AC now is just not worth pugging. With guildies or people who know what they’re doing? Sure. But chances are, those groups are already pre-formed, and you will not see them.
One of my friends, who is VERY casual ( bought in november, hit 80 a few weeks ago ) tried AC yesterday as his first dungeon. Was very excited about it. He had to wait for an hour or so to find a group, then he told the group he was a firsttimer and got kicked . Another 30min and he finally got in, wiped at spider, wiped at kholer (no idea why they didnt skip) a couple times and everyone disbanded.
Tried again in the evening and finally made it, after just 4/5 wipes. He then saw the rewards, realized he could probably get more by killing one dragon in 10 mins, and whisped me “NEVER AGAIN”. He now refuses to run any dungeon at all, even when i invited him in a group of 4 guildies.
Asked him why, and then he told my this story, how he play games to have fun, and how wasting 4 hours total for 60 tokens, a few greens and alot of bile, is NOT fun.
Now, i’m not saying GW2 should cater to people like him, that would require making everything cof1 style, but anet should be REALLY careful in how to streamline difficulty.
There should be entry points, somewhere, even with lower rewards (story is no entry point, GL finding a group without gw2lfg, or even with it at off hours), and high-end challenging content with bigger rewards. The current system makes no sense at all, people are invited in ac exp at lv 45 BY THE GAME ITSELF, paths that take 1 hour give the same reward as others that take 7min , and the first dungeon you discover is harder than many other in lv 70-80 areas. It’s just a total mess…
I always ready “Hello, can switch to war or guard if needed” in my party chat when i invite myself into groups now, to not get instakicked before i can say a word.
Guess how many times i get “no its cool, we can use a ranger” as answer?
Nope.
Guild wars 2 isn’t even fun to watch for the most part classes aren’t dynamic enough so most people won’t even watch it the biggest thing an Esport wants viewers.
I don’t think there are ANY e-sports it’s actually fun to watch unless you are total obsessive about the game (as I once was about Quake1/2/3, for example). SC2 is incredibly dull to watch, like watching paint dry, as are most MOBAs, but they’re successul as e-sports, so I don’t think that’s relevant.
Thats not true. I watch many esports of games i dont play, like dota2. All you need is a GOOD commentator that can explain what is going on to the audience.
Post bugs on the bugs forum:
http://forum-en.guildwars2.com/forum/support/bugs
So we’re not allowed to talk about any ranger skill or trait?
..
Ba-dum-tishh
Kinda. Me and a few clannies bought it for its pvp, possibly to form a competitive team like we did in gw1.
We just got tired of tf2 and other shooters comp scene (where we did pretty good actually, we were even sponsored for a bit) and came to gw2, hoping to get as excited as we were during gw1 GvG gold age.
Buuuuut that didnt happen. PvP was shallow, our expectations and disillusion too high, and most of my friends left, logging just a couple hours every week. I stayed active because, even if pvp is uninteresting, i kinda like the pve here.

First of all, NOBODY should tell you HOW to play your profession.
Except your party.
Being flexible, knowing which traits and utilities you can swap to cover different roles is KEY to group play, and you’re a selfish being if you refuse to comply because you don’t want to.
Now there is a limit to that of course, no one should ask you to go buy specific gear (unless you’re doing speedruns) to be effective, and probably the line should be drawn of asking for a trait respec (meaning it’s a heavy request, you might or might not comply).
Remember that your freedom of enjoyment ends where someone else’s start. Sure, you can sometime lie, or refuse to bring specific weapons/utilities and get away with it, but thats basically being a duche to your team.
Being nice, flexible, talkative and available to bring or discuss what your team needs is what a GOOD teammate does.

Saying zerker warrior only, link all gear, blah blah blah means, “This is my first character, I have no idea what other classes are or what they can do but they aren’t as good as me. I am da best and you all suck. Profanity. You’re all dumb cause you’re not my class with my build. I am the king of the universe.”
Weird, i thought that meant zerker warrior, exo equipped.
Also, someone appears to be mad. Don’t like the lfg’s? don’t join them.
