I don’t think “overly sensual” is what they were going for with Jory’s voice. She’s meant to sound like an old timey detective because she is a parody of Sherlock Holmes….

As to Kasmeer’s initial appearance being in a bikini – they were on a beach, the plot was about the Consortium trying to set up a resort blah blah blah, so I don’t think it was that unreasonable. If you want to argue that a woman in a bikini is fan service then I strongly suggest you don’t ever go to a beach xD.

What this guy/girl said. Truly, I see lots of fan-service on the beach every year. I don’t know how I can take it! :P Better cover up on the beach ladies.

Anyone sad about the old stage cinematics go should replay the fall of Claw Island. Try it with an actual battle music in the background (custom battle tracks can be made, see in the Audio subforum). 2 seconds in any stage cutscene you will be asking “im sure this is all very tragic and all, but there is a RISEN HORDE HITTING MEEEEE!!”

About any new cinematic technology being implemented on old, Personal Story instances: I remember the update in GW1 (think it was between Nightfall and EotN) when lipsync (as crude as it was at the time) was given to every single cutscenes. in one patch. That alone made me play another character from start again. For some, it can really increase replay value.

The question is how developer-friendly you can make the new system, where micro-management is not that necessary to yield good, enjoyable results.

Eh they didn’t really ad lip sync but rather just mouth opening and closing :P It’s still laughable.

Good riddance! Now bring back Guild Wars 1 cinematics!

GW1 cinematics told a better story for the most part but they’re so out dated. Even when I played it for the first time it felt clunky and weird.

If we could combine updated GW1 cinematic style + facial expressions, lip sync and gestures from GW2 – I say you have a win combo there. It’s normal for games to have that these days.

We voted her into office, and now will be her time to shine! We know Ellen was a dedicated and skilled Lionguard agent, and her training hasn’t simply vanished in the few months she’s been sitting in a councilor’s chair. Kiel shall rise, to lead the people of her city to safety! She will help us stop the invasion, as only a hero can!

Plus, she has a giant holographic Ellen Kiel ready to destroy the Marionette! It’ll be like Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla!

Besides, what’s Gnashblade gonna do? Bribe the Krait? Neckstab the Marionette? Those are pretty much his only skills. Fleabag is useless.

The cinematics that you see in the personal story where 2 characters talk to each other on a stage-like environment have been…retired.

This makes me a sad panda Care to explain why?

1. Dev resources for the the team that handled the 2 person cinematics were moved onto other teams after launch. I think it was about 3-4 people. We no longer have the resources to support those types of cinematics. Every gesture and expression is hand placed for each line. Even with a library of additive animation, it still took a lot of time to make one.

2. Personally, I was never a fan of the presentation. I think it breaks immersion and takes you out of the moment.

3. We could never paint enough background art for every scenario. You could experience a cinematic at night, next to a cave, but the background is a happy Divinity’s Reach.

4. Line timing was always an issue. There would always be a pause as new characters came in to speak.

5. Technical limitations prevented us from having more than 2 characters on screen at a time. This made for some pretty painful scenes…Characters would pop on screen and jump from left or right breaking an imaginary 180 degree rule.

Sometimes cutting a broken feature is better than leaving it in with issues. By cutting it, it forces us to develop better tools and presentations. Nothing will get better by ignoring something that a large portion of fans dislike. -I know some fans liked them

Hopefully our future solution will include the gestures, expressions, and additive technology from the 2 character cinematics, but play out in the game world with proper camera cuts and lip sync.

Yeah of course I never meant to imply that those cut scenes in personal story were the holy pinnacle of storytelling, even if it turned out that way. But even if something isn’t as good as you planned it to be, in my opinion it still beats the current “bystander” type of storytelling where all the important characters in the current LS are treated as mere NPC-s , without any lip sync, animations and gestures. I guess that’s what I’ve been missing, and want to see.

Hopefully you can deliver even better way of showing character’s emotions and we’ll be rooting for ya Especially if we can see some of the new stuff in the LS season 2.

CharrGirl.7896

I’m totally okay with losing Lion’s Arch, maybe even in favor of it as long as this means that

-Each racial city is getting their own mystic forge, portal hub, wvw-pvp portals and Fractals gate.
-Returning or temporary LS events are equally spread apart across the racial cities (Hoelbrak getting Wintersday due to setting aesthetics, Black Citadel getting Holloween now due to the new Bloody Prince connections, Rata Sum and Divinity’s Reach sticking with SAB and Queen’s Jubilee, etc.)
-Certain dungeon armor sellers are relative to each city (Ascalon Catacombs and CoF sticking to the Black Citadel, Twilight Arbor armor can only be bought from a seller in The Grove, etc.)

If Divnity’s Reach is going to become the new hub that everyone is forced to congregate to, then I see no point in getting rid of Lion’s Arch.

This. This and this.

I ALWAYS wanted Hoelbrak to be the Wintersday hub…I mean that thing looks like a fairy tale. With destruction of LA, other cities should get more importance. Make it happen, Anet!

Maybe they should just do a story that is super easy to understand for the ’merican reality TV crowd.

