That’s the reason why I’ve suggested among other things, that bows should get a damageboost if you hit someone from above, rewarding you for your positional play.
Furthermore you could remove the damage component from pets (if you’re using a bow), so you wont lose any damage.

Until we get more of commitment that truly no option is off the table, ranger is going to remain a pet focused profession. Perhaps you could work on options that improve the performance of the ranged pet help fit the image of ranger and pet firing squad.

I’ve created my ranger expecting an archer.

Was this because of just the profession’s flavor text? Or because of some other game’s idea of what a ‘Ranger’ is? Please don’t say it was because Ranger has the ‘range’ as the first five letters.

Rangers are “unparalelled archers”.

Probably because of that. And why shouldn’t he?

That paragraph below it detailing ‘Pets’.

So what I am gathering from this is a lot of skimming while reading is going on.
If we are going on the assumption that the flavors text are correct then Warrior will have to remain a better archer as he is a “master of weaponary” and a bow is still a weapon.

Yes, the paragraph below does indeed detail pets. But that does not make the statement that Rangers are “unparalleled archers” suddenly obsolete. He chose the Ranger profession to play an archer because that is what ArenaNet have described it as. Whether or not that description is accurate is completely irrelevant.

Please take your nonconstructive and frankly condescending comments elsewhere. This thread is not the place for them.

You are the one to take it as an attack. I am just saying that taking that much out of the flavor text is setting oneself up for disappointment. When I read the “unparalleled archer” took it as they can equip both longbow and short bow (together it that is your thing) and that eagle eye option existed to give additional distance.

Ranger Design Philosophy: Please keep this in mind when posting feedback.
The Ranger is a resilient profession that excels at skirmishing by drawing from nature to support themselves as well as their allies. Alongside their pet, they have some of the best single target and sustained damage that will whittle their opponents down.

Allie if is isn’t too much of a bother could we perhaps get the exact definition (as the designers are using) for the terms “resilient” and “sustained” as the former is slightly ambiguous and the later is thrown around the forums without clear use.

This could turn into an object lesson of how they can please everyone so they are going to continue on the path that they have chosen and at the same time state we’ve worked with the player base.

They even changed the Rangers description from “unparalleled Archers” to “hard hitting, one target skirmishers” or somesuch kitten

I hope your post will make a difference

Not hard hitting sustained damage, I think they are making it clear that they really have no desire to see any sort of burst from the ranger.

I still want to play an archer and still I get hindered.

That is more of a total game design issue where the developers designed the entire game to work around the sPvP system of maps with 5v5 being the ideal situation so we get PbAoE buffs and the stack on one spot being the safest option. Kind of destroys risk vs reward there.

@Kai
I would understand why it’s GM if quickness was a 100% boost (that would requal 6s of 50% boost) because that would let us use a lot of skills quickly to spike a target. Imagine around 1k hits with the shortbow with 100% boost…. no, that would be overpowered (that’s why it was nerfed)

Short bow as far as I know still does not interact with quickness correctly and has not since the animation ‘fix’.

Rangers NEED to be able to stow pets in certain situations as others have already outlined.

There is no situation in which pets NEED to be stowed, except maybe during jumping puzzles, and that’s more want than need. The only problem is that there are some situations in which they die more often than they are worth, and that is what needs correcting.

If you don’t want a pet out all the time, then you should pick a class that isn’t a Ranger. If you would like to have a pet out all the time, but find that this isn’t ideal because they die too often, or confuse agro in parties, or other such reasons, then the solution is to fix those problems.

The solution I proposed would be to make it so that when a pet “dies” they can continue to deal DPS unaffected, but no longer generate threat, preventing players from “pokemoning” battles, but any similar solution would work as well.

I’d be fine with allowing players to permanently stow their pets, but not if it means making them stronger than a current Ranger with a dead pet is. That would only encentivize them to deliberately stow their pet in combat, and then they might as well just be a different class.