I got my good share of tank warriors running 5 signets and magic find gear looking for 4w/1m cof1 speedruns. Thank you very much, but not in my party please
(edited by Aegis.9724)
I don’t even think the buy order was completed, as there is no track of it the transaction history.
And btw leaving stuff on the pick up for days is completely normal, many people do it when they’re out of space..
Because i’m pretty sure my 110 gold buy order for a permanent contract (filed a couple days ago) just disappeared, leaving not the contract nor the gold in the pick up tab.
Also, to the point, how long does buy orders stay before expiring?
OMGSOHAPPYIGOTONE tier:
-Guardian ( So happy i made one, guardians truly are the bread&butter of non-speedrun hard content )
-Mesmer (good damage, utility, and the most OP 2 skills in the whole game)
-Warrior (if running the correct setup, hate zerkers in mixed grioups or tanks in my speedruns. Not really much of skill needed to be worth the tier, but they must know how to setup for the run)
GOODBUTNOTBEST tier:
-Eles
-Necros when specced condition dmg with contagion ( or whatever is called the one thing spreading conditions )
SRYWAITINGFORGUILDIE tier:
-Ranger (and yes, i do have one myself with 500+hours. Damage is just “ok” but they lack any useful support or defense/utility to justify the damage and the incovenience of the pet. Also, most pug rangers just afk LB 1, which makes a poorly balanced class perform even worse)
-Engi (mostly because i have no clue what they do, most of them drop turrets or other useless stuff and run around spamming nades & flamethrower, maybe a well played one is better)
-GREATIFFRIEND,NEVERPUG:
-Thief ( they have great damage and stealth is very useful for ninjarez, good utility with permablind, cluster bomb spam etc….the problem is, pug ones seem to DIE too much to be effective. Ele-tier if played by someone who knows what hes doing, <ranger tier by the random pug in greens )

TBH i like the fractal skin system, and hope there will be more content using that. Tokens are boring, tradable rare skins show nothing except you wasted a good amount of hours flipping goods on TP , farming cof or dumping a few hundred bucks in gems because you can.
Fract skins are the only thing left that show prestige, and their randomness make it more exciting. If they were token-based, everyone would run around with them, giving literally no reason to do FOTM (you’ll get all the rings you need far before you start worring about those skins).
Agree on the bugs, but most of them are just annoying, not game breaking…which can’t be said for many other areas of the game, in a far worse state.
Honestly, the only thing i would like is more stuff to get with relics (NOT the skins) , a rebalance so that fractals take roughly the same average time (because traveling back to the lab 20 times to get swamp is not fun) and more fractals, its getting quite boring already..
I agree with the OP on dungeons/rewards.
You’ll be probably be bashed to death by the “RNG stole my wife!” legion, and theorically tokens COULD work just as well, but the point is, tokens are NOT FUN. They’re not exciting, there is thrill killing the boss waiting for the drops, and sense of accomplishment when you finally get it.
It’s just a slow, steady advance towards a weapon you know exactly you’ll “drop” in 3 runs. Dulls down the whole experience.
And stop with that “GO BACK TO WOW” nonsense, turn on your brains, think for a minute: We’re talking SKINS here!.
Do you really think everyone deserves to get all skins with minimal effort, and know exactly how much time that will need? The whole point of looking different is having more rare, harder to obtain skins, to work towards and wear proudly in the crowd as a badge for your efforts.
Take that psychological element out and all the reward system goes south, starts feeling shallow and boring
First real answer: no. This game is build to counter tanks. The second asnwer as Dasorine pointed out, is more difficult.
Getting agro depends on a lot of things. First of all, and please dont take offense. The ranger is considered as a kiddy profession. I know thats not fully true and there are some very good ranger around, but there a are a lot of casual players on a ranger.
Secondly, a ranger on melee weapons in a dungeon should not happen. your too easy to kill in dungeons so dodge away from agro. Dodgin realeases 50% of agro on average.
Then how agro works
1: distances. the closer you are to a foe the more likely you get the agro.
2: amount of damage dealt. the more damage you deal the more agro you collect.
3: level, higher levels get more agro.
