Why Do People Dislike Their Rangers?

Bast Bow.2958

first of all you have a bigger chance people strolling around these forums have something to ‘complain’ about.
I think there’s a majority of people just playing the game, enjoying it, and don’t bother posting at these forums, rangers included.
But if people have critics to something, including a profession as the ranger, they’ll prolly want to complain or, hopefully, provide some constructive feedback and do that here.

That said…

Spirits need work, as do pets.
That’s it. And other professions prolly also have things that need some work..

I love the ranger profession, has been my main since release GW1, and prolly will be for a very very long time.

I have much experience PvE wise, not so much PvP.

Ranger PvE: Great. Very capable to solo a lot of things. Spirits and Pets still need work to make them (more) viable.
Compared to other professions, when playing in a team I find rangers not to be good combo-starters, but very good combo-finishers.

Builds/specs/traits: I find a ranger perfect. As a player you can make your build very complex synergized with your weapons, pets and other players, but very simple is also possible and viable. Makes, and keeps, it a fun profession to play with.
To clear out the difference with another profession, for example, I find a mesmer not easy to synergize with my 2 weapons sets and how defensive/offensive/control etc I want it to be. In all cases to make a mesmer viable, it’s pretty complex.

PvP: Can’t compare with other professions yet since I haven’t played them yet. But in WvsW you’re very bound to tanky pets or you have to take some utility skills/traits into account to make your more squishier pet viable. (same for PvE dungeons)

Monk/Ritualist/Healer/Healing Options

@ Pikafan. You’re way off mate sorry. I’m not making this up. Read the forums, especially the suggestions part. I see A LOT of people wanting monks and I really wonder why.

But interesting answers you guys have.

So most answers come down to option 2A or B.
This means people want a monk because people die to fast

This means it’s either, or maybe both:

1 People don’t play together (well?) enough.
2 People have a hard time speccing right. Maybe trying to lean to much to a DPS-build, control or support.

Monk/Ritualist/Healer/Healing Options

Bast Bow.2958

I see a lot of people asking for a monk, or ritualist with healing options.

Wasn’t GW2’s strenght that the holy trinity was gone?

What does it mean that people are asking for a healer-type profession?

Options:

1 These people don’t know about the fact that GW2’s strenght was to get rid of the holy trinity and are looking for a dedicated healing profession. While there isn’t one and the creators didn’t intend to make such a profession.
- This will mean that a part of the community still has to know that there won’t be such a profession and they simply will have to learn and deal with it.

2 People die too fast.
This could mean that
A People don’t play together enough. This does mean and indicate that when you play with a few people or party you have enough healing/protection (what you want to call it) to keep you on your feet. When solo-ing it’s hard to do enough damage and still keep enough survivability…?
Ab Why don’t people play together so much and solo a lot?
B It is hard to spec your character in such a way to do enough damage but also keep your survivability high enough.
C Anet intended to make all professions in such a way that when playing together, everyone could fullfill the role of tank, dps or healer. Since people are asking for a monk/healer, Anet’s intentions are not working?

3 People actually miss the dedicated healing profession because it was fun to play. Which may result to the conclusion that the holy trinity wasn’t a weakness at all…?

What do you think?

What he said was pretty clear.

Necro>Ele>Mesmer>Engi in terms of how hard they are to play.

Not balance.

Take into account this was said during a Beta Weekend Event (2nd or 3d, don’t recall). There has been a lot of twitching/nerving/adding/removing since that time.

And indeed, it says nothing about best/worst profession.

My assessment over a month after the official launch.

Problems 2:

  • Alongside the topic of balance is bias. JonPeters should not post things in favor or disfavor of certain classes. I’m referring to the post about the Necromancer is something to be feared when they master DS (or however he phrased it.) Posts like that and little progress with the Necromancer bugs/balance is enough to perceive bias. I do believe there is bias and it is against my favorite class. A person in a position of authority shouldn’t abuse that authority. What guarantee am I offered that JonPeters won’t nerf Necromancer and buff his favorite class? Perception is reality.

I understand what you are saying.

Then again. Jon Peters is ‘probably’ also just a human who enjoys this game and maybe in his enthousiasm about the necromancer (which doesn’t mean he isn’t just as enthousiastic about other professions) got carried away (doubt it) and used words which may state that the necromancer is a profession you should really look out for or something like that.

Isn’t this being pulled out of context and blown up gigantically?

You didn’t quote the context in which he used it.
At the end of the line he just said that a type of build for the necromancer is something to look out for. Point. That’s it.
Don’t jump to conclusions or overanalize.

Do you really think most people that read that analize it that much and think Jon Peters thinks that necromancer build is the best build evveerrrrr?

