Sup! + Pax
Thanks to everyone who was able to make it to the Pax finals!! It was a blast and getting to meet both of the teams (and a ton of other players) was really fun! It was a lot of work, but the program went pretty well overall. Sorry to both of the teams about the tech issues we were having/sound issues. Those things happen, but I’m still sorry about them.

There’s been a lot of…”fire/passion” on the forums lately so I wanted to take some time to address some things. As I’ve stated before, we’re usually really busy trying to get things (like Pax) to happen, but we love to post when we’re able. We read MOST of what’s on the forums, but we seldom have time to reply to each individual thread.

So, I thought I’d try something. I’m gonna try to address a multitude of issues that have been raised on the forums in this post, rather than responding to each of the threads individually. As you can imagine, it’s much easier to respond to everything in one post/thread, rather than trying to keep up with multiple threads.

I’ll break it up into sections so it’s easier to read, as walls of text have a habit of not being very reader friendly.

LESSGO!

For the love of the game
Some have said that we (the devs) just don’t care about the game. This, I can tell you, could not be further from the truth. We LOVE this game like crazy. You guys may be frustrated that a feature isn’t in, or that something’s not perfect, but it DRIVES US NUTS. It keeps us up at night. We wake up thinking about them and writing “to do” lists in our heads as we drive to work every day.

Unfortunately we can’t just snap our fingers and fix everything. We have to take all known issues, prioritize them, and then start dealing with them an issue at a time. That process looks something like this: we do a design of the feature, requisite resources are requested, the feature is implemented, iterated upon, tested, polished, and then released. For a game the size of an MMO, these things take time. We’re not a small game that can move/change/adapt quickly. An MMO is more like a massive ship – it takes time to change direction. Many systems/pieces/features in the game also impact one another, so we have to be very careful in what we change and how.

We’re very passionate about the game, and we want it to be the best game possible. We love the players and we love the game. Just because you don’t get what you want, right when you want it, doesn’t mean we don’t care. We’re just very busy doing a LOT of things, because a TON has to happen behind the scenes to get an MMO built and updated.

Sometimes it may seem like we aren’t listening, or we don’t respond to your posts. But a TON of things could be at work. Don’t assume that just because we don’t change things exactly when you want them changed that we’re ignoring you or don’t care about your opinions and thoughts.

We aren’t Data
We get tired. Emotional. Fatigued. Excited. You name it. Ask any dev from any game, and they’ll tell you – they’ve been through it all in order to ship a game. And just like you (who are also not robots), we take vacations. We hit caps where we’re just so tired that we need to back off, recharge, take a vacation, and then come back to the project.

We have tough skin when it comes to taking criticism, but an overabundance of negativity on the forums can still take a toll on anyone. This is simply natural. It’s the same for the president (who I’m sure hears a TON of opinions about how he’s doing his job), any athlete who plays in the public eye, any artist, any performer. You want criticism so that you can improve, but you also have to develop a tough skin so that negative feedback doesn’t keep you from being functional. Sometimes this means you take a break from negative sources of feedback.

The Pax event took a TON of time/planning/prep from many people, and due to that, a lot of us are taking slight breaks right now. If you don’t see as much activity on the forums for a bit, that’s why!

Most zones in this game seems to be missing any concept of local governments. There are too few lords, mayors, tax collectors, military officers, elders, doctors.

This game needs more small towns that have some government within them and the surrounding areas. This idea will also help Aet to create more interesting stories and DE’s.

As It is now small towns seem to have no identity to them. With little interesting things happening. To make me care about the area.

I would love to be able to buy a house for my characters, and have different professions be able to make things for it (like artificer makes lamps, tailors could make rugs etc), and be able to visit my friends’ houses. And you could show off any pretty weapons or armour you own, but don’t want to wear anymore.

Fishing could be fun if you could do something with the fish (use in cooking, like WoW, or make into a taxidermy decoration, like LOTRO). It would certainly be fun to have more things in the game that don’t revolve around hacking and slashing away at things constantly.

Similar to how there is a unique recipe for the twisted minis. When I found that out my first thought was, "Oh, Sparkles must be a mystic forge recipe obtained from combining the 3 golems you get from guild commendations + something else. It all made sense logically until I found that you couldn’t forge those.

I think most people can agree that exclusive in game items for attending real world events isn’t fair. I think a mystic forge recipe for sparkles requiring the 3 commendation golems and maybe the inquest golemcaster would be a great idea and one I think most people would really enjoy.

