why is there a cooldown on weapon swap?

maybe its there for spvp. So you can see an enemy swapping to a specific weapon, and play around it knowing he’ll be stuck with that skillset for 8 seconds…

other than that, no idea

Medium gear looks... unappealing?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Aegis.9724

My problem with medium armor is that you can choose either coats or assassin-like gear.
Take t3 human for example, fits perfectly on a thief, but it’s completely out of place on a ranger or engi.

I wish they’d bring back class-specific gear on top of the general sets…the art is already there in gw1, so it’s mostly modeling and busywork. I’d kill for kurzick armor on my ranger..

Aegis.9724

Spirits are broken. Sure, you COULD make them work in some fights, assuming you convince your teammates to stay in range but not too close, and to not pull the boss towards it, not even considering that many encounters have radial AoEs.
And even then, as many said, only the passive is useful ( talking pve ).

To tolerate all this hassle and vulnerability, the effects are not good enough.
A CHANCE to set on fire for a couple seconds, gain swiftness or 2s protection is not enough to eat up a slot unless you’re against very specific encounters and can bug the spirit somewhere safe AND in reach.

Whirling is ok, people complain about it because its the worse reflect of any class, and the damage strapped on doesnt really impress that much. Still, it’s salvagiable and has uses, personally i use it for karka farming and works ok

Also, don’t want to be rude but:

Also, no mention of my reaction time using whirling defense in the first clip? And no props for a tutorial on how to escape a thief? Noooo. Let’s just make fun of spirits. You guys are lame sometimes IMHO. Don’t expect any more videos from me.

I just don’t understand WHO would buy this. I know i’m not the targeted audience, but who is?
Why would you even need the urge to craft while busy doing something else? Maybe you need food? or equipment? You need to craft yourself a sword to kill that karka because…you forgot yours in the other pants?

Even so, trading post pick u kitten 0 gems, you’ll probably save money getting that , selling the 50 surplus gems, and buying what you need.

And i still have to meet anyone who bought tp pickup/ personal bank/merchant.

I’m not complaining, i just don’t see how anet could make ANY money out of these (or shirts, boosts and half of what is on the store).

Make it last longer (1 hours, enough to craft everything you need, with the ability to dimiss it), follow you around, give the npc ( is it an npc?) some funny lines and halve the price. Then MAYBE it will have some appeal in niche scenarios.

GuildWars 1 to GuildWars 2

You can join guilds that can help but so far it hasn’t been much different from the same people soloing and farming away. Most people just sit quietly online going about their business. These things aren’t really the fault of the game it’s just how mmo culture has changed. No one’s really interested in questing, leveling, socializing in a group. It’s about getting to the end as fast as possible and getting armored up as fast as possible.

I think that IS a direct, unseen consequence of the game design. Gw2 tries very hard to make the game casual, playable in the same way by any class, removing trinity and givining most classes different ways to spec.

What is unfortunate is that in doing so they streamlined the experience. In other games you NEED heals, or a tank etc. Those games are designed with classes that integrate each other, and content that needs specific teamwork and composition. Taking that away gave alot more freedom, yes, but at the cost of “feeling like a team”.

Sure, you can buff, control, heal (kinda) but everyone can do that, and the effect are so minor (because ultimately everything is based on dps) that ultimately people just do their own thing and care about nothing else, or even feel offended if you ask builds to coordinate skills.

Too much freedom always tends to expose the selfish nature of humans, story has told us that. If you are not FORCED to rely on someone, you don’t have to communicate with him, coordinate with him and ultimately partecipate/contribute in the community.

Sure guilds help, but that’s true in any game, and no excuse for a flaw that HAS to be remedied in an expansion, because as much as everyone loves having as much freedom as possible, people get bored quickly playing that way.

Rangers are not allowed in speed runs...

in Ranger

Aegis.9724

LOL at the people saying “yeah, those are jerks, they probably are all kittens and eat babies”.
Speedrunners are playing for a specific objective, as the name says, completing the content in the fastest and most painless way, usually to farm gold. Not for fun, not because they like or hate you, they are FARMING.
And simply put, rangers are the worst class when dungeon farming, for reasons many people already said.

Does that make dem speedrunners jerks or noobs? No. They’re playing their way, for an objective, and they will invite only those that are most useful in that situation. If you want to blame your frustation on someone, blame anet pve balance where only dps matters.

I too sometimes speedrun cof1 on my war, and only look for those specific groups, to maximize gold/hour . Other times, i log on my ranger and play the same path on mixed groups for a relaxed run, just for fun. It’s just 2 different mindsets.