I don’t think so… Or am I mistaking and do most people who read that really blow it up that much?

If that’s so, that means you’re right and Devs really need to overthink what words they use when speaking about a certain profession or something because the community gets all hyped up about what they say and overanalize it 300 times.

In that case… poor Devs.

@ CC Dalmarus: Thanks for sharing! Happens to be my main to.

@ Kyias, Naginto and andybmcc: Let’s not demotivate the devs for sharing by jumping on them what to improve because they happen to enjoy a certain profession… Please.
There are other parts in this forum that provide the oppertunity for you to provide constructive feedback on how to improve the gameplay and they read those posts too.

This post is just for them to let us know what profession they like and play the most, without us jumping to conclusions or letting them know what to improve.

As long as we make that clear, I don’t see any reason why they would not tell us.

I can think of a few reasons. All of them have to do with the way players interpret and overanalyze every single thing a Developer says, to the point of paranoia. If a Dev says his main is a Thief, you can be absolutely sure a lot of players are going to blame him if they have a problem with Thieves in PVP. Ditto for any other given option.

“That Dev plays Elementalist? Well she obviously isn’t doing her job, because our profession sucks.” That sort of thing.

Obviously not all of us are going to respond this way, but the risk is probably too high to justify too many Devs openly taking about their gaming habits.

You are right about that.

But, I expect and hope the majority of our community doesn’t do that. Most of us are wise enough not to overanalize what their main is. Again, it’s not about what they think the best profession is, it’s what they find the most fun profession to play with, without disregarding the other ones as less good or whatever.
Just like you and me, we have a main, but do I think the other professions are worse? No of course not, just not my playstyle.

I also hope and expect that the minority that does overanalize that, gets corrected by the majority of the community that understands that their main is nothing to overanalize.
I think the community is that far.
Let’s see?

Race: If I had to choose an already existing GW2 race: I’d prefer Tengu.

Profession: Just throwing out an idea.

The Martial Artist

Like the elementalist’s attunements, the Martial Artist has Fighting-Styles
1. Capoeira
2. Boxing
3. Jiu-Jitsu/Karate (not sure which one, also considering how to implement in game..)
4. Wrestling

All of which gives you certain specific arm- and/or footbraces which cover weapon-stats etc.

The profession’s special traitline: Reflexes: Reduces recharge of the four Fighting-Styles.

Conditions could be as such: Immobilized/Crippled added to skills in Jiu-Jitsu. Blindness/Bleed added to skills in Boxing. Poison/Confusion added to skills in Capoeira. Fear/Vulnerability added to skills in Wrestling.

Capoeira and Jiu-Jitsu/Karate being a bit more AOE-oriented. Boxing and Wrestling more oriented on a single target.

Wrestling and Capoeira having more party wide buffs.

There are a lot of known skills for each fighting style, but don’t have the time to look them all up. It also needs something to cover fighting from mid or long range, I haven’t figured that out yet. Was thinking about telekinetic abilities or something to cover that, but not sure if that is a good option.

Weapons being braces.

Example skills Capoeira:

Main hand braces capoeira: Gives 3 capoeira skills like:
1. Balanca: A series of side to side feints done with the torso to deceive the opponent, throw off their timing, and make it harder for them to track the centerline, ends with a forward kick giving confusion to your opponent.
2. Followed up by: Bananeira: It’s a handstand; The hands are spread at least shoulder-width apart and the legs are usually together over the capoerista’s head resulting in a kick.
3. Followed up by: Macaco: The macaco is similar to a back handspring with the exception of starting with one hand planted behind the capoeirista and the initial movement starting from a low crouch. resulting in a swing-kick giving daze to your opponent.

Off hand braces capoeira: Gives 2 defensive skills like:
4. Cocorinha: With the feet flat on the ground the player squats with the knees to the chest so as to close the body and covers the side of the torso and head with one hand while the other is flat and to the side for support. Grants Swiftness and Regeneration to yourself.
5. Esquiva Lateral: Many forms exist but all involve moving the head and torso out of the way of an attack. Esquivas distinguish capoeira from many other Martial arts for the simple fact of going along with flow of the attack and releasing an equal or more devastating attack. Granting Retaliation and Aegis to you and your allies.

Feel free to adjust or add things if you like the idea.

Interesting!

He clearly states ‘imo’. Other devs may think different. As all players do too.
Seen this picture before somewhere, if I recall correclty during BWE 2 or 3.

To clear up a possible misinterpretation from my post: I’m not trying to find out what a dev think is the best profession.
I’m wondering what their favorite profession, or as we call ‘main’, is.

