i bought 25 containers from the gem store but with converted gold. i did this because i was lucky in the past. and i got lucky again.

got one ticket, two minis i think around 300 taffies and loads of food (which is not that bad)

i would rather buy a weapon claim ticket for 800 gems even if it have to pay with real money.

(yet i am in a position where i can spent real cash wwhere others might find that stupid.)

i am fully aware that it is a virtual item with no real value. yet it is very simple for me:

i pay for entertainment. i will enjoy my weapon quite some time. going to the movies costs me a lot more for three hours and well … those have the chance to be disapointing too.

yet its not okay if yomebody gets screwed over so badly that he ends up with litterally nothing. by now at least we all know its a gambling game.

btw.: got two minis from the regular coffers as well.

i like the idea although I also think that precise strike as you invision it would be very powerful. two teamed up rangers could run 100% critchance + 100% critdamage on a pinning down an opponent with longbows and delivering 10k-14k rapid fires each.

not saying rangers do not deserve a dps boost but it would be a hugh addition in just one patch.

i do feel however that all signets have their merits even the increased condition damage sikply for the active effect. 3secs to 4 secs long range root is pretty nice.

duration would sweet though and would suite the class more.

judgement was left out in the signet buff and was never effected by the trait as it is strong enough imo.

10/25/30/0/5 – Offensive Build for PvE solo farming, and spvp GS – S/F
off ageis burns(for multiples, 10% against bruning when solo target), build uses off block burns and might, excessiv use of VoJ, high condition damage with moderate direct damage. healskill: shelter, food: rare veggie pizza

weapon sigils(with Carrion gear): geomancy – accuracy/geomancy
weapon sigils(with Zerker gear): force – accuracy/force

1. S/F 4, 2, swap to GS – VoJ 5, 3, 2, 1, 1 until weapon swap, 5, 2, 3, 1, 1, 1

standard mobs are dead before i swap back to sword without me taking damage even once. in spvp its pretty much the same (except that players wont die that easily)
mob gets 9 stacks of vurn. constant burn, constant bleed(3),

2. collecting 5 mobs with S/F, VoJ, purging flames, 5, 2, swap to GS – 3, 5, 2, 4, 1, 1, 1, 2
blast finisher from focus, then firery aura, binding blade as early as possible to take advatage of all the ticks, stay in GS until a 2nd 2 and all 5 mobs should be down. cast Voj in between for more blinds and might.

3. dish out damage on everything around you while not getting hit an being extremely mobile

4. i rarely do because i do not need to. (in dungeons i use a diffrent build)

5. play what you like

seems to me that a lot of people argueing that 2 hours a day is casual gaming do not want to admit a certain addiciton to online gaming. it reall is not casual gaming if you have to spent a 8 hours a day providing for yourself or your family.

still you can play gw2 casual but thats true for every game although most tend to pressure you into more.

i play 2-3 hours every other day sometimes i skip a couple of days and i am fine with that. working towards fire bringer and thats it for me after that.

Guardian's should be able to d/w shields.

going for a brass monkey from hellwith dual shields…

my suggestion back then was to make it optional 2h with 3 offensive and 2 defensive skills. increase the shield skin size to 150% and your good to go…

i’d rather have a completely new weapon though halberd sounds nice. 2h axe would get my vote as well as daul mace. i would kill for dual mace!

flashing blade is instant teleport – 2 second stun and a blind is pretty OP even on 16 Sec CD. Up the damage to a regular hit and its fine.

as for the shield/focus skill swap… just switch focus and shield no. 5 and i am happy (and would use shield in any build )

i also use focus because no. 5 is awsome in any situation.

i think you went overboard on everything

no charges on the weapons would force longer CDs on activation – i could still live with that.

Hammer is very strong
FS is very strong
Frostbow is overall very strong (no. 4 just kills it)

shield is very defensive / tactical – it really is great combo weapon (skill 4 is really nice in team play – elementalist can be played to set up a horrifying kill box.

flame axe … well … blast finisher on 2 would be really nice … do that and this weapon is fixed for me – it says so in the friggin skill name!

well in terms of racial skills i regret not taking asura over norn…

basically because asuras get two skills which are very benficial to a condition damage focused build like mine.

norn elites kinda suck leopard form can be pretty cool just for the stealth and charge.

other than that i would choose always the race you like looking at the most.
ask yourself what kind of ele you want to be – not im terms of build – more in a rpg area – and you will be happy for a much longer time.

nothing sucks more than realizing that you have an lvl 80 human engineer but really wanted some fat-bearded-bold grease monkey – hence norn.