4: armor (including toughness) plays a part. but it is in my opinion a minor part, and the reason you struggle is very likely described earlier in my post.
.
I’m not sure about that, going from zerker ranger to Knight i found a night and day difference in survivability….in negative.
Mobs seem to ignore the zerkers hitting them for 35k 100b in melee range who got aggro first, and chase my sorry kitten to LA. They’re definitly all factors, but in my experience, armor is the biggest one…
they should not die, ever.
Just look at th warrior banners, they have comparable or better buffs, with no player limit and no % of activation, cannot be destroyed, can be picked up, moved, and grant you 5 skills while doing so. Yet many wars complain about them.
Comparing them to spirits makes me really wonder what was the balance team thinking.
Thats a part of it, yes. Pets would be OP if everyone ran around in whites, and become less useful the better tuned the equip is.
Another part is that ranger suffers because he gets less bang for the buck from pure damage equip, as his natural dps is lower to compensate for the pet, which is always dead or struggling in wvw/pve.
So going defensive stats or condition damage is GREAT because you get 100% out of it. And, at the same time, your pet lives longer (less people and aoe in spvp), hits harder , and can make the most use of its abilities in 1v1.
Also, spvp is control point based, and rangers have traps, forcing the enemy to choose to either not cap, pop invuls/utilities prematurely, or engage with less health. And while he’s thinking about it, your pet is already chomping his legs.
I’d say we’re 3rd place in spvp, just under ele and mesmer, which is great compared to how bad we fare in wvw and pve.
Problem with that is that anet seems to balance stuff based on spvp alone, not really caring about the side effects on the rest of the game (which is what 95% of the people play)
Is it possible to do bounties with the same guild on 2 different servers, and bypass the 2 commendation/week limit?
Thats assuming we have the unlocks researched on both servers.
Also, does the other types of guild missions still fall under the 2/week cap? or you can earn more?
Dude stop perpetuating the myth that pet’s are half of the ranger’s DPS, they are not. The amount of unfounded (and mostly untrue) criticism of the class that’s taking place in this thread makes me regret ever posting here.
around 40% untraited if you’re using an offensive pet. Go to the mist and make your math. Thats assuming autoattacks of course
Also LOL at the people who said “ranger might have mediocre dps, but GREAT support”, made my day, spirits would like to have a word with you.
(edited by Aegis.9724)
-Any plans of changing aggro so that stacking toughness actually imrpove survivability instead of diminishing it?
-Is a rework of the ranger class in the works or all we’ll get are minor buffs/fixes (like trait rework, moving traps out of critical/precision line etc)
-The new Trinity is here to stay? Or all classes should be equally viable in pve?
-Will we see more skill splitting or , to ensure consistency, classes that work very well in pvp will be bad in pve / vice-versa?
-Will expansions be available throug the gem store, or only reteailers?
-TP flipping, monopoly and artificially increasing prices. Here to stay as necessary evil in a community driven economy or plans for a fix?
(edited by Aegis.9724)
Its a myth. On my alt is shout warrior with full soldiers gear and soldier runes and i really have to put a lot of effort to make mobs attack me cause they just go for squishies while ignoring me.
Soldiers also give vitality, which has the opposite effect as toughness on aggro. I have the same problem on my guardian, try switching to knights or something else with high toughness and no vitality and enjoy every mob on the map locking on you.
Meh, i dont blame the devs for PR talk, i blame the useless hosts for taking all kinds of BS without making any serious question / contending answers.
Seriously, stop watching those podcasts, your mental health will benefit greatly
(edited by Aegis.9724)
I dont know if i agree with the OP
Being a former gw1 player, in my eyes its the exact opposite.
Gw2 tries to appeal to a MUCH WIDER audience of players, including many elements that were loved by wow-ish mmos, while innovating enough to give a reason to such players to make the transition.
Tries to do too much, and please too many people, getting down to compromises that make make the game more accessible but more shallow in the long term.
FACTS:
-Rangers have poor to no utility (Healing spring, pet rez on 90s cd and a decent buff on warhorn)
-Half of the ranger damage is from the pet. The pet gains no stats from your equip, and many dungeon encounters in gw2 are based on you dodging at the right time, or get oneshotted. Recalling the pet does not always work because its slow, and many of those aoe are not radial. Also, even when succesfully microing, half the time your pet is not hitting anything, halving your dps.
