Dragon Hunter, not worth taking?

in Guardian

Asmodal.6489

I felt to give some counter arguments to this post. however I do agree that overall DH is only worth taking if you want to go with LB and if you going heavy support with a twist.
I think this is because lets face it: being able to get three full trait lines as a guard was and is everybodies dream. Honor/virtures/valor will be a extremely hard to crack setup either with shouts or meditations.

  • Defenders Dogma: Getting a free ‘5th attack’ proc on Virtue of Justice after a block is too niche, and while it may happen in PvE encounters, it won’t happen often and the result of it proccing will be underwhelming.

I think you underestimate what it potentially does. First you will open every fight with a burn attack as soon as your aegis gets removed. Depending on how much damage fire stacks wil cause this will be a huge boost especially combined with Amplified Wrath.

  • Piercing Light: This feels like a trait thrown together to appeal to condi builds and to make it seem like traps weren’t shoehorned into the guardian class.

I disagree because basically the whole trait revamp folows the same mechanic. Sigils meditations, shouts all the stuff that boosts a specific type of utility are gethered in one trait (in general the grandmaster). the only reason Piercing Light seems lacking is that it only adds one kind of boost but because of that its an adept trait. If it had more like CD reduction and faster deployment or whatever it had to be a GM trait.

  • Hunter’s Determination: I am truly struggling to work out how a brief bit of stability on a ranged weapon skill is useful.. Even assuming you’re in the fray, and that CC is being thrown your way, it comes after a cast-time skill.. which could be interrupted. I don’t like this trait at all, maybe put 2 seconds of stab on cast, and 1 extra per target hit? Though that’s potentially too powerful.

this does make more sense since 3 stacks of s2 stab wouldnt be all that helpful. We have good access to stab already which makes this trait in its current form not worth taking considering the options are far better.

  • Dulled Senses: This trait feels like it was implemented purely to synergise with the bad GM trait that knocks back.. as is the guard has minimal knockbacks, certainly not worth traiting for.

this is not true. we have quite a few knockbacks IF line of warding, ring of warding, sanctury counts twords it. Shield 5 is a great knockback as well and this trait also makes protective reviver even better since it adds to securing a rez.

  • Hunter’s Fortification: 4 seconds of protection in a TINY radius on virtues.. and it’s a GM trait? This is god awful protection up time tied to important CD’s, it’s only going to trigger passively, nobody would ever pop a virtue for this. Maybe virtue of justice spam on trash mobs would have some nice synergy, but it’s so niche, and requires 2 trait lines.. not even worth humouring. If you want prot uptime, take a hammer, not a GM.

Again this is potentially a awsome trait. Combine it with inspired virtues and indomitable courage your are looking at a 8sec protection, instant pbaoe stab, stun break. and you can reload it while being immune for another time. while blocking all attacks for your whole group in a front arc. I dare this is the strongest defensive combo in the game if abything it might be redundant in itself since one could argue who neets protection behin a guardian with VoC active.

  • Heavy Light: Tiny knockback with a sizeable ICD that only applies to ONE weapon.. No thanks. What’s more it’s not even controllable, it could proc at a stupid time that serves you little to no benefit, passive rubbish at its finest.

Yes and no. even if the knockback is small if combined with cripple it leaves enough room to get off another control skill. with a shorter cd this could mean an easy lock down of your opponent.

Chrono vs DHunter: Who gained the most?

All in all chronomancer seems stronger because what they got is less dependent on your overall build.

The DH and Guardian changes overall tackle some important issues. We wil be able to pull of a sort of “soft lock down”. It looks like we will be the kings of none damaging conditions (with the exception of fire of course) which will aid us in bringing in massiv damage.

My biggest fear is that we will desperately need it. Beacause the main issues with guardian still exist which are the lack of “unconditional condi cleanse options” and swiftness sources. Both issues will remain to drive us into certain traitlines or rune sets for competitive game modes.

For casual gameplay I think we are going to have a blast.

