Danger - may contain overleveled skritt

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Avan.1540

Yeah, basically what the title states. Some of the presents have skritt way over the area level, but it seems to be consistently tied to the one present spawn – its not random.

Also, for the record, even if you are level 80 and fully exotic geared, level 31 skritt in a level 11 zone (this was in ashford, near the prior heart NW of AC) will flatten you very easily. I found this out. For science. And Anet successfully removed 3 silver from the economy. >.>

I heard reports of a level 69 skritt present in ashford, but could not confirm its location at this time.

While its really nice to finally have this in the game… it… doesn’t exactly work that well

Couple things:
1) Several zones such as plains of ashford and Wayfarer foothills don’t give me a popup
2) Several zones give me a different zone’s popup (ie, Black Citadel shows Hoelbrak’s completion)

I have yet to go and catalog every single zone’s correctness or lackthereof, but just putting it out there that I immediately noticed this problem.

^ that

[Also, Anet has stated that canonically Charr metal working is the highest, exceeding even that of the dwarves]

Also note that the Charr have come a long way technologically in such a short time – whereas the Asura have actually regressed in some areas (Asura tech from over two centuries ago surprised even a modern Asura; go to metrica & do the gate repair event). However, this actually can be seen as pointing to flaws in Asura social structure (ie, the crippling competition that exists between Krewes).

Still, the Charr are by and large real engineers – even if they may not posses the raw computational intellect the Asura seem to have, they do have boatloads more common sense. Only a handful really get into the ‘FOR SCIENCE!’ zone like the majority of Asura do (such as the cattlepult inventor, though thats really more of a hobby project IIRC, and the worst it does is anger harpies when a cow falls in their nests, whereas when a critical bit of Asura infrastructure failed, it ripped a hole in reality.).

Also re: magic usage – the Charr have a social aversion to it, specifically it arose ever since the shaman leaders were overthrown. Just look at the flame legion who still embrace the use of magic. The Charr DO have a lot of magical potential, they really do just choose not to use it.

While it may be hard to determine raw intelligence (especially because there can be so very many different metrics, and its hard to say that you can have even a single metric), when it comes to common sense – the Charr top the charts.

The Asura have way too much FOR SCIENCE! In fact, I’ve even seen one yell that.
The Sylvari are currently too naive and young to really know any better.
The Skritt can surpass the Asura if you get enough of them in one scratch, but even then, it will take them a while to pass the For Science! phase. (Running into a similar problem like the Sylvari).
The Dredge are an interesting case. They certainly seem to be technologically capable, having developed sonic weaponry and even radio communications (putting them in line with the Asura and Charr on that level), however nothing is shown of their actual engineering methods afaik. The handful of Dredge tanks seen show a lot of design flaws – in fact, they are comparable to WW1 german tanks (NOT WW2 – those would have been actually rather great designs… if they weren’t so astonishingly uneconomical) – big, blocky, low-riding things that barely clear the ground. To add to it, they have rather poor workmanship. Its a wonder they don’t tear themselves apart upon attempting to move around – heck, a wonder they can actually move around at all without getting stuck on a boulder taller than an asura. Still it doesn’t actually give an insight into the engineering methods…
Humans don’t seem to be doing all that much inventing – some, but nothing compared to the Asura, Charr, Dredge or Skritt. Much of their fancier stuff was given to them anyways IIRC.
Norn? Well, they aren’t much into R&D, and we’ll leave it at that.

Skimpy clothing preference

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Avan.1540

Avan.1540

Charr get such nice fur patterns… and then nearly all their armor hides it -_-

I’m not really even asking for skimpy armor in any traditional sense – I just want to be able to have something to see for all the time I spend fiddling with the colors & patterns in the char gen – I mean, its actually visually interesting and distinct charr-to-charr (unlike the sea of trenchcoats >.>). Heck, even the NPC charr get some (what appear to be) town clothes options like this but aren’t afaik obtainable by players. The people actually after skimpy would benefit by having more options that would translate to showing more skin on humanoids.

