Meow: depends… in spvp the spirits are good for point defence and body block… in wvw they are basically useless. No, summoning a spirit is not a shout.

If you want spvp point defence, go for spirit ranger.
If you want full tank build in wvw you are in need of a VERY good teammate because you wont kill anybody. Maybe in small scale fight… if the enemy is a beginner… or very bored….
In a zerg combat a normal tank is all right but as a ranger you have no place as a tank-bunker… So why not go for some damage?

I run 2/6/6/0/0 build with mixed Dire-Rabid with Sup. Rune of Speed. Weapons: axe+dagger / GS. Earth and Torment in the main set, Intelligence and Purity in the GS.

I have 3k armour and 22k HP. The GS block and evade can be very handy. The Purity Sigil gives me some “sword-swinging-in-panic” condi remove. The 3-5-2 or 4 can land a pretty solid combo even in Dire/Rabid gear.

Trait changes screwed uplevels

Yes, the trait changes hit the wvw-levelling badly. I wouldn’t take any of my alts to wvw under 40-42 where the major sigils become available. Because the 2-3 trait points (+100-150 stats) wont make any difference.

Running zerg with guildmates or friends are much easier. You can tell your commander/leader that you invested 3-4 ranks in – let’s say – Ram Mastery or AC Mastery so they will leave you to operate the siege.

Unfortunately the WvW-Fun begins at level 60ish…

With other words: you can level up in wvw if you have wvw-experience in points AND as a player. I would not suggest to a brand new player though… It is sad because the wvw is the best part of the game. I use it as an advertisement for new players… “C’mon, you don’t have to kill wolves from level 1-80. Come to WvW and fight real ppl from level 15-20!”

I have a (old) spreadsheet calculating Longbow AA and Maul crits. I don’t want to re-enter every values so I use my old ones, OK?

Attack: 2191
+crit damage: +49%
Armour: 3000
Buffs: Signet of the Wild, Signet of the Hunt, 5 stacks of might, Food: 100 power and 70 precision.
Average crit on Bow AA: 2760 ( 3730 with +100% crit damage modifier)
Average Maul crit: 4899 (6330 with +100% crit damage modifier)

As I said it’s old. I’m sure every power ranger has more attack and more +crit damage.

EDIT: I’m not saying Power Ranger is OP or such. What this build needs is diversity. With the upcoming patch we can make a less glassy build with 30/10/0/30/0 or whatever. Extra sigil is an added bonus a typical power ranger needs since the LB the GS and the SB are two handed weapons. But the sheer buffing of the LB and GS would make the class almost OP.
Little tweaks are welcome like faster Barrage channel or better scaling of the GS auto.

I think the power ranger is viable now but it’s a very high risk – very high reward prof.
A 30/30/x/x/x ranger can burst down anybody from 1500 range in a few seconds doing 3000-4000 autoattack crits… on characters running 3000+ armour. The oneshot-miracle triple signet Mauler ranger can land TWO five digit crit while invulnerable. (Fluffball can link you some videos or screenshots)

Buffing this higher up would make the ranger OP.

The upcoming patch going to make the Power Ranger more versatile (Poison Master, Sigil of Intelligence, etc…) so keep hoping

I think nobody can kill a thief who wants to run!
How to kill a thief who wants to fight?
Simple: As a ranger: thief goes into stealth first time, I use GS counterattack.
Second time: Spike trap.
Third time: count back from 3: dodge
Shadow Refuge: use wolf Fear
Teleport: Swoop

I run Dire-Rabid gear with 0/30/30/10/0 traits. I have 22k HP and 3000 armour unbuffed so it is very unlikely that a thief can burst me down in a few seconds. My conditions take time to kill him/her, but unless he refuses to run I can reliable kill a zerker dagger thief. Dire+perplexity thiefs give me a headache though

In the case a thief wants to run the only thing I can do is to anticipate his movement and throw a trap or two. Honestly, I have no chance catching them. I do not use LB or Sic’Em so I cannot track them. If my conditions are able to kill him I take it as a bonus but most of the thiefs are using some very good condi removal so it is unlikely.