Far too many people knee-jerk when they discover their beloved ranger is not welcome in some groups, and start blaming people of “elitism” “being jerks” before even stopping and thinking for a second.

Aegis.9724

A newbie in a newbie group, running an exp dungeon for the first time in gw2 is a frustrating, tedious experience. Dugeons are heabily based on knowledge, not skill. Knowing each encounter, the animation, oneshot gimmicks, when you’ll need some specific skills (reflects, cond removal, stun breakers etc) and so on.

Once you possess that knowledge, and run with people who do as well, dungeons become mind bogglingly easy. It’s like playing cat mario (go play THAT if you never did )

While youtube is bad for spoilers and sucking out some fun, i’d still recommend it to newcomers due to that^. Having less fun and excitement >> no fun at all

Aegis.9724

So you want things to be easier and to have non level 80 zoned no longer used for any thing? World bosses would drop in less then 2 sec and Anet just fixed it so they would not. Your asking for the game to be out right broken.

I love a challenge, but there are a few problems with this scaling

1. The models are the size of a person. Have you seen a zerg of 30 people trying to attack another 30 npcs? There are so many effects it is like im on LSD with all those colors. If the mobs use a skill that one shot you, it needs to have logner than a 5 second cooldown or a large animation so i know when the heck to dodge
2. Increase the rewards. If a event takes longer than 30mins, it really needs to give you something better than one rare. The time it took us to finally give up I could have done 3 other events.

They do changes base off number of ppl there and you are fighting harder mobs so they do drop better.

In some DE yeah, like cof bridge event, where you literally get swarmed by charrs at peak times. On other DE however, the number of mobs stays nearly the same, they just get buffed in level or upgraded to champs, who are not really worth killing for that single blue or green

Aegis.9724

The problem with open world enemies 1 shotting is that, while in a dungeon, fighting, lets say lupicus or kholer i can see them do the animation, channel the skill or whatever, in a big zerg fest like orr, with 40 people, fireworkd of particle effects and 15 fps, i can’t even SEE THE ENEMIES sometimes, let alone pay attention to their animations or red circles.

And even if i could and did, chances are 80% of the people won’t , because they’re just there farming, bored, checking stuff on the tp or maybe chatting in guild or just not really pay attention, because that’s the nature of mmos. Problem is, the monster will be 5 times bigger for that remaining 20% trying to rez people or kill stuff.
And big monsters don’t pay in gw2, so most people will just stop doing the events and move elsewhere or roll a war and get involved in some cof farming, like everyone else…

There is a BIG difference beetween challenge and tedium.

Xfire stats (for what they’re worth) as of April 29, 2013.

Total (xfire enabled) players:

 League of Legends 98,955
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 55,148
 Call of Duty 2 30,310
 World of Warcraft 21,965
 World Of Tanks 9,730
 Guild Wars 2 9,545
 Minecraft 8,733
 Dota 2 8,570
 Battlefield 3 7,745
Star Wars: The Old Republic 6,158

By any definition, that’s a hit. Right between World of Tanks and Minecraft.

No one cares about xfire anymore, except those who need it as FL to play old games ( cod4). Dota2 has 250k-300k concurrent players every day – so about 3% of the dota playerbase uses xfire, and that % changes on a game per game basis.

2-Rangers ( i would punch myself if i could go back in time when i made one and wasted 500 hours on her)
3- There is still not pvp. Spvp is not pvp. GvG, HA, Arenas are pvp ( personal preference thou ).
4- Bugs. So many bugs. Rangers shortbow still fires only 33% faster under quickness for example (worked fine until you “fixed an animation glitch”)
5-Optimization. I have recommended specs, and i run the game at 50 fps usually. I go down to FIVE in certain circumstances. Introduce particle/detail scaling when there are more people.

Leveling was:
awesome on my 1st char
entertaining on my 2nd
boring on my 3rd
a chore on the 4rd (to the point i’m considering investing 40ish gold to frat him up to 80)

I blame the boring story, lack of build variations (in gw1 i would have a new bar of different skills every day, just to have fun), and the whole DE system becoming boring when you know the chains well enough to “see under the hood” .

