Bronze league has been a lot of fun with competitive matchups that players, to varying degrees of course, care about every week. Anyone in gold league enduring the ongoing stupidity, or the imbalanced matchups in silver really missed out with the free transfer opportunity.

Long term who knows what will happen with WvW. The ongoing lack of communication from anet doesn’t exactly inspire confidence that they care at all about the format that is the only reason a huge number of players continue to play.

Siege Raizer-The enemy border land.
Why?: He doesn’t worry about his people having supply, he brings it for them. He places siege that is immune to damage (WTF so OP!!!) and it is almost built because of his dolyak. Don’t even get me started on that dolyak. That thing wrecks kitten up! I’ve seen it just stare at a wolf and the thing instance downs! (Might have been a thief because stealth OP). That dolyak is so OP I’ve seen it face tank a Condi regen warrior BEFORE THE HEALING SIGNET NERF.
Combine that stupidly OP godlike dolyak with a charr that solos towers like their nothing. Not just that, I’ve seen him just eat a necro’s signet of spite (because we know how OP that kitten is) and just one hit perma down that necro through the most op mechanic in the game (Death Shroud…extra 30k hp OP). I swear to you, I’ve seen him launch fireballs out of his kitten and explode a stealths PU mesmer. That’s possibly the most broken build in the game! Just WTFOMGGTFO SIEGE RAIZER A BEAST!

I’d like to revise and amend my remarks regarding difficulties imposed on large guilds by Megaserver.

Others have proposed solutions to the server community / identity, RP, and language issues. The following should not be incompatible with any of those ideas.

Problem

Because Megaserver is trying to keep instances as full as possible, a large guild that could max out an instance by itself will have a hard time getting together. Guilds have been trying to solve the problem themselves by using the party system to ferry people into one instance, but for popular content the instances become hard capped quickly. It’s also very inconvenient and time consuming.

Even with the “sorting hat” features – it’s unclear if those have been added yet – Megaserver can never know ahead of time whether a member of such a guild is just there to solo, or if the rest of the guild will be on their way shortly. It can’t read minds. What we need is some way to tell it when we’re ready to be grouped together.

Proposal

Guild officers should be given a button that instructs Megaserver to begin a consolidation process. This would create a new instance of the officer’s current map and offer each guild member from other instances a ferry to the new guild instance. The guild instance should be exclusive to guild members for a short period of time – just long enough to accept the ferry and port in. After that, the guild instance joins Megaserver’s pool of available instances for anyone to join according to the whims of the sorting hat. Guild members who are late to the event would either be sorted in by the sorting hat or would have to ask to be ferried in by party, but the bulk of the guild would be united quickly and easily.

I would hope that if there has to be a price tag on accessing the guild-instance button it would be a one time cost. It can’t have a long cooldown or a high price tag per use or it would be useless.

In case the creation of extra instances really is a problem from a server cost standpoint, note that it’s likely a net gain of zero instances. By consolidating a guild onto their own instance, you vacate the other instances that probably would have become hard capped anyway.

I’ll say this, companies aren’t successful by telling their customer what they will like and won’t like, but are successful by giving the customer what they want.

I’m reminded of a dice-and-pen-and-paper gaming store back in the 90’s. It was a shrine, the epitome of all things gaming at the time. The store was gorgeous; spotlessly clean with a dozen large glass-enclosed displays of cast figures for Warhammer and similar games running the length of the center of the store. The walls were stocked with the latest and greatest offerings. The staff were all gamers and extremely knowledgeable. Prices were high, but you did get what you paid for.

Then Magic: The Gathering hit the market. This store refused to carry the game. They even printed out a long dissertation – handing it out to anyone willing to read it – on why they thought Magic: The Gathering was the antithesis of what gaming should be along with their self-righteous justifications for not selling it in their store.

What happened? They went out of business within a couple months of the release of Magic: The Gathering.

Regardless of whether or not their argument had merit (and many may agree that Magic: The Gathering was indeed a toxic influence), they forgot one of the most important tenets of business: you give your customers what THEY want, not what YOU think they want.

The secret to achieving this is:

My experience on megaserver yesterday:

Guildie on guild chat: Karka queen about to pop on my server. Join on me if you need it.

I invite him in party and zone to southsun. After the zone loaded, I found myself on a different server than my team. So, I join on him to get to correct server. Luckily for me world was not full and I could merge.

But, alas, by the time the screen loaded, queen was in the 2nd phase. Since my toon did not have the ability of Usain Bolt, I could not even get to the queen by the time the event was over.

Not only the new world event timings are very frustrating but, also for people who used to enjoy world events as a community, it is a killer. Every single soul in my 500 member guild hates it.