There however is precedence for content to have a no win for the pet (pet can not dodge, pet can not jump, just the pet has no active defense). Sure you can swap, but most mechanic in this game repeat in under a minute so after the first you can be in a pet-less state no matter how well you otherwise manage the pet.

We can not ask the designer to limit their mechanic due to one profession, but we can ask that they work on adjusting the ranger’s class mechanic to exist within the game they are designing for.

Or we need a notice on entering pet unfriendly content and ranger be label an advanced profession as it is likely that a player will need a different character to deal with the short coming of ranger with the pet in the current state.

PvX
Proposal Overview
Spirits need something a bit extra in their design. Spirits lack a unique identity. They possess aspects of minion and banner, but without the functionality of either.

Goal of Proposal
As I understand it spirits are cast right before an engagement and with the summon cast time are a bit of pain in pace of combat. With the cast time of one and half seconds they are a bit of pain in the current pace of combat. These changes would encourage the ranger to use the spirit and its summoning in a more tactical ways other than preemptive summoning.

Proposal Functionality
Spirits could use a bit more buffing potential in the form of the both a proc on hit mechanic that we already see on all but the elite and a passive while the spirit lives like the elite currently has.

Spirit of Nature: After Cast: X condition(s) are cleansed around the ranger. Proc effect: add a % chance on hit to transfer a condition to the target hit.

Spirit of Water: After Cast: heal the ranger and the pet for X or perhaps a brief non-regeneration heal over time. Pulse effect: may have to pulse a brief regeneration boon.

Storm Spirit: After Cast: a call lightning effect. Proc effect (redesign) vulnerability on hit. Pulse effect swiftness.

Stone Spirit: After Cast: quicksand effect. Pulse: Removes cripple and/or immobilize.

Sun Spirit: After Cast: small pbaoe damage and blind. Pulse: short duration might

Frost Spirit After Cast: Frost Armor for x seconds. Pulse: Removes 1 boon from enemies within short-mid radius.

Associated Risks
Spirit retain a certain level of passive effect which seems to annoy a vocal bit of the population. If the up time of the effects from either the After Casts or the Pulse are not well tuned there could be imbalance in either direction (too weak/too strong).

When it takes a few skills from two to three attunements to chain any type of effective attack or defense together, the combined weapon swap becomes 18 seconds or 27 seconds. That’s plain poor planning. Weapon swapping shouldn’t be as easy as engineer kit swapping but it shouldn’t be punished THIS much. Are you joking?

Many classes can get that, is my point. Two cannot. Because our weapon swapping mechanic is different.

F1-4 is ours.

Slippery slop there with the use of the word ‘effective’ that is very subjective in nature as is the assumption you must continually string to skills from different attunements to gain said subjective ‘effectiveness’. I am just stating that the cool down for any other non-warrior profession that possesses the weapon swap mechanic is 9 seconds with a complete rune set and that you stated is a very long time.

Why did it take plain facts to bring up your concept of ‘combined swap’?

So far the only joke here is your arguments. I only point this out because use of deceptive or outright false information will not get any changes made.

Calavel you’re completely off base. They’re in the F1-4 skill slots, but they’re not considered skills.

This is proof because if so, reducing 20% in earth would reduce attunement swap earth. And since they’re not skills like our skill bar skills, they shouldn’t be affected by chill like our skill bar skills.

Should engie toolbelt skills get this change? No! They are real skills with real effects.
Should engie kits get this change? Yes! They are the only wep swapping mechanics they have as well.

Like Ganathar said, every class can trait for effects on swap, and so can ele. Otherwise we get nothing just like everybody else.

Sorry, but I’m still not convinced. I see I was a bit too quick claiming that only warriors can trait for weapon swap effects, I forgot about engineers and thieves and had no idea rangers could trait for it.
But the fact that Attunement is both weapon swapping and class mechanic (traitable for 30% CD reduction like any class mechanic) obviously makes it different from regular weapon swapping. Saying Attunement should be subject to exactly the same effects and limitations as regular weapon swapping doesn’t seem right to me. It’s not exactly the same and it never will be.

