If you would actually try playing a thief you would soon learn that it doesnt need nerfing. The issue is basically newbs crying. I built my thief mainly foor power toughness and vitality.

If a glass cannon hits you and you arent geared for tough/vitality you will usually die. This isnt exclusive to thieves people. I can almost bet most of the whiners are low lvls with crap gear in wvw getting hit by decked out guys

Other than thief, which other class can 1vs4 noobs in open field and “sometimes” come out victorious?

Even the 2nd most OPed class, the mesmer, has no chance of actually winning a fight 1vs4 in open field. The mesmer might survive, but that’s about it.

No class should be able to 1vs4 enemies, no matter how noob the enemies are. The ceiling of the thief is miles above other classes.

This coming for a thief player who quitted thieving.

Elementarist, and Warriors for instance.

My WvW server is in T1. Players here are good enough that Elementalists and Warriors can never 1vs4 players.

Thieves on the other hand can 1vs4 players and win on a regular basis.

With all the talk about how the thief can get away if things go awry for them, I would like to know when retreat became a form of victory in people’s minds. So you didn’t get the 10 points in PvP or the chance for badge drops in WvW, but if you force a thief to retreat, you have won.

Because no repair cost, no loot for enemy, and you don’t have to waypoint. 3 reasons.

I’ll repeat it again, a good builded thief, cannot die, and somehow always has hp/iniative left (even after consta-spamming them over 40 secs with maybe 4-5 secs pause max). This should not be possible.

Warrior is a joke compared to thiefs. CC the warrior and he’s dead, can’t do anything. CC a thief, he cloacks, gets away.

I saw 20 thiefs use Shadow Refuge today. Some with very low hp (almost dead). Having played thief myself in wvw (lvl 53) I know aoe’s inside Shadow refuge field can easely kill thief. I did all my aoe’s (over 8k damage, and many dots), thief had low hp when he used it. And he STILL ESCAPED. you read this? Still. I’m all out of creativity, on how to catch and kill a thief. They always escape, always, unless they are noobs, who rarely cloack.

So no loot for the thief either, and no repair cost for you, however you now control the point you were trying to take or defend. Also if you lasted 45 seconds then forced the thief to retreat, that sounds like a rather balanced fight to me. As arena net keeps stating through words and small buffs to speed, thieves are supposed to be the most mobile, and they are on par with an elementalist. And imagine that, thieves using their most useful utility.

When the thief kills you, you are forced to resurrect at home. It will be more than 5 minutes before you can fight in the front line again. And you also need to repair your armour.

When you beat the thief and he escapes, he can be back in action at the front line within 1 minute. That means he can join any new fights nearby. He also doesn’t need to repair his armour.

How is this considered fair?

Necromancer is a “Attrition” class right? I would say a prolonged fight is around 120 seconds (2 minutes). Then how come the thief class can out DPS the necro in a 120 second time span? How come the thief can survive 120 seconds against 4 players, while the necromancers cannot survive for more than 30 seconds against 4 players?

This is the thief nerf vs anti-nerf argument in a nutshell.

For Nerfs:
1) Stealth + graphic rendering bug = stealth nearly 24/7. Even 4 guys have hard time killing 1 thief. (observed by many many witnesses)
2) High damage. 4-8k a hit.
3) High mobility. Thief wins he kills you. Thief loses he escapes successfully.

Anti-nerf:
1) LOL L2P! I am thief and I die all the time 1v1 against noob players. (self proclaimed without prove). I don’t see any graphic rendering bug I can see myself just fine!
2) No we never hit for 4-8k a hit! And warrior & guardian can tank them anyways. Forget all other 6 classes they are all glass cannons!
3) Why are you trying to kill a thief anyways? You should feel accomplished just escaping alive or forcing a thief to retreat.