Six: Consumables: Foods, oils, stones and crystals are the most powerful boosters you can have in a WvW fight. The best are not cheap but you can go with the second expensive one. Check out the Wiki:

They can give you utility (magic find, healing power, boon duration) defence (vitality, toughness, minus condition duration on you, etc..) and offence (power, condi damage, condi duration, precision, etc…). They are VERY important.
Sharpening Stone gives you Power
Tuning Crystal gives Condition Damage
Maintenance Oil gives Precision
Important: they ARE NOT lost on death! One hour buff can cost you around 10-30 silvers and they cant give you about 15-20 percent boost to your main stat, so…

Note, if you wear full exotic gear and you have food and other consumables your stats are better than a guy wearing full ascended but not having consumable buffs!

@sminkiottone: GS can be an effective secondary weapon in condi builds too. Not optimal, hands down, but very useful. Sword is better but I don’t like it (I have L2P issues I know :P).

How to WvW as ranger?

First: level up to 80 ASAP
Second: gear: get a full set of Dire or Invader armour set (Dire for condition, invader or soldier for power builds). Rares may do, but you can farm EotM for badges, a weekend’s play gives you the full armour set. Get rare accessories too. For mobility: you can slot a signet of the hunt or get six superior runes of speed (from TP 2-3 gold each). If you are condition based you can even hunt with yellow weapons.

Second: traits: put 30 points in Wilderness Survival for the Condition Remove. After this:
30 into Beastmaster if you wanna play a BM (obviously)
30 into Skirmishing for Trapper builds
30 into Nature’s Magic for ShoutRegen builds
30 into Marksman for Power builds
(note: this is not an optimal build but as a beginner you cannot really play without 30 in WS. You can optimize your build later).

Third: you need some “oh-sh..” button. Signet of Stone if you have 30 in Marksman.
Lightning Reflex or Signet of Renewal if not.

Fourth: weapons: always consider sloting a Greatsword. Great mobility and evades. Thiefs LOVE it. After a GS as a SECONDARY weapon time to choose your main set.
Axe+offhand for mid-range fights, good hybrid.
Sword+offhand for close combat. Lots of evades. Hard to play.
Longbow for max. range power builds.
Shortbow for long range combat. Hard to play.

Fifth: pets: pets are NOT your main damage source unless you play a BM. Use them for utility. Wolf for Fear, Drakehound for AoE immob, spider for ranged immob, Moas for buffing, etc…

My advice is condi too, but try Trapper condi instead…
Spike and Flame trap, axe+torch (more might and more burning) or dagger (ranged cripple+perma poison). even warhorn will do.

I use GS as a secondary weapon for evades and mobility. Also with the upcoming patch you will be able to set up some really good bursts with GS.
Dire + Rabid (0/30/30/10/0 or 10/30/30/0/0)
You can try sword + something too.

Try the zerker ranger if you want but… except to die a lot… I mean.. A LOT!

I used to scout a lot. I use runes of speed, GS swoop on a short cooldown and a warhorn off-hand (i play a ranger). I sacrificed my rune slots and I “have” to use two defined weapons to get VERY fast speed. It IS my choice. I do less damage than a pure DPS build but I am one of the fastest “lootbag” in a WvW map.

For a scout GTFO is better than GTWB (get the waypoint back :P)!

But it would be a good thing if ANET introduced more “speed” rune sets or food buffs.

LB is an autoattack-focused weapon. Whenever you press something else than 1 it’s likely the fight isn’t going to your favor. 2-3-4-5 buttons are for supporting AA (rough idea I know but still…). Same goes for GS (except Maul obviously…).

Axe+Wh or Torch combination is a cooldown-focused set. You want to AA as less as possible.

But you are right! Some of the ranger weapons need a defined role. LB has one: max. range autoattack damage on single target.

I’m not saying that the ranger’s power builds are viable again or such things.

Our power weapons have slow, hard hitting autoattacks and abilities. So we get more benefit from 3 autocrits.
Two AA and a Maul on GS… 2 sec
AA + Maul + Counterstrike: 2-3 sec (or even more if the enemy is not hitting every sec)
Three AA on LB : 2.5 sec
These are real burst options.

On other hands:

Since a power build can now get autocrits from sigils it is no longer mandatory to invest 10+ points in Skirmishing. Sure the stats are nice there but if the survivability is an issue we can still make a 30/0/x/x/x trait, or a 30/10/0/30/0 LB + GS hybrid for max. Signet of Intelligence uptime. In combat it gives us 3 guaranteed AA long range shot crits + swoop + hilt bash + maul. It must be a hard hitting combo even without MoC.