I’m not trying to convince you. I’m telling you facts.

Many classes can trait for lower weapon swapping, just as we can trait for lower swapping. But our swaps — still stuck at an incredibly long 9 seconds — aren’t even reduced by much. Sorry, swing and a miss there.

Elementalists are hit doubly hard for our access to extra skills, when our access ALREADY comes at a very, very high price.

You quite obviously do not play ele. 2/10 for effort.

Actually only warrior is lowering the cool down of weapon swapping through traits. It would take a six piece rune set to lower any other non-warrior to 9 second swap that you consider ‘incredibly long’.

Just thought of something this could be a case of designing around the fact that traits exist that give the attunement swaps effects and the chill interaction is there to counterbalance that.

Thanks for that. It helps all of us to understand that our opinions are “invalid”

Glad I could help! Maybe next time, you can come up with a better argument than “Its clunky!”, becuase by that logic, every skill in the game with a cast time is "clunky’

Also, bad opinions, and bad arguments are two totally different things. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how good or bad. But, if your argument sucks, I am going to say something!

I don’t think it is about clunky it is about mechanics and with the exception of Guard all shouts have the same activation time, the cool down is not a factor here.

If risk vs reward was the only case why is it a skill like For Great Justice exists as an instant cast that follows the shout rule, while the ranger with a jungle stalker has mighty roar with a stupidly long cast time and lower up time of buff.

Is is just best that we infer now that any and all ranger options must be exception to mechanics and inferior to non-ranger options.

According to Dulfy those notes are fake. The poster just took the currently known changes to make them look legit and made up the rest.

Not just dulfy, Anet personally stated those notes were fake, something they have never done before now. Meaning it’s most likely fake.

Man…People must really hate Ranger and want this thread locked and trashed? Can we get on topic with things that actually concern Ranger Balance, and not stuff that is obviously fake?

(on a side note, and partially on topic….. Ranger CDI should be started tomorow!)

Just putting out there that while this is not quite the first time on one of the first few Ready Ups they discuss that anything data mined is not in it’s final finished form and was subject to change up to the complete deletion of that content. I think the can of worm there would be anything not previously posted making it way into the fully developed patch.

But that is neither here, nor there at this point this thread has gotten too large and with probably not be review much at all. We will have to see if/when the CDI thread is stated what we can expect.

Pets: should their role be changed?

in Ranger

Posted by: Bran.7425

Bran.7425

That would definitely need to be discussed. I was thinking that in putting those changes in that the increase on pet stats would need to be looked at as the pet in that design shift would no longer need half of the normal main stat, power and precision would be moot.

Then there would be the traits that increase secondary stats (example pet’s prowess of skirmishing) not to mention companion’s might and few other effects.

But if it could be made into a working model (and both the players and designers both agree that it fulfills what ranger is) and the developers are willing to put the necessary working in it then it could work.

Thought driven discussion should have a place on the forum and I thank you for asking me to participate in the discuss, I will check back in with more detail, but now a late lunch beckons me.

[PvP] Ele Balance: Revealing Flames

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Bran.7425

Bran.7425

Honestly this could be a somewhat decent trait, since one of the big reasons why eles don’t like going full glass is to avoid being insta gibbed by a stealth user. They will still die to a breeze and fire will still be lacking in survivability, but at least have a way to counter the back stab other than pray you hit with aoe.

No. It’s a horribly designed trait. Words cannot express how bad it is.

A grandmaster trait must impact a class’ gameplay. They must be significant, feel rewarding and be effective in multiple scenarios.

This trait is not only situational, but it also does it’s job extremely poorly. So what if you cancelled their stealth when attuning to fire? You can’t do it again for 9 seconds minimum, and they can still damage you (especially mesmers). Not to mention how they can re-stealth much faster than you can de-stealth them.

