Every dawn after I wake I kneel beside my bed and pray.
" Remember to always place your trust in the Holy Trinity of DPS.
May Power, the Father grant you His Might to rain death in the form of large numbers on top of your enemies.
May Precision, the Son, with His Fury guide your blades into the flimsiest of their armor.
Though fallen, may Ferocity, the Holy Spirit, imbue you and magnify the virtues of both, the Father and the Son, so that your blows may fall heavy on your foes taking on the shape of more hard-hitting crits.
Spared and blessed be the followers of the Assassin that, though slightly bent on their ways, share our vision of smooth and efficient speedruns.
May you never degenerate and fall and be led astray to the misguided ways of the Rampager, or the nefarious path of the Soldier, or the wretched lanes of the Rabid.
May your faith in the Berserker never falter, your Fury never quenched, and your Might always stacked to 25.
For Great Justice!
Amen."

At the nursery at work I pray over the sleeping babies begging the Lord to grant his might onto their low levels.

On the train I beseech my fellow man to follow the ways of the berserker.
I say unto him “And the seventh angel doth poured his vial onto the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, IT IS BERSERKER

So how can you say that “zerker” isn’t a build when it’s clearly PART of a build?

Didn’t you just answer your own question?

Anet just add Precursor vendor!

Vendor? No thank you.

I’d rather have account bound on acquire item drops that drop from specific foes tied to the precursors that must then be combined in another location (similar to spawning the Mysterious Fire Creature in Mount Maelstrom) which gives one-time access to an instance (similar to the Nightmare Chamber instances) which you can enter and go through a short quest to get a guaranteed drop of a Precursor. The drops, and locations, would thus be tied to the lore behind the precursors and legendaries, giving that long-desired question an answer.

For example, to get the Tooth of Frostfang, you’d need to get a RNG drop from the Veteran Dragon Shaman in Dredgehaunt Cliffs, one of the three Shamans of Ice/Frost/Hail, one of the three Drakkar Spur champions, and “the Icebrood Atrocity.”http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Defeat_the_Icebrood_Atrocity Then combine them at a new interactive object where Claw of Jormag lands, which gives you an item like the Hall of Monuments Portal Stone that takes you to a unique instance in Drakkar Spurs, ending with a fight against a unique icebrood and completing the instance rewards Tooth of Frostfang.

That would be FAR more preferable – though perhaps not challenging enough – than some mere “buy from a vendor” BS.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

If you’re playing a horrible build, then you’re not competitive. You don’t need to play a certain way but you should be playing to strengths and weaknesses. There are very much ROLES in PvP to fill.

You’re probably losing because you’re looking too much at ‘killing people’ and not enough at winning the match. Your kills =/= your performance. Your personal score =/= being a good team player. How you cap, defend, and occupy your enemies is more important.

I know you probably don’t want to hear this, but you’re probably just bad right now. That’s alright. You started off and maybe you don’t have PvP experience in similar games. Just means you will need to practice. A huge part of winning against other players is learning your class and learning their class too.

You should get to where you can see a certain class with a certain weapon set or passive set skills and be able to make some predictions about their playstyle, role, etc… Really good players keep track of enemy cast times, cool downs, etc… and are able to force people to play into their advantage.

If it’s overwhelming, just play some matches and get to learn what you’re doing. Do some solo-que or hot joins. A lot of really bad, uncoordinated players on there will get your familiar with how some classes play without much risk of getting smashed.

I am sure some very good players are on these forums to advise better than I can. Good luck.

The megaserver system is still less than a week old. As with anything new, people will flock to events and megabosses until they get tired of it and move on. Give it some time and see how it goes.

If they’re still not doable in a month, then come back and complain.

But players can put in all the hard work they can and still not break through to the next level. People have limits and thresholds.

I recognize this. I don’t expect every player, or even a majority to improve their skills. The hope is that ENOUGH of them will that we will be able to create more creative and nuanced content.

Wish Anet would stop making raid content altogether.

