Unless ANet explains why it is considered offensive we’re just playing the guessing game here. There are many names and words that mean different things in different languages.
EDIT: Don’t get me wrong, I’m not hailing Urbandictionary as a 100% accurate source but it’s not entirely wrong either. In this case I wouldn’t even think of considering such a name offensive.

If your laptop shuts down with GW2 closed and Prime95 running, then you have your answer.
i dont get this sentence :<
does that mean theres another reason for the crashes than gw2 or what?
cause so far the crashes ONLY appeared when gw2 was opened, so im already pretty sure gw2 is the source (or maybe the graphic card or something)
edit: so i also downloaded a program for temperature checking and heres the result of what ive seen:
just browsing through the internet:
mainboard, graphic card and processor are all around 50°
starting gw2: mainboard, graphic card and processor heat up to around 80°
playing a pvp match: mainboard, graphic card and processor heat up to 95°
mainly the laptop crashed when i was right in a pvp match, but today he also crashed for the first time while i was sitting in hotm (meaning that my overall temperature wasnt as high as in a pvp match)
i have absolutely no idea what it could be -.-
dust? fan? graphic card? heat paste?
What I was saying is, run Prime95 full CPU test with GW2 closed and if the laptop turns off, you’ll know it’s overheating. Think of it as an alternative way of raising the temperature for testing purposes.
If you haven’t cleaned the laptop in a while it could be dust, if not you could try adding some thermal paste and make sure the cooling system is seated correctly.

Doubt you’ll get the name back since ANet seems to be aware of this word, Heck this is the first time I’ve read that word :O
Yea but here in the real world we don’t all use a random made up urbandictionary
Ive seen char names way way way worse that what the OP had, and they are still running about after being reported.
Yea but here in the real world we also use the name Di** which isn’t from some random made up urbandictionary and as far as I know it isn’t allowed in GW2 either, for obvious reasons. What I’m trying to say is that even if the name is something real, ANet will still ban it if it has an offensive meaning, I’m sure you get the picture.
Agreed on your second point though, I’ve seen a lot of real offensive names, some of them are made up of 2 words with the first letter flipped yet they still roam around.
A little piece of history regarding Urbandictionary:
A GW1 boss was named “Alana PekPek” for 3 years, It was then in 2008 that they changed the boss’s last name to “KepKep”. This is a small line from the GW1 wiki page: This boss was renamed in the 14th August 2008 update (its original name is considered offensive in Tagalog).
Urbandictionary lists this word just as offensive, It’s not exactly made up. Maybe you should think before posting such comments.

Gold sellers or not, this is a worthless (read stupid) mechanism, yeah sure it slows gold sellers from selling stuff quickly to Trade Post, but as common sense suggests, even gold sellers can wait a minute and start selling things again.
As someone who runs a lot of dungeons for a couple of hours straight, this is incredible annoying.
As others have mentioned, this is usually the way a system protects itself when it overheats.
Your laptop is shutting down only when you play GW its because it’s the only software that’s constantly utilizing 100% CPU so it heats up.
You can easily find out if it’s overheating 100%, grab Prime95 (a CPU stress test utility): http://www.mersenne.org/download/

Crashes in-game, no discernible pattern

I’m noticing a certain pattern in these logs:
Memory at address xxxxxxxx could not be read
Memory at address xxxxxxxx could not be written
I would suggest running Memtest86 and leave it testing overnight: http://www.memtest86.com/
When I built my pc last January GW2 gave me a lot of problems, especially similar reports and odd behaviour, memtest discovered some errors in some 9 hours test, replacing the ram fixed the issue.
It was worth mentioning that I haven’t had any major problems with the rest of the system, but GW2 seemed to be VERY sensitive to it.
I’m not saying your ram is definitely faulty but it should be checked.