Now that AC is gone ( people only look for 80s ) i would probably never make an alt until an expansion comes out

Pet renamed bug

Posted by: Aegis.9724

Aegis.9724

ima link you to this thread:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/ranger/Pet-Amnesia-An-annoying-bug

The last comment:

it’s not a bug, this was intended. the reason behind this (and someone has mentioned it, possibly a dev, I’ll dig it up and link it later) is that each name you make for your own character utilizes a name database. now imagine for each individual pet you have you made unique names. That means new databases have to be created for each individual pet. Now I assume you have never programmed a database before, and I have only done non-professional maintenance on one, but they would have to make sections for each animal type, break it down to specific animals, then link individual names per animal to individual accounts, all the while making sure there is no redundancy of names and other redundant info…..it’s not really feasible, especially when it takes you all of 25 seconds to retype that name. If it takes you any longer, get typing lessons or choose a shorter name lol. now before you put the torches to me, I do think it would be prudent to make the actual pet slots name-bound, that way even if you swap, the same name is still there and saved in the same spot, only now you have a new pet (although this would still require new assignments, I think it would be much much less labor intensive). So there’s your answer. For now stop being lazy, they just don’t have the resources to do it. -Nay of the Ether.8913

Please stop quoting that post.

I don’t even know where to start to explain how wrong , on how many levels that is.
Even assuming there was the issue with the DB ( which means anet is using tech from 1998 ), the information could be easily put in a local file, or uploaded on a cloud with ease.
I could probably afford renting the needed cloud storage (on a third party provider) for petnames for ALL gw2 players EVER with my crappy minimum wage, and still pay rent…

Question for the beserker rangers out there

in Ranger

Posted by: Aegis.9724

Aegis.9724

QZ not worth it anymore IMO. 4 seconds of 100% quickness increased DPS by an effective 400%. Now it’s 5 seconds of 50%, which is 250% effectively. That’s a 37.5% decrease in overall power over time.

Not worth it. Reroll something else. Not sure what I’m actually going to be doing with my zerker ranger that’s got more than 250+ gold in it.

I’m not sure if it’s still the case, but quickness didn’t work properly on Crossfire. When they stealth nerfed it with the graphical glitch the skill didn’t gain the full benefit of quickness. Since they nerfed quickness, I believe someone has said it’s a 37% IAS instead of the stated 50%. If this is the case, quickness is actually worse than you think with a short bow.

Yes, the quickness effect on SB is around 33% now (was 70ish before), i noticed this myself and i think someone else ran some tests a few weeks ago on these forums.

But thats just SB, the weapons who were hurt more are LB (long channels, no “animation bug” ) and GS in pvp (stun and 2 unrealiable due to huge windups, double speed was nice if every third attack is an evade)

@Aegis: I’m very happy to hear that you’ve found the forums on here that useful

To my knowledge, Robert is still around. He’s just not posting as much. I don’t blame him. The past couple times he has posted, our few most vocal negative nancy players jumped on him for things others said and things that aren’t even part of Robert’s job. Then a few bandwagon-ers did the same. Meh.

If every time I posted Ranger information, someone said, “that’s great, but Jon Peters said this and Obama did something so you suck at life and are a liar, Sebrent”, I’d be less apt to post on here as well … especially if I could be enjoying myself doing something else instead.

NOTE: I wouldn’t start doing that as I am not a stranger to reporting garbage posts. Keep the boards clean, please.

Yes, and that is the result of months of imbalance, promised changes at every patch, and complete silence with the community. I do feel bad as well for houda, seems like a cool guy, but he’s the one guy carrying flasks of water in the sahara desert of these forums. I don’t blame people for jumping on him on every post, and comparing to what JP said, Anet put themselves into this situation with bad PRing and interaction, and he works for anet. Trust and distrust, as a company, are earned, not deserved.

There is no badwagon, just the 95% of the players seeing ranger faults , a few who don’t ( that EVERYONE know by name at this point ) and think ranger just needs a couple minor bugfixes and ONE guy who thinks we’re op and need heavy nerfs.
And then there is you, who flaunt your guides and community support and then ask everyone to shut up and stop discussing because devs are scared to post here, and then play moderator. Don’t wanna sound rude but that’s the situation we’re currently in…

Also no, i don’t think you can report your own posts.

Pedra: Feel free to let everyone know what being so negative has gotten you. I still see no benefits from it.

The answer is really quite simple and I don’t mind sharing. In terms of acquiring fixes for existent Ranger problems, I’ve accomplished exactly the same as those who are perpetually positive.

And that is a sad commentary.

Really? I think I’ve created several threads that have benefitted several players by getting the knowledge out there. I’m actually curious to see if they used any of the information from our one big list since Robert mentioned he’d direct the class devs to look at it.