I am surprised there are not more responses to this. Is there another thread filled with mini-collector outrage? Personally I take collecting minis to be the only long-term goal I have in GW2.

blah blah

That explains a lot. You do indeed sound sadistic, which is troubling. What’s the point of investing this much time and effort of development in content that only a handful will enjoy AND come here and brag about it? Can only be sadism. Maybe you could try to make more popular content for the people that bought your game(1), which certainly didn’t buy it expecting this.

(1) New permanent content such as areas, skills, classes, skins, dungeons.

Another player who thinks all employees of Anet could put their extratime to suddenly jump over to another team and do a few maps, skills and dungeons just becouse they are devs or something.

Josh’s team is working on SAB, so if they wouldn’t be working on TM then there would be something else for SAB.
I myself don’t think I will be able to handle TM but I will try and I hope I am good enough but I won’t whine since I know it will be back so that I can give another try, I love SAB and if I don’t have something better to do I could atleast try… Again… And again.

Just becouse Josh thinks TM isn’t as popular as a regular Hard Mode (less lives and stronger enemies) doesn’t mean “only a handfull of people will like it”, it is also about making everyone happy, not just the majority.

Last update with champion loot we got quite alot new permanent skins, Ascended weapons is comming and probably they have new skins.

I got lot’s to say about not needing Permanent Classes and Areas but this is not the thread for that.

I’m going to lay out the game philosophy behind how we decided to do Tribulation Mode because I think it’s going to be misunderstood by a lot of folks.

First, here’s a playthrough of two games that are in the style we are doing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22oTEDa2Rxk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAH2KMiscqY

Some people aren’t aware that this genre exists, and SAB TM may be their first exposure to it. We took a creative risk by going in this direction with it rather than the standard make-enemies-hit-harder-and-give-you-less-health approach that most games use to ramp up difficulty. That would have been very easy and very safe. (And probably more popular.) But we never do anything the easy or safe way.

The thing that makes this approach tricky is that on its surface, it seems to be bad design because it is intrinsically unfair. What fans of the genre understand is that there is a depth there that comes from a really interesting dynamic in the communication between the designer and the player that doesn’t exist in other games. It’s hard to articulate, but I would say it’s something like friendly pranking. There’s great pleasure to be had in finding ways to outwit a prankster. And that can’t happen unless you have a prankster. And that’s what the designer provides. People who don’t ‘get’ this kind of game see it like the designer is trolling out of cruelty, and so they read malicious intent into the invisible insta-kills. But that’s just not the case. It’s simply a specific kind of content made for a specific kind of player who wants in on the pranks. Yes, raging is part of the process. In fact, I rage at myself when I play TM all the time!

And the thing about how it is unfair: yes, it is. However there is a deep satisfaction to be had in overcoming in an unfair fight. In these games your only real power is tenacity. And besides, it’s only unfair in the short feedback loops. (Here’s some information on feedback loops in game design: ) http://www.jorisdormans.nl/machinations/wiki/index.php?title=Feedback_Analysis_and_Recurrent_Patterns

But the longer (and more substantive) feedback loop is a process of learning how the designer thinks. Discovering that style and finding how to navigate the level better as a result. The first lesson is this: the most obvious easy way will most likely kill you. The harder, more circuitous rout will probably be the way to go. This creates a joy of discovery and overcoming that few other genres can provide. But it is an acquired taste.

Another commonality among games in the genre (which I’m not aware of having a name yet… let me know if you’ve heard of one) is that lives are extremely cheap, and you blow through them. Lives are like HP in an RPG or ammo in an FPS. You go in EXPECTING to lose a LOT. If you interpret losing a life as “failure” then you will have a miserable time. It would be like feeling like you “fail” when you take damage in a turn based role playing game. Instead, if you see every death as another learning experience, you’ll have a much better time. Kind of like the way your armor rating increases when you take damage in Skyrim. So part of preparing for a TM run, you’ll be ‘leveling up’ your ‘life meter’ by collecting as many lives and Continue Coins as you can.

I’m on the Tarnished Coast, part of the reason why the server is so lively its because of its dedicated RP community. I think its fair to give RPers something for the life they bring into the game.

Hi.

Since this game was released, the suggestion forum has seen thousands of submissions, many of which might be irrelevant or do not correspond to the arena-nets’ vision of the game, however, it is a good idea for arena-net to publish the list of user suggestions that actually made it through, and possibly the link to the original post of the suggestion, so that people who have viable ideas know that there is a chance of having your ideas implemented.

How ironic.

Don't make a new map! Solve the skill lags!

in WvW

Posted by: Uttar.2341

Uttar.2341

The server calculates things every time a skill fires off and the more people it hits the more calculations it does.

