I’ve though about this recently… and honestly, I’m curious ~ do you think they did this on purpose?
No I’m not trolling.. just looking at it subjectively.
Think about it.
1. The more people that are on the servers, the more is costs to run them.
2. GW2 is buy 2 play.
3. ANet focused on making the game a “cosmetic” grind, rather than gear grind.
All of that considered, wouldn’t it make more sense to create a GREAT “console” expereince via the B2P price tag.. then have just enough repetitive content to cater to their core fan base?
This worked wonders via Guild Wars 1.
Anywho, just my 2 cents.. but keep in mind that less players that are more “dedicated” to your game.. not only will it reign in costs to keep servers up but also bot population due to GW2 simply NOT being on the same level as WoW.
In essence GW2 is a success in it’s own right and profitable too.
*in it’s own way ~ planned out or not.

I agree with pretty much everything in the post. These are all things I’ve been thinking hard about recently. The issue I see that are most prominent is that the current state of PvE is essentially just people grinding events or dungeons for an item at the end of it, instead of playing the game because the world is interesting.
You have mentioned many things that I feel would improve the world and make it more life-like, including the changes to the epic DE’s in that it’s much less of a zerg fest, and more of an area-wide coordinated warzone. I always feel that when it comes to events on that scale, it shouldn’t just be 100 people spamming at the big dragon. What should be happening, is that a gigantic area becomes filled with many different objectives. That way it splits people up and make the event feel even more strategic and larger.
And I also agree, that although DE’s currently affect the world, they aren’t very “realistic”. A good example is the two camps at the 2 ends of the tunnel in Cursed Shore; those camps are constantly being attacked by risen, and even though that makes sure things are always happening, it has also become a place where people just sit and farm the DEs as they reset. In that way, the world is never allowed to change because the camps never fall. So there should be a ramping up of events where the odds eventually become stacked heavily against the players.
For example, if Cursed Shore has been held by the Pact for too long, there should be a dramatic change event where every camp on the map is simultaneously attacked.
Or, specifically for one camp, maybe a Dragon would come out and destroy the entire camp, killing some anonymous NPCs and scattering the rest in different directions. The players would have to choose a direction to follow and protect the NPCs, who will then formulate plans to retake the area.
I guess my point is that there needs to be an increase in how events really shape an area. The world should be constantly changing, and if the players are not allowing the change, then the game itself should fight back and force a change, that way the players are always facing a new challenge.
lol, thanks
A few posts above yours.. I replied to Azjenco and talked a bit more indepth at how mobs could not only “fight back”… but also change the world via mob “population”.
Have any thoughts on that?
As long as challenge mode doesn’t become the thing to run. One of the biggest things that killed LOTRO for me and I’m sure many others was the introduction of a challenge mode for dungeon boss fights. Dungeon runs were considered a waste of time if you failed challenge mode since all the good loot came from it.
That noted I’d like the OP’s idea of challenge mode being a “Complete all explorable areas of a dungeon and unlock the final dungeon boss” maybe call him a Dungeon Warden or something.
Well, GW2 isn’t a “gear grind” so.. you wouldn’t have ta worry bout that.
*more about the prestige of beating the dungeon and or what other “content” ANet decide ta incorporate after that.
IE: WIll there be MORE stuff that unlocks AFTER you beat the dungeon?
Fav = Asura
Least = Human

There have been some post recently by people that are upset that they’ll NEVER get a legendary weapon skin.. simply because "they have a real life".
So I offer a suggestion....
Why not just have legendary weapons that are acquirable via different means?
1. The current ones that are "time/farm" based.
2. New set that go along with advanced dungeon runs via::
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/GW2-Challenge-Mode-Edition/first#post345330
3. Dragon King weapons via events that are evolved via::
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/Combat-Dynamic-Events-what-s-the-point-if-they-re-easy-mode/page/1
4. World Explorer via 100% map completion + 100% story line.
5. Collectors Heaven via having 1 of EVERY collectable item in the game in your collection ~ mini’s included.
I mean, there are SOOOO many ways ta get "legendaries" there’s no reason not to take advantage of’em.
Not only that, it’ll create a sense of "challenge" for player to "collect" them all XD
haha.. that would be a REALLY cool idea too!
*#Have a Legendary "backpack" you get by collecting 1 of each "type" of legendary weapon that shapeshifts ALL weapons you have equipped.*
just my 2 cents ~