Also more non-trenchcoat options for medium armor please. I mean, there is very little visual distinction between the vast majority of medium armors.

And while I’m at it, I might as well throw in that it’d be awesome if all those terrible clipping issues for charr armor (esp Horns, Ears, Tail) got fixed.

Commanders in PVE

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I’ve generally only seen them waiting around in LA, and a few running map-completion, DE & karma farming zergs in terms of commanders in PvE. Also two instances of them not actually doing anything (afk I guess) but their icons on. Never really thought much of it TBH, but its nice their helping people out – and I can see having an actual icon as making things easier for groups over party size. I’d imagine it would be nice to have an option to show the icon only to one’s squad though.

People abusing the position is obviously not a good thing though.

Do you like dungeons better or open world?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Open world – which includes the non-instanced minidungeons

The dungeons are alright, but when I do them, I invariably find myself far more excited about the potential rewards than I do about actually playing them. That’s not the case with the overworld minidungeons (let alone the overworld itself), which I tend to simply stumble into and complete on the fly, no need for planning, no need to get guildmates together for, because the transitions are… not all that noticeable, and theres usually some people already in it. Furthermore, the mechanics tend to feel, more interesting, I guess, rather than being shuffled along from A→B→C in the instanced dungeons. As another result of the overworld not being railroaded, there’s also just a lot more things to do.

Look at that supply curve… http://www.gw2spidy.com/item/24289

At the time of posting, supply is over twice that of demand (~19k vs 8.6k). (at an even greater ratio than Ancient bones are at! ~50k vs 30k)

This really doesn’t look natural.

Never farmed or traded in them, but I’m curious as to what happened.

Bots are back? (Observed through the TP)

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Avan.1540

Avan.1540

Anet bans bots in waves, so it could be that the bot buildup is beginning to reach a critical point, where they are now in higher level areas, stealth-farming away, as I noticed certain mats (Specifically armored scales) getting supply-flooded.

Oddly the T6 mats did not at all react in a consistent manner; Scales took a steady dive over 3 days to half their price before then due to a quadrupling of supply, while vicious claws for example had doubled supply, and then over a full day of normal prices later, had a few bad hours, and then someone (or rather, a bunch of someones) decided to dump an enormous quantity of their mats and dropped by buy orders all the way down to under 6s, but it was rather transient and it quickly rebounded, and is back a bit higher than it was before the dive. Ancient bones have always had pretty low prices, and haven’t really changed. Blood went down a few silver, but had a supply burst about half a week before with similar results, and as of a few hours ago also experienced a similar dump, like the claws have. They will likely rebound, but not as quickly as claws did.

… Formatting is your friend.

Anyways, if you’ve been paying attention to the market, the supply for armored scales rose dramatically but steadily over the last few days – about quadrupled in fact, resulting in the price falling to about half of what it was. Not sure about the others, Vicious claws had a huge plummet a few hours ago, but it seems that someone just dumped their entire stock during a slightly-lower-than-normal daily low which caused an hour-long chain reaction of subsequent dumps until they reached a bit above half-price. They are already starting to quickly rebound.

Risk v reward / awful drop rates

in The Lost Shores

Avan.1540

Yeah, it seems the droprates for normal vets and champs seem to have gotten broken entirely; However, I’ve been finding a lot more rares at the jormag events lately (averaging about 2 rares/event; the ones during peak hours are a lot less profitable because everyone kills phase 1 too quickly. During non-peak hours, I managed to get 5 rares and a lodestone in a single run…). The champ drops there are broken as ever, but it seems like the vet adds at that event are about the only ones so far that have actually gotten the boosted droprates. If fractals have as good of droprates as I hear though, I’m going to do some runs of that…

I like the zone (both in terms of general aesthetic design, mobs that can pose an actual threat if you mess up (rather than being pests attacking en-masse), and thank goodness for vastly improved mob placement), just that the loot drops are rather underwhelming (and there’s no equivalent to the temple/jormag events as far as I have seen) and thus don’t provide any real reason to stay despite the higher danger factor of the area. Even about half of the junk drops are 4b junk, when normally lv80 junk is ~16b.