Setting aside the misnomer, I’d just like to point out that if everyone had their wishes and Anet stopped making content that didn’t appeal to them, Anet could not make any content. The PvPers would negate the PvE, PvE negates WvW, WvW negates PvP, etc. Think of an MMO like a newspaper. Some people only read the comics. Some only want the sports page. Some like all the parts, but enjoy the local news the most, etc.

But I still know where my limit is, and if this trend continues, I will be excluded from the new content, very soon.

Perhaps this is the root of your problem. You feel like we don’t want or like you. First of all, that’s not true. There is no trend to exclude any particular kind of player. Please look over the past year of LW releases. We’ve done so many different kinds of content specifically so that we can excite the various kinds of players out there. Out of the dozens of releases we’ve had two dedicated to open world bosses. We’ve done some WvW, some PvP, some Dungeons, some holidays, some JPs, etc. When I say I hope the overall player-base skill can be brought up, it’s not because all our future content will be uniformly more difficult. It’s just so that the stuff we are making for those who like to be challenged can be more complex and interesting. That should not exclude you any more than the occasional WvW, PvP or JP content would. I guess you consider that “muddled”. I consider it nicely diverse.

I play the game to have fun, not to become better at something….If something tries to change me then it means it does’t accept me as a player??? so is the GW2 player base not accepted within ANet’s walls that now we have to change?

Some people only have fun WHEN they are learning and displaying mastery of skill. If you are not like that, cool. No problem. We love and accept you just as you are. We made most of our game content for you! Don’t ever change. Seriously, there’s room for all of us here.

ANet is spot on the money. PvE has been far too easy for far too long and it’s spoiled players into thinking that anything that requires effort = too much effort.

That’s not really the message I hope this kind of content sends. I don’t think anyone is “spoiled” for wanting to chill out and not be challenged in their virtual world. It’s their time off, I’m happy to help to provide that blissful state. My only concern is that we are not then obligated to create nothing but blissful relaxation. There’s enough room in Tyria for all kinds.

Nothing about the new content teaches players how to play better, it just requires that they DO play better,

That’s a fair point. Thanks. I’ll think about how to incorporate better direction in future content.

It’s not really fair to the rest of us decent players who are able to successfully clear our platforms EACH AND EVERY time, and then watch us fail overall because one or two platforms fail.

Yes. If I could change one thing it would be better support to under-performing platforms.

We did it!!!

To clear the air about Berserker

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Blood Red Arachnid.2493

Blood Red Arachnid.2493

There are 3 berserker threads on the front page now, and all 3 of them are littered with the same stuff:

People arguing with each other about how is a worse human being.
People threatening to quit if Anet does/doesn’t make changes to berserker
People are throwing insults back and forth
People complaining about how GW2 should/shouldn’t be like GW1
People having no idea what the issue is.

Hopefully, this thread will help to clear the air a bit. Now, from an non-partial standpoint (I am neither casual or elite), I will explain what the problem is, and more importantly, what the problem is not.

Section 1: What the problem is.

The whole zerker problem isn’t obvious to the casual observer. In fact, it isn’t obvious to the devs, either, which is why there is a “problem” to begin with. The “problem” itself is actually multi-faceted, so it will take some time to explain.

As you know, the game is designed on the premise that you can play as you want. This is meant to mean that a player could choose a particular style in which to play, and not have to suffer from being restricted in their chosen class to play, the style in which they play that class, or the race that was chosen to play. This is in stark contrast to what most other MMOs have, which require some kind of trinity system for cohesive groups, specific races running specific classes to accomplish their classes goal, and inflexible class design that shoehorns players into doing only one thing with that class and that race.

Now, this goal to play how you want comes predicated on several conditions that are hard to fulfill, but nonetheless are necessary for such a system to truly work. The goals, of course, is to encourage equality among different equipment loadouts as to objectively encourage build diversity. Anet has, for the most part, accomplished these goals by doing the following, but has made a few mistakes.