I already said this but against the other 6 classes, even against eles this trait would be complete trash. Even more situational for revealing enemies that are ocasionally stealthed by mesmers or thieves.

You gotta understand that eles are known to work the way they do because of their reliance on water and on second place arcana. It’s as if some traits were already engraved into eles gameplay. If you plan on giving those traits up, then the reward / tradeoff should at the very least come on par. You lose a LOT of defense and survivability (even damage), then you should get a lot of power in return, or at least something other than a pathetic and situational reveal.

Sorry but I don’t think any decent elementalist could rate this trait idea as ‘mediocre’, not even that adjective would cut it.

blah blah blah water blah blah arcana

Situational is how skill cap builds work. It doesn’t make it weak.

He gave valid points on how this trait will not work. You give him “blah blah blah”. Yep, this discussion is going somewhere.

sorry should of been more patient with him.

Any suggestion that a comment is ‘ill-conceived’ gets my posts deleted..

must be nice to the pve players ><

Why? There are many pointlessly weak grand master (master traits as well) across all the profession, many of which are only at the current tier as the one below them already had too many option (not to mention that originally they did have them separated by tiers). You might be able to work your trait into the Sunspots master minor not sure it the developer would go for it, but that would make it a bit more accessible, but I am not sure that reveal as it is now is really working as well as it was intended. Maybe it is one of those baby steps kind of adjustments.

Way to pick and choose what I said, and clearly you don’t know the class at all if I don’t know it well. Quick Breathing, warhorn in general is hardly used outside of WvW zerging and even then most builds don’t invest the 20 points for the trait. It’s also not something you can control reliably. Not everyone uses Vulnerability, and even then most of the time you end up getting more vigor than anything else. The duration is also not that long on top of that. I’ve tried many times to make Warhorn work but in the end I would rather have those points in Defense since you can’t afford to have points in both if you want to actually kill something.

Also, Whirlwind Attack is the ONLY source of Evade Warriors have and it’s on a pretty mediocre weapon. Not to mention I said “very little to no,” not just no. One evade every 10 seconds doesn’t make a Warrior a Thief all of the sudden. Basically, you’re argument is flimsy as hell and your examples are as well.

Why so hostile? It really comes across to ‘I want all the options, without giving up anything’ so very much if it does not stay over-tuned it won’t work for you. Look on the bright side the passive effect on Signet of Stamina is one of the few endurance recoveries that are not on the chopping block like so many others across all the professions.
Just because you do not run/like an option does not mean it doesn’t exist. All and all it could always get worse, the developer could destroy the condition meta that gave rise to the current state of many profession and I wonder which one would be the first to get re-tooled….

I am just here for discussion, and I don’t really have dog it this fight, so I am really just trying to understand what is going on with this profession and it’s vocal supporters.

I listed the source so people could criticize it, it’s not like it’s a reliable one. I have no idea if these are real or not. What really gave it away when I read it was the HS regen nerfed with 8% without the active being upped. However, these changes will most likely come into effect. Maybe not this patch, but soon. And we will have to deal with it. Just a sneakpeak on what we will become.

That reduction on the passive without the active being adjusted is far from the giveaway there as I really doubt they have found a balance change that would make using the signets active worth-while.

I feel like they keep caving in to the forum/E-Sports crowd way more than they should. Not that good ideas don’t occasionally come from those groups, it’s just that throwing them all into one patch leaves so many ways for things to go wrong.

I would much prefer a small balance patch every 2 weeks than one giant one every few months. That way if the Healing Signet nerf alone wasn’t enough THEN you take away the regen from Dogged March. Not to mention that supposedly big rune changes are coming and if Lyssa gets hit hard then Warrior’s sustain will take another big hit.

