CHIPS.6018

As for the topic, lore is very important. It keeps things in prospective. Lore is what gives the story room to grow.

I am not offended by the likes of holographic wings. Yes they made no sense, but they are obviously just for looks. If they give us the option to turn them off, so we don’t see them on other players, it would be fine.

What does offend me are the lore breaking stuffs. Take Kraits for example.

To a point but i do not play mmorpg for lore its just nice to have an ok story there. Mmorpgs for me is more about playing with other ppl when i played ff11 i had no ideal what was going on in that game but i enjoyed it because of the ppl i played with and i love there skill-chain system.
For realty good lore and stores its best to keep with single players games or at least games made to be played alone with online drop in. When you add another person in person or adding in a lot of ppl into a game it takes a lot away from the story because the story is not what the game is telling you its the story your making with the ppl your playing with.

You will find more GW1 players who where big time into lore tend to play the game solo or used it like a drop in game and not an mmorpg that every one keeps trying to forces GW1 to fit into (its was not an mmorpg so there are just simply truth that could and could not be done with it).

For your information, it is physically impossible for you to have a “story” with the people you play with.

Why?

You are the solo commander of the Pact, TreeHero’s right hand man.
The people you played with are also all the solo commander of the Pact, TreeHero’s right hand man.

You cannot possibly exist in the universe of the people you played with. Neither can they exist in yours.

So you and them playing together was purely a game play mechanic. That didn’t actually happen in the story.

Do I like this system? Nope. GW1 was much better. And it was simple:

GW1: You are all Chosen. You are all Closer to the Star. You are all Ascended.
GW2: You and you alone is TreeHero’s right hand man.

Small wording. Big difference.

I am glad to see that most people agree with me. ^^

i like vertical progresion are u kiding me 5 years from now u gona use the same weapons ? for real ? u not gona get bored whit the same statc and same dmg numbers get real need more lvl’s need beter gear but not the way ascended is made thac just pure epic grind fest

I feel bored when I am forced to run the same build over and over again because I am stuck with my current gear. This happens when it is too expensive/time consuming to get a new set of gear for my new envisioned build.

In GW1 it takes me 2 minutes to switch my build.
In GW2 it takes me 3 months to switch my build (from one ascended gear to another set).

And this is just one character. We can also talk about alt-characters. They all need one ascended set. And then if we want to try something else and switch its build… >_>

Surely most people sees a huge problem with this design.

Time Gate Ascended Mats, like or dislike?

CHIPS.6018

Absolutely hate it. If you have the money, it’s still extremely easy to obtain it on the spot while the casual players are punished because they don’t have the time to dedicate themselves to one game. It also locks you into one build in a supposedly “horizontal” progression mmo with the sheer amount of time and mats required to complete it.

I wouldn’t call myself a casual player but the 36 days I spent struggling to get my armor will soon mean little without the right reimbursement.

Edit: Not counting my accessories I got 8 pieces of ascended equipment on my necromancer and 1 on my guardian.

I got to agree with this.

In GW1 it takes me 2 minutes to switch my build.

Counter the Miasma gas?

What feasible ways are there to counter the miasma gas, so the Pact can sent troops inside LA safely?

My guess:
Asura geniuses suddenly invented poison gas masks. (Asuran Sues saves the day again!)

My hope:
The Pact attacks underwater though submarines. The Miasma gas cannot enter the water.

Time for a Lionguard Regime Change *spoilers*

in Lore

CHIPS.6018

Well it has been noted in-game that the other cities are oddly absent, in terms of major support.

Charr don’t give a kitten about fighting humans. Infact, the only ones they really were annoyed at was Ebonhawke, and by the time of Kralk’s emergance, it was only Iron Legion (and even then, a select few warbands as I recall) maintaining the siege. With the treaty, neither side has ANY reason to actually wage war on each other. The loss in manpower wouldn’t benefit them as then they’d have to defend two LARGE territories against a variety of enemies. Centaurs, Flame Legion, ghosts, bandits/Seraph remnants. It’s not worth it, even IF they held onto the grudges (which they show no sign of).

War is not logical. Besides I find how well everyone gets along to be rather suspicious… (and boring from a purely narrative perspective).

