combat when you want to swap weapons. I personally want to dw swords, or sword/pistol, but I find that I’m pretty much required to slot a focus if i want to roam.

Signet of Midnight’s passive is sub-par.
It would be a pretty simple thing to scrap it’s passive effect and give us 25% movement like almost every other class has.

Hey guys, I know recently Ive been kinda slow to respond, distracted in-game, and rather inconsistent.

This past week someone very very close to me suffered a massive heart attack. This weekend we had to let her go.

… It was the hardest thing I ever had to witness. Especially rough since my mother had suffered an aneurysm a few years back and had to go to the same ER (She survived, amazingly. It was painful and took a lot of surgery and rehab but thank god shes recovered nearly fully) . It was like a macabre deja-vu except with the opposite outcome from the first time.

It was the first time something so devastating hit so close to home. Im very sorry if I rekindled any bad memories. Right now we’re scrambling to put funds together and sort everything out. As she was a rather young mother; this was so sudden, unexpected, and unspeakably painful that right now were just trying to make sense of the emotional/logistical chaos.

So if Im off GW for a little while or don’t respond in-game/random AFK thats why. I personally don’t believe in oranized religion, but if you’re the praying-type then your prayers would be well-recieved. (I know theres a greater power out there, but honestly I just believe in doing the right thing and not being a hypocrite.. Everything else is noise)

Edit: You guys are in-freakin’-credible. I never imagined I’d ever become so invested in a forum community so much to go on to write guides (which I’ve never done anything close to before) and give tips and help.. But I really couldn’t have expected so much feedback and support returned tenfold. The responses in mail and in this thread brought embarrassing man-tears to my eyes.

This gets repeated often, but we really do have one of the best, most communal forums on this site. From the the All-Mesmer meets, to the ridiculously overdramatic names we throw on our builds, the [OMFG] Guild and the amount of respect we all show eachother… most days.

(Got infracted for raising money and mods deleted my ENTIERE thank you edit. -_- Yet, they won’t sticky OMFG)

I don’t even know where to start. I suppose I should say that I’ve always wanted Guild Wars 2, ever since release, but my life at that time was not having it. I recently realized how I’ve managed to pull myself around, and how much I missed mmos. I used to play World of Warcraft avidly for many years, but my hectic life slowly slid me away from it, as well as being burnt out. I tried over and over to immerse myself into Azeroth, but nothing worked, not even a roleplaying server (which is strange since I’m huge into lore and writing – people just were so exclusive about their rp!). So, I quit.

Thats when I realized… Guild Wars 2 was still going strong, and growing! This was my chance! It was with eager impatience that I waited for the game to install and when it did… I was so very, very happy.

New lands to explore, better opportunities to play with others… the lands are beautiful and the character customization had me stumped for an hour. The events are plentiful and amazing, the story so open and free but with just enough linear progress to keep you moving in the right direction. I’m still clueless about crafting, but for now I’m focused on questing and learning the lore – currently of the Sylvari!

I’m very eager to progress Maliel and make him the best he can be. I know I’m going to have fun while doing it! I still have so much to learn, and as a veteran mmo player, this excites me. I’m still rather shy around others and haven’t a guild yet, but someday. For now I’m simply a rogue, a silent hero that appears mid-fight to help and that bows and leaves silently after. A true shadow, but I hope that will change!

Thanks for such a good game, its the relief I sorely needed, haha. If you see a Sylvari named Maliel Riverwind running around, give him a wave!

We ask for balance and the developers snarl

Can we get some love for warriors they are starting to envy?

Then will you buff sword, axes, or hammers?

hmm. did you even watch the video? you know the one that this thread is based on.

there is no patch. they were theorycrafting ideas to try to balance classes and this is one of the ideas to stop thieves from perma stealthing. there has been no testing in any way of this idea and this would only come along side buffs that were mentioned in the same conversation. this nerf to stealth was a side note in a conversation based on buffing thieves skirmishing ability.

if a thief dies to retaliation or confusion it is not a problem with the class as much as it is an issue with the player.

this same conversation talked about giving thieves boon hate. the same conversation talked about buffing thieves to make them better at entering and exiting combat then the current elementalist is.