I fear we will get eaten alive. Condi cleanse will be a Problem on trap guard. If there ever will be such a Thing. (Full traps) .Heal Trap should get a condi cleanse. None of our weapons have a reliable form of condi cleanse so we have to cover this by Utilities or virtues (Long CD). And at the end of the Day we still have a swiftness issue that either Forces us into the Same Old rune sets or locks another utility.

Gaining stealth is not worth taking traps AND this rune set over utilities and runes that will actually be useful.

In addtion to that, let’s add in the SEVERE lack in mobility now w/ a Bow + not Traveller/Speed Runes… or Hoelbrok… or Scholar… or or or any baseline speed.

I guess we can just use Staff + Bow + Traps… gg

wtf – get rid of this Trapper/Bow Guardian.

We’re getting cripple and another gapcloser. I think thats pretty good bth

its not even a cap closer. it is far better. Ground targeted means we might be getting a serious tool to disengage. people really need to wait for the whole picture. DH, traps (stealth) and trait changes could make us kiting kings.

our mobility is by no means lacking severely. yes swiftness is a problem but there is more to it.

Going off topic from your own topic in one post. well played OP.

honestly I think you want shelter to be a shout and thats why you classify it as one. :-) Healing breeze is already emitting from our mouth therefor its pretty obvious that it well become the shout.

shelter fits consecration like nothing else. Combine it with the trait would be OP though. 20% off CD and a longer duration for more procs of might and burn: yes plz!
a shout that blocks seems too far fetched.

The tomes need to be the same class simply to have the same mechanic. spirit weapon could feelt right however the corresponding trait does not. however they can just add to the description and it would be fine I guess

I am confident to say that we have an extremely good burst while maintaining enough defensive measures left to leave us with some wiggle room if stuffs goes wrong.

mobility is the key issue. I do not think it is even the application of damage that is problematic it is the withdrawl from a fight. We simply can not do it to catch a breath and let CDs come up again. however if we could do that we would become very powerful very quickly.

I feel that Guardian is a lot about reading the enemy. we can very easily break or avoid rotations.

For anything x-x-x-6-6

SYG>Retreat>HtL>SY

Aegis heal is underrated and pair it with UC. If your facing a heavy condition team swiftness, stability, and strafe running will help more than SY. The lesser cds means higher sustain condition removal and more buffs. Really good amazing long buffs not like SYs short ones.

For anything x-x-6-x-6

SYG>HtL>SY maybe equal to Retreat

for other specs it could change.

Since i only run x-x-x-6-6 and after several more rounds I agree. Didn’t miss SY at all. Pure of Heart is a great trait. Yet I always seem to regret taking it over Resolute Healer despite its long CD. But this might be because its effect is more obvious then PoH (which tends to fail a lot against better opponents who know how to secure a stomp). Might be better to prevent the downstate in the first place.

I am also torn between two-hand Mastery. Simply because you can not have enough banish and ring of warding. Simply doesnt offer anything to the group though.

I am on guard with hammer and he is a staff ele so it is a big advantage to call out waterfields. Even if I only blast once everyone else cant miss the visual cue that now is the time.

his oh kitten, kitten, kitten is also a good pointer.

I agree however that it is not needed for basic movements. But it is very important for infight calls and calling him back to help me with a 1v2. I can tell him before the enemy arrives on point and shows up on the mini map.

banish is already very stong imo if I could land it all the time I would do a lot better. I have the feeling however that if the enemy is standing inside you that banish does not hit reliably.

I play virtue bunker so hammer#5 is to keep stuff out and rarely to keep it trapped.

what I often do is #4,#3,#5. knock them off point and keep the there for a while. I try to place the ring so it sits on the rim of the point. I have the feeling that sometimes people do not see it very well especially if you are on blue team or if the point is white. (or maybe they are just newbs). If they run in its valuable seconds to cap the point.

When are you ever alone on a point as a bunker guardian downing someone? Bunker Guardian is the worst combo in the world for killing anything. SYG is the whole basis for the bunker guardian in spvp. If it didn’t exist no one would want a bunker guardian. Also, its not just stomps SYG secures but rezzes and it’s just not you it can secure those things for but team-mates can do them because they will have stability from it as well. It is the only AoE stability in the game. It also has a sooper short cooldown so you really can’t waste it to easily. Lots of classes can cure conditions. The current meta is full of class that just kitten on conditions. I don’t need to pull conditions from most elementalists for example or even Warriors and Engineers for that matter. I am not saying SY is not potentially very powerful but there can be only one best ability and that’s SYG.

