I think you have a point but I also think that it also makes sense (at least to me). That the magic contained in the staff itself is transferred to the user (you) which gives you the power to use the corresponding abilities.

This is of course just my opinion. I hope at the least this gives you another way to look at it. At least thinking about it this way may ease your pet peeve.

“There is literally no reason to use anything other than full DPS setups for it unless you’re roleplaying. "

Yes there is. A full dps set-up can get you killed in a poor groups where the mobs live long enough to attack back. Ok, you can rage quit and call everyone noobs, since it is obviously all their fault and if they played to your elite standard with excellent dps it wouldn’t happen, but actually swapping to a hammer in the right place can hide a lot of problems with a group quite nicely. All problems except elitism, seemingly.

I am extremely glad that the game developers do not carry this sentiment. This philosophy is literally the BANE of this game. According to your philosophy there is no point in even having any other set available in this game. There would be no reason to have utility slots, stances, or support weapons in the game period.

You can carry any idea that you want… on certain content like high level fractals your point maybe valid. I play a variety of builds across numerous content and can say that their are multiple ways you can play your class. There are some builds that are generally just more effective than other builds.. but the viability to play builds are mostly determine by the player.

It’s a shame there is no cure for this disease affecting the mindset of the GW community.

So by “stupid reasons” you mean you died from getting tricked into standing on a glass door?

Or did you die because your team failed to control the hammer? That just creates more strategy to determine how many resources (players) you need to devote. This is no difference from destroying/defending trebuechet.

Were you just outplayed and knocked off the map? Did you have stability? What class were you?

All I see is just a lot of posts of people crying rather than any real concrete justifications of deleting a great map from PvP…

What your left with when you see a warrior using a greatsword is the thought “oh great he is going to run away like a wanabe thief the second things don’t go his way.”

so why you dont qq about thief fleeing ?

at least you can see the warrior all the time, you can see him moving away from you, if its a thief/mesmer you dont know if he ran away or standing behind your back.

Don’t talk about thieves or mesmers abusing stealth in the forums. The forums will break from the massive influx of QQ spam…

Seriously what’s with this fascination with carrying two bows at once?

Has there ever been an archer, historically and contemporarily, who carries two bows at once?

ikr?

if I could I would carry 8 bows, 14 quivers, and a crossbow for safety. Master of range and fumbling about. Yeah, Death from afar: my own death as I drop all my bows on the ground trying to decide which one to use.

Meanwhile the Warrior rushing you with his massive hammer, suffers critical damage on his back from the massive Greatsword he tried to hold as a secondary weapon.

Point noted, that would make a pretty funny spoof video… lol but back on topic.

Sword is not a better weapon, its barely a rangers weapon. Lore matters, in Guild Wars Lore Rangers used bows. If you prefer other weapons more power to you..

However, I do not choose to accept it and play the class for its so called “strengths”. I will play it as a RANGER and maybe in time it will be fixed. Until then, I intend to use the forums for the purpose they were created. To discuss my concerns, to the community and to the game Developers.

All the facepalm… At least do the effort to look up what a ranger IS before making such silly statements.

As for the lore, GW1 rangers were never forced to use bows. Although it was its main and, for the sake of lore, preferred weapon (preferred being the actual word used in GW1), there were several viable builds in both pve and pvp using spears, daggers, hammers etc. Anet even acknowledges this by giving the ranger boss in AC Story a hammer.

Correction, in GW1 Rangers WERE forced to use bows. Ranger/Warriors, like the Aragorn reference, could use other weapons effectively. Make sure your information is completely accurate next time. =)

“Yes, rangers are commonly seen as proficient with a bow, however that is not their one and only weapon.”

Did I ever mention that a bow was a rangers only weapon?

No, but a Ranger without a bow is not much of a ranger from any LORE perspective. It’s a rangers trademark, unless you are Chuck Norris. I’m pretty sure you aren’t Chuck…

Edit: Me personally, I would use daggers and knives before I used a sword as a Ranger.

In Guild Wars 1, rangers not only had poison arrows, but ignite arrows, and apply poison.

???

First skill is a sword ability, second skill is dagger, third skill is a 2 sec poison..

???

All 3 are poison skills. It doesn’t matter if it’s a bow skill or not (apply poison could be used with all weapons). And Poison Volley is a 10 second poison without condi duration increases when you use it correctly (at point blank range) and it has a 9 second cooldown without traits. This actually makes it more efficient at applying poison compared to Apply Poison since there is no cast time associated.