Note: I’m not an expert of power builds so you can forget my idea if you want. But please take into account the sigil changes too.

I think ANET made the LB ranger more powerful especially the dual-LB setup.
Why?
Because of Sigil of Intelligence and Sigil of Air.

SoI: after swapping weapons the next three hits are guaranteed crits.
SoA: 50% chance to cause Lightning Strike on a crit, 3 sec cooldown, no chance to crit.

In a 30/30/x build:

1 hit: opening strike, CRIT
swap weapon:
2-3-4 hits: CRIT-CRIT-CRIT
Rapid Fire: depends on your crit chance, but you likely have Fury up!
Knock back, MoC proc
Swap weapon (this is a LB too with SoI and SoA)
CRIT-CRIT-CRIT
between a weapon swap period you should have 2-3 SoA procs too.

Krytan hound and wolf are standards.
Brown Bear if I run with Protect Me! or I need some extra condi remove.
Marsh Drake for guilded missiles and blast finisher for eg. at gates.
Jungle Stalker in 3-5 small groups.
Jungle Spider if I need a ranged option. In melee it never lands anything.

In zergs I keep my pet on passive and switch for “attack” when the numbers are more manageable.

Yamsandjams is right. The best balance option is that the player gains the stacking sigil’s benefit ONLY while s/he has it equipped in the hands. Hybrid builds could get benefit from to different kind of stacking sigils. E.g: condi weapon set with Corruption and power set with Bloodlust.

Using underwater weapons for stacking is a weird solution anyway.

Our problem (rangers) are that you must heavily invest in a given traitline to get ANY useful benefit. ALL of our useful “things” are at 30 points deep in some traitlines. Are you wondering why is the Nature’s voice 30 deep? Me too…

And please believe me: all of our traits are working like this. If you don’t spend 30-40 points to make them useful… Keep them away from your utility bar…

Bunker spirit build is only good in spvp. In wvw the classic power build is common (30/30/x, or 30/x/30/x). You can do some tricks with traps and hybrid weapons (x/30/30/x with axe-sword-torch-warhorn or any combination. Oh or GS as a backup weapon).

Strictly zerg? Traited traps and LB with piercing shot and axe+x for maximum AoE. But you won’t like this…

Ranger sucks in wvw zergs, get used to it!

The other side of the coin is… you can make yourself useful. No, not while the 30-30 hammerwarriorguardian are fighting. It’s not your game. If the Hammertrain gets you you are as good as dead (like every other profession…)

But rangers are good scouts, very good 1v1-ers and excellent roamers and tacklers (yeah, former EVE player here). If you want to farm lootbags this prof is not that efficient as – say – an ele. You can be very effective… just stay away from the zergs….

…I mean at least 900 range :P

(oh, and pet sucks, the traitlines are a mess blabla. I DO know the prof needs a rework but if somebody wants to enjoy it right now… there are ways to do it… just stay away from zergs again :P)

Since my main is a ranger and no buffs/tweaks going to happen in this wvw season I’m better of stay out of this season. Or leveling another toon. My guild does wvw runs two times a week. Apart of this I will skip this competition.

They’ll probably hold it till March 28th right before ESO release, that’s usually how MMO companies do it.

Warrior. I’m always after a fight against a warrior. Just to find out if this class is OP or not

However the two profession I try to avoid are Mesmer and Thief. Simple because if they do not want to get killed they wont be.

Note: I main a ranger so I always get into a mirror fight. But I think everybody else is comfortable with the mirror duels.

P.S: Just never ever flee from a warrior. You never know how skilled s/he is since is one of the most popular class in wvw… However if you see a necro, a guardian or an ele solo… You can start to worry. It’s likely that they are at least good if not better…

I’m pretty much sure the 1hSword does more single target DPS (I don’t have the mats…).

The GS has some advantage too:

1, you don’t have to lock a target to keep damaging or if you loose your target (gets into stealth, dies, etc…) you are safe from some stupid leap what reduces your overall DPS.
2, the mobility spell is heading forward (GS leap) rather than backward (Sword leap). So you can position yourself better. Also leaping through an enemy gives you 0,5-1 second advantage until the foe can turn after you. With the sword’s leap you don’t have this automatically. Sure, you can turn before the backleap, but it takes time and/or DPS loss.
3, the GS has basically evade uptime 1/3 – 1/4 of the battle by simple autoattacking.