I’m looking at running something like this if these notes are true. Not really sold on Bolas and I may end up needed Signet of Stamina but this will let me still throw down a lot of control just in a different form. Also, with the buff to Shield Master and with Dolyak Signet I’ll have some good toughness even with Zerker gear (shame those bonuses don’t stack with Armored Attack). Between that and having a block hopefully I’ll maintain decent sustain. The problem is I won’t be able to deny stomps as often with no hammer.

EDIT: I guess one benefit is that we’ll hopefully get less people overblowing how powerful Warrior is…but then again probably not. Some won’t be satisfied until we’re back to being free kills like at launch.

So not total destruction mode yet….

Good God, I am SO tired of responding to these kinds of statements.

YOU CANNOT DIRECTLY COMPARE TWO TRAITS/SKILLS/ATTACKS ON TWO DIFFERENT CLASSES!

Each class has many different factors to take into consideration when talking about balance. For example, Warrior’s have high HP/Toughness/Regen but have very little to no access to Protection/Evades/Stealth/Etc. Something that’s balanced on one class would be wildly OP if it was the same on another class. Comparisons like yours prove nothing when talking about balance.

Why not when all you can say is I am not broken they [other professions] have protection, stealth, or evades. You don’t even know your own profession that well

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Quick_Breathing Oh look there protection, where according to you there is none.

And yet again http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Whirlwind_Attack, evades where did that come from.

So if I understand you correctly you all those exactly the same traits (same trait same tier) across all the profession are in fact not balanced, but warrior can have a better version of a trait at a lower expenditure of trait points and that is ok.

I for one am just as time of, but it won’t be warrior if it…. doesn’t get be over-tuned.

It needs more support way, which mesmer lacks a lot. If you want condition on auto attack, just use staff. What mesmer lacks is boon providing. Signet of inspiration only helpful when you have boons from your allies. The only boon generator for mesmer is bountiful interruption and its not enough.

Also, the problem is not only for AA. Other skills more likely designed for spvp/tpvp way. Scepter lacks mobility and lack of that mobility should be supported by defensive approach.

There are boons on this weapon, and… this trait http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Prismatic_Understanding
generates boons.

Maybe you could be a bit clearer in what you are wanting instead of presenting partial information (oh I see what you did there you are being deception clever mesmer).

Just because this can’t be said enough:
Shout
A shout is a skill type that generally affects a wide area. Certain shouts give bonuses to allies while others can be used to debuff enemies. Shouts have an instant cast time and may be used during other skills.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Shout

Guard 1 Activation time 15 Recharge time
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/%22Guard%22

So guard is shout with a activation time, not really a shout then.

If SotW healed as well as Healing Signet and we still had access to a normal heal, we’d be unkillable in anything other than zerg situations.

If 5500 healing power was possible then Signet of the Wild would be just as strong, but as it stands to get Regeneration to that strength requires 2096 so…

But bring up warrior does nothing to help the discussion of ranger and the changes that we are, if past patch note leaks are to be believed, unavoidable.

Maybe they are hoping the greatsword wielding rangers will equip a sigil of nullifaction in that extra slot two-handed weapons are getting.

All and all I think we really need to have a talk with the developers on what the word “amazing” means. Then again I am almost amazed (mostly stating to get used to this level of explicit) at how bad these patch notes are so maybe my point is moot.

The way that the eagle eye trait change is worded the might stacking would completely replace what the trait once did.

First of potentially many post on idea I had been toying around with for a while now.

1- Spirits
I think that spirit need some thing a bit extra in there design as they have a lack of unique identity. As I understand it spirits are mostly cast right before and engagement and with the summon cast time are a bit of pain in pace of combat.

So to address this I was thinking that there should be an effect that goes off at the end of the cast that would encourage the ranger to use the spirit and it summoning in a more tactical way. With the second and a half cast time there would be count play as the ranger ‘glows’ spirit related colors during summoning. So think encourages additional need for timely well thought out interrupts, like do I want to let that ranger get out that spirit or should I save it for the heal that will be coming soon.