I know its not helpful but it reall depends how much youwnat to fit your gear to a specific dungeon and what your spec is.

staff eles also make very good healers and condition removers – not all dungeon need that though. CoF is the best example where dps is pretty much the only thing you want to bring.

for me staff is the beste weapon for hugh aoe codnition damage – many people will tell you condition damage is not good because it reduces the damage potential of the rest of the group.

personally i think the best bet for an ele in dungeons is scepter/dagger regardless of your spec – your team will run 20+ stacks of might all the time making most dugenons pretty fast.

to answer you question: Cant go wrong with P/V/T (dont do knights its not worth it dps wise if you do not convert toughness to a diffrent attribute via food/trait etc.)

other then that…go zerk and use a cantrip x/x/10/30/30 build

i do 0/20/30/0/20 with max condi damage and duration and glyphs. it Works quite well for me. if you have a Lot of condition damage in your Team you might want to Switch Characters though.

before the Boss i swap to s/d for max might and Single Target bleed and cripple

bottom line:

if you do not trait cantrips there might be better stuff to pick.

personally i feel that glyphs deserve a small boost.
inscription is very nice with the heal glyph but for example in fire it should give additional 3 stacks of might instead of one – or at least two just to be in line with cantrips (which are to strong at the moment – but hey! )

I never leave home without it. Every weapon set has some use for the skill. Even a staff ele can cast Meteor Shower in front of themselves to attack somebody running towards them, then flash to the other side when they have been reached in order to make the opponent run back through or avoid your shower, though this is not the only use a staff ele would have for it.

go the extra way of throwing that crippling wall into the mix before channeling meteor… They will have to walk through that twice.

You can also utelize lightning 5 stun twice if you uste it correctly. in staff it is basically avoidance and not so much used offensively.

if you want to be really pro you use Fiery Greatsword 3 and then teleport back into the target for even more damage.

personally i rather have someting else on my bar – and i play a condition damage focused ele. where it is pretty usefull.. the timer is just too long

I dont think anyone i denying that staying in Fire will grant you the highest dps if specced for direct damage.

attunement dancing in staff is for Support and Control. If you have a condition damage Build you are more likely to stay in earth for dps.

in d/d and s/d its Mendatory because you Need the surviveabilty through water attunement (evasive arcana) and you can Stack a Lot of might – which increases dps.

Out of all the “issues” that apparently face Elementalists, you choose the biggest non issue ever in the history of non issues to discuss. Seriously how much time did you waste on this? Not once when I have levelled any profession have I ever, ever been concerned about how long it was taking to unlock those abilities.

If you spend this much time worrying about such a pointless aspect of the class, I only shudder to think what you might come up with in regards to Elementalists over all. Probably an analysis of how Dragon’s Tooth doesn’t fall correctly.

Oh and if a player is taking until level 20 to unlock all the weapon abilities, well then I’d suggest computer games aren’t for them lol.

sorry OP but in the time you did that test you could have easily Mastered all Weapon skills in the game on ele.

you should also realize that just tagging a mob gives you the kill so just hit several events tag all mobs and be done with it in about 10 minutes.

compared to my guardian, necro and my ranger i find ele pretty kitten hard.

compared to my DAoC Cleric and Infiltrator they are all jokes but thats not a class but a game issue in general.

GW2 is pretty easy to learn. Mastering a class never is.

ele D/D is pretty simpke once you got the muscle memory down. playing an ele with that spec is pretty boring in the long run. and only with this spec all the points like easy condition removal and so on are valid.

problem is that this spec is kinda broken.

forge triggers when you need it while earth could trigger at 100% health (respectively a little less due to the recieved hit) yet you might not even need it because your incontrol of the fight.

ele uses churning earth, guardian and his 4 buddys run into it, guardian pops stand your ground… ele is dead because he gets retaliation from 5 sources with retaliation. thats really a great idea.

Just run GS + Sword/Focus in WvW (the only viable roaming build IMO)
Allows two gap closers and really two escapes as well. I don’t run JI but I’m very good at escaping situations <3 pure of voice

if you care for it you can close nearly a 2000 range distance in 2 seconds… add the 1200 range knockdown and the immobilize signets – clipping/targeting range is the limit.