It has a lot to do with the graphic rendering bug. In zerg battles (20+ vs 20+), it is not uncommon for a 5-10 seconds graphic load time of players. What this means is, when the thief un-stealth, he would get an extra 5-10 seconds of stealth. And hence why he “seems” to be able to invisible 24/7.

Even in 1v1 fights, thieves often gets 3-4 seconds of extra stealth time because of this.

Once they fix the graphic loading bug, we would see if thieves are truly overpowered or not.

Temporary solution: Prioritize the graphic loading of thieves so they load right away.

1) I am asking Anet to fix this by adding a skill “Destroy” in skill slot 10 of all siege weapons. That way our team could easily destroy these flame rams, to let our yaks though.

If someone was spying on you this would make their job much easier.

Great point. I changed it so only commanders can destroy siege weapons.

Spies building flame rams to block yaks.

Disclaimer: I am not going to mention server name, since it brings more harm than good. I want to talk about this issue only.

Tonight in the supply camp Speldan Clearcut, a team-mate of ours built 6 flame rams to block our yaks from transporting supplies. Since these flame rams were built by a team-mate, we cannot kill them to let our yaks though. (see attached)

As you know, Flame Rams are only useful against gates. So there are no benefits (to us) to build them inside a supply camp. So this was the work of a spies, to stop our yaks.

This tactic works very well because it not only blocks our yaks, it also drains a lot of our supplies. 6 flame rams costed our team 240 supplies, which could potential be a game breaker depending on the situation. A very good trade for only 36 silver.

My suggestions:

1) I am asking Anet to fix this by adding a skill “Destroy” in skill slot 10 of all siege weapons (only usable by commanders). That way our commander could easily destroy these flame rams, to let our yaks though.

2) I am asking Anet not to tolerate these behaviour. Anyone caught doing these kind of things should be permanently account banned.

3) Any team that suffers from such spies should get a 500 point bonus on their weekly score per spy found.

4) If found, any team that conduct spying should get a 1,000 point deduction on their weekly score per spy found.

So like always SBI got 2v1ed. We were down to Veloka and our keep. While we were fighting JQ zerg in Veloka, the SoS zerg skip our keep and came attack us from behind. After killing most of us, SoS pulled back and let JQ finish the job.

JQ and SOS literally just stand there and look at each other. How sad is that? They don’t ever fight at all. We got 2v1ed the whole night and our score eventually dropped to 55.

I mean I play this game for fun. I couldn’t careless who is winning as long as it was a fair fight. But these 2v1s happens every night and they are really taking the fun away.

What you didn’t show in these screenshots is what probably happened 1 minute later. Dead JQ or SoS scattered across the road.

As said a billion other times by a billion other people. World vs World vs World. By default there will always be 2v1. But as long as it’s not you getting 2v1ed it’s fun, right?

And if it’s always JQ and SoS vs SBI, how did we lose SM last night? C’mon bud. Need to get a cup of cement in ya.

The poison and weakness was 5s and 10s respectively. Now it only lasts 3s and 3s. This skill is now useless in both offence and defence.

This is a nerf of 40% and 70% respectively, btw. And this is huge. Basically this is Anet saying that this skill is so OPed that it shouldn’t exist in the first place.

Even though I, as a necromancer player, loved the fact that Fear wasn’t affected by Defiance, but try to be fair guys.
Necros were never meant to be able to fear through every special ability of a boss.

By the same argument, rock golems shouldn’t suffer from bleeding or poison. Zhaitan should be immune to any physical damage due to “heroic armor”. etc

I’m curious to know how they are honestly feeling about our opinions. If they agree with us that some (or all) of the changes suggested need to happen, I’d like them to say so. Or if they think everything is fine (hint: it’s not) I’d love for them to say “Knock it off guys, you’re going overboard”, just to know their stance on our situation.

Do they think we’re overreacting, do they have no clue what’s going on and what to do, or do they agree with us but are just afraid to say anything?