Besides the Charr war-machine needs resources to wage a war. If the Charr or Divinity’s Reach were to help take LA back they’d also be in a position to help rebuild. Since LA was a major trading hub it stands to reason once it’s rebuilt it might be again, anyone who helped to rebuild would be in a better position to benefit.

Evon Gnashblade has actually stated his displeasure in how the Lionguard performed, stating that the Charr would have been better. If the Charr were to help regain LA from the Scarlet Alliance, Evon would be in a good position to place himself on the Captains Council and in turn send some favours in the Charrs direction.

Divinity’s Reach (so close but so absent, probably building up military force?) could also benefit. Humans are no longer the top dogs, Divinity’s Reach is busy fighting the centaurs, and might still be rebuilding after Scarlet’s attack. With the current captains council make up (4 human, 2 Asura, 1 Norn, 1 charr) there might potentially be a leaning towards human-sympathizing, meaning that if LA was to be recaptured by the Seraphs then Divinity’s Reach might be able to reap the benefit.

Yes, send in the Panzers.

Well for many people the Krait thing is lore breaking, because one of their traits is xenophobia. Its true that they think of themselfes as the higher race, and they think that they didn’t need the help of others.

One of their other traits is that they are religious fanatics, and they would do everything to make the return of their prophets possible.

Xenophobia doesn’t mean they will never deal with other species. They’re just highly distrustful of non-Krait. Scarlet got their aid by appealing to the religious fanaticism. She had some “holy relics” of their Prophet faith that they badly wanted, and I believe she held up her end of the bargain, giving them the shards.

Also, these are not the entire Krait race. Just a splinter group that apparently took a chance on Scarlet, like with the Dredge, Flame Legion, Inquest and Nightmare Court.

Actually Kraits never worked alongside another race before. Scarlet was the first non-krait that they ever worked with.

From official wiki:

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Krait

“These intelligent creatures are vicious and xenophobic, attacking and enslaving all other species on sight.

“They believe other, lesser races have nothing to offer them, so the krait never bother to communicate with them. Never beaten, they are convinced that they are blessed and elevated: the superior species in the world. "

Back to topic:

So by lore, it is easier for Scarlet to “sweet talk” the Pact into joining her, than sweet talking the Kraits into joining her.

Read what I just wrote again. Take it in. :P

Why is that? Well the Pact (e.g. me and you) will at least give her 5 minutes to listen to what she have to say. The Kraits will try to enslave Scarlet on sight. That’s how the lore was set up.

So for this part of the story to make any sense, the story writer need to prove that Scarlet have god like “sweet talking” abilities to get the Kraits into joining her.

Problem is, we have never seen this “sweet talking” ability of Scarlet. Every time we see Scarlet she appeared as an insane chick. All her underlings are more serious than her. Aetherblade flat out said they follow her because they are afraid of her (e.g. not sweet talking).

If the writer want to prove that Scarlet is a sweet talker, they have to prove it. And so far, they did zero proving.

As for obelisks, LOL ok think about it. Scarlet stole your obelisk from your old home. Would you work for her? No!!! You will try to kill Scarlet and take the obelisk back from her. Its simple logic.

And Krait themselves were forced out of their old homes by the elder sea dragon. On land, they were attacked by Zhaitan’s risen army. So why would they help Scarlet raise the elder jungle dragon in LA?

The whole story is build around the mystery. The authors focused so much on the “new mystery”, instead of existing lore, that they broke a few lores along the way. Kraits were the prime example.

By this point very few players even care about the “mystery” anymore. They care a lot more about the old lore that was broken.

And the “mystery” is nothing more than Mordremoth awakening. It isn’t even that big of a deal. We knew this will happen from before the release of the game.

Triple Threat (why its bad).

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: CHIPS.6018

CHIPS.6018

I am talking about 1 of the achievements.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Escape_from_Lion%27s_Arch_

Over the past few days I had done LA many times. I started from all 3 exits. I am currently at 12/15 of the achievements. I still have Aetherblade Broken and Memories in Your Hand to do. However I only have a problem with Triple Threat.

Triple Threat 10 Arenanet Points
Prevent the Aetherblades, the Toxic Alliance, and the Molten Alliance from opening their miasma canisters in the same deployment cycle

Ok this achievement doesn’t sound that hard. You just have to get lucky, and find a run where the group was organized enough to stop all 3 miasma canisters.