-Ranger dps is good WITH the pet hitting, and pets only hit a single target.
-Many traits in beastmastery work against the class concept, forcing you to swap when not needed to get a secondary effect or not swap at all. Traits are a mess in general (enjoy that forced precision and crit damage bonuses on a trapper build)
-In many dungeons, pets MUST be kept on peaceful, hence halving your dps. Often, even that is not enough (arah p4 pets aggro wisps even on peaceful, fractals agony oneshots pets)
-Most of the pve content is easy enough that people dont really care about all of this, taking a few more minutes per run is no big deal. But on hard content (or speedruns, where efficency is king) yes, rangers are underdogs in pugging, along with engineers (which still have better support and can spec nades if need be)
(edited by Aegis.9724)
yes, i’m currently running in knights on my ranger because after doing some math, zerker armor is just not worth it.
My survivability has been cut in half, and i have mobs ignoring warriors (zerkers) pounding them and go for me all the time in dungeons. It’s a paradox, i gave up some dps to be able to stay closer to the fray and support my teammates more, but the effect is exactly the opposite, now i have to run&kite alot more.
So basically, if you want to increase your survivability as a midlane fighter…. run glass cannon. Makes sense.
More like no class should have it. It’s a gimmicky mechanic that will never be balanced.
There is no point in town clothes if you can’t use your abilities.
Everytime i’m in town, i find myself using teleports/lunges/buffs to move quicker. The speed buff npc usually are out of hand, and need menu interaction, making me actually LOSE time to get to them and get buffed.
RPers might find some use for them, but i’ve never seen some roleplay in cities, where people just spam LFs and othe random stuff in map chat.
I guess if town clothes came with custom movement abilities and a permanent swiftness, they’d see some use….until then, nope.
mesmers can stop creating illusions, rangers can’t stowe the pet.
Dps is unimportant in the jade maw, so you dont need illusions nor the pet.
What’s funny is, because o this, your party would probably be FASTER by 4 manning the maw. Just log off, and reenter a few minutes later. You just saved everyone some time.
We can’t have capes, even small backpieces clip with everything, or, in case of things like quivers, float.
The game has no anti-clipping code, you would probably see your buttocks (first time ever using this word, but hey, profanity filter ) coming out of the back of the cloack, to not even speak of weapons
(edited by Aegis.9724)
How about giving the ability to open the website in game then?
Assets are already in place, thats how the Gem Store works.
I’ve been trying to run gw2 via steam, and use the steam overlay for that…works but its a big resource hog…
LoS abuse is ok, its a tactic that everyone can use, reflections is not.
What reflection does, is make some encounters very hard or trivial depending on the amount of projectile reflection the group has, which is mainly available to 2 classes – guardian and mesmer. Many of the complaints about the new trinity is because of this.
Doing high level shaman fractal without reflection is a nightmare compared to having two guards will walls, so the whole “play as you want with who you want” physophy goes to hell. Just take a look at gw2lfg .
Having hard counters is ok in a classic trinity mmo. Gw2 tries to move away from that, so it’s only natural that either:
-encounters are tuned to reduce the effectiveness of such skills
or
-more classes have access to hard counters
It’s the same problem with thief and stealth in dredge fractal. Many high level players are rolling a lv10 alt thief with just shadow refuge unlocked to deal with that part, and then relog with their main. I DO NOT think this is how its intended to work.
But does that mean your guild can have multiple banks on different servers? And maybe access those when guesting in one of those servers?
I’m sorry, but what benefits do you expect? If they put important, game changing stuff in the store, things would be WORSE, and all the pay to win debate will restart.
If they put ultra cool skins, with effects on par with legendaries, then people will object that those items have been cut from the game in order for anet to make money.
You should be happy with what the store sells right now, and hope anet keeps in line with the current trend
I think the IDEA of removing trinity has potential, but needs alot more skills and unique abilities that synergize together. Like combo fields, but MORE of that (not more combo fields)
Right now….yes, it kinda makes teamwork shallow. You have more freedom in grouping and playing whatever build/class you like, but a hefty price is payed in complexity, balance and…fun.