I think they’re siding with the top pvp’ers, where necro’s are being played because of epidemic. (Which I believe will be nerfed next patch)

Although most of the fixes and some suggestions I think they may actually agree with, but simply lack people to get it done, we still have SOOOO many bugs and they’re still not even touched. At this rate it’s going to take a WHOLE year from now before we’re even close to being fixed.

Once epidemic gets nerfed, those elite players would stop using necro. And with no feedback from them, the necro class would be forgotten altogether.

Same reason that Paragons in GW1 was bad and unpopular since the beginning, and were never fixed.

Chill, guys ! I think that you are taking this way out of proportion. Just learn how to use Death Shroud properly and you will see how insanely powerful the necromancer is.

On a serious note – while what A-net said is worrying, we still have no details on what they are looking to fix. We should keep an eye on what is happening, but it is still too early to panic.

The main reason I “speculate” this nerf is because Anet (the people balancing that is) have shown that they’ve sided with the “top” pvp’ers, and necro sitting there spreading conditions for aoe dmg is “the thing” now.

Now people are saying there’s too much aoe dmg flying around. Thus incoming nerf, since necro’s are the only ones in these matches doing the aoe’ing and what not.

Even in wvw its hard to hit that many people with AoE at once. People tend to spread out a lot during the zergs. Most of the time my 240 radius AoE only hits 3 people or less.

And since Epidemic got a 600 radius, it is often the only way to spread conditions to enough people. And given how low the damage of our conditions do, this is often the only way for a necro to do anything noticeable in wvw.

I am happy to now be playing in T1 where people know how to counter my thief

I am on T1 and the elite-thieves there are still hard to kill. One time the 5 of us, one of us a commander, was fighting a thief for a while until he gave up and ran. 5vs1 and the thief still got away, and delayed us for like a minute.

Real question is, why are you so determined to kill the thieves? If you have a stun break on your bar coupled with semi-decent reactions, and some cleave and/or AoE attacks, the thief won’t be able to kill you. Let them run away and try again later, when his steal+basilisk comes off of cooldown. Those cooldowns are roughly 45 seconds, so by which time the skills you need to not die should be off CD as well.

Thieves will kill you if you let them, don’t chase them. It’s been established many times over that thieves are not easy to catch, so stop trying: continue doing whatever you were doing and be on the look out for little puffs of black w/e it is, or see if a thief is following you at a distance.

Mesmer’s and warriors are two classes which are exceptional at combating thieves. A mesmer running Sword/Pistol has 2 stuns and should be running a stun break a long with distortion, you have a good chance to not die. Warriors have shield stance and then the usual bulls strike+frenzy+100b combo, can also use endure pain. The problem here lies with the fact that many players using these classes don’t use these weapon sets.

A good Mesmer should have a good chance to beat a good thief, as should a good warrior. The counters are out there, the problem lies with people being far too determined to try and hunt down the most mobile class in the game. I can’t offer much in terms of advice for other classes, sadly. All this comes from my personal experience in both s/tPvP, WvW, and PvE, roughly 800 hours on my thief.

Hope this helps some – though I suspect I’ll probably just get flamed for trying to defend thieves.

TL;DR Equip a stun break at all times, don’t chase.

Why are we trying to kill thieves in the first place? Because they are supposed to die if they lost the fight, but they can just run away.

Thieves can invisible 24/7, so you are never sure if they actually ran away. Often times you think they ran away, but a few seconds later they come back to finish the job.

So only Mesmers and Warriors, which are 2 of the relatively overpowered classes, can kill thieves? Good to know.

You can’t offer any advice for other professions on how to kill thieves, after playing as a thief for 800 hours, because other professions simply cannot kill thieves.

So all in all, yes thieves should be nerfed.

Invisible=hard to kill (as in, often times 4 guys can’t kill 1 thief)

High single target damage=kill you fast

Hard to kill+kill you fast=they will the War of Attrition too.

Mobility=if the thief loses the battle he can still runs away safely.