On the other hand, all the negativity in this forum has only served to drive Robert Hrouda to be more quiet. Way to go! One of the big things that made other classes jealous of our forum and the actions of yourself and others like you has ruined it.

Yeah of course, we’ve gotten to the point where we should NOT talk about the many problems of the class ( on the RANGER forum ) because negativity is bad for karma and makes robert houda (a DUNGEON dev) run away crying.

I….just….dont…

Seriously, i’ve played many mmo, i’ve read many weird posts, i’ve seen communities destroy games while devs watch, and devs destroy games while the community watches, but the gems i get out of this forum are seriously one of a kind and worth the 60$ alone..

I really can’t understand people who say having a deep and complex skill system, with alot of metagaming and counterbuilding is a BAD thing.

I can uderstand from a deveveloper point of view, it was hard to balance, but i think anet did a pretty good job in gw1 – sure, there were always OP builds, but due to the heavy constant rebalancing, those builds changed over time and forced pvp’ers to keep the mind open, learn, spectate, think, adapt.
Anyone who played an esport knows that great depth and a healthy, everchanging meta is what keeps the game alive and exciting.

^That for the pvp side. Pve wise balance is so off that it’s kinda hard to see the benefits of a less complex and easy to tweak skill system. The pve class discrimination and tiering we have now were never a problem before…

Staying at 1500 range plinking away, using your utilities for pure self convenience is how rangers get so much bad rep, and why a good chunk of the community thinks that ranger is the “noob class” .

There is so much more we can do at closer ranges, swapping weapons, using HS, buffing, rezzing, getting those boons, and WE SHOULD DO because as rangers, we need to excel just to not be considered a wasted slot.

I almost wish that 1500 range trait was removed, maybe that would improve the class and force bads to try something different, like, something ACTUALLY USEFUL

Healing spring is great, the problem is that not many dungeons require bunching up for constant healing via blast finishers to suceed. Usually its more of a dps race, with many MUST DODGE attacks from the boss.

And even if they did, eles have water field too, and their blast finishers are not controlled by AI and limited to one every 20 seconds (in the best case scenario, assuming the field, teammates and boss are still there while that slow, stupid, oneshottable lizard slowly crawls towards the action)

It surely is useful, especially for the condition removal, but people seeing that as the single awesome reason to group a ranger need a reality check..

Problem is, dungeons are gw2 end game (well, there is farming, but anyone can do that naked), its the only challenging pve content, so saying we are “only” bad there tells something about the class.
In spvp? We’re great, but anyone can create a lv1 ranger just for that, so no one cares, there is no investiment.
WvwW? I stopped doing that on the ranger after i discovered how amazing guardian is, but i suppose we’re “ok” there, not great but we’re still useful in many situations, especially small skirmishes, but being “ok” is not enough to fully equip/level a ranger just for that.

Problem is, spvp is our pinnacle, where we shine the most (with the 2 viable builds we have), and anet seems to balance everything aroud that.

My big bugbear with the new GS is that, while the damage on 2 is nice, and CD helps, it goes from being a GREAT weapon against people who have no clue to a useless one VS those who look at the animations and dodge accordigly. 5 and 2 are VERY hard to hit against competent players, quickness helps but it helped ALOT more before the last nerf.

Shortbow versus Longbow

  • SB gets hit harder by quickness nerf because it is more directed towards continues autoattack pressure than swapping it, use the skill rotation and swap back again

SB was always bugged and never got that 100% increase to quickness. Now, after the nerf, it feels more like 30% instead of 50, but never ran timed tests to prove it.

Also, the beuty if the LB+quickness was the synergy of the channels and chain CC from pets. I could use 4, activate QZ, channel barrage with a canine/spider CCing again the target, swap, get 2 more seconds of quickness and another CC from the pet to give enough time for skill 2.

That was a great combo in wvw/spvp, giving us a good burst (comparable to other classes) now severly crippled to the point of not being viable anymore, while SB was always bad with quickness.

Obtention of Fractal Skins versus SAB Skins

there is no reason to have everything common and dull to get, as long as it gives no stat bonuses.

Prestige skins are very sought not because they LOOK cool, but because its hard to get them, and give your character an “unique” look in the crowd. I understand running fracts over and over again and not getting anything might be frustrating, but if those skins were as common as SAB ones there would be no point in running fracts AT ALL.