Thanks for your patience replying to everyone who keeps poking you about this, I’d probably have become a hermit by now if I were you

However what you’re saying seems to be missing one significant factor in my experience, and one which your team can optimise without changing the engine. Here’s a simple thing I’ve noticed: when there’s a massive fight in garrison or SM, it always lags horribly. When there’s a massive fight in Bay or Hills with comparable numbers, it doesn’t lag much if at all.

What’s the difference between Bay/Hills and Garrison/SM? The latter have multiple floors. At any horizontal position, there is only one floor in Bay/Hills (except for the bridge in Hills) whereas there are 3-4 floors inside Garrison/SM. As a former game modder (with full engine access) who roughly understands the current state of the art in physics engines, I think it’s really quite expected that the collision calculations take longer in that kind of environment…

So my question is this: do you know how much of skill lag comes from collision detection versus damage calculation? And if it’s mostly the former when it’s lagging really badly as I suspect, what about limiting the number of floors in future maps or even changing the current maps accordingly. Don’t get me wrong, the extra floors can be a lot of fun in Garrison/SM, but I’d much rather not have skill lag!

Again thanks for your many replies recently, and I hope your apparent lack of interest in the GvG scene is hinting at a longer-term GvG project by another team rather than a genuine dislike for it.

I love Guild Wars 2 , I love every living story , I feel like I am par of it and story is happening in front of my eyes. I loved Scarlet and the event and couldn’t wait for next week. I was so exited what will happen again , what threat we will see, what will she do again.

But today I see the new update and it felt like a slap to face Sopranos ending. I understand it hasn’t ended yet and it will probably continue. And I will enjoy SAB of course but… I just can’t help but feel , let down, it is another semi Festival event, nothing major happening as far as we know. I really hope something else will happen.

Thank you Anet for the great work and amazingly paced content with this B2P game. I love the game but would like to see more seriousness to the world and the lore.

Yours truly

Oh, wow. That’s a wonderful story! Scarlet is such an intriguing being. She reflects a desire in all of us… the desire to create, the desire to know, the desire to master. She is so utterly “human” in her visions and impressions, it makes her very relatable and yet starkly different at the same time. The whole story has, at least to me, a deep sort of spirituality which I find admirable. And in the end, I feel bad for Scarlet. She is so smart, but she’s let her pride drive her to think she’s above everything. Her view of the Pale Tree and destiny, while factually accurate, is deeply flawed. I think when she truly sees the light and the darkness she has readily scorned, she’ll come to realize her own folly.
I applaud you, Arenanet. Scarlet is a wonderful character! I love how you’ve twined her actions throughout the entirety of our stories, and I love how you’ve portrayed her as a person with flaws as deep as her intellect.

People seems to miss the point of farming champions in invasions. Farming will get you more loot bags in the end. You also don’t need to win to get credit for the achievement. I know this for a fact since we failed FGS due to it being terribly buggy and I still got credit winning only matters if you need the scarlet achievement.

If you nerf the farmability of the invasions, people will have less incentive to join a map they’ve already completed. This means less people and you could wind up having even less of a chance of succeeding in stopping an invasion. Imagine trying to get the 100 kills for each representative in Crown Pavilion now. Hardly anyone is there as there are more desirable things to farm.

You have to face the facts that you need farmers otherwise you’ll fail.

Actually, I already did. You just skipped my entire rebuttal because I made sense. Now you’re avoiding my follow up question because you know for a fact that you’re misusing the term “exploiter” to label people like me who don’t play the game your way.

In other words, you avoided answering every single of my questions because you know they prove you wrong, and are using the “I already did” as a poor dodge. I can counter your arguments easily without having to hide behind excuses. Want one more example? Here:

You have yet to explain how my doing of Jumping Puzzles on Invasion maps is an exploit. I’m still waiting.

Show me the quote where I say that you doing a jumping puzzle is an exploit.

… Oh, you can’t? My, what a surprise!

The worst aspect of this update isn’t only how it creates a toxic community, but how it empowers the most toxic aspect of the community – ArenaNet is telling people that yes, they are exploiters, but they are not going to be punished for it. There’s little surprise in seeing how many of the Anchorage event exploiters are exploiting this now, as nothing bad happened to them after the first exploit, so it’s only logical that they would exploit more.

Ultimatelly, ArenaNet will realize that the champion boxes will have to go, or the exploiters will have to go. The game can’t work with both of those.

I’m not one of these champion farmes you call “exploiters” (you really should learn the meaning of that overused term btw.), and still I feel sympathy for Smooth Penguin, because he is right – and somehow you seem to fail reading his posts in a level of detail that enables you to understand that.