AoE=If it takes your team 15 AoE “guesses” to kill a thief, the enemy already won. Skill recharges will tear your team apart.

WvW needs to be 4 teams, not 3.

I just started wvw 3 weeks ago. And for the longest time my server was constantly being 2v1ed. It gets old fast when we face zerg after zerg after zerg and there was very little we can do.

2 Scenarios:

1) Its just so easy for the two lesser teams to team up and fight the strongest team in their match up. 2&3 vs 1. The 2nd team and 3rd team realize that their only chance is to work together, and so they do.

2) There are also incentive for the 1st team and the 3rd team to go against the 2nd rated team. 1&3 vs 2. 1st rated team wants to keep on top, while the 3rd rate team wants to surpass the 2nd.

I think having 4 teams in wvw, instead of just 3, would solve all these problems. The advantages of teaming up won’t be as obvious.

Take the previous scenarios.

1) We would have 2&3&4 vs 1. But this would rarely happen. Firstly it is hard to get 3 teams working together. And secondly, teams 3&4 would also want to overtake team 2. We would end up having 3&4 vs 2 vs 1.

2) We would have 1&3&4 vs 2. But once again this would rarely happen. Team 4 would like to overtake team 3 at some point. So we would end up having 1&4 vs 3 vs 2.

All in all, make alliance incentives less obvious. Then it won’t happen all the time.

Necro skills, balance and opinions

Well right off the bet we have so many traits that are useless in PvP. Forget about being underpowered. These are flat out useless. Look:

1) Parasitic Bond Gain life whenever you kill something. (bugged, doesn’t even work at all)

100% useless in PvP. By the time you kill something you already won, so your health auto heals. In group PvP, you can die so fast that, unless this skill heals your health back to full, it will still be useless. Not to mention it is bugged and doesn’t even work right now.

2) Siphoned Power Gain might when hit and under 25% health.

So your health reaches 25%. Now you gets 1 stack of might, which is 35 power and 35 condition damage. Congratulation I guess. You are still dead.

3) Death’s Embrace Deal 50% more damage while downed.

Yup that’s going to help…

4) Spiteful Removal When you kill a foe you lose a condition.

You either LMAO or cry when you see this. You choose! ^^

5) Chilling Darkness When you blind a target, you also apply chill for 1 second.

Chill for 1 second. So you snare the target and delay his skill recharges for 1 second. Total game breaker right there.

And yes I am aware that it works with Plague. Still useless.

6) Reanimator Summon a jagged horror whenever you kill a foe. 30 second cooldown.

Free rally for downed enemies.

7) Protection of the Horde Gain +20 toughness for each minion under your control.

Minions are bugged. Minions dies too fast. +20 toughness for each minion is pretty weak.

How does the server limit in wvw work?

Assuming that the server limit is 200 players per map. It seems that one of the world can sent in 100 guys, and the other teams cannot counter that.

The whole match would be 100vs50vs50.

Is that how the server limit works?

1) Sapping

Dig underground to break down walls. Takes a lot of resources to build, but once finish the wall falls instantly.

2) Siege tower

Very slow moving siege weapon. But it has a ton of hp. Once it gets to the wall the attackers can get on the walls instantly.

3) Basic Wooden Walls
Cheap and easy to build walls that are used to delay enemies. They have 500,000 hp but takes full damage from any source. They are easily destroyed but only takes 1s and 2 supplies to build.

There is no way to get onto the basic wooden walls.

The direction of the wall cannot be changed once its built.

The walls are neutral to all after its built. So the builders’ allies can damage it.

4) Advanced Wooden Walls
Thicker wooden walls with more health. They even comes with a small ladder at the back to allow the defenders to get onto it.

The biggest problem is invisibility. An elite thief can pretty much invisible 24/7. This combined with their 4-8k a hit damage makes them very deadly.