But the point is you said only “rogues” (lol) had access to poison, when it’s pretty clear that rangers have tons of access to poison in GW2.

My list didn’t include traps, pet skills, or even the master trait that makes poison more effective.

lol…

Point he was trying to make is that rangers have plenty of poison, much more than a “rogue”. We can keep 100% uptime on poison with one skill if you trait into marksmanship, like 80% uptime if you don’t. Saying rangers can’t poison is pretty false when we probably have the most in game, maybe a necro beats us. Not only that but we have a trait that makes our poisons stronger.

Except by using a “Bow”. Which is why most people picked the class to begin with. (FOTM Meta Sword Rangers dont count). Now this is the part where my opinion is my opinion, but I am a ranger who refuses to pick up a sword because that is not the class that I rolled.

I mean I was a huge fan of HE-MAN, but he was a warrior.. not a ranger..

So because you refuse to use better weapons they don’t count? Well if you want to hurt yourself by using only bows then complain about poison, what do you expect? Rangers have plenty of poison, you simply refuse to use it, so instead of wanting more poison on ranged weapons, perhaps you should branch out a bit and play the class to it’s strengths.

Ranger =/= Archer

Your disconnect with the reality of class design is striking, young one.
inb4 you copy pasta that horrendously outdated pre-launch description – yes we are the best ranged damage users. That still doesn’t mean that our ranged option is the best performing weaponset. Not even remotely so.

This goes to the above poster as well as warriorjrd.8695…

Who cares about a slight nerf to do PvE?

I love the condescension dripping from this.

I don’t know, maybe PvE players?

No, PVE players associates 5% damage reduction from one skill as a 5% damage nerf to DPS

Q: Will this affect your speed clears?
A: No

“I want to clear this dungeon as fast as possible and now I deal less damage.”
Less damage with one skill

Does this affect speed clears? Well of course it does, genius.

No a 5% nerf to 100B will not affect any speed clears from groups.

Q: Will this affect your effectiveness to run dungeons/fractals?
A: No

“I want to clear this dungeon as fast as possible and now I deal less damage.”

I deal less damage. Therefore I am less efficient.
I deal less damage with hundred blades but a harder hitting burst skill… there fixt for you.

I understand your frustration with having a nerf to your class/build but this is honestly a step in the right direction for Warriors.

“It’s a step in the right direction because I said so”.

It is a step in the right direction because of the points I mentioned. Either way I’m sure these types of comments won’t change anyone’s mind about the class

No, it isn’t. Bad in PvP, balanced in PvE, balanced in WvW. And yet they nerf the damage of two of the skills. Because clearly if they kept that 5% GS would be overpowered and format warping.

How does nerfing a useless PvP skill to fix broken BURST skill bad for PvP or WvW? This change won’t even be noticed in PvE at all

To be honest I disagree with this nerf to base damage on warrior greatsword. This nerf feel totally off. What make GS strong is a combination of traits and especially 1 trait which is forcefull greatsword.
This is the one and only trait in game that provide might on crit without ICD. Just Add a 1 second ICD to this trait, without touching to GS base damage and PvE GS warrior will be balanced.

It’s already balanced. Sticking an ICD on Forceful Greatsword basically means “delete your greatsword and never use it again”. The use of the weapon in PvE has an enormous reliance on this trait.

How is GS not balanced, by the way? It makes a big number but does DPS on par with other classes regardless of this big number, so where is the issue?
I agree for once, ICD on forceful greatsword makes absolutely no sense..

crossbow

Apparition.1576

Honestly i don’t think crossbow is as easy to use as you think. Aiming requires a lot of practice, even rifles aren’t easy to use irl. And I can tell since it was part of ny military training.

It takes years to become accurate with a bow and arrow. It’s a very long, difficult process. That is the entire reason why muskets replaced the longbow in warfare. Muskets load slower and aren’t as accurate as a bow in a master’s hands, but only take a few months to become proficient in it’s use. When one needs soldiers they need them quickly, and the few months to become an expert marksman with a musket or rifle is nothing compared to the few years it takes to reach the same level of precision with a bow.