Have you tried this program yet: http://www.coderbag.com/programming-c/disable-cpu-core-parking-utility
It gives a nice boost in CPU intensive games, not just GW2.
I usually dub it as Meh-ta (aka the build for people who don’t know how to play otherwise) but whatever.
Best advice is to start your own group, whoever doesn’t like your class or play style is free to leave.
Personally I main a guard and ranger, while 2 of my friends play necro almost 90% of the time. Sometimes it takes a while for us to get 2 more people but mostly it fills up quickly and dps is great too.
I never join meh-ta groups myself even when I’m playing guard, joining a free for all group is much better as I know I’m playing with people not robots.
New graphics-card -> awful performance?

An i3-4160 would probably be a better buy than the G3258 for GW2, hyper threading would make a nice boost.
A few links I found out:
GW2 caters a lot to beginners and is generally an easy game with a lack of a real challenge overall.
I don’t mind the message more than the mechanic itself, the game would be a little more challenging without it.

Getting a G3258 and overclocking it would no doubt be great value for money but I wouldn’t recommend it in the long run. Especially for GW2 which is CPU intensive and for other games that might interest you.
An i3 would be a better option if you lack the money for i5/i7 while still giving better performance than your current CPU.
Client crashes during heavy graphic fights
in Account & Technical Support
Posted by: ArmoredVehicle.2849
Just to point out a few things on this:
Since the game is a 32bit application it cannot use more than 4GB Virtual Memory (not physical), once it reaches that amount then it crashes. No matter how much physical ram you have this limit still applies.
Since the game is running with a wrapper the crashes are much more frequent than on Windows. Personally I run this game on Linux with Wine and I have the same problem as those on Mac.
I run other heavy games with Wine and they don’t crash, it’s most probably a memory leak within the GW2 engine and it’s much more noticeable with the larger overhead on non Windows machines.
Best advice I can give is to lower all the graphics, restart the client and then do those large group events. Again, on Linux I can do about 4-5 Vinewrath rounds before having to restart.

Anet is forgetting 1 thing here. Many people don’t know about the HoT mess there is and may buy a retail game without looking at the game’s website once.
Not everyone is very well informed about games. Anet in turn will refuse a refund since it’s from a 3rd party retailer
You can always buy a slot with in game gold. Few days doing dungeons.

You can buy the expansion. It’s $50. The core game is a free bonus for new accounts to help new players to the game.
Help new players eh? Exactly how does lvl 80 targeted content help new players?
You’re right there’s so much lack of content in the base game for a new player that he MUST have both.
This is only Anet helping themselves, hell even a blind could see that.
It’s helping new players get into the game without there being a huge paywall for them. Read the blog post that clarifies this.
Oh really? A paywall and concern about new players. Well in case you’ve been living in a cave you’d notice that even the oldest players get to pay the same amount. This is a paywall for everyone not just new players.
Put it this way:
The expansion + “free game” costs 45e as a bundle.
If they offer the base game at 25e and the expansion for 20e separately that’s still 45e to new customers and without screwing your loyal fans. But this is all negated since they want to force 45e price upon everyone for more filthy profit.
Also in case you forgot. There may still be a few retail copies of the core only game on sale, I only feel sorry for the innocent souls falling into this trap. They would be forced to pay an additional 45e for the expansion since they bought it from a retailer. Now THAT is a massive paywall.
The truth lies here, they want to sell the expansion for 45e and no amount of word play will hide that. This is the best for their profits not the new players or old ones for the matter.
And what you don’t realized is that they priced the expansion at $50. Selling it for less causes them to lose money. The paywall was new players having to pay $50 for the expansion and the ~$25 for the core game. They had incentives to provide the core game for free to new players as this would increase the likelihood of new players purchasing GW2 and possibly buying items from the gem store in the future.
Help new players this, help new players that. It’s all a nice coverage to help them sell the expansion at a high price.
It’s a 2 sided problem. The first being the high price and the second is the 2 in 1 bundle new players are getting over the old ones.
Do you truly believe this is an act of generosity on Anet’s behalf, please don’t be so simple. Maybe you forgot they’re a business and maximizing profit is their aim.
I once thought Anet was different, probably it was true until a few years ago. Now its a different company, gone are the days they treat the game with love over profit.
Don’t be so cynical. It was going to be $50 regardless.
I would pay that much without question only if it didnt come with the core game included.
It would only be fair since all old players had to buy the core game before it.