My opinion: the GS has a very good place right now. The sword does more damage in melee, the LB does more at range, but the GS has very good and versatile skills. It’s a very solid choice whatever build you run… As a SECONDARY weapon.

Apart of the MoC-opening strike-SotH-SotW-Maul-LOLoneshot build a GS is a bad choice as a MAIN weapon. But pretty kitten useful as a secondary… in almost every build.

Yes, situation 1 must be implemented. If you set your pet on avoid combat AND press the stow button the pet must be kept stowed even if the ranger takes damage. It takes virtually no resources to program this in-game. However it is a big deal.

I accept what you say about the thief, my bad! Stealth is not a class mechanic rather the signature ability. Initiative and Stealing IS class mechanic. They cannot really avoid using initiative.

Tobias: About your comment: every other profession has absolute control over their class mechanic or signature ability by choosing to NOT press a button. Apart of loosing some utility/damage for a few second they are not punished for too long. Nobody is forcing a necro to stay in the shroud as long as their life force depletes. Nobody forces the thief to use any ability just to use the initiative or use the steal on cooldown. Even if you are a Fresh Air ele nobody holds a gun against your head to switch attunement. You have control over your class abilities.

And this is what I (we/they) want. To have a bit more control over my class mechanic.

You said that I should let my pet die and summon the second one when the time comes… Why not just keep the pet alive? If I die it’s my fault and sure: people are dying in zergs. But if I survive… what is the reason for my pet to die? I was only maneuvering with the commander. I wasn’t even dealing damage! I didn’t need my pet damage dealing or utility abilities. Heck I was fighting for surviving and if I did manage it I was standing there alive with a penalty on my damage and utility. Why must I loose my class ability for only being there?

I do hope that you understand my point of view. It’s like if an elementalist manages to survive a zerg… put their attunement swap on a minute cooldown. Or a warrior couldn’t use adrenaline for 60 seconds… I think you can understand my point better.

Yes, indeed. The ability to stow the pet in combat (with or without any buffs) is a Quality of Life issue. It opens loads of utilities and tricks by itself. Jumping of bridges, running through trash, rolling through AoEs or avoiding them while keeping the +30% damage in our pocket means more reliable +30% damage.

Not to mention in WvW or PvP you can cause more surprise since the foe won’t know any of your pet choice. You can ress someone who is lying under AC fire, summon your moa and give protection to yorself. You can be a kamikaze, run into a zerg, summon your wolf and fear them then swap to teddy and remove the conditions. So you can hold the pet summoning back until it’s necessary or advantageous.

Note: it is NOT a permastow issue! Who on earth is so stupid to give up 30% damage?!
But having the option to KEEP this 30% damage called pet out of danger is essentially!

So +1 for you, I hope the devs will spend a few minutes to discuss this!

My first problem is that every other profession can be build and be played without the “unique class mechanic”. There are thiefs never entering stealth and necros basically never going death shroud or summoning any minions. You can play an elementalist only attuning to water or a “pirate” thief with P/P and never using stealth. You cannot do this if you play ranger. You are FORCED to have and use your class mechanic!

The second problem is that I doubt that any of the devs ever tried the ranger class (only in sPvP). The new LA fights are just driving me crazy as a ranger. Basically I have no chance to save my pet but keeping it on passive and go longbow. All the AEs hit 900 where the ranger pets are staying. So even if I stay at this range and dodge backwards to avoid the holograms AE the pet stays inside the range and get one-twoshooted. If I dodge sideways out of the “energy beam of death” the pet stays inside! I don’t even mention the melee pets here since they melt before on the loading screen. I know this event can be done only pressing 1 but it’s still very annoying.

The third problem is in WvW. Here I doubt again that any of the devs every gave a zergfight a go. Pets are so useless here that I cannot really describe the feeling of the uselessness of our pets. They just don’t make it! They cannot dodge through, they cannot avoid AE’s, they are useless on walls and under them. I cannot even use the pets after the initial zerg engagement to hunt down separated enemies or support my teammates because 101% that I’ve already lost at least one of my pets in the first few seconds of the fight.