It is very common for an elite thief to 1v3 guys, go invisible, look for softest target, and down him. Then he invisible again and “finish him”.

Even 1v6 an elite thief can often hold his own until reinforcements arrives.

Our server is constantly out manned in my hour of play due to time zone differences. There is a huge time gap between NA players and Korean players. European players would fill that gap.

Jagged horror brings zero benefits, and its a free rally for the enemy. And given how hard it is to kill certain classes like thief, mesmer and guardian, rallying them could turn the whole battle against your team.

Necro vs elite-thief in WvW. How?

2 questions:

1) How to kill an elite-thief?

Thieves can pretty much invisible 24/7 and hit your for 4k-8k a hit. You are dead within 20 seconds, so you must kill the thief by then.

And assume the thief will run away at 25% health.

2) How to escape from an elite-thief?

Let’s say things are going very bad, and you are down to 50% health. You want to run away. How would you do it?

Reasons:

I ask these two questions because it is becoming a very serious problem in WvW in my server. There are always thieves ambushing people on the roads. They are pretty much the U-boats of WvW. Whenever I was spotted by an elite-enemy thief I am dead pretty much all the time. The only time I escape or win is against totally noob thieves that are predictable (e.g. my marks actually hits him while he was invisible).

Even when I travel with a group we aren’t safe. Very often one single thief can fight 3 people by himself. We simply can never see him. And before we know it one person is downed. The thief then invisible+"finish him".

Other times, the thief simply delay all of us and call for reinforcements. For while we were chasing the thief all over the place, his helps arrives and we all gets slaughtered.

1) Marks can no longer target walls.
2) When DS ends, all your skills takes 5 seconds longer to recharge.
3) You can no longer use DS underwater.
4) Necrotic Grasp flies even slower than before and has shorter range.
5) More mobs are now immune to bleeding and poison.
6) Veteran mobs are now immune to fear.
7) All axe skills now has melee range as intended.
8) Skill 1 of scepter now offers bleeding 3 times. It will no longer poison foes at all.
9) Dagger now reduce your armor by 200, duel dagger reduce by 600, as intended.

3) Total inability to solo.

I have to disagree with this one. I run a tanky support build with full shaman’s gear, and I rarely lose a 1v1 in WvW. My damage is pathetic and my bleeds mediocre, but with DS, decent heals, and 35k+ health (with WvW buffs), most enemies can’t put enough damage out to down me before I grind their health down. Against a bunker guardian or a well built tanky warrior, it’s usually a draw with both of us outhealing the other’s damage. Sure, I’m not bursting people down in 3 seconds, but that’s not what necro is about.

As for chasing, every necro has DS2, which, if it connects, is a teleport to your target as well as a slow with the chill. Not 100% reliable, but a good start.

You missed my point. When the necro wins, most enemies have all these gadgets to run away with. When the necro loses, he is dead 100% because he cannot escape. So even assuming a 50/50 win rate, the necro still loses because he cannot actually kill anyone solo in wvw. All he could do was force the enemy to retreat.

And as you said necro wasn’t meant to kill enemies in seconds. That’s true. But the longer it takes you to kill someone, the higher the chance that his allies would come. By then the necro is dead because, once again, he cannot run away.

It come down to risk vs benefits. When you solo as a necro, it is all risk and nearly zero benefits. Given the pros and cons, there is very little reason for a necromancer to solo. Their class just aren’t made for solo spec-ops.

After talking about the bad, I will talk about the goods.

1) Awesome team buffs and healing.

I hasn’t played a Guardian so I can’t compare. But from my experience necros are awesome team support. Mark of Blood, Well of Blood and Transfusion gives allies tons of HP.

Spectral Wall gives good buffs. Well of Blood also gives retaliate with a burst finisher.

I was in a group of 4 or 5 guys, and we beat a force of 10 enemies because they couldn’t kill us. All the extra healing that I provided goes on top of my allies’ self healing, which makes them nearly indestructible.

