So…I just want to put this out there..

I think I’m the only one you need for dungeon party with me, idc whatever you wear (I hate looking at links) as long as you are at least recommended lvl, listen to advice if you are new—and I will guide you through! I run 8pm-10pm est. Add me as a friend and whisp me around that time (usually farming cursed shore otherwise). I personally think following directions is the most beneficial for a dungeon with me, I usually can take care of the rest for you guys—Guardian at your service.

I personally think I am all that a team needs for a dungeon I don’t care about levels if they join me. I just hate people who join “my” group (like the heck, I’m the one who created it) and tells everyone what to do without explaining throughly (team effort yo). No problem though, cause I take the time to ask and explain to ppl who are new. It’s nice if people know how to res, I don’t care much about people constantly being downed unless they aren’t even trying. But seriously, people need to slow down sometimes and acknowledge the team instead of assuming we are npcs who will follow you around and do what you wish. Anyways, this is mostly referring to AC dungeon, others are much more foreign to me. If anyone is in Sanctum of Rall and wants to AC dungeon around 8pm-10pm est, hit me up—I don’t mind helping your new chars to victory as long as you are lvl35 though haha.

So…any tips on the best utilities to use underwater? I might want to tackle Hotw dungeon and I hear it’s mostly underwater so I want to be a good assest to my team as opposed to dead weight haha, I try to avoid fighting in water as much as I can :\

Don’t do it! For these reasons:

1) I’ll be even more envious ;(
2) It has some bugs to work out aka it has no footstep effects and some other things that aren’t flashy as the individual legendaries themselves so wait till that’s fixed before merging
3) I’ll be envious

Hey, sorry for the late reply but I am also a fan of the greatsword and can offer some suggestions. First let’s start with traits.

[Traiting]
For survivability, I must say our valor trait line is one of the most favorable—due toe “Altruistic Healing,” for most effective defensive builds, this is something you really want to consider investing it (plus it gives you 30% crit damage!). I also personally think it only makes sense to get the 20% reduction on cd for greatsword if you want to do a greatsword build so you might want to consider the honor trait line too (not maxed, you can get the trait skill at 20). If you try that out, you’ll have 20 points left to focus in wherever you want pretty much. Adding power will increase damage stabiliy but as far as effective trait skills go, it’s pretty useless traitline (imo at least, it would be better to get berserker armor to make up for power and invest your traits into something more useful) because traits are more for the trait skills than stat bonuses. Also at a certain point, crit chance + crit dmg have a much higher gain than power.

[Off-hand weapon]
You’ve got a few options here. It really depends on what you want to do and your experiences. If you HATE fighting ranged people, I’d suggest the scepter…that’s like the best thing we go in terms of range haha (you’ll see a lot of threads complaining about our lack of range). If you want to put more emphasis on your greatsword, might I suggest staff? it’s a good default to switch to for a bit to kite and fight mid-range, but the best part is empower (which is a weapon skill that gives you 12? stacks of might)—do that and weapon swap to gs to harness that great burst of power, by the time you are on cd, you can do it again pretty much.

[Armor]
Knight or Berserker—depending on if you want more defense or power.

[Utilities]
Shouts is very useful, if you are going for 20% gs cd reduction, the first trait skill in the honor line can be used for 20% shout cd reduction. Save Yourselves or Retreat is a good investment, to get around places for sure but also for manuevring around your opponent with great boons (retreat for speed and that amazing aegis, and Save Yourselves (SY for short) for all other boons).

Get Renewed Focus! Unless you want to support your team, don’t go for tomes imo. You get 3 secs of invulenrability and yoru virtues are reset. (Using virtues heals you quite a bit with altruistic healing btw).

[Runes][Sigils]
Almost missed this, but most people say for most guardians, its best to invest in boons duration in which 2 monk runes, 2 water runes, …er I forget the other 2, would help. I personally use rune of lyssa for the 6th rune effect where it makes my elite skill remove all conditions and give me all boons for 5 seconds. It’s a great recovery skill that kinda just brings your character back to life haha plus I feel like a super saiyan doing it.

Sigil…of strength is the best to go with with good crit chance (40%+ with or without fury).

I just would like to get a good idea on everyones’ weapon choice and why they chose it. I’m a little bit stubborn and refuse to use anything outside of the blade family (sword and greatsword) haha but that’s mostly for style than anything else. Also, I love multi-hit moves both of which sword and greatsword provide and moves that allow you to get closer to the opponent.

leap of faith -> symbol of wrath -> whirling wrath -> weapon swap -> (i dont know names for swords) “sword move that teleports you and blinds” -> “projectile blades”

^ my most used offense combo, everything else is used for interrupting enemies from doing moves (binding blades 2nd skill does wonders or the shield’s shield of absorption) and pushing the enemy around

My huge weakness is projectiles, but consecrations make up for it…but if not, gotta switch out sword/shield with staff…may try mace but it just isn’t me ;(

Yeah, retreat and sanctuary with ground targetting is useful for escape. I go in normally and do as much damage as I can until 1/3 health, then I retreat (gain aegis along the way) and heal and then if they are still pursuing me—I land a good ole sanctuary to knock them down for a bit. Now that renewed focus is not a stationary move, you can use that too for invulnerability. I use rune of lyssa to get the massive boon activation for 5 seconds too. So that’s 3 sec of invulnerability → remove all conditions + 5 secs of every boon. But if you want to roll with the typical rune of monk or rune of water like most guardians, das cool too.

