Hit the nail on the head there, Dan. I do so love the excuses bad PvPers make for trying to legitimize their behaviour.
I love the excuses PvE’rs make to try n legitimize their behaviour.
You don’t wanna PvP? Than fine don’t get the achievement but don’t complain about it.
The point is, that puzzle is not proper PvP. People who’re genuinley interested in PvP don’t go there. When it’s not filled with incentives to lure defenseless PvE players in, it’s usually empty enough to hear a pin drop. It’s just a jumping puzzle that has PvP enabled which is causing players who aren’t good enough to win PvP against regulars to offload their frustration on PvE players.
Soo… Here I am looking through this thread about PvE kittens (deliberate) being scared of the PvP zone… N than complain that one of their wonderful achievements for the event is in there. So please tell me when will I be able to get the meta reward stuff without doing the mind boggling dumb PvE content? I wanted the Sclerite backpack for PvP I ended up being forced into killing brain dead things in PvE.
I wanted the Dragon Helmet for sPvP n I was once again forced into PvE. Wanted the Holographic Wings for sPvP had to do PvE.
So here’s my counter arguement why are PvP players forced into PvE when personally I hate it with a passion, there’s no joy or fun in fighting n killing things without a brain. Where’s the challenge in that? Tactics you say? Well shame it’s the same tactics over n over n over again afterwards mobs never change they’re not humans.
So tell me when can I expect to have a way to complete the meta achievements through PvP if all I want is the skin of it? Until the day I do you PvE’rs can just keep quiet n endure the fact that I’ll enjoy killing every single one of you as you struggle in Obsidian Sanctum. ^^
New life Goal: Kill PvE’rs in Obsidian Sanctum enough so they Rage Quit.
Your “counter-argument” is not a counter argument but an additional point of criticism and i think that most PvE players would agree with you on it.
Please point out where I attempted to equate the significance of not taking showers to not playing GW2. I don’t do that. That is a silly comparison.
Okay, here you go:
When people say “it’s optional,” they usually mean that the consequences of NOT doing it is minimal. For example, taking a shower is purely optional, yes, but the consequences of not doing so is quite significant. [….]
[…] the consequences of not playing the game is far more significant than the consequences of not getting 15 achievement points.
If that is not a comparison, then please explain to me in what other way not playing the game is “far more significant” than not getting 15 achievment points?
That’s true, but if you think about it, playing the game is optional entirely.
I’m not sure if you really read my post or not, but the consequences of not playing the game is far more significant than the consequences of not getting 15 achievement points. Again, it’s a silly comparison.
I have read your post and I’m happy to take up your example from it.
You have said that a lot of things in life are optional but there are some things that are less optional than others and you’ve given the example of showering. And I agree with you on that. But from that perspective playing a video game seems pretty optional to me.
You’re trying to force a perspective on me where playing GW2 is essentially as important as showering, which would make getting an achievment seem pretty irrelevant. But I refuse to take that stance. I’m personally not seeing that much of a difference in relevance (or significance, to use your term) to my life between playing the entire game and getting a single achievment.
(edited by CorneliusCoffin.3169)
Like stated above, its an achievement. Some will require you to do stuff you may not enjoy, others might.
It is optional like almost everything else in the game.
As the great Sheldon Cooper said: “We have to take in nourishment, expel waste and breathe in enough oxygen to keep our cells from dying. Everything else is purely optional”
Yet, something tells me that a life that’s reduced to fullfilling the non-optional tasks would be pretty boring, don’t you think?
The point I’m trying to make is: The fact that it’s optional isn’t really a reason for people not to want it to be good and entertaining. This is a silly counterargument. When people say “it’s optional,” they usually mean that the consequences of NOT doing it is minimal. For example, taking a shower is purely optional, yes, but the consequences of not doing so is quite significant.
Whereas not doing the one Obsidian Sanctum achievement has….minimal impact on your gaming experience.
That’s true, but if you think about it, playing the game is optional entirely. People play the game because they choose to and it’s fun. I know that it’s sometimes hard to see beneath all the name calling and flaming (I’m personally getting too emotional over games at times.) but at the core of all the critique is usally the plea for a better gaming experience. And I think that’s justified. Not saying that the developers neccesarily need to take all of it into account, but I think it’s a players right to voice their oppinion on what they like and what they don’t.