First, I am alone on point all the time and even as a bunker guardian i get to stomp a single target quite often. Basically when a teammate downs it and leaves it to rot behause they are moving to another Point. I mostly wait till he/she dies on its on to keep it from respawn but if I can See enemies closing in I go for the stomp. Others situations are two downed or soon to be downed enemies. All i am saying is to be smart about the use.

I could have respected your opinion short of you saying that SYG is not
potentially powerful. Really? SYG literally does everything except stability and is another stun break. taking retreat over it is a hard choice. However I do change my opinion Based on what you wrote. I do swap between SY and retreat but would Never Run without SYG. Hence it is more important to me.

Oh and SYG is not the only aoe stability in game. there are three more. Hint: we have another one.

Using shouts

in Guardian

Posted by: Asmodal.6489

Asmodal.6489

The only one shout that you need to be aware of at all time is Stand your ground. That’s your most powerful shout, since stomping is one of the most important thing you can do.

A team that can stomp vs a team that can’t will make all the difference.

I disagree.
The most powerful shout is SY if you are taking your support role seriously. and since it has the longest cooldown its is the one you need to watch the most and pick its moment very carefully because this can turn a fight around as well.

yes, SYG is important for stomps but only if you attempt to stomp with other players around that can interrupt you. dont waste it on an easy stomp or on classes that can interrupt you from downstate once. you should rather dodge that or use a blind.

so the one that is the least important is HTL especially if you are alone on the point.

more importantly: dont be selfish. if someone else is attempting a stomp who has limited sources of stability give it to them. the mastering begins when you are aware of who is around you and what position he is at in the group panel. you should take time at the beginning of the match to check name, class, race and appearance. often enough you might want to cleanse condis on your group even though you might have none. If your dps buddies fall its a matter of time when you go down as well.

If you are fighting on point and got cripple and a few bleeds on you do not rush to cleanse that. keep your cool an wait for the nasty stuff that will hurt you (confusion in large quantities, burn and 7+ bleedstacks.

if you are fighting a medi guard think twice if you jump at the burn cleanse. it will come back imediately.

watch out for you heal CD and all shout CDs . you might want to wait just before you cast the heal to take care of incoming poison. Even though shelter is not much of a heal – with poison on its really only the block left and that hurts a lot.

if you are charging mid, try to get a fast understanding what classes are coming at you and anticipate their first move. opening with SYG when entering the point with the enemy is mostly a good call since it will be off CD when the first is downed. if it is still on CD well… you might have the upper hand anyways because lets face it your team did a good job at focusing or the enemy is squishy as hell.

this is just my two cents. I am not a hardcore pvp player andjust got recently into it. those are just my observations.

I do play virtue bunker as well but with hammer / mace/focus.
against heavy condi teams I take SY over retreat. if I do pick retreat i use pure of heart instead of resolute healer. you will not miss SY especially if you have boon heavy teammates.

Radiant Retaliation still 100% broken.

in Guardian

Posted by: Asmodal.6489

Asmodal.6489

Radiant Retaliation: Retaliation damage scales from condition damage instead of power. Retaliation damages any enemy with an active condition on you.

okay so if the formular 198 + (0.15 * Condition Damage) would actually work
and we assume 1500 condi damage, we are talking about 423 retal damage per second per condition. so 7 condis from one necro (signet of spite) would deal 2.961 dps unavoidable damage over 10 seconds. in addition to any other hits he lands.

Could be either intersting. In Combo with SYS and the guards other abilities this could turn out pretty gamebreaking for some opposing builds to an extend far beyond frustration. maybe build in a range of 900.