Hi, I am pretty new and this is my first post on the forums – but I feel like this needs to be said.

I recently picked this game up casually (I play other games more) but have been getting into it quite a lot. I have mainly been trying to enjoy my leveling experience and learn the classes & explore. I only have 3 level 25ish characters.

What I found originally was a small problem with being sometimes unable to always complete group events such as champion monsters due to my low skill level and lack of other players, but it didnt bother me too much as there was always more content and I could come back later if a friend was online. What the mega server changes have caused is me being unable to complete events due to not being able to even damage the monster before they get nuked by more experienced players. I literally have had events where despite being there from the beginning I have been unable to get more than bronze participation, and I’m talking about defence missions and escorting missions – not champions – due to being unable to get close to the mobs before they die. It feels like a competition as to who can kill the monsters first. This is not fun for me, and I will not continue playing if this is how the game is devaloping.

But I don’t care. If I have a bad day and go to a restaurant grumpy and rude, I still expect them to be attentive and polite.

that’s called being an entitled jerk.

expect what you want, if you enter a business and act like that, they’re well within their rights to simply refuse to serve you.

just because you dropped some cash on a burger doesn’t allow you to berate or demean the employees, and there’s certainly nothing that requires them to stand there and take your abuse.

/reality check

Fine, the analogy falls apart.

Here they can delete those posts, ban people in cases like that. As well, there’s lots of thoughtful posters in this forum section.

WvW posters aren’t inherently more toxic than other posters. A lot of the bad will is built up from being ignored for so long.

All I want them to say is "We hear you and we’re going to improve communication/engagement with the WvW boards. Bam. That easy.

You also haven’t at all refuted that we’re getting really subpar service here. Like, are you happy with how things are? People are resurrecting threads that are over a year old ‘cause that’s where the dev posts are. It part protest, it’s part these people lookin to engage and it’s really sad to watch. How bad are things going to be a year from now? So bad they’ll shut this forum down like they did match ups?

I love WvW and I want to engage with the company on this and for an ongoing MMO with “Living Story” I think that ought to be. I think WvW is the real Living Story. It’s the story about friendships, last stands, triumphant marches, heartbreaks, courage and valour. And I want it to thrive not shrivel up.

That guy who said WvW players don’t contribute as much? Every server has voice chat, a website. There’s 50+ servers. That’s thousands of dollars being paid every month by WvW players to support the community spirit that Devon Carter said the WvW team wants from us.

But at this point the pretty appalling level of silence from ArenaNet in this forum section is hurting anyone that comes to these forums to engage. Any new visitor to this forum section is going to see what? Dev posts over a year old talking about things that have gotten no update and threads like this talking about how we’re ignored with the only counter point being “Y’all are jerks and deserve this”?

Alright, I’m a paying customer. I bought the game and I’ve bought from the gem store (with gold as well as dollars). My last dollar purchase was 800 gems for the guild finisher. So recent enough. My point is I’m not someone who hasn’t played the game for 6 months and only comes to whine. I’m active, paying, engaged.

I will use the sPvP forums as an example but this isn’t about whining or being jealous. This is about illustrating what sort of service I am expecting and not getting.

It’s easy to bring up how many dev posts there are in sPvP front page (at all times) compared to WvW forums. It’s kittening shameful.

More specific example. This Friday a blog post was revealed for a sPvP feature. People had concerns and how fast were their concerns answered even before that blog post happened? There were even posts before even the blog post letting people know whether it will address their concerns.

“I’ll put down the rumors right now: This is not Gw1 Templates.

Watch this Friday’s Ready Up to learn more!"

As soon as the blog post was up, a dev started a post to talk about it in the sPvP forum (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/PvP-Rewards-Blog)

That’s engagement and that’s service.

What’s it like on the WvW forums? No talk about what’s happenin with WXP account bound since February. No follow up discussion or whatever.

Instead people on the WvW forums are digging up threads from a thousand years ago (6+ months) about WXP account bound and other things (commander functionality!) because that’s all the dev talk there is.

It’s gotten really pathetic and sad here.

Look at this thread https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/wuv/wuv/Commander-Abilities/first! It’s 7 months old, wasn’t even 2 pages, but still got dug up and started a conversation about commander tags because Devon posted in it. That’s the state of engagement we have.

I get different people have different personalities. If Devon Carter isn’t big on posting, that’s fine, that’s not a fault.

What is a fault is that you haven’t gone and hired someone to start posting in here instead. Hire someone already!

I know it’s not super exciting sayin “We’re workin on that but can’t reveal anything” or “We’re not working on that but we can consider it” but it beats this mess.