As someone who has shot with bows and Rifles for along time, let me add a little perspective here……

  • In order to hit a proper grouping with a Rifle at 20 yards, it took me almost 2 months., The Rifle was an M-16, 5.56m, 6 bullets. (proper 2.5-3 inch grouping in a Standing position. Hitting a 1 inch grouping in Prone took all of 5 minutes)
  • To hit the same grouping with a Bow, it took me the same amount of time. 2 months. The Bow was a Longbow, 42lbs @ 28"
  • The grouping was about 2.5-3 inches. Yes, it took 2 months for me to shoot that with a rifle at 20 yards in a standing position, and took just as long with a Longbow.
  • 20 yards is equal to about 720 range in Guild Wars 2 (assuming 1 range equals 1 inch)

Lets go outside and go to 30 yards (range was more like 25 with the rifle, and 30~2 with the Bow)

  • The 20 yard grouping with am M-16 was enough for the Military. In my own time, I bought and trained with an M-14, which shoots a larger caliber bullet (7.62×51). Its a heavier rifle, has more recoil, and it took me some time (3 months) to get a 2.5-3 inch grouping at 30 yards in a Standing position.
  • It took me about 3 months of hard training to hit the same grouping with a Longbow. You have to account for the bows arc, gravity, wind, etc. by the time you are aiming at 30 yards. At 20 yards, you don’t actually notice it all that much, depending on the arrow used.
30 yards is equal to 1080 range in Guild Wars 2.

50 yards (1800 range in Guild Wars 2)::

  • It took another month before I had a 2.5-3 inch grouping with the M-14 at 50 yards. Still in a Standing Position. Even then, I had about a 75% success rate in getting that same grouping after this.
  • With a Longbow, it took me even longer. I had the fundamentals down, but there are more variables to account for with a Bow at any range compared with a Rifle. By this time, my skill with a Rifle finally eclipsed my skill with a bow, after 7 months.

100 yards ::

  • Can’t get a 3inch grouping with either weapon.

I really can’t believe it took you the same amount of time to hit the same group of targets with a gun and a bow. That really doesn’t make any sense especially if you were in standing position.

Also, FYI shoot a target 20-30 yards does not make you a marksman of the corresponding weapon. You are merely stating how much time it took you to hit a few targets.

Personally I hate being forced to switch, it’s just so limited. I would have liked to have been able to build 1 and 2 element specialists as well as 4 element generalists.

Cause 5 weapon skills isn’t limiting ~.~?

no? every other class has 5 skills per weapon…

with interesting, well-implemented traits, 5 weapon skills could easily be every bit as good/flexible as 20.

*10 in total, 5×2.

every other class has 5 skills per weapon.

5 skills per weapon.

5 skills.

per weapon.

gg.

Which is why he points it out that using “…it’s just so limited” and ’I’d like to specialize in one attunement’ in a single thought is silly.

you’re conflating “limited” solely with #skills when I was clearly referring to builds/playstyles.

being forced to play Ele as a 4-element generalist is clearly more limiting than being able to also specialise in 1 or 2 elements.

No I’m not. But Ele is balanced around having access to 20+ skills which is why most of them are weaker than similar skills of other profession’s weaponsets. No matter how much you specialize in Fire, it doesn’t change the fact that using a stun, chill, or immobile after a Meteor Shower is very effective. Ie. You can specialize BUT ‘dancing’ is still important for being most effective with Ele. That is the design and won’t be changed. Engis do this same kind of ‘dancing’ for maximum efficiency for the exact same reasons. That’s why these two professions are considered, by most, to have the highest skill ceiling in the game.

Sadly, this has always been a problem with the Guild Wars community. Dating back even to the GW1 days.

People tend to just follow trends instead of respecting versatility or other perspectives. I will give you an example…

Hammer Burst got nerf because of Mace/Hammer stuns practically being unchanged since launch. A few videos surface and all of a sudden Hammer Burst is OP. Damage has always been the same the only thing that changes is the perspective of what a Hammer.

Reminds me of playing with weird Warrior builds in GW1 went 15+ win streak RT three times straight all the while having people telling me how my build was not viable.. lol

You people are insane. How can you not like skyhammer. It forces people to change the way they play conquest. Conquest itself is based on pretty boring principles.

I know what you are thinking… but but i like point control defense playstyle. So do i.. in first person shooters..

It takes 0 skill to play bunker builds of any type. Yet this playstyle is encouraged from the standard conquest maps. Skyhammer is the only exception to that rule. Skyhammer is not just a battle of 0 skill bunker players. It is a battle of wits. Its player vs player vs surroundings, it forces to constantly evaluate whats going on around them and react. What is not to like?.. unless you enjoy cheesin it up with your bunker style play.

Rather than posting your QQ I hate skyhammer comments. Try explaining your point of perception and viewpoints.