And if there is repeated feedback on a certain feature that’s obviously very unpopular, it would be nice to at least see someone of the development or support team come in here and drop us a brief note like: “Hey this is what we think about it, this is why we chose to go with it again, here’s why we implemented it in the game”
I think that would calm a lot of players down.
It isn’t but it is catered towards the WvW players since its in a familiar territory for them and just unlike the other 99% achievements in the open world.
It caters to the WvW players, all right, but not the way you say. It’s there to give WvW players free targets.
And here i thought that Anet actually learned something after aetherblade obsidian cache…
That’s exactly it.
I just read the hint up there that a lot of players will run the sanctum almost daily for the “free targets”. I can say from experience, that this is simply not true for the more succesful servers in WvW (I’m playing on a top-3 server in Europe). On a succesful server you’ll find find a lot of resentments against running the jumping puzzle because there are a lot more “free” badges in open combat than in the JP.
To me this seems to be the classical case of the man who gets yelled at by his boss and then yells at his wife at home, who yells at the kids, who kick the dog, which barks at the cat, etc.
The servers that aren’t as succesful in WvW simply resort to the jumping puzzle to farm people who aren’t interested in PvP and who aren’t supported by their servers who are actually doing fine in WvW.
It’s grief play, if you want to put it drastically. But that’s what it is. And it’s encouraged/supported by the unneccesary achievment.

The point I’m trying to make is: The fact that it’s optional isn’t really a reason for people not to want it to be good and entertaining.
the puzzle is extremely easy on any char if you utilize the perma stealth fountains located at 3 different places.
Achievements being equally distributed for all player types is the best way to go, which is exactly what anet is doing.A lot of wvw players can cry about achievements only being put in open world but they don’t so quit crying every time an achievement is added for Wvw players.
This isn’t a WvW achievement though. This is a JP achievement in the midst of WvW.
The sad part is, it’s not even that any longer, since it has become its own map. It’s just a jumping puzzle with PvP enabled that’s coincidentally accesible through the Eternal Battlegrounds (and rewards WvW stuff, I’ll give it that).
It’s a nuisance for PvE and WvW players alike.
PvE palyers don’t like it because it’s PvP.
WvW players don’t like it, because the PvE crowd takes up server space transfering to the puzzle.
The only people who truly enjoy it are those who get a kick out of bashing players who are neither equiped for nor interested in PvP battles.
I give up.
While every other puzzle that came out so far (including the Mad King’s clocktower) had this sort of “practice makes perfect”-learning curve to it -which, admitteldly was sometimes steeper than others – this one is the first where after more than a week of trying to play it, I still feel like I’m not considerably closer to being able to complete this puzzle in a reliable manner. Sure, I’ve improved in some parts, got to know the mechanics, learned the way (actually managed to complete the puzzle a couple of times), managed to time my jumps, but there are still too many jumps where you’re being jerked into the air in a direction you can’t really control and required to land on a toothpick while your camera is having an epileptic seizure and if you don’t manage you’ll die and have to start from the beginning.
This really is the first time where I know the way of the puzzle but I’m not relaibly able to complete it after a while and I hope puzzles like this won’t ever happen again in the future.
If at all, I’d also go with Dragon Coffers, but I’m actually very sceptical those are going to rise.
Desptie all of the complaining, I actually think that most people who wanted a Jade ticket will have gotten one by now, after almost a month of dragon coffers dropping excessively. Neither the ticket nor the weapon skin are tradeable so the coffers are not worth flipping, so I doubt the demand will be that high for them.
I have a feeling that the monocle might rise in the long term, but that’s quite an investment to make.
Hmm, I don’t actually see that coming. People who are on their main quest will need the experience of coming to Orr, filled with undead, I guess.
I also don’t think that the living story requires the undead to be removed. For all we know it’s not definitely temporally located, meaning it could very well take place before the defeat of Zhaitan.
Huh?
You not help moshpoipoi, make quaggan sad.
Koo.
I waited in the Grand Piazza in Lion’s arch and heard the conversation there between Inspector Ellen Kiel and Magnus, but the instanced conversation “A Future in Politics” is still not working.
