it is pretty close to a cookie cutter sepc imo. although is would drop healing symbols for empowering might as the “standard” issue.

healing symbol are only effective when you also trait for large and long duration.

I do not care for the 10 points in zeal. the 10% damage against burning foes is nice but i find the all other lines have stronger benefits. Valerous defense can be very strong if you pay attention to and 10 in radiance gives overall more options to trait diffrently with other weaponsets. In zeal i only find the 10% appealing. the rest is not that great

this spec works great with every weapon besides scepter and torch.

seems to me that the toughest norn betas the toughest charr. Which I hate. but the big male norn is just brute force.

Strength on mammels ist pretty much proportional to weight and size of bones. Norns a little bigger even if a char stand up straight (/salute) … on the other hand they got a pretty haevy head and due to their feline nature should have a big advantage in the open. CLose combat – wrestling style – a norn would probably destroy them. Human bites are deadly too you know…. they can kill ya (very slowly) if not treated

Cultural armor would be the best. Normal helmets are modeled for more humanoid races. That being said, once I got the Tier 3 heavy helmet, I will never trade it in for anything else.

Except if you have the “beard” face. That one clips with the T3 heavy helm. If my memory doesn’t fail me, that’s the only helm from the cultural side that does clip with that face. =P

i’m of opinion if you want to take multiple hits, go tough. if you want to take big dmg, go vit

would you mind elaborating on that? i could never grasp the concept of that differentiation.
under the assumption that one has enough HP to initially survive the big hit and armor lowers the damage by a specific percentage it should make no difference whatsoever if you for example mitigate 10% from a 10k hit (1k damage) or from 10x 1k hits (10×100 = 1k damage).

you are right but also wrong.
This would only be true if you would recieve 10 hits all at once. We can assume that 10 hits are applied in some timeframe that lets you react to the source of the damage like avoiding it, healing it, pumping defense whatever.

in addition the topic is about tough vs. vit. vit eats the damage tough mitigates it.

it really works if that helps… AH became a close to mendatory trait for guardians. i always miss it if i do not have it.
but like brutaly stated there is actually not one single build. lots of options around AH

infact you can use the build with greatsword and still get good results because of attack 3 on GS 1 which also adds a boon frequently.

You can choose mace/focus and shift to 15/0/30/20/5. trait for burn after block and 10% more damage vs. burning target (which will be the case all the time) —> my favorite pve solo spec for multiple targets. (its not a dps spec)

Vitality or Toughness

both important yet i would give toughness more room in your setup. vitality is important to handle condition damage. If your build is setup to remove a lot of that anyways toughness is the way to go.

First of all thanks for this great guide, very helpfull.
I have a simple question: talking about dungeons, I usually play with the same group of friends in which I am the only melee.
My impression, but it might be just lack of my skills, is that AH isn’t that helpfull because of the fact my teammates are usually as far as possible from mob, so they don’t take all the boons I spread out.
Am I wrong? Should I go for another setup in order to gain some healing (meditations?)? Thanks.

i play a charr and in case of doubt my warband likes me boons a lot!

I think you two should call it even. You are not gonna change each others opinion, obviously. I still think the guide is great an gives a lot of insight on hammer. If it performs the way you describes and if it suites their prefered playstyle is for everyone to decide on their own.

I did play a lot of crithammer the last two weeks and i liked it. Yet i do feel that while my damage is good I am getting too much heat. (not really getting the hang of dodging a lot). I find myself switchen back to great sword all the time even for mutiple mobs its just a lot easier. Although i am not extremely happy with the damage of crithammer its still a very good build. is it highest dps? probably not. does it have cool synergies? yes it does!

A good GREATsword Guardian will Leap Cancel to cover massive amounts of ground.

this should not be working. last time i checked they changed it. Weapon swap will trigger the full cooldown.

other then that 1000 range against a guardian is as good as 200. JI is too much fun to not have it on the skill bar in pvp.

it is probably the next thing to get nerfed

although i feel that the search for a compromise is a lot better then the gimme gimme attitude i do not see how a 15 sec RC symbol would change your argumentation behind the “my build is broken”-story.