Mired Deep : Main story line *spoilers* Help!

in Charr

Posted by: Avan.1540

Avan.1540

Hahaha oh /that/ one…
Gosh, that one was annoying (my fault though); I didn’t even have anything beyond the starter spear <.>
What I did in my solo run was I individually lured the skale close enough to the shore to shoot them to oblivion with my rifle which was of decent stats. No downs, but it took over half an hour. (Also, I was level 16/17 at the time, scaled down to 14 for the instance). BTW – afaik, they never respawned; its probably just other skale that you accidentally aggroed and hadn’t seen before.
Then I helped a level 12 player who had a party including players of level 11, 8 and 5 (resulting in all the mobs being overleveled, I think all 16, while I was downscaled to 14, and the others unaffected due to being below the cap). I was base level 21 at this point and I had gotten a non-sucky speargun from a friend. That was… a disaster for everyone but me (I didn’t even know what mission it was until after we arrived at the instance entry point). Basically they leeroyed right into the instance and got TPKed (minus me) in the forest, so I picked off the overleveled mobs one at a time (they were sitting right on top of the downed party) and then revived everyone. Then came the skale, which I had everyone stay behind for a bit while I picked off the easy ones who were already near the edge of the lake. Then they went in, and we faced the veteran. Fortunately my new speargun was more than sufficient to take out the veteran, but the rest of the party was completely incapable of doing any lasting damage to it due to the regen due to lackluster stats and equipment, not to mention the party-size scaling.

So I would suggest both leveling up and getting a better speargun. Or you can get a good rifle and shoot them from shore by luring them sufficiently close but this takes a long time.

Dropping below 5 req members while in a dungeon...

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Avan.1540

Avan.1540

Really? o.o Ok, well, here is a complete rundown of events:

1) join some party for an AC SM run
2) enter instance, I head in following some other people, loot a coffin, see some small spiders, take a swing at them: I see ‘invincible’ pop up and think, oh, maybe a collision bug, I’ll move back.
3) In the party chat, I notice that someone comments that someone else dropped out; lo and behold, there are now only 3 other party members (so 4 total including myself)
4) In the meantime, a huge swarm of spiders appears, so I swing at them again, and a whole bunch of ‘invincibles’ pops up, so I swing dodge and try to escape so that I can exit the instance via the entrance (I didn’t see the exit icon pop up over the map), but I get completely overwhelmed by the huge swarm of invincible spiders and die.
5) I respawn at the entrance waypoint, but rytlock happens to run by with the invincible mob + 1 ascalonian in tow as I respawn and I get destroyed again when I try to make it through the cluster again.
6) I respawn yet again after waiting for them to move away and then leave the instance successfully this time.
7) I complain to a party member about the mob going invincible and not realizing what was going on and he said ‘lol you didn’t notice?’ implying that he experienced the issue as well
8) I go pay for repairs and then exit, and vent my frustration over this issue on the forums via this thread and then need to go get some food to eat.

Since Anet apparently keeps logs of gameplay and chat in order to combat spam and bots, they should be able to verify this.

Dropping below 5 req members while in a dungeon...

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Avan.1540

Avan.1540

…apparently turns all the mobs invincible yet at the same time they remain hostile.

This is a horrible solution; if you want the dungeon to become impossible to complete, might as well just auto-kick everyone or physically block continuation and a message or make the mobs friendly (thus invincible but not going to steamroll anyone in the middle of one when a party member vanishes), but the invincible hostile mobs without warning thing was terrible design (first off, this was not known/explained before hand, secondly the person dropping out just vanished, without explanation, and I hadn’t even noticed – I didn’t realize what was happening until it was too late).