The size wasn’t the problem for me, it was just too ugly……unlike DR anyways.

Next on the list? Charr city please! Get rid of those gear looking floor tile things, seriously no offense but who thought that up, gears (cogs)? :S

How about no? BC is the best freaking’ thing in this game haha. The gear and metal is part of Charr culture and hands down they’re the best. And LA has nice design to it, has it’s history and that explains the architecture, but as I said its toooo small.

The Lionguards are idiots and soon they’ll taste it first hand.

Southsun Economist

Hi,

I have a question, and I’m not sure where to put it.

So anyway, me and few of my friends started the cleansing of settlements on Southsun for the karka queen to spawn. I was also interested in buying the potion of karka toughness, just to see how it would work. It’s supposed to be sold by merchants when you have all 4 settlements captured. So we captured all 4, and nothing – the economists were selling plain white items as usual, no added exotics or potions.

Alright, we beat the karka queen. After that I check again – nothing. And yesterday, after we beat her, I checked with economist NPC and he had those items for sale. I just didn’t buy them because I didn’t have any passion flowers on me then.

So is this bugged or what? How can I know for sure they sell those special items?

Do you even care about relationships?

in The Edge of the Mists

Posted by: CharrGirl.7896

CharrGirl.7896

I would like to point out that the argument of “Why should the entire GW2 player base be limited to what you like” can be used against you and those of the same mindset. Why should those who don’t wish to leave their comfort zone be forced to just because a few individuals actually find such content enjoyable? Why must those who have a problem with a certain type of content be forced to be silent simply because the content is connected to political agendas?

So Anet shouldn’t show people of color in their stories either because it makes some people (racists) uncomfortable?

Wait so you’re telling that Logan is literally mesmerized this all time? That’s freaking sad.

I’m sure it’s just bad writting. It seems like he would have to be mesmerized to act the way he did but everything seems to point to the writer just thinking that yes, this is what a romance looks like.

Well, bad writing or not, this little piece of info makes the whole thing look completely different. I certainly do not expect Bioware level of writing for an MMO, but to be honest, I find myself enjoying it anyway. I don’t need a GoT style of storytelling to feel myself entertained.

And a side note, I agree with your comment about relationships. I actually think that a minority of players feel disturbed or uncomfortable by this. The rest enjoy it/ignore it.

And Souske.7268 is right. Hell, most couples I know act 100x more obnoxious and have to constantly make people feel uncomfortable with their presence. But nothing I can’t understand. It’s how you act when you feel…lovestruck lol. I mean I’m in a relationship for 5 years now and I still call my boyfriend pet names (not in front of everyone ofcourse..). Not that you need to know that, but maybe that’s why I have a very high tolerance for those things, and see relationships differently. I mean kitten , Marjory calls her “honey”. Terrifying political agenda right there.

Live and let live.

Wait so you’re telling that Logan is literally mesmerized this all time? That’s freaking sad.

The Logan/Jennah thing annoys me also, but as others have mentioned, Logan is actually under Jennah’s magical influence, so I give him a pass for that. Really, I feel sad for him more than anything else. She won’t let him go, but she also won’t throw him any bones. He’s just her pet. =/ (Also, devs: PLEASE make it more obvious in the actual game that Logan is under the effects of Mesmer magic. Almost no one understands that because it’s only in the book, and it makes Logan seem like a real idiot.)

yeah when I first played through the human storyline, since my first character was a human, I thought Logan was kind of a dipkitten. But now that I’ve read the book, I really just feel terrible for him. In the one personal story mission where you and Trahearne go through Orr with the Pale Tree, you see Logan and Rytlock arguing over what happened to Snaff, and Logan kittening says, “Someone would have died either way! Any one of you would have made the same choice…” Like, that’s how he justifies it to himself. It’s really kittening sad to watch him go through the mental gymnastics required for him to fit into the version of reality that Jennah has fed to him.

In all honesty, Jennah probably would have been fine even if Logan hadn’t been there. And how many people have died because of Kralkatorrik since that day — people who would still be alive if Logan had been there and DE had killed the dragon? I just. Ugh. I feel like there’s no closure for him. Sure, DE got back together and everyone forgave him, but it’s pretty obvious that he still doesn’t forgive himself because he still has that lingering feeling that he made the wrong choice… because he did… because it wasn’t the choice he would have made if it had really been up to him to decide. But that’s just how his story ends. At least for now. :c

I never would have thought really. Even though it could be kind of obvious since Jennah is a mesmer. And Countess Overkill (Anise, I call her like that because she can summon like, 10 illusions:P).

My question is, if this is such an important story element, why must we learn from it outside the game?

Or maybe, he grew to love her anyway? Do mesmer illusions really last that long?…

Elephant in the room: the heavily implied lesbian innuendo. The fact is that not everyone likes, agrees with, or is comfortable with homosexuality. It could be that they find the physical act to be disconcerting. It could be that they don’t agree with notion of contemporary homosexuality as a whole.

Such people and opinions are best ignored.

It could be something less, like how many don’t like how the fanservice angle is patronizing men, or how their sexuality is being used to crutch an otherwise uninteresting story, thus exploiting the entire demographic.