#1: By having small ratios between damage and survivability, the game is not heavily emphasizing one or the other, and thus everyone can both survive and do damage at the same time.

#2: By including the dodge and the heal skill, there exists a form of defense that works independent of all circumstances, allowing a player to always be capable of defending themselves that does not involve stats.

#3: Support and control utilities also act independent of stats, allowing players to fulfill multiple roles even within the same equipment set.

#4: By introducing the down state, this makes all classes and builds capable of large scale healing, as well as introducing a wider margin of error in combat.

#5: By having players heal automatically outside of combat, a player is ultimately not dependent on any outside influence for sustenance, instead requiring a player to merely survive an encounter before continuing on. This has other benefits, too, but they aren’t pertinent.

So, what is the problem then? Well, Anet failed to account for balancing around dodging and utilities being statless (#3), and following basic enemy design has led to an environment where, regardless of circumstances and many times even regardless to player skill, it is always best to equip yourself in pure DPS gear.

That is not good, because it leads to no one being happy. Those who do gear themselves for maximum damage (objectively superior overall) find the game easy and unrewarding, because content cannot be balanced around only the pure DPS playstyle. Those who do not gear themselves for pure DPS have to constantly deal with the pressures and difficulties of being objectively inferior, and suffer greatly each time Anet “compromises” between the two, or balanced rewards off of the most efficient instead of the average player.

Section 2: What causes this problem specifically?

This comes down to how damage, active defense, and enemy offense behaves. Now, there is a saying I used to hear around City of Heroes, and it holds true here as well:

Death is the ultimate debuff.

The best thing you can do to any enemy is kill it. A dead enemy does no damage, does not heal, does not debuff, and does not block attacks. The faster something is dead, the faster you get money from it, and the faster you can go and do something else.

There is an often overlooked aspect to damage: the faster you do damage, the more durable you are indirectly because of the fact. For example, assume it takes 10 seconds for you to kill an enemy, and it does damage to you during this 10 seconds. If, say, you built yourself to do double the damage, but take double the damage, you’d end up taking the same amount of damage because the enemy will live only half as long.

I don’t have opinions. I only have facts I can’t adequately prove.

Make Terrace Passes infinitely redeemable

Kamui.3150

Frankly, this item should work exactly like the Hall of Monuments stone, IMO. If you have a permanent pass in inventory (AKA the first time the character goes into the Terrace) then have one of the vendors in the Terrace “sell” an item for 0 copper that works exactly like the perm Royal Pass, but requires you to have the perm one already in inventory. This way you’ll need to put the real pass onto a character the first time they go to the Terrace, but after that they can keep the voucher in inventory at all times, which for all intents and purposes (double click to teleport, allows entry) works just like the perm Royal Pass itself.

If this functionality were included, I would instantly snap up the permanent pass, until it’s there, though, I’m gonna pass on the pass.

Defending Trahearne - might not be his fault

in Personal Story

Posted by: Arikyali.5804

Arikyali.5804

Everyone dislikes the poor guy, saying he stepped in and took the limelight. I can see how that is unless you’ve played from a Sylvari’s point of view, when you meet him as early as the second part of your personal story.

But…what if it’s not Trahearne’s fault that he is such an unlikable character? I had my second Sylvari go through the personal story, and found some interesting dialogue.

The Sylvari storyline with the Orders of Tyria involves the task of retrieving the sword Caladbolg. It’s considered to be a living weapon, where it enhances the qualities of its wielder – strength, honor, wisdom, bravery, etc. This goes true for negative qualities as well. The second owner of the sword, Waine, was considered a coward, and that quality was only enhanced by wielding the sword. He was arrogant and selfish. He also gets very intimidated when put in a situation the sword couldn’t fight him out of.

After Caladbolg was retrieved, the Pale Tree eventually gave it to Trahearne.

But does this mean Trahearne was just a glory-stealing, overly prideful shrub the whole time? Nope, I don’t think so.