I’d also like my 1.98s for armor repairs back in addition to having this behavior corrected. Not to mention it also cost me progress on the ‘exp w/o deaths’ achievement.

I haven’t noticed this ‘linguistic tension’, though as there are no language-specific ones in NA, I guess people are a bit more understanding, and its one of the least populated servers. I’ve encountered the NA dialects of spanish (which I can mostly read) and french (which I can use) on there before (though its still very rarely), and never seen any complaints, though in most cases it was just people asking for support with glitched events. There was also some korean once, but it stemmed directly from a conversation over a glitch a player was experiencing where their gathered ore was being displayed in korean for no apparent reason)

The nature of Charr names

I had been debating between using the claimed+warband surname or merely leaving it to be implied and just use the given name as the ‘display name’ (as seen with a handful of NPCs, including those in your personal story warband), with the reasoning being that it would leave more flexibility for future RPing with friends; I ended up going with the latter choice for aforementioned flexibility. I still have the rest of my character slots and may end up having a mix of naming conventions.

where is everyone?

in Charr

Posted by: Avan.1540

Avan.1540

Well, it seems like over 90-95% of bots are humans, the other 5-10% seem to be asura (probably because of their small size; its somewhat harder to notice asura or humans teleporting around than it is to see a giant norn or charr; I’ve never seen an actual norn or charr bot, but I have seen norn/charr players with bad connections lag-port around, while still clearly being legitimate players and not bots, and so I can say that seeing them lag-port around is much more apparent).

My experience has been that the human starting area is basically a huge botfest, and nearly all the other starting areas are relatively quiet by comparison, with the Plains of Ashford getting some of the highest real-player traffic, but that’s also due in part to the adjacent high-level zones nearby meaning that you have high level players walking around between there and the black citadel in order to avoid paying fast travel fees, as well as the first dungeon being located there. Of note though, on my server (Which has one of the lowest populations – I don’t actually mind this… it feels… less ‘crowded’), a lot of events get only a few people (to the point I’ve soloed 10-20% of some group event bosses before people managed to show up, and actually 100% soloed a single non-boss group event before (retake Steeleye Span), not counting NPC contributions – not that soloing them is actually ‘hard’ in gameplay, its just that someone else usually happens along before you can get over ~10-20% completion at the most); I’ve only ever noticed large numbers of people at events that are large group events or events that are being actively farmed by bots, and a couple times where dozens of people from one guild would pop out of nowhere, curbstomp the event and then run off.

Furthermore, I’ve noticed that of all the non-human starting areas, there are still a large number of Charr in my server’s Plain of Ashfords by comparison to the other starting area’s own races, but again, I’m not sure how many of them are actually low-level Charr players or are high-level Charr players who are simply transiting the area and nabbing events along the way (like myself).

As to actual server-wide frequency of Charr players, I’d say that seem to appear (simply based on visually scanning the frequency of various races PCs in the most cosmopolitan mid-level areas (most of the high-level areas there are in Charr territory, one being Norn); I honestly have had little motivation to go south due to travel costs (time/money) and the fact that Orr is apparently plagued by glitches, farmers and horribly designed risen spawns (too quickly respawning, too many, too close, too ‘same’); on top of that, Orr in its current state is probably even worse on servers with few players because it generally apparently requires multiple people pushing through the hoards of risen to make it more tolerable to play) about as frequently as Norn and maybe Asura (so about tied for second), closely followed by Asura (if they weren’t already tied in second as well) and then sylvani, with humans still the most common by far, though a decent portion of the gap is filled by bots. However, I’d say that non-human PCs still outnumber human PCs, even including the bots.

My first MMO as well; however, I come from a completely different background of purely single player games (or just doing purely single player things – I don’t PvP at all), so this probably colors my perception in a completely different way. I find it is highly social, and in a nice way too, where people are rather helpful and willing to help on request; and yeah, it can be a bit intimidating to strike up a conversation with people you don’t know, but so long as you’re sensible about it, things will go fine.