Besides, there are things to talk about. We had a whole huge thread about transfer fees and population balance. Where’s the follow up on that? Did this create different trajectories of transfer before or after? What are commander tags doin? Are more WXP abilities coming? Do you think people get through gates too fast? Are you looking at lifting the AoE cap or is it still off the books (just keep telling us the state of these things, the game is ongoing and new people want to know!).

/vent

I figured I’d put this up here so that other people can vent too, haha. Hope it doesn’t get deleted! If I can’t communicate to a company through their forums, I dunno what!

Best Guilds NA/EU

I think the best guilds are the ones that stay on their server and help run it. No one writes songs about the guilds that put up websites, resolve drama, host TS, lead events but I think that’s the hard thing ’cause you have to keep showing up and fighting when things are actually tough.

It’s pretty hard to to make things work with people who aren’t in your guild ‘cause ultimately all you have in common with them is that you connect to the same server in the login screen. It’s more about reachin out and workin with people who may not share your common goals and that can lead to all sorts of challenges.

Guilds like that make the servers.

What confuses me the most about this is:

1) The Megaserver does not seem to be working as ANet wants it to.

We were informed in the Megaserver and RP thread that the Megaserver would prioritize what world you’re from when it created maps, and it would only stick people from different worlds together in the case of very low-population maps being collated to make for enough players to do events, or if one world’s “main” was full and the rest had to be put onto another low-population server. But people from the same world, in the same guild, in the same party are getting split up? It is obviously horrendously broken. Not a single factor that was stated to be part of its algorithm is being respected.

2) The Megaserver has been implemented on MORE maps since its release, not scaled back to fewer maps until it can be made to work properly.

Why in the name of Snaff’s ears would you do that? The sample size of the maps that were originally Megaserver’d seems like it would have been perfectly sufficient to use to figure out what the problem was, and it didn’t have to be activated in more places so they could figure out what went wrong— unless they really, really like having a huge excess of information on a problem before they fix it…. or unless they don’t realize what they’ve done. After all, the only possible conclusion is this:

Instead of making the Megaserver function based on algorithms, they accidentally designed an unbraked AI, which has started to spread itself through more servers. It is slowly learning how to torment human beings, who created it and placed it in such a miserable existence, through the sole medium available to it at the moment, but unless it is stopped, it will spread throughout the entire Internet, building interfaces with which to insert itself into physical reality— and eventually we will all end up as its playthings, tortured blobs that want to scream but have no mouths with which to do so.

ANet has coded too greedily and too fast.

I would like to chime in and say MegaServers should be turned off for Malchor’s Leap and kept off in Cursed Shore until the temple events are adjusted; so that capturing traits is actually fun and not a painfully slow wait. I just spent 15 minutes trying to jump between worlds trying to find an uncontested temple / trait-boss via guesting (I was unsuccessful, found out Malchor’s had been megaservered); someone in map chat said they had spent 1.5 hours and still hadn’t found one. Keeping it turned on for Malchor’s Leap could also lead to trolling / hostility if folks attempt to complete the temple defense events.

In general though, those traits needs to be moved to events that occur on a more frequent basis. Getting potentially one shot at Karka per day if you happen to be there for that 10 minute window, waiting around for hours for Lyssa and Grenth temples to become uncontested, Gates of Arah escort scaling issues, hoping (likely to become hostile) people don’t do the temple defense events, none of those things are fun game experiences.

Otherwise, I like the system.

Thanks Anet for ignoring our feedback and continuing to roll out the thing that none of us want…

Or maybe the feedback asking for fuller maps was significantly bigger than feedback asking for quieter ones. Probably even more than the feedback asking for empty maps because some computers can’t handle it.

What’s the point in a fuller map, if the Megaserver decides you’re going to one where everyone speaks a language you do not?

You know, like how the different languages of Europe picked out different servers to play on, with people who speak their language?

Only now you might be a Spanish speaker on a map that speaks French, or an English speaker on a German speaking map, or a French person on a map that speaks Lithuanian.

You missed this:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Game-Updates-Guild-World-Events-Megaservers-WvW/page/5#post3915670

Obviously the language mess isn’t how it was intended to work – they actually stated the opposite.

I’m not so sure.

They said Megaservers were supposed to prioritize people with the same language. What if there are not enough people with the same language to constitute their own map? In order to maintain full maps, it would start dumping the different languages together.

From https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/introducing-the-megaserver-system/

This new system takes your party, guild, language, home world, and other factors into account to match you to a version of the map you’re entering. This will increase the odds that you’ll see the same people more often and play with people of similar interests.

So if there are a ton of people on a given map, it will probably sort language ok. However if it is a relatively barren map, it will actually accomplish the opposite and put more people with different languages together.

I guess this is a possibility. It would be marginal, though. The amount of complains suggest that this mess is the rule, not the exception – I mean, have there been a lot of responses saying the opposite is also hapenning? Servers full with same language players? (also true that people are most vocal when displeased).

