Easiest way to estimate the size of the PSU you will need is to use the eXtreme Power Supply Calculator lite

http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

550-600 watts is normally a good size for the CPU/GPU pair you are looking at. Big point is to get a high quality modern PSU. The important number isn’t just the total max wattage of the PSU but the max wattage at 12 volts, which is where both the CPU and GPU draw their power from. And since about 90% of a gaming rig’s power is going to the PSU and GPU, it’s fairly important.

Personally, I favor Intel i5/i7 over the current AMD CPUs when it comes to gaming. It may not be the CPU’s fault but the better connection from CPU to the graphics PCIe controller with Intel (it’s integrated into the high speed memory bus within the CPU itself) Vs AMD’s old school Northbridge. Let me trot out this

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/guild-wars-2-performance-benchmark,3268-7.html

However if in any game where a game is GPU bound, CPU performance isn’t as important (ie Metro 2033).

E1-1200 is a netbook APU. Similar CPU performance to the Intel Atom CPUs. The graphics side only has 80 shader cores. I really wouldn’t expect more than 15fps on performance settings at 1366×768.

Why limit FPS?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

Why limit? It lowers the work load on the GPU but mainly the CPU assuming you are using a rig that can easily handle 30 or 60 fps. Lower load mean lower heat and power use which may also lower fan noise due to cooling.

Most LCD monitors connected with HDMI or DVI are limited to 60FPS.

Ticking off your customers, ones who you want to spend money on Gems for the gem shop, your only post game sale income, wasn’t all that smart.

How do you fix that? I think offering the weapon skins at the gem shop straight up could simply tick even more off, those who went a little crazy buying keys. At least now finding someone wielding a fused skin weapon is at least a symbol of either your luck or bank account (in game or out of). Makes the player feel somewhat special. Of course it alienates everyone who wanted one and didn’t get one.

The linear paths and excessive hand-holding ANet does is killing gw2 slowly. People will go on about entitlement, but really it’s more about the control of dedication, prolonging content via gating. ANet wants to be know for breaking molds and I am sure they’d love to take the crown from WoW, but unless they give more power to the player with dedication and shinies, I don’t see them ever getting close.

I am not talking about box sale numbers here, but active players and the state of the game.

*edit, power to the player (not meaning stats) though, cosmedics are not much of a reward honestly, especially the way loot is done in this game.

What linear path? I chose my own way around Tyria and had a blast doing it. I wasn’t forced to run dungeons or do my “personal story”. Nobody forced me to go left or right when I come to a fork in the road. If I wasn’t cutting across the map. Guides may have told me what is in a particular area but I rarely if ever did what they suggested. I explored the world and did events or hearts or skill challenges in whatever order I felt like.

Bah! Linear path, right.

What the hell happened to Armored Scales?!

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

We all have to remember that a sudden spike like the one Makato’s charts show can simply be an effect of all the sensibly priced scales being bought out leaving behind scales that had been priced considerably higher for months.

Then what happens is that Mat pops up on everyone’s profit seeking TP tool as well as players selling scales who have no idea what the prevailing price was before. They just see the current price and undercut it. Same with the next and the next. Spike followed by quick decay but not back down to it’s previous price.

There use to be 15-20K supply of them. Now it’s a few thousand. And yes the drop in supply started around the time of SAB.

Well it looks like a trip to Frostgorge Sound is in order tonight.

Why is crafting financially useless?

in Crafting

Behellagh.1468

Define “good”? Level 80 Exotic? Rare?

Well jeweler is difficult simply because of the rise of ascended accessories, rings and amulets. That’ll kill demand right there.

As for cost of materials, well ectos has become the “gold” to hedge against inflation in this game. Players make them from salvage, people hoard them and when they do sell them it’s for nearly as much and sometimes more as the rares players salvage to get them.

Then the rest of T6 basic materials are expensive, due to their rareness in drops.

Also it’s quite often that “subassemblies” are cheaper to buy than to craft from scratch. It costs 27.86s to craft from scratch a T6 Chrysocola Orb. It costs 2.11s to simply buy one. Why? Cost of the T1-T5 dust mats is almost 20s and the T1 gems cost the other 8s that’s why. Even crafting one just from T5 mats will still cost more than 5×.

But why are mats so expensive? Supply and demand. Because of the drop rate, the number of players harvesting them versus the number of players crafting. Players following crafting guides to level up that skill all make the same thing and then all dump them on the TP and accept the loss. Which is good if you are smart enough to buy subassemblies, not so good if you are looking to craft everything from scratch.

And if you do make a shinny that you could make a profit on someone will come along and undercut you with the one they got as a drop. To them the whole thing is profit, they don’t care if they wipe out your margin.

Yea, it’s tough to “make a living” crafting.

Gold to gem Rate- to high?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

The rate is determined by how much gold has been converted to Gems and how many Gems have been converted to gold since the game launched.

The Gem store sales and the fuse skin rush ended up with a lot of players converting their gold into gems which in turn spikes the price up.

There hasn’t been much of a spike since the SAB started up. Actually it’s been pretty flat on average.

Simple fix to T6 bags

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

They are worthless because a) they created by salvaging high level basic gear which can drop from everywhere on a high level character and b) players mindlessly dumped so much of it on the TP that you actually make less money selling it there than to a merchant.