However this quest sums up all the problems with game design.

The mobs takes way too long to kill. They have way too much HP. Stopping the miasma canisters becomes an DPS test. And this has been complained many times by many players. Players with zerker gears shouldn’t be the all and be all.

At the same time the action in another canister have NOTHING to do with the player. He isn’t even there. So why is the success of this achievement dependant on something that’s totally out of the players control? This achievement is all about luck (e.g. happen to stumble upon an organized group) than anything.

Some people may say “Get Organized” in the overflow. Valid argument in the main server. However let’s get real there is no organization possible in overflows. I don’t know about the other players. But I ended up in overflows like 70-80% of the time.

-DPS test
-Reward out of the players’ control, so it is all about luck (happen to stumble upon a good group).
-Can’t organize in overflows.

How will any future villain counter Scarlet?

in Living World

Posted by: CHIPS.6018

CHIPS.6018

Well Elona has a villain who is far superior to Scarlet – Palawa Joko.
But as for Villains in Tyria, I don’t think they have to top Scarlet. Something can still pose a threat and not be quite as dangerous as her – a threat is still a threat. It’s not like we’ll go – oh well Scarlet was harder to beat than them so lets just not bother.

Isn’t that the explanation for why almost all of Tyria ignored Scarlet for a year until she destroyed Lion’s Arch? People defended the story by saying she’s not an Elder Dragon, the Orders, the different races, the Pact, Destiny’s Edge – they all have more important things to do than deal with Scarlet. It was a very small cast of characters (that became most obvious during Marionette) that bothered to pay attention to Scarlet. The Orders and other forces in Tyria had a token presence, but for the most part people were ignoring her.

I agree Palawa Joko is a superior villain to Scarlet, but in terms of effectiveness (I don’t believe Scarlet’s list of accomplishments are believable in the scope of Tyria, they relied on convenience and stupidity) Scarlet has everyone beat. It’s a real problem that exists in Tyria now.

We have to move forward knowing that Scarlet did what a primordial force tried and failed to do and we have not one alliance, but three with superior technology that outclasses what came before it.

Oh yes. The idiot ball is strong with the Pact and allies. This whole story can be sum up by:

Our allies are unbelievably stupid, our enemies are unbelievably strong and high tech, and Scarlet is unbelievably charismatic.

CHIPS.6018

She forged a large alliance, but who is to say that alliance is the most powerful force of evil that could be raised or that this is the most diabolical plan that could be hatched?

It’s not that the Alliances might be powerful, but SHE MANAGED to bring enemies together to form an Alliance. Enemies that would be hard to bring together.

Yes. And to make it even weirder, she then proceeded to bring the alliances together as well. Suddenly, you have krait fighting side by side with the dredge and no explanation for it whatsoever.

Oh, and then there’s the fact that she’s been throwing away her troops against us for months and still she has enough left to takeover Lion’s Arch. Even without the ‘players need numbers’ explanation it doesn’t make sense. I mean, the ones that joined her were splintr groups. How many dredge are there in the world if even a small fraction of them is enough to take over Lion’s Arch after months of suffering losses?!

Krait is indeed the most lore breaking part of this whole story. I don’t think Anet or anyone can fix this breach. Its probably better to forget about this part of the story.

As for LA, it was the poison gas that’s prevent the Pact from entering the city. I doubt Scarlet’s forces can take on the Pact head on.

CHIPS.6018

Correct me if I’m wrong, but there isn’t a Light/Medium/Heavy version of the backpiece right?

Just craft it with a character who is an armorsmith or leatherworker. Problem solved there. You don’t need to do it with a tailor.

What if tailoring is all I got? This event is time limited and it is way too late to start levelling up leatherwork now.

The event may be time limited, but the construction of the item isn’t. Make sure you have the gift of blades recipe and the blue prints before the event is over and you can make the back piece at your own pace.

Yeah I think I will craft it when prices comes down. Here is the checklist of the time limited items that are needed. Can someone confirm that this is correct?

