It’s a grind when you can’t get 4 other players to play anything other than the speedrun path. Or even getting teammates because you aren’t pimped out for speedruns in the first place. Or even if you simply dislike teaming in general since it’s not required in the bulk of the rest of the game to earn rewards.

Being required to do something you normally wouldn’t do because you need to earn enough skee-ball tickets to buy the thing you need to make the thing you need to make the thing you want … essentially defines grind. What was that piece over at “Extra Credits”, intrinsic vs extrinsic rewards.

I finished my legendary yesterday, I wouldn’t say that there was much grind involved in it just 1 or 2 smart investments.

Well since you can only get certain “gifts” if you grind a particular dungeon daily (Gift of Ascalon for example) or participate in WvW for quite a long time (Gift of Battle) besides the Gift of Exploration, I respectfully dispute your statement.

Hey I’m actually with you, I’m doing it simply because I’m a completionist kitten and want to get X of X on all the maps. But I suspect that we are in the minority.

However if their goal was to expose me to WvW, a PvP environment, and I hadn’t wanted to play PvP ever, they have succeeded in making me like this aspect of the game by first forcing me to “just try it, you’ll like it”.

Legendary should mean something. Some long term, hard core commitment to the game. It should require more effort than some watery tart throwing one at you.

This topic is about World Completion, not Legendaries.

Legendaries do require long term commitment to the game.

Since the primary benefit to world completion are the two Gifts of Exploration which are required to make a Legendary then discussing it is fair game. Or are all the players lamenting about the WvW map requirement simply want a gold star and a title?

Since to earn all the various requirements to forge your own legendary, requiring activities in all areas of the game, areas that some players simply loath to do, such as WvW or specific Dungeons, it therefore takes a long time, in terms of hours of play.

There is no tagging for XP.

Well, yeah, actually there is. However you won’t steal from anyone else by doing so (barring getting it killed before others can tag it).

Sorry, I meant that in some games tagging it first means you were the only one credited with the kill. Important in Kill X of Y quests. Here everyone gets credited even if you only did a relatively small amount of damage to it.

Thanks for some of the tips all! Guess I will go for some dungeon running + daily stuff..

Biggest reason I felt poor was the simply stunning amount of money a legendary weapon costs (2300g) and me running around with 2-3g lol

But thanks guys!

Well legendary is meant to be a personal crafting quest for those who played almost all aspects of this game. Crafting one is a long, arduous and costly process. Each character is limited to crafting only two. So actually selling one is a big thing and extreme rarity goes hand in hand with an extreme price.

Some of your skills include a block mechanic which simply means the next hit (within a few seconds of triggering that skill) misses instead. But dodging is big. Circle strafing is big if you have a range weapon. Since you can only attack what’s in front of you, and vice versa, getting behind a critter is also a tactic in reducing hits.

There is no healer. Everyone can rez. Everyone has a heal.

There is no tagging for XP. There is no KSing. You are encouraged to join in to help. You aren’t stealing anyone’s chance of loot. It’s less about formal party play and more about flash mob violence. Popular Dynamic Events (DEs), popular because of a guarantee rare item once a day for everyone participating, will draw huge crowds seemingly out of nowhere. Even normal DEs with average loot will draw in passerby to do them.

Again, check out the link Dasorine posted, lots of useful knowledge there.

@marnick and others

Sadly today’s youth want both portability and performance and aren’t willing to compromise on either (price is also really big which leads to many a laughable question). They want to take their gaming rig to their SO’s, parent’s, friend’s, wherever and still be able to play their games. This is why trying to get them to go with a desktop rig fails. And because they aren’t willing to compromise on graphic settings, they want a gamer class GPU.

As for reduced lifespan of a laptop versus the ease of fixing or upgrading a desktop, laptops are like cell phones for this generation. Entirely disposable and obsolete in a year or two. They don’t expect they will still have the same one by the next Presidential election so burning out a gaming lapto kitten imply expected and something to plan for. (Edit: WOW! The objectionable word filter is a little extreme now isn’t it.)

Personally I believe people who want to do hardcore gaming on laptops are silly. Keyboards are smaller, CPUs and GPUs are a notch or two slower, battery life is laughable (which is why gamers think of it simply as an easily transported computer), just too many compromises to reach a set price point/limit.

Yes, the GTX 675MX is the best of the two you listed. marnick is right however, it will likely produce a lot of heat so ventilation is very important. You may also want to use the setting that caps the framerate as that should help with the heat generated.

millions of excess silk scraps/thick leather

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

It’s a basic material used to make other things. The problem is a supply problem. Too much is being created because everyone is salvage happy.

