Yeah, like I said, it’s a pitfall in the idea. I’d imagine you’d have to limit interactions to your particular race.

I think this is a little one-sided as I doubt that younger players reside on the Forums as much as older players. I’ve no way to prove that statement, but lets be real here =P.

Honestly, I don’t understand how people can think with such a limited capacity. People act like WoW is the only other MMO with mounts in it. Just because GW2’s competition has this feature doesn’t mean it won’t be beneficial to the game as a whole. I respect valid concerns with mounts, but WoW isn’t one of them. At its core, mounts are just something you can travel around on other than your feet. That doesn’t mean it has to give you a special advantage over other players or detract from the immersion of the world.

As long as it remains cosmetic, doesn’t give a speed boost, and remains on the ground (flying mounts big no, period), I see no good reason to leave it out of the game. Some further positives are something to collect, burns time, another gold sink, and gives players another reason to feel attached to their characters (which keeps players around longer).

Some negatives that would need to be addressed are people blocking NPC’s and mailboxes, possible wall jumping/glitching, and the method of mounting and dismounting the current UI is very restrictive in design.

Dances, to my knowledge, in MMO’s have been limited to a single person. There is no interaction between other people at all. While that’s all well and good, I think that ArenaNet could really nail this out of the park if they go a few steps beyond what we already know they can do. We already have synchronized dancing, so why not evolve that concept? Lets make this solo act a duet.

A rough example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ky3XMDDRdJw#t=51s

Imagine server-wide dance events and masquerades (those Town Clothes have a whole new meaning!). Now, the problem with this would be the animations and pairing up between races. I guess the limiting factor in this would be that you could only group up with your respective race. Still, it’s an entertaining thought that I hope can be expanded upon.

Guild Wars 2 Lack of Porpose

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

If you look at a traditional MMO like WoW, one way they kept people hooked was a gear treadmill. Every patch would release a higher tier level of gear that you’d gain through Raiding or PvP’ing. The thing that most people don’t mention with that design philosophy’s end result very much similar to what ArenaNet has developed. You min/max or create your desired set, and then you’re left without a need to work for gear that makes you stronger in combat. People sit in capitals for the next few months to wait for new content to release. In Guild Wars 2, the speed at which you get to that point is rapidly increased and made available by many different means. You can transmute gear in both games to create your look how you want it.

The distinct difference is with player competitiveness. With the removal of the holy trinity, ease of getting the highest tier of gear, and lack of tools that mark/record your own performance in relation to other players (such as DPS meters), that satisfaction of progression and becoming stronger as time goes on quickly stagnates. It’s a psychological numbers game that ArenaNet doesn’t feel the need to play.

My suggestion to ArenaNet is to give players a way to distinguish themselves from their peers for their efforts other than gear (whether it be visual or stat values). Timed dungeons, an expansion upon achievements (which is needed direly anyways), and possibly some sort of competitive activity Guilds can participate in would be quite healthy, I believe, for the longevity of people’s attraction toward this game.

TL;DR – Guild Wars 2 lacks the competitive drive between other players with the lack of a gear treadmill or holy trinity. There should be some sort of activity players can do to give that satisfaction of accomplishment and willingness to increase skill to overcome obstacles. Something to say, “Hey, look at me and what I’ve done that makes me so awesome due to my hard work. Everyone looks at me for inspiration and a benchmark for your own ability.”

Edit Afterthought: I’m mostly talking about PvE in my post. While PvP also is lacking currently, there is a massive effort already underway to expand upon what they already have. Soon™ is painful to wait for, but it’ll come eventually.

Toughness Vs. Vitality

As an Elementalist, I generally try to roll with ~14.9k health and 1.9k toughness in tPvP. Vitality doesn’t stop a Thief 2-shotting me with Steal > Cloak’n’Dagger / Backstab > Heartseaker, but toughness can pillow the damage a lot, and I can recover after the initial attack. Our off-healing can compensate for the lower health pool as well.

It’s definitely been worth it! The fact that there is no subscription gives a whole new meaning to how much money verse content you get since they have a dedicated Live team that will be constant free updates. I think people don’t realize the immense amount of content they have to work with. None of it becomes obsolete with the release of a new expansion, so it’s only going to go up from here.

It shouldn’t be 10 seconds long, period. That’s a lifetime and a half in PvP. In tPvP, it’s practically a death sentence if it’s used on you in a 1v1 situation unless you run away off the cap to give the enemy a capture point.

I’m hoping to see Leaderboards and an ELO ranking system like in LoL that can act as a malleable, progressive form of advancement other than gear. The one thing that PvP’rs like to wear as a testament to their skill is a title and leaderboard rank.

MOBA-style PvP sounds like it would be awesome in GW2. Think of Legacy of the Foefire on a larger scale with a few NPC’s like Svanir and Chieftain thrown in, and possibly a group of Centaurs to poke fun at the LoL wolves. So much potential!

At any rate, I want to see ArenaNet step outside their comfort zone with sPvP. Conquest is great, but it gets repetitive. We need non-Esport based play as well in a sPvP setting (which, like Capricorn, has no ties to tPvP). Think of them as the Battlegrounds in WoW if tPvP was considered the “arena” of GW2.