If that’s how you want to make it out to be then it’s not a bad deal considering I’d end paying 100e in total compared to the new players’ 75e.
Always better 75 than 100 right? Loyal players aren’t exactly all rich and you don’t havr to go back as far as 3 years ago. I’d still feel screwed over even if I bought the game a year and a half ago.
My point is here – this tactic gives them the excuse for selling an expansion at a high price and not becauae they care about player X or Y.
It’s my choice I know, and I choose not to support such a dishonest company. They’re a busness after all, lying for profit isn’t something out of the question.

Oh, we get what you’re saying. We’re just not sure what part of it is “misleading”. They are telling us exactly what’s up: loyalty slot with preorders only. We understand that. Just as we understand your own point. The question is, you said Arenanet is misleading us: so tell us where.
It’s right there on community address:
“Veteran Player Appreciation
For our long-standing fans and loyal players, we would like to say thank you and show our appreciation. "
This is misleading because it’s not appreciation of veteran players. Veteran players do NOT get the additional character slot if they buy HoT after it comes out.
Like I said in my original post, it’s Anet’s way of disguising a protection of their income (i.e. payments from the veteran playerbase) as appreciation of veterans. It is misleading.
Totally, this is their way of shutting up the players, sell more copies and keep a good face while still dodging the main problems. The more they lie and try to clear this off the more I will refuse to buy this.
They don’t care about vets, they care about profit. Personally I don’t give a flying kick about a free char slot. That can easily be obtained with game gold, people seem to forget this fact and yet still praise them.
Its pathetic how they took the word of some people about a free slot and slapped that as an “apology”. If they’re not going to lower the price then they could give 800 gems so everyone spends them how they wish.
I wont be buying this expansion because i dont want to pay double compared to some new player and secondly i dont want to repeat the same story when a 2nd exp rolls out. Got other games to play and more honest devs to give my money to.
And to think for over 9 years I very much loved and respected Anet for their work. Took them a couple of days to completely turn it into pure hatred.
I kind of think having the full package deal is a little bit unfair to people who have been playing since day one. I pre-ordered GW2 collectors edition (for physical I had to go through a third party ie Gamestop) because I loved Guild Wars and wanted to continue supporting. As HoT is not a stand-alone game, I don’t know if its fair to shut out those who were “unfortunate” to have bought the game ages ago, been the first ones out there playing through, and now are forced to pay more for a second copy of the game just to get the expansion.
Given that the majority of players already have the game, why is it not an option to just purchase the expansion especially if we already have the core game?
Agreed.
Had they asked the same price but without the core game there would have been a big chance for me to shut up and just buy it.
They screwed up badly this time.