What are the rules of thumb players are telling newbs, salvage white, salvage high level rares for ectos? Look I just got a level 77 white light armor coat as a drop in a lower level zone. Gee let me salvage it and look, silk scraps. Need to crack this rare light armor for the ecto and the rune, oh look, silk scraps. I’ll right click in my inventory panel and sell those on the TP for 8c each, costing 1c to post. Who knows, maybe some millennium it may actually sell.

We need a silk scrap – thick leather section sink big time. Now there is a way to promote 250 T5 to ??? amount of T6 but it’s likely be a major gold sink (I haven’t tried it myself) requiring, in this case, 5 x T6 pile of dust which is worth like 1g25s. With gossamer scrap worth nearly 1s, I don’t see this as a popular means to turn silk scrap ever into something worth more than the 17.5s you can get for selling 250 silk scrap to a vendor after all the expenses. How about alternative street clothes. T-shirts with guild logos. Something that’s desirable, won’t unbalance the game, and is an attractive alternative to mindlessly posting even more silk scraps to the TP.

I don’t know what that could be but 4-6 million supply for 12,500 demand clearly shows a supply problem.

I do have to say this about farming, I love to farm, I farm for my guilds need as well as my own(it’s how I make my IGM). I never stay in one spot very long and I do stalk the dragons and other events daily, but, it just seems I must play my game the way ANET decides I must play it. Why?

because
A) it’s their game
B) like other games they did state that they’re against farming. Both Tera and Guild Wars 2 discourage farming.
Older MMOs allow it and free to play MMO force you to do it. By now there should be an MMO for everyone on the market and I’m sure that you should be able to find one that allows you to farm.

buy to play, not free to play

True, but ANet keep pushing people to the cash store like any other F2P around…

Because the cash store keeps the lights on. In a true F2P it also pays for the initial development cost so inventory slots are ridiculously few and all items are plain and generic in their looks. Here there is a lot of variation in appearance among the easily attainable armors and weapons and our inventory is reasonably sufficient if you use the free consumables that get dropped on you as rewards, even if you don’t need them.

Gem prices about to skyrocket again

in Black Lion Trading Co

Behellagh.1468

I think the generic MMO player’s definition of grind is the following.

1) I want item X
2) I can only get item X with “currency” Y
3) I can only get “currency” Y by doing activity Z
4) I never wanted to do activity Z before, I don’t like doing activity Z.
5) Therefore I have to “grind” activity Z just so I can get item X.

Now activity Z can by anything that the player wasn’t looking to do. Fractals, Dailies, Dungeons, PvE, PvP, WvW, DE, TP, Orr, etc. Now yes there are a lot of equivalent rewards in the game but often it’s the cosmetic/convenience that ANet are rewarding in these events and the Gem store.

Now if you want items from the Gem store for no real life cost, you pay in gold. However earning gold in this game isn’t easy unless you do activities that you may find “distasteful”, repeatedly. In a game where formal parties/groups aren’t required, having to run dungeons with a party of five is almost like requiring formal attire for the bar after 5pm at an hedonistic Caribbean beach resort. It sticks out like a sore thumb, but dungeon speed runs is the widely accepted way to earn gold quickly in this game by at least an order of magnitude over normal means.

As long as A ) the gem store keeps offering new popular items or but existing ones on sale and B ) players don’t want to spend real cash to get gems; we will have players being “forced” to play aspects of the game that they see as “grind”.

I take the UI comes up but it denies your debt/credit card.

Yea, NCSOFT seems to have some of the most ridiculous security in place for cash store proxy purchases of any publisher.

You aren’t traveling are you? Playing on a laptop away from your normal IP address or perhaps just relocated from college back home? Does the IP you are using map to the zipcode on your card? I’ve heard stories from other NCSOFT games where to reduce DC/CC fraud they refuse transactions if there is the slightest hint that you may not be who you say your are.

They’ve also had in the past put limits on transactions amounts per month/30 day cycle. Have you bought a lot of Gems with cash recently? Or enough to put you over a $100/100 Euro limit?

Also this could be a bank/CC company thing. If the CC company just had a number of transactions voided due to fraud they may have black listed NCSOFT. Assuming this card worked in the past.

Lastly, is this the first time you have tried to buy gems directly?

Whatever the reason there are similar threads almost constantly over on the Tech Support board. You may have to put in a support ticket if there is some reason they are blocking you.

Sorry. Hopefully you live near a BestBuy or maybe a GameStop and see if they have any of those $25/2000 Gem cards in stock. I think I’ve seen them at Walmart and Target as well.

Also there is a lot of posts complaining about the difficulty of getting world completion if your world is stuck as the same color, the same starting location, week after week after week. And yes, JQ had been green for the last three months straight. Yes it’s beneficial since the rate drops slightly but Firebaall’s argument that the difference in the exchange rate benefits those converting to gold to gems so those buying gems with cash need a bonus to benefit equally.