Trahearne is a meek scholar. Before he got the sword, he doesn’t want to fight. Quoted directly from the story dialogue: “My knowledge of the undead will be useful, but I’m no general. I’ll follow behind, and revive those who fall.”

Follow behind. The main character. And remain out of sight. He’s just there to assist. My Sylvari gets to run into the army of undead, swinging Caladbolg with a fearsome battle cry, and lead an army of Vigil Soldiers to victory.

Trahearne was always there to assist. He never liked fighting undead. When he goes to Orr, he observes them from a distance. And he definitely doesn’t like taking a lead role in battle. Before he got the sword, whenever the subject of ‘taking charge’ came up, he tries to come up with explanations that he’s just a scholar, not a fighter.

So, by that logic, it doesn’t make sense, does it? He shouldn’t have turned into what many people see as an overbearing general. But consider this:

His Wyld Hunt was considered impossible. He was supposed to cleanse the land of Orr, and make it livable again. But at that time it was believed that there was no cure. Even if the dragons were defeated, he’d never accomplish his destiny. He was quiet and meek by nature, but he had one overriding quality: he was stubborn and headstrong. Despite an impossible hunt, he kept up his research on Orr. Despite his dislike of fighting undead, he assists when needed. And he has a heckuva strong sense of honor. He’ll go out of his comfort zone just to do what is morally right.

His nature of soliditary makes him unable to connect to the main player. He joins you out of a mix of guilt and sorrow after you lost your mentor, and does his best to assist you. This is all before receiving the sword, and before the Pale Tree tells Trahearne that he must accompany the player to help stop the Dragon’s Corruption (to which he again insists he’s just a simple scholar).

And now he receives the sword that enhances his qualities. Just like before, he moves out of his comfort zone to do what’s needed, and take the position of general. Giving out orders comes from the undenied fact that he knew what was the strongest blow against the undead. But he still needed to ask a seasoned adventurer on the proper course of action, when it came to delivering that blow. He’s not after the glory at all, he’s only trying to do what is asked of him – be a hero.

Yes, he was asked to be a hero. He was asked by the Pale Tree. He was asked by every Sylvari that look up to a Firstborn. He was asked by his Wyld Hunt. He was asked by destiny. And when you have a prophesy dangling over your head, that adds a lotta pressure.

There is a prophetess in Rata Sum who said that the return of Caladbolg would be the Dragon’s downfall.

He never intended to steal glory. He just needed all the good rep he could scrape together to appear like a competent general. He had to show he was capable. If he did not, the Pact would have fallen apart, and the Elder Dragons would never have been defeated.

Caladbolg helped him find the inner strength to overstep his boundaries, increase his sense of honor, and increase his tenacity to continue an impossible Wyld Hunt. But it also increased his solitary nature. It increased his ‘Firstborn-mentor’ quality (which to a non-sylvari, would be overbearing).

It’s just a shame he’ll never be able to open up and tell you all this, because you’ll just see him as a needy plant that can’t take the pressure to lead the Pact. He’s probably eager for an understanding friend, when he’s so far away from his kin in an unforsaken land.

- I could also claim a real WvW player is the one that plays for objectives and ppt to benefit his server and achieve the win, not just for his own selfish needs.
- Those that play just for fights are selfish don’t care about their server and actually hurt their server, it’s a win the fight lose the war scenario for them.
they don’t care about server win or lose, all they care about is their tunnel vision fights, never looking at the bigger picture.

Sorry but that statement is totally false and inaccurate in every way. My server plays for fights, never for points and never has. We don’t watch the PPT to maximise crap we just all go out and smash the enemy to pieces enjoying ourselves, capping structures happens either coz we have no enemy and are bored for 5mins or because our enemy is hiding inside and has to be coaxed out(even when they outnumber us 2v1).
Our community is one of the nicest, friendliest ones going. Everyone of us care about the server. The bigger picture for us is are we having fun and is everyone working well together as a community. We couldn’t care less if we lose a fight or match as long as we’ve had some fun.