Wow…
You guys should consider to tatoo on your hearth: “I love ANET”.
(-_-)
It became obvious why gaming industry makes jokes of us (50$ for a little expansion even for players that already have the game) with ppl like you throwing money like that… GG
Yup, totally agreed. No wonder such scummy marketing tactics keep existing.
One thing I forgot to mention in my posts is that Anet is ok giving refunds to those who bought the game for a meager 10$ and at the same time they forgot who bought the game for almost 5 TIMES that price 3 years ago.
What do you say to that Anet. As a company you seem confused how to treat your customers. The solution was very simple yet you opted to go for more profit.
Treat everyone equally then and give a refund to 2012 customers when they buy the expansion.
(edited by ArmoredVehicle.2849)
Yes they are and it seems they are doing everything they can to disprove this.
GW1 worked fine the way it did, don’t fix what isn’t broken. And they can keep their free slot for all I care, still using 4/5 slots from 2012 here, would be useless to me.
A cheaper price so I can use the money on more important things.
1 char slot is a drop in the ocean for some people who can afford to use game gold.
Slash the prices and it’s business.
Eventually, Anet will have to reduce the price to -20 dollars (PAY to VETERAN PLAYERS ONLY) + character slots + some amount of gems + some bank tab/crafting bank/character bag slots + a separate copy of CORE, then charge new players 100 dollars for Core, and 50 for HoT.
Then this will stop, I deleted my wall text earlier because I know someone will get bottom-hurt and start name calling. Thank you all for complaining and keep it going, because I really want more free stuff that I didn’t ask for.. but hey, free is good
No, I’m pretty sure most people would be happy if they just dropped the price to 20 dollars for people who own the game already. They don’t even need to give a character slot imo. And keep the 50 dollars bundle for newcomers.
They’re just talking bullkitten in the community address. They’re saying HoT isn’t stand-alone, not like the campaigns of the previous game (Prophecies/Factions/Nightfall) were. It’s like Eye of the North, which they called an expansion. Well guess what, those campaigns cost the same each time, which was about 40ish (?) at launch, because they were stand-alone. Eye of the North however, was way less, 20 dollars, just because you already needed one of the previous campaigns before you could play this one. There were packs out there in which you could a campaign + EotN. Those cost more, because it included ‘base’ + ‘expansion’.
50 dollars for a half of the maguuma jungle and some extra story quests is not worth the price of a full game at all. Going to compare to EotN again… We got a whole bunch of extra maps, 18 dungeons, heaps of skills, extra heroes,… for 20 dollars.
THANK YOU
Someone that actually has an open mind around here.
Best possible fix for the situation, good job
No, the best possible fix was giving the equivalent of a character slot in terms of GEMS
that way, customers can decide what is best for their account (altoholics will obviously just purchase an extra slot with the additional gems from pre purchase, others will spend it on whatever)That is a 100% everybody wins scenario.
Slots are meaningless to a lot of people, but hey, can’t complain, free is free
Still wrong, a cheaper price would be the best solution. That way your choice to spend them on gems, char slot or you know….something more important in your life.
I would surely pick the last option since money don’t exactly grow on trees.
The way Gw1 and the expansions worked it was perfect. I understand that with HoT there may not be a new starting area and the core game is essential but still nothing prevents them from offering different priced bundles to cater to everyone.
Instead they toy with people’s minds and wallets. Wanting more sometimes ends up getting you less.
You dont seem to understand it at all mate, hot is a 80 expasion there wont be a starting area at all.
Thanks for the correction missed that detail. Doesn’t justify the price tag though. EotN was a lvl20 expansion too and neither came with any other base game nor 45€ back then.
And I’m not your mate.
“For our long standing fans, you now get a free char slot which is easily obtainable with in game gold (about 150g)”. Apparently people are really that blind to ignore such facts.
……Oh and don’t forget you’re still paying 50$ for an expansion of which you barely have an idea about and as a loyal fan don’t even think about getting a separate core only key to use as a secondary account, that would cut profit on Anet’s side.
It’s also very silly, once the preorder is over apparently you’re NO LONGER LOYAL since you don’t get the slot anymore, you’re being forced to pre order to get it.
Anet seems to negate on purpose one of the main reasons about this mess, and that is the full sized price expansion.
If I was in the sane part of the marketing team I would put it like this:
HoT Expansion upgrade – 25€
HoT + Core game – 45€
Deluxe and Ultimate same as above with prices adjusted accordingly.
No wonder these draconic tactics continue to exist, people act like dummies, they’ll take anything that’s thrown at them these days, other games too not just GW2.
It’s a shame that Anet is following in their footsteps instead of walking its own path.
As for Gw1, they released Cantha and Elona After 1 and 2 years respectively, price was fair everyone got a free char slot or 2 and there was none of this crap going on.
Forward to present day, as of a year ago Anet didnt know in what form they wanted to present new content, Living story or expansion?
Games get cheaper over time and Gw2 is no different but it is not so bloody hard to offer a separate expansion upgrade to previous owners and the standard bundle to newcomers, they just do not want to do it. Greed and lazyness took over Anet. Like some people have mentioned earlier, the old team was much better.
Gw1 was made with much love, Gw2 is a cash cow loaded with greed and glowing dollar sign eyeballs.
The fact that the next expansion would follow the same fate is already an indication of where this could be heading and I don’t want to be a part of it.
I never mentioned an ideal price for the expansion. Personally I expected a 35€ one at most which would have been fair in my book, not paying more than that.