The one thing that could be implemented, lessen the pain and not devalue the skins is a MF recipe (and not a cheap one, 50+ecto tier) to turn one fract skin into another…

To be fair i think the game needs MORE of that, very hard to get skins that only drop in specific places/mobs, and that can’t be traded. Right now legendaries are a little more than a checklist of grind to do, and can’t cover that role.

A specific feeling, for Guild Wars 2

Yes, gw2 makes an effort to make everything available to everyone. Thats a great thing, especially if you have little time to play.
Buuut there is a downside
A psychological one. The easiest is something to obtain/see, the lesser is the perceived payback, or sense of accomplishment. For the first few time, you won’t notice it, but then it starts to slowly kick in, and corrode enjoyment the more yoi repeat the content.

A simple example: Being able to instantly warp to a dungeon from anywhere VS having to use your mount and waste 10 minutes flying over mountains and seas to get there. Those minutes are WASTED, literally, nothing fun happened, yet they will make you more excited when you enter the dungeon because you “earned it”, you “worked for it” ( even if you did nothing requiring skill to get there).

This of course doesnt apply to half of the stuff you said, but still, its something that anet should consider when making content instantly available to anyone everywhere. They should hire some social engineers

Are videogames art or just entertainment?

videogames = media
So, are media art? Can a movie, or a song, be considered art?
Its subjective, but i believe so. Thing with “TRUE” art is, it born and prospered for millennia, where technology was not available, yet it spread to everything man could do.
Write, sing, sculpt, paint, compose, anything. Why would media be different?
But it will probably take centuries for that to be accepted by common culture.

What level do you consider dungeonable?

You COULD bring lower levels, but thats handicapping yourself and the team.
Some people are fine with it, others aren’t, personally before the nerf i would run AC to levelup..
Now, only lv80 anywhere, not because its the only way, but because i don’t like the feeling of being carried.

Also, i don’t think its worth it investing in level appropriate rares, only to trash em a couple levels later. Pretty much prefer investing that money into crafting, and go directly to lv80 exos

Ranged.... Rangers are Godly (better?)

One thing you have to consider is that warriors or thieves are melee classes. This means that they will spend quite a bit of their time dodging and rolling and moving weaving their way in and out of AoE’s. This reduces the amount of actual DPS.

There is no such thing as a melee class in gw2. Everyone has ranged and melee options, ranger included, only that in our case melee damage is lower or on par with ranged damage, while other classes usually do more ar melee range, for the reasons you explained. A SB thief can spam AoE blast finishers nonstop, a LB war has blast, fire, cripple and bleed, an untraited rifle war has the same damage output of a traited LB ranger, arguably even more if running a ranged setup (but why should he?)

The Ranger is equipped with very good ranged weapons. This allows them to maintain max and still keep the damage flowing. Using a LB with extended range, the ranger is completely clear from the combat area. The damage that is done from rangers is a constant that does not stop. Both bows allow for good consistent damage at any range.

That playstyle is what makes other classes discriminate rangers, and generally have the idea of “all rangers are nubs”. Staying at max ranger with longbow is NOT what any half competent ranger should do, unless very specific situations (where everyone goes ranged ). At that range you can’t support your team, can’t use healing spring/warhorn to help your melee guys, can’t rez, and everytime you have to switch pet you lose a good chuck of dps due to him having to run for 1500 before doing damage again (or you use a ranged pet, lessen the problem but get half the pet dps you would get with melee’s)

I’ve been running dungeons constantly with the Ranger and have found this class to be amazingly versatile and by simply switching utilities for the right encounter (am I going to be a turret or do I need to kite) The speed does not decrease.

You have many different options, true, but none of those compare to the utility and flexibility of other classes, that don’t even have to sacrifice damage to achieve. I REALLY suggest you to make a guardian (or any other class, except maybe engineer), like i did, helps alot to see things in perspective.

I won’t talk about wvw because i lack experience with the ranger there, stopped using him after i realized what could my guardian or AoE stunlock war do instead. But LB 1500 range with piercing is supposedly good there (well, was before quickness nerf, not sure now)

Is it time to come back yet?

Ranger is worse since november/december, if you didnt like back then, you won’t now.
Only decent buff was on greatsword, but the nerf to quickness hurt that weapon more than others (well, excluding LB) due to the big windup on 2 and 5, making the overall performance even worse on the single weapon that devs thought was worth buffing.

Make an alt, like we all did, except a few hardcores who are proud (???) to stay loyal to their one and main class and sink with the ship.
It’s not worth waiting, anet had all the time in the world to fix things, and they didnt. Why should they start now?