I can’t help but wonder if this isn’t meant to be active yet. I filed an in-game bug report anyway.
I didn’t even hear a conversation between them. I went there because it was mentioned here on the forums. What did they say?
EDIT: Nevermind, I just witnessed it.
(edited by CorneliusCoffin.3169)
Is this even supposed to be there? Was this announced anywhere?
Somehow this seems to me like another case of ((Delete Me)).
This is ((DeleteMe))-Gate Part II.
I don’t think that the Oculus Rift really works with games that make use of 3rd person perspective.
Oculus Rift works with all sorts of games. Th only difference is that you will feel like you’re some sort of a bodyless ghost floating behind your character.
Not really.
This might be the case when you have a fixed camera position, i.e. when you’re always at the same spot behind your character. With most 3rd person perspective games however, the “camera angle” is centered on the avatar and you’re able to circle around that avatar. That perspectivic movement would feel totally unnatural.
Just think of a situation when you’re talking to someone and you’re looking at their face but when you tilt your head right or left you can see into their ear. That’s how it would feel.

LOL ships can have sex, didn’t really know that.
It’s called ships with benefits.
I don’t think that the Oculus Rift really works with games that make use of 3rd person perspective.
Where do people figure they can get 10 runs in an hour? That’s only if you have an extremely hardcore farming group and it’s never contested. Ever. If you’re lucky you’ll get 6-7 runs in on average, even when hardcore farming with a decent group due to contested points, the need to sell, etc
There is just no way anyone ever did 10 runs in an hour. Not even with an expert hardcore farming group. Everyone who claims to have done it is a liar.
The dialogue alone takes up 3-4 minutes in this dungeon. If you look it up on youtube, the fastest speedruns you can find are around 6 minutes only because they’ve cut the entire opening sequence (entering the dungeon, choosing a path, blasting the door, etc.) from the run.
I’m sure Anet will troll us and this boost will not stack with others.
and only works in Southsun Cove.
(edited by CorneliusCoffin.3169)
but why would they disagree?
Let me rephrase my statement in form of a question.
If you wouldn’t want people to "grind"* for a final stat increase that is significantly below 1%, what would you make them grind for? Every other grind just seems more unfair to me.
*I’m using grind in inverted commas here because I think if you’re actually grinding for ascended gear (i.e. trying to craft it in the mystic forge), you’re doing it wrong, but that’s your choice, not the games’.
(edited by CorneliusCoffin.3169)
that’s why we need more alternatives!
reaching max stats in PvE / WvW should not involve outrageous grind!
outrageous grind for very special skins is fine.
but not for max stats!
Well, that’s your opinion that you’re entitled to, but I think you’ll find many users on here disagreeing.
Reaching good stats shouldn’t require any grinding and so far it doesn’t. I’ve had all my charatcers on full exo by the time I finished their personal story.
However, if you’re a true elitist and you’re going to go for that extra 0.08% (which is currently roughly the difference in stats between full exo and full ascended) because otherwise it doesn’t feel like max stats, I think it’s okay if that requires some grind.
Only thing that needs nerfing is the requirement for a Vial of Mist Essence, which is what forces people to play the RNG game in fractals. Everything else is appropriate. No one bought these back pieces for the skins, mostly because the skins aren’t worth it. Saying that you should get a massively cheaper option, because it’s generic, is not a compromise.
Moreover, the stat increase from exotic to ascended backpiece is tiny. If you really, really, really think you need it… then it’s worth that amount of gold to you. If you don’t… then make do with an exotic.
karma, coins, laurels etc other forms of grind is “massively cheaper” you mean? how so?
well, my stance remains the same.
outrageous grind for special skins + stats is acceptable.
outrageous grind for stats only is NOT acceptable.thanks for your feedback though!
tiny increase?

That really is a tiny difference. And I’m not going to let your “mutiply this by…”-argument count, because you can really buy all the other ascended gear at laurel vendors if you so desire (although I’d still argue it’s not really worth it, if you don’t run fractals a lot.)
I think what people need to realise is that you really don’t need ascended gear outside the fractals (and I’m going to make one exception to this later but it won’t concern the back piece).