People who are not forced to cooperate by game mechanics tend to do it less. As result the game feel more like “i do my thing you do yours” and ends up in a dps race against mobs with oneshots and big hp pools, with most of the finesse and survival based on the dodge and “push these buttons at the same time” events.
This make combat, which is more fun and dynamic then traditional MMOs, less based on cooperation and teamwork, hence less fun and engaging – because all mmos, taken as single player games, are very boring at its heart.
The concept is good , props to anet for trying to innovate, but there is alot of work to be done to make it actually just as good as classic trinity based mmos.
It is very simple pet are as part of the ranger class as thier other weopans are. Untill they add a function that stows your weapon away in the same manner that you desire for pets this should not be add.
It is part of the class. If you would like to fight with a petless class create a warrior and cut your trait point by 40%. That will give you a close aproximation of a ranger without his pet.
My weapons don’t aggro stuff on their own.
And yes, it’s part of the class, we lose half dps and half traits when we’re forced to play petless. And judging from the warrior population, half of the rangers already followed your protip.
It’s not a fix, but i think it’s more reasonable to ask for perma-stow instead of a complete dungeon rebalance. Feeling as a poor mans warrior is ok, being a threat to the whole party for a mechanic we can do nothing about is not.
It’s a complicated issue.
Having your stats reflect directly on the pet means that either you have to nerf base pet stats, or you end up with OP pets.
What should be done imho, is give a more deep pet interface, where you can actually either:
- Spend “pet points” to select which stats to boost, or even maybe which attacks to upgrade (not gonna happen, we can’t even have permanent pet names…)
-Give your pets standard gear (no rares or exos because it would become too expensive)
- Equip directly your pets with stat collars, in the same way as medallions work in spvp.
In all honesty, looking at how anet REMOVED features from pet customization in beta because it was too complicated for the average braindead casual player they’d like to appeal to, none of the options is likely to happen. IF we ever get a buff to pets it will most likely be a straightforwards, boring, linear boost with no interaction possible.
3. Turns off melee attack assist and has aggressive melee summons either pacified or removed (cannot disable their melee attack assists).
Thats new to me, why is melee assist an issue? :O
Skills SHOULD be split beetween pvp and pve (wvw is pve). Thats how it worked in gw1, and without trinity its virtually impossible to balance the game to accomplish everything at the same time.
I don’t really think peoples brain will explode if a skill had 900 damage in a format and 1100 in the other, or lasted 2 seconds longer.
they are doing it right, gw1 sucked so hard…. Gw2 is amazing tho.
Gw1 was amazing. A far better game then gw2, but after 4 expansions and years of development, they’re hardly comparable. Gw1 without the expansions VS gw2, the latter would probably win on the pve side.
PvP wise thou, no other game has ever come close to gw1, and probably never will, including its sequel. It was far too complex for its own good, but also the most rewarding once you got into it, thanks to that complexity and all the variations in builds.
I’m having the same feeling when it comes to will to play. I don’t really know what it is, i still enjoy my time ingame, but it went from having a blast to just killing time.
The best part of the game, the one that really impresses you when playing for the first time, is the open world.
It feels alive, unique, and the art style is just mesmerizing. But then, by the time you get to 80 you realize how “the cogs under the hood” work, hearts are just normal quests that trick players by hiding info, events (you probably played em all) you start ignoring unless there is a big reward at the end, and you also get used to the art style.
The magic is shattered, immersion of the first days is gone (story being kitten doesnt help) and you start seeing the game as any other mmo, just a bunch of stats, bosses to kill for loot, grinds for cool items, dungeons to speed run to get quick cash, checklist of dailies you know exactly where and how to complete with the maximum efficency.
Problem is, when the game is reduced to just that ^ , other games do it better. They have been around for more, are more balanced, with more content, and don’t have to deal with “innovation” and all the problems that come with it (trinity makes things alot easier to balance)
Stopping for a few days/weeks helps to get some magic back.