-Advanced Spinal Blades (finish this before event ends)
-500 Blade Shards (Gift of Blades cost 250. And then Tempered Spinal Blades costs 250.)
-Recipe: Gift of Blades

The rest can be obtained later on.

Now comes GW2, mesmer kept their ability to cause confusion. Necro, on the other hand, have almost zero kitten to confusion. I think there are only 2 ways:

1: Spectral Wall+Staff 1 (way to situational)

Write your own Scarlet.

in Lore

Posted by: CHIPS.6018

CHIPS.6018

If I were to write a villain, I would make him/her a character that could just as easily be one of the heroes in under slightly different circumstances. That’s because straight out evil villains are boring to me, and so are villains that are just crazy. Being mad is such a weak excuse for someone to be evil. I prefer characters that are sort of gray. That goes for the heroes of the story too. I like the idea of having heroes that are not infallible. Heroes that could become the villains if they go too far. That’s why a character such as Logan Thackery is so utterly boring to me. There is no dark side to him, not even a hint. He’s the good guy through and through. Apart from a devotion to Jennah, that’s all there is to him. How dull.

But imagine stepping up the writing just a little bit, and taking the character out of it’s comfort zone. Logan could be made into a character whose devotion to Jennah borders on the fanatical. Suddenly the character becomes a whole lot more interesting. But currently the story takes no risks.

I feel the same about Scarlet. She’s mad, and she’s evil. Up till now, that’s all we got from her, and we’re not shown any good side of the character. So how are we as players expected to empathize with the character if she’s so purely black hat?

Yes yes yes! So much yes!

I hate perfect heroes and perfect villains. Both are equally boring. I too love grey characters.

Heroes in shiny armour are boring. Heroes with their own internal struggles and are borderline villain themselves are much more interesting.

Villains that just wants power and money are boring. Villains with a valid purpose is much more interesting.

Bumping threads is against the forum rules, I wouldn’t recommend doing it again.

As for your suggestion, I think something like this could work to make objective defense more important, but this needs some flavor and most of all clear phsyically visible and tactile cues to make sure players know what to do.

Yeah I got 1 Infraction Point for that. I didn’t know about this new rule they got. I used to bump threads and never got infraction points.

Do you know how many infraction points until I get banned?

CHIPS.6018

This thread is to make your own Scarlet. Your new story must be somewhat related to the game play that we have seen. The goal is to make a Scarlet that is believable the fits the game play perfectly.

Here is mine. ^^

Scarlet was a normal Sylvari engineer who was hired to work on the first airship prototype. She was very good with with what she does, and she got many idea on improving the prototype. However the Asuras rarely let non-asuras intervene with weapon design, so they all ignored her. All her ideas were hence kept inside.

(These idea will eventually allow her to build that giant drill that can fly.)

One evening, a senior member of the airship project came and kidnapped her during her sleep. In reality he was a crazy Asuran scientist with a mad interest in the Eternal Alchemy.

He forced Scarlet to enter the Eternal Alchemy. And “what Scarlet saw” was what she saw…

Scarlet returned, killed that mad Asuran, destroyed his machine, and left the airship project. She will not be seen again until a few years later.

No one knows who Scarlet was. She was a nobody.

Scarlet returns when Queen Jennah were hiring engineers to build new weapons called Watchknights. The humans aren’t as racist as the Asuras, and they quickly took in the talented Scarlet. She became one of the top project managers. Because the Watchknight project was a top secret, no one outside knew who Scarlet was.

(Scarlet had secretly changed the Watchknights into her Twisted Clockworks, without anyone else noticing.)

In a time unknown, Scarlet had talked with members of Flame Legion, Dredge, Aetherblades, Nightmare Court and Inquest. Though a mix of fear and sweet talk, she made the alliances that we seen today. However, other than Aetherblades, none of them works directly for her. She only made them ally with each other, and then leave them be.

(In her later invasion of LA, only the Twisted Cloackworks and Aetherblades would join. These are the only 2 factions that works directly under her. )

The Kraits never joined Scarlet. The Tower of Nightmares never ever happened. There is no hybrid. Scarlet cannot do hybrids. She is an engineer. She do not know biology or magic.

Proposal Overview

I believe the map system in the game “Heroes and Generals” is very well done. It have a very detailed supply line links between towns and outposts. GW2 should adopt this system, for both World Events and WvW.