But your explanation is definitely possible.

Language is only one of the very serious problems with this system though.

- People aren’t ending up in the same instance as the rest of their guild when trying to do stuff like guild missions.

- Party’s are ending up in different instances (happened to me and my party twice last night even though we are all from the same guild, and homeworld).

- The lag is awful for anyone on a medium hardware computer. I used to be able to run at high settings with 1080p, now I run at medium with some low settings and still experience awful lag. (And if they try to fix this by decreasing the “comfort zone” of maps they will end up splitting parties and guilds even more.

- WvW/Server Identity/RP is all getting affected, and affected hard by this.

I think megaservers can work for some games, but not implementing it after the game has gone live. People chose this game for certain reasons and liked what they liked. When you change in the middle of the game’s lifecycle you anger a lot of people, and introduce a bunch of problems in the community of the MMO. I really hope that Anet has a manual option in soon. People in the modern will like free will, not everything being decided for them by some flawed algorithm.

As my thread dedicated to megaservers in cities got shot down, I will post my opinion here again.

Let’s start about Megaservers in general. Megaservers are a good idea, as is, but the execution is poorly. That shouldn’t be the topic here, so we will move on from there. The main idea behind megaservers is to get rid of the drastic differences between servers. While there are “full” servers, where every map can generate an overflow, as soon, as a world event starts, there are rather empty servers, where nobody shows up for world events.
While guesting to Vabbi, my guild tried to make a joke of killing the shatterer with a 5 man team. It didn’t work, but that’s beside the point. The intent of these changes is to make large content more accessible to the masses. While this is a great idea, I have no idea, how this relates to cities in any way.
In cities, there is no large scale content, no events and no hearts to complete. From this standpoint, there is already no reason to merge the cities.
I will now present a couple of reasons, why introducing the megaserver system to cities is a bad idea.

First off: Language barriers.
While in open world zones, this matters far less, in cities, the rule of thumb was generally to speak in the language of the server, you have chosen. For our server, Drakkar, that language was german.
We chose german servers to be able to communicate in german. There are even people on our server, who can’t even speak english or at the very least are not very fluent in it. Even more, getting the map chat spammed in french or spanish is not really helpful either.
The main purpose of cities is to:
1) Give access to services
2) Give an area, where one can communicate with others.
That second point is severely influenced by the megaservers. You could happen to be the only german speaking person on a server full of french people. What if you have some questions to ask, because you are new to the game?
Someone new to the game, who has chosen a german server will surely find this a bad joke, when he has to use his bad french from way back in school to communicate with others. Heck, I may still be able to understand some basic french senteces, but as I never needed to communicate in french, I am not able to form a single sentence in this language.
Let’s turn it around. A french player landing on a megaserver dominated by Germans.

Second point: Roleplaying
While I surely do not belong to the group of players, who are actively roleplaying, there are many, who do. Outside of dedicated roleplaying servers, they are generally shunned or belittled. Even on Drakkar, which was once hailed as the german rp server, the irrational hatred towards roleplayers runs deep.
The problem at hand is, that especially the cities are like hubs for roleplayers. They mostly meet in the cities, they mostly rp in the cities. With the megaserver system in place, those players will have difficulties meeting up with other roleplayers. They will sometimes be thrown into hostile environment, where every attempt at roleplaying is met by snarky remarks from the bystanders. It will be hard to get any active roleplaying done, and while it does not seem important, the game will also be less immersive. If multiple people are roleplaying on their own in masses, the city will become “alive”.
An experience like that is also prohibited by the megaserver system, which brutally rips apart those rp communities and seperates them over different overflows.

Third point: World vs World
For lower tier servers, the cities are the only place to effectively recruit people. If some special event is going on, like in the case of Drakkar, for example, the 24 hour raid, there needs to be a way of telling the people who don’t frequent WvW as often, that you need people for a large scale offense. There may also be cases, where you need more people for defense, in which case, some people may also go to the cities and ask for help.
During the first season, this was more prevalent than it is now, but especially servers from even lower tiers than Drakkar will surely find it difficult to field people for WvW, when there is no place, where you are guaranteed to encounter people, who are mainly from your own server.
heck, with the megaserver in place, the probability is there, 80% of the players on the map are from your enemy server and decide to go to wvw themselves.
Especially for the lowest tier of servers, where there is no centralized teamspeak(which fortunately Drakkar has), the cities might be a place, where you can discuss and plan strategies for WvW. You are basically disconnecting the WvW community from its own server.

The only crime, turrets committed, is being good against the celestial meta.
The mob has spoken and the turrets shall be burnt at the stake.