I – LOVE – MH axe. Change weapon sets all the time, but i just can’t leave home without Axe+warhorn. I really think people underestimate its damage, in situations where piercing arrows only hit 2 or less targets, axe gets the edge in dps, and you don’t even have to position yourself. It’s also great in events, as stuff dies so quickly that the homing rebounds are a blessing to tag mobs.
Skill 2 is also decent if you get a good number of mobs packed together, due to the penetration…
I can’t stand offhand axe thou. Path of scars is still “meh” after the buff, and whirling would be good if it didnt freeze you in place. Only use it when i NEED the deflection, like in some fractals, due to the lack of alternatives – and quickly unequip it after i’m done.
Because after doing SE story and all the wipes in dredge fractal i had enough of the dredges already. Happy to read p1 has none , might run it after all
i’m more interested in how you managed to find a pug post patch as lv 45.
My lv 55 war keeps getting kicked
If you only care about exploring, Ranger (much better and more fun than my war or guard)
No other classes can do champs like him, the pet is blessing in those situations, you’ll be able to solo pretty much anything.
Buuut…if you intend to also run dungeons, then maybe something else would be better, because there the pet rapidly turns from a blessing into a curse.
If you want big mobility thou, probably ele or thief. You’ll have more problems soloing stuff but zipping across maps is always nice.
(edited by Aegis.9724)
well, they DO say to watch the ledges, you can’t do that if you dont sit on one…
I would save us all by going to Anet HQ and having a good “talk” to whoever wrote theherne.
If you mean ingame either tybalt or sieran. Those are the only 2 which i remember the names.
aw i wanted to read the chat so badly
Not everything should be progression based.
They are skins, why you feel entitled to having them? It’s something that cannot be traded, purely luck based and that has no effect on the game.
Taking out all of the “wow!” moments from a game, turning it into a slow and grindy progress towards a goal you know exactly how much you’ll have to work for, is, to ME, BORING, and thats exactly why i dont go for legendaries.
If anything, i hope anet adds MORE of this kind of drops, in the same line as Final Rest, only not tradable.
So i can whisp someone i see running around with one “wow congrats mate, you’re very lucky, nice sword!” which i currently can’t do even with legendaries.
And no, i have no fractal skins and run fractals every day. And every single day, at that chest, i hold my breath for 5 seconds, heart pumping – and when i don’t get anything (always) i look forward for the next day run.
I hope he comes back in the expansion as a villain. Being able to kill him would be a BIG selling point for many people, including me.
If you care about dungeons/fractals/wvw don’t pick ranger. Engineer is still not one of the “must picks” but is still very viable .
If all you care about is the leveling up/exploring/DE ranger is probably better, due to the pet, by letting him tank you can take pretty much any encounter, including champ,s by yourself (not that its worth it, but hey..).
That pet however, becomes a problem and a hinderance to the team in much of the content, while being always dead (thus halving your dps, which is average WITH the pet). Support is non existent , excluding a good water field and warhorn buff, control is ok but mostly single target (excluding traps). Also, rangers are plagued by bugs more than anyone else.
Trait lines are a mess, you have attributes and abilities that have nothing in common on the same line, forcing to waste points and reduce the number of efficient builds to just a couple.
seriously, the amount of people not wanting the feature makes me wonder how common MF leeching has become…
Just give the OPTION to disable full inspect in the hero panel, while leaving the skins on. Ta-da! work done.
If you’re worried about someone asking you to enable inspect before grouping, chances are those people already ask to link exotics, so nothing changes (unless you’re one of those smart pants linking exotic item codes and running around in green MF)
I run full Exotic and Ascended, with all relevant runes and sigils. My gear is almost certainly better than yours. I still don’t want Gear Inspect. If you want it, go to WoW or FFXI.
Honestly, it just gets in the way of the fun. I saw that during 8 years playing other MMOs that use it.
i’ve been playing since Ultima online, and the thing is, in wow or similar games, gear is super important. Much more than anything else. In gw2, not so much.
So people don’t really care unless you’re running arah/30+fractals, because the time&hassle saved from the “take 4 and go” is much more important then finding a party with full exos.