If you want to camp one element at all times, you’re not getting the point of ele’s. In fact that’s what other classes do.

And I agree with Fuzzion.

Someone has not played Guild Wars 1. =)

I understand where you are coming from in this game. But stance dancing is only a requirement with dagger. Which also happens to be the most balanced weapons for this class.

Unfortunately, I don’t really have any ideas to bring to the table so I will just take a seat back and see where this discussions ends up.

Ok I like where this thread is going. Lets continue this discussion. These are the weapons we have been discussing thus far.

1) Crossbow

2) Knives/Daggers

3) Pistols

4) Staff

5) Spear (New weapon)

FYI More than likely I will keep editing this post if the thread continues with new ideas. =D

Brace yourself this may originally sound a little weird.

But I dont think crossbows fit the ranger class at all. Crossbows were originally designed to replace archers as essentially anybody can shoot a crossbow but only skilled persons are able to wield a bow.

Crossbows are heavy and slow (reload speed). Rangers are light armored and swift. I am not intending on shooting down your idea but I just don’t think that it fits the class lore. =(

I would gladly second different types of bows like from guild wars 1, or maybe throwing knives/daggers, or even pistols.

So much fail in this thread. Get out of hotjoin and you will see very little to no MM or Turret builds. lol

To be honest I play more in hotjoin than I do in solo que (at least as engineer). What are some of the better alternatives in solo que?

Turrets do need a nerf. It all goes back to the comments ANET has made about passive skillplay and how they want to minimize it.

Turrets are currently the easiest to play spec in the game and get they still do very well.

I can understand your point but I want you to think beyond your point in regards to the passive playstyle and about the class as a whole (if you actually play engineer). What are the alternatives??

Skyhammer is the best map in my opinion. It is the only map that does not promote bunker builds and brings that certain “WTF” factor towards pvp. =)

It’s more of a chess match, a battle of wits, vs the battle of faceroll bunker builds.

So focus on bunkers only and forget the rest? Seriously, do you know that Skyhammer instant kill thief? Imagine it….

With all due respect.. quoted for the irony. =)

Yes. It is not performing. Rush at 1200 units carries a 100% miss rate, even though it is in range and target is still. Whirlwind attack often fails to strike hit 2-3-4 and when range indicator clearly shows it is in range at 600 units, it will miss all strikes. It is also prone to terrain fail. It fails to achieve it’s maximum range and is halved by inclines. So yeah, it fails to perform as listed. If this doesn’t answer your question then you’re playing some sort of naive card. When it doesn’t strike when in range, when it fails to hit the listed 4 times at point blank range and fails as movement skill if there is a gentle incline, then yeah..that a weapon failing to live up to its description.

Rush carries a 100% missrate? Your whirlwind misses all the time and gets bugged in the terrain? You must really be the only one having problems with this.

1. Rush can be evaded. Rush does pretty high damage for the mobility it grants, thus the animation is pretty obvious and can be evaded easily.
Rush will never carry you 300 units away from your target, unless the target is moving very fast or is teleporting.

2. When you perform Whirlwind, your character spins and your sword has to hit the enemy to deal damage. So if your target stands to your left and your character spins anticlockwise, then yes, your Whirlwind won’t hit him. And that’s your fault.

3. Whirlwind bugs into the terrain? Never happend to me, unless I tried to spin over an obstacle. Also, you should try Point Blank Shot. At uneven terrain, that skill bugs out more often than not.

At last, let me tell you that it doesn’t look very smart of you judging my skills without even seeing me once.

The only problems I can see is that the pathing of Rush could be improved and that Whirlwind behaves rather strange under the effect of Quickness.

Or if fixing Rush is so difficult, they could just change the skill into an ability where the dmg is front loaded at the point of contact. Like charge, but change the vertical slash into a horizontal slash (on contact) or get rid of the swing animation all together.

Guild Wars 2 PvP is not PvP. Its Build vs Build.

When I heard about how balanced this game is…

So what? ALl you doing is stating the obvious that happens in every game in some underhanded way that attempt to make it seem like some unique problem in this case. There is not competitive game with a PvE side in which builds are not relevant. For that matter, I cannot think of a game that is purely competitive that builds are not strongly relevant.

But he really has a point.. I completely disagree with the way dev balance pvp in this game. But I can understand why we have the problems that we have. I do like the idea of having certain skills associated with certain weapons per class. But I think if they either added new skills or new weapons would provide much better results.