Spirit of Nature: after the cast completes X condition are cleanse around the ranger.
Spirit of Water: after the cast complete heal the ranger and the pet for X or perhaps a brief non-regeneration heal over time.
Storm Spirit: Not sure what else to do besides a call lightning effect (lightning as a effect group is kind of odd at best)
Stone Spirit: Also not sure if a repeat of quicksand is a good after cast finish as that style effect is very prevalent on the ranger right now.\
Sun Spirit: after the cast complete perhaps a small aoe bit of damage and a pbaoe blind.
Frost Spirit after the cast complete grants Frost Armor for x seconds.

Secondly I was thinking that the spirits could use a bit more buffing potential in the form of the both a proc on hit mechanic that we already see on all but the elite and a passive while the spirit lives like the elite currently has.

Spirit of Nature add a % chance proc on hit to transfer a condition to the target hit. Place an appropriate internal cool down and it shouldn’t be too strong.
Spirit of Water: (water being a limited effect) may have to pulse a brief regeneration boon. (alternatively it provide a buff to healing power and/or boon duration instead)
Storm Spirit: Redesign the proc to stack vulnerability on hit and have it pulse swiftness
Stone Spirit: (earth is a bit limited in effect range like water) So I am not sure what to pulse (there is falling back on the idea of buffing vitality and/or toughness of those nearby)
Sun Spirit: Added pulsing small amount of might (short duration)
Frost Spirit: pulsing frost armor (short durations moderate interval might work)

Wow, this is huge for us.

And probably all we are going to get in a positive way, I expect the following patch to cut the pet damage again as the skills going off ‘breaks’ spvp

When did we become " OP"?

Warriors are masters of weaponry who rely on speed, strength, toughness, and heavy armor to survive in battle. Adrenaline fuels their offensive power the longer warriors stay in a fight, the more dangerous they become.”

Don’t bring up the class flavor text descriptions as they are not a good argument at best and at worst just gets into nitpicking about in this case what ‘master’ means, or anyother vague terms that the description might invoke.

Cause Healing Signet and ultra high stats. With full zerk u can get 3k armour 20k hp tell me thats not op.

U really need to get out more.
healing signet makes us “OP”?…really…guess the regeneration boon also makes people “OP” then.

Full zerker does not give u 3K armor….just saying
BTW…warrior stats has not changed since day 1 of this game…why is it a big deal now?

Only if the regeneration is not removable and someone with 2096 healing power. That is without adrenal health being brought into the mix.

To kill the zerg, make several event happens at same time, and no mobs drop loot on death, but the progress of rescues and events won creates a zone progress and graded loot chest popups, also cap each event to max of certain mobs.

Then players would have to split up for better loot, now event are maxed out so over attendance does nothing extra, mob tagging is not a significant factor either, then you encourage zerg across the whole map.

That actually IS how Lions’ Arch Under Attack works. You are given increasingly better rewards the better you do, and the way to get the best score is to split up, break the zerg, and focus on zone coverage.

The only way it could be MORE inclined to break up the zerg is if those rewards were the ONLY rewards you got… and by God could you imagine the incendiary fury in this forum if THAT was the case?

No it is more inclined for the Zergs to go back to champ trains and less will get done. There would be no fury they would just move on and the events would be over-tune for the size of the groups trying to deal with them.

As long as the pet is AI controlled the “pug community” will not like pets.

Doing it through shouts that are not instant? Dufaq are you smoking? How shouts areN’T instant cast is beyond me as it is…

I"m not holding my breath. There has been no implentation of anything from the 1st round CDIs so…. Yeah, no. I’ll continue to lose interest in GW2 as a whole because they refuse to give me the option to perma-stow-for-buff or something similar an admittedly band-aided class mechanic.

Besides, the riding weather is here in the South so just means my motorcycle will demand to be ridin more often!

The ranger shouts only share some of the mechanics of shout and got lumped in with them as a result. Look at elementalist cantrips they are basically shouts mechanically except they do not interact with runes of the soldier.