Where as T6 dust only drops from very high level critters, only found in high level zones. If players are tired fighting the risen on Orr, the supply won’t be there.

Rarity means pricey, common means cheap. T6 dust, only 5K or so available at TP = rare. Silk Scraps, over 3 million for sale = cheap.

Sad but true. Exactly how A-Net set it up… buy those gems… trade for gold… all the leather you want

A-Net has to make money so they can eat and provide for their families… I wish they could do it without handcuffing the crafting system.

The amount of materials you need just to make an Unidentified Dye… Just one example of thousands that make me think every time … "if this was a “sub”…. this would be fun… but it’s more less… “feed the rich”

Whoa! Tin foil hat zone.

The various leather sections sell for between 5 to 35 copper a piece. Hardly a princely sum and not out of whack with compared with ore and logs. And actually cheaper than buying the raw hides off of the TP (but you can get from 1-3 leather sections out of a hide, so maybe that’s OK).

NCsoft stock has significantly dropped since the release of GW2, that tells me that something isn’t doing too well.

NCSoft isn’t only about GW2. About the time when GW2 was released, City of Heroes was shut down and that had some serious backlash.

So you think that CoH’s revenue was a big enough loss to counter the massive amounts of money that GW2 made at release?

If anything CoH was shut down to help revenue, not to hurt it.

But, I agree as a publisher of games, and not the developer, GW2 is just a small part of the entire NCSoft company and as such NCSoft’s ability to be worth less than half of what it was a year and a half ago, may not have anything to do with GW2.

The gaming industry in general is down.

Complex and Guild Wars 2 don’t belong in the same sentence. If a 6 year old can figure out basic combat, I’m sure that 50 year old wii bowling person can. You know they have tournaments in wii bowling for people 50-80+ years old? We have a 50 something year old in our guild, they play regularly. This game appeals to many types, hence why it is doing so well. And I still know military veterans who I served with in iraq who are in their late 40’s and 50’s who play several video games, some of which are MMO’s and not just FPS games. This whole blanketing everyone with the hardcore/casual term is getting old, as is the assumption of who likes the game and who doesn’t.

Hey, I resemble that comment. Plus I’ve been playing PC games since the days of boot floppy copy protection and Hercules monochrome graphics. Before that I played Atari 800 games when “Electronic Arts” had a cool hip poster of their developers and their games came in album styled packaging.

Oh yea, NCSoft is doing so well on the coattails of GW2. It has just lost over 50% of its value in the last year and a half.

And GW2 is only 7 months old.

NCSOFT (hey they insisted on the all caps in the EULA) stock bubble popped 18 months ago. There was no fiscally sound reason for their stock to be at 380,000 KrW. It was “everyone on the momentum train to the stars”. If GW2 had anything to do with its decline it’s because NCSOFT kept telling investors it’ll be out (as well as Blade & Soul) “really soon now” for years. Just like how they told them that there will be a GW2 paid expansion in the fall. Finally someone noticed the emperor had no clothes and then “We’re on the express elevator to hell, going down!”

Heck it appears that investors in Korea were more upset with Blade & Soul’s lackluster numbers and apparent cannibalization of their other games’ players in Korea than GW2’s success in the west.

Having to pop-up UI just to see if player in distance is friendly/enemy is a pain, but it stops the UI spam fest.

In my case the guild I belong to, and you can actually belong to four at the same time in this game but you can only “represent” one at a time which grants you whatever guild goodies they may have available, is a group of fellow players from our closed MMO. I’m rather low ranking so I’m not sure how “exclusive” our guild is suppose to be.

Different values in "Gold to Gems".

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

The value of 1 gem changes on the fly dependent on the amount of gems and the amount of gold traded on the BLTC. If more players are selling gems than buying gems, the value in gold slowly declines, and ther everse is true if more people are buying gems than selling them.

That the price fluctuates so much is very indicative of how many players are using the currency exchange.

I still want an option to say that I’m buying 200 gems, instead of trying to hit the sweet spot and having the prices change on me constantly while I’m doing it.

Yes I know but it wouldn’t register 3s for 1 gem and the exchange rate was never that high. But 5 gems had the same exchange rate, within a copper, of over 200 gems.

It’s as if there is a penalty if you try to get only 1 gem (didn’t try values under 5 gems other than 1).

Elder wood planks also doubled in price over the same period with a similar inversion from demand < supply to demand > supply, but the overall amount is much less.

It’s funny I recently bought some elder wood logs simply because I could use them to turn a quick buck making component pieces such as elder focus casings. Did everybody get the same idea? Is there a lot of players pushing past the rating 275-325 region for artificer this week?

Yep, I bought keys too, during the sale. I spent enough in the cash shop of GW1 to know that if something you think you might need goes on sale – buy it! I hope the revenues generated by the sales keep our world growing and healthy.

The Twitter flash sale on the BL salvage kits did annoy me, but I’m guessing forum the lack of further flash sales that it didn’t go over so well.

One more day left? Black Lion salvage kits. Do it!! You know it will be the highest revenue day of the month

Thanks again for the great work.

Well it is the end of a quarter. Daddy (NCSOFT) needs to look good.

If the devs did publish the entire “sausage making” process of rewards via BLC including all the drop tables and item weights players will still be upset and the discussion will move from RNG to defining how rare rare should be. Or how their reward methodology for chests is “faulty” or “poorly designed”.