It depends, since I focused a lot on toughness and vit, I went for bersker to make up for the lack of dmg output. Given that you have good skills that give you boons and whatnot, altruistic healing should be your core salvation in saving yourself from dying. But again, if you want to be even moreeeeee tanky, you can go for knight, but crit dmg/chance with multi hit weapons like gs and sword, bersker would be great imo : )

Like seriously, I feel for all you people who actually appreciate the Guardian, so let’s just stop wasting our time trying to defend it and play it, if there’s less Guardians, we are more rare and unique anyways.

So I feel like the best way to do this is…people who dislike Guardians now can leave and comeback if you feel like it. Happy Halloween! [endthread]

I think general rule of thumb is valor and honor, definitely get that altruistic healing to cover your toughness/healing balance, then you should focus your other points towards whatever else you’d like—depending on your utilities. If you are a shout person, honor—gs is also good with honor with the 20% skill reduc; if you like consecreations, go with virtues (if you like boons 5 in virtue is a must!—that added effect is so useful) But yeah, think about what weapons you want to roll with for right now and your skill focus, and good luck!

And, tell me again why we have few skills to choose from? I think you just don’t want to choose them lol.

I am not rerolling. Can you tell me your trait build and weapons? There’s always room to adjust, and it’s not like this patch really did much to the guardian as a whole. And the guardians have a lot more to them than just one set of utilities, weapons, elites. I can literally take on 4-5 people in wvw and down almost all of them, 2-3 people i can eliminate. The class is not nerfed, it’s just whatever you had set your eyes on initially has changed. There are other options, if you do not want to try them, then I guess reroll. And this patch doesn’t affect pve that much so I do not know why you would want to reroll…for pvp you can seriously just make a level 1 char and try him out, but keep your char for pve and wvw because SY still has its effects in wvw and pve (which I’m guessing SY is your “last straw” patch update which is making you consider rerolling.

So, uh, wolfie, I think you are getting the wrong idea..when people say we are a support class, that means we have a lot of skills that affect not only us, but others as well—that does not mean we cannot use it for our own selves.

I personally built my guardian for myself only and I think the role of Guardian is shouldn’t be a “Hey you—guardian over there, gimme some support plox bc that’s what you do” but more of a “Dang, I’m glad you are on my team”. Support is always there but we aren’t designed only for support, it’s just we can’t stop our virtues and some utilities from saving people from conditions or giving them might or whatnot.

Two things on SY patch, imo the nerf for SY shouldn’t be a big deal to anyone unless they pvp, wvw is even safe from this update which in my opinion affects your “true” character a lot more because it includes your armor specific focus.
Another thing is that SY is great and all, but it shouldn’t be your source of boons, otherwise you are taking the simple route to the class—think about what people actually use SY for—it’s not very strategic is it? I’ll admit to using SY for a great burst of strength and not really timing it well to get conditions off my teammates.

Guardians have so much to them, but we can’t have it all, the whole purpose of many skills and traits allows you to cater your character to your own liking. If an update has affected your gameplay to the point of uncomfortability, then you need to learn not to rely on too many things (I really hope a select bunch of skills weren’t the make it or break it for you when choosing a guardian—appreciate everything & learn what it has to offer). What is the problem with guardians really? We still have glass canon builds getting up to 11k damage output, we still have many options to break stuns and remove conditions. Guardians can do whatever the heck they want, so dont’ assume and mis-interpret updates.

Ohhh yeah, superior rune of Lyssa is now more worth it~

Also, numbers you will see is roughly 1k-7500k, on average 2k-4k in “boon” mode (which should be your status more than half of the time before cd ends). I used to do a glass canon build seeing up to 11k dmg but I died so easily and that made it inefficient, if you want I can give you my build for that. Also, if you aren’t like me and want to focus in consecrations, you can probably get more dmg output if you put the 20 in zeal (maybe for that 5% gs dmg?) or radiance for that precision (crit chance baby)

Didn’t see this post until today, but I am working on a greatsword build as well catered towards crit. The idea behind the greatsword is to take advantage of its skills, especially whirling wrath which gives multiple hits per activation and also has quite a low cd time. In that respect, here are key points to my build:

- I got all pow/prec/crit dmg armor, traits are mostly on valor and honor—Don’t worry about power because you can focus your armor and trinkets on that area
- I focused on valor and honor trait line mostly so you are looking at 0/0/30/20/0 in my advice, you will have 20 leftover to focus on specific utilities. 30 in honor mainly for altruistic healing and 20 in honor to get that amazing 20% skill cd reduction on gs.
- Use “Save yourselves” for fury, the outcome of your pow/prec/crit dmg armor will give you high crit dmg and crit chance, getting that fury to increase your crit chance will maximize the multiple hits of whirling wrath
- Use sigil of strength which gives you might per crit hit at a 30% chance, also useful due to whirling wind

Other thoughts
- I use a sword and shield because of more multi skills it offers and being able to recycle protection with the shield skills (plus valor trait favors shields)
- You can probably use a staff and use the empower weapon skill right before switching to gs and then use save yourselves, that’s 12 might + +20% fury + all other boons it offers + extra might given from sigil of strength

I assume you just want to focus on gs mostly so staff would be a good secondary to buff you up before swapping to gs.

See screenshot, and my crit dmg is 91 which is close to 3x my damage (after a certain point, crit dmg will give you more results than power but you need that high crit chance in which the boon fury becomes very useful!)

Consecration/shout focused.
Greatsword/Sword&Shield.

Pros: Can take a lot of hits and dish out high damage. A lot of control. Sanctuary is my best friend.

Vulnerabilities: Knockdown (I’m aware of this and working on strategically using save yourselves when that happens)