I don’t want to be forced to play something I find frustrating. And the current FORCED pet system is frustrating, annoying, illogical and weak yet we are bound to this system.

Warriors are not OP, the players behind the warrior’s keyboard are too good. Now I see this. There are no unbalanced things about the warrior, it seems that the good players are playing warriors, the n00bz and the looz3rs playing something else.

I think ele is not an add, it’s a multiplier. She can do amazing things, different kind, all by herself! In small scale engagements she is vulnerable, for sure! But once we managed to win some breathing room for her… Man, she is unstoppable :P Loads of utility, decent damage, fair survivability (thiefs are a nightmare BTW…). She can heal, remove condies, stop the runners, separate the weak, make them use dodges so we can burst the enemy down. Pure chaos and havoc

Just don’t give up! Ele is one of the most rewarding profession to play. Warrior W+1 is not

I’ve lost my faith… They know we need buff yet they don’t want to give us a buff because the other professions are to OP and they do not want an 8th OP class (HELL if everybody is OP then nobody is…… ). Our pet is a piece of kitten yet they don’t want to rework it because it takes too much time. They know we don’t want to be a “so called sustainable DPS prof” but they force us to be. They do know we don’t have an active condition remove yet they do not care. They know that our weapon sets are bugged and/or useless but they do not care. They know that our treats are a kittening mess but they do not care. They do know that the most of the ranger community want to BREAK OUT of this bullkitten but they do not care because it’s their game not ours. We have Allie as a clown to get all the cakes while he smiles yet THEY WON’T DO A SINGLE THING TO MAKE THE RANGER BETTER… Maybe we will have +2,5% damage on the axe #1 and we will do 11,3% more damage while downed…

My vision about the ranger:

As the master of the wild we should use our knowledge about the nature. This includes the “traps, spirits and other dirty tricks”. If you attack a ranger you never know what trick they have up in the sleeve. A ranger will not be afraid to use everything to win including cowardly “dodges” or a well placed “kick” between the legs. Yet if you use “poisons” or any other uncomfortable things on them the shake them of because “you cannot live in a forest if a spider’s bite kills you can you?”

Following a ranger should be always a risk. What he has? Traps? Spirits? Is this ground safe or it’s quicksand? Is he using poison?

Goal of Proposal:
Make the ranger the ultimate annoy factor in the game by making the spirits INVULNERABLE and INVISIBLE and move the trap skills a bit around. So the foe never knows what a ranger is up to. Such way the ranger can provide some utility for wvw-zergs. In small scale fight they will be a formidable opponent.

Just imagine: You see the enemy team stack around a ranger… What is there? Healing spirit to keep them up? Or Frost spirit to burst you down if you move closer?

Proposal functionality:

Traps and spirits must be much stronger by default. They must provide at least one more “utility” to overwhelm the opponent:
Flame trap: Blind
Spike trap: Torment
Frost trap: Knock down
Viper’s Nest: Confusion

Make the spirits invulnerable and invisible. Limit them so we can only have one spirit at one time only. Such way the enemy never knows what is he against and this gives the ranger a bit more time to whittle down.

Associated risks:

The "one spirit out only "can limit some “zoo” builds. The heal from the Spirit combined with regen bunker build could be unstoppable. So the healing amount of the Nature’s Spirit must be a bit lower. It’s an elite skill anyway.

Give us the option to stow the pet in combat.

If the pet is stowed, the ranger gets one class specific ability of the pet as F2, and a slightly bonus to one attribute. Bear: 160 vitality, Drake:160 toughness, etc… The special abilities can be:

Your attacks inflict bleeding for 10 seconds (30 sec cooldown)
Your next attack causes blind (20 sec cooldown)
Your next attack puts you in stealth for 3 seconds (40 sec cooldown)
etc…

If the pet is not stowed it can uses the current abilities. The ranger looses the stowed boons and abilities.

Put the stowed and not-stowed traits in the Beastmaster trait line… Like: if you release your pet, you keep the passive boon for 5 seconds. Something like this…

Oh, and make the pet fire the F2 instantly, give them dodge or permanent AE reduction and basic 25% movement speed and increased range. Such you don’t have to change the AI code and you can make us happy.

I think this is why the Signet-CI nerf comes. It makes the facetanking “bad” warrior weaker against a “bad other”. On the “good” level the nerf has less impact where dodge and positioning is everything.