And the bigger the group, the better the necro is. From my experience the class really shrines in big fights. And I feel that I was often the difference maker in those 15 vs 15 fights.

2) Good siege skills.

Marks, Poison Cloud and Flesh Wurm are very good siege skills. All of them can be casted on the walls. Marks and Poison Cloud will force the enemies to retreat from the walls. Flesh Wurms on the top of the walls are just annoying. They are great distraction for the defenders.

Spectral Grasp are great for pulling over-aggressive enemies off the walls.

Mix this with those good healing skills and buffs, necro is probably the best siege support class in wvw.

3) In group fights in wvw, necros are often ignored.

I said earlier that when running away, people would often go after the necro because they know he/she is 100% dead. This still holds true.

However during the stalemates of a fight, it is rare for the enemies to go after the necro.

Think about it from their point of view. You have this thief dashing out 4k to 8k damage a hit to you. And you have this mage class guy that doesn’t seem to be doing anything, who do you attack first? Obviously you try to take down the thief!

You have to remember that the enemy cannot see how much buffs and healing you are giving you allies, so most enemies consider you harmless during a stalemate. And unlike GW1 monks, you don’t look any different from other mages, so you don’t really stand out.

I had been playing a ton of wvw lately. Few things I want to get into:

1) Escaping from 4 guys.

I know with 100% certainty. When my side was winning, and the enemies starts running, enemy necros always dies. They would put on death shrouds for a while. They had tons of hp so they can tank for a while. But they always end up dying in a chase. When you are being chased by like 4 guys, the difference between 15k hp and 30k hp is only 4 seconds vs 8 seconds. You die either way.

I am also a necros, but I cannot conclude the same thing because perhaps I suck. But by observing my enemy necros I can come to a more fair conclusion.

Think about it. When was the last time an enemy necro was chased by you and 3 other allies, and he/she escaped successfully? I bet very rarely. They can’t invisible. They can’t teleport. They can’t clone. Their snares are weak at best. Their movement speed are decent with swiftness, but nearly every other class have swiftness anyways so it isn’t really an advantage. Their healing are decent, but against 4 guys its never enough. Necros can remove all their conditions every 25 seconds with Consume Conditions, but that won’t save them.

All in all, necros just lack these special gadgets, that other professions have, to survive a chase.

On the other hand, I have seen many other professions escaping from 4 guys alive.

2) Damage

It seems to me the average damage per hit, of other professions, are easily over 4k. Many people hits me for like 8k a hit.

As a necro, the only “mobs” that I can hit for that kind of damage are rabbits.

3) Total inability to solo.

I find my necro loosing most 1v1 fights in wvw, and that’s a huge problem for me. As I said in point 1, necro sucks are running away. So every time I fight, I must be fully committed 100%. There won’t be any escape.

Even when I “ambushed” the enemy, so I get the first hits, I find myself losing. My damage to survivability ratio just seems to get constantly outclassed.

And even in those “rare” fights that I was winning, the enemy just runs away. How is that fair?

So in wvw, I find myself constantly looking for groups, since I am very weak solo. I can’t get anything done by myself.

4) Down skills are clearly weakest of all professions.

When downed, necros are the easiest class to kill. While other classes have cool stuffs like teleporting away, invisibility, knockback everyone, clones, etc, what do we have? Oh, single target fear. Good luck survive against 4 guys with their “haha u r dead!” balls, even when there are tons of allies around to help.

After talking to my guild mates I decided to skip the final mission. They said its the worst dungeon ever made. You just die again and again after fighting waves after waves after waves after waves after waves of Risens. And when you get to Zhaitan you can pretty much afk and kill him. No creativity whatsoever. I won’t bother.

I had played wvw for a while and 99.99% of the fights are on land. I am surprised that none of the forts are underwater to encourage underwater combat. In future maps, I hope they add some underwater fortresses and strongholds.