Ice Spike Needs to be a blast Finisher

in Elementalist

Posted by: Asmodal.6489

Asmodal.6489

I fell like you did not think this all the way through

blast finisher in water would be OP as hell. I feel that staff really shines in spvp in “bunker” builds already.

with a blast finisher people would just sit in water tanking.

tried out a 00644 build with diamond skin and clerics yesterday. sitting in water would roughly give you 2k heals per second if you keep autoattacking. adding spike heals from geyser and additional waterfield blasts would be just dumb.

just imagine: with healing rain on a 36cd (if traited) you could do 7 blasts until its back up again. Add in arcane wave and you got 8 while regenerating through soothing mists, reg and signet while sitting on 3k armor.

add the water elemental (which will not die as well due to aoe healing) and you got yourself the no.1 troll build.

Sword/Torch

in Guardian

Posted by: Asmodal.6489

Asmodal.6489

a lot of ifs and buts…

torch cleanses condis on other players which a lot of people seem to overlook. so damage is bad but effect can be pretty good same as focus #4 without the unpredictable bounces

focus #5 does damage IF it is not destroyed which can be a pretty big if in any situation. yes it is pbaoe but with the long cooldow you can dish out 3 flame in the same time and if well timed 18secs of burn. if you trait it even more and i would say it is a more reliable burst because you can acutally plan for it.

so dps wise torch should be ahead of focus single target wise. Considering that 9 secs are also pbaoe burns on three targets it might be true overall (reall didnt check all the math). Of course one can argue that you could cover that burn from other sources. Yet focus brings more utility and surviveability.

I think some of you should start realizing the concept, that through the specialisation a guardian is not a guardian anymore and therefor can and probably will be something else.

whats already happening is that most of you think that this is a huge buff to guardian or any class for that matter. which it will be not. it is supposed to create diversity and that does not mean it will create a stronger dps build which basically is all most of you are looking for.

If you do not like that you do not have to play. If you think the new additions whatever they will be are garbage dont use them.

with no doubt some of the playerbase will feel shafted when their calls specialisation sucks compared to others. Gurdians might be among them or not.

I really do not care what it is as long as it is cool in terms of animation and effect. meaning it has to bring something to the table that makes me want to use it and other jealous.

it would als be nice if the new specialisation would add a new virtue causing all burn procs to also cause a 5 sec bleed for a duration of 10 secs or so.

this would turn toch and scepter in into single target condi weapons due to the multiple hit skills. permeating wrath gets a really good reason to use it making the bleeds aoe and to combo it up with supreme justice … probably OP in WvWvW but we can dream.

Maybe you already you knew this. Regardless, I wanted to point this out, specially with the new buffs to torch(whether or not they helped is Debatable).

#1. Cleansing Flame IS a 600 range attack however if you use it in melee then it will auto track if you stop moving. ie they run in a circle around you and you will spin, keeping them in front of you

  1. Zealots Flame can be used during the channel of Cleansing Flame. I try to pop it about Halfway through the channel. Then, if they stay melee I can just leave it on until it expires but if they disengage then I can throw it at them after the channel of Cleansing Flame. Very Good Burst, and somewhat trolling if they start to wonder why #5 is doing that Burning!

#bluefireOP

Cheers All!

you should always throw it …

I am playing medi Hammer/scepter torch at the moment and it is so much fun.

mighty blow > banish > zealots embrace > swap > zealots fire > chains > smite
or rewerse:
chains > smite > zealots fire > swap > Mighty Blow > ji > banish > zealots embrace

is just an epic combo to execute and to watch – really dynamic.

I do also think that the torch skills hint the specialisation we are going to get in HoT.

If they do give us a bow, it’ll be a short bow that has a similiar skill set as our Spirit Bow. Just like our off hand shield and spirit shield…

  1. AA faster than the scepter, half the damage. 900 range
  2. Barrage location with arrows, healing the area. 5s duration. Channeling: 3s 1200 range. 30s cd
  3. (3x) cleansing arrow that cures 3 conditions on yourself and allies. 40s cd
  4. Instantly pull targets towards you with a grasping arrow. 15s
  5. (Ward) Shoot a slow arcing, blue flamed arrow. Foes struck burn. Allies struck gain 2s regen. Arrow falls to the ground making blue flames in a 120 radius for 2s. Foes caught are burned. Allies inside gain regen 2s.

sorry, that sounds extremely dull.