My point is those buying with cash are already benefiting more and more since the gems they bought represents an every increasing amount of time in-game to earn gold to achieve the same number of gems.

Really? What points and why?

Do you dispute that Gold->Gem prices haven’t gone up ten times since the start of the game?

Or do you thing that gold per hr injected into the game has gone up more than 10x?

Or that cash for gems hasn’t remained at 80 Gems per $1 US?

Sorry players who are converting gold to gems need to play more to earn the amount of gold required to convert into the same amount of gems as they did 8 months ago. Since free time isn’t infinite they are at an increasing disadvantage if they want to buy items from the gem shop than someone who can afford to pay for gems in actual real money. So if they are already at a disadvantage with a flat cash to gem rate, one that grants bonuses for larger cash transactions will put then at an even greater disadvantage.

So, where’s the fault in my argument Firebaall?

I look at it this way. In-game wealth generation hasn’t really changed all that much since the game started. Sure as players developed speed runs and learned to predict when big payout DEs happen. This has “optimized” it somewhat but for the most part it’s relatively unchanged. Note the TP with all it’s money making strategies doesn’t actually create new wealth, it simply shifts it between players and at a loss to boot. I’m talking actual wealth creation, coin and items being added to the game world without any consumption of in game materials.

On the other had Gold->Gem prices has increased 10×. So it’s the player in the game who is at a disadvantage since the cash for Gem price has remained consistent the entire time. So a Gem bonus for buying in bulk exaggerates the disadvantage of the player using gold for gems even more and not as Firebaall suggests, the player buying Gems for cash.

RNG broken or is it just me

Random Number Generator is random. Chance is often not understood well by non-mathematicians. This is why college courses on the subject is probability and statistics because without statistics you can’t truly understand probability.

Simple questions like “if you have a 1 in 10 chance to win an item, how many attempts would it take if you want a 50% chance of winning at least once?” The answer is 7, which seems counter intuitive. 90% chance of winning at least once, 22. 99% chance, 44. These really set your “common sense” reeling. And this is the simplest example. Also with 44 attempts you have a slightly better than 1% chance of winning 10 or more times.

This is why there’s a lot of RNG anger out there.

Or if players stop crafting so many, which they do to level their crafting past that range.

Or if players stop leveling so quickly because they don’t stop and update their armor and weapons as much since they will be superseded soon enough and at low levels unless you are twinking a new character with the bankroll of an old, in which case you simply buy higher grade stuff to begin with.

I’ve only been here since the start of December so I have no idea what kind of exclusives or sales they had before then but I’m now noticing a trend of testing, identifying and then releasing items or establishing sales frequently enough that the Gem prices no longer drift down as they had in the past, if you look at GW2Spidy. We are being hit by monthly or twice monthly popular items that ratcheted the Gold->Gem price upwards, which of course either drain the gold coffers of players or forcing them to now spend real cash. That is a “good” thing since that’s what’s keeping the lights on but if you had been hooked on buying gems with gold cheaply it’s a shock to your system.

It’s as if they’ve now have enough data to tune their release strategy to the Gem Store to encourage Cash for Gem sales.

On Jade Quarry he is missing in the Wayfarer Foothills (sorry about that) but I’m not hallucinating when I say he still exists in Diessa Plateau.

Virtual economies and real world applications

Well in a virtual economy I would say most participants don’t have the patience to maximize their profit. To them it’s all about cash flow, ie sell now to highest buyer rather than price the item and wait for a buyer, and immediate gratification or JIT supply, it buy what you need/want now rather than plan ahead with buy orders and be willing to wait for it.

In the real world small Mom & Pop stores aren’t trying to maximize profit as much as having enough cash flow to cover the bills for the month. Most don’t have a revolving credit line to handle cyclical nature of the business cycle. So they don’t have large inventories which could have provided a price break or could handle a sudden sales rush, since it ties up cash now. They are also more willing to sell existing inventory at a loss just to free up the cash for more immediate needs. I would say this is how the average player is using the TP.

The “skilled” TP player is playing a longer game when it comes to buying and selling. They are willing to wait for others to either provide or pay the prices they set and not the price the under/over churn caused by short term players.

millions of excess silk scraps/thick leather

The problem with those T5 salvage mats is that there isn’t enough demand. There isn’t a problem with mithril because it’s used in both heavy armor and weapons as well as sigils and runes. Silk and thick leather however are limited to light and medium armors.

As long as players simply dump those onto the TP like mithril from salvage, instead of realizing they’ll get a few coppers more at this point selling them directly to a vendor, they will always be an overwhelming surplus of them. On the other hand selling them on the TP is a gold sink where selling them to a vendor is a gold source and keeps the overall money supply from growing.