What would it take?
A cheaper price tag if you havent figured it out already. Also it has been said that if new expansions are released they will follow the same path. Do I want to give money to such a company? Not a chance.
If people want to be treated like dummies and blinded by a char slot, fine their choice but I’m no such person. Keep in mind one thing though. This free char slot is for pre order only and theres been no mention of it after release.
They could have easily avoided shooting their own foot by offering a separately less priced expansion for current owners. None of this would have happened but greed took its toll and this is where it led them to.
Even worse now word will simply go that players are “satisfied” with this and will overshadow the real issue.
Anet has simply gave me yet another stronger reason why I won’t buy this expansion and potentially following ones
Many people that seem so happy about the char slot are also forgetting 1 thing: char slots can be bought with in game gold in a matter of days.
People have been easily blinded by the char slot that arenow hailing Anet as gods. I find it pathetic as it doesnt address the main issue.
Offering a free char slot will not make me buy the expansion pack.
I supported Anet by buying Gw2 at release means full price. Now they are asking another 50$ for the expansion. Which means a total of 100$ which doesnt exclude my final point = new players are still paying half of what I would have to pay for the same price.
So thanks for the char slot Anet but I will still not buy the expansion for 50$ I ll give my money to a less greedy company.
This is coming from a player with 25k hours in Gw1 and about 7k in Gw2. I was pretty devoted until this.
Its good that this issue is getting attention out of the forums. Im all for supporting a dev and their work but don’t come with such marketing tricks cause that’s when the bridges will start burning.

I was fine in paying the 50$ for the exp. But what changed my mind was the “free” core game.
I’ve been supporting Anet since 2006 and have been disappointed more than once but never enough to not buy an expansion.
This timr they totally blew it for me. New players are treated better.
I refuse to buy anything else from Anet. I refuse to pay for something others are getting better and for the same price.
No thanks. I’ll gladly give my money to a more honest company. I work hard for my money and should at least deserve the same amount of content as the new player over there.

To clarify: I find 45 euro for an expansion totally absurd and I will not buy it at that price, simple as that.
Ultimately this is how I see it:
1. I bought the game on release almost 3 years and paid like 55e, no regrets there.
2. Buying the expansion costs 45e which I will have spent a total of 100e for both the Core Game + Expansion.
3. Then THIS happens: A completely new player comes to GW2 pays 45e and gets BOTH.
If ANet can’t see the logic and complete unfairness in this, then they won’t see my money either.
If the free core game came as an option for a secondary account to existing players, then it might be worth it. Otherwise I find it a complete waste of money for that price.
In bottom line, I won’t buy it at this price and will wait for a discount when the expansion is 15 euro or around that price.

Each ring is “Unique” which means you can only have 1 equipped. For each ascended trinket there’s another with the same stats but different name, for example if you want to use 2 rings with berserker status you need: Crystalline Band + Ring of Red Death.
Same thing applies to earrings. Don’t bother with support, my friend has deleted a character with a Legendary weapon on it by mistake and they didn’t give her neither the character or the weapon back (despite the barrage of emails she sent).
Has the policy about multiboxing changed ?

As long as each key press controls 1 character at a time it’s perfectly legal (as stated by Gaile’s post).
Alt-tabbing and moving your characters one by one is fine.
The first time I had this issue was when I built my new PC, the game would repair at every launch. The culprit was bad RAM, I ran memtest multiple times and it reported errors, the game worked perfectly after I changed the memory.
If you have 500 craft, you can craft 1 Ascended armor / weapon piece per day, at least that’s how fast I get my ascended stuff.
I don’t do anything out of the extraordinary, I just run dungeons everyday. The basic gold reward and selling the recycled materials on trade post net me about 50-60g daily.

Nicely put and straight to the point. This basically sums up what killed my excitement for this game. I barely log on more than an hour.
The daily change was the last straw for me, before I could get my daily 6-8 Achieve points whenever I felt like, now I can’t get any at all.
Just want to add that crafting an ascended item even a mere Bloodstone Brick, it will give the achievement anyway.
I think the achievement should be edited to “Exotic or higher tier item”