I question of bows : I would love LB but you ar right SB is more realistic because LB would compete with scepter for long range weapon. yet “lore wise” a shortbow on a heavy armored class seems not right.

Spear could fill the close range weapon gap as well but I dislike the idea of a AA throwing spears… where do they come from and where do they go? the undewater spear of light thing does not convince me either

What i would find intersting if the spear had inflict a long melee range. lets say 180 on AA (Gs has 130, 180 is the radius on untraited symbols as well). Combo that up with sweep skills that cripple and the weapon could be used to keep just enough distance to fend of melees. would take some skill to master it and force the opponent into ranged.

heck the underwater skills are not that bad (damage needs to be way higher though)

I find it hard to imagine dual pistol or rifle but could see myself loving that too.

Overall it makes a lot of sense that spears will be introduced as land weapons. They have models for all of those and some are really really cool.

neat ideas although they remind me to much of others (with the exception of sweep could be cool).. i am seeing the animation already and i think they are a little dull. They are basically GS/ S or Mace “like”.

If there will be something like this I want a cooler skill that makes people want to play a certain class just because of this skill.

Impale // 35sec CD
Impale your foe, lift them above you head and slam them to the ground behind your back and inflicht bleeding and cripple.

lift* (bascially a knock “forward”) 350
5 stack of bleeding (5s)
damage: really OP
Blast finisher

  • new combat effect, probably needs to be restricted. larger enemies have to be immune against it since I highly dobt that it would look in place if an asura “lifts” an cs abomnations over its head…

also I think you are limiting your ideas to melee combat moves. hammer and gs have spirit shackles for example. I think a new guardian weapon should explore a bit more of this area even if its only to mix up combat styles.

Funny.

yet the biggest issue for guardians is to stick to a target and keeping dps focus.

If you know what is coming a medi dps guard becomes a one trick pony. Especially it comes with some weaknesses.

of course you can count the dodges… yet any class can squeez out one or two more depending on spec.

If you have a hard time against a dps guard you might want to look at the things that it does not bring to the table. I am sure it will scream in your face what to do if you check any of the guard dps builds.

Does dps-only pve limit gear, trait, or both?

in Guardian

basically you want to slot absolute resolution trait and wall of reflection and you will be set for most support roles except those where no reflection is needed.

other than that you can play what you like. people argue that this “should” translate to dps because everything else has a to marginal effect in a pve group and you are better off avoiding all damage to begin with instead of healing it or soaking it up.

Main argument of dps promoters: Going dps is basically beneficial for all as long as everyone does the same. full dps only works when the whole group is set up this way. Dead enmies do not cause dangerous situations or power attacks that you can not survive or heal off anyways.

As long as you pack zerker and some damage multipliers you can not do a lot of wrong as a guard. Except when you die because of it … thats always bad.

Heal Skills

I see your point but I am afraid looking only at our heal skills and trying to compare them to other classes options will get you nowhere.

Since we have a low healthpool I rarely have the feeling that any does not perform well.

shelter is special it really is half utility half heal skill. you mentioned the benefits
does it need a little kick… maybe. But how much are we talking about? 1.000hp ? better scaling? Its worth a lot if your opponent knows that you can counter his go to burst attack.

Signet is the no.1 enemy frustration skill. they think they got you … and you back at 95%. It already tends to overheal quite often.

Even our medi heal can be used quite effectively – if it would be instant as all medis are intended I am sure it would see some playtime.

short answer:
Do you think our go to heal ability hinders our class performance?
- no

Is an unrealized reason why we may not have the same amount of sustain in dps roles as other classes do?
- i do not see any connection here.

Why condi guard supercedes med zerks.

I would also add the often overlooked damage over time from binding blade which scales well with codi damage (I think around 0.2) which can not be cleansed. With this build you can sidestep the low engaging potential of a guardian. sticking to an enemy to burst him down is quite hard if you fail to set it up right which is even harder and you need to read the game very carefully.

I would love this to be a viable option but I did my fair share of condi guard – i love it – but there are too many counters to it while being absolutely vurnable to conditions yourself. A good opponent will not be fooled twice and pretty much ignore you, time the cleanses right and stay away from you while keeping the point.

so I imagine its really a point defense build but I sure like to be proven wrong.