Ascended items have more or less the same stats as upgraded exotic items (I know there is a difference, but it really is minimal). This means that you can already get back items with almost the same stats as the ascended ones at karma vendors, guild traders, BLTP, etc. The only advantage those ascended items have is the infusion slot, which you’ll only need for agony resistance if you’re a frequent fractal runner. (Again, I know that there are other infusions that give you 4 on any stat, but yeah…4).
So basically, if you’re running fractals frequently, you’ll stack up on fractal relics eventually and be able to buy the ascended back piece. If you’re not running the fractals, go and buy an exotic back piece. If you’re not running fractals frequently but you want ascended gear for the +5 in stats, you really do deserve a bit of grind.
The only exception I’m going to let count to this are ascended amulets with utility infusion slots, which you can use for infusions with +20% gold find, +20% MF, +20% Exp. or +15% karma. Those, however, you can buy at the laurel vendors.
I’d buy food.
Decades of gaming have lead me to the conclusion that my gaming will suffer considerably once I’m dead through starvation. The only sensible countermeasure against starvation I have found is eating. Eating requires food. Food makes for a 150% richer and happier gameplay experience.
Thanks for the responses guys. I have tried the world bosses for a while but I actually find them a little boring and often unrewarding. COF, whilst probably an amazing source of income compared to others doesn’t appeal to me. I don’t wanna cap a class I don’t enjoy, pay to gear him up and then play a dungeon I don’t wanna do over and over again, I thought you were meant to be rewarded for whichever part of the game you do, all they’ve done recently is push people towards COF. That and I’m pretty pessimistic and I know the second I get my warrior geared up and ready for action they’d throw in a nerf on COF and I’d have a big old tantrum.
Anyway thanks again for the responses.
Well, I guess that’s the general issue you’re going to have with farming, it gets repetitive fast. There’s always goint to be a way to play a game more effectively than all of the other ways. Currently that way seems to be COF1. There were other ways in the past (e.g tunnel farming in Cursed Shores. the buggy first boss of Arah) but really all those were repetitive and monotonous as well. It’s always going to be a decision between efectiveness and variety.
Once COF1 gets buffed, I’m pretty sure people will find something else to do.
This JP is so old skool, it makes me sentimental. I get kickbacks to the very first months of GW2 when the camera was constantly glitching into walls and objects and 90% of the time you couldn’t see where to go in small rooms. And then, of course, you have the awesome, helpful community that spawns portals and casts spells everywhere to make the otherwise boring jumping puzzle a little bit more visibly challenging ( I mean, what fun is jumping if you see where you need to jump, right?) and who are constantly speedbuffing you so you can get back to the jump you missed (because of the speedbuff) faster.
My take on this is that if you’re into dubstep, you just have to enjoy this puzzle. It’s like dubstep…for the eyes.
If you love jumping Puzzles , you’ll love this Jumping Puzzle
HOWEVER
If Jumping Puzzles are work for you, you may or may not just glaze this over because the rewards are a Exotic shoulder pad with common skin.
I need the salvage ecto, so I guess I’ll do it.
Don’t do it. The ecto is not salvagable.
This puzzle is ok now because there are people to rezz you. In a couple weeks, it is going to be the most unfun one as it is very very very unforgiving.
Unless we’re going to find out that the final chest contains the same item every day. Then, this puzzle will be the most unfun tomorow.
EDIT: The puzzle also has a tendency for letting you die in places others can’t reach. Had to respawn 5 times now at the very beginning. Not fun. Sorry. It’s okay that it’s challenging, but that’s just absurd.
Well I found 6 of them so far and they’re all in LA. (have been for quite a while, actually.) You couldn’t interact with them so far, now you can. They tell you something about Cobiah’s history. You’ll likely get the skill points if you found all of them.
EDIT: i also just found out there is a wiki page that tells you all of their locations. One of them is in fact in Malchor’s Leap. Here’s the link:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Marriner_Plaque
EDIT2: There’s also an NPCs that tells you about the history hunt at the new Cobiah Marriner statue. See, it all falls into place
(edited by CorneliusCoffin.3169)
I think that right now people are simply not running the dungeon because the risk of running into the bug where Kiel just stops walking is too high. Once that’s been fixed I think there will be more people doing th dungeon.
We just had the same issue.
All 5 of us jumped the puzzle, then we went back to get Kiel and after web beat up the mobs, she wouldn’t move.