The only gamebreaking thing about this event are people like you, calling other people names because they play the game the way they want. Comparing actual exploits (like salvaging items giving back more reward than the input is) to simply choosing not to attend an event is -> ridiculous (also an overused term but fitting in this situation). Same goes for accusing people of deliberately stalling the event just because they are doing something else.

Smooth Penguin already tried to explain to you what the difference is, but some people seem to be simply resistent to learning and too focused on making their point instead.

I was attending lots of these events full time and aiming at finishing them, but once I was stupid enough to stay at a bugged event spot (still showing on the map, but no mobs present) to simply rezz someone who has fallen there. It took about 20 seconds until the first one wrote in the whisper chat that I’m stalling the event because I didn’t move on, and even asked in the map chat why all those “dumb people” at this spot can’t be banned. Now tell me again, which part of the community is more poisonous?

But enough of the troll feeding. You will keep on accusing people and calling them names, that’s for sure. I just hope for you, that you won’t be caught in a minute of being afk or hitting the “wrong mob” or being in the wrong spot for some seconds and therefore “stalling the event by not attending”, because such behavior “should be banned”.

Maybe you see the flaw in your statements and the whish to make such things bannable: how do you tell apart people simply playing different content, being afk for important reasons, just wanting to farm some champions or really wanting the rest of the map to fail in the events? The last point actually does only work, if a high percentage of players farms the champions so there are not enough people left to kill a single mob – the Aetherblade “boss” spawning champions… I actually never experienced that happening. When there was an event fail, it was due to lack of organization of the rest of the players not farming champions.

btw: The term you were looking for when using the word “exploit” would be grief play and even then it would not apply to all people you were previously talking about.

So I guess this is the first big livng story patch we have seen. I just got back from the massive event in fireheart rise. We had about 8 commander pins on the map, each with about 30 peopel easily on them. I have a pic of what is undoubtedly 80 people, and it runs so smooth. We acc failed the event. We had 30 secs left on it and 5 percent on the last wave. It was fun though. Thanx Anet this is a hundred times better than last shores. Its seriously impressive in terms of capability. All the different factions, the massive amounts of DE’s. This is exactly what I wanted to see happen with DE’s and the Living Story.

I’ve tried to get ppl to come and help but no one wants to anymore especially most of the time it gets bugged. I appreciate areas that are difficult to get to but this particular locations level of difficulty for the skill point just is way unbalanced imo.

None of this makes sense to me.

Fall behind what?

What exactly is it you need to do dailies for? Unless you are doing nonstop fractals with every single character you should probably have hooked yourself up with whatever ascended gear you might want by now from laurels, so what is it you’re needing to do?

If you don’t want to do new content, don’t. If you don’t want to do dailies, don’t. Unless you simply don’t want to play the game, though, it is typically a simple job to complete most dailies just by doing what you like. I haven’t felt like I was grinding dailies since they changed them to the rotating selection process. There is almost no need to actually do living world content ever unless you really can’t live without whatever prize you get from the meta achievement.

I just don’t understand what the problem is here.

I don’t get it either. I never even look at the dailies until I’m about to log off. Then, if I only have one or two more to do I will quickly finish them in 10 minutes or less. Just by playing the game how I want to play it I usually get my daily done well before I log off. And if I don’t get my daily on a particular day big deal. It’s only one laurel.

I also don’t understand feeling like you have to participate in the living story. I usually play it to see what it’s all about, get a sense of the story, and then either go back to what I would normally do, or if it holds my attention, continue to work on the living story.

If I could give you some advice it would be this: play the game to have fun. If that is your only goal, then the rewards are bonuses and not the end all-be all of the game. Anyway, just my two cents.

After the skill plateau at lv80, the character progression is strictly cosmetic. This being the case, some of the dye options for certain armor pieces are lacking in that there are not enough parts able to be dyed.

I’m suggesting all future exotic skins (and maybe retroactively current skins) to have 4 parts able to be dyed per piece of armor.

Vol you clearly missed the point. Many players are better off deleting an experience scroll because they already have 8+ level 80 characters. They aren’t going to make any more characters, so an item which only works on characters below level 20 is just taking up space.

Then put it in the bank in case you DO want to make a new character? It doesn’t cost Anet money but it actually encourages a select # of players to purchase another slot.

If you don’t use it, then tough luck. At least you got a minipet and an exp boost for when you want skillpoints.

Gifts are appreciated, but not expected. The moment you expect and demand things you become materialistic and miss the whole point of ‘birthday’ celebrations.