Oh and we’re number 3 ranked server not that it matters much to us. So that thought that floated through your head about a low ranked server doesn’t mean a thing. Your problem is you think everything is this big competiton that has to be won at all costs or you’re a loser, that is so far from the truth but until you realise that you’ll always be angry and mixed up.

[Merged]1year post launch. How Anet feel on Trinity?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Vayne.8563

I think it’s easy to miss the one vital point.

The trinity started out a very long time ago, so people have had the time to create stuff with the trinity. And it wasn’t just a handful of devs.

So when the trinity started, encounters were very very simple. Everything was essentially tank and spank. And as the trinity became more entrenched, more and more variety was added.

The trinity has had years to evolve. Literally years. And since everyone was doing it, it evolved faster.

I think it’s premature to expect a non-trinity system to be fully fleshed out in a year or two. So far, this game has given me more enjoyable fights than any trinity game I"ve played. I’ll never miss waiting for a tank or healer, and more importantly, I’ll never have to jump on my healer because my guildies are pestering me to play a character I’d rather not play.

But the trinity goes far beyond limiting players. The trinity also limits developer creativity. It hampers the progress of boss encounters.

It’s like the first games that come out for new consoles aren’t usually as good or polished as the ones that come out later. It takes time to learn to use a new resource. The trinity is one of the major limiting factors in most older MMOs. It should stay there.

What the heck did you do with the jumping puzzles this year? I did not mind the waiting time last year. Was kinda fun to snowball fight with undie wearing characters or snoring for two minutes in the waiting area when you missed the first jump. But this year it’s like a nightmarish snow globe of lag and glitches. All the stuff I noticed in one hour doing it:

  • Respawning twice, because once isn’t enough.
  • Lag spikes that instantly kill you, when you synced again (because you just run of the flake/present/path).
  • Chaotically appearing snowflakes in front of you that force you to wait and watch your health ticking down, while the one you need to jump on wont appear.
  • Rapidly exploding gifts.
  • Non exploding gifts for at least 10 secs while waiting at Trixx (and then: chain boom).
  • Two rolling snowballs right behind each other.
  • Rolling snowballs standing still all of a sudden (no lag at all, the goal area was loaded at the moment I jumped into the present).
  • Actor glitching out. I did the jumping puzzle while my character was laying on the belly. twice.
  • Wobbling around at the goal area as if the character is constantly walking on icy Lego bricks with invisible obstacles between them
  • Seriously. I noticed the clock which is ticking down from 30 minutes to zero. One might ask when? I tell you: with Trixx’ extra gift in my hands on one of the small blue gifts right before the last jump. How did I notice? I found myself at the starting area one sec later…
  • Did I mention the horrible ping?

And you removed the first time daily extra drops (or I haven’t got it because of another bug). That simply sucks.

I’m pretty sure nothing anyone says that is actually logical or reasonable is going to get noticed here by those whiners.

I stand by my comments.

TL;DR: It should be 12 times as hard to gear 12 alts as it is to gear 1. That’s the way math works. They’re already nice enough to let our insignia recipes and armor recipes remain as they are. So you only need 30 laurels for 1, 5, 12, or 100 characters. (Or if you are really stubborn and have to have different stats you should only really need 2-3 different types of stats because most stat sets are useless and terrible).

This is the last time I impart my knowledge and logic onto this useless thread. If you can’t accept the ascended armor being difficult to get, play a different game.

However, perhaps don’t have them relate to the ladders and how peolpe get paired up with one another, but leave the feature in. it can sort of be a personal goal type thing, IN ADDITION to the new awesome rewards you guys will be introducing.

i don’t think the ranks themselves or the finishers were/are the issue.

if this is because of the farmers, then all will be achieved is actually rewarding them, by being able to keep the finishers, as well as punishing those who may have been slowly workign towards the next rank but decided to do it legitiamtely.