Goal of Proposal

Battles are often won by outflanking the enemy and cutting off their supply line. I believe that GW2 can in-cooperate this strategic aspect into the game play.

I have 2 goals:
1)Break up the zerg mentality. You zerg will lose if a small 5 man havoc team cut off your supplies.
2) Introduce strategy when fighting humans in WvW and mobs in World Events.

Proposal Functionality

1) If the players hold an area, but lose their supply line for over 5 minutes, the supplies inside the area will start dropping. Once that reach zero, the players will suffer a 5% hp lost per second. In 5 more minutes, this will increase to 10% hp per second. This will force them to come out of the area and try to re-establish the supply line.
2) And hence, the players must leave behind a small team to guard their supply lines, just like real life. Else, they may be forced to leave an area due to lack of supplies.
3) The players will need to select a “general” to oversee the whole operation. He (or a group) will need to ensure the players’ supply lines are maintained while cutting the enemies’ supply lines.

Associated Risks
1) Not every player of GW2 are a RTS fan. So initially they may view this new change negatively.
2) The strategy aspect maybe too hard for the current mob AI to handle. A new employee (formerly worked for a RTS) may need to be hired to work on the AI.

@ Orpheal.8263

Please don’t take this the wrong way, but let me say this. If you enjoy grinding so much, why not go play another MMO that requires hours of grinding every day? There are tons of them out there.

I will repeat why I enjoyed GW1.

GW1 was never designed for you to play for 5+ hours everyday, for the next 7 years. And since this is my preferred method of gaming, I hope GW2 goes the same route.

You have to understand that in GW1, I have 10 alt characters with maxed level and maxed equipment. I actually had more than 10 but a few got deleted, but that’s beside the point. And I DIDN’T need to play 5+ hours a day to get it. Every time a new expansion comes, I just pick whoever character I want to play and go right in to enjoy myself.

I never had to grind AT ALL. I played all 10 professions to various degree. I had at least a basic understanding of all 10 professions, and a few that I was very good with.

The rest of my spare time are spent playing other games. FPS, sPRG, RTS, etc. And this was perfectly fine. I would often go Missing in Action for a few weeks and then come back. GW1 NEVER FAILED for me, even when I go Missing in Action.

Many players are the in the boat as me. Amount having alt characters, expansions, and caual play, GW1 have survive for a good SEVEN YEARS and still have many loyal fans.

The only reason why I don’t play GW1 right now is because there isn’t an expansion/new release to GW1.

Now let’s talk about today.

My current GW2 main character have full exotic armour and weapon, with fully ascended accessories. When the new ascended armor was release, I DIDN’T bother with it. I actually have enough money to get it. But I refuse to craft them. Why? Because there is no way I am spending my “life” savings on a few extra stat points.

I will play this game until my old exotic armour is no longer good enough to keep my alive, and then I will play another game.

And so when even “ascended armour” is overpriced to me, it is pointless to try to convince me to agree that “ascended armour+1” is awesome. Because they way I see it, it is just another armour set that I will never get.

Again, let me put bluntly the differences between GW1 and GW2, in terms of being alt friendly.

In GW1, I had 10 alt characters that all got maxed level and equipment.
In GW2, I DO NOT even have 1 character that got max level and equipment.

The alt friendliness of GW1 is AT LEAST 10 times better than GW2, if not MUCH more. So any suggestions to make this even worst will be flatly rejected by people like myself.

Hope you understand now why it is pointless to try to convince people like me that GW2 should be a grinding MMO. You can say it “isn’t a grind” or “the grind isn’t that bad” all you want. It wouldn’t matter. I want the “zero grind” system of GW1, where “player skills” and “player experience” shrines instead of “playing more often”.

Player Skills & Player Experience >>>>>>>>>> Playing more often

This is the MAIN OBJECTIVE of GW1. And this is the theory on MMOs that I will stand by.

Once again please don’t take this the wrong way. But I would politely ask you to please just go join another MMO that requires grinding. If not, please stay and support the MAIN OBJECTIVE of GW1 so it lives on in GW2.

A proposal should try to not reference another game in making a statement for why something is needed in this game. Because X has this then Y needs it. Would be a better proposal if you left out the GW1 part, and showed why playing GW2 it needs what the proposal is stating.