Mathematically, a condition build guardian doesn’t touch a burst guardian in terms of damage. Its not even close.

true but it is also the complete opposite intend. yet guardian burst damage is not that superb that it will knock somebody of their. against a skilled opponent you won’t kill them with a burst build. ^^ we ar not warriors or thiefs.

really most build comparison is just paper gw2. i ran the numbers on burn effectiveness and have loads of data on it.

dps advantage berserker vs. carrion on a dps oriented build is around 16% assuming 100% uptime on burn. seems alot yet dps is just a statistical optimized number. direct damage is decreased by a lot of factors especially for guardians.

if the target dodges or simply gets out of reach you dps drops. protection on target hits you with a 33% dps loss.

burn on your target however stays the same and i argue that most opponents will not remove it actively when facing a guardian. simply because they do not expect it to hit hard and because they do not want to waste a condition remover on a 1 second condition.

on a condition damage heavy build GS-5+burn hits for more then 1000 damage per second on top of you normal attacks toss in sigil of geomancy for another 300 and it gets intresting really fast. especially in spvp.

i use a burn build for four weeks now and i find it it extremly rewarding in solo pve, spvp and wvwvw and i have direc comparison to my 2nd lvl 80 guardian in zerker gear.

Most op? Weakest? WvW+spvp.

Easy answer imo, gs has a lower skillcap to do well with. 4 out of five skills needs some sort of planning to execute on hammer. and they also do two very different things.

Guardian can do really nice dps and even brust damage – but you sacrafice a lot.

i would say that 30 valor just makes it a lot easier in any situation – regardless of AH or meditation heals. anything else that provide good surviveability is too stationary for WvW

I would approve if it becomes like a tower shield and counts as a 2hand weapon (hello 2hand mastery)
all skins could stay the same the shield would just get 50% larger and you would get 5 unique skills.

1- shield bash, boom, bang +confusion
2- Bunker block all attacks for 3 seconds – knock back blocked melee attackers
3- Split the crowd – charge in a line knocking sideways all foes along the way
4- shattering arc – shield roundhouse
5- Human shield – block all attacks and reflect all projectile from the front

that is pretty much up to you.
if you follow viralseed then put energy in or another sigil of life(2stacks per kill) until you reach 25 stacks.. you can then swap both weapons for ones with other sigils. like energy and maybe something that grants a buff/health on kill or simply sigil of force – seeing you would invest in unsceathed contender – which is only good for ranged combat really. sigil of resotration is not effected by healing power but you will get a heal for every enemy killed even if you hit them only once – its pretty strong in dungeon content when you fight multiples.

two weapons have always the advantage of two sigil slots each.

yet greatsword is a really good weapon for dps, gap closing/blind and a little control as well – probably the best weapon-skill-set ingame imo because the skills are not really situational excep for binding blade which is also great for dps if you do not need the pull.

so its a tough call – for everyone.
Is spent a couple of gold and still havnt found what i am most comfortable with. So i carry a lot of weapons with equal stats but diffrent sigils. I also choose the weaponskin accodingly to the sigil just to keep track.

First of all I do not care about optimizing dps. i care about the generalisation that a guardian build that focuses on burn is total crap, sucks not viable and so on.

i am only going into calcualtions because no one else does. i even compare carrion to berserker which has three offensive stats where carrion only has two – I would always expect berserkl to deal more damage.

I have two lvl 80 guardians one is heavy carrion and the other full berserker. I know its viable from direct game experience. solo pve and spvp.

I use what people throw at me. i used wintermutes thread because he said my calculation is off and i have to compare actual ingame dps. now you do the same so look into yours. (i cant download the spreadsheet though – is there some trick to it? and if not can you post a link to one with carrion gear?)


i am not on the same page where my burns get diluted by others. If i have the higher CD then theirs going down the drain but thats an entirely diffrent argument.

sigil of blood is a pretty unreasonable suggestion on you own. I can get the 25 stacks and just switch – because after the 25 stacks the sigil is useless. all i am saying is that in a condition damage heavy build geomancy delivers more dps then sigil of force.

well i seem to recall some pretty moody mesmer who was angry that he wasted twilight on mesmer for three reasons:

1. animations: you dont swing it. one throw and after that its autoattack
2. enemys can see you leaking in stealth
3. clones do not leak

Burning is stronger than 6-7 stacks of Bleed depending on the amount of Condition Damage your character has.

no… because bleeding is also increased by CD. so it will stay pretty much at the same ratio until 1400 CD at which point 6 stacks of bleed become even stronger

The problem is that Bleed can be easily applied by most classes to the point where it passes Burning or completely destroys it. On the other hand, Burning is a single condition that constantly applies additional duration rather than more damage, so one condition removal would affect Burning much less than Bleed.

well put. although i wouldnt see burn and bleed in a competition. both really are a group effort to maintain. a constant burn on a boss mob is actually harder to achieve then 15+ stacks of bleed. because most classes that could burn constantly spec diffrently and/or are not common (engineer).