Monthly ban waves won’t work. Fortunately the areas I’ve spent most of my time in had no bots that I had seen, some areas were just swarming with them, nearly all of which were gold-farming bots as evidenced by the names and identical appearance (like people were were saying, the human starter areas tended to be the worst by far). From what I’ve heard, the botters have been causing the recent spikes in Gem prices when they buy massive quantities and just in general completely ruining the economy. Something needs to be done about them, and monthly ban waves are simply too infrequent by far; I mean, we’re talking about an interval of time similar to the length that the game has been out! At the rate of bot buildup, monthly bans might provide a bit of relief immediately following a wave, only for things to go right down the toilet again for another whole month. That just won’t cut it.

As to account security, and helping people reclaim accounts, I’d move to a ‘ban-first, appeal later’ system, but that only works if you’re going to have people who can quickly work on processing appeals.

Why did you roll a Charr?

Oh, where to start… I mean, I love them on so many levels. From their engineering and industrialization (esp. the Iron legion) to social values of efficiency to the apatheistic-ignostic basis of their ideology (outright rejecting the very notions of worship and godhood, regardless of the existence of ‘things’ that are ‘sufficiently powerful/advanced’) to simply having a snout and tail and their overall general looks, there are so many things that totally set them above the others.

Furthermore, the Charr are so very similar to many other fantasy-verse centerpiece races I’ve designed; so similar with one, in fact that aesthetics aside, they could be nearly interchangeable with it (the only major differences being in military structure, and in technology – specifically that the Charr don’t use radiothermo sources of heat (though that was all stemming from the plot…), they don’t use concrete (But thats pushing into aesthetics…), and don’t have wide-spread use of flying machines (There is one Charr who is trying to make a helicopter though, which makes them all that more similar, since that other race uses pretty much entirely helicopter-type aircraft))

Just look at the playable areas; the region of Ascalon was once cinders, ghosts, and flame legion, and later on was hit by the Branding. Its managed to regrow a good amount of plant life, the ghosts are loosing ground (Note how the main/playable section of the Black Citadel is entirely ghost-free; there is a walled off section that is still ghost infested, but you can’t access it due to invisible barriers preventing jumping into there.) – its rather amazing how far and developed the Charr have managed to get the area, especially considering that they were basically starting at square one when coming out from under the dominance of the flame legion and a costly war with Ascalon, which to some extent is still going on due to the foefire ghosts. To have an army, you need to sustain it; to sustain an army, you have to have the resources. Getting the land into a useable shape I imagine would have taken up a large amount of resources.

On top of that, you actually need a motivation to go to war with the world (which would also result in a multifront war, which is never good – look at this world’s World Wars) – the current Charr efforts to reclaim Ascalon stem from this being originally their territory before proto-Ascalonian human invaders drove them north, which had then been part of the basis for the Flame legion (in its days of dominance) to conquer the area, and the Iron legion assumed control over it after the Flame legion and the shaman caste fell; but by then there was already a lot of resentment from the humans in the southernmost regions, going down the Ebonhawk, and hence the war continued there, only stopping once the threat of the dragons was apparent (And still there are rebels who bear so much resentment towards the other race that they want to keep fighting; its a war stemming from a vicious cycle, not a war for the sake of omnicide). Militaries also have much more use than simply sending them off to fight in wars; they provide all sorts of diplomatic/political leverage, which can turn into economic leverage – and especially for the industrialized Iron legion, advantages in trade can be particularly useful.

My opinion: the Black Citadel is so bad to explore.

I’ll admit, the minimap was being a bit obtuse at first with regards to the multileveled nature of the map, but I figured out the location of everything that first time through and haven’t had problems since. I still managed to 100% it my first time there. I still think it was the easiest.