Your proposal makes a very valid point but you should edit it to not have base the statement on that GW1 had it and it worked so GW2 needs it. GW2 is a different game that just happens to share the lore with GW1, should be treated as such. Saying something like how GW2 having more skills would provide more build opportunities which would lead to characters feeling different compared to others would be a great point.

Just a thought, either way choice is yours on if you want to reword the proposal. I fully support more weapons/skills.

Most of my fond memories of build design came from GW1. It would be hard for me to explain without mentioning GW1. ^^

What are those cloth thingies covering the characters’ backs in that video? And where can I get one of those cloth thingies for my characters in this game?

Living World vs Lore

There are so many things wrong with Scarlet. Many has been listen by Konig already. The worst part is how she got the Kraits to work for her. The Kraits believes that they are far superior than any other race and do not need anything from anyone. They will kill or enslave anything they see on sight. It was never explained why they would even talk to Scarlet for more than 10 seconds.

Scarlet: Hi Kraits! I got this thing that……..
Krait: I KILLZZZ YOUUUZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!

Later on this was passed as a trick on Scarlet’s part. She somehow tricked the Kraits into working for her with the promises of bringing the prophets back. Let’s assume that the kraits are dumb enough to trust her and this is what happened (very unlikely, mind you). Well guess what the Tower of Nightmare project failed big time. That so called prophet (a krait/sylvari hybrid) was simply a priests who got “genetically, magically” modified. He isn’t a prophet, who are supposed to “return” from somewhere. And this krait hybrid was killed as soon as it was completed. And the Tower of Nightmare destroyed.

Ok all is finished then right? The Krait must have figured out that Scarlet is all lies by now right? Wrong! The Kraits join the rest of Scarlet’s minions and attacked LA with them!

Biggest WTF in history.

This brings me to my next point. One of the thing about Scarlet that, to me, didn’t make sense is how she went from an engineer to a bio magic weapon specialist.

Scarlet, being an engineer, should be limited to the benefits and weaknesses of being an engineer. That means good with technological and energy weapons, but not good with other things. Scarlet helped the weapons of Molten Alliance. That was ok. Their weapons seems to be some sort of exo-skeleton. So it is technology related.

The Krait/Sylvari hybrid isn’t a exo-skeleton. It is a genetic modification, magically imbue-ment, etc. There is no way, by lore, that Scarlet would know how to do this. She never studied biology, and she isn’t even a mage.

Think of a Gundam mecha designer. Suddenly this guy also made the C-Virus. >_>

The only explanation from this point is that Scarlet DIDN’T do anything to help the development of the hybrid. The hybrid is only the work of the Krait and Nightmare Court. Ok let’s say that’s is true. But now we have another problem. If that is true, then why would the Nightmare Court and the Kraits attack LA under Scarlet?

Remember the Tower of Nightmare project failed. So the Kraits knew they had been lied to. The Nightmare Court, heck I never figured out what stake they got in this whole thing.

Zombies are immune to miasma?

in Lore

Posted by: CHIPS.6018

CHIPS.6018

This is another joke thread that has nothing to do with the story.

Right now we can still enter LA here and there. However the the gas fully fills up LA, we have no way of entering that city anymore. LA will be a no man zone, except for Scarlet’s minions who seems to have taken antidotes.

So the only way is to sent something immune to the miasma gas to fight for us. And the solution is zombies.

Example 1:

Supposed the Pact captures a 1000 risen from Arah, and then airship them into LA. These risens will randomly kill anyone they see, which by this point are only Scarlet minions. This will hopefully weaken Scarlet’s troops, enough that the Pact can sent a Spec-Ops team into LA to destroy these miasma machines once and for all.

Examples 2:

Maybe this would be a great time for Livia to return to help the Pact. She may be able to summon 1000 mindless zombies. And then Queen Jennah and Anise, though mind control magic, would allow the players to temporarily take control of these mindless zombies. The zombies are immune to miasma and though them the Pact can destroy the miasma machines.

This is pretty much Scarlet Invasions 2.0

It doesn’t really matter if a split and coordinated force can save a lot more citizens.
If bonus rewards are not clearly superior to the amount of extra bags a player can get from mass tagging on upscaled events, people will just zerg and/or focus on missing achievements.