Burning feels more of a secondary means for the Guardian to deal damage rather than something to invest in. With 10 in Zeal and 25 in Radiance, however, you can deal +20% damage to any target that is Burning making it a viable condition to focus on solely for application, not damage. That more or less may be what the developers are talking about as they mention having specs or traits for “heavy burning damage.”

you can boost burn damage to be about 30% of your dps if you focus on maintaining it while still beeing able to get the 20% damage boost. I did a calculation in the other burn hate thread and it leaves you short 6,6% damage(sporting sigil of geomancy) in terms of dps compared to full zerker gear but with 20% more HP.

i run a condition damage burn build and it works very well.

leave supreme justice at 4 hits but make the activation burn the area around you as well.

i see potential in the trait like searing flame. removing a boon every 20 secs is just too long of a cool down to use it effetively. Reduce that to 3 seconds for each target individually and it could open up a lot of new builds. but maybe there are other ideas of effects that trigger when you apply burning like pbao 1 sec fury

oh, and the ticks from binding blade deal condition damage so maybe they factored that in as well – its not on the same multiplier as burn though

Those calculations were done for fulll berserker’s and and optimal dps builds, a pure pve farming build might want a little more utility and defense in traits, if you are so inclined, but they are certainly a lot closer to what a power build can achieve under realistic circumstances.

just realized that the calculation in the thread posted have another flaw. Damage over time portion of binding blade (46,7 dps) are factored in for damage multipliers and crit chance/damage which do not effect them. This will favor condition builds too but we can neglect that. it simply shows that calculations are overall difficult and still show optimized numbers which will realistically never happen.

since you are on solo pve

- On a power build a dodge roll is a bigger dps sink
- Protection on the target is a 33% dps sink
- Knockdowns, Stuns, dazes are dps sinks

all these fators are compensated a lot better on a burn build.

a power build can effectively damage less targets then a burn centered build which will use at least shattered aegis and the trait JI and maybe purging flames. these can easily achieve obtenas 7secs+ pbaoe burn if you add then sigil of geomancy, binding blade dps increase you have a lot of 360 degrees damage where a power build can only rely on a higher damage of WW to compensate.

Full Condition Damage Gear

So calculation done.

First of all I could no recreate the logic behind WW damage calculation. several tests in the mists showed me that WW is not reliable. i had occasions where only 8 hits where applied even standing inside the puppet and one hit of the projectiles on a diffrent puppet. I never got more then 10 hits. then again the comabt log is just plain awful. because of that I redid the numbers according to the tooltip. In addition i couldn’t figure out how the damage was approx. anyways. :p. I think it won’t matter in the big picture.

Second of all the damage multiplier is done wrong in the thread shown. One has to do the +x% damage multipliers first and then the increase through crit damage/chance – just a minor flaw.

Third of all Binding Blade ticks are increased by conditon damage. power has no effect at all. conversion seems to be a little less then 0,2. base without any CD is 160.

without further ado:


Build: 20/30/20/0/0
berserk amulet, divinity runes

Auto: 677 + 677 + 1016 = 2370 total, 2370/2.5 = 948/s
WW = 2853 total, 2853/2.5 = 1141,2/s – 948 = 193,2 / 12.5 = 15,456/s
Symbol = 2330 total, 2330 – 948 = 1382 net, 1382 / 21 = 65.8/s
Bind = 847 + 2390 = 3237 total, 3237 – 948 = 2289 net, 2289 / 31 = 73.8/s

DPS = 1103.06 Base
Total Multiplier = x 1.1 × 1.1 × 1.05x1.01 = 1,283
1415,45 x [1 + (0.55 × 1.02)] = 2209,52
2209,52 + 328 + 77,5 = 2615,02 total dps

Auto: 587 + 587 + 881 = 2055 total, 2055/2.5 = 822/s

note: 312,45 is the damage from 3 bleed stacks i was generous and gave me 100% uptime and did not factor in the direct damage from the sigil

so … full zerker stats vs. carrion gives a “only” 6,6 % damage increase.

I think doing other stat combos is not necessary. they will be outdamaged with ease.