Perhaps it would be better to suggest they replace recoloring of the players armor with a colored tabard or cape. Tabards might be easier to see than capes.

That works, too. My one complaint about it is that it still covers a large portion of your gear, detracting from the gear your worked hard to get.

if you go down the “mounts” path… eventually people will want flying mounts.

Don’t go down the mounts path.

It’s pretty clear that ArenaNet does not plan to introduce flying mounts ever. With that said, I’m personally on the fence with mounts. I love the idea of having something else to grind for, but it does have its own problems.

If we do end up getting mounts, they’ll have to be purely cosmetic. That means NO speed buff while mounted. You should still be able to be affected by swiftness given from other sources, though. That wouldn’t be so bad, right guys?

I wonder where that even started. It’s hilarious!

Anywho… they need to do a tooltip makeover in general. One of my abilities just says “Chill of a foe for a brief time.”… Okayyy, so how long is brief?! As a PvP’r, I need solid, clear numbers! I shouldn’t have to test all my boon and condition effects every time I make a new build when it’s very easy to display it on the tooltip.

1.0 Combat Mode is out now, and it looks awesome! I’m still hesitant about using it because I don’t want to get the banhammer, even though I’m told there’s no way to detect it. Hopefully ArenaNet will come out soon and say specifically (no blanket answer, a direct yes or no) to this mod (or whatever technical term it goes by). It’s frustrating to have something at our disposal that’ll make myself and many other players’ experience so much more enjoyable, and yet feel like we’re committing a crime.

We all love this idea, ANet. If you don’t support the script, than at least put some resources into creating your own version. From what it looks like, it’s extremely easy and fast to make this a reality.

Has anyone tried it out in-game yet? I’m curious to see people’s reactions to how it plays and feels (mostly in a PvP environment).

Even if they did, no sane person would admit it since it is against the rules to use a mod.

Oh yeah, that’s right…

I’m sad.

EDIT: WAIT JUST ONE MINUTE! Aren’t all these people who are using console controller programs/mods (or whatever they use to allow for their integration into the game) technically doing it against the terms of use, then? I saw a ton of guides and videos on it, and it seems quite accepted publicly.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t support “arena” PvP being the event we balance PvP around at all, but I think throwing two teams into a gladiator style arena like in WoW or other games like Bloodline Champions would be awesome to pass the time and an alternative way to PvP.

I can see the division of appearances on both fronts. I do, however, think that you should be able to display your sPvP gear in WvW as an option. For all the work that is needed to be put into such amazing sets, you can only use it in .001% of the game space (i.e. Heart of the Mists and sPvP maps).

I would urge everyone that understands what this actually does to stay vocal. This is such a simple fix and would make combat so much more fluid and enjoyable.

The download was only 119kb in size. It honestly could not be that hard to put in with a quick patch and shows how simple of an implementation that could be. The question now is if ArenaNet actually wants this kind of action movement. We should, and we need to, keep vocal about this idea. My hand (and mouse) will both thank the developers we get this passed.

While it is theoretically slightly less powerful, it is so much more convenient.

From a PvP standpoint, I think it’ll allow for more accurate placement of ground targeting spells on the fly, as well as more efficient movement. It also looks insanely fun! I was watching some Tera PvP combat which has a very similar design to this and it looked great. I really hope we see this as a built-in option in a future patch (sooner rather than later, please!).

While disarming traps would be cool, I think it doesn’t really have room on the action bar to be a skill, and giving it to only Thieves would make them too unique in the sense only they can disarm them in PvP. I think traps are fine where they are now, more or less.

COD mail goes without saying. It’s wanted badly.

Double Jump would potentially break a lot of things that they built the world around. Players would suddenly be able to do things that they initially didn’t intend for them to do, and so on and so forth. Hanging like Altiar would be awesome, though, or climbing up ladders! I’m not holding my breath on either at any rate.

I truly believe that mods give games an enormous amount of life and character. It allows for players to play how they want to (given there are restrictions and limitations). It opens up a lot of options that weren’t available originally. I think the benefits of having a modding community outweighs the cons by tenfold. It not only grants people access to a variety of playstyles, it lets to players put a bit of their own tastes and personality into the game they love.

Now, I understand that ArenaNet’s position on addons have been made clear many times over out of fear of losing control of how they want to have Guild Wars 2 played, but it doesn’t change the fact that modifications like the one proposed in this thread give a whole new life to the game.

Simply put, modders add almost an infinite amount of life to a game. There must be a better solution than a prohibition of all mods. These days (in my uneducated opinion), I think that games such as Guild Wars 2 suffers more without a level of mod support than those with.

Okay, I’m done ranting for the day. =P

I was sad to hear that ArenaNet isn’t allowing the use of this program. It’s really a shame that mods/addons such as these which give the player a more enjoyable experience are not allowed. Maybe some day we’ll see a change of heart and allow monitered addon-support, though I’m not holding my breath. There are both pros and cons to both sides.

Anyways, I hope that ArenaNet takes this idea and utilizes it in a built-in optional mechanic. The combat looked very fun and different to how traditional MMO’s are played. Having it as a preference choice, much like how other scripts such as click-to-move in games like WoW, makes it that much more enjoyable to play by gamers of all tastes.

Please take this into consideration, Dev Team. We’re all pulling for this one.