If ANet wants to discourage zerging, they need to start looking at the loot system and how it interacts with event scaling.

I think they just need to remove drops from killing mobs. Instead, all rewards are given out instantly when the players achieve the main objective. They can add MANY levels of reward so they are all within reach of each other. These baby steps will encourage the players to play the game like how Anet envisioned it to be.

25 refugees escaped. Reward!
50 refugees escaped. Reward!
75 refugees escaped. Reward!
100 refugees escaped. Reward!
125 refugees escaped. Reward!
etc

What needs to be removed is the loot from mobs spawned by events (and grant a fixed and reasonable reward at event completion), or at least from any extra mob spawned by event scaling.
Some people is going to zerg because they like it, and even if not the best approach for the activity, there’s no problem on rewarding them for their effort.
What needs to be avoided is the zerg gameplay giving the best rewards even when it’s
counterproductive for the intended end goal (stopping an invasion, saving as many people as possible, …).

Regular mobs, which don’t scale and are next to nothing for a zerg (they don’t have enough HP for a lot of people to even tag them), should keep some drop to make them on par whith events.

Even if having the biggest part of the reward tied to the amount of citizens saved (be it through more reward tiers, as you suggest, or directly on the end reward chest) might sound perfect, it encourages A LOT of AFK farming, so it probably should stay as low as it currently is (except maybe for the top scores, unlikely to happen with too many afkers).

Actually, if there are tons of AFKers, the group have no chance at the event rewards. And since the event kicks them out afterwards, they have to keep moving their characters back inside LA and then AFK again. After a while, it isn’t truly AFK anymore.

i wish people would read the patch notes at least and try to know what they’re talking about. copy-pasta from patch notes:

  • Coordinate to stop three miasma deployments simultaneously to earn the Triple Threat achievement, which awards 10 Spinal Shards and bonus loot.
  • Rescue enough citizens and work together with the entire map to earn five tiers of rewards.
  • As players surpass each tier, contributors are rewarded Spinal Shards, Refugee’s Belongings, and Found Heirlooms.
  • Tiers are set at 100, 300, 600, 1000, and 1500 citizens rescued.
  • Those who remain until the miasma reaches lethality, participants will be rewarded with daily Dragonite Ore, champion bags, Blade Shards, and masterwork items.
  • For players who attain the highest tier, there’s a chance for ascended materials and rewards from previous Living World releases.

so it might initially seem like another zerg fest, but to obtain the highest rewards, people need to coordinate and break into many little groups to do all the objectives. having many little tiers might be too easy.

though i wish it was ascended gear, not just materials.

Really need Mission Briefings.

in Living World

Posted by: CHIPS.6018

CHIPS.6018

I read a lot of complains about zergs on the new world event in LA. People say that players just zerg all day and do not split up.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/escape/Enough-with-the-zergs-already

I think one of the causes is a lack of informative briefing before these events. People usually go for the most obvious and easiest. If no briefing was given, there is zero punishment for losing and zerging is the most rewarding style of play, then the players will go zerg each and everytime in these world events.

A simple mission briefing will really help the players in figuring out what to do and where they should go. It should include the following

-An overviewing map of the location
-Current situation, location of friendlies and foes, etc
-Objectives and where the players should be; where to defend or where to attack.

Take the Escape from LA for example:

-Map of the burning LA

-Orange circles indicating the spawn points of the refugees trying to escape.

-Then, orange circles indicating the poison gas machines that needs to be destroyed.

-Clear listing of the following 2 objectives:
1) Protect the refugees are they make their escape.
2) Destory the poison gas machines as they spawn, to delay the time of poison gas filling up the city. This gives you more time to save refugees.

-A clear listing of reward requirement:
Reward Determinant: The final reward is determined by how many refugees were saved in this run.
Rank A reward) 800 and above. This reward gives: XXXXXX
Rank B reward) Below 800. This reward gives: XXXXXX
Rank C reward) Below 400. This reward gives: XXXXXX
Rank D reward) Below 200. This reward gives: XXXXXX

Example of a simple yet effective briefing, which shows the players what they need to do to win.