…However that’s just video games for you, you could say the same about the design of female armor being eyecandy in general. Yet people point out this particular instance when it’s on par with the rest of GW2’s design and writing, which makes me think that a lot of them are actually complaining for the first set of reasons yet trying to hide their own issues by claiming it’s for the last one.

Pretty much this. Was going to point this out myself. Most of female armors I see running around are skimpy as hell, with tons of skin revealed (and don’t get me started about that underboob armor and T3 sets). That’s not something I want to see in this game because it doesn’t attract me, but there is no use complaining about what other people like. And you have 2 story important, interesting, and fairly well dressed ladies and everybody goes apekitten because they’re dating? Even if you aren’t on the side who is bothered by both, that’s just plain hypocrisy right there.

I think Kasmeer and Marjory are cute together and their flirting is fun, and it’s cool for Anet to be inclusive like this. I think most people who can’t stomach this are just intolerant bigots, if one of them was a guy even people who dislike how the relationship was written or don’t care would just shrug and move on.

Being inclusive has nothing to do with why they’re doing this. This relationship is designed for the juvenile male audience.

What if I told you that you don’t have to be a juvenile male to enjoy this?

You’d have to be some form juvenile and have a poor grasp on how storytelling works, though. Whether you’re male or not doesn’t really matter. Not all representation is good representation. This is a lesson a lot of game companies need to learn (I’m looking at you, Bioware). There’s a difference between making good, nuanced characters who also happen to be queer (like Caithe and Faolain) and making two highly fetishized characters who can’t go more than half a scene without reminding you how much of hot lesbians they are, like Marjory and Kasmeer.

I was going to post something intelligent but then I lost my will. Have it your way then, no sense arguing if you see it like that.

This!

Just throwing in a romance angle doesn’t make me care about the characters. The only characters with any real depth got killed off in the first half of the story line. Rox and Braham have some potential as interesting characters. But Marjory and Kasmeer are just plain boring and so I find their romance mostly to be an irritating interruption in my goal to slaughter as much of the tyrian wildlife as possible while wearing cool armor.

Indeed, indeed. Then again majority of players are in the game and enjoying it so a tiny percentage of people who post on forum, and even less who want to shun such things because they don’t like it shouldn’t really paint a picture as to how the majority of GW2 community feels about those things.

From what I see from the in game conversations, other articles, blog posts, vids (even WP expressed his delight as in “freaking finally!”) it’s safe to say that the majority is feeling very positive about this. For whatever reasons.

Thats why I also hope that Taimi die horribly. Cartoony baby-genius is even worse than Scarlet for me.

Having a disease is realistic… .

Also, it’s not like the fact that Taimi is a cripple isn’t there to show that doesn’t stop her to do what she wants, and not succumb to disabilities.

Nope, they added a cripple because they want a rainbow of political correctness. Guess they’re racist too, since Braham isn’t black.

nope. They have Braham and Rox for that inter-racial couple.

It looks to be right with the political correctness of current hot topics in the world.

Sexual Issues – Marjory/Kasmeer lesbian couple
Disabilities – Taimi with hers

And what better way than to tie up Political Correctness than with……..

A politician!!! I’m looking at you Ellen Kiel!

I guess all that’s missing is a transgendered person and we’ll have everything tied up neatly in a bow

If the Pale Tree is the supposed champion of Mordy, note, supposed not confirmed, maybe she makes all Sylvari with their psyche blocked off from the dragon.

That way she can protect them not to be corrupted from the start, in their Dream. That’s why the Tree warned her not to look further, or it would break her.

And what about the “random” jungle dragon boss in Sylvari Dream sequence when you start a personal storyline? The “poison” that threatens every new sylvari?

What if Scarlet’s mentioning Caithe’s “secret” is actually Caithe’s knowledge about the elder jungle dragon? Doesn’t this also explain why is Scarlet chosen specifically, as a sylvari? Couple that with their limitless curiosity and unknown learning capacity. Mix that with a crazy asura and you have a deadly combo.

And why isn’t Pale Tree evil? Because it grew on top of Ventari’s teachings.

It would actually be a great way to introduce a new dragon!

A wish: Cutscenes in Living Story

The problem with cutscenes (even simpl GW1 style cutscenes) is that thy’re time extensive.
AN is doing better with dialogue recently but adding cutscenes would cost them sevral days for each update, days they don’t have with their development cycles.

I actually prefer staying in control of my character when npcs are talking, especially when they’re not just standing around and are actually animated.

I agree to a certain extent. That’s why I proposed cut scenes like the ones we have already in personal story, in my attachment picture.

Taimi's Predicament [Spoilers]

Destiny Edge 2.0 (and all LS-related team) starts to remind me annoyingly politically correct action movies. I have nothing against all that groups in particular but it is just statistically improbable that we will have it all at once. Just stahp, I want realistic characters.

/ sarcasm off

Now, who votes for Bro-ham being her new personal golem carrier?

Commander tag

So now apparently you can see your commander tag floating above your head?

Like, dislike?

Personally I’m not sure if I like it, it’s kinda distracting tbh. I mean how else would I be able to tell that I’m a commander? :P