I would be happy if they swapped shield and focus 5 skills. Focus would make so much sense in combo with scepter like Indure said.

New GMT: Hell Fire - Viable Condi Guard?

in Guardian

Posted by: Asmodal.6489

Asmodal.6489

New grand master trait, replaces kindeled zeal.

Hell Fire:
Apply one stack of bleed, torment and confusion for 8s when you burn a foe.

We need an option like this. I honestly think it could be that easy to open up a complete new range of Condition builds for guardians.

we all know it is not about the amount of condi damage stat we can aquire to make burning alone viable.

this mastertrait would instantly make a guardian a condi guard without influenceing existing builds. It is a role definig trait that can go well with multiple directions.

you can go for burning spirit weapons, burn on block and so on.
core condi build would feature permeating wrath and supreme justice would finally have a purpose.

what do you guys think?

mastertrait: hellfire – 1 stack of 8s bleed, torment, confusion on every burn stack application. no CD.

Is there a point in having Kindled Zeal?

in Guardian

Asmodal.6489

just give us one a master trait which applies one stack of 8sec bleed, torment and confusion on every stack of burn we apply and call it hell fire.

this would make a combo with supreme justive and permeating wrath worthwhile.

more condition damage just does not cut it.

and in before: more than one stack of each would be overpowered

would full nomad guard be useful in dungeons?

Asmodal.6489

the only istance I could see it usefull would be WvWvW as well and even then only in a very tight nieche.

I made a two builds one for warrior one for guard which focus on surviving …everything.

main role is rezzing people from downstate which is quite fun on warrior with 30% more speed, rousing resilliance and last stand.

as for guardian same thing applies – and you are a bit of walking hp-buffer.

but thats it.

so if you like wvwvw for what it is and do not care about bags and be that guy that draws 5 people wacking at him and surviving it till you friends pick them on one by one this set could be for you.

to answer your question: I do not

Currently I am playing a “phoenix build” which I came up with goofing around. Its basically a staff glass cannon 30/10/0/0/30. It utilizes lava font when downed, arcane brilliance and elemental surge.

In downed state I deal damage for 10 secs while not taking any for 3 in a large area (longer fire fields and larger staff AoE). my targets are constantly burning and when i get up(and i always do) and something is still alive > arcane brilliance, staff fire 4 … and then do what you want.

due to a lot of modifiers you get quite good damage when downed- at least enough to kill anything that is left from your inital attack.

+ 10% for fire attunement
+ 5% from weapon
+ 5% from runes
+ 10% against burni targets
+ 33% because of trait (should be 50 like necro and thief)
+ 20% from food (which also doubles your donwed health)
+ 20% against low health targets

Skills are arcane wave, acane shield, purging flames/signet of air.

this build really got me back into my ele.
only drawback is the lack of good condi cleanse but we are talking about solo pve here anyway.

the build really takes off against 2+ mobs – and its great for farming

PVE build

Asmodal.6489

it really depends what pve content you are doing Dungeons or Open World. Open World the bleed Hammer combo should work. In any Case here is my current Build which i just Love:

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fIAQNBhYDbk0J5NGy3hJOggUohVxRBUwEpHlBbQGA-jUDBYfRGVEg+LQEEw5ogpqQJSDZtMMIVXRr8Ks6FYKXCp6XRWKATEGB-w

It is a boon warrior. Some pros

100% fury
100% swiftness
100 % vigor
50% stability (swap dogged march for sure foot)
15 – 25 might stacks
90% crit Chance
50% crit damage
Over 4k attack when loaded up
Best mobility in Game

Probably more condi removal the needed

You can also mix a lot. Hard fights You swap for banner Elite and or disciplin and get 100% regen uptime.

I found sigil of luck extremely fun. Has no cooldown and you have a good Chance on Protection, aegis and retal.

In before: i know i loose a Lot of damage like this, but i like it. You can go more dps and do 0/25/0/30/15 but this doesnt Feel as flexible to me.

… And the back trinket has a platinum doubloon in it.

Otter then that … Check the youtube vid. But since you die a Lot you might want to Play it safer