You haven’t been in a lot of dungeons lately, have you?
That’s the new dungeon mechanic. It’s been in place for quite a while and it’s intended.
I’m also not quite yet ruling out the possibilty that E isn’t in fact a single person but a group of people.
What, like the rumors on the Shadow Broker?
No. The Shadow Broker is Liara T’Soni. We all know that
The german translation of the story on their mainpage is refering to E as a male. It could be a wrong translation but still…
E is repeatedly referred to as male in English too – the short story says his voice was deep, which would indicate male, and he’s called male by Majory.
Technically, Destiny’s Edge’s story isn’t in the personal story but the dungeon stories. Though the same effect holds more or less. But it’s still a loop hole that could be considered.
It’s not just dungeon.
There's this part about Destiny's Edge being irreconcilable in the personal story. And then of course the dungeon stories take that up.
Don’t buy the rich ones, the increased chance is really not worth it… Keep in mind the amount of people posting they get a ticket in 10-50 coffers vs the amount of people saying they get one in 2000+… The trend is pretty clear 10-50 coffer players are in the minority, with the average being around the 2k mark.
You know why that is? Because people who get them in 10-50 tries don’t get all upset about Jade tickets dropping to frequently and take their anger to the interwebs
To be honest there’s just no reason to post in this thread if you’ve got your ticket in a few tries, so the majority of all posts in this thread will naturally come from people with bad RNG luck.
some one mentioned E being an idea not a person then it could very well be an ever anonymous character or an organization destiny’s "E"dge maybe?
I really hope they go all out with the anonymous character and maybe have him/her appear in game as a masked vigilante
I’ve been thinking about Destiny’s Edge as well, but as has been discussed in another thread, ArenaNet is trying to keep characters from the personal story out of the living world as much as possible, so as to not spoil anything for new players. Putting the Edge in there would basically go full force against that approach.
Basically it’s what has been said above. A lot of players have multiple characters on max. level at this time. Most of them are hanging out in high level zones because the rewards there are much higher.
However, ArenaNet is actively working on bringing back players to those low level zones (the recent Dragon Bash event was a good example for that where you had tasks that could only be completed in low level areas.)
Also keep in mind that the game is huge. If you’re on level 5 and this is your first playthrough, you have no idea how much stuff and how much area still lies ahead of you (look forward to it!). Depending on which server you are on, you should consider moving to a more populated server.
The german translation of the story on their mainpage is refering to E as a male. It could be a wrong translation but still…
E says: „Einer, den Ihr nicht vergessen werdet. Ich werde mich wieder melden. Nennt mich E.“
Anyway E seems to be a real person.
That “einer” doesn’t refer to a person but to “Beginn” in “Was für ein wunderbarer Beginn einer Bekanntschaft.” German uses differently gendered articles (der, die, das) an “der Beginn” in German is masculine, therefore “einer” has to be masculine as well.
This does in no way determine any persons gender.
Daroon: I think you’re confusing coffers with chests. As far as I know the coffers don’t drop wings. I’ve had mine drop from one of those chests that are dropped by regular mobs. You know, those that contain rare or exotic items.
I think this might also be the explanation for the confusion on the wiki page. Bare in mind that those pages are made by players.
-marjory wouldve probably taken note if the hand that grabbed her had been furry and clawed
And for similar reasons, we can rule out Mister E being an Asura (too small to grab a human and hold a blade to her throat), a Norn (Marjory would know at once because their build is so much bigger than a human’s) or a Sylvari (planty appendages). That leaves him as being human.
You guys are too quick ruling out things based on unreliable information. For all we know, Marjory might know E’s identity, meaning, she also knows why E has an interest in her anonymity. So any information we get from Marjory and/or Kasmeer regarding E’s identity should be taken with a grain of salt.
I’m also not quite yet ruling out the possibilty that E isn’t in fact a single person but a group of people.
Maybe it’s time to completely change the face of Orr, then.
But that means we’re going to have to build a huge spoiler tag at the entrance of Orr to warn new players not to pay too close attention to their environment or they might get a general idea of the outcome of their story.
And who’s gonna fund that? Not with my taxes, I say. Leave Orr as it is!