That is something different and says nothing about what they think is the best profession.
As long as we make that clear, I don’t see any reason why they would not tell us.

PvE

Raven – For it’s dps, blind and bleed.
Brown Bear – To back up Raven when it’s almost down, and for it’s tankiness and condition removal.

The rest of my traits are primarily dps based, and a bit support.
My utility skills primarily party-buffs.

Therefor raven (and bear), and not moa’s for example.

Overall my build leans more to dps then to support or control. Prolly something like 50 – 30 – 20

What's the point of entangling roots?

can only talk PvE here,

it’s epic in PvE.. run into some mobs. Place it well, then run a bit back and drop down your barrage on the mobs while they’re still immobilzed and already damaging from your entangling roots. Does a lot of damage and gives a lot of control too.
I like it a lot.

Spirits Unbound

in Ranger

Posted by: Bast Bow.2958

Bast Bow.2958

Hello fellow rangers

I’m playing a spirit build since headstart and really enjoying it. Pretty experienced with it by now, though only still lvl 66.

My question, how important is spirits unbound when running a spirit build in PvE?

Hope some of you have and will take the time to read this through and come with some insights I overlooked or mis-judged.

1: I’m doing pretty fine by anticipating fights so I place my spirits well so my partymembers can benefit from them through most of the fight.

2: Also, most fights take place at 1 place if you know what I mean.
A group of mobs is standing somewhere waiting for your party to come nearby and the fight takes place in that surrounding. Then you move up again to the next group of mobs, boss or other type of enemy.

3: Related to point 2, recharge time of the spirits. It’s 60 seconds. That’s not that bad right? My experience tought me that in this way I can never have the spirits up 24/7 to provide their benefits if me and my party are killings mobs like: Killing mob. Run a certain distance (big enough to go out of the spirits reach), kill a mob. Run again, etc etc.
This way usually the mobs die quick enough so I can’t have my spirits up at the next group of mobs because recharge time of the spirits is to slow.
But that’s the biggest flaw I experience when not taking spirits unbound. And it’s not that of a pain. Caus 60 seconds is pretty quick and by the time we reach mobs that really require my spirits to be up caus it’s a difficult group to kill, it takes longer anyway… >>> So I can get them up again .

4: The range of the spirits which provide the benefit is pretty large right? You don’t actually have to put them in the heat of battle to make sure everyone’s covered by your spirits benefits. So in that way, (hopefully) they’re not targeted fast and killed quickly (not talking bout traits: vigorous spirits or nature’s vengeance which help in that case, not the point of my post).

So, with all this taking in account. The final question is:

Can you provide a decent spirits buff build for your party-members while not bringing trait: spirits unbound along?

I think I can, but I might miss some important things,
So I’d really like to hear your oppinion about this, I know there’s a lot of experience in the community that can bring good insights.

Thanks!

@ jonG.

Mate, check the first page, a dev has replied to this topic and he said that it’s in the works momentarily.

To the rest, if we really want to help in this matter. We should come with a list, or at least a few pets that have this problem a lot, that’s what the dev said and sounds logic to me.

And then I should come with an example….

That I don’t have lol.
But it’s the way to go atm…

I always have a bear with me.. Never fought without it.
Second pet differs, felines or birds usually, to get some dps going. If they’re almost dead, I change to bear. (don’t be too late, ‘caus when they’re dead the cooldown to change pet increases a lot)

Though I’d like to fight with different mixes, and not always to be bound to bears…
Then I’d have to change my traits and utility skills and then I’m guessing I’d be fine too —> signet of stone and signet of the wild for utility skills. And some points in beast mastery and matching traits like --> compassion training and natural healing.

With that combination of utility skills and traits I think the more squishier pets like birds, felines and spiders will hold up pretty good too.

Ah I forgot to mention this TERRIBLE long animation of summoning. It’s so annoying considering the fact you have to re-summon 2+ spirits every 1 minute in best case ofcourse. The underwater animation is more faster and, well, it satisfies me.

long animation…?
How long does it take really? I’m guessing 1 second. I don’t find that long at all.

I can imagine snakes divided into 2 groups

poisonous ones: (king)cobra, rattle snake, black mamba
underwater: seasnake (which no doubt have more species too)
These inflict poison and maybe bleeding or blindness to the enemy.

constrictor snakes: boa constrictor, python,
underwater: anaconda
These inflict immobilize and maybe confusion to the enemy.

I imagine fear can be added as well to certain snakes

Currently each family has 4 or 5 pets right? So I think it’ll be easier to make 1 group of snakes. 2 poisonous ones and 2 constrictors, which both have an underwater-species and maybe add 1 to one another to have 5 in total