I feel that they could accidentally create new meta builds and establish more hard counters. This would cause less effort towards so called “balancing” and more towards creating or progressing with the game.

I can understand your contempt towards turrets. I feel the same way towards Warrior in settlers spamming their stupid little bow (Warrior has pretty much been my main since forever).

But back to the topic.. I do not use only turrets.. I am THAT engineer who will try to incorporate flamethowers, grenades, bombs, wrench kits, and alchemy gun (whatever its called) but in terms of viability its miles behind turrets.

You have to expect people in this game to follow the trends… for some reason I cannot explain the cookie cutter mentality has ALWAYS been a part of this Franchise’s community.. going all the way back to noob arena in Guild Wars 1.. I have tried breaking this mentality for years but to no avail.

In other games (like World of Warcraft) people actually like to see people who achieve success in duels or otherwise using different builds.. I wish people had a more open mindset here but that is just the F2P world we are a part of.

I believe the problem is the King of the Hill style gamemodes. PvP is completely one dimensional and promotes non skilled bunker builds. If they had gamemodes that required defending/assaulting and maybe some mobile elements this would not be an issue.

I am in agreement with this – well, that PvP pretty much promotes bunkering down more than anything else. I’ve had an idea for a new PvP mode, that would bring mobility back into the game, though.

Here’s the basic idea:

  • There’s a golem or dolyak, something that needs to be escorted.
  • When escort objective reaches a goal point, the ‘round’ is won.
  • It can be hijacked by the opposing team at any point, as long as they can defeat the defenders and stay within the Capture circle.
  • It proceeds along a grid, or through various paths, with the controlling/escorting team directing it at each intersection.

With this idea, bunkers would need to be able to stay mobile, and would rely on recon party members to guide them. If the mode found itself just turning into Thief Warrior Wars or something, then there’d need to be secondary/support objectives to hold – maybe an artillery emplacement, or a barracks that spawns NPCs for each side, or both.

That is a very good idea.. its different and it’s fun. I hope that the game devs can see this post.

Because they allow engineers to feel like engineers. The same reason I only use longbow/shortbow with my ranger regardless of viability. I was using turrets long before they became the trend.

Also, engineer has been nerfed so much that there isn’t really any other viable alternatives left.

Yes the profession is highly versatile and complex but maybe you should be sharing these alternatives with the rest of the community if you are trying to change the trend.

Its an ability based on standing still and you never even get to finish the full chain anyway. I don’t really feel any kind of way about the 100b nerf because greatsword is a mobile weapon. It should not be based on standing still to do damage…

Again.. GOOD JOB ANET.. you are finally starting to think about these things the right way.

Is it a good class design that warriors can hit like trucks and run away as soon as they feel threatened?

Meanwhile you can hit like a truck and just go invisible multiple times… =) Very bad comparison.

@Dondagora

That is a valid argument in regards to the shatter. However, I still feel that clones should still be limited. For example, a Necro’s death shroud has an internal cooldown between uses but it also requires life force to access. This is not a limitless resource. The same logic applies to adrenaline for warriors.

As I have already pointed out “I do know that Stealth is not spammable (at least I think)” that is why I did not respond #failure to read my entire question

I am aware that clones are capped at three as far as dealing very little damage we know thats not true. Necro’s minions have cooldowns, so does just about every other skill in this games.. clones do not.

The problem is that there is no internal cooldown for this ability, which means they are spammable. I believe that is bad game design and wanted to get your perspective.

This has bothered me for a long time now. I know you guys are not going to like what I’m about to said and I am sorry if this is something that has been said before (I can’t imagine that it hasn’t).

Anyone care to discuss/debate why Mesmers should be able to just spam illusions (with no internal cooldown) and invisibility in PvP?

I am no mesmer so feel free to correct me if I have said anything incorrectly. I do know that Stealth is not spammable (at least I think) but the combination with multiple stealth abilities and along with perma clones… is this really good class design?

Let down the flood gates.. I want to discuss this with you mesmers for your input.

I wondered if my post actually made a difference with the upcoming changes to the greatsword. A-net has at the very least decided to fix the broken burst skill for the greatsword.

There seem to be a few people on the forums a little upset that 100b is getting nerfed along with some of the passive damage modifiers. While I can understand nobody likes the idea of nerfing their damage… just know this is a step in the right direction. It is very bad class design that using a burst skill results in a dps loss.

Good job to the QA team… while this may not address all of the issues for Greatsword Warriors I feel that this is a step in the right direction.