I don’t really think that what you’re envisionening is manageable with the staff that ANet has and the payment-modell they are pursuing, as promising as it sounds.
The releases of the past months kinda got me thinking that they’re already working at capacity to try and bring us new stuff every other week. You already hear a lot of people complaining that the storyline structures aren’t complex enough or there’s not enough content and it’s stretched out too much.
Adding a hypertext-structure (which is basically what you’re suggesting) to all of this would essentially cut their productivity into half (if we’re talking about two seperate branches), which would mean every player would get the same amount of content as today, but every 4 instead of every 2 weeks, or you’d get even less content biweekly.
Living World doesn't provide enough in-game direction
in Living World
Posted by: CorneliusCoffin.3169
I think the main reason is that there are too many ways that are meant to tell you what to do next at the same time and that gets confusing over time. You have dialogue, you have letters, in the letters you have maps with circles and then on your actual map you have a lot of yellow stars. Then of course there’s also the wiki, patch notes and the event homepage.
Personally I feel that if I get directions from a conversation with an NPC, I’d like to follow those directions. If those directions can’t be followed because they’re wrong or not complete or not accurate enough and I need to start clicking through all the characters with yellow stars over them or cosnult other sources it starts to become trial-and-error, which is neither good gameplay nor good storytelling. It’s something I’m doing because it’s what the gameplay demands, but it doesn’t feel natural.
I think that if the dialogue or letters were written a bit clearer, we could get rid of all the other indicators like stars and circles and all that entirely and it would feel a lot more like a living world.
I doubt you’ll need the book. The plaques in honor to Cobiah Mariner are in game already and I’ve found a good portion of them (without explicitly looking) in Lion’s Arch. Not sure if all 12 of them are, but it would make sense, so I think those plagues span over a very small area, which should easily make it possible to locate them all if you haven’t read the book.
EDIT: just went on a very superficial stroll through LA and found 6 of those plaques. So chances are the others are there as well.
(edited by CorneliusCoffin.3169)
I think the sassy nemesis will be Mai Trin. I foresee a lot more 1 person stories coming up. I just hope they can be groupable and scaleable.
If Mai Trin is going to be our nemesis, I hope she’s going back to supervillain school for a few terms first, because what she tried to pull off at Dragon Bash wasn’t exactly the archetype of a perfectly planned crime.
Got mine from a tamini warrior in front of the demon grub pits in Queensdale.
By now, I actually really hope that it’s somebody we have not met yet. My biggest fear is that at some point they’re going to say: “Hey, it’s me <Traherne/Demmi/eir etc.>. I’ve been E all along>”
And we’re all immediately: “Well that doesn’t make sense, because…” because we’ve dug ourselves so deep into this E story.
I really hope they’re keeping track of all the hints they’re giving out on E and don’t come up with some lazy excuse why it’s <insert impossible character here>
EDIT: …which, however, would be so “LOST” to do.
(edited by CorneliusCoffin.3169)
I don’t know. I guess it’s just a case of lazy writing. If you think about it, any of the wounded/dead representatives could have been responsible for the effigies’ explosion as well and they’re not being questioned either. I can kind of understand why the five representatives that have fled the scene are our prime suspects. What I can’t understand is why we investigate them and Mai Trin but nobody else.
Boy, the devs must find this thread quite amusing.
They are probably laughing at our crazy guesses.… or faren and E stand for something ridiculous that he used for his alias; like enigmatic
I don’t think Faren can be so enigmatic, and he certainly isn’t the kind of guy that would hide his identity. He likes to boast about what he did (and about what his best buddy did, too). Faren is a really nice guy and a wonderful friend, but that’s just not his style.
That’s what they said about Clark Kent.
what happened to all the males in Tyria?
I’ll tell you what happened. They got killed.

I think we can pretty safely rule out the possibility that any member of the Order of Whispers (including Demmi Beetlestone) is behind E, after what we have learned in “The Last Straw 2”.
First of all the Order of Whispers is the single-most informed organization in Tyria. Why would they need to hire a private investigator to do their work?
Second, even if there was a reason they needed Marjory, the story clearly states that she became a private investigator after having been contacted by E. That’s just not how the Order of Whispers work. If they feel they need your assistance, they’re going to make sure you become part of the order (as in the personal story) and not a freelancing detective.