What’s wrong with these forums?… everytime I click on certain topics, I get forwarded to pg2.. when there isn’t a page 2 to go to. o.O
He led off with a blanket statement bemoaning the lack of challenge in the entire game. I simply gave an opinion on that statement. Perhaps he needs to work on continuity when writing.
What I find amazing is the apparent absolute refusal to adjust your circumstances in order “find” challenge. If the game won’t automatically adjust to my level of competence..then its a bad game?? How does any game mechanic do that?
Have you played Torchlight 2 yet?
If you have, what mode did you play on? and why?
Though I haven’t played it yet, many of my friends SWEAR that if you don’t put it on veteran/hardmode, then the game is simply too easy and boring.
That is pretty much what YOU have been talking about.. “challenge” in the sense of mobs not being instantly blown up, ect… (fight mobs above your level).
And while that’s one way to look at challenge.. for some of us, we want mechanics that are MORE than just “Difficulty = +HP/DMG/Mob Count”.
Faranox wrote in the first post:
I’ve done quite a lot of PvE with my friends and yet there was nothing, literally nothing, we needed a second try. Neither the dungeons, be it story or explorable mode, nor one of these DE gave us the slightest bit of a challenge.
I think that says it all. Perhaps you should read what you post. I still maintain that had you attempted your forays in zones above your current level you might find some challenge. Instead of kittening on the entire game.
I’ll continue posting however, as I think its a pertinent point that needs to brought up.
Again, you’re missing the point.
If the only way to get a “challenge” is by fighting things above your level.. then how do you fight things above your level if you’re lv80?
He’s talking about adding challenge to the ENTIRE game..
I’ve got 2 level 80 characters.
Necro, Elementalist.
My Necro hasn’t touched his “story” since around lv32ish.
My Elementalist only did 4 missions..
It’s not that it’s “bad”.. it’s that it feels unrewarding.
Personally… I kinda think this is why SWTOR fell appart and isn’t very popular. Sure story is important, but gameplay trumps it.. everytime!
Handicap equals challenge. If you refuse to take any responsibility for finding a level of challenge that you can embrace, then stay bored. You deserve no less than the kiddie levels, Wookie.
I won’t quest at level. I habitually solo 3-4 level above my own…and its plenty challenging.
Think ya missed the point of the topic… =/
Or… they could actually make Chests worth opening

@Azjenco
I’d support that.. where events that keep failing get harder.. BUT the mobs don’t just increase in HP/DMG/Population.. but also in tactics.
IE: your bolder scenario.
Hmm, then again.. I’d also support a “population event” where if you keep defending from centaurs.. eventually they dwendle in population and they Hylek or Bandit take over their territory.. thus event scale now via the new “threat”.
From there, you could prolly incorporate mob population/territory, viewable on the map or from certain NPC’s.
Using this, the players could influence dungeons too.. (not all of them, but some) where the dungeon “theme” changed, depending on which “Race” had control over it.
This would change the encounters.. as well as the drops (cosmetics) from the dungeons.
While this would be a pain to actually add to the game, I would more than support this type of revamp to the DE/Dungeon systems
Would you?
Personally, anyone that buys gold from a seller rather than from ANet are nothing more than scum.
That may sound harsh.. but if that’s the persona the forums and gerenal populas take, then people would be far less to buy from gold sellers.
Think about it.. the only reason they’re doing it is because gold from sellers is a “better deal”.
But really, it’s like a huge smack to the face of ANet and the Guild Wars 2 community.. in that you like the game enough to buy it, but would rather support gold sellers and account thieves.
#Support GW2!
@Zii The Mad
It’s called Action Combat.. lol, so the only reason it doesn’t really work in GW2 is because the events don’t scale to cater to it.
IE: GW2 is spam focused and the spells don’t have “weight”.
Again, I would recommend checking out my suggestions I posted above on the issue as they would greatly improve the combat/de’s/dungeons and over all fun factor of GW2.
I like this list. Thread title makes no sense to me though. I think the vista viewer could be a nice addition to the housing element supposedly coming to the game. Also a jukebox would be cool so you could play various tracks from the game’s massive soundtrack.
hmm, I’d definitely support that
lol.. Though, I haven’t heard anything about “housing”.Yeah, it has something to do with your personal story home instance. They mentioned somewhere during development that it would change over time with your story and reflect the choices you made. They hinted at it being GW2’s form of housing basically.