If you with me on the calculation? If yes we can talk about usefulness in general and set aside the dps argument. because to me this is a viable result. it also means that with binding blade i can apply a total of 1373 damage over time on 5 targets around me which mitght be abel to give a condition build the upper hand in a 1 vs 5 situation.

my calculations are only auto attack damage without any traits and stat points from builds for good reason. i do not want to have a discussion about the right build in terms of the dps comparison. if i took that into account i would argue that your non burn build does not have 100% burn uptime because you do not focus on it and then what? do i give you 50% uptime? 30%. That wouldnt make sense. i really only tried to simplify it(probably too much) and work up from there – didnt think I would have to this fast. :-)

my berserker autoattack dps: 806,49
since in your thread the pvp amulet is used for calculation + 50 power from zeal the diffrence is understandable. note that he assuems 100% uptime on burn to utelize 10% fiery wrath.

i still would always compare it on the exact same build – otherwise we are getting nowhere.

your link takes it a step further and i will redo the calculations when i get home based on this thread. (base damage)

it still does not matter what empowering might and AH does for surviveabilty. you can spec these things on burn build as well. mine has 30 valor so 30% crit damge is what i get too. i agree with you that a guardian can pretty much negate all defensive by simply using blocks, dodges and blinds. that only works as long as you only take on 1-3 opponents.

so lets leave it on dps comparison for the moment.

find below a simple dps comparison (maybe too simple, point out some flaws if you find them. I am not sure if i got all stat right but if i didnt i screwed them up equally) regardless of build/traits.

As far as all those +% on damage tools you mentioned (wintermute). They are benefitting a power focused build more.. but thats it! a burn build can take all those traits too and will compensate. And if you look at optenas sig – this build utelizes all of them. Also I think we can all agree that any burn build will have crit chance and crit damage simply through radiance and valor which are essential. please also consider that knockdown, protection & blind will decrease your “power dps” greatly while it completely leaves brun damage untouched. lots of ifs and buts that will make a comparison even more difficult so i leave them out for now.

sigils:
you have valid points on this too. but i can counter: consider this: 5% more damage sigil vs. geomancy. in a conditon heavy build this will ramp up your dps by 240+ thats close to 20% damage increase and its pbaoe on top of that.

the comparison gives both builds the credit to apply burning constantly which, as you pointed out, is not that easy as many people make it to be if you do not trait a little for it – given that GS auto attack only procs 14,4 times a minute with passive VoJ. even sword alone can not keep a target on constant burn.

Greatsword – damage per chain on a 2600 toughness target – base stat

916*1047.5*(0.8+0.8+1.2)/2600 = 1033.32

Greatsword – damage per chain – carrion power/CD stats

1486*1047.5*(0.8+0.8+1.2)/2600 = 1676.32 (total swing chain)
1676,32*74/(60*3) = 689,15

condition damage: 534 per second

689,15 + 534 = 1222,9


Greatsword – damage per chain – knights power stat (with emeralds)

1411*1047.5*(0.8+0.8+1.2)/2600 = 1.591,72
1.591,72*74/(60*3) = 654,37

crit damage dps increase
654,37* (((0.50 + 1/100) * (27,29/100)) + 1) = 745,44

condition damage: 0
burn damage: 328 per second

745,44 + 328 = 1.073,44

carrion over knights
dps increase assuming 100% uptime on burn: 12%
trade off damage reduction: -21%
effective hp: 4497 hp – *24%*

in the same matter i did soldiers and berserker. i provide calculation if needed.


carrion over berserker
dps decrease assuming 100% uptime on burn: 12%
trade off damage reduction: nothing
trade off effective hp: -4497 hp > *- 24%*

note that the damage increase should be expected with 3 offensive stats


carrion over soldiers
dps increase assuming 100% uptime on burn: 8%
trade off damage reduction: -16%
vitality: nothing


again: i am not stating that a condition damage build on a guardian is OP. i am not denying that the problem of multiple burn sources is a problem. (imo a very small one really)

i just try to contradict the (imo) false statements that burn ist “total crap”, and CD is not viable in any situation.

i wouldn’t invest so much time in this thread if i wasnt very confident about the result of a condition damage based build.

by the way you can get to 650 burn damage but its not easy and you can always argue that you can boost power in the same matter.

investing in condition damage simply spreads you dps output in to two more equal parts. yes it can be removed but direct damage can be mitigated.

@deathpanel: calling out people to spread wrong information requires proof. i gave proof for my argument (and i guess obtena is more or less with me). i like to see yours now.

p.s.: btw – my burns are pbaoe. by the time the pbaoe damage runs out all mobs are dead. so it does not excel on one target. i might do a video to show the effect maybe that more helpful then more trash talk.

Yes… For the Same reason why soldiers is better then knights gear in terms of dps when you have Low crit damage. The Resultat counts