@Ganzo: to limit the strength of a symbol build to the singular boon of one weapon set is pretty short sighted. there are so many traits that can benefit from a symbol its just silly.

i do agree that it is not a really great choice in pvp against skillfull oponents but there are also a lot of ways to keep pepople in your symbol – you turn out out pretty squishy though. if you got the enemy on the hook its pretty kitten hard to get away from a guardian with gs/hammer and the right traits+skills

all true. one thing is to remember is that you still have to carefully choose your traits.

While a warrior will not get back up to 100% HP the guardian can. Infact he can get up to 110%, 120% , 130% and so on. I am absolutley sure that on some single veteran mob i can reach 200% of my normal hp. yet it does nothing because i constantly “overheal” at 100%.

so even with crit hammer build you have to carefully choose how many heals you trait for depneding on you situation (grouped or solo, how much you like to pull).
its nice to kill three veterans at once. question is only if you are looking for the most efficient build.

as stated condition removal is important and most importantly get rid of poisen. everything else is just slows you down. poison can kill’ya! but even a high high defensive build can live through that without any condition removal.

the fun thing about guardian is that with a a base build like x/x/30/20/x you can adjust so much in your playstyle and skills and you do not have to stick to two weapon sets.

can we tank better than warriors. hell yes!

why were gs symbols builds popular? Because they where very strong. 8sec recast on a symbol that lasts for 6secs is pretty perma for me… All right its notvrealy perma but still…

A Symbol that stacks up on vurnability, heals you, grants retaliation, is able to apply crits via decent pbao damage on multiple targets to trigger effects and adds hits to virtue of justice activation.

Sound kind of too Good to be true. Guess what … It is WHEN you can do it with two weapon sets.

GS got the Short Stick and got nerfed. Because with whirling Wind ist already had a Huge pbaoe damage skill. Big whup.

As stated the reason anet gave is Not convincing. Live with it. Anet will not admit to it. Tweaking mechanics sounds better then fixing a mistake.

If you want to Play a Symbol Centered Build you still can…. Just not with gs alone.

These things Happen in mmos… All. The. Time.

anet gave some lame excuse u do Not have to buy. Get over it. gs is still viable. U just can Not have a perma Symbol up anymore. If its Not about the retaliation use Mace as secondery and the you are golden again.

Its basically One variance of the crit Hammer Build might want to check that topic. ah is Not really overpowered imo. The Build is Fun i just found Hammer to be little dull in the Long run

sometimes i think i am the only guardian who plays mace/focus… cant see understand why anyone would want to play something diffren in pve. cooldowns are not that bad on focus.

i do think that the OP has a nice find on its hand.

Why Hating on the Scepter?

i feel a lot of it has to do with the animation and the weaponskins that come with scepters. i find both of it not very well suited for my charr gaurdian.

i do like smite but the fist animation looks childish too. could be a lot cooler (gimme thane aoe from daoc … )

i do like the mechanics though. scepter/torch is just very well rounded.

i say make the projectiles 30% faster
and the lower the swingseed accordingly.
also remove the tennis animation and replace it wiht a thrust or something
make the proectiles arrows of light and not bouncy and i am happy camper.

on the other hand that would take some of the uniqueness from gw2 abilities

i guess the tennis is cool for female toons but hey…

Did you notice what the SoW change also affected?.

GS does not deal a lot of ae damage in events compared to staff. i usually have to hold back in the lower events not to kill the whole wave alone.

i tried GS yesterday and – schock! took me two minutes to learn the new key set.

dont try to be warriors so kitten hard. Just roll one and stop whining.

i hate when people only pick certain things from a post as long as yours – but i still do. be ensured that i read it all.

You said you have mace focus equipped as a second set. mace still provides a nearly permamnet symbol that gives reggen and heals. with ability three you are able to put protection on top. throw i Hammer as weapon swap and you have more symbols up then before. i do not see the how your playstyle is broken now.

it always sucks to loose stuff you got acustomed to, but its not like a they broke game or team mechanics.