The logical extension of this scenario is to make an MMORPG that is actually an MMORTS with players instead of units. Then players wouldn’t be following a scripted event—even an event with a complex script, but rather making decisions that drive the action, building a world and investing in the world. Then the threat becomes exactly what it would be in the real world—the possibility that if we the players fail, part of the world we built will be destroyed. That is a real threat. Anything else is just a plot device.
Ironically, a game like that already exists.. lol it’s called Wakfu.
Though personally, I’m NOT a fan of the game.. it does operate a lot like what your description.
@Zuralork
lol, pretty much.. but he’s only hard in the “artificial” sense.
IE: he hard cause he “zergs” the players.
Funny since that’s what players typically do to every event in the game
Honestly, I would recommend anyone wanting to suggest changes to GW2 and even the Devs themselves to watch these vids::
Love it when games are hard cause the game is actually DESIGNED around a solid concept.
IE: Right now, GW2 = Diablo Combat Clone w/o stat gear grind
Basically the mechanics don’t work well with one another.
The idea is focused on adjusting the difficulty of the mobs/bosses that is appropriate, say for a new lvl35 player that is going for AC for the 1st time. Most players doesn’t have enough gear that helps them to complete AC without suffering a lot of frustration and getting broke on repair bills.
Right, but GW2 is “skill focused”.. lol, well.. it tries to be anyways XD.
What that means, is that unless you’re walking into a dungeon with gear that’s 10 levels under it’s starting level (IE: you’re lv35, going in with lv25 whites) ~ then you won’t really have a problem completing the dungeon.
Basically, gear and level really don’t matter in GW2.
Hope that helps.. though, if not.. I would recommend watching this and perhaps understading what you’re trying to compare.
Gear progression + Level:: WoW Vs. GW2
This doesn’t do anything because of “level scaling”.
In that I’m level 80, doing AC *(lv35 dungeon) and the game levels me down to lv35 when I go into the dungeon.
So, level is irrelevant.
However, IF they added more “maps” w/stories of their own into the dungeons that were level restricted.. then I guess that could be cool.
Since it is so easy to die in this game I made a few exceptions to the rules of permadeath. If I’m going afk and I die in the process then I don’t count it. Also I don’t count pvp in any situation as the true death since you are going to die a billion times over and over.
For it to have real meaning and excitement you have to be in a pve situation in full control.
Ya know… the more I think about it.. the more I think you’ve touched on the main reason why a lot of people are upset/disappointed with GW2.
IE: Lack of that “thrill”.
Even in normal MMOs you have some form of that “thrill” ~ usually in the form of extremely hard dungeons or mob encounters.
And even though, GW2 has some of the most annoyingly hard dungeons I’ve ever played in an MMO… they still lack that sense of accomplishment after beating them.
IE: There are no “white knuckle” boss fights where you have to use a crowbar ta break your ninjagrip from your mouse/keyboard.
The main culprit is that the spam combat mechanics and that if you die… so what? just rez at waypoint and run back.
This combo’d with no actual loot that’s worth anything from the dungeons *(not talking about gear treadmill.. but that the rewards IN GENERAL are lackluster) just compounds a more “meh” attitude about GW2 and your character/story.
I’ve made a few “suggestions” in the effort to add “challenge” to GW2.
You’re welcome to check them out and offer up your support and/or critiques of the ideas.

It’s something I’d considered.. but then again, I’m reminded how silly you can be killed in this game.
IE: Capture a town from mobs, then play around in your inventory for a few minutes ~ get up, walk to the bathroom and come back to see that the town is being assulted.. resulting in your characters death while you were away.
Personally, if we had perma death.. I would REALLY be urked.. not really because I’d have to start over.. but because that “thrill” you talked about wasn’t experienced.
IE: I missed the whole fight..
#Isn’t that the whole point of perma death?.. to EXPERIENCE it?
lol, but I digress..
Beyond having to keep your character safe.. you’ve also got the “zerg” problem with combat.
IE: Events don’t get more tactical… they just spawn more mobs with more hp/dmg.. and people would rather sit there and spam their abilities then help you as you were downed by an errant fireball.
Thus you die and people move on to the next zerg event.
Basically what I’m saying.. is that GW2 isn’t true action combat.. and your “skill” to dodge is more often then not, simply NOT a factor in your death ~ due to the way events scale.
Not only that, the “rewards” you get are pretty trivial for the “risk” you’d be taking ta get them.
In the end, GW2 isn’t EvE.
More to the point, there are NOT systems in place that reward or are built around “perma death”. ~ in that you’ll be dieing a LOT of “cheap deaths” due to these “run and gun” systems.
IE: Run in like your life doesn’t matter, because that’s the way the game was built.
Seems the forums break when a topic gets close to 50 replies… =/
**This post is a placeholder so people can see page 1, instead of being forwarded to an empty page 2.
@wheeler
Sure, why not?
lol, the % of these chests actually dropping isn’t exactly “low”.
Really wish I knew what MF actually did and IF it does affect the chests aswell.
@Krojack
By me saying “GW2 is not gear based” ~ I’m refering to the gear treadmill found in MMO’s.
For a better example of this, just watch:: http://penny-arcade.com/patv/episode/power-creep
As you can see.. GW2 isn’t “gear based”.
Thus no matter what they put into the chests… they’ll never be P2W.
1. Teleporting to waypoints in those zones is WAY cheaper.
2. You can see EVERY dynamic event going on, via your map.
3. “Hearts” reset and have a bonus to the mobs/tasks involved *(think “New game +” Mode / nightmare difficulty).
4. Can purchase “Vista Volumes” from certain NPC’s that are useable at your character select screen or in game via a “theater” like the one in FFX.1 – I agree with, as an explorer this would be a very nice incentive to actually go for 100% world completion.
2 – Not such a good idea, now if it was limited to the map you are currently on that would be nice.
3 – Bad idea and kind of hard to do, it would require either phasing technology or instancing to accomplish as hearts are open world interest points.
4 – Sure why not it’s purely cosmetic anyway.
Numbers 1 & 2 are actually tied to “zone completion” not world completion.
Number 3.. ya seems the more I think about it, the more silly it sounds.
Though, lol.. people keep comparing it to Diablo.. and honestly, that’s NOT where I got the idea of “nightmare mode” from.
Was more inline with “Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem” ~ where you had to beat the game 3 times (once using each of the 3 deities) to get the “final” ending.
No matter how ya change these chests.. even including dungeon tokens or karma.. quite simply, there’s no “pay to win” in GW2.
IE: GW2 isn’t “Gear based”.
Gear progression is also associated with “Power Creep”.
Perhaps this vid will help you better understand the issue.
http://penny-arcade.com/patv/episode/power-creep
I like the hard mode idea, though gearing would start to be (even?) more of an issue, and most of us want to avoid the way some games handle that subject. I was thinking that having enemies prioritize opponents by going after poorly geared players first would be both a reasonable tactic and encourage the poorly geared players to either get better gear or else be bad-kitten enough to take the heat. So hard-mode dungeions would be a good avenue to introduce that mechanic.
Interesting… so not only would mobs go after players being rez’d (currently) but they would also “favor” players that are specifically NOT geared for the dungeon.. thus causing them to be focused down, prolly die a lot and have a stupid repair bill.
lol…
That would be kinda neat… honestly tho, you could take it a step further and have mobs that “target” players with the highest MF. since that’s a current problem with dungeon groups
IE: You guys can kill stuff, and carry me! ~ all while getting crappy loot.
meanwhile, I’ll sit back.. and get double the gold + MUCH better loot!
balance is off but we should prolly save that for an MF topic..
@Elocke
Dungeon tokens?… hmmmmmmmmmmm
wouldn’t be opposed to it, but at the same time how would you balance those types of chests?
IE: what would the random content table consist of?
For the recipe tho, I could see throwing in a “ghost transformation potion” with the chest in the mystic forge to get an AC dungeon themed chest.
Also begs the question… if we can use the ghost potion.. what’s to stop us from being able to use the “mob” potions?
What could you get via Minotaur potion + chest + leather scraps + phylo stones?
would it be gear?… crafting mats?… or boosters?…
What would you like ta see in’em?

Hmm, not so much.. while I COULD say that GW2’s “overflow servers” are forms of instances.. as well as your story missions.
At the same time, a REAL instanced based game is like vindictus or c9.
Where you have a hub city and people go from there into map zones that only a select few people can enter *(must be part of your party).
Same goes for Diablo 3 and Path of Exile
lol, GW2 is more open world than you give it credit for.

Agent J: Why the big secret? People are smart. They can handle it.
Agent K: A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it
lol, ya.. I can agree with that.
Two things to consider tho…
1. Commanders cost 100 gold and SHOULD represen some form of leadership.. (IE: GW2 hopefully has plans ta utilize this “title”).
2. Instances are always frowned upon.. especially in todays MMO’s.
So, if all the good content was “locked away”.. people would look at GW2 like it was nothing more than an instanced based MMO, thus throwing away all the work ANet have done to build a “living world”.
Again, while I’m not against your ideas.. I just don’t like limiting the world.. for no other reason that there are “more people being in it”.
YES this game is very single playerish, there are no real challenging parts that require good group cohesion as most dungeons are easily pugable. There are zergs but those just seem like one man in what might as well be a npc army.
Which begs the question… what would YOU like to see changed ta “fix” this?
